Not good a teaching, but generous at curving test. Do not learn anything in class, only out of class studying.
Only reads off power points very quickly cant take notes.
Okay, this man is a GEM. Yes, he may read off the lecture slides, but what do you want him to do?? It's intro bio lol just read the slides again after class and you'll be fine. He clearly tells us what will be on the tests and is funny and nice!!!
Understands the material he teaches, but doesnt explain it in a way that is easy to understand. Heavy lecture PowerPoints every session, the only way to pass with a decent grade is to study weeks in advance for tests, and should study heavily throughout the entirety of the semester.
He just reads off of the powerpoints. The only nice thing is that he gives you the powerpoints. It is pointless going to class except for the clicker quizzes which he sometimes does at the end so you end up sitting through an entire boring lecture before you can leave to teach yourself the content.
His lectures are mostly reading off of powerpoints but he does stop to explain and answer questions. His tests aren't bad at all and I'm pretty sure he scales them. I can also tell he genuinely cares about his students and wants us to succeed. I would definitely take him again!!
I don't mind him as a teacher, except that I basically have to teach myself. I can't pay attention in his class because he is very monotoned and quiet, and he reads straight off of the slides, so taking notes in-class is nearly impossible. You HAVE to show up to class for the clicker quiz. His tests are fairly simple, so that balances things out.
Super lecture heavy class. He pretty much reads the powerpoints but he always stops and makes sure everyone understands the material and to see if anyone has any questions. You'll have a clicker quiz pretty much every day so attendance is mandatory. He's really nice and helpful if there is something you dont understand and his tests are pretty easy
He's a nice person, but not a good professor. He's very monotone to the point where I can't pay attention because I get so bored. If you are a more kinesthetic learner, I would refrain from taking this class because he just reads off the power points. He's more helpful one-on-one rather than in the lecture. Also, study way ahead of time for tests.
All he does is read off the power points so fast and doesn't give enough time to write it down. You basically have to teach yourself. I studied for each test for weeks and never got above a C-. I read the text, practice questions, key concepts and still can't get a good grade. Long story short this class consumed my life and still barely passed
Hodges is a wicked nice guy. It's an intro survey course, so it's hard to make an interesting lecture out of material that a student just has to memorize plain and simple. Don't blame the guy. He's great. The tests are pretty straight forward, just read and take notes on the book and follow the syllabus. You'll be fine
Your textbook will become your best friend, read the powerpoints BEFORE class because no one can write as fast as he reads
Tests aren't too bad if you use the book, Great teacher and cares about his students, Clicker quizzes are usually every day.
His lectures are boring, but VERY informative. He practically tells you whats gonna be on the test. I think overall he was a good teacher. He wasnt easy, but he was willing to help.
If you are someone who has taken AP Bio before and are looking to not have to do much for an easy A, take Hodges. He basically reads the powerpoint during class and doesn't do much else. There are clicker questions every day and each one is worth credit so don't skip class. Tests aren't bad at all, didn't study for a single one and made A/B's.
Hodges is a super nice person and if you ever need help with anything his office hours are very useful. My only issue with this class was that the lectures were extremely boring yet you have to show up for the clicker question. He curves all the tests and gives extra credit so that is nice. Use the study area, quizlet and read the book.
for being a brand new teacher he did a very good job. if you read the textbook and the powerpoints you will do perfectly fine In the class . be prepared to put in work because it wont be straight forward but the tests are very simple . lots of extra credit at the end
Dr. Hodges is a truly a gem. He is by far one of the nicest and most caring professors that I have had. The class itself is straightforward and the exams are based on his lectures, and it is obvious that he wants everyone to succeed. He is definitely one of the best professors that I have taken, and I would have taken him for 216 in a heartbeat!!
he conveyed the information but class was boring
super easy class. lectures are boring but he usually gave points back on the tests. uses clickers for in class quizzes
For me, Hodges made the information very boring and hard to understand. He was very monotone and didnt seem to have an interest in the information he taught himself, which made me uninterested as well. He read straight off his powerpoint and provided minimal extra explanation on topics. He provides no type of review for test criteria.
Make sure you are going to class because a lot of material he goes over in class is on the test.
He is very monotone and reads straight off the powerpoint.t. I had to completely teach myself the entire class. He wasn't very helpful when I talked to him after class. You must show up for the clicker quizzes because that is how he takes attendance. I studied for every test and I didn't make above a c- on any of his tests.
Hodges is a very caring professor and genuinely cares about the students. It's an anatomy class, so of course the classes will be lecture heavy, but he tries his best to explain everything considering how much information there is. All of the powerpoints are online and there are so many other resources available to help in the class.
I've never been a bio person, but Hodges made it a lot easier to understand. He does his best to make class interesting and points out material to study in lecture. He's very approachable outside of class and the tests are pretty straightforward. The class itself is very material-heavy but he makes it as easy on the students as possible.
Hodges is a gem. He is very willing to get to know his students and he was always available for help. His class is lecture heavy and you have to study a lot to do well on the test, but he helps make it easier.
This man is the one you want for anatomy. He truly cares about his students and wants you to succeed. Very accessible and wants to get to know you!
One of the best professors I have had at UA he gives a lot of extra credit opportunities by clicker quizzes and provides extra credit opportunities for each exam. I usually had a few points added to each exam grade just by doing the clicker quizzes so make sure you attend class solely for that purpose.
Hodges has been the one of the few best professors I actually like at UA. He is very caring about his students and is quick to know your name even if you visit him once. I went to his office hours a couple times and he has explained very thorough info for the test. I have gotten As and high Bs on all of his tests. He gives extra points too!!!
Dr. Hodges is my favorite professor thus far in my college career. He cares about his students and wants to get to know/help them as well as he can. Obviously go to class and study hard, but it's really beneficial if you can go to his office hours and talk with him one-on-one about lectures or tests. Super nice guy and gives extra points!
One of the BEST professors at UA. Explains exactly what you need to do for lecture exams and will try to give hints throughout lectures. He tries to know who you are and very helpful in office hours. Gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. Always got an A or high B on tests.
Only been in his class for a few weeks and I cant stand him. Hard to approach and gives no sympathy whatsoever. Boring lectures in a class that should be somewhat interesting.
Dr. Hodges really cares about his students and wants them to do well. He is very accessible outside of class and willing to help you with material you are struggling with.
Hodges is a cool guy, not a very cool teacher. His lectures confuse me and if you don't show up then you'll miss clicker quizzes - and those add up quick. Gives some extra credit but it is usually boring and not worth the points. Wouldn't ever want to take him again - especially if bio is your major.
I loved this professor. Whoever said that he is hard and a boring teacher is wrong. His lectures are somewhat long, but he puts all his lectures on blackboard and even records himself so you can review those before tests. His tests are very similar to the slide shows. Very fun teacher especially since I have him at 8am. Would take again.
He is the sweetest and funniest man alive, but the tests in this course are very hard!! Be prepared to read the book and memorize a lot before every test! Also there are easy clicker quizzes every class for attendance so it is important to go!
Professor Hodges is the best teacher I have had at UA. He is very friendly and always happy to answer questions in or outside of class. Professor Hodges provides many extra credit opportunities and gives extra credit clicker quizzes as a reward for showing up the week of breaks. Professor Hodges is passionate about biology and helping students.
Be prepared to memorize his notes and lectures. Youve got to work really really hard to do good in his class; if you cant memorize easy or if biology is harder for you. Sometimes he wasnt the best at helping me understand concepts but he really tries to help and is the Kindest human being. He tries to make class fun, but the class is difficult.
He is awesome! Super nice and wants everyone to do well. He takes clicker quizzes every class, but you can miss a few days and still get a 100 in quizzes. I went to a few extra credit events and missed a few days, and I ended with a 116 in quizzes! BIG help.
Hodges is great! Ask any person and they will say that taking any science class at UA is difficult but Hodges made this class great! His lectures are really long and his powerpoints are intense but if you go to class you will understand a lot better than if you don't! Gives a lot of lecture quizzes as well!
Great teacher! Its biology so of course it is going to be challenging. The lectures are powerpoint heavy. He gives sooooo so so many extra credit opportunities. Go to class and you will pass. Skip class and it might not end good. I would recommend.
Great professor! He is straightforward with what students are expected to know and will hint at specific questions that will be asked on the exams. He also gives lots of opportunity for extra credit. I really enjoyed having him and would recommend taking him if you can. Very friendly and wants students t do well.
Hodges has been my favorite professor so far. Hes passionate about the information and extremely helpful with questions in and out of the classroom. His personality makes things so much easier to learn. Attendance not required but its beneficial to go... in class quizzes and emphasized points thatll be on the exam.
I love Tyler Hodges!! The nicest guy ever, and he makes the class as easy as possible. He does clicker quizzes so you have to go to class, but he makes it as enjoyable as possible. I had an A average at the end of the semester and he gave me an A+, love that guy fr.
Dr. Hodges is my favorite professor at UA. He really cares about his students. He does do clicker questions every class though so make sure you attend class or it'll hurt your grade. His tests are not too difficult and he makes it clear what to study. He does weekly mastering assignments and pulls lots of questions from the dynamic modules.
While Dr. Hodges is clearly passionate about biology, the pace of this course makes him go too quickly in lectures. Each test would have about 6 long chapters on it. He gives in class clicker quizzes almost every day that are easy but count for grades. Don't expect to keep up with notes in class.
He's a good professor for this class and is clearly interested in the material. My biggest complaint is that as of today (12/1) I still don't have grades back from the beginning of the course. I still don't have midterm test grades back either. The only grades I have back were done by the TA. It's really frustrating but at least he's nice.
Dr. Hodges was amazing! He does his best to make lectures fun and interactive. He was very helpful during this crazy semester. Gave us a good size bonus for attending class on randomly selected days. Personally one of my favorite profs Ive had
Dr. Hodges is one of the best biology professors at UA! I have taken him for both 114 and 310 and had a great experience in each class. There are quizzes and exams, but the questions come straight from the lecture powerpoints, and it is fairly easy to do well if you put in the time to understand the material on the slide!
Dr. Hodges is so caring and helpful! He wants you to succeed and prepares you for the tests. The grading is based on quizzes after each class and tests. He drops alot of the quizzes so it is easy to get a 100 on the quiz grade. He also gave extra credit for going to class which was helpful! You have to study, but it is very doable to get an A!
Dr. Hodges is the sweetest man you'll ever meet. He truly cares for his students and takes time to make sure the knowledge is being understood and received. The class is not too difficult, and he incorporates interesting research articles about the material being learned.
Hodges is one of the most caring and understanding sciences profs at UA. His exams are based off of his lectures. Many quizzes towards grade and many dropped. Understand the powerpoints and you should do fine. No hw. Taken during the pandemic
Anatomy is definitely a difficult class, so there is a lot of time that you have to put in outside of class to study for exams. However, Professor Hodges is a great guy and truly cares about his students. His lectures are never boring, either. He does clicker quizzes during lecture that are sometimes for a grade and sometimes for extra credit.
You definitely have to study, but he gives extra credit opportunities, makes class interesting, is funny, and nice.
I'm not sure how this class would differ in an in-person setting as it was completely over Zoom, however it really was a struggle when it did not need to be. The information is not necessarily easy to understand, however having over 6 chapters on every test felt very unfair. Dr. Hodges is incredibly caring, but I wouldn't recommend this class.
He was a really good professor, his test were simplistic, and if you watched lecture videos, easily make an A. He always curved tests and gave lots of bonuses at end of the semester. The test covered a lot of material, which made it challenging.
Dr. Hodges is absolutely incredible! I really really enjoy this class and he does go quickly, but if you had any bio in the past you should be fine! He is funny and is easily accessible and will help you! He's a real gem!!
Dr. Hodges is my favorite professor at UA. Tests and material are very reasonable for an upper level bio class. I had some difficult circumstances during this semester and he was very accommodating and just wanted me to succeed. Make an effort to get to know him because he is a great person and will do all he can to help you!
Dr. Hodges is one of my favorite professors I've ever had and would 100% recommend taking any of his classes.
He is suer sweet and really cares about his classes. His lectures can be a little boring but his test aren't hard at all. You just have to study. His test aren't super deep into content either, just know the material. He has attendance quizzes everyday on blackboard but those aren't required during class time, just before midnight.
I would recommend Dr. Hodges to anybody. He's really cheerful- I don't think I ever saw him in a bad mood. His material/lectures were easy to comprehend and easy to access. He provided plenty of resources to use. The tests were tricky and often detail-oriented, but due to all the extra resources provided, this was not much of a problem.
Dr. Hodges posts his lectures and slides on Blackboard, so attendance isn't really mandatory (he gives attendance bonus points sometimes when there's no daily quiz). He gives daily quizzes which are super easy points. His tests may be 6 chapters, but they're super straightforward and he lets you write anything down an index card.
Dr. Hodges is a gem. This man cares so much about all of his students and wants everyone to succeed. He also gives tons of extra credit and would throw out questions on exams that everyone missed. He was always so positive and outgoing. I would love to take him for another biology class. 10/10 guy!
Super nice guy! Lectures can be a little hard to sit through sometimes but it is important you go. There is a quiz every day to measure attendance however, I didn't go to every class and the lectures are posted online. Don't recommend skipping classes though. The exams can be difficult.
Great guy! Loves what he teaches and smiles the whole time. On Fridays he will play music for the first bit of class. Attendance isnt required but he will assign in class quizzes due at the end of class to reward people who go to class but they arent bonus. But he does have bonus quizzes on top of that along with quizzes due at midnight.
This guy is great! I did a summer bio camp and had him as well and he has been nothing but nice. Tests are of moderate difficulty but he always goes back through and drops questions a lot of students missed or that he thought was dumb. You can tell he really enjoys his lectures as well. We usually had 2-3 homework assignments due every Sunday.
Professor Hodges is super nice. All of the tests are straight from his lecture. Sometimes the lectures would start to feel long, but overall, they are pretty good. He has pop quizzes pretty frequently, so you need to attend class. He also gives lots of extra credit and grades on a curve. If you study his lecture slides, you'll do fine.
Dr. Hodges is one of the kindest professors you could take. He smiles non stop and loves what he teaches. Definitely a great option for any class he teaches.
Genuinely the most caring professor at this school. Actually cares about the wellbeing of students, and he makes the class easy to understand. The material is somewhat difficult, but that's expected for BSC114. He's always accessible, and is eager to help anyone that needs it. Daily quizzes, homework, and extra credit to boost grade after tests.
I think Hodges is great, his lectures were straightforward and he gives bonus points out every once in a while, but I also thought his tests were really hard. I would study for hours and feel prepared and still end up with a terrible grade on the test; he would give points back on exams sometimes though. Be prepared to study a lot!
If you can take him for a class, DO IT! HE is an amazing professor and is the first one I have had that seems like he truly enjoys being there. He is so enthusiastic it will make you want to come to class even when attendance isn't mandatory.
I hate biology, but Hodges made it as accessible and easy to approach as it could have been. It's a pure lecture class with multiple-choice tests, so come to class ready to listen and take notes, otherwise, it's not worth showing up. I skipped every Friday class and still made an A+, but he gives bonus points some days so it's worth showing up.
His exams are very textbook heavy. If you study the textbook you will do just fine. Attendance is not mandatory, but sometimes he gives in-class quizzes (one question), so you better attend. He also gives a lot of bonus point opportunities.
This is by far the best BSC 114 professor. He scaled every test, which was about 5-10 more points than the original grade. The tests were easy if you read the textbook and his lecture slides. He records and posts every lecture, so attendance is not mandatory. BEST PROFESSOR EVER!
Dr. Hodges is very kind and caring. He is accessible outside of class and offered extra credit opportunities throughout the semester.
I love his class. He gives lots of extra credit and his tests aren't too hard. He is always smiling. He is passionate about what he does. I would 100% take again
I WILL BE MAD IF YOU DON'T CHOOSE HIM! I mean he gives you bonus points and curves the test. As far as the course content use the textbook, PowerPoints, dynamic study modules, and tutoring sessions (BONUS POINTS) to get A's on the test. Do this over 3-4 weeks. In-class open note quizzes and welcoming outside of class. Lectures are informative!
TAKE DR HODGES! Best option for any bio class at UA. 4 tests (including the non-cumulative final) that are each worth 15% of your grade, 20% HW (all on masteringbiology), 20% quizzes. Attendance isn't mandatory but he does give a one question quiz each day, and some will only be available during class time with a password to take them. Tons of EC!!
Professor Hodges is an amazing professor. He clearly has a lot of experience in biology, and that makes his lectures so much better. He's a really nice guy who is willing to help you. Highly recommend.
I had an amazing experience with Dr. Hodges. BSC 114, had a lot of content, but he did his best to help his students succeed. There were in-class quizzes that could boost your grade, so it's important to attend every class. His lectures were great. His office hours were very helpful, and the tests were not too difficult.
Dr. Hodges was fantastic. He did everything he could to help his students succeed in this content-heavy course. Attendance is not mandatory, but I suggest going because in-class quizzes will help your grade if you don't do well on a test. Tests were of moderate difficulty, so study because it's not a cram course.
One of the best professors I have had. Microbial ecology is a difficult class because it is a lot of information , but he is very helpful during office hours and will take his time to make sure you understand the concepts. You can tell he cares about his students and wants the best for them. The class was interesting! In class experiments too!
Dr. Hodges is great. I wish he taught other Bio courses because I would take him. He makes sure you understand all of the material thoroughly. His tests are also VERY easy compared to other BSC 114 teachers. He has a great personality and cares about his students.
His lectures can sometimes be confusing, but his tests are very, VERY easy compared to all of the other BSC 114 professors. Definitely take him if you want to get a good grade in the class.
I love Dr. Hodges don't get me wrong, he truly wants the best for his students and is willing to do whatever to make sure you understand the concepts. Lectures can be pretty hard to sit through but he records them. Attendance isn't mandatory but he gives daily quizzes that definitely help boost your grade.
I LOVE this man. So passionate and understanding; He does do attendance quizzes that sometimes have a passcode. His tests are not super difficult and he is willing to talk to you about what you missed on it! The homework can sometimes by lengthy but its not too bad. Final is not cumulative!
dr. hodges is AMAZING. his class is super lecture heavy, and he'll go on random tangents BUT he's always in a good mood and wants you to succeed. homework SUCKS but loved his class other than that. there are a good amount of in-class quizzes you can only get if you're in class obviously but he posts all his slides and recordings.
Awesome professor. Super friendly and lectures are easy to follow, but they do drag on sometimes. Test a very straightforward, just study the very helpful review material he gives us.
Great professor, lots of extra credit that can boost your grade by up to ~4% if you do all of it. He curves at the end of the class. Tests are very manageable and he provides a comprehensive study guide. Engaging lectures and does his best to make the material interesting no matter your background. Incredibly accessible via email and office hours.
Dr. Hodges is a nice guy but tends to ramble during lectures. He's super helpful in office hours though. While attendance isn't required, he does give random assignments that you have to be in class to do. Tests cover too much material and there should honestly be 4-5 exams instead of 3, so start studying a week in advance.
He is a really great professor. He gives extra credit and records and posts all his lectures. The tests are pretty easy even though they cover a lot of material, but the final is not cumulative and he gives daily quizzes that can boost your grade. I'd take him again in another bio class.
quizzes each class but easy; extra credit from SI tutoring which is an utter waste of time but can get +2.5% if u do 20 hours; lectures are good but he rambles; homework is pretty bad/difficult though. tests are so common sense /easy i spent cumulatively maybe 4 hours in total studying for this course, 1 hour before each exam, and got an A.
Best teacher ever, truly loves what he is teaching about, super understanding. The basic part of just showing up to class will carry along way in his class. Super approachable.
He is so awesome (had him for 114+310)! My opinion hasn't changed about him (his lectures are awesome/informative/funny and he cares for his students as always)! But 310 is harder than 114 (as expected) so read the textbook and keep up with the material as much as possible. The workload is also much lighter in microbio (no hw just exams & quizzes).
He's fine, standard bio stuff. Tests are just random junk off his ppts like every other bio professor. He's clearly a nice guy, but his lectures were a little hard to follow and honestly I learned more just scrolling through ppts. Content was just a lot of memorization, but that's a complaint about BSC 310, not Hodges.
I love Dr. Hodges! He is a great guy and I thought his tests were fair. However, if you are a poor test taker, I did want to note that for my BSC 310 he had tests worth 80% of our grade and quizzes are 20%. There are four tests including the final which is not cumulative, and the quizzes are on blackboard, with a handful of them being in class.
I absolutely loved Dr. Hodges. He records all lectures and posts all slides. He doesn't take attendance(although he makes class very fun to attend). Most content was very understandable and the (almost) daily quizzes helped by letting you see how you might be tested on some of it. Highly recommend!!!
Dr Hodges was really good for microbio, I got a B while missing a lot of in-class quizzes and cramming before exams instead of consistently studying. If you put in more work than I did it's a very attainable A. He can go off on tangents during lectures but is super smart and friendly, plus he posts videos of every lecture
Exams are challenging so start studying a week in advance. Dr. Hodges adds a curve at the end of the class and gives a few extra credit points throughout the semester so overall it is a challenging but doable class! His lectures move fast and exams cover a lot of material in depth, so just stay on top of studying and you'll do fine!
Easy class especially for an upper-level bio. No HW. In-class quizzes that are pretty easy but no clicker. Exams are taken on your laptop using LockDown Browser. Test 1 is super easy then you have to study some for the rest. He gives back points after each exam. Would recommend!
So helpful and very lenient on scores
