Class time is spent mainly lecturing and a couple times a week we break into groups and discuss whatever topic(s) that he has been covering in the lectures. The lectures are mainly based off the readings. I learn best in a discussion based classroom, and for this reason I did not love this class.
Extremely lecture heavy! I had a hard time paying attention to the class because the material was confusing and didn't relate to real-life. Also, we had very few assignments which meant that our midterms grades hugely impacted our final grade. I had the class three times a week, two hours each, which made it super boring when it was only lectures!
took him for econ 201 and he just had very hard midterms and tests. he even himself knew the class tests were hard and would admit to it but never did anything to fix it.
His classes are very lecture heavy, even though we have breaks its hard to focus. As much as all my classmates didnt use the textbook and pretty much everything was based off of his lectures, hed always have to constantly curve the exam. Especially as an introductory class, he could do better.
Dude Im bored to tears in this class. Ty uses In an unnecessary amount of words to describe concepts and when youre in the middle taking notes he stops in the middle of the sentences and explains it in a different way and its very frustrating for notes. Tests are very hard and I should be able to obtain a better grade for the amount I study.
I think that Tyler deserves better marks. I do agree, his tests are SO HARD and frustrating, but his lectures are well thought out and you can tell he is trying really hard. He is always available for questions and does a solid job overall
Mr. Saxon clearly has very little passion or experience in teaching. He does not know how to carry a 50-minute lecture without making everyone falling asleep. Very touch grader.
I have never fallen asleep in a class before this class. He is very lecture heavy but as he's explaining something he'll start to mumble and explain the concept in a different way making it harder than it already was to understand and hear... Though he says he's not trying to influence he is super bias and doesn't care AT ALL about student success
He teaches in a way that gets you to think for yourself, and he is clearly passionate about challenging popular ideas in economics. Pay attention and take notes and the quizzes are a breeze, I'm not sure what everyone here is talking about. Only negative is that lectures can be boring, but I wouldn't know how to make inflation interesting either.
it's super important to participate and engage with the ideas for this teacher. the subject and content for the course of economics is hard in general. ty's way of teaching is clear and understandable if you pay attention. he won't hold your hand but if you don't understand something and ask him for help he's super open to elaborating on anything
took his course for micro economics last quarter and macro for this quarter. he just started at BC last quarter so you can't blame him for a rocky start U can tell he's trying rlyhard to improve and has taken steps to ensure that grades and coursework is more considerate to the students. slightly strict on grading but grades reflect the work put in
grading mostly reflects midterm, final, in class exercises and quizzes. as long as you pay attention, participate and take notes it's p much a breeze. certain chapters like inflation and monetary policy can be hard but he tried his best to make them engaging. work hard and take advantage of office hours. some quiz answers can be found on class ppts
This guy has a reasonably good class. He's an okay teacher but his tests are ridiculously complex. No matter how hard you study, his tests will have questions that will hit on the most tiny bits of information buried deep in his lectures and expect you to remember literally every single thing. Good luck ever passing one of his finals.
Ty was an exceptional teacher- he made sure all questions were answered no matter what- class discussions were helpful as they allowed for further discussion and also some points towards the overall grade. There was no take homework given out- this would have been nice to allow for some more points
This guy obviously knows and like this subject a lot. But that's kinda of the problem, all he does is talk. It's almost impossible to take notes in his class because his lectures are barely formatted they're just mumbles in conversations. He knew that exams were too difficult but refused to change. Would not recommend ever.
I took Ty's micro course online. I think the class was not hard if you put some effort into it. Reading textbook (free online version) is optional but you will understand the context better if you do. The textbook is easy to scan through anyway. There're 1 quiz and 1 discussion post per week but they're easy and didn't take me much time to do.
I really enjoyed this class. Ty did a great job of explaining many complicated topics. He was good about answering questions, even if it meant staying online after class. He is also an instructor who won't make you feel stupid if you ask a silly question. I thought his tests could be somewhat tricky but manageable if you study. Great instructor!
I took 201 with Ty and the course was really straightforward with its objectives. He is a clear instructor and the lectures are important in order to understand all concepts, unless you want to read the free online textbook. 10/10 would take again
This was the worst class I have ever been in. The professor did not meet the course objectives specified on the college's website. Most of his lectures were him rambling on about his far left political views and discussing the social justice topic of the week. If you want to learn real economics do not take this course!
Ty Saxon is one of the best professors at Bellevue College. He is knowledgeable, articulate, and passionate. He truly cares about his students and the subject of Economics. All the other people are salty.
Overall the class was easy. Show up to the zoom discussions and read the online textbook. You will get an A if you do. The quizzes are 8 question multiple choice and mostly straight from the textbook. The "essay" is normally on zoom discussions and it normally has to be less than a page.
Ty is passionate about economics, and encourages thoughtful discussion. Fun class, if you attend the lectures you will do pretty well.
Took micro and macro with Ty and I must say his courses are every bit worth it. He was available during office hours and will field any question with precision. The multiple-choice exams were sometimes a bit obscure, but overall I'm happy with my grade and the work put in. Ty is a phenomenal person and although expectations are strict, he's a lad.
Tyler Saxon is an incredible instructor whose class doesn't have unnecessary expenses for textbooks you will never use. The textbook is free and you only need to use it if you want extra study practice. Mr Saxon's class is a pretty easy A as long as you put in some effort and take notes in class. Also, lectures will slow down to explain concets.
I ended up taking Tyler Saxon for micro and macroeconomics and loved both classes. Mr Saxon took the time to make sure people were actually understanding the lectures and material. The only thing that can stop you from getting a good grade is not studying a little bit for tests.
Ty was a really good professor. He had clear grading criteria and expectations. Honestly just watch the lecture videos and take notes and you'll do well. You can tell he cares about what he's teaching and he's pretty straight-forward, which I appreciate. I highly recommend and I'll be taking him for macro as well.
Ty is an awesome professor. The class mostly revolves around discussion and ideas. The concepts are not hard to learn, and he is available if you have questions. The tests are easy. This class opened my mind to ideas I had not considered before. I would highly recommend taking a class with Ty, his class was one of my favorites at Bellevue College.
Ty seems nice, but this class was brutal. Lengthy weekly discussions and quizzes or tests with an essay. Tough grader. Basically an English class too. There's also a "civic engagement project" which takes so much effort and is a waste of time. No other Econ202 professor does this. Save yourself the time and choose someone else.
Professor Saxon is a great professor who really knows ECON well. Really watch the recorded lectures and take good notes in order to get good grades. If you slack a little bit, you'll end up with a lower grade like me (I had an A for majority of the class).
Ty was a refreshing professor to have. For an economics class we talked about more fields such as history, political science, sociology and psychology. Textbook readings were mandatory with weekly tests (6 questions max), and we had to watch 5 movies throughout the quarter. He grades hard on writing assignments but nothing else. Definitely take him
Free textbook, easy HW, quizzes, and tests. Lots of lectures, I enjoyed them but bit long, and a debate or discussion every class. Very educated on topic, but less technical macroeconomic policy, more "big idea". Not typical econ class, very informative, but ty is very opinionated in terms of policies/practices, little too much on one side at times
This class will be easy as long as you watch the movies and show up to class. There's a quiz every week and 3 total writing assignments that count for most the grade (but are easy cause they are opinion based). He does debates and group discussions, but they are super casual and not scary to participate in. If you win a debate you get extra credit!
What a waste of a quarter.
If you know nothing about economics and want to educate yourself: take this class. If you are taking this class for credit: still take it. I'd only not recommend taking it if you don't like lectures because the two-hour class is all lectures besides debates. Overall chill teacher. Would recommend.
His grading was not clear, he will ask for something and then say that you lacked that. Does not give a rubric to fall back on and did not give feedback on what I was doing wrong.
Professor Saxon is a great teacher and very progressive thinking. He values his students opinions and will make extra time for you after class to address anything covered in class. You can miss up to 2 days before attendance is affected. This class looks at economics from the average person's point of view. There are discussions and debates weekly.
The worst grader and feedback giver. Gave me bad grades for "over detailing" and "insufficient details" on discussions and classmate responses.
Liked his class. If you want a good grade though you have to really show up for every single class. If you miss more than two classes your grade is tanked. In terms of assignments they are all 90% opnion based. Its all easy EXCEPT the midterm exams (3). Theres 10 questions (8 pts each) and one written portion. No curve. Dont miss a single question.
Ty really emphasizes critical thought and discussion rather than just memorization, which made the material much more interesting and easier to learn for me. 2 weekly in-class lectures as well as 1-2 weekly video lectures on Canvas. The 3 exams make up most of the points and each include a multiple-choice and writing section.
do not take his class!!! he is extremely tough in grading and i honestly feel like he wants all his students to fail his class. This is my 5th quarter here and this is the only course that I may not get an A. You only get to lose 80 points in a quarter and its funny how u can only miss 8 questions in 3 freaking exams. Super tough grader! DONT TAKE!
Great professor, but a harsh grader, the tests are everything, and there no quizzes to help boost your grade.
I liked this class, more lenient with grading and had decent extra-credit opportunities. I also liked the content and how it was presented.
Ty is a great professor! I learned so much from this class, and the materials being covered are really interesting. The workload for this class is very fair. If you go to every class, take good notes, and put in the effort to study, you should have no problem getting a good grade. Tests are all open notes.
He is super great with lectures and keeping people engaged but he is a tough grader on tests
At least online: Insanely tough grader, but gives no helpful feedback on why you received said grade. He will dock points for going above a word count but then also dock points if your response "isn't detailed enough" because it's short. As in, that's literally the only feedback he will give after taking off like 10 points from your 50 point exam.
I totally didn't understood his grading behavior. It seemed like he purposely takes out points on irrelevant subjects. Although his lectures are great, helped me understand lessons, but not for quizzes.
He is a good professor and pretty chill, he doesn't allow phones or computers in his class so if you are a online note taker I would just buy a notebook and/or print your notes
Tylor is an amazing teacher, he helped the class learn and actually put in practice their skills. The content is interesting and the class is overall comfortable. Would recommend for fair, fun and flexible credits!
He's an amazing teacher, he thought us many useful things in class that we can use in the real world! His lectures are fun and overall entertaining :D
Ty Saxon is the best professor I have come across at Bellevue College, and one of the best teachers I have ever had in my entire education. Ty creates great discussions, in class activities, and he cares deeply about the subject. I have found that through this method of teaching, I have learned much more than I would have from reading a textbook.
Fantastic teacher for any student interested in economics. Great combination of lectures, readings, and videos to help you easily earn a good grade. If you are interested in the social aspect of economics, his lectures will be great. If you are interested in the technical aspect of economics, spend more time on the textbook and videos.
Professor was a tough grader, he spent a lot of time and energy talking about politics rather than economics. I was hoping real estate and actual economics about the stock market to be covered in this class. But it wasn't, he made a lot of announcements after class about Gaza. Staying after class, because he talked more about politics was the wors
Ty was such a good teacher. I had him for both macroeconomics and microeconomics, truly he made both of his classes fun! The activities he does in his classes are fun and interactive. He's a very caring and fun teacher when you get to know him! Highly recommend taking his classes!
Ty is a great teacher who encourages discussions in the class. We talked a lot about the social aspect of economics and the practical approach of what we learned. I definitely recommend this class.
Ty is probably the best professor I've ever had and his classes are always enjoyable. He is a great and inspiring teacher, and he makes sure the class environment is super interactive and friendly. It's a super interesting course for people both interested and not interested in economics, and I couldn't recommend him enough.
Ty is awesome! Highly recommend taking his class; I will say, he covers a lot of material and his quizzies can be difficult, but as long as you just do the readings/work, you'll be good. If you're confused about anything, use his office hours! He explains things super well but it's up to you to actually make the effort and go talk to him.
This is the best economics teacher at BC!!! I could tell that Mr. Saxon truly cared about his subject and students. He made active efforts to engage the class, and taught the material in a way that was easy to understand. I would take him again for macroeconomics if he offered it!
Ty is great. his lectures are so interesting. his tests are a little tough but as long as you listen and take notes in class, you'll do good. there isnt any homework but he has online lectures on top of his in person class. the exams are completely open note so combine your notes with chatgpt notes and it will be so light. 9/10 prof
Ty was the best Econ professor I have had at this school. I honestly have no idea why some of these reviews are so low; I took Macro from Liliana Lawrence and I can say with 100% certainty that this class was not only easier, but more informative. Anyone taking Econ should seek out Ty for their classes!
His lectures are fun. Class activities every other week and they're actually engaging and useful. TAKE NOTES!!! They will help so much on the open-note exams. There isn't homework and the workload is perfect. Don't hesitate to take this class. Make sure you stay off your phone and he'll love you. It's easy to do well and learn a lot.
its alright - no homework just a small quiz and a reflection on in class assignments. the exams don't really match the class content and are worth like 50% of your grade but they're open note and book so bring like 30 pages of notes. the class is fun but the exams made it pretty stressful
Very strict with deadlines. No late work accepted except for 50% of grade. Mostly all of the lectures and group work is about material that isn't even remotely relevant to exam heavy grade criteria... Nice guy, but achieving an A seems unreasonably difficult. The tough grading makes him seem like less of a nice guy actually. Recommend avoiding.
Idk why everyone is hating - hes a chill guy and he wants you to understand how the economy influences you and how you can influence it instead of just making you memorize graphs and numbers like other professors. he also has really fun activities like (paper airplane building and etc) that relate to the topics in class. It's a hard class but fun.
A solid professer when it comes to challenging students on critical thinking and generally cares for you to understand how influential the economy runs. He is also amazing when it comes to critiques and feedbacks. He also notices the potential in students in which I give all my respects, considering it can be hard in showing that as a teacher.
He supports hamas in Gaza
his lectures are fun, esp if there is an activity. hes not even that bad, hes super chill and hates the technical side of econ. hes funny and lowkey laid back. exams are open note so TAKE NOTES!!! it will help you a lot. he grades papers and essays pretty hard so send it to him early so he can check it over. otherwise this class was really fun
Spends so much time speaking on politics. He claims to not take a political side but it's very obvious what he is. Lectures have almost nothing to do with the course material or what's on his exams. Avoid this "professor"
Took this class online and weekly readings have very few relevancy to the weekly quizzes. For the writing assignments, he gives useless feedback that wants you to explain every single detail when it is unnecessary and unachievable when trying to stay in the word count. Final in person is open note and readings are long.
WOKE and very rude
Very political and pushes his own views onto you. Grading is very biased and class is based on what he believes. He implements his beliefs so much into his teaching. Debates for extra credit is graded based on what he likes not who has the best argument. Avoid him.
If antifa is a terrorist organization and you are a member of antifa, does that make you a terrorist?
Skip his class unless you want to be fed his political agenda spun to look like econ. Really bizarre use of curriculum to try and demonize certain countries, etc.
Cared more about political agenda then economics...
Very evil man
Is extremely critical of the us service men and women who fought for his right to be so critical.
You guys did not miss with Ty. He's by far my favorite teacher at BC. He gets the whole class participating and sometimes it feels like it's not even class but somehow, we all end up still learning. Strict no electronics rule which is probably how he actually gets all of us engaged. Will be taking him for macro next quarter!
He is very negative and dismissive about the traditional American patriot and what they sacrificed to earn the first truly democratic nation. Instead he teaches how are country should have open boarders, and Dearborn Michigan is a an example of what the rest of the USA should look like and become.
There is a reason Tyler Saxon is the lowest rated teacher at Bellevue College
Not a great professor whatsoever. Very strict, no late work whatsoever, no electronics, loads of homework weekly. Bad grading as well, he gives no constructive feedback and it's almost as if students are expected to read his mind on what he wants out of assignments. Very inaccessible out of class, rarely ever responds to emails, if ever.
Professor also spins his political beliefs into the curriculum. I'm not saying this in any way against his beliefs, but the class had a lot of political teachings instead of economics. Grading and assignments are based on how well your answer aligns with his personal beliefs. Wouldn't recommend taking.
If he's last professor available, it's not the end of the world. No homework other than the weekly quiz and reflection based on class activity which is short and easy as long as you go to class. He teaches his political views and grading is based on that, however I found it better sometimes because I am not good at the math/technical area of econ.
He spends to much time talking about how our country should let in every illegal immigrant and the American citizens tax dollars should pay for all of their expenses. I wish I would have been taught economics.
He Thinks ilhan Omar is a hero
2 midterms + final exam are 50% of grade. 2 writing assignments are 17% of grade. Tough to get full points on essays. Multiple choice on exams isn't too bad. Quizzes (2 attempts) and discussion post & reply every week. Lots of readings and lectures each week. Workload is a little much, but not a bad class overall. Extra credit for course evaluation
Tyler told the class that it doesn't matter what the students say or think about him. He was going to keep his job and receive a paycheck regardless. I think it's time test whether this hypothesis is true.
woke demon
The only positive reviews for him are written by a large girl, non student that he met at a bar he frequents.
I mean the class WAS easy. But if youre thinking it's a microeconomics class, one related to math, analytics, and graphs, you'd be mistaken. More like his own political agenda shoved into an economics course (he claims he is openminded). Middle east country is mentioned in every class, even during breaks + talking to students outside of class time.
He teaches students that the US should be required to support undocumented immigrants with their harder tax dollars
