I took Business and Politics class that he taught, I genuinely adore this class even though I almost hate politics... But be ready to read a lot! He gives you all of the readings, you just need to print it. He uses very up-to-date cases and situations in business and politics world. He is really smart and educated. And visit lectures, helps A LOT!
Excellent professor ever! Will not forget this teacher when I leave Humber. Interesting lectures, fair tests and some funny multiple choice question possibilities. I would definitely have him again in the future!! Well done and thank you, Tyler!!
Professor lectures using detailed self-made power points. Lectures are very informative and engaging. He is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about this content. He is very respectful of students, allows extensions without reasons, if you come to class and take notes you will get a high mark, he teaches everything, TB is supplementary.
Although he tries to connect with students on a neutral platform by using profanity; he is a wolf in sheep's clothing. He is a disgrace to the teaching profession. His insidious teaching tactics are to sway the class into believing authoritarianism is okay as long as it is the left that does it in their own way.
One of the most incredible teachers I have ever had. Opens your eyes up to the world and allows you to form your own opinion based on information that you have received about current events. I completely disagree with the statement that he is a disgrace to the teaching profession; he is everything the teaching profession needs more of.
Amazingly thorough.
Guys is amazing, cheers
Hands down the best prof I've ever had. I have been a student at many post-secondary institutions and this guys is the best. Take his course
Great guy. Favourite university prof.
A great prof! Inspirational and he always tries to make you think critically. Believe me, you don't need to have his same political view to understand that he is a great teacher who tries to explain the truth behind what we believe we know. Not at all a tough grader. Really interesting lectures and would definitely take other courses with him!
Amazing prof, takes the time to engage with the class and has a hilarious way of bringing points across!!
Tyler is a great prof who is very interested in what he teaches. He is funny and nice. Just come to class and youll do fine on the exam. Power points are very easy to understand. Class discussions are fun. Overall I really enjoyed this class and learned a lot from it.
Tyler was able to create a learning environment where opinions could be voiced comfortably, discussions and disagreements were respectful. 10/10 i would take classes with him again.
Overall great teacher, very enjoyable class
Let me just start off by saying this guys a legend. Walks into class everyday with his suit and breifcase, and delivers a funny, and enjoyable kick ass lecture on some very non enjoyable and non kick ass topics. He does a great job of making even the most boring things, interesting, although most of the content is actually pretty cool! Great guy
He is freaking amazing! If you are thinking about taking his classes, DO! He makes the lectures so much fun that I was motivated to travel early in the morning to get to his classes. If you attend classes you'll pass the exams easy. Great discussions in class and very manageable assignments for even the busiest schedules.
SUCH AN AMAZING PROF! The best best best 100x professor in my entire 3 years at Humber. Will definitely be seating in his class again very soon
Tyler is the best Prof. I've had in my college career. He's fully, smart, intelligent, understanding, caring and accommodating. He has a deep understanding of the material he teaches and it really shows through his insightful and encapsulating lectures. Consider yourself blessed if you get a professor even half as good as him.
His lectures are largely focused on the negative, discusses very few positive things that Western Civilization brought to the world. His leftist viewpoint is distracting and makes it difficult to learn the unobjective facts and events. Uses lots of profanity to be funny. Would advise to pick a different course.
Tyler Shipley is the best history teacher I've ever had. His broad knowledge can really capture everyone's attention. I had the chance to have him in two different courses, and I am glad I did. As for the lessons, I have not met a teacher so charismatic when it comes to teaching history. He shows you the social struggles that are often overseen.
He is a professor that really cares about what he teaches. I was still under a strong impression after semester finished from what he taught. He opens your eyes onto reality not only what you see on the media. He cares for you to grasp his subject. If you dont attend class you wont pass. Trust you wont want to skip it though its that good!
Tyler is an amazing teacher. If you listen carefully you can learn so much. Do I agree with every word out of his mouth, no. But he wouldnt want that anyway, he teaches you to think critically, and he shows you where your own ideas come from. Maybe some people dont like that challenge but I loved it. Thanks Tyler!
This is a great class and the prof teaches a lot of different things. You learn about the entire world and people you don't usually hear about, like when you learn about the vietnam war from the perspective of the vietnam people. Great class! Makes me want to learn more about history which I used to think was quite boring.
not sure what all the rave is about this guy, pretty average class with many readings and long lectures. Material covered is broad and shallow, and he goes on a lot of rants. You will learn some stuff but you have to study a lot and think for yourself cuz theres lots of bias on the subject. This course is meh, 2.5 stars outta 5 at best.
You never know what's going on. He goes very fast. Doesn't fully explain concepts. You're expected to remember over 1000 lecture slides. Tests are basically essays. Comes late to class. Swears a lot in front of students. Wouldn't take this course again.
Great professor who puts a lot of thought and effort into his lectures. Does a great job at synthesizing the material and teaches with a lot of enthusiasm so its very easy to stay engaged. All assignments and tests are extremely fair. If youve attended class, youll do well. Hes very approachable and willing to help if you need any accommodation
this man hates all the great things about Canada: free trade, don cherry, and jordan peterson!
This class will challenge your assumptions of the world. Prof. Shipley offers food for thought regarding the motivations and actions of political leaders and movements leading up to the world of today. Thought provoking, controversial, hilarious, this course is artfully presented and is not difficult. Readings? Don worry bout it, just go to class
I feel really lucky that I got the chance to take Prof Shipley's class. His style is unique and his lessons are engaging and weirdly funny. You learn a lot but the tests are fair, and I feel like I am so much smarter now because he really explains the way the world works. He listens to other perspectives and answers questions patiently. 10/10
Great teacher, Great content of teaching. Gives an honest opinion regarding course material. Gives you a different perspective on the course
Tyler was by far my best professor this semester. He is a great storyteller and can get everybody's attention while delivering a funny and interesting lecture. You will learn about capitalism and economics from another perspective. You can tell he is concerned about your learning and you finish the semester feeling like really learned something.
I personally never liked history but the profs lecture were so good that by the end I actually started liking history. Gives clear instructions whats required just need to do your part. In exams there will be bonus questions. Awesome prof, you never get bored in his class. I would certainly recommend him. You will leave with a different mind set.
Tyler is truly one of the most unique professors I have ever had in my time in post secondary. He is truly a funny guy that works hard to make his lessons engaging for his students. Some of the things we covered in his class were quite bleak and depressing and he made the best effort to make it interesting. He works hard to remove bias from class.
His course (econ204) made me feel a little uncomfortable at times because of the borderline political nature of the course, but it's very interesting. This course should be taken to expand one's perspective. I thought it was easy. I wonder if he gave easy marks because it's college or he wants us to have fond memories of the class and its contents.
Excellent
Satisfactory
Interesting and fun course had a great time and the lectures were unique and not boring. Course is made easy as he explains very well and in a fun way.
Took so many historical issues and made them make sense. Every lecture was like a story and I was kept interested the whole time. I see the world so differently now, because of the enthusiasm and passion of the professor.
He was one of the most inspirational professors Ive ever had. He is fair and honest marker, teaches the material in an interesting and engaging way. Promotes discussion in class and thinking about the material and coming to your own conclusions. Never made the class feel like anything but a safe environment to learn and discuss.
He is an amazing professor.
Tyler is one of the best teachers I had at Humber and this was just for an elective. He gives passionate lectures about subjects that truly matter to him and it really helps you to connect with the subject matter. As long as you listen properly during class and participate a bit when he asks questions it's easy to get a good grade in his class.
One of the best professors I have ever came across!
Tyler is a great professor and person that you can learn a lot from. His lectures are passionate and in depth. You build a lot of knowledge about the world and apply a lot of his concepts in and outside of life. His criteria is clear, he is understanding and very helpful. Would love to have him again as a prof in a heart beat!
I stopped showing up to this class cuz Im tired of hearing one-sided, opinionated prate. What happened to college courses that are interactive? His passion for this subject is rather concerning
Absolutely great professor. Very passionate about his work. Very articulate and easy to follow. He's fair and balanced in his arguments and allows the class to debate topics objectively. He is very professional and cares about his job. He's always connected to the class and isn't lazy like so many other profs. 10/10 would recommend this professor.
I took his class in Winter 2020 batch. His lectures are so informative and He always have facts to back them up. He makes you think deep about a topic. Some people say he has one side Opinion. NOT true at all. He just shows you a different side of the coin which is important. He is always open to any type of questions and gives amazing answers.
Awesome teacher. Makes his history course fun and really entertaining, as well as informative. Very caring and willing to help you out. Teaches critical thinking skills that will help you outside of class. Swears a lot - but he's funny (now he probably knows who this is). If you're at all into history, go for Making of the Modern World.
Very knowledgeable, passionate and knows the material he is teaching very well
To be honest, I enjoyed the classes with this professor so much, his lectures give you so much useful information which makes your world vision much wider. If you want to pass, please follow the professor's instructions, do not be shy and always ask questions if you do not get something, he would be glad to help.
I was honestly a bit disappointed with this course for some reason. He didn't offer any "official" lecture at all. Also, there are so many reading materials for quiz and the only assignment which was 30%. If it was not online, it would've been better for sure. This course will be helpful for critical thinking skills, but... that's all.
Best Professor would recommend anyone to take his course.
This "economics" class is little more than political indoctrination. Everything is taught from one side only. Tons of reading but you'll learn very little. Exams and papers are little more than regurgitation. On the upside, I didn't have to buy a textbook.
I've had prof shipley for three different classes and I've learned so much from him. There are always a few people who don't like that he teaches a different perspective, but he's always really nice about it even when people challnege him. He knows his material so well and he knows so much history that if you just listen you can learn so much.
Even with online class, this prof is very funny and give great video lessons. Interesting ideas that make you think about economy in completely different way. Recommended!
Best Professor I ever heard. He opened my eyes about society. I learned so much from him in one class than I ever did in my whole life
Honestly, at first I thought he was going to make some of the more esoteric topics interesting and help me understand new perspectives on things. But as the class went on, it was more about him, and his own viewpoints. It got very tiring to hear how everything is wrong with everything. Yawn. Skip this guys class!
1000000000000% recommended. Best prof ever, he will teach you real life things that really matter and will change your views.
Wonderful prof, honestly a fantastic course. Relatable and approachable, would take again!
Such a great teacher and course!
Tyler helped me understand Canadas colonial past and present to build a better future in ways I hadnt considered before. His lectures were thorough and detailed. He responded well to questions during and after class. I cant say enough good things about my experience in POLS 2000. I look forward to taking more of Tylers courses in the future.
Great prof and class, learned so much, opened my eyes and went beyond and deeper into all issues and topics covered, not afraid to challenge status-quo versions of history that socially go unquestioned. His dedication, passion for the content, and his generosity with making himself available to engage student questions went beyond that of most.
One of the best
Tyler is very knowledgable and his explanations of historical events are thorough and accessible. If extra help is needed, Tyler is open to breaking down concepts even further outside of classroom time. This was an excellent primer to Canadas colonial foundations and will make you rethink what Canada is today.
Professor Shipley raised my level of critical thinking and analysis of political economy. He doesn't force you to see things in a particular way; he instead challenges you to articulate how worldviews are shaped. Debating him made me flex serious brain muscle. He can recommend reading on many areas of politics for independent study which is great.
Professor Shipley is exceptional in two respects. He has a vast knowledge of his content which allow for clear and concise delivery. Secondly, hes just a cool and approachable guy. Combined, these traits make him a fantastic professor.
Tyler will take you on a journey across 150 years of Canada's history. He critically analyzes (and backs by evidence) on why practices, policies, events happened, examines who stood to benefit and, beautifully articulates its impacts even until today. He will inspire you to critically examine the world you and the legacy of the past.
Tyler is an awesome prof with a super deep understanding of the subject matter/history, learned a ton and really enjoyed his class.
Amazing professor. Provides real, academic information and allows for critical thinking. Learned so much during the lectures which were highly engaging and thoughtful.
- passionate professor who introduces new unique perspectives - great at approaching difficult topics respectfully wo/ sanitizing anything - provides lots of sources for extended reading. A great idea for furthering your understanding! easy to understand even without expansion material tho
Tyler was a great instructor while working through his book Canada in the World. He helped explain concepts thoroughly and explicitly linked Canada's past to the present in a thoughtful way that aims to help students navigate the world around him. A treat to listen to and patient with the flurry of questions that came his way. 10/10.
Professor Shipley is very knowledgeable and passionate about his course content. He presents his material in a way that makes you care as much as he does. He is an outstanding professor!!
He is a great & very very knowledgeable professor. He opened my eyes to the realities of my life that I had chosen to ignore so far. Listening to him & reading his book were painful for me. It changed my view of Canada & the world we live in. His book is very very evidence-based & very easy to read in terms of the difficulty of his prose. I
He is great! Very informative, clear, and extremely useful for truly understanding the political landscape of Canadian politics and foreign policy. He also takes the time to respond to every question, comment and provides additional material. Overall, a great guy.
This professor and class opened up my eyes to politics and history rarely taught but is extremely important. Glad I had a chance to attend. He is caring, passionate and funny.
This is the kind of course you'll remember because we learned about history, with support, in a way that helps you understand what's going on now, and why. Professor Shipley has a contagious passion for research and is NOT boring. He keeps it real even when he nerds out. He really is nice and this class will actually make you smarter.
Tyler was a fantastic lecturer and his class taught me a lot about history that I was missing out on. He really cares about teaching the material in an accessible way and it shows.
He's clearly done much research into that about which he lectures, and he conveys the information very clearly. It was truly eye-opening and challenged many myths I'd held about Canada and its history. I highly recommend this course, as well as the prof more generally.
Very interesting lectures, good speaker. actually makes you wanna research the topics on your own accord.
Great professor all around, he taught me so much about the world and capitalism. If you are really looking to learn, keep your mind open and you will walk away with more knowledge than your peers. I highly recommend taking his course!
I don't recommend this class if you are balancing school and work. Every week, his PowerPoints are 100 slides long with a lot of information to take in. Also assigns two essays throughout the semester and his exams ask of 1 page long answers per question. He is passionate and caring but I don't recommend unless you're passionate about history.
great class and professor, lectures are engaging, eye-opening, and informative. His lectures and such an effect on me that I switched my major. 10/10 would recommend.
Passionate professor on all things capitalism and tearing down such constructs. Most content in his lectures revolves around materialistic marxist dialectics. Shipley seems to fixate on the sins of your European ancestors. Religion is presented an insignificant obstacle to overcome and figures such as Jesus only serve as racial arguments.
Big picture thinker. Says all of the important and true things that most people are afraid to say. Does not care about the feelings of the countries and corporations that destroy people and the planet.
The course was interesting at first, however, as time goes by it became uninteresting because of the learning materials of the professor which consisted of a recorded video of him purely talking about the topic for an hour, NOT even an interactive video.
Even thought it was online with no live lessons, the prof videos were interesting and kept my attention because they were real about the economics of our life. He talks about jobs and work and things that are not just charts and math. Beware: he hates crypto! But he makes some good points and I actually decided not to buy crypto after his lessons.
Seems very fixated on things of little importance to the material taught and of little importance to grading methodology. In other words, what you have to spend the most time on is not what you're graded on.
I expected this to be a standard eocnomics class with supply and demand and calculations. But the class is actually about our real life and we talk about our jobs a lot. Prof makes us look at our jobs differently and we get to see the way it is unfair at work. Also about inflation and capitalism topics. My favorite business class this semester.
Really amazing to study course with prof shipley, I learned a lot of things about economics when I started this I didn't know a single thing about economics and now I can at least understand every aspect of economics and that's gonna be helpful in my field. I really thankful for great teaching.
Professor Shipley is a wonderful communicator, he is funny and approachable. His course helped shed some light on widely hidden parts of history.
Take this elective with Tyler instead, Assignments and Quizzes are more manageable. He makes the learning modules by himself, and it's clear how much effort he puts into the storytelling and arguments.
Professor Shipley brings the dry topic of economics to life with his engaging lectures and real-world insights. Though the workload can be heavy, Unstuck study was a game-changer for exam prep. Overall, a rewarding and eye-opening experience.
Lenient on grading, but made us write an excessive amount for like 5-10% a piece. I was taking money, market, and people from this prof as an elective and he was insistent on assigning arduous time consuming tasks as if they were actually helping us develop knowledge and skills rather than being pointless busywork. (Final exam was 3 ESSAYS for 25%)
Has a deep rooted fear of every student is using AI. If you've always been a strong writer, critical thinker, and are well articulated be aware he will assume every student is using AI. If you're naturally a bright student you will be forced to minimize your abilities.
