He's pretty chill. Makes a lot of mistakes when demonstrating problems. Doesn't allow calculators but does easier problems to compensate. Curves. No graded homework but do it or you wont be prepared for the tests. You won't get dropped if you don't come but you'll lose points. Goes slow esp in beginning but miss one class and you'll be far behind.
Tyler White is one of the best mathematics professors at nova. He teaches his curriculum from a strict and precise method. He may seem intimidating at first, but his teaching methods will help you understand a subject such as Calc 2 with a thorough understanding. You need to show him that you are willing to give 100%, and he will come through.
He's a great teacher and was extremely helpful. Do the assigned homework so you can do well on the quizzes. If you think you don't need to do well on the "bonus" quizzes, then you fail at the most basic of math anyway. Staying on top of the quiz material really helped me be ready when exam day came. Good luck to you, study often.
If you put effort into the class and ask questions of him as needed (go to his office hours!), it is an easy class and you'll know what he'll expect of you. He may come off as "don't give a f*ck" but he genuinely cares about his students as long as you care about your work. (If you give him attitude, he'll give that attitude back.) Awesome guy.
He knows what he is doing. If you really want to learn take his class
Tyler White Is an amazing professor, he really fits my teaching style!
An amazing professor. I have to admit i didn't like him before, i thought his tests were too hard and he is trying to fail everyone. But he truly cares about what his students learn. Work hard, do the homework ask questions, and YOU WILL get a good grade in this class.
I want to be nice but with Mr. White, but he is by far the worst professor I've ever had in my life. His tests are nothing like the homeworks he assigns and he doesnt engage the class at all. Dont take this class unless you want to be up all night studying.
If you want to really learn the material and not just fulfill a requirement then Dr. White is the perfect instructor for you. His tests are comprehensive but also fair. He doesn't try to trick you, and he goes out of his way to be available if you need extra help. Great instructor! Great course! Who said Calc 2 was hard?
GREAT TEACHER! Is pretty clear in his lectures and explanations, expect to do the work you are given becasue quizeas and tests are all based on homework. He is funny and will always help you with any question you have.
Dr. white is a great professor. If you think he will just let you roll through easily you are mistaken. You will have to work for every grade you want to get. I understand calculus very well because I had to work hard in his class. The class will be tough the first few weeks but you will get used to it. DO THE HOMEWORKS! EVERY ONE OF THEM!
Tyler white is a fantastic professor. He really knows the subject and tries his best to teach you everything you actually need to know in order to succeed in later courses. Yes, his tests can be tough but if you did the HOMEWORK they are really not that bad. He also curves and gives a TON of partial credit. I highly recommend him to anybody.
The man, the legend. Dr. White is one of the most talented faculty possible to take at NOVA, and at George Mason University, where he also teaches. The guy has his own theorems in Linear Algebra, has done original work in diverse areas of math. Genuine mathematician, who also loves teaching. Take. Or forever risk being a second-rate scientist.
Tyler White is awesome. He doesn't just teach the answers to problems, nor does he run on about the technical proofs for hours. He briefly uses proofs to justify the material then teaches you what problem solving is about.
Great teacher.
Mr. White is a great teacher to be with for Calculus. He really does help create a strong foundation for the upcoming math classes. His lectures are really wordy (less visuals) but if you pay attention you can learn a lot out of it. He is also hilarious. To me he is like a 30 year old kid with the mind of a genius.
DR white is one of the best math professors i ve ever had. His lectures are brainstorming because he doesn't only give you theorems and teach you how to apply them, he also prooves every single theorem in the textbook. People say his tests are tough. Well, if you are aiming for an easy A with no hardworking, then don't take DR white.
great teacher. Knew exactly what to expect on tests, and he was always willing to help, and was very clear with his lectures
I don't understand how this guy has a 4+ rating. He teaches us concepts we don't need to know and emphasize on them, which confused the class. Then he gives us a handful of examples, and then gives us hw which are very different than the examples he gives us in class. He also got pissed at someone for giving him a honest opinion about works he give
Great
The class is very tough if you're not studying and taking notes properly, his lectures are clear on what to expect and if you do the majority of hw problems and understand it the tests are easy. His lectures are wordy as he wants his class to understand the theory behind calculus, it's necessary to do the hw to see actual problems.
I took linear Algebra with Dr. White. I got a C. We had many snow days but he kept on schedule. His lectures are very clear and helpful. You have to do your homework. Tough grader but he is fair and he is there to teach you. Probably will take discrete Math with him. personal opinion : He is one of the best math profs, I had bad ones so i know.
NOT an easy A class. He is an exemplary professor who strives to teach you calculus, not teach you how to take tests. His lectures can get a bit technical, but involve almost every single type of problem on the test. The tests are concept based, slightly difficult, but fair. He gives sometimes generous partial credit and curves the grade. Take him.
Although he does not engage in class a lot, as long as you listen, you will understand his lectures. I sat in front because we had a big class and I suggest you do this too. His tests are a lot like the examples he gave during lectures. Doesn't grade homework but he will check if you did it. Easy to consult and meet outside of class
He taught really well. But he is so hard. It is definitely not an easy a. The subject is hard enough, but he finds a way to make it harder. Pay attention if you choose him.
Teaches without complication. Always makes sure the information is clear. Not everything he teaches is on exams, but he explains in detail for the student to learn rather than for the tests. Only credits the effort made in homework. He's calm and organized. Fair examination and grading. Generally, he's one of the best math teachers in the business.
He is the worst professor ever. He talks way too much and his exams are difficult and. DONT TAKE IF YOU'RE NOT GOOD AT MATH
The class is not an easy A. Lots of homework and the tests are moderately difficult but are fair if you study. Do homework for practice even if it's not graded. Take advantage of the math lab and his office hours to pass. He is NOVA alumni and now has a Ph.D. He cares about students learning not just passing. Work hard. Experience was rewarding.
Dr. White is a genius when it comes to math. His class is very tough, but if you pay attention and ask for clarification on what Dr. White is teaching, you should pass. With readily available office hours and an extensive amount of homework questions, Dr. White provides many resources to effectively pass the class. Great guy overall, but tough
I took him in 173 and got an A with a huge score, then decided to take him again in 174 and got a B, simply because there was no graded HW (my fault, should've done better). If you take him, especially in 174, Put maximum effort to get an A. His tests and grading are fair. He always makes sure all is understood and encourages students to think.
Great proffessor , Took him for 173 and 174. Calc 1 and 2 . got A's in both. Teaching style is great. Finally understood math! Do all the homework and you will pass
Highly recommend not taking this class unless you're a math nut to begin with. Dr. White is a brilliant mathematician but to the point where he can't teach. Most of the class is definitions and background of the problems instead of him actually working out the problems and teaching it in a way where it makes sense.
dont recommend
I honestly felt like his lectures are complex to understand and he always teaches the theory behind theorems first. He typically leaves about 15 minutes for examples so it's slightly hard to finish the homework if you didn't understand the theory behind his lessons. Personality-wise, he's very intelligent and sarcastic.
Horrible. He is not clear with lecturing and makes too many mistakes during class and students correct all of them. I asked him for help with textbook homework, but he got confused with the problems he assigned to us and told me to go to math tutoring center. Don't take any classes with him.
First time teaching this class, everything's online except lecture, got the feel he never checked what's on our homework or quizzes. If he thought a section was stupid, he wouldn't go over it very much. He's not super hard but he was always really frustrated with the course.
Dr. Tyler is a good mathematician but he is not a good math professor. he has four exams and one final ,and final replace your lowest exam. Exams aren't difficult but he is not going to explain the concepts clearly sometimes in the class so you might have to study and do homework questions a lot to do good on the exams and understand the material.
I took Dr White for two classes this semester, MTH 295 and MTH 267. Overall, he is very talented at teaching but is very tough. Dr White really wants you to learn mathematics, not just calculations or formulas. I came into these classes with only MTH 264 knowledge, and I would highly recommend MTH 265 and MTH 266 before MTH 267 and MTH 295.
wont recommend to anyone, don't take him!!
Dr. White is one of my favorite teachers tbh. His lectures are entertaining and has the class participate a lot. He's one of the best mathematicians at NVCC, and if you really wanna learn math, and don't mind a few cuss words/mistakes then he's your man.
if you have option, don't take him
Dr. White is very refreshing to have as a professor - he empathizes with the students on the parts of the course which are frankly ridiculous and done to intentionally confuse the student. He understands the confusion and understands why it is ridiculous. He is fun and a great teacher, and knows how to connect with students.
He's not the greatest professer. He doesn't seem to care if you are having some difficulty on a problem or on the Excel assignment he gives you. If you have the chance, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
This class was pretty good. I felt that I learned a ton, and I received an A in the course. There is a ton of homework but it isn't graded, so just do as much as you can and until you understand the material. If you do all the homework you should definitely get an A. The tests are hard, especially the 3rd, but he is a pretty lenient grader.
Clear assignments on mymathlab, pace is average-high. 3 large projects that can be time consuming. Excel experience helps. Reading the assignments clearly is key, especially for excel assignments and projects. If you miss something or forget to post a discussion, there's no mercy. Course was tolerable, but would not look forward to. -math hater
At this point I have had Dr White for 3 classes: MTH 266, MTH 267, MTH 295. Dr White remains my favorite professor at NOVA. Dr White really loves to teach the theory to motivate topics learned in class and also mentions applications of mathematics in the real world. As far as grading goes, he is a fair grader and tests require good understanding.
I am not blessed with a Mathematical mind and Professor White was prompt and patient with my abundant inquiries. Although there were a few answers that remained vague, he always followed up asking if he answered my question in an understandable way.
Very unprofessional and he curses a lot during his lectures. He tries to keep the class engaged by asking questions. Textbook was online and free with solutions to the even problems. He assigns tons of HW but you don't have to do all. Do enough to get the hang of the chapter. 2 tests and 1 final. 2 projects. There was also a grade for attendance.
I wasn't a fan of his cussing in class. But, as long as you do all of the assigned homework you will be good.
He is easily one of the best math professors I have ever had during my time at NOVA. His class is not easy and you really have to do all of the HW to do well on the tests but I learned so much in this class. He's extremely helpful you just have to ask for help when you need it. Yeah he curses but I personally don't care.
decent professor and his class is however you make it. If you go into class prepared with questions he will spend the majority of time explaining it step by step so you understand His teaching style wasn' t for me but I was able to teach myself so I did well. Some students failed, most got Cs but I got an A the exams and projects are key to pass
Mid-semester he "Updated" how he weighs grades and my grade went from a B+ to a C-! His answer was "I don't know why your grade dropped, but I can't help you." He never gave a clear explanation of why he changed how he weighted grades or why my grade dropped. If he's your only option then be cautious and always know what your grade is.
Worst professor I've ever had at NOVA. 90% of assignments are autograded by MyMathLab and his announcements each week just say what is due. His projects are IMPOSSIBLE. His instructions are so ridiculously bad and filled with contradictory statements. He replies to emails quickly, but his responses will just confuse you more. He taught me nothing.
He is the worst math teacher I have ever had. Never helped to understand anything we learned, only read off slides from the textbook, did work without explaining what he did, and you end up teaching yourself everything. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
Took this class simply because I had to. No one in my class had a clue what was going on all year, he teaches as if everyone wants to be a mathematician, and typically ignores those who do very poorly in math (such as myself). Emailing him was very difficult and he provided little to no help when it was heavily needed. CHOOSE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR!
Professor White was a very kind man. He actually ended up bumping my grade up from a C+ to a B-. His class was very chill... he was always ready to answer questions both in class and outside of class. He was reasonable with the pandemic and with us being online. Yea, he cursed here and there but it wasn't offensive at least not to me..
Professor White is an expert in the field of math. However, he refused to teach the topics in an easy-to-understand way. He made the material 10x times harder and literally did not care about how well his students were doing in class. Doing textbook problems was the study method I used to survive. Use textbook and u will succeed.
I thought he was cool at first. Quickly became obvious he was un prepared. Has several policies on late work that has nothing to do with discipline and more him not wanting to do any work.
This class was taught through Pearson, and the professor didn't know the material and graded off of an answer key. He was very rude and took a very long time to answer emails. Never left feedback on any assignments of any kind. Never taking again, and he was a very tough grader.
he is very unprofessional, and is horrible at giving written directions.
This is my first college MTH class. He is amazing in a way. Just study the group assignments and homework. That's where the exam questions come from, and you will be fine. I didn't get an A+ OR B+, but you will enjoy his lectures if you do your part as a student.
Great professor. testing into this class means you understand math to a certain extent. if you do ALL your math lab assignments and score above 90 which is possible cos it shows you how to solve it, that should place you at a B. Exams are 90% of what is in your math lab. if you know how to use excel that's a + on the projects. GOODLUCK
Legit is the worst professor I've ever had. This guy not only cannot give out clear instructions on excel assignments but also barely taught us and gives no feedback. CHOOSE SOMEONE ELSE.
Im not good at math and we all know why youre looking at his rate my professor because you want an easy A, there is a lot of homework, 3 excel assignments, 3 exams which you can practice by taking a practice exam, and 2 projects, study the mathlab questions because you will see some of it on the test, I found myself teaching myself a lot.
Don't take this class he sucks. He's always mad about something and he makes you feel stupid for no reason at all. Tbh I skipped his class a lot since I felt like going to his class wasn't even helpful. Everything he teaches you in class is like the homework. He's all over the place and doesn't know what he's doing. Don't take his class.
All the students complaining about Professor White are clearly slackers or just plain dumb. As long as you do the homework and attend class, you'll get an A. He is very familiar with the material and teaches it effectively. Exams were easier than I thought it would be. Just do the homework because the problems come from there.
Honestly the math department is a hit or miss at NOVA. I would try not to take him he lacks organization and complains the whole class. Why even go into class where the prof doesnt wanna be there. Awful at explaining things and he has a zero tolerance policy for late work. Waste of time and money. Find someone worth your tuition y money.
His homeworks are easy because you can retake them unlimited amounts of times. However to those saying the exams are based on the HW - they are only to an extent. During the units sections, you suddenly had to know squared notation. Read the textbook as well. Homeworks actually weighed more than exams.
He is very on point in what he teaches. There is a lot of homework but they allow you to retake them as many times as you can. Projects are a bit unclear needs to write better instructions to better understand what he wants from them. Overall he's a very good teacher and very understanding.
This class was made for me. The materials for this class were attainable. Professor was understanding, patient and very fair with his grading. The only criticism I have of this course is the projects. The instructions were unnecessarily long but other than that, the homework, the tests, and the group activities were easily completed and helpful.
He is a great professor if youre willing to put work in. He will help you during student hours if you have any questions on projects. He replies to email on the same day. The HWs are a bit long but you can take it unlimited times.
Avoid. Class consists of 2 hours of notes from the textbook. HW is incredibly long and is not graded but you will fail if you don't do it. Only 3 Grades, 2 exams and a final. Final is worth 40% but if you wish you can void one exam to make the final 65%. Is extremely lazy and will sigh whenever you ask him a question. No extra credit. NotNegotiable
I hate this Professor with all my heart, for first destroying my GPA and then not caring for my learning in general. I will be speaking to nova about his teaching capabilities, so maybe I can save students in the future from ever having him. He is terrible - I hope he reads this. DO NOT TAKE
Whoever doesn't like Prof. White is insane, he's super knowledgeable in his field. It's a tough course in general, so you can't blame him for it. Lectures are useful DON'T SKIP, 2-3 homework/week but they're easy. Exams and finals aren't worth much, practice exams will have similar questions to real exams. Ask him for more help with excel projects.
If you struggle with math I wouldn't recommend him. He moves very fast and doesn't post PowerPoint unless you email him for them. If you can teach yourself math/understand math easily he is a good prof for u. He tries to help with group activity but only leaves 10mins for them which isn't enough time to get help. I struggled a lot in his class
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. do not take this class. I saw his bad reviews and still signed up because it was my only option but I suggest you dont do that. He doesnt care about his students actually learning and understanding the material. When you ask questions he just gets annoyed like hes so angry you dont understand. Dont take this class.
Prof. White isn't a great prof. at all! He goes too fast with the slides, he doesn't actually help you and if he does he gets annoyed. he can't give out proper instructions to safe his life. I just won't take him in general. save the money and stress and him someone else.
Pros: Clearly understands the content, organized, and punctuated. He's accessible outside of class. He finds a clear link to previous lessons. Cons: He often responds to answers to questions with sarcasm. This works for me, but is understandably harsh if you were truly answering to try your best. He also does not allow extensions without paperwork.
I passed so that's all that matters to me. He was good. Very knowledgeable in this field. Put the time and effort in and you'll be fine. Take pictures of slides and yeah. He was good.
Prof. White is a great lecturer and his exams are fairly easy. He assigns a lot of homework but you will definitely come out of the class with a deep understanding of the subject. Once you get past his unpleasant personality, the class great.
This class is very homework heavy, but if you understand the homework you will almost certainly get an A on tests. He doesn't try anything tricky or sneaky; follow his syllabus and you'll be fine. If you're looking for a personable teacher, go elsewhere. If you're looking to get out what you put in, take the class.
This class seems easy, but the weight of the work is crazy. In the syllabus, you need to study for at least 8 hours a day to pass your exams. Also, you need to upload your homework through canvas by paper.... He won't tell you how to upload it on the very first day, he just expects the class to know everything. If you struggle math don't take him..
You know that we all have experienced bad teachers but it is the first time I see someone with all descriptions ! HE IS THE WORST TEACHER EVER ! I won't call him a good professor , because apparently he doesn't know anything about math . All he say is I am teaching you what I have learned in high school !!!
To be really honest I knew the fundamentals of mathematics when I took this class. He honestly expects you to understand every concept from a to z in 4 months (per semester). He goes way too fast while presenting his slides and to prepare for this class you need to study 8 hours everyday. Some students passed and some students failed. So Idk tbh
Worst Professor Ever My Advance Advisor said my High School transcript and Math Knowledge was enough for this class It was not this professor gave us completely hard homework that needed NOVA level prerequisite I also had reasons to jump ahead in the self paced course he was belligerent at me for doing so as soon as that came I dropped out Fast
He is a great mathematician, but rough as a teacher. If you don't understand something right away, he gets really frustrated and the class is ridiculously exam-oriented; its worth 85%. One thing I did like was how organized and systemic his lectures were. Theory, Proof, example, repeat. Best advice I can give, do the assignment the day its given
This class was extremely homework and exam oriented. We had one lecture per week, to which the slides and material he went over were never posted to the class canvas page. The projects were very simple and he included all instructions. He left you with what you needed and that was it.
There is a lot of homework, and they get harder as the lectures go on. TAKE THE PRACTICE EXAMS. If you do only one thing for this class it should be to take those. Projects can be hard but they're explained well. I found Pearson videos better than the actual lectures because it was at my pace. You can pass this class but you need to put in work.
I will say this man was one of the few professors who actually cared to prepare his students for studying math at the undergraduate level and I only say this after taking his class in spring 2020 and currently taking 300 level math classes at CNU. My difeq class I'm in now is a joke so far thanks to what this man put us through.
When you're doing homework what he wants you to do is complete your homework on paper then taking a picture on you're phone. But the problem is he doesn't tell you that he expects you to know everything.
Really nice and understanding! Willing to answer any questions and spend time outside class to help you understand. Homework only required the effort of trying, not getting EVERYTHING right, which was really nice. And tests were based off of the homework program! There were some projects that were a little difficult, but overall was great :)
No one said that I had to do excel homework for math. It was easy with all the homework and the tests were based on the homework you learn. He tells you what to do for the excel, I'm just stupid at understand.
Straightforward zoom classes and homework assignments that you can find easily through CANVAS, make sure to take good notes during class so that the homework assignments are completed on time. You are allowed to have one page of formulas and notes for the exams which really help, you can also reach him very easily after class to get help.
In my experience, his MTH154 class was super easy. His lectures were straightforward but he was able to go on tangents I didnt mind. He also seems to really care about his subject and is willing to help. Nearly every class we got let out early. He was a good professor and the class is not hard under his teaching.
This class is challenging, but using tools like Unstuck AI alongside diligent studying can help you succeed. The professor has high expectations, but engaging with the material pays off.
Hilarious professor. Made differential equations a breeze. Lots of HW, but you don't have to do all. Exams are curved and easier than the hardest HW problems. He wants participation during class, and breaks down each topic to make it understandable.
Professor White is a very humorous and out-going person. He also a knowledgeable to the subject. He gives you chances to ask him for help if you need. Lectures are easy to understand and not heavy at all if you pay attention.
