Clearly states expectations. Gives good examples. gets the class to participate in lessons. Goes of on tangents and tells funny stories. It would be imposible to fail her class unless you never opened the book, took a test, or came to class! I will be taking the next level with her :)
She's a really cool teacher. If you read the text book the tests are easy. Very laid back class.
She made us write a paper for homework every class because our class never participated in class discussions. 16 papers in all, one page each. They didn't count for you, they just counted against you. Miss 2, and your grade went down a letter grade. She showed up late every class. If you can get over the uselessness, it's a somewhat easy A.
Very funny teacher definitely kept me entertained but was constantly late for class 10-15 minutes late, highly disorganized and chose test dates at the top of her head, and dismissed classed constantly because she had to study. Other then that, if you read the book and show up to class you'll pass! No homework other then reading a
HORRIBLE! SHE WAS LATE EVERYDAY AND DIDNT HAVE A BOOK FOR THE FIRST 3 WEEKS! She bribed us to write her a good review with an A on the next test! SHE IS THE WORST!
She seemed really nice in the beginning. and said if you showed up you would pass. Completely false. She made up test days. c said the testing bank where she made her test didn't have the stuff we went over in class and just wished us the best of luck with a test she did not prepare us for. Know that we didnt go over any of it. WORST TEACHER EVER!
...very funny and entertaining teacher but very disorganized..she would be late most of the time..as the semester went by more and more students would drop her class..she's nice and all but not a really good teacher
HORRIBLE! DO NOT TAKE HER!! Took her online 8 week course and she assigned so much work the entire class was having problems finishing before the final. Unrealistic deadlines. Does not respond to e-mails and does not grade stuff in a timely manner or give feedback. Save yourself the sleepless nights because you are doing homework.
She's not bad for an 8-week course. If you just read the text book and show up to class so that you know what the test dates are, you'll be fine. She is not your typical instructor, as you have seen prior comments-those are all true..but I wouldn't say it was a terrible class. I got an A, and we didn't have to stay the whole class time window.
Very helpful teacher..easy class. It true some classes she made write a one page paper for each class..but come on it's only a page. Different style of teaching yes, but at least the things you learn are actually relevant to your life. I took her for both Soc 201 and 202. It's not a hard class, but don't try to take advantage of her niceness.
One of my most enjoyable classes. teacher is enthusiastic as well as laid back. most of your grade is class participation and current event summaries due each class, minus 1 final paper can't beat that if your'e looking for an oppurtunity for an A and a chance to voice your opinion. class was early a.m but still fun. looking fwd to her next class.
Great class! Very laid back and entertaining, knows her stuff and explains the material extremely well. Recommend for people with an interest in the subject area.
She's an awsome teacher but she gets side tracked a lot. Taking notes in her class is hard because she jumps around everywhere which can make it very difficult to keep up. You need the study guide. She's willing to help you if you're willing to learn. I got an B in her class but I studied a lot and made a lot of notes but barely read the textbook.
She was great: funny but knew the material.
Don't take this professor...Im serious...she has no interest in teaching. Always in a rush to go home evenon test days, she will ask u to hurry so she can leavel.
Professor Ty was the most interesting out of all my professors this semester. She made going to class exciting and if you just listen to what she says, getting an A is easy. Also, if you suck at listening just read your book and the questions come right out of there mostly.
If you like open-debate then you will like her class! No text book was used. Conclusion: either love or hate it... I did n't learn much though.
Didn't learn anything. She is rude and offensive. Repeatedly made fun of students. Repeatedly told us if we got her gifts then she would give us an a. Don't take her.
She's definitely NOT your average professor & she can rub you the wrong way. she has no filter at all, but that makes it interesting. Don't take her if you get offended easily and like to remain invisible in class. -She is very knowledgeable & tells really cool stories/scenarios which really help 2 remember the info. She gives opportunity for EC!
very stubborn and a lot of attitude but if you show up and have intelligent opinions you will get an A.
She is very unorganized and is unprofessional! She did not want to be disturbed the last week because of her personal life and it was really hard to ask questions because she would laugh and joke all the time. Truth is you either love her or hate her!
I don't know what everyone is saying, she's a great professor. You will love this class. Easy A! LOTS OF EXTRA CREDIT! TAKE HER
she's a great professor! lots of extra credit
Great Excellent Super Cool Professor, I learn a lot on all her discussions she knows whats she is talking about. I highly recommend any student to take her class you will be fine as long you do her paper assignments and discuss. in class.
I took Ty's class during the summer, so I'm not sure how she is during the year, but I really enjoyed this class! She really knows her stuff & relays it to the class in a simplified, more understandable manner. Attend lectures and really listen to what she says in order to get a good grade. It isn't hard to pay attention. She's pretty interesting.
Took the summer course. It was great, Dr. Ty is very energetic and makes you actually want to focus and learn. The class wasn't time consuming and by studying all of her lecture notes and doing the reading, I got an A. She's also a very chill prof, just pay attention and be nice.
I took her Sociology 202 6 week summer class. This class was purely discussion based. We got in some heated debates about subject. We talked about Travyon Martin, Riley Cooper, Police Brutality, #FreePalestine, Politics, so much more. She is very passionate about what she believed in and got mad when I challenged her. All in all easy A if u do work
This class was a joke, attendance wasnt mandatory for us because it barely seemed like it was mandatory for her. You read the chapter take the test and thats it. I learned more about her background, political views than I did the subject. Her EGO is HUGE and makes a point in telling you so! Guess what? I dont care! Easy A ever, worst teacher ever.
Teaches from the textbook, tests are also from the textbook. If you read that, you should be fine. Attendance is NOT mandatory but lectures help to clarify the chapter. Very sarcastic (so that may rub you the wrong way), but easygoing. No assignments and 5 tests (including the final). Overall an easy class, just took it to fulfil gen. ed. req.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had in a year and half. She always be sarcastic with students. She never clarify answer. The exams are multiple choice which I though gona be easy but I was very confusing . She is really a tough grader I hv ever had. My all grades are A and B but she gave me D. which drop me GPA badly, don't take her class.
Easy class, but she's not a good teacher. Very unorganized. Her lectures weren't that helpful and I just learned everything from the textbook. She could be funny, but sometime she went a little too far with her jokes. The test are easy though as long as you study. Attendance isn't mandatory so you can just study and show up for test and get an A.
Terrible teacher. Not clear what is on the exams whatsoever. One out of 30 students got an A on the first exam, mostly CD, and she literally says "it's your guys fault, not mine". She acts like this all the time. Total lack of respect for her students and extremely obnoxious. Talks way too much about herself. Would not take again. Ever.
All you need to do is read a chapter before class starts and you are basically covered. Doesn't hurt to go to class either to reinforce that studying. Tests are very easy and I can remember most of the things that were in class.
Very rude and arrogant.
She is very rude and she assumes she is always right. Attendance and participation is mandatory. Easy class, but she is hard to deal with at times.
I understand both sides of the reviews on this page. Yes, Ty is very funny, outgoing, and gives lots of extra credit opportunities. However, her lecture is unstructured, so you have to self learn. The only way you will pass, in her words, is read the textbook. Her fifty multiple choice questions come from a word bank from the test guide.
She is amazing want to take a meaningful class that can relate to everyday life. take any of her classes she is amazing. i took every single one of her classes. read the chapters and you're good to go. she has a great sense of humor and is super down to earth LOVE HER
She's interesting. She's really laid back, can be funny, and she usually ends class an hour early. On the other hand, she isn't helpful at all and can be pretty rude. Her tests are pretty easy if you just read the textbook. While I wouldn't say she's a good teacher, the class is an Easy A so I'd say take her if her personality won't bother you.
She goes over the test material through lectures and she points out exactly what's going to be on the tests. Showing up, staying awake - you're guaranteed an A. However attendance isn't mandatory, so preparing by reading the textbook and showing up only on test day is doable. Highly recommended for an easy grade but also insightful lectures.
As a professors she useless, but the material is easy. I didn't even show up to any of the classes after the first two and still passed the class with an A just by reading the textbook. Her class is honestly a joke. Take her if you need a GPA booster.
Open book chapter tests straight from textbook. Individual presentations given in every class by students. I would've preferred professor lecturestudents discuss rather than hear students' presentations. Class discussions were interesting. Class rarely went 3 hours long.
I liked her, but I can see how she might rub some people the wrong way. She does have an ego, but not the the point where she is intimidating or rude. She just likes to joke around and she is pretty funny. Her lectures are decent and the tests are easy if you read the chapters before the test. Good class and Easy A. I'd recommend her.
Easy class, but she's a terrible teacher. She's not really involved with the class and rushes through lectures skipping over lots of material. If you take her, I'd recommend just skipping class and reading the chapters on your own and just show up for the tests. Attendance isn't required and class is a waste of time, but it's an easy A.
If you are good a good test taker take this class. The tests are really easy and everything is straight out of the textbook. No reason to even attend class (attendance is optional). She's a really laid back teacher, although I wouldn't go to her for help. I'd take her again though because she's easy.
She's a crazy/funny person. Her SOC 201 wasn't very hard, just memorization from the book. She doesn't give homework and she gives extra credit opportunities. If you study the book you can get an A.
When she is interesting in what she is talking about it was the best classes, but you could tell when she didn't want to be there. She likes to talk to people about there personal life and if you are an odd ball she will laugh at you and kind of poke fun at you. If you don't like to read, you will not pass!
easy grader, however class is very very boring and she often goes off topic and yells at you if you dont listen to her with undivided attention at all times.
Dr. Ty told us on the first day that she preferred not to be emailed or asked questions or anything like that, which is fine by me because I generally don't bother getting extra help from professors. When she would assign us these small assignments she would give us no information on what it was we were supposed to be handing in. Unbelievable.
Here's some advice, take her class and just show up to take the tests. Her lectures were a waste of time and you could learn everything on the tests just by reading the textbook. Grade is based on 4 exams and final which got cancelled when I took her. Only take her because it's an easy A. Also offers extra credit.
Looked forward to going to class every week. She's hilarious and likes to have a good time in class. If you go to class and read the chapter summaries you will be fine. She basically spells out what's going to be on the test so there's no reason to fail. There are 4 exams total and they are every two chapters. She also gives a ton of extra credit.
I took her for 202, where she told us going in that it would be an oral-presentation intense class - something I don't think any of us were expecting. Long story short, she can be rude and unprofessional but I think it's good to deal with someone like this in life. Would recommend for the challenge. Just don't let her get under your skin.
Chapters are long and there are lots of information in each chapter. Therefore lectures are long but not boring. She explains subjects in everyday life to make sure students understand the subjects rather than memorizing the terms. Get ready to read and take notes. She is not a morning person so take the class late morning :) Lots of extra credit.
Dr. Ty was by far my favorite professor. She cares about her students and if you show up and participate you will pass. There were 4 100 point tests all multiple-choice and you could do poorly on all the exams and still make an A with extra credit.
Really easy class, but get ready to endure pointless lectures that don't really have anything to do with the exam's, ultra-liberal rants, rude jokes about students, and most of all her huge ego! If you can get past those things than go ahead. It's an easy class but a pain to sit through.
She is a fantastic professor! Her lectures are insightful and thought-provoking, she doesn't set students up for failure, and her feedback may be harsh, but how else is one supposed to learn? Textbooks are not necessary as she makes the material very clear from lectures alone. Just take notes and listen and you'll be fine.
Super easy class I got an A and showed up like 4 times. She's not the best teacher she can be a little obnoxious but she's harmless and is actually really funny and caring and makes the class interesting. It's an interactive course. Take her if you don't get offended easily.
All you need to do is put some effort into this course and she provides the opportunity to not only get an easy A but to learn the value of "reading with comprehension". Her lectures are straight out of the book in different words. Dont show up to class without reading the chapter and try to participate as if you did. You will get called out.
Dr. Ty is hilarious, super liberal, and she knows what she's talking about. Sometimes she may seem unorganized but she told the class she would be like that sometimes. The class is impossible to fail; there are hundreds of points for extra credit given out and the tests are literally based off of the lecture. Highly recommend!
Prof. Ty is a blunt person who tends to poke fun at everyone and everything. I found her class to be extremely easy; she tells you what will be on the tests, and as long as you put the time in, you can pass without much trouble. Her questions are straight out of the textbook. And even if you are doing poorly, there's a ton of extra credit.
if you can deal with dr ty, the class is an easy A. Make sure to read the textbook. the lectures are a waste of time.
Go to class and take notes- she practically recites the test during lectures. And, she notices the students that make the effort. Take advantage of the numerous extra credit opportunities, it is generous and adds up in the end! Her "humor" is blunt, so don't take her "jokes" too seriously.
Summer version of course is shortened. Less material is covered. Class isn't treated very professionally. Doesn't start on time. Easy A. Not much discussion, which would be nice. No tests in summer. great for credit, but not if you really want to learn much. Book not necessary if u attend lecture and take notes
I do not recommend this class for people who are seriously interested in sociology, you won't learn much. This is a easy A for those who just need the credit. She's funny but teaching was never her priority she sometimes only taught for 30mins out of the 3hr class and dismiss us. The tests she gives are word for word from the textbook review.
You have to present every class and the way she explains what she wants isn't clear at all. She's an amazing person but I didn't feel as though I learned anything from her.
As other reviews have said, if you're genuinely interested in sociology you should look elsewhere. I only cared about getting a good grade, yet still got a C (yikes!). Seriously though, this class is an easy A and I've been kicking myself since. She's super nice, however, I did get fed up with the feminist/ misandric jokes. Otherwise, nice & funny
Easiest class Ive ever taken.
She was somewhat entertaining.
Easy class, but if you have any opinion that is slightly conservative or not liberal she will go off on you. She was very rude and didn't make the class an enviornment a place to have constructive arguements. Just wants to preach her own views. Felt way too uncomfortable in her class.
worst teacher i have ever taken on campus. when i come to class i want to learn about the class and be informed on what i paid for not her political opinions that is irrelevant to the class or subject. she went on a 20 min tangent on her political beliefs randomly and called her self an activist and sure sounded like one. she did this regularly.
Pretty easy class. No homework besides reading and only graded on 5 tests. She was pretty relaxed, but didn't really seem like she wanted to be teaching. Lectures weren't very insightful and she ended class early an hour early almost every time. Could be funny sometimes and other times preachy and annoying.
Absolutely horrible experience with this professor. It seems like she doesn't care about teaching, her lectures have absolutely nothing to do with her exams. Would not recommend. I normally never leave reviews but my experience with her was so bad i had to warn others.
i loved her so much! she was so funny and entertaining and i would definitely take her again if i had the chance! she was also pretty easy and her tests are literally based off the textbook. just read it and show up to all classes so you can get all the information you need prior to her tests.
Dr. Ty is so many things but the word AMAZING sums it all up. She's hilarious, super liberal, feminist, and just a complete riot. She does have a short attention span and it's do to some medical stuff. She's truly an awesome person, pretty easy class. Liked her so much from Criminology, I took her Sociology class this semester. Still the best.
Very funny women. You will actually have to put in real effort to fail this class. A LOT of extra credit is giving out Im talking like 20+ points that count toward exams
Show up and pay attention during lectures, for the most part an easy A. My problem was mainly with the professor. She thinks shes funny, but shes just rude and tries way too hard. She goes off topic to just make fun of classmates. Class should be a welcoming environment with a professor looking forward to educating their students.
Dr. Ty seems like the cool professor, until she starts her hour long rant about how much she hates anything Conservative and then ends class early. Dont even need to show up to class unless its test day. If you read the book and take the (4) tests, you get an A. You wont learn anything thing from Dr. Ty, except to not take one her classes again.
Prof Ty claimed her bad ratings are bc of the color of her skin and sexual orientation. at first i felt bad, then realized she was just a careless teacher, unprofessional relationships with students, rude, and above all, submit in my final grades SO LATE that i couldnt transfer to a 4 year college until the following semester. Ive never had worst.
she delays in responding to emails which are critical for an online class and is extremely discourteous and un-understanding
She is horrible, such a slow grader, she assigns way to much work for an entry level sociology course. For test she has 5 discussion question each worth 10 points. She is the worst professor I have had at nova. I don't even know how she is allowed to teach. It is october 20 and I am still waiting for her to grade assignments I did in september
I initially took this class because it sounded interesting and fun to take but Prof. Ty is not a good instructor. She is very rude to students and tries to cover it by saying that she uses that type of humor in general. She does not support any other point of view that is not her own and I also noticed that she is racist to minorities. Be careful
The class itself is pretty simple and low effort. Do the bare minimum and you'll pass. My issue is with the conduct of this professor who is extremely unprofessional and rude. She clearly has a strong political bias and is very intolerant towards those with different views so please don't take her class if you're not a leftist.
She's the worst. She doesn't respond to emails. It's the last day of the semester and she still didn't grade any of our test ( the first one was of October 12th)
Honestly, Professor Ty is a very incompetent professor. The class consists of weekly journals where you have to write 3 -5 para. about some videos. She does not lecture at all, just talks about the videos for like 30-45 min, then leaves. The class met once a week instead of twice. Take for an Easy A, but not if you actually want to learn something.
Overall the class was not bad. The only thing that bothered me the most was that she was unaware of what her own curriculum consisted of, on all exams she did not know there were essay questions and did not have grades up on a timely manner.
Professor Ty is very chill, interesting, and funny. Make sure to read the textbook, read the syllabus!! attend class and try to participate and you will definitely get an A.
When deciding to take SOC 200 I was put off by Professor Tys ratings. Having experienced her class I understand why. Professor Ty is a more unconventional Professor she wants you to think and reason. She encourages discussion over lecture so you will be reading on your own a lot. But she loves engagement and I find her classes are never boring.
Professor McHellan doesn't talk about anything remotely regarding sociology. She is very rude when you say an answer that doesn't match what she says. The test are easy if you do read the textbook and the documentaries are very interesting. Dont take the class if you actually want to learn something.
When I first saw Professor McHellen's reviews I was nervous about what to expect, but those reviews could not be further from the truth. She is an amazing professor and I enjoyed her class so much that I am taking another course she offers this summer. She was very clear up front about the syllabus and expectations. She is AWESOME!!
A nightmare. DO NOT TAKE HER. She seems cool at first but she is by far the WORST professor I've had at NOVA so far. She is not caring or cooperative at all and very unorganized. Just getting in contact with her is almost impossible. Only take her if you want an easy A.
Dr. Ty is one of the very few reasons I actually enjoyed going to campus. For a lot of people in these ratings, they can't take criticism and rawness. Dr. Ty is raw, genuine, and honest. The coursework and load is not hard at all, unless you're someone more interested in socializing than learning. Easy A as long as you show up & read the textbook!
At first glance she's funny and down to earth. By the end of the semester you realize she's unprofessional, nonsensical, and grating. We had to teach ourselves about social problems and present an analysis every week, and no one was ever good enough for her. plus none of it got graded, the ONLY grade was the final. Don't bother taking her classes.
