I'm taking math 181 during the summer, and this guy is good. I'd recommend him for any math class
Kelly is a good professor, but sometimes he does go a bit fast. It's a summer class, so I guess I can't blame him. Although the content wasn't terribly difficult, it was hard keeping up with the fast pace.
Tough grader. Multiple guess exams. Explains well but dosent translate to good test scores.
Wonderful insightful lectures, if you show up to every class there will be no confusion of the content for you, is great at responding to e-mails, has tons of office hours and always takes time in and after lectures to answer questions, also gives explanations of feed back on exams
Professor Kelly's lectures are fairly dull, but he really cares about students understanding and is always willing to help if you're struggling. Tests can be tough but he really tries to make sure you're prepared and grades pretty easy. The online homework isn't much and he gives you plenty of time to complete it.
If you have taken PreCalc or Calc this class is easy you do not need to go to class. There is a lot of homework assigned, but it is easy points. He goes over the test material exactly the way he wants to see it on the test in the class before. Do not buy the book and waste your money, just buy MyMathLab.
He's a good guy. He teaches very clearly and explains all the concepts well. He encourages calculator use to find solutions (which is much easier and more accurate). He also cares for the class, when the test average was low. He allowed the students to make up half the points they missed on the test. I would definitely recommend him for STAT152.
Professor Kelly is easily one of the worst professors I've ever had. He skims over concepts in class and then makes his test significantly harder. Our class average was a 60%. Instead of trying to help his students, he just recommends that you drop his course. He is condescending, pompous, and should not be teaching. Avoid this class!
Professor Kelly is definitely knowledgeable of the subject but is horrible at teaching it. He teaches directly from the textbook and goes way too fast during lectures. His examples and the way he explains things is not a helpful way for students. His tests are beyond hard and the study guides don't help. I would not recommend taking him for 176
Worst teacher I've ever had. When anyone asks a question he acts like we are all dumb. Class average for two test was about a 60. Instead of trying to help he just suggested that we all drop. He talks really fast and won't slow down even when asked. He knows his stuff, just shouldn't be teaching it.
Absolute worst professor I've ever had. If you ask question and he thinks its a dumb question, he won't answer it. The study guides are completely different from the tests. All of our tests have been under a 60% average and he thinks that is good. His passing rate is 30% and when you do bad on a test he tells you to drop instead of helping you.
AVOID 176 WITH KELLY. He is rude, if you ask a question in class he talks down on you. His tests are so hard. Almost half of the class dropped because of how confusing he is. You have to go to the SI sessions or you will be lost. He goes super fast in class and skips a lot of steps. He does not curve. Almost more than 2 quizzes a week. Lots of hw.
Dr. Kelly is a very knowledgeable person and I respect him for that, but his teaching style isn't adequate if you only go to lecture. You'll have to go to him at office hours, attend SI sessions, stare at your book for hours, or hit the math center regularly in order to complete the homework with a decent grade. Good luck on the tests though.
Expects students to already know everything and insinuates that you are dumb if you need help.
Kind of a tough grader and expects the class to well even if everyone gets a low grade on a test. Quizzes are taken in every recitation so that is mandatory. I also suggest going to the SI sessions since the TA is a lot clearer in explaining things and will help better understand the concepts. Tough class.
Im gonna be honest, Professor Kelly was pretty terrible at the beginning of the semester. He moved very quickly through lectures which made it extremely difficult to follow along and the tests were insanely hard. He did improve his ways later in the semester. However, you should go to a lot of SI's if you want to pass the class.
This guy is quite the prof. We were in the fourth week of class and this "master stats professional" struggled with adding fractions. Not too sure what it takes to be a stats prof but if it pays well then it might be something I do because if this guy can do it, anyone can.
Professor Kelly is a good individual, he knows his material, but he was not meant to be a teacher. His class is mostly writing concepts rather than examples. He goes way too fast on lecture. My class peer and I tried to study together to make it easier but he was struggling by the same facts. The TA was mean and was on her phone during quizzes!!!!!
I was frustrated about how much writing we had to do to take notes (you basically copy down exactly whatever he writes on the board) and the note are very wordy. The material itself isn't difficult though, so as long as you take down the notes and are willing to look over them while doing the homework and work at it, you should do just fine.
He is a great professor and really goes into details with his examples. I loved his lectures!
He is a good professor. He explains the material pretty clear in lecture, so it was not too hard to understand. As long as you keep up with the homework and lecture, you should be fine. Although, there is a lot of notes you have to write down during class, so be prepared for that.
You will take a lot of notes, but he is really knowledgeable of the math he teaches, which makes his lectures very very interesting and intriguing.
He is very smart and knows what he is talking about however, the way he makes us take notes is terrible. He is extremely wordy and does not give enough mathematical examples... which is what the class is all about. He gives no extra credit. If you have taken pre calc before it shouldn't be too hard. Attendance is not mandatory either which is good
There is no attendance takes, so you technically don't have to show up, but if you don't you are screwed. Because this is a math class, the professor cannot just choose when and where to give points, so if you are wrong or make the wrong calculations you will lose the points. He is a good teacher, and has passion for the subject.
If you want to skip class and look up how to do the work on your own this is the guy for you. Hand writes his notes on the board with handwriting that is almost illegible. And does not actually finish problems he starts. Go ahead and read the book and google how to use your calculator. I asked questions and was referred to google. Don't take this
His lectures are very detailed, but they are extremely stale. Show up to ALL of the recitations as missing one can hurt your grade. The quizzes are easy as the TA basically gives you the formula that lets you get the answer. Do ALL of the online homework. The exams are easy but missing 1 or 2 points really hurts and he grades extremely harsh.
Goes really quickly through lectures, but does answer questions if need be. Was too quick for my style, only had enough time to either write the example or listen to him. Didn't fully understand the concepts. Quizzes on Friday with the TA are very helpful. No midterm.
Lectures involve a lot of tedious writing, but it was very helpful and clear. Does a great job preparing students for exams. I honestly felt like this was a straightforward class without any tricks. Just show up to lectures, study your notes, and you'll understand the material and do fine on the exams.
He knows his stuff, but he just is not a good teacher. He expects you to know a lot of things, which is fine, but he is quick and not very informative. The material is of average difficulty, but he doesn't explain topics well. The occasional rude response to a student question does not help his case at all either. He is just not a good professor
Tynan Kelly's lectures are very inefficient. Just spends class time writing words and descriptions rather than spending time on actual math. No one goes to his office hours because he is generally just a rude person. Ther worst part is he expects you to evaluate full triple integrals during the small test time you have!
Ty's lectures may be dense and though linear algebra isn't everyone's cup of tea, I think what he gives us is also very clear and helpful. He works through examples in class that are just like what we do on the homework and have tests on and always makes a thorough review sheet for each exam. If you go to class and do the work, you will get an A.
Not tons of homework, definitely the usual. Lecture heavy, basically the clear notes come from class time. But if you miss a day, a quick email and you've got the notes! This class was definitely one of the easier math classes I've taken. The final was one of the easier finals and the tests were not nervewrecking if you studied well. :)
Kelly is the best math professor I have had to date at UNR. He is young, enthusiastic and puts things in very simple terms. His Exam review materials are concise and do a great job of covering what appears on the tests. Biggest perk is if you are an independent learner his quizzes are online so you can learn at your own pace. 100% would take again.
Kelly definitely knows what he's talking about, but you can pretty much learn the material at home. A lot of what he says in class is said in the book. If you have this class, you can just go to the recitation and be fine if you're comfortable learning everything at home. He's an easy going guy.
Literally the worst professor I've ever had. He clearly knows what he is talking about but doesn't know how to effectively teach it and is generally just a rude person. I have taken this math course before in high school so the the material is not too difficult, but his lectures somehow made it more confusing.
He's a great lecturer and he uses a lot of examples, so long as you show up and pay attention you'll be fine.
MATH 301 is a really easy (and stupid) class but Kelly made it fun. He's cool and it's obvious he likes teaching which is always nice to see. Take him if you can
Dr. Kelly seems to know his stuff but is not good at teaching. His grading is extremely strict, detail oriented that does not largely impact the proof itself. His notes were taken word for word from the book and when students asked questions he would just repeat his notes. His review for tests were not up to date and would have incorrect solutions.
Hes a really great guy to learn from and had taught me a lot about a subject that I knew practically nothing about in a really short amount of time. I would definitely recommend his class because his lectures are engaging but also easy to understand.
Not too much homework and only 3 tests. If you pay attention to the lectures and follow his general proof format then most of the homework is pretty straightforward; he does include a new kind of problem on the homework every now and then. He does closely follow the textbook but he diverges to make things clearer or more technically correct.
As this is probably the first real math class math majors have to take, it takes a second to wrap your mind around the style. But once you get used to the idea of proofs in this context, Kelly will shape you well. His examples are great practice, and exams are easy if the study guide is taken seriously. Just do the homework and you will be fine.
I took this class as an elective and it became one the hardest classes I have ever taken. Since Kelly is a pure mathematician, he has a great focus on the way proofs should be written. Most of time, his lectures are just writing paragraphs of proofs. I do not recommend taking this course unless you absolutely have to. Very disappointed in the class
He's an alright teacher but he goes at a fast pass and makes the subject more difficult than it should be. He got his phD in math proofs so he's more enthusiastic in this class and is a strict grader. Id recommend another teacher.
Great professor! Clearley super knowledgable about the subject and has clear and direct lectures. He gives plenty of examples and explains even complex ideas really well. Tests are challenging but reasonable as long as you show up and pay attention and do your homework.
He's an alright teacher, goes too fast at times and uses a lot of the writing in the text book to explain stuff. The tests are pretty difficult and sometimes differ from the study guides.
Dr. Kelly is an awesome professor. He has a passion for what he is teaching and it really helps you enjoy what he is teaching and learn better. He is always willing to help and does what he can to help you understand the material. He goes above and beyond for his students.
Kelly is a great math professor. He is approachable outside of class and very helpful in office hours. He seems to care for his students. Analysis is obviously a harder math class than usual but his class was very much so manageable.
Dr. Kelly is a good prof who makes his expectations very clear. Lectures are great even though there is lots of writing. After class switched to online due to the corona virus Dr. Kelly made it harder, if anything. No leniency with grading and did not post any of the lectures to view later. Had unreasonable expectations considering the situation.
T Kelly is such a sweetheart. Decent lecturer, but makes "skeletal notes" that you fill in as he lectures that are so helpful. Miss rona definitely made this class harder, but T Kelly still did a good job lecturing and making things clear. He's accessible outside of class and responds to emails quickly. Calc 3 is hard, but he makes it manageable.
Made class more difficult after the virus situation. Would not recommend him as a teacher, but seems like a nice person.
I took him for both Math 182 (Calc 2) and Math 283 (Calc 3) and that was on purpose. I had a wonderful time w him in calc 2, and although he does work fairly quickly, he is happy to go back and go over a topic again if asked. Calc 2 was a class that I failed my first time taking(with a different prof), but once I took Prof Kelly's class it was easy
Easily my favorite professor this semester. He was super well prepared for the wack online stuff unlike pretty much all the rest of my professors so that maybe biases my opinion but I feel like that would transfer to other areas too. He genuinely cares about the material in Math 283 and it showed. Really just a good teacher amidst a lot of garbage
Maybe its because the course is taught over zoom, but the professor sped through lectures and went way too quick, even when asked to slow down the professor couldnt maintain that slower pace. It made it difficult to understand the proofs because you spend the entire time trying to keep up. Other than that, since its analysis it was pretty tough!
Amazing professor, he really knows what he is doing. The whole class is in proofs and he publishes his notes (at least for online) and they are super clear and easy to read. lots of partial credit in his exams and is available by appointment for office hours during online, and had set hours when in person.
Kelly was funny during class and explained calc 3 pretty well. His study guides are similar to his tests, which is nice. He had hw due Tuesday and quizzes on thursdays, so I liked that it was consistent. He replaces final w/ lowest test and drops a quiz. Tests are graded out of 50 though, so missing one question can really hurt your grade.
The material in this class is difficult to comprehend. Kelly gives in depth lectures at the speed of light so you have to pay attention, but his tests are not meant to hurt your grade. There is a quiz every week that, if you do your homework, anyone can pass with 100% and his grading is very forgiving. He does not give hard tests either.
I took Calculus II under another UNR professor last semester and got an A on it, however I am really struggling to get a decent grade on Calculus III. I am worried that my grade will slip below B. I attend all his classes. I feel as he is taking both online and in person class on the same subject here is something going on with grading.
I'm a straight A student in Math struggled under Prof Kelly. I could not understand his teaching style. I will not take any class under him.
Kelly is AWESOME! I took his 283 online during regular in-person semester. WebAssign for assignments and textbook. 4 exams total and no note sheet allowed (last exam is comprehensive). Since the class is online his lectures are pre-recorded, which I LOVE his note/lecture style. Always let him know your questions and he's always willing to help ^_^.
Office hours are where Kelly shines best. Besides being super helpful and supportive, he tries his best to make the course super manageable for students. I think the course should be a little harder, but the exams' difficulty was perfect. The exams reward you for knowing all of your fundamentals and are graded super generously.
proff kelly is super nice, he loves math and wants you to love it too. if you skip a lecture it can really set you back as he goes over a lot of content each one. the first test was easy and I was able to get 95% on it when I usually get 70% on math tests. my one criticism is that he expects you to do math quicker than you can actually do problems.
Kelly did an excellent job teaching Differential Equations. He goes really fast through the notes, but he explains concepts very well. The homework is light, and the tests and quizzes are relatively easy. After struggling to get through Calc 3 with a different professor, it's a breath of fresh air to take Diff Eq with a professor who balanced work.
The best professor I have had at UNR hands down. Calc 3 is a hard class, but Kelly makes it as easy as possible. His tests are like his practice exams and the homework is moderate. He does a weekly quiz that is meant to be bonus points since they are extremely easy. Overall, an amazing professor so any bad review is just because its a hard topic.
Though he does not take attendance, if you want a good grade you need to attend his lectures. He is really good at explaining the lesson but does go a little fast. There are quizzes and homework assignments every week but they aren't super difficult if you pay attention in class. He also lets you know of what you will be quizzed on days before.
Really really good teacher. Lots of notes but gives lots of examples
I took Calc 2 for my major credit (biochem). While the course itself was difficult, the professor wasn't. He's extremely approachable and is very willing to help. My only issue is that the homework (cengage) is 1000x more difficult than any test or quiz in class. My recommendation: take notes and then go to the math help center for the homework
Dr. Kelly was amazing! I took Calc 2 and Calc 3 with him! His course def requires that you go to class and the class moves quick. He is great at defining and explaining things, amazing at drawing visual representations, and overall amazing!
Weekly homework assignments and quiz, the occasional discussion board, and 4 exams (one of them being a cumulative final). This course is shorter than the typical 16 weeks, and is intense at the beginning with amount of lessons. But it slows down after the first exam. He has video lectures which are nice (but I used outside lectures primarily).
Kelly is one of the better Calc 3 professors imo. He is extremely approachable and super detailed in his work. Goes over the theorem/approach then does example problems which are very similar to the HW problems + quiz problems. Calc 3 is hard no matter who you take it with, but Calc 2 was harder and Kelly made this class manageable.
Fantastic Prof. All lectures were posted online & were super easy to understand. Hw per chapter, 1 quiz per week, some discussions, and 3 exams &1 comprehensive final exams, exams were proctored. Be sure to always stay on top of the lectures, they will be your best friend. Also communicate with him if you have a problem too, he always replied fast.
Kelly is really good option if you are only able to take the class online. You will need to stay on top of assignments, and the first exam had about 13 topics to learn. 3 exams + cumulative final, with them getting harder per exam. Kelly is fast at responding. Final is curved, 5% EC to final if you do a LockDown practice exam.
Calc 3 is a pretty hard class, not as hard as Calc 2 but it definitely is up there. Lectures were pre-recorded and were all posted beforehand. Dr. Kelly does the theory first, and then a couple of exams. I don't really do well with theories, so I would recommend going to office hours as soon as you start falling behind. Stay on top of your work.
Professor Kelly teaches a tough subject, but if you put in the work you'll learn a lot. It starts off easy and then takes a pretty big jump to difficult. Just stay on top of your homework and take good notes. If you complete the study guide and are able to understand all of it you should be set for the exams.
Kelly is past his prime, seems like he cares less about his students now. Tried to reach out to him for help a couple of times, always got cold answers and none of it was actually helpful. Course felt rushed, especially the last two weeks. I would not take his class again.
I heard alot of good things about kelly unfortunately none of them d to be true. He was an awful lecturer consistently he would
I heard alot of good things about kelly unfortunately none of it seems to be true. He consistently would get mad at the class for not knowing things and would say it was common sense. His lectures were so fast you took no information in and then he would say we were behind. Not only that but his grading on exams wasnt clear. I wouldnt recomend
Professor Kelly is a great teacher. Attendance is absolutely mandatory to pass (and he makes this VERY clear). Yes, he's a fast lecturer, but he gives you “skeletal notes” after the first few weeks. If you can do the practice test, don't stress; the exam was always easier. He also tells you what will be on quizzes in class days before.
Extremely difficult course if you don't put in the work. Put in the work and the effort and you can get a good grade. Be consistent and stay on top of lectures and homework and try not to deviate. His prerecorded lectures are quite good. Understand the homework and quizzes and make sure you understand the practice exam and you'll be good.
Lectures go very quick but can learn with homework problems. Tests are 100% fair and doable with the study guide. Pretty good teacher who knows his stuff
I thought Kelly explained things very well in his lectures, and as long as you go to class and pay attention, you'll be fine. It is a lot of material so the class can be quick at times, but if you ask questions, he is very good at answering. Usually a quiz at the end of each week/every 2 weeks.
Lectures are very fast but super thorough and he goes over a lot of examples which is nice. One homework and quiz every week and 3 midterms.
Too much content in too little time, if you can't memorize something from doing it for a couple hours don't expect to pass this class. The homework is heavy and if you can memorize concepts then you should be fine, Exams are worth most the grade so if you aren't a great test taker avoid at all cost.
Great professor, provides tons of examples but moves quickly through lectures. Showing up to class matters, but if you do all the homework thoroughly and get through the practice exams you'll do well.
Kelly is a pretty decent professor, but one thing to keep in mind is that, you have to write a lot into his lectures and his skeletal notes were only given only after the first exam. His exams is also you expect from the lectures/quizzes. Also get ready to draw a lot of 3D graphing! One thing, I don't like is that he writes pretty fast.
