He was an awesome prof and a great guy. Let us out of class early most days, but made sure we covered everything in the time before. His tests and assignments were all fair and if you studied, you could do very well.
great prof
class content is not very interesting. Umut tries to keep it going by cutting class early and will reference his university years randomly during lectures. His marking is little bit hard though on midterms.
Funny and intelligent
One of the best in the faculty of Economics at U of M. Great sense of humor. Very fair.
Very Funny and Entertaining
Cool guy
Great prof! He makes a dry subject interesting. Great sense of humour. Super helpful. His accent is also very easy to understand.
Not enthusiastic at all and rushed through the notes, and made for a very boring class.
Super chill guy. However, some people might not like how mellow his personality and class pace is. Apart from that, he is hilarious, often let's class out early and is meticulous in his explanations. My favourite prof so far!
Likely the best prof I've had at U of M so far.
He lets his class out early most of the time, there's times where he can't since he needs to cover certain parts of a ch. I thought his explanations were clear and pretty helpful. He's pretty chill and wants his students to do well, as long as you put in the effort I think you'll do well. I thought the class wasn't hard and recommend to try him.
Great professor and a really cool guy. He wants you to succeed and if you put in the effort, you will. I highly recommend taking a course with him.
hes very responsible instructor. a little accent but its okay when you get used to it. midterms are fair enough and assignments have unlimited attempts which is fantastic!!!
Excellent prof. Little effort after class is required to pursue a high score. A good sense of humor.
A very cute econ teacher and he is good at teaching econ 1010.
Best prof I've had in university. Great notes and explanations!
He's an awesome prof, he actually cares for his students and their academic progress. Extremely clear and concise explanations and good examples to go with them. He rocks a sweet pony-tail and I rue the day he cuts it.
The only class I enjoyed going to in first year. He sounds like he sincerely cares for his students and wants them to succeed. He's always willing to help, and he makes his lectures pretty funny in ways you wouldn't expect.
He was such a great prof! Everyone did bad on the 2nd midterm so he added 8% to all of our marks and said if we do better on the final he'll shift weight off of that midterm and onto our final! Failed that midterm but ended up finishing with an A because of that. Always let us out early. He speaks really quietly though so you have to listen well.
Umut is a great prof. He is more than willing to take the time to help you outside of class He genuinely cares for his students Lectures are well explained, some of his powerpoint notes were hard to follow though as parts were omitted, it would have been helpful if he just cleared them off the powerpoint. Great Prof
Started out very easy, then he got really lazy and stopped putting effort into lectures and that really reflected on some students grades. Showing up to class is pointless, just read the textbook. Avoid if you can.
I never had the textbook, instead I only read his notes he provides and i did fairly well. very funny and interesting, the accent is a little thick but not too bad, overall good prof
he's a great prof and I would take him again. Lecture notes are detailed and repeat the textbook. He does a lot of questions from the textbook and explains them clearly.
1. There is no way to properly practice for any of his exams. 2. The labs you do only teach definitions and graphs, which he rarely asks about on the exams. 3. Also your only way to properly practice is the questions at the end of each textbook, but its funny how they have no answers so you won't know if your doing it wrong...
Hard to understand at times due to his accent, but he's aware of this so he speaks as clearly as he can. Easy tests, overall a great course.
Really struggled to find a good way to study for the midterms and final, as the online assignments were quite different from the exams. As a teacher he's funny, good at explaining and tries hard to be clear through his accent
Attendance not mandatory because he doesn't teach what's necessary in class. He only goes over what you need to know for the exams when you ask for it. Thank goodness content is easy, but boring if you're not interested. Pretty funny and has a nice ponytail.
Great professor! He used a bit of humour to keep the class interesting. Attendance may not be necessary but I attended every class anyways. Textbook is not needed, but it helped to clear a couple things up for me. Second midterm was difficult compared to 1st midterm and final. Would definitely take this prof again!
He is a great professor! Lectures are good and the slides are well prepared. Keeps the lectures interesting with some hilarious comments. Wants the class to be absolutely quit while lectures, you might wanna keep your phone and mouth in silent mode. Text reading helps.
His accent is very thick so it might be hard to get used to. But once you get used to it, his lecture is pretty funny. He is very nice and beware of the second midterm, it is always hard.
His accent is a little strong for the first week until you get used to it. Class itself was easy as hell, all you need to do is read graphs and know what they mean. Everything is Multiple Choice and he even changed the marking scheme to help everyone get the best possible marks at the end. The content itself was very dry though.
Although he is a nice prof, and funny too, he not very good at explaining economic concepts in an easy manner. I had to read the textbook and google the topics to understand. However, his marking system is great- he gives you the best possible marks out of a few marking options he has. Not bad, but if you can get Wainikka, go for it.
Good prof, is very funny, everything in his class was multiple choice. Very easy class, he goes straight out of the textbook. Midterm and final were fairly easy. He gives the slides but there are some blanks and it is beneficial to show up to class.
A super lazy prof but the class is so easy. All the slides are given highlight them in a different color when you download them and you'll never have to write anything in his class except for a few graphs and examples. He's pretty funny and he also tries to give you the benefit of the doubt on all exams.
Really good teacher. His accent's a little hard to understand but other than that, he's pretty good. He states what to expect for tests and his notes are clear.
A little bit of a thick accent, but he's aware of it so he repeated anything that may have been misunderstood because of it. Overall fantastic prof
his accent makes things hard to understand and he doesn't put a lot of effort into his lectures. Be prepared to teach yourself.
First, what he taught in class wasn't complete compared with the content of the exam. Second and the most important during the Strike started from NOV 1 till now, he is the only prof didn't show up of all the profs teaching ECON 1010. This is so bad !!! If i can give him a 0 mark, i will!!!
Course content is not overly complicated and is an easy A. However, his accent takes some getting used to. Note, he is understanding of it. Lastly, Mid-terms were nothing like any of the assignments or review questions gone over in class.
Not an engaging prof, primarily reads off slides; hard to stay awake. If he's without a microphone sit in the front-he's quiet and a little difficult to understand. I solely relied on the textbook for this course-where he gets all testable material. Straightforward assessments and fair marking. Study and it's an easy A.
The assignments in this class are easy, and the midterm has none of the same content. He tells you what will be on the midterms, so it's not too hard to get an A. You have to read the textbook to get a good grasp of everything, and the textbook is really expensive (200$)
Was a relaxing/laid back, yet serious experience. Material was presented very well and lectures were not boring. The slight accent caused a small bit of confusion to what was being said at times, but it was not a major deterrent. Very related and always willing to help. Would normally let classes out a little early if the opportunity was there.
Would definitely take his class again. Very good environment during the lectures and always willing to help anyone with a question.
Explained things very well, and made lectures fun with great sense of humour and engaging teaching style. Very funny guy, and great prof, definitely would recommend!
Read the textbook. One thing I disliked about him was the midterm. There were 20 questions worth 20% of your final grade. Therefore, each question wrong was 1% gone from your final grade. Wish there were more questions and more time giving you some leeway if you make a small mistake.
Worst experience. NOT clear at all. hard grader. He will not give you any feedback on your exams. He gives exams totally different from class lectures. It is a basic economic course which he made so hard for students. I regret taking this course with him.
Has an accent. Funny. Willing to help. Responds to emails.
Great prof, clearly explains everything during the lectures and the jokes he tells combined with his accent make the class that much better.
I struggled at the beginning of the class and thought I would not do well, but he was so helpful in getting me back to full understanding. I came almost every week out of office hours and he would still help me. If your not doing well its not him, just try reading the textbook when something is unclear.
prof Umut is a very nice prof. his exams are pretty easy if you go to class and study, not hard at all.
he doesn't explain during his lectures or rather explains things in a harder way. I read the book every day rather than reading his lectures because they don't make sense. assignments are a bit confusing.
Emphasized what we needed for the exam and did practice problems to make sure we understood. I would recommend going to class, he tells you what you should focus on to study and had fill-in-the-blank style notes. Only tested on material from the notes but gave us readings to help us understand. Goes over midterm exams. Would highly recommend!
took his class because he had amazing reviews, but midterms did not follow class material, confusing questions and wording, relied heavily on textbook as he says only read over lecture notes, but lecture notes are very slim and don't go into great detail. does in class questions, but rarely writes anything down so hard to follow and understand
Solid option
Overall one of the best professors Ive had at U of M. Really love his teaching style and he always lets you know what will be on the final and what wont be so you dont waste mindless hours reading through a boring textbook. Recommend this prof for ECON 1010 and ECON1020, had him for both.
Super great prof and reasonable with grading. Lectures are entertaining, he's pretty funny. Uses lots of examples in lecture which really helps with the material.
I found his lectures to be unnecessary, so I eventually stopped going to some classes and just learning from the textbook because all of his class slides were pretty much just straight from the textbook but with less explanations and details. I ended up dropping the class because I was doing terrible, even though I was putting a lot of effort into.
Prof. Oguzoglu was very good, he explained concepts well and did lots of practice questions in class. Hes very accessible through email. He does have an accent and is quiet, so sit in the first few rows of the lecture. To do well in his class: go to lectures, take notes, do practice problems, and read the textbook and you will do fine.
Umut is a great prof and one of the most caring professors I've had, very passionate about his work, and is very funny during his lectures. His lectures and notes help out a lot and give insight but it is still useful to take a peek at the textbook. Make sure you draw what he draws on screen, and seek help if you are confused. Would recommend.
this class was way harder than it had to be. Awful lectures and tons of online assignments (which are easy) however they do not prepare you for the midterms or final at all. wish I took it online.
He seems like a nice guy but hes just not a great prof. His lecture notes are straight from the textbook and I find he rambles on about nothing. I didnt even know what half the units were about until I read the textbook. Ive never worked harder in a class and I still didnt get a great grade. I would try to avoid having him as a prof.
Prof. Oguzoglu is nothing but decent. He will certainly try and help you if you have questions, but other than that, he won't bend over backwards for you. Lectures can be hard to follow, but the textbook usually clears it up. His tests are also fairly easy.
A decent prof. Notes are straight forward but u need to come to class to fill out the slides. Tests are easy and he does review back on the test so u can know what u did wrong. He let u take back your test and i recommend u do because he does repeat some of the questions from midterm in the final.
His lectures are useful for going through practice problems, but other than that, his notes are straight from the textbook and I generally made my own notes from the textbook and did just fine in the course.
Supper funny prof that makes lectures interesting. Gives good examples in class and goes through the content. As long as you go to class and do the online assignments you should be fine in his class.
He was a very average prof. He wasn't the best at explaining things, he would just say "this is what you do" or whatever with no explanation as to why. However, if you contact him he is very kind and willing to help. I also found him quite funny during lectures which was nice for an 8:30 class. Tries to make exams too hard or confusing sometimes.
Difficult course but Umut makes lectures entertaining. Gives help outside of class and always goes over many examples in class.
Well to start I would say that class is mandatory but since umut has cancelled 5 of the last 8 lectures for no reason its clearly not. His recent excuse for cancelling the next 2classes is that he posted a 25 min video which is somehow sufficient for 100mins. He clearly wanted a strike and has taken matters into his own hands by not doing his job
Good prof. It's definitely good to attend his lectures, he's pretty good at explaining the topic in simple terms. Not attending lectures will leave you reading the textbook which isn't fun. Tests weren't difficult as long as you study well enough. Very nice guy!
Took microeconomics a few years ago with him, back then the course was straightforward (though it takes a decent amount of time). If you study a reasonable amount for the exams you should be fine.
This Professor is a nightmare he does not give enough time for you to finish the midterms or final. When we asked for more time he blames the students because he believes that we should have asked him more questions in class even though the assignments were easy. Even in Covid he will delete example videos and does not record lectures.
Awful! Avoid at all costs. Worst prof I've ever had. He blamed his students for not studying hard enough to meet his standards, while the midterm average of 52% should indicate that his tests ARE the problem. Thinks that every student cheats so makes up his own tests & makes the test so short of time so you have no way of cheating. So ridiculous.
Umut is a very nice prof, although his tests don't always coincide with the assignments on Sapling. Make sure you go through his lecture slides and fill them in because he takes a lot of test questions directly from there (esp. graphs and definitions). Do the Learning Curve and practice problems and you should do fine.
Explains things well if you ask questions. Lectures are a little boring but hes actually pretty funny. Midterms were tough but if you study and do the assignments you'll be fine. Also the assignments are a free 10%.
Great prof.
nice and funny prof, makes 8:30am classes enjoyable! cares for his students, so please go to his office hours if you need help. he gives advice and makes an effort to clear misunderstandings with the material before exams. note: does require you to fill in lecture notes in lecture. if you stay active in lectures, you'll do well in the course.
He's funny, kind, and helpful, I struggled a little bit with his teaching style but it seemed like most people didn't. Luckily it was an easy course so going over stuff myself wasn't hard.
prof was okay. lectures are a bit boring. some slides were messed up and I found having to read the textbook right after lectures to understand the material better which was time consuming as he doesn't have much examples.
Umut has quite a soft voice, so sitting near the front is a good idea. Lectures can be dry at times, but the information he gives in his lectures is what is on the exams, so there are very little surprises. The topics he covers arent particularly difficult, but you must stay up to date on assignments and exams or you could quickly fall behind.
Umut is a fun prof especially for an 8:30 lecture. He keeps the class awake with his witty remarks, but would recommend taking up the front seats cause the classes are very lecture heavy. Textbook is mandatory, you'd end up using it for assignments and practise.
I found him to be friendly and enthusiastic, but I didn't feel that his approach as an instructor was particularly effective for my learning style. The material could have been presented in a clearer or more engaging way.
I did not enjoy Umut. He was dry in teaching style, and made macroeconomics harder than it needed to be. The three midterms were unnecessary, especially having the third one only five days before the final...who does that!? Also, the expensive Macmillan textbook was barely used. I did not feel supported, and the overall experience was negative.
As funny as he was, he's a bit too quiet and hard to understand at times. He won't post completed slides, so either attend every class or use the textbook to fill you in. 3 midterms is a bit excessive, and I dislike having the buy a whole textbook JUST to access practice questions. His grading scale is great though, rigged for you to pass easily.
People are roasting Mr. Umut but I think what y'all don't do is ask him questions after class! During his lecture it's hard to hear him speak as he mumbles- so if you disassociate you will miss important information as I found that most of the key words he puts in the midterms are what he says in class. overall, grading scheme is great for easy A.
Umut is a decent professor who genuinely tries to teach well. He's kind but often super quiet and a bit hard to follow unless you sit near the front. The slides uploaded miss key info, so attending class matters but is not mandatory. The three difficult midterms felt unnecessary, especially the last one scheduled five days before the final.
Great professor for intro class, makes the grading criteria clear and weighs the midterms to benefit students. Makes funny jokes that keep lectures entertaining. If you are unclear about anything in his class go and talk to him, he is open to help students better understand material.
Umut was my favourite professor this term. He's funny and enjoys Gen Z. Also works out so he's a great inspiration to stay fit even with a 'desk job'. He is supportive and very responsive to student emails -- gives coach vibes which I loved. Don't rush the homework. Review provided midterm copies thoroughly before final exam. Pencil > pen.
Fine looking professor who's extremely knowledgeable in economics. His grading system is very fair. You'll need to show up to all classes to fill in the blank notes since he doesn't post full slides, otherwise you can just read the textbook which you'll need to purchase in order to complete assignments on achieve which is worth 10%.
Can't say I like or dislike, favour or hate the guy. He is alright. Will say though that like many of the reviews say, his grading system is fair and favours the student. That said, the three midterms, was overkill and totally unnecessary.
Grading system and all midterms + exam being multiple choice is super student-friendly. Must attend for lecture notes, but lectures are enojyable with his sense of humour. All notes are taken from the textbook though, so attendance isn't a must.
