Really nice lady, wastes a lot of class time to work on group paper which is worth as much as the final. Also all test are online execpt the final which must be taken in testing center.
Be prepared. Read text assigned before class. Urminda is very funny! I highly recommend her as a teacher for psychology.
She is very tough and you will need to put forth a lot of work for this class. Mrs. Firlan has a great sense of humor and she is a great teacher. I highly recommend her, she cares highly about all her students (academically and outside of school.)
Best PSYCH professor I have ever had. She seems hard at first, but she is not at all.
SINCE WHEN DO YOU NEED TO WRITE AN ENGLISH PAPER IN PHY? IF I WANTED TO BE TAUGHT ABOUT RESEARCH PAPERS I WOULD HAVE TAKEN ENG 160
A very fair professor. Not too hard or too easy. Instructions and expectations were always clear. Her class requires a lot of student involvement in lectures, and group work. Not my cup of tea, but I ended up having a great time in the class. My most highly recommended instructor at KVCC.
THE BEST PROFESSER I HAVE EVER HAD!!!! She is extreamly fair and clear in her teaching! She is very understanding of your life outside of class. She is also very funny!
Awful, awful teacher. Avoid at all costs!
Really enjoyed this class. the teacher was extremely helpful, bt she has a hearing imparement so she has to look at you when you talk.
Found that Dr. Firlan was an awesome teacher. Nothing but positive things to say. I would highly recommend her for this class; you'll learn a lot and have a blast doing it. Good luck!
I have taken other psychology classes before and I found this instructor to make the class unnecessarily difficult and time consuming. She has a PhD and she wants you to know it. There are other classes you can take that teach the same thing with HALF the work she requires. I advise to avoid.
I like this teacher. she is willing to help if you are willing to take the time to learn. this class is not an easy 4.0 class but if you work hard and take good notes which you can use with your book on all online tests, you will do great. enjoy and have fun learning with her
passionate, funny, keeps you interested, and helpful.
such a great teacher! truly cares about her students. you will do well if you put forth effort, 2 big projects but she grades fairly
Great teacher. Very funny and lots of group work. Keeps you interested and you can relate what you learn to everyday life.A couple of presentations (so avoid if you don't like public speaking). She's strict with grades but very fair and always willing to help. Highly recommend!
Very helpful instructor, funny and keeps class interesting with lots of group discussions during class, lectures went by very fast!
One of the best teachers I've ever had. So much fun and such an easy class with her. Wish I could take every class with her.
She is so nice, and makes class interesting! I would recommend her class.
The class was not too tough and she is always willing to answer questions. The tests were pretty hard.. But she allowed us to use notes on them which helped. I thought she was a decent professor and she definitely knows what she is doing.
She is really good at explaining what she means and makes sure you understand.
She has an amazing personality. She understands the stress that college students undergo. If you understand her way of thinking, the only hard part of the class will be the amount of reading.
AMAZING TEACHER! I loved her class. She is super funny and adds great stories about the lives we all live. She is super interesting. Would love to have her again. Thanks for the great semester!
I for one, struggle on her test and I'm normally an A student and in early college. When she lectures, preprint the slides and take notes on what she SPEAKS. I loved the material, I apply it to my life. But I only got a 3.0 in her class. Do the Literature Notebook Review, rough and final draft. Or you will suffer the consequences.
Only needed a 90 percent to get an A, and all the tests are open book multiple choice. Very easy to pass this class, simply skim the chapters, and be ready to bring knowledgeable participation to class and she will be more than willing to help you.
THE BEST PROF IVE EVER HAD!!! She is so kind and willing to help. She treats students like equal people and realizes that you have lives outside of class. She's funny and makes class interesting. She's so good I LOVED my 3 hour night class :) YOU WONT REGRET TAKING HER CLASS!!! WONDERFUL PERSON AND PROFESSOR
Read the syllabus before you start!! She is a fantastic instructor and she definitely has a passion for her job. Lots of discussion forum posts and you need to use scholarly articles and minimum a word count! Tests are open book and not timed!! Great class!! (I ordered an older edition of the book for much cheaper and it worked just fine!!)
Love her taking her again
As a person, Urminda is pretty cool and she's not a bad teacher. Except when it comes to the TWO projects she has you doing side by side. Which have almost no guidelines and she doesn't answer questions directly. Also you should learn APA before taking her PSY 150 because she won't show you how to do title pages, quotes, or references.
Professor Firlan was one of the most down-to-earth professors I have ever had. She is very funny and helpful, really cares about her students. She makes learning the subject interesting and I never woke up dreading going to her class. I wish I had more psychology classes to take, as I would choose her every time.
Urminda is a great teacher, don't get me wrong. I learned a lot in her class . However, she assigns two very large projects right off the bat. If you are not willing to put in several hours and days of work for these projects, I recommend you do not take this course. Her tests are online, and are pretty easy, as long as you take notes.
She is a great professor! Try not to skip class because you will miss a lot of information. Also, do not wait until the last minute to do your projects. She is very fair and will do what she can to help you pass.
shes awful. taking her class was a mistake. she assigns two projects side by side with vague instruction and little guidlines. she doesnt directly answer questions and abuses her power as a teacher. she wants students to "figure things out for themselves" all the notes and tests are online! she has a PhD and is worthless to the class. do not take!
Professor Firlan does assign 2 lengthy projects right off the bat, but all due dates pertaining to both projects are given in the syllabus from the get go as well... you're simply required to budget your time wisely; if you do, you will do well on both. She is a great professor in my opinion! Relates every subject to real life and is very humorous!
Yes, she does give two pretty big projects right off the bat, but she gives plenty of time and information to be able to complete them. I suffer from anxiety and she met with me after class to talk and helped me quite a bit. She's there for you and she's passionate about teaching.
I would not recommend her to anyone
Urminda is great. I took Child Psychology online. She encourages you to contact her if you have any questions or concerns. She really wants her students to succeed, but she also wants you to put in the time and effort. Weekly work and discussions, Unit tests, cumulative final.
She starts off the semester with two major projects which are due right on top of each other All her test are open note/book/internet but don't always cover the topic her power points and assigned readings do. took one test that was suppose to be about the brain and stress and the first half was about the reproductive system. Would not take again!
I took this class because I heard she was a great teacher. I was not disappointed! She is amazing!!! She can be a little difficult with her grading, but she tells you exactly what she wants.
Well I have to be honest! If you have any type of learning disability or have special needs I would highly not recommend you to take her class. She teaches the class at a 4.0 level and the tests never ever match to what she talks about during class. Oh and also the students in her class are very rude.
She definitely makes you work for it, but if your responsible enough to take things into your own hands and not just depend on her giving you all the answers, you'll do fine.
You have two huge assignments you work on the whole semester. The exams (4) except final are online open note and google. All the answers are on a website called study blue. I did not open the book once. She is deaf, so you have to be careful with talking. She is very organized and there is never any homework. You get all due dates the first day.
This was the hardest class I had ever taken. You have to put in lots of work to get a good grade. Not an easy A, but very helpful. I'm actually not interested in child psych, so I was taking it because it's required. The discussion posts were interesting, but the textbook was really boring to me. Learned a lot about research and APA formatting.
Urminda does make you work for the grade you want. All her test rely little to none on the notes taken inside the class which was the only reason I didn't like her. She definitely knows what she's talking about. The two projects she gives are time consuming and given with little instruction but if you talk to her she will help you out,
PSY190 has one big project that was difficult, but as long as you ask for help and work hard, you will do great. All tests are on moodle, if you google questions you will find almost all of the answers. Never had to use book for PSY150 or PSY190 and she does not take attendance. Powerpoints are on moodle so you don't have to take a lot of notes.
Dr. Firlan is an amazing professor! PSY150 has one big project that was difficult to fully understand and get a grasp on, but as long as you ask her for help and put effort into it, you will do great. She makes you work hard for your grade and you will leave the class with a lot more knowledge and as a better person! Highly recommend!!
She really wants her students to understand the content. I had her for intro and child psych and loved it. She believes you understand more when you do your own research and look at case studies to share with the class. Sarcastic sense of humor, doesn't put up with people's crap, but is also really understanding and cares for her students.
Urminda is amazing and really knows her stuff. She makes lectures entertaining, fun and fills them with interesting and applicable content. If you work hard and get good partners for the group project you will do amazing. Read your book and study online quizzes for the final exam.
Dr. Firlan's online class was pretty easy, considering that all of the unit tests were open-book, open-note. It took me very little time to complete the required work (writing about 500 words, in four different posts) each week. If you want to learn child psych, though, and not just get a good grade, make sure you're very self-motivated.
Its clear about what she excepts, but excepts you to know what she wants.
She is one of the worst teachers I have had at this school. She is not responsive to emails whatsoever. If you try to get in touch with her, she is often rude in her response or will try to blame you for the issue. She is unclear about things and then gets upset when you're confused.
Told the class that she didnt want to teach the stuff we would be tested on, just big-picture stuff. It was frustrating because she just taught really general stuff and nothing that expanded learning. She made all the females tell the class when they had their first period. Dont take her if you want to actually learn.
Her lectures do not correspond to the tests so studying is impossible. If you ask for help or clarification she will respond with a very nasty email. I took her child psychology class and I opened the book once. She is very unprofessional-asks class personal info, messages back very late, and recruits students to work at her clinic. Bad Professor
Makes lectures fun and interactive. If you put in the work you will be just fine.
Dr. Firlan taught this class different than any class Ive taken. We were given chapters and had to make a PowerPoint and present the information to the class. It made us know and understand the material and made it fun too. She would give feedback on how we did and how to improve our presentation and how we taught the information.
There's quite a few tests and group projects. If you have reviewed the presentations and read through the textbook, you'll do fine. She is very open when it comes to clarifying any questions you have. Please be opened minded when it comes to taking this class. Even though she is a tough professor at some points, she wants her students to succeed.
she's the worst prof I've had and not understanding whatever NEVER take any courses taught by her
JUST DON'T DO IT! Worst profess.
I was so excited to take Psych, but this has been so disappointing. I had no grades 8 weeks into my semester. I had reached multiple times, in different ways with no responses. Totally online, but no lectures, no communication. I was so alone in this class, and my classmates felt the same. I was really disappointed that I spent my money on this.
I agree with the previous poster about this lady, she is not good at all. I finally received my grades half-way through the semester, it's difficult to get a hold of her and when she returns messages she can be quite condescending and rude. Do yourself a favor and choose anyone else. I thought this would be fun but it's really stressful.
Tests on large amounts of information without any sort of guide or hint as to what will be on the test. No feedback what so ever. Refuses to answer student emails and if she does it usually says something like, "It's on the syllabus". No lecture. 100% self taught class. She does provide a power point for each chapter but it's not helpful.
Awful. do not recommend unless you enjoy failing every test and crying yourself to sleep. never take this class, youll regret it. but if you do READ THE SYLLABUS because thats what shes going to tell you to do if you ever try to get in contact with her, and thats if she replies. dont ever expect to know your grade, she never updates.
SHE IS HORRIBLE! SHE DOES NOT TEST FROM THE BOOK OR POWERPOINTS. SHE PULLS MOST OUT OF TESTBANKS AND ITS RANDOM. SHE WILL PICK ONE DEFINITION OF ONE THING AND IT WONT BE CORRECT ON THE TEST FROM WHAT THE BOOK SAYS. I HAVE VERBLIZED IT TO HER AND SHE SAYS TO BE OPEN AND THINK ABOUT THE QUESTION GIVEN.
AWFUL. This is a teach your self class. There is no guidance. Any question you have she will not answer it and will say read the syllabus. Very rude responses if she even responds. Do not take this class with her unless you feel like teaching yourself.
I took Introductory Psychology with Professor Firlan online because of Covid. Urminda was not clear on what we would be tested on. Sometimes questions came from the textbook, other times they came from her vague slideshows she posted. No lectures, only slideshows with vague, sometimes no, definitions. Not relatable. DO NOT take her class online.
I wouldn't recommend her at all unless you're willing to teach yourself all year. She has no office hours, is rarely responsive to emails, and when she does respond, it's rude.
She has poor communication, rude disrespectful replies. I recommend her some classes on how to deal with students respectfully as well as therapy. As a teacher, you have to have patience and push your students to succeed not just holding their mistakes against them. Her class was the most stressful class ever. Students R leaving kvcc coz of her.
No lecture videos, slides are filled with a lot of nothing, and little to no explanation about what is expected from assignments. She is rude and condescending when reached out to. She wants pay without doing the work. Why pay for this class when I could just teach myself like I did anyways? She is a waste of money, time, and college resources.
Was unwilling to compromise about anything especially as a student athlete. Extremely rude and condescending when responding to emails.
"Everything is in the book and syllabus". Only assignments were exams/tests and learning summaries. I wouldn't take her again, but the content was manageable.
I do not recommend this course with this professor. I told my advisor what was going on and he said he has had enough complaints about her to report her, and he did. She was rude, doesn't answer emails, no lecture videos, expected to have knowledge that came from nowhere. Do not recommend.
To other high school students thinking about dual enrolling in this, it is hard!!! Professor Firlan is an amazing person, I was wary by reviews claiming she was rude, but I never experienced that she was always kind, and very funny! As far as the work, it was a lot of reading, and the tests were based on analyzing which can be difficult for some.
A very unforgiving instructor. Only time he ever acknowledged a mistake was when he discovered that none of his grading had been saved throughout the year till mid-November. Provided multiple syllabus, but the most accessible one contained errors, when pointed out he only said not to use that one. No study guides and long reading assignments.
Professor Firlan's Psychology 150 class lacked effective teaching. Strict policies stifled seeking help, with unhelpful responses to inquiries. Overall, disappointing support and engagement. Caution advised for future students.
Amazing professor I would highly recommend taking her class! She is very happy to help you and she will explain things to you so you can get a better understanding of the subject. Very kind and respectful always willing to help you out!
Accountability is an all around idea that impacts every aspect of our lives. I considered dropping the course, but after communicating my concerns and owning my own inconsistencies. I had the opportunity to break the cycle of excuse making. Instead of blaming, I self reflected and adjusted. This is a new tool I will use throughout my life.
I am thinking the beginning of the class is PSY 150 and now we are at the end of it. I can not believe how valuable time it was. This happened with your teaching style my dear Professor Firlan. At the end of the class I have significant details of the Psychology so I feel having the best choice to have this class.
When taking her online class, it's easy to assume that she's at the very least strict. However, throughout the class, she showed extreme interest in making sure we succeeded as students. On top of this, the specificity of her grading paired with the clearness or the guidelines, the work can seem daunting, but helps to set the standard.
do not tale this class or any class with her. Tried to reachout for help she said its in the syllabus then nvr responded to me again. I ended up failing my first two test and droped the class
-she is very rude and condescending when responding -she cares more about scholar articles than teaching -she talks about her personal life a lot that "relates" to what we are talking about but just ends up talking about herself which isn't helpful on the quizzes & tests when all we have is her personal stories and slides with little information
Dr. Firlan can come off as abrasive or harsh but is not. This course requires independent study work. You can't memorize and regurgitate the information to pass. You must be willing to put the work in and invest in your own success as well as be accountable for your own time, study habits, and work completion.
This was my first college course in years. I started out overwhelmed and left a very confident student. She is strict but fair and shows she deeply cares for her student's successes! If you have the option to sit in on a blended class (I took the online course) do so. This helped me tremendously. I will seek her out as a professor in the future.
I appreciated that we were given readings, powerpoints, and video recordings of her in person lectures to help us learn the materials in a completely online class. She wants to see her students succeed and offered opportunities for us to do so. Even though I don't need any more psychology courses, I want to just to have her as a professor again.
Professor Firlan is an amazing instructor. Though some people have complained about her strict submission and grading policy, her reasoning justifies it. She is essentially instilling diligence into her students through her policy, which I believe proves she cares about her students (whether they like her methodology or not). 10/10.
If you do all the work and tests and communicate with the teacher you will be okay in the class. Make sure you put a lot of time into the final project because it is most of your grade.
I love that Abnormal Psych is so oriented toward the DSM. The course material will be relevant to any professionals in psych related fields for years to come. Prof Firlan wants students to learn the material and succeed! I found the class extremely straightforward with no surprises.
She is a great professor who genuinely cares how her students do. Many drop her classes early on because of her tough style referenced in the rubric... Dr. Firlan is very understanding, empathetic, and strategic. I would take another class with her in a heartbeat.
Dr. Firlan is extremely knowledgeable and experienced in the field of phycology. Her lectures are very entertaining and informative. However, I would suggest taking notes before class because she doesn't get to all the core content during her lectures which can be difficult if you don't put in extra work.
I really enjoyed this class, and I highly recommend this professor to anyone considering taking her. The lectures were always interesting, and the tests were very manageable as long as you study. She gives plenty of chances for students to succeed, and she's very clear about what to expect at every step. I would take another class with her again.
Not much homework and she lets you use note and books on test the only thing I can complain about is the policy for late work overall not a hard class.
If students carefully read and follow her syllabus they are set up for success in her class She provides several opportunities to make up work She is also very responsive and communicates quickly when students have questions. Her willingness to help and clear expectations create a supportive learning experience overall I loved this class!
She is an amazing professor. It may seem like a lot at first but she really wants what is best for her students so if you put the work in you will do great. You really just have to pay attention to the syllabus because all of the information for the whole semester is in there. You really get out what you put into the class.
Psychology has become one of my favorite subjects, changing how I think about myself, others, and everyday situations. Topics like cognitive biases, development, and conditioning made me more mindful, patient, and self-aware, and helped me see the deeper research behind human behavior. Through the semester, I was learning more about myself.
Dr. Urminda Firlan is an amazing teacher and though she may have high expectations of students she is very accommodating and it is clear she prioritizes helping students meet the standard rather than keeping the standard itself. Furthermore, she makes it very clear what is expected of you for each assignment and test in the syllabus. Very clear.
