ABSOLUTE BEST English teacher this school has! To be quite honest, I'm a little surprised a higher university hasn't picked her up... She's extremely fair. Not easy - but not hard. VERY funny and she's the only reason I kept my 7:30am English class. She is not your stereotypical hard nosed English teacher. Extremely down to earth. You will LOVE her!
LOVES busy work - gives far too much homework (seems to love the exercises in the book alot). Wish she would give us feedback on our papers before expecting a finished product. Peers just don't cut it - that's why we're in that class... because we're not experts just yet. Not very classy and at times, not even professional but definitely funny.
Not hard at all! Easy class to pass! Not a strict grader on papers! Gives homework just to keep you busy but worth a lot! Her quizzes are easy too the answers are in the questions! Her paper are wayyyyy shorter than other professors! All in all one of the easiest english classes at polk!
Very Strict, on point, and demanding. If youre a minute late for class, expect to get chewed out. If she asks a question, and you dont answer, she says she is not there to waste her time and she has much better things to do besides be there to teach. Other than that, if your on TOP of your game, she can be a really nice instructor.
The worst professor! Always has a smart comment to add. Can't ever be late or get a zero on an asignment. Simply stay away from her
THE BEST PROF at PSC! I HATE writing but she goes slow and makes it FUNNY! Will help if you ask. And you can redo bad papers. She gives a lotta work but papers are short. She's strict w being late but in my class the SAME people were ALWAYS late. She's younger & good looking but knows what she's doing. I'm taking her for 1102. A+ prof.
Good teacher. Make sure you doyour work!! Strict policy on being late. Maybe like 5 papers in total for the class, but not hard at all. I would reccomend her and i am taking her for ENC 1102.
Very strict, but if you show up on time and get your work turned in she's not bad and I got a fairly easy A.
SHE IS HORRIBLE.
Very personable, but pretty strict on the work she accepted and attendance. Classes were always interesting, because discussion is the main point of this class. Overall, one of my favorite professors because she knows what she's doing.
Great profesor
Great teacher!!! But she does have a bit of an attitude. Her classes were always interesting and I was always happy to go to class
Had her for the summer.she is a great teacher but she makes the work harder then it needs to be. She will not let you in if you are late so be on time and prepared to work.
She is very strict. If you are one minute late to class she will not let you in. She is one of the toughest graders. My class average was a 58, and trust me it wasn't the students. Stay away from her!!
I'm currently taking her class its hard. She tries to break everything down but in the end its still hard.Cant be late to class!! and her grading is very strick. If this is your ideal professor go for it, if not stay away!!!
Not an easy class, but if you show up on time and complete assignments you will learn something.
Very funny very interesting viewpoint on life even if this is done intentionally she is trying to teach you to expand your mind on things even if it is wild and questionable its ok to ask questions ultimately the personality of the class determines your satisfaction so be an interested student as well to get the best out of her
An instructor that will challenge you, in an effort to bring out the best in you. Very professional, a true scholar at heart. Cares a great deal for her students.
She's hard.. Stay away from her. This is not a easy class.
She is a worthless person that think she knows it all. All I can say is.. She has a nice body... :D
She's very strict and demands a lot from her students. But she's a great professor. She really does a great job in teaching her students about argumentative writing. The only "unfair" part of her class is her no tolerance for being tardy to class.
She is a poor educator. I dropped her class in the summer, not because of my grade. I dropped the class, because of her shockingly poor attitude in the classroom. I learned a lesson about utilizing ratemyprofessors from this woman though.
Not a good professor at all
She is a great professor! If I would have known how to fix my MLA format sooner, I would have gotten an A. Her instructions are clear, but she is strict when it comes to tardiness and plagiarism (duh). She has an awesome personality, and a funny outlook o life. My advice: do your readings before class and participate in discussions.
This professor had a breakdown in class and yelled at a student for texting in the back with the ringer off. She smashed the phone and the whole class got quiet. I really dont know what is wrong with her :-/
Atkins is extremely educated. She is a harsh grader and expects you to write on a professor level v/s student level. She will ask u to leave class if you are 1 minute late and request that you leave class if you do not have full pages of work done. She can be a good teacher if she is in a good mood.
Absolute worst life decision I've ever made. Knowledgeable professor intelligent but way of teaching and guiding as an instructor need some help in that area need to change attitude towards students just a bit I promise if this change is made students will flock to this instructor
Not so nice very sarcastic in a not so nice way
She is great while in class just never be late or you'll not be let in to class keep good attendance and check your email. Other than that she is very strict in typing papers and having them in on time especially rough drafts and final drafts.Funny and outgoing just don't piss her off.
Awesome professor!!! If you are willing to work very hard and show-up everyday on time, she will bring out the hidden writer in you. I would recommend her to a person who is serious about learning. No immature children, please-you will regret it.
Pro. Atkins is a very tough professor however she in the best English teacher I have ever had. Every paper that is due she goes into depth on what she wants and helps you out if you need it. She grades hard but it only makes you better. If your willing to work hard and ALWAYS BE ONTIME, I recommend you take it. You'll learn alot and have fun.
if you have no interest in english and is just trying to pass since it is mandatory, this is not the professor for you, try someone else
I took her comp II class during the summer and OMG!! This woman is too strict!! She really should be teaching at UF in the MASTERS program!! She grades VERY HARD(she uses a ruler)PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM HER!!!!
She won't let you in class if you are more than 1 second late. She is a harsh grader and expects your papers to be perfect. She will not a give a 100. Ever. Don't even expect an A. If you're a good writer, expect a mid B.
You won't want to miss class. She is very professional and organized. But if you expect to get an A take someone else. Atkins grades hard on her essays, and even if the assignment maybe turned it, if it is incomplete that is a zero. But luckily she has homework that helps you maintain a C. Would of did alright if this was my only class
Professor Atkins has been one of the toughest professors I have ever had, but she is amazing. I came into this class lacking self confidence in my writing and I left feeling great. She explains all her assignments and has an open door policy for her office. DON'T BE LATE FOR CLASS! she will not let you in class if you are late so please don't do it
I absolutely loved my experience in this class. I would have loved to have had her for LIT1000. She tells you EXACTLY how to write your essays, so of course she expects you to get it right.
The reviews here are extremely low because people expect to be spoon fed an A+. It's difficult but not unreasonable. Her syllabus covers a spectrum of what you need to know to pass and she has clear grading criteria but you need to put in effort to pass. Lectures are planned and concise. Essays tests. Textbook homework/essay articles.
She's great but lateness in any aspect is bad. She will lock you out and she doesn't give A's.
If you expect an easy A, I personally recommend that you don't take this professor! Professor Atkins is an excellent professor however you have to work hard to get a good grade. The syllabus is the key to passing her class, as long as you do the work and submit the assignments on time, you will be fine! and NEVER be LATE! BE ON TIME PLEASE :)
Tough class. If you are a straight A student even this class will push you to the limit and you will most likely not get an A.
Even if you give it your best, there will always be something she does not approve.
She is an excellent professor teaching wise, but when she grades its like she expects you to be in the masters program for english. She hardly ever gives out A's. She also grades based on how she feels. Example: UF won a football game this season and everyone in class got a 95 on the paper we turned in. Every other paper I got either a C or D on.
Professor Atkins is an extremely tough professor to have for just a second level English class. Also, when I say participation matters, I mean that speaking up in class is part of your overall grade, seriously. But, show up to class on time and follow her strict guidelines for homework and papers and you might barely pass her class.
Do all your work in this class!! I did not finish one essay and did not tun it in because I know she does not give partial credit. Also, do all the homework. I did some of the homework but I did not give enough elaboration and she gave me a 0 for the homework. I would have at least gotten a C if I would have done the work.
This class is not an easy A, but if you put in the work, it is well worth it. She explains exactly how she wants each paper, so pay attention to her directions. Make sure you do all the homework because it could boost your grade. Seems intimidating at first, but probably one of my favorite professors. She helped me improve my writing skills.
Professor Atkins may seem tough but she is a really great teacher. If you actually pay attention and work on the weak spots she points out to you, you will pass. She gives tons of feedback and is somewhat of a harsh grader but if you really try you will see your writing improve a lot! And do not ever try to show up late or ask for make up work!
Professor Atkins is psycho, dont take her. She also takes forever to grade anything and get it back to you. She will give you the prompt for the essay exactly one week before so you dont have long to actually write it.
Cares for the student went out of her way to find a good, but cheep book for the class (believes education should be accessible) Has 4 major papers anywhere from 3-6 pages. She only grades hard because she wants you to be ready for the next class. Gives opportunities to buffer your grade. Do be sure to get ALL essays looked at by a tutor though!
Very strict grader. Doesn't give A's often on papers. There are easier assignments that help bring up your grade at the end of the semester (plus hw and quizzes) and essay workshops for extra credit. She goes over exactly what she wants in her essays. Will give out zeros if not formatted correctly. Interesting class. Hard to talk to about concerns.
Tough grader. You could have an essay with no comments and still get a B. Class is interesting and there are a lot of group workshops. Not very sympathetic if you are confused about an assignment or ask a question she thinks is dumb. Rare to get an A overall or on essays. There are 5 major essays, multiple reading quizzes, and a research paper.
Professor Atkins is the best English teacher I have ever had. She is a tough grader, but she tells you exactly what she expects. If you ask her for help she is willing to help. If you are willing to work for your grade she is not a bad teacher.
I did my best, but it's not good enough for her.
This is not a professor you should take if you're expecting an easy-A. You will have to work for the grade, and it's hard to satisfy her. Go to the tutors before you turn in any paper. Take any other professor for a nicer time.
She is a good professor if you like a challenge. She is a tough teacher, she will not help you if needed and there are many papers you have to write that affect your grade heavily if it is not the way she wants it.
Seriously DON'T TAKE her class! The worst professor I've ever had.
I loved professor Atkins. I took her for ENC1102 and I would take her again. She tells you exactly what she wants on all her papers. It is not an easy A, but it is not hard to pass her class. Professor Atkins is my favorite teacher at Polk State. If you ask her for help, she will help you.
Worst Class. You cannot turn in work before/after due date. Don't expect her to be understanding in any way. if you do not staple your work correctly, she won't accept it. If you are not in class exactly on time, she will not allow you to enter. Does not help outside of class at all. Less than half her class passed. An extremely stressful course.
One of the best teachers i have ever had. She treats her class like a professional work environment and requires you to stay on top of your work. However if you do you assignments and put your best effort in her class is one of the most interesting and well taught classes i have ever taken. Tough but always fair. Her class left me wanting more.
Challenging and controversial class. Must be open minded and open to discussion. Best professor if you like a challenge, if not don't take the class. Attendance: you have 3 excuses Test: Gives pop quizzes to boost grade (or fail) Homework: Yes Essays: 5 + Research essay, grammar, and essay exam at the end. Book: MUST (to annotate)
She is very hard but you will learn a lot from her class after her class you will be great for LIT.
Not a good professor, she does not clearly let you know the assignments she wants you assume from past work . She wants everything done in a certain way but never 100% clear on the way. She takes points off for unnecessary reasons and will not let you redo any assignments. Its clear she wants everything her way and does not care about the student.
Professor Atkins does not reply to emails when reaching out for help on an assignment . You have to do assignments a certain way or she will not accept it. Must be punctual to class or she will not allow you inside once her door closes. Makes assignments more complicated than they should be. More than half the class dropped the course for failing.
One of the worst human beings I have ever encountered. I absolutely love English and have always excelled in it. She isnt clear about what she wants and one simple mistake will get you a zero on the entire paper. If you have to miss a day because of an emergency (Dead grandma included) you will get an F. The devil himself wouldnt take this class.
This Professor is AWESOME!! You have to do the work in her class, but her instructions are CLEAR AND PERCISE! She responds to every email. There are a ton of papers, but she is awesome SHE WANTS HER STUDENTS TO PASS! I would recommend anyone to take her! Her goal is for her students to become GREAT WRITERS PERIOD!
I was a weak writer before I enrolled in Miss Atkins class and my first paper has the grade to show it (D) but by the end of the semester, I had improved my writing enough where I passed with a low B. Her teaching helped. But I was taken aback during a lecture where she called white students mayonnaise crackers. Didnt seem professional at all...
She doesnt grade things in a timely manner. At one point in this semester I waited five weeks for feedback on several assignments, some even were where you had to build off of the last assignment. She did a lot of the same topic every week, so it was drawn out til you had literally nothing left to say. Take her at your own risk.
Professor Atkins is amazing. As long as you are willing to put in the effort, and pay attention to any criticism she gives, you will do great in her class. She replies fast and clearly and is always there to help. I am taking her again this semester for LIT1000. Shes great, definitely recommend!
I was not a fan of this professor. I had an illness in the family which required me to be at the hospital frequently. Once home, constant watch and medication administration took its toll on me. When I went to Professor Atkins for guidance and to explain my struggles she was unwavering with her grading and deadlines. Horrible experience.
Im going to cut through everything and just say that she makes you work for your grade. She is a great teacher that gets you involved into actually THINKING about topics that you necessarily would not have entertained. She is very passionate and You HAVE to TRY! English or Lit major? You need to take her class. She will inspire you to do your best
If you can take anyone else for LIT1000, do it. Professor Atkins is a really harsh grader and will take off points if you don't exactly follow her instructions, even when they are ambiguous. There are no extensions, that includes dead grandma, unless she wants to give them. She also doesn't grade work in a timely manner AT ALL.
I took her in the summer and she was okay. Her class helped me with writing papers. We used the Einstein book and it was super boring but overall I would say she was fair but I wouldnt take her class again unless I had no other choice.
She does not accept excuses or anything. Won't hesitate to give you a 0 on a late assignment. Unforgiving. Pretty tough grader but not unreasonably so. Gives lots of links for assignments to help you. Lots of assignments.
Absolutely awful. Gives tons of assignments with really poor instructions. Also very rude and not willing to help.
Professor Atkins is clear on what she expects. Everything is in the syllabus. Her modules on each assignment tell you exactly how to do the assignments. She even gives example papers. She is a tough grader, but you will thank her in the long run.
Professor Atkins is respectful, professional, and makes her instructions clear. There were many setbacks this semester and she was accommodating by extending deadlines. However, be prepared to work and patient when getting grades back. Although I don't recommend getting the textbooks. The information and passages can be found for free online.
Not willing to help. Rude. Class is manageable if you do your work and know what you're doing. Won't hesitate to give a zero.
She is a horrible teacher. She is very slow at grading. I think she is very rude. I would never take her again even if it was a classes I needed to graduate with. She makes assignments way harder than they need to be and expects too much for assignments. too many rules. Take her class with precaution.
Professor Atkins (now McKinney), is a tough grader. She will stretch to find flaws in your work. She takes forever to grade, and don't even think about emailing her, she gives poor excuses and doesn't care about what you have to say (God complex). On top of everything she is racist making comments and has yelled at students.
one of the most enjoyable English classes I have ever taken. would 100% recommend this class to anyone that needs it
Just avoid this lady. She talks badly about her classes and is very rude to students.
Do not take this professor unless she's your last option. Though I passed her class, the workload given was unnecessary, and she's also very, very rude to her students. If a student is two minutes late, she claims it's a distraction, but she's literally the one who stops the class and stares the student down. Honestly, try avoiding this teacher.
Having attended Polk State College for two years, Professor Atkins (now McKinney) is by far the worst instructor I've ever encountered. Her unwelcoming attitude and unprofessional behavior create a tense environment. She publicly scolds latecomers, disrupting the class herself. If possible, CLEP this course and by all means take another professor.
I realized after taking her class that it shows in your work whether or not you're actually putting in any effort. Some of my classmates struggled to understand how to actually write papers so they did bad in this class. Strict on what was required but it helps give you direction for assignments. Would take again personally.
Professor Atkins (now Wiggins McKinney), is by far one of the worst professors you could choose. The prompt for the first essay is so generic and she flagged my essay as A.I. despite the only similarities being the concepts (again the prompt was so generic that there wasn't much else to write about). Also, she is a very tough grader.
