This dude doesn't have a good structure for teaching. His lectures are scattered, homework is a pain, plus there's pre-class quizzes that he posts only a day in advance. I spent most of my time reading the book. I worked through whatever practice midterm he posted. But guess what? The tests were totally different in question type and difficulty
When he talks its like his words have no substance, it literally does not make sense. You really have to spend time studying a lot by yourself for certain topics for them to make sense. Theres a lot of homework and the textbook is also useless. His practice midterms are NOTHING like the actual test so prepared to be screwed over.
Homework was good practice in understanding the material. Al-Binni gave pretty good explanations on the overhead of how to do problems in class. The first midterm wasn't fair, but he adjusted the curve accordingly, which helped. The second midterm was really fair based one what we did in class and tutorial.
Avoid if possible... the worst... he's a new professor and UW made a mistake hiring him.
Super unorganized, doesn't post materials far enough in advance and also decreased the amount of time we had for a midterm (while we were taking the midterm). Dry lecturer, not good at explaining things.
Prof. Al-Binni is very knowledgeable in physics. However, he's unable to clearly explain concepts in class. His lectures are super dry and he says "umm" and "ehh" way too much. Had to do a lot of self-studying to keep up. His redeeming quality is that he knows that his tests are difficult and will curve them accordingly.
By far the worst Physics professor at UW. Terrible lectures, terrible clicker questions, terrible exams, avoid at all costs.
I'm very surprised by the number of negative reviews here, he's really not that bad. He explains things pretty well, but even if you don't think he does he has a lot of office hours. He also posts recordings of himself going over practice exams. Overall, decent professor.
Too smart. Doesn't bother to actually teach the information. He just puts it on a slide, reads the information, and makes you figure out how to solve stuff when practicing for an exam. And then when he shows you how to solve practice problems before an exam. He solves w/o showing work and using methods he doesn't teach you.
He talks in a monotone, says um and ah way too much, doesn't teach anything and reads off his slides that are basically copied from the textbook. His practice exams are full of errors and mistakes and he's overall a very frustrating professor.
I was nervous taking this class based on the reviews here and I don't think they're accurate. Al-Binni is not the most dynamic lecturer but he is super available in the study center/office hours, tests are fair. He's very patient 1on1. Physics is freakin' hard and requires a huge amount of outside work, not doing well in the class is not his fault.
The only reason to go to class is to get the participation questions, he just reads off the slides that are taken directly from the book. Even when he demonstrates problems, he uses a very difficult and convoluted way of getting the answer, so, unless you want to be confused, don't watch the screen at that point.
Dr. Binni is an excellent professor! Always available for his students . Smart teacher and understand physics very well. He is always well prepared. The lectures are very organized like masterpiece. I enjoyed his lectures and he made sure that everyone in the class in the same page. If you want to understand physics, he is the best professor at UW
I don't totally understand the harsh reviews for this guy (I'm taking 114 Winter 2017). The lectures are definitely a little challenging to grasp with the way he explains the concepts, but it is in no way impossible to do well. The online homework for 114/117 is quite daunting, so be prepared for that aspect of the class.
basically teach nothing during class but have hard-to-death exams reading power-point every lectures boring af
I'm surprised by the negative reviews. Al-Binni has been delightful. He's got a lot of dad jokes and his lectures can be dull, but if you work outside of class, you'll be okay. He's wants his students to succeed, even to the point of altering the difficulty of the second midterm based on class feedback. You could have a lot worse prof than Al-Binni
Only marking this wouldn't take again bc it's the only Phys class I need. The Phys intro series is designed to make you learn everything yourself doing the online hw anyway, prof is just there to reiterate stuff. He is not an engaging lecturer but tries. Has a lot of office hours, which is really good.
Professor Usama has his unique humour! He is trying to make every student understood the materials and his tests are actually very fair because all the questions are shown during lectures(if you do good notes and pay attention). He also has a good amount of office hours and he is willing to make extra hours for you if you ask. Overal he is good!!!
the goat.
Honestly one of the best professors i've ever had! He really cares about his student's success and he is SO funny during lecture! Physics is a really hard subject anyways but his tests are fair and do-able. I have him again for PHYS 115 this quarter and he took all our feedback and changed how he did some things! He hosts a review every Friday!
His lectures are really helpful for explaining the material, but one thing I would mention is that you have to do all the online homework before going to class each other. Not so fun. But practice questions are really helpful
His lectures can be boring but I found it sort of soothing, like ASMR. Exams are not very hard as long as you keep up with the class and do the practice exam. Very accessible and has many office hours. Hes a very nice person to the point where I think the world would be better with more people like him. If youre not a self-learner, avoid him.
One of my favorite professors at UW. His lectures outline the radings he assigns for homework and he has a review session every friday plus office hours twice a week. If you go to the review session and put in the extra time to study you will do well in the class. A plus is he is super funny and lectures are full of jokes to make students laugh.
One of the best prof's I've had here at UW. Al-Binni was overall very nice and actually cared if you learnd. Definitely go to office hours if you have the chance, he has so many review options so best prof honestly
One of the few professors here that actually cares about his students. Super nice and willing to explain concepts until we understand. Gives lots of practice. Wish I could take him again :')
This guy cares about his students. He is very accessible in scheduling office hours / meeting out of class. His lectures are so dry, and so slow, Im disengaged after the first five minutes. Theres a lot of uhs and mulmbing. 2x on Panopto is not fast enough. The most frustrating thing is that he constantly forgets to post assignments on time.
too boring! He's nice in person but doesn't know how to teach. If you want to self teach yourself, this is your class
Super nice teacher, is accessible. His lectures match the textbook, but in lecture he is not very helpful at explaining difficult topics. He will often say something important very quickly and never mention it again. Slightly unorganized and once completely messed up an exam and didn't let us know the mistakes till half way through the test.
This was a bad course. I spent most of my week studying and still received a lousy grades on the exams. The amount of work and time I put into this course, never matched the grade I received. Al-Binnis practice exams did not match up to his actual exams. Lectures were confusing and even in office hours concepts never became clear. Dont take!
This class was hard and physics is for sure not my thing. The tests were brutally hard (like all physics exams). But, professor Al-Binni really took the time to help students in office hours. Hes a nice guy.
Really one of the nicest and genuine profs I've had at the UW. Physics is really hard, and although his lectures are not the best, he makes up for it in how available he is outside of class. He listens to, and cares about his students, and that cannot be argued. Physics is hard, but it could be worse.
Dr AlBinni is a very nice and calm person and his lectures are easy to follow and the homework really helps. You will need to read the book before every lecture so it's important to be a self motivated student. You dont need to fully teach yourself while reading because he will lecture the next day which really helps to make sense in your head.
Lectures were very boring because he simply reads off the slides and doesn't actually explain or teach material. Requires a lot of outside learning by yourself in order to do well on the tests.
I agree he reads off of lecture slides and is not clear with explanations. Doesnt teach well I was often confused attending lectures. Lots of learning on your own, rely on Mastering Physics. MP is also graded (pre-lectures only) so beware on how many tries you do, and remember to do pre-tests! Can be a little grade saver.
Usama is a good professor who teaches one of the hard weed-out classes at UW. The material is challenging, and it can be hard to understand just from his lectures. However, he is helpful in office hours and runs review sessions on his own time before lectures so you can tell he cares about learning. A solid choice if you have to do physics.
He's a good professor, but his lectures are boring and he has a very monotone voice. If you take this class, you have to pay attention in lecture because if you miss one thing, you're screwed. The content is also really difficult, so pay attention and do well on the homework, but he is available outside class for help and is alright at explaining.
really good lecturer and fair to his grading. his voice is pretty one tone but he will always make sure the class understands. I am taking phys 115 next quarter just because he is teaching it otherwise i would take it later
Professor Al-Binni is a great professor. If you are willing to learn, he is very willing to help. I strongly suggest making time if you can to go to office hours. He will work through problems with you and listen to you. Also, he is very understanding and fair when it comes to assignments and deadlines. He genuinely wants you to succeed!
Prof. Al-Binni is a great professor; he knows the physics well. However, it's ultimately on you to do the work diligently and ask questions - if you don't ask questions to clear up misunderstandings during office hours, you're going to have a bad time. If you do the HW/practice problems (optional) diligently, you should do well.
Professor Al-Binni may not be the best professor at UW, but he is definitely a good one. His lectures could be boring. If you want to get a 4.0 in his class, make sure you understand materials thoroughly and utilize his office hour as much as possible. He answers students' questions carefully.
Online due to Covid. Didn't lecture for the entire first week and never corrected the calendar to reflect how behind he was. The midterm announced with 1 day's notice at the same time as four lectures and homework. Never knew my grades and didn't give the solutions to the 2nd hw being tested. You don't get to expect leniency and then not give it.
If you have the opportunity to take al-Binni take him! Physics is a hard class regardless of whos teaching the course. But al-Binni is avaliable outside of class and will walk you through your trouble spots and explain it in many ways to help you. BEST physics professor at UW!!
Professor al-Binni is great! Physics 115 is a hard class, but his lectures are great and very informative - he holds office hours about 3 times a week as well. He also makes a lot of dad jokes. Take his class!
I guess my review is jaded by being online due to covid, but this is just a skillshare class at X^6 higher cost. No in person lectures, all AWFUL pre recorded, and the online format is pointlessly convoluted. Busywork. Compared to Bellevue college, UW profs get a big fat fail for their nonexistant "teaching" this quarter. Waste of time and money.
Not sure if it's possible for a professor to care less about converting their class to work with online learning due to covid, but I'd be impressed if I saw it. "Lectures" are useless clicker-question reviews. You WILL be teaching yourself from google and the book. Exams are pointlessly brutal and use total moon logic. Glorified skillshare class.
For online classes he fails on almost every level. 1st, he doesn't upload lectures in time, uploading some the night before the test. 2nd, his explanations often skip steps or even end with the wrong answer (at least according to the textbook). Third, he makes mistakes on test questions all the time, so you better check your canvas notifications
This class is overall a disappointment. Al-binni has obviously failed to convert to an online format, as there are practically no lectures, in the traditional sense. 95% of what you learn in this class WILL be self-taught, so you have to be ready for a grind. His pre-quizzes are very easy, whereas his midterms are unnecessarily difficult.
This online class structure was horribly unorganized. Lectures and their attached required work are never uploaded on time so even if you try to keep up with the schedule, you can't. Lectures are dull even on 2x speed and repetitive of the textbook, office hours and review sessions are slow. Midterms are fair but have lots of mistakes.
He is a fun guy, I hope he is doing great. Exams are hard, but it is not impossible. Lectures are helpful, but practice tests were the most useful resource for this class.
He's a really nice guy but I don't recommend taking physics with him. His exams usually have a couple of mistakes that will cost you a ton of time to try to figure out. His final which he said wasn't going to go into as much detail as the midterms was wayyy harder. The curve isn't great either.
Professor Al-Binni did rather well at transitioning to an online format in my opinion. Yes, his lectures arent posted on time every day, but if you just roll with the punches and do the lectures when they are posted, youll do great. Hes constantly available for help and he really seems to care if you do well, more so than any professor Ive had.
Professor Al-Binni seemed like a cool guy and maybe it was just the online format due to COVID, but his classes were pretty dull and technology issues seemed frequent, it was also difficult to get ahold of him via email even after multiple times. Not too accessible or accommodating to students during this time.
Most of the reviews are far too harsh and act as if another stem prof would have made the exams, work, and curve "nicer" or "easier". His lectures aren't the best and exams are hard, but he is overall a fine professor and has roughly 2 office hour times all 5 days a week so there is plenty time to access help if you're struggling.
Get ready to teach yourself everything and be given no feedback! "lectures" are literally just a series of clicker questions, he actually doesn't "teach" a single. damn. thing. Uses absolute moon logic to "prevent cheating" I got an A in multivariable/vector calculus. I shouldn't be struggling with ALGEBRA PHYSICS. Paying UW to teach myself? bruh
I feel like he gets a bad rep because physics 115 is hard haha but he actually cares about your ability to pass the class, he sets up so many opportunities to make himself available to answer questions and gives suggested problems that he even works through live on zoom. Never had a science prof go this above and beyond to be accessible
Everything's asynchronous so you have to teach yourself, but he was very accessible and had more office hours than the previous physics teacher I had.
I'm taking this course over the summer, supposed to have class Tuesday-Friday but began requiring Mondays as well with no notice. Lectures are also hard to watch, physics is not exciting to begin with but it is overall very bland.
Consider donating your tuition money to Khan academy instead.
f you cant think conceptually, you probably wont do very well in this class. He doesnt go into the specifications of using certain equations, but rather focuses on the larger concept as a whole. A lot of this class is teaching yourself, which requires practice problems. He knows what hes talking about and he might be too smart for what hes teaching
Very important to teach yourself outside of class, lectures are purely for review. The tutorial was the same deal. Best choice is to have a buddy to conquer this course with. Professor is fine, did not seem overly interested in students/course.
Prof. Al-Binni was definitely my best professor out of all of my classes this quarter. He's very passionate about the subject and teaches it well. His lectures are great, and he goes OUT of his way to help every single student if they ask. The exams are very tough (class averages of 53 and 47 for midterms), but he will curve it up to a 65.
Professor Al-Binni is extremely carrying. He is accessible for office hours nearly 5 days a week to make sure everyone will have a chance to attend. It is not hard to get a good grade if you don't skip classes and do your homework.
Great professor!
Super nice prof, makes extra effort to be there and available in multiple settings for anyone struggling. Lecture is mainly review of textbook/opportunity for clarification/practice question time. Calm demeanor and sense of humor made difficult concepts worth the effort.
Best physics prof!!!!!!
physics has always been a course I needed to put a lot of time in but compared to other professors Usama puts so much time into this course and making sure all students get their questions answered. each midterm he holds a 3 1 hour long reviews to go over practice problems and answer student question outside of office hours. so much study material.
Professor Al-Binni is a really great professor! He goes out of his way to hold tons of (recorded) review sessions outside of class. I think it says a lot that he spends hours of his own time to try to help students prepare for exams. I find his explanations pretty clear and easy to follow and I would recommend him to anyone taking physics 114-116.
Attending lectures were a waste of time. Because physics at UW operates on a flipped classroom model, you pretty much teach yourself the material prior to class (in order to complete pre-lecture quizzes), and do practice problems in your own time (which again, is based on your own effort).
Al-Binni is great, he offers so much support outside of class. He posts numerous review sessions (which are actually helpful) and is very organized which makes learning the content easier. His lectures can sometimes be boring (bc physics can be boring) but he is still entertaining and cares about making class a productive and enjoyable time
He is very caring and clearly cares that he wants his students to succeed. As long as you complete the readings and engage in lectures you'll get an average grade. His content is organized, he creates weekly summary videos, records review sessions, and provides many practice exams and opportunities for practice. I'd highly reccomend his classes.
The Professor was amazing at teaching and always used fun examples to make the class more engaging. I would definitely want no other professor for a physics class. I genuinely wanted to attend every lecture!
Professor Al-Binni was awesome and very encouraging of our learning. He cares that we understand the topics presented in class. The tests are hard but he sets an absolute curve so that each exam is curved up if needed to meet 65%. As long as you do practice exams, lecture problems, and watch the review session videos, you'll do well!
Professor al-Binni is fantastic and provides great encouragement for our learning. He is genuinely concerned that we grasp the topics covered in class. While the tests may be challenging, he implements a fixed curve, ensuring that each exam is adjusted upwards if necessary to achieve a minimum of 65%. Excellent professor!
He's an icon, he's a legend, and he is the moment. Now come on now. I miss taking al-Binni's class. He had office hours everyday and gives a lot of support to students who don't understand class concepts. I hate physics with a passion, but made the class bearable.
Honestly one of the best professors I have had at UW. He gave clear and concise explanations during lecture, and I could definitely see that he put effort into making lectures as fun and exciting as possible. He kept the class updated on the grading progress and clearly communicated his expectations. Overall a great experience!
I have not had great experiences with physics teachers in the past, but he is seriously one of the best profs I've had at UW so far. Some lectures can be dry, but he's a funny guy and you can tell he cares about his students. He'll even answer the silly questions he gets asked during the class's active Q+A. Definitely made physics bearable.
He's nice, but this class is really hard. If you want to pass, show up to class, don't skimp readings, and ask questions. This class is heavily conceptual, so if ur not good at that, gl. He holds lots of office hours so make sure you go. Exams are hard but he curves the grade up so the average is 65%. Not that much hw. If u miss a day, ur behind.
He has been the best science professor I have had in college. He looks for different ways to explain the same thing so people can understand the concepts. He goes beyond with multiple office hours, answering emails and even having weekly reviews on the most difficult concepts for students. Content is hard but he truly cares for his students!!
Professor Al-Binni honestly was the best physics professor one could ask for. He kept the lectures interesting, cared about the students, and was understanding. On top of this the exams were absolutely doable, and if you studied for them, in my opinion, seemed very easy to do well on. I highly recommend taking his class.
Lectures felt slow, and repetitive because they were just restating the textbook. However, in-class demos and discussion were helpful in understanding the topics. al-Binni is a fun professor and does his best to explain confusing conflicts (i.e. breaking it down using what we already know), it's just that the content is difficult.
Professor al-Binni wants you to do well and offers multiple office hours to really take the time and help you understand things. I was super nervous about physics having never taken it before and UW weed out classes being super hard, but al-Binni really helped me out and I think I did pretty well in this class!
Usama is one of the best professors I've had at UW, I'd always struggled with physics in the past but his practice material is incredible-- the exams were always (in my opinion) much easier than the practice, so as long as you study accordingly the class is honestly kind of breezy, which I really appreciated. Would absolutely take him again
Prof. al-Binni is a very kind and caring professor. He is absolutely eager to help students, even with material outside of the course. He is approachable and has a good sense of humor. Take his class!
If you take 227 make sure you already know linear algebra
usama is a legend to me tbh 🔥🔥 physics is hard but it was a lot easier than i thought with him. he has two grading methods for the big exams: 20% from all three exams (two midterms and the final) or 20% of your best midterm and 40% of your final so you COULD bomb a midterm and still get a good grade. i hope i can have him as a prof again!
Prof. Al Binni is an angel among men. Get to know him during office hours where he will learn your name and give very personalized advice for what you need help on. His class is very homework heavy but has a very generous policy where each homework category is curved up x 1.25. Tests are not difficult and if you put fair work it'll be breezy.
Class structure and content was very straightforward! He was also very clear on test expectations and the study guides are very very similar to the actual test. His lectures are very clear too
This class was especially hard to succeed in because the lecture and readings (which were both necessary for a grade) did not correlate well with exams. We would be given practice exams completely different than the actual exam, and when the class did well on an exam (at or above the 65% threshold) the tests would become harder.
Profesor Al Binni genuinely cares about your success. If you pay attention in class and go to him when you need help or explanations he does everything possible to help you. He is also a very genuine and carnig prof.
He is one of the best professors at UW. He is very caring about students, explains the material really well, makes Physics very interesting, and is very helpful during office hours. He has reasonable amount of work for PHYS 114 and is very fair at grading. Overall, he's an awesome professor. Definitely recommend taking no one but him for Physics.
Caring professor. Sometimes hard to follow along in lectures, but great professor gives lots of studying material before exams and curves it up when needed.
I had a great time in this class. The lectures were straightforward, well-organized, and engaging! I greatly appreciated the use of lecture slides. This class uses a flipped classroom model, and I found that doing readings/notes beforehand helped tremendously. I had to retake this class, and he made physics make sense to me and not scary!
Al-binni is the best physics professor available, he clearly has a lot of experience and the way his class is organized is most conducive to students performing there best.
If you read the textbook go to class and do the practice exams the class is pretty straight-forward. Don't expect to get a good grade the exams are incredibly hard but they are very similar to the practice exams!
I'm incredibly glad to have taken the course with Professor al-Binni. Course expectations and content on homework and exams were always very clear. He also provides tons of resources for studying, and cares about his students' success. When I was struggling at the start of the course, he reached out to me to make sure I was doing okay in the class
Al-Binni is da goat
Lectures were dry and dull. No offense but professor's teaching style was really boring, or maybe just not my style. Office hours are sparse.
will do well if you do practice problems and read textbook
Al-Binni is a good teacher for the time he spends actually teaching. To my taste he gives too much lecture time waiting for students to answer online questions or do discussions (in which people often say nothing). This could be because I took his earliest class. He really shines when you ask follow up questions.
Al-Binni was a really nice professor who was always willing to help students when they needed help. Always was in a positive mood and made learning a tough topic like physics feel a little less extreme. The exams were not easy but if you do the practice exams and know the content, you should do well in the class.
