I absolutely love her! She is super-nice and helpful! You will definitely learn a lot, too!
I took her "General Chemistry for Engineers" course. Honestly the worst chemistry course that I have ever taken.
She is very kind and very helpful. If you pay attention in lecture, take solid notes, and do your homework, you should earn a decent grade. Her class is very curved which helps eliminate some pressure for a first-time chemistry student, because it is a hard concept to grasp at first.
Overall, not a bad professor but she just preaches the textbook and teaches us nothing we couldn't have learned by reading and taking notes. Also she has a bad time keeping my (and what seems like most of everyone else's) attention
Kulatunga's chem for today class can be fairly difficult if you don't keep up with daily studying and reading. Homework is done on the online program sapling which is not very well structured. Overall she is helpful but ALOT of information is thrown at you fairly quickly. Sometimes she explain's things from her perspective so ask questions.
Took Gen Chem for Engineers and it was a very dull class. She goes over the material vaguely. It's hard to pay attention. You have to study for the tests. Gives you clicker question so you come to class.
Professor Kulatunga is great! I was nervous about taking this class because my chemistry teacher in high school was awful and I knew nothing but Kulatunga has built a wonderful chemistry foundation for me and my confidence in chemistry has improved significantly! I have an A in her class and feel confident that I will do well in Gen Chem 1 and 2.
She is very nice and this class was fairly easy. Make sure to come to class because she randomly does clicker questions that count a lot towards your grade. She drops your lowest test and hw grade. My only issue was that she kept messing up my clicker grades and then called me a liar when I asked to correct them.Hopefully that doesn't happen to you
Ushiri is adorable. She is so nice, and very thorough with information. She is really sarcastic sometimes and so it is funny. I honestly did not open my book once for this class. Lecture slides were all posted online and those have all you need to know and more. Attendance is not "mandatory", but you do get grades for clicker questions :/
She is a reasonable teacher. If you feel as though you have no prior knowledge of chemistry you will learn everything you need for gen chem 1. Pay special attention to chapter 4 it gets tricky and is the most challenging.
Kulatunga was a wonderful professor. I highly recommend her to any student. Her explanations and review sessions before the tests and final helped substantially. The tests are not difficult if you study! My lowest grade on a test was a 92%.
She is a very awesome prof! She enjoys teaching! She wants to help you but also wants you to learn yourself! I'd take her if you could!
Really nice professor! Sarcastic at times but it is really funny!
Nice lady. A bit ditzy at times. Doesn't really go into depth too much about the material at hand, and likes to go off on rants about saving the environment. If she doesn't know how to explain something, she'll say "you remember this from Gen Chem 1" and moves on. Not too helpful but if you go to class, study and pay attention a B is possible.
I took her for lab and she was very nice and helpful. She was always willing to point your group in the right direction if you weren't too sure what to do. Made lab easier than I thought it would be. Would recommend her.
I took her Gen. Chem for Engineers course. It's a easy and hard at most points. Most of the material lectured in class must be self taught outside of class and you definitely need to prepare for exams. Homework is assigned online and there are extra credit opportunities. She's funny, but there are times she can't keep everybody's attention.
Not a specific teacher, a lot of self teaching. Assumes you know the things she can't teach well and therefore skips them. Want you to succeed but doesn't know how to make you successful. Convoluted method of teaching too. You can pass but ehh.
Her lectures are pretty much useless if you're trying to follow along. She moves really quickly through the slides and has a strong accent. Passed this class with our online homework assignment and by reading the text book. Though she does have a nice final grade curve. A 75 percent in the class is considered a B
Kulatunga is an OK professor. Her slides cover the basics, you'll need to do the homework and probably read the book if you want to get a high grade in her class. That being said you really don't need to show up since she posts the slides online anyway.
She's okay, but you'll learn a lot more from the book and homework than from the lectures. I wouldn't say she's good at keeping the student's attention, as a good portion of the class is either on yik yak, or doing something irrelevant on their laptopphone. Tests are easy to study for; they are similar to what is given on her practice exams.
I had taken AP Chemistry already and went into this class with a pretty good foundation and found that as long as you were present for the lectures, did the online homework, and did the review guides, the class was not very difficult!
Went to class sometimes to have knowledge of upcoming group assignments and iclicker base did not work. She reads the slideshow to you in class and she posts online so you can teach yourself, which you will be doing a lot of.
She is a good teacher and is there for you. Lots of homework. The tests are not too bad as long as you study the test reviews she gives you. If you just do the homework and study the test reviews you'll get an A
Pretty hard to understand her with her thick accent, and most of the class was on yik yak yakking about how horrible her class was the whole hour. Kind of a joke.
The test were easy if you did the homework and went to class. Clicker questions will be the death of you if you dont go to class. Overall, do your homework and go to class and you'll be fine.
Attend lectures for clicker points and do the homework and practice exams. If you don't do this you're grade will just fall. Her lectures made me more confused than when I self taught myself, but clicker questions are in class. Exams are fine if you do the homework and the practice exams. Not the hardest class but not easy at all.
Overall an easy class, but sometimes very confusing when relaying information. Sometimes she would say, "Do you understand? Yes, you do. Let's move on." without giving time for students to say yes or no. It was a lecture hall, but she allowed students to raise hands and ask questions. GO TO CLASS to get credit, but pretty much learned from homework
Very lecture-centric class. Lots of information to take in, but it isn't hard if you show up and pay attention. Accessible outside of class during office hours if you need the extra help. Textbook isn't necessary as lecture notes cover everything, but access code is mandatory, and it is usually cheaper to buy both the code and book in a bundle.
She's a very good professor and she truly cares about her students. The homework is kind of pointless though. None of the exercises from the homework ever appeared on the tests. Homework is due at the end of each week. Tests are very similar to the practice test. So, DO THEM.
Her lectures were ok. I think the only reason I did so well in this class is because I've already learned chem. Be prepared to study the homework and practice tests. The practice tests are super similar to the actual test, so be sure to study those.
I had her as my professor for when I was a peer leader. She was great but she never answers her emails! and is never at her office for office hours! It's incredibly frustrating when you have to talk to her about something important
This is one of the best science/math professors I have had. She is absolutely HILARIOUS and cares about every student. If you have questions during lecture, she is more than happy to answer them.
She is very good at explaining concepts and relating them to real world examples. She is open to questions and always makes sure that her class is understanding the material. She is clear on due dates and even sends reminders the day before. She is entertaining and cares about her students.
Her lectures are clear and she assigns online homework thats really easy. I didn't really ever use the book but you do have to buy the web access to do the homework. She gives a lot of clicker points so going to class is a good idea. Her exams are worth a lot of your grade but she gives a practice exam every time and they are multiple choice.
Im currently taking her now.. and its honestly a struggle! Im getting by in her class by watching YouTube videos & reading the textbook. If you dont have personal & prior knowledge to the material..i wouldnt recommend her. She rushes the lecture ambushing us with too much at one time, she goes extremely fast & REFUSES to answer questions.
Cant give her a 0 so gave her a 1
Kulatunga is basically a typical college professor. She lectures, which are pretty good in terms of getting the information straight up. She also assigns weekly homework which won't take more than an hour, relatively easy. Her test reviews are what truly make the test. It's a copy of an old test to study, and the tests are basically the same.
Lectures can be very confusing at times. If you don't have a good background in Chemistry going into the class, it will be slightly difficult for you.
If you didn't take chem in high school, you'll be a little lost. However, she tries her best to get you to succeed; the practice test is just like the exam and she posts the lecture notes online the same day. If you pay attention in class and do the homework, you'll be fine.
Kulatunga truly cares about the wellbeing of her students, but unfortunately she is just a mediocre teacher. She's not bad, but having taken most of the material before, I know that she did not do a great job either. However, she is clear about expectations and the class is easy as long as you put in the bit of work required to meet them.
Her lectures were pretty good, she goes into good details when explaining practice problems which helps a lot. Her review questions online were helpful for studying for the tests. If you go to her class and put effort into reviewing the powerpoint slides after then you'll do good. You also get a 100 on clicker questions just by giving an answer.
She started out fun, but then towards the middle of the semester, her classes became extremely dull. The homework was annoying, but not impossible. Be prepared to study for the tests, because her lectures aren't enough. She is passionate about chemistry, but not as good at communicating the actual material. Must show up for clicker questions.
The class is easy but it gets pretty boring. Her lectures drag and it feels like she just repeats herself. However she does give plenty of heads up to due dates, test dates, etc. If it weren't for daily clicker questions worth 10% of your grade, it definitely would be a skippable class.
She's a sweet lady. We had four multiple choice exams including the final, 6 quizzes and about 10 homework sessions. This class was hard not to pass but you really needed to invest some time and effort to get an A. Homework was harder than tests. I'd recommend taking her. She doesn't take attendance but does administer clicker questions for points.
Most of the class is a review of a high school chemistry class, though the material picks up a bit at the end. The lectures are easy to follow and always posted online before and after class. Dr. Kulatunga gives plenty of material to study, like practice tests that are very similar to the exam itself.
Decent professor, but she moves much too fast in her lectures, and most of the time is spent taking notes and not listening. Even still, It is near impossible to take notes on a slide before she moves on to the next. She is sometimes hard to follow as well. It is however helpful that she posts the power points online.
The lectures go pretty fast. She's not that great at explaining things but she posts plenty of practice problems on canvas. I went to the tutors for help most of the time. Need to study to get a good grade.
I really enjoyed her class! I've always struggled with chemistry and her style of teaching really worked for me. She has a lot of leniency towards grading, a bunch of clicker points are dropped, and she has a great curve for the total grade of the course. Would definitely take again.
She posts lecture notes beforehand so you should def copy them or print them out before class bc she moves quickly. Look over weekly practices and learning objectives, they help you understand the material better. Clicker questions are done every class so go to get easy points.
professor kulatanga is always nice and respecting!
She does have a thick accent but once you get past that she's a decent professor. If you haven't taken chem in high school then she really tries to help you, but you will struggle a little bit. The class is curved overall and that helps a lot. homework and quiz every week but not on the week after a test. One attempt per test.
Dr. Kulatunga showed to care a lot about her students, will help in any way possible, and likes what she does. She offers weekly homework and quizzes, and tests that are relatively easy, if you have studied what you need. Paying attention to lectures is key since most of the information is taken from there.
Dr. Kulatunga is not bad. I took chem for engineers back in 2018. Her lectures were boring, and she makes them mandatory because of the clicker questions, which amount to a lot of points. The first few tests are very hard, but if you do the clicker questions, the homework, and if you study a lot for the final you'll be fine. Could have been worse
I dreaded signing on to this class every morning and you will too. Boring as all can be. Also refuses to clarify content or answer questions.
She is a good teacher and she constantly shows that she cares about her students. If you listen to the lectures, you'll be able to do the homework easily. If you do the homework and review the presentations before the exam, you'll get a good grade. Simple.
I think she is such a sweet lady and if you show interest in her class, she will show interest back towards you and your questions. :) She's a real blessing. She explains things well and is definitely under-rated.
Love the grading system. Caps points for all categories. Ex: each test was 160 points but she only counted 150 of those points. 5 points extra credit available. Go to the lectures they help a ton. She does polling questions but arent graded. More than willing to help with any problems you have. HIGHLY recommended.
If you do the work and go to class you'll be fine. Not very nice though.
I took this class as a freshman and I would say it is fairly in the middle. There are quizzes and homework every week. We had a textbook I never used. She basically teaches from a PowerPoint. The PowerPoints are really good tho and prepare you. You need to be there for the clickers and other than that study and do the homework and you will pass.
She's actually really nice if you get to know her, I didn't take AP Chemistry like the rest of my friends so I really struggled to retain the topics. If you are familiar with the topic it's easy, the grading system is very merciful, if you aren't ... prepared to put extra effort. She is willing to help those struggling!
Kulatunga was an exceptional chem professor. Her lecture slides were all easily available for study, and her lecturing style was student-oriented. She gave many chances to practice concepts within class, and made many graded participation opportunities. While there wasn't often humor in her class, I definitely enjoyed her style of teaching.
Class sets you up for success and isnt very difficult. Professor Kulatunga has awesome lecture slides and she doesnt move too quickly. Friday sessions are mandatory and can help cement concepts but overall attending every lecture was what seemed to work the best.
Chemistry is my least favorite and weakest subject. I was able to pass at the very end. She does not do weighted grading (all points added up) so that is the main reason why I passed. Her accent wasn't too bad at times. She is nice and will answer all your questions!
Professor Kulatunga is amazing! Her teaching style is really good and her slides are the best. You do not need to open the book to understand the content. Her exams are not hard, but there are a lot of chapters in them. She gives participation points and she is lovely. She was one of the best professors that I had. I truly recommend her to anyone!
Overall a solid professor. I never felt like I left one of her lectures with any questions. I get her accent can be a bit difficult to understand sometimes, but the powerpoint is honestly more than enough to pass the exams with a good score at worst. Attendance is "mandatory" because of Clickers, but you can do them from home without issue.
She is a pretty straight forward teacher, if you go to the class you should be able to pass no problem. Go to class most of the time as she does clicker problems, these get capped so it should be an automatic 10%, along with the homework. She drops the 2 lowest test scores. She also has a grading scale such as if you have a C u actually have a B.
Kulatunga is a good professor to take starting out in chemistry, and she covers her bases for beginners on navigating college. Her lecture powerpoints are the key to getting good grades on tests and making sure you know the information well conceptually to succeed. Her practice tests are basically meant to help you get a good feel for her tests.
Participation is somewhat necessary - you have to do clickers up to a point. It is an easy class and her posting the PowerPoint plus the lecture videos help if you don't go. Quizzes are weekly, but they are capped at 50 points. Excellent professor with forgiving grading and cares about students passing
Professor Kulatunga is a pretty solid professor to have, she is sometimes hard to understand and can move fast at times but the expectations are very clear. We had weekly homework and small quizzes and then 3 exams and a final. The class grade was curved but the tests were not. She gave practice exams which were extremely helpful.
Super sweet, great lectures, 3 tests and a final. Gives you old exams to study from. Lectures are really helpful. OWL hwk can be very hard, even the tutors don't know but it gives you solutions which is helpful. Clickers and quizzes are capped at 50 halfway thro the semester so you won't need to attend all classes, lectures are posted online.
Not terribly charismatic but her lectures are decent and there were a couple small extra credit opportunities
Dr. Kulatunga is an amazing professor! I took her class this summer and she was great with helping students learn the content very fast. She always answers questions in class and offered office hours to help students as well. 100% would recommend taking her class.
Lectures went extremely fast and could be confusing, but she is available for office hours and peer leading sessions can help. Also, there is a lot of rounding and extra credit so there is room for error. Overall, she cares and she makes class fun, so if you understand the material the class is fine.
Took CHM2023 in the summer 2023. Participate in the iClickers and do your homework, clickers and homework are capped so DO THEM even if you don't get 100%. Long lectures during the summer but pay attention + you get a break during the lecture. good prof, lots of chances to do good, you can study her slides and read the online textbook
"As you will see with the grading chart, it is almost impossible to fail this class" - Ushiri Kulatunga. Easy A if you have time for it. Attendance is not really mandatory, but a small portion of grade is given to some in-class questions answered digitally. Lectures kinda suck, but the slides are online and useful for studying.
Very thick accent difficult to understand. Lectures are mostly pointless. Class is easy if you participate you get a lot of points. Course is easy difficult to fail.
Fairly easy class. The grading scale is very forgiving (C- starts at 57%). The lectures move very fast in class as she is just reading off a PowerPoint. Pay attention in class and do the homework and you should be fine.
Easy class but her lectures are incredibly monotone and boring. She seems to take the long way explaining everything without condensing it in a graspable way too and I know this because I've been able to explain 90% of the concepts to my section better than she is which says something about how teaching styles need to be adaptable. Mid at best.
She is good at explaining material, but honestly you have to go home and practice to actually get a good grade on the test for my semester she did not drop any test grades but did drop other assignments and attendance so to get an A you have to pass all exams.
Peer leading with Dr. Kulatunga was such a great experience this semester. It is an easy upper level chemistry course and it is so fun. You help Gen Chem 1 students with a worksheet on Fridays and have your own class. Great for building leadership skills.
Overall the difficulty of this class was very reasonable. The grading scale is very generous and Kulatunga is great at explaining chemistry. Even if you don't like the lectures, you can still study the PowerPoints at home and the test questions were not surprising at all.
If you attend class and do the clicker questions you will understand the material and only need to study a bit for the exams. If you have questions she is always available after class or during her office hours.
She was such a good professor when I took her. She made sure her students understood what she was teaching and the tests weren't difficult.
Chem is generally a fairly difficult class but Kulatunga made it bearable. She cares about students and as long as you put in the work, you will do well.
GENUINLY a GOOD PROFESSOR. This is coming from someone who didn't attend her class. If you do the i-clickers and actually do the homework, you WILL pass, you genuinely can't fail this class unless you don't try. Professor kaltunga is a SWEETHEART. Her exams mirror her practice exams. 10/10 would take her again.
She was just an okay professor nothing really phenomenal and her TAs were god awful
I didn't learn much from her monotonous lectures; the lengthy homework on Cengage was far more helpful. Many of my peers agree. She is a kind professor who extends deadlines when needed, but attendance is still "mandatory" due to iclicker participation. Make sure to study the practice exam well; it closely resembles the real one! (a feasible A)
only reads off PowerPoint and goes through the slides extremely quickly. get ready to race.
Kulatunga was an awesome chem professor!! she caps all the categories so there is room to miss iClickers or miss a homework without it affecting your grade a lot. the study guides that were provided were extremely helpful and so was peer leading. her exams are not too hard and her lectures are very explanatory. would def recommend
honestly great professor, if you have questions shes always answering kindly, i definitely recommend her, the tests are easy if you go to peer leading and so the practice test
"Gamma waves will kill you" was constantly said through the class. She was sassy but a wonderful teacher who was incredibly understanding. We were always ahead in the class, and she always gave plenty of chances to review. TAKE HER!!
Chemistry itself if a difficult course so I would prepare for lots of studying, although you can tell she really cares about chemistry the lectures can sometimes show the hardest version of a problem making you think it's harder than it is. Always go to peer leading, it's free points and free tutoring. Make friends in the class to study with!!
I got a super bad grade in her class. Her grading system is super generous though! I was going through stuff so I honestly did awful when I shouldn't have. She was definitely not the problem though. ATTENDANCE REALLY MATTERS! I switched majors but if I was still doing STEM I would want her. Study guides aren't the most helpful. 7.5/10
An amazing professor, really tried to help all students understand the class. If you show up to the lectures, are present for the entire time, you basically don't need to study outside of class. She's THAT thorough and clear. Would take her again if i could
Dr. Kulatunga was an amazing professor! She offered tons of help outside the class but also made sure to give us every note, example, and clicker that we worked on in class to study. The class is dependant on the 3 midterm exams and cumulative final but there are bonus points on each one. I would definitely recommend Dr. Kulatunga!
She's very nice and explained everything pretty in depth. I took her for the summer and I didn't really feel too rushed even though we had an exam every 10 days. In my opinion it was easier than chem 1. Very little studying required, math problems you did once and then u knew it. I'd take her if u can.
I took her for chem 1 for engineers. She basically just read directly from the powerpoint. She makes you pay for the clicker app as a way to test for attendance, so if you are going to skip class you can answer the questions and still get credit. Her tests are basic with one extra credit question at the end of each test.
She's very passionate about her class and tells jokes very often. If you miss a lecture your cooked. She has an accent but it's not terrible at all you can understand everything she says. I wish the class grade didn't fully depend on the exams tho. Once you fail one exam your cooked I hated it. Just remember to study ALOT.
Teaches very well, understood everything!
If you take notes during the lectures, do the clickers, do the homework (2 attempts and feedback) and do the chapter practice worksheets, you will pass with an A. She can go a little fast during lecture, but all the powerpoints are made available before class and she does recordings of all the lectures.
Dr. Kulatunga is so sweet and genuinely such a great person AND professor. She gave us so many resources to succeed in the exams and the final exam. Clickers are super easy and so is the homework, both of which are capped. My least favorite part about chem2045 was the peer leading but that's capped too, and you can miss 3 of them.
This was a great class. I wish I had attended her office hours, but material was so well-taught that I didn't need to. Attendance isn't mandatory, but iClicker questions act in lieu of this. WRITE YOUR NOTES out physically! I saw a lot of people just writing over the slideshow, but writing everything myself helped a lot with content retention.
Such a good, funny professor. Lectures are nice and helpful, & she does practice problems to make sure we understood the concepts. Attendance isn't mandatory but you definitely need to be there to do iClicker questions. Peerleading was also helpful so you can practice more. Peerleading is a part of your grade to you can only miss 3 w/o penalty.
Dr. Kulatunga was an amazing professor and easy to talk to! She gives a lot of resources and HW to study with on Canvas, so it's definitely important to look back at them if you are struggling in class. Clickers are a class grade, so attending class becomes mandatory that way. Peer leading was also really helpful, especially ones before the exams.
