Course Material Interesting, Very Good Lecturer
tough but fair, interesting lecturer, intelligent
Horrible...very unfair marker (he's a lawyer so assumes he's right with everything)
Sticks to his guns; hammers home the basics but expects you to pick up the details; says exactly what he means; humble; I suspect this rating almost directly relfects the raters mark.
all the lecture materials are online (audio & slides), which is very helpful. His notes are very clear and precise.
Gordon is a great prof. Read the text and go to class and you will do awesome in this class. Hes a very nice guy, so if you need help, dont be afraid to go talk to him after class.
This course is so boring, I almost died mid-term! However, Rose is really great. He is amicable, helpful, organized, and precise. Up-to-date on-line and quick with the marks. Psyc 100 is awful though(but easy)-- never again will I take any psychology!
Very unclear, impossible marker. Average midterm mark was 17/40. Available for lots of extra help, but expects you to be putting in 30 hours a week on the course
Has a large ego and a poor attitude towards students. If you attend his lectures, prepare to be insulted. He's often passive-aggressively hostile towards the audience. Thankfully, his teaching contract has not been renewed...
Lots of work! Horrible! Poor professor
everyone who took his midterm and studied hard ended up having mid 60%...now...is that our fault as "always"? or finally..will someone open their damn eyes and see that this prof is unfair teacher, midterm creator and marker...
Very big ego. Organized, but dull and boring material presented in a dull and boring way. If it weren't for some interesting case studies reviewed during class entire course would have been unbearably awful.
I honestly don't understand why people have such problems with him. I found his lectures to be really easy to follow and very clear. His tests were from his lectures so if you study his notes you'll be fine. He's a good teacher.
Research psych is boring, and he couldn't make it interesting - not his fault of course. Lectures are reasonably well organized, and the mid-term was fair. The post-midterm time is MUCH more dense in material, and is covered far too quickly. Expect a lot of independent learning in the last half term
Dr. Rose is an incredibly intelligent prof, who took incredibly boring course material and made it interesting. For the comment listed below about the midterm avg being 60% there was a mistake in the marking which made the midterm avg 80%. Since 201 is required, take this course with Dr. Rose.
Guy is completely average in every way. His teaching really has no effect on how well you do in the course. Midterm and the final are both multiple choice; if you can't get an A or a B on a MC test, then you probably don't know how to study properly. Ace both tests and don't mess up your project.
very good professor!! nice and easy going very helpful!! teaching tend to follow Dr. Mike Maraun's style. If you can really concentrated on what is being taught although task is difficult you will still be able to get a A!! overall an excellent man but you need to work hard and he will help you!!
boring prof. not a hard class..totally average, i almost fell asleep from boredom. talks about himself a lot. Get a good TA and this class is bearable
Research psych is dry, but future masters/phd students have to take it unfortunately. Dr. Rose is fairly nice and approachable, and presents good lecture notes. His exams test your knowledge without being either too hard, or so easy that they don't help you to learn anything. Average prof.
I think he was pretty good... made me more interested and i don't believe i fell asleep in lecture (might have... but don't think so)
The class is so boring and it is 3 hrs long. Most people don't go to class because the prof. basically memorize the textbook and present it to us. His notes are from the teachers' edition textbook, so he basically comes to class once a week to entertain us without having to do any preparation.
For me, he is the best prof in SFU so far.He is very organize, his lecture is very clear, all multiple choices exam. He is a fair marker, not so hard if u follow everything. However, the research paper is not so easy.
not 2 hard, although there is a lot of reading and memorizing to do. didn't find the lecs too impt 4 the exam. fair marker for the paper (only 6pgs). lecs were boring only b/c they were 3hrs long.exams are managable as long as you put some time&effort in2 it. overall i would take another class w/him
Strange dude.
he's a terrible marker

Boring prof, More of a lawyer than a psychologist. Needs to upgrade his psyc 100, disagreed with him on lots of things and contricts other sfu professors. Got an A+ in the class but had to yack about B.S that I disagreed with on the paper in order to get this mark.
worst prof ever
Really not a bad prof at all.he is a bit strange, but if you are willing to do the work,it will pay off.Go to class, ask Q's and use the tutroials to your advantage-they actually help!
A very nice prof, he's clear with what he wants. Exams are a bit tricky, but reasonable, all MC. Attending lecture helps understanding the textbook. Definitely read the text. He's very strict with the paper deadline
Strange? Boring? Worst prof ever?? You people must've either: 1)not gone to class or 2)did crappy and blame it on V.Grose Come on now, sure hes got the serious and 'mean' look during lecture, but he cracks the occasional joke to loosen the class up. He's also got funky looking sunglasses and drives a miata...what more can u ask for in a psyc prof
He seems to only know the area of psychology HE does research on,memory and eyewitness testimony-this is clear in lecture. He also whimped out on the segment of psychopathy in our class because that was an area he was "unfamiliar" with, which I thought was unfair to the students-should have at least had a guest lec.Prepare to get WORKED in his class!
arrogant man with an insufferable ego
U need to study hard in his class. The content is interesting. There are a lot of writting assignments. The multiple choice questions are tricky, but the short answers and essay are easy. It is a writting intensive course, however, it is helpful if u pay attention.
This guy should go back to being a lawyer. the class i had him for was a series of guest lecturers so it is difficult for me to rate him as a prof. What I can say though is that it sucked having him as a member of the audience in lecture. Everytime someone was late he would turn around and GLARE at them. Man was that ever annoying and distracting!
The prof only taught one lecture. Others are by guests. This is writing intensive class and also Reading intensive..You have to write 11 summaries; one for each week. Heavy load..have to hand in 3 10 pages essays and u only have one week to prepare for each + the summary..Really time consuming..if u have alot of time..take it...
I had to comment on the last persons comment. They TOTALLY exagerrated on the course content for Psyc 300. There is only 2 papers that are 8-10 pages in length. They are both the same paper (one is a draft) and you have lots of time to work on the first one. The second one you have a week to revise it. also, there is no summary the week of the draft
I took this class in Fall 2006. There are no longer exams in this class. This class is a lot of work. Do not take this class unless you like to do a lot of reading and writing. You cannot miss a single class or assignment no matter how small or you will get an incomplete for the course.
Gorden has designed a really great class to meet the writing reqs of SFU. YES, it is a lot of work. YES, you will have to write, read & think. BUT it is interesting & engaging, & really improves your writing. The requirements for the course are CLEAR and the TAs are awesome. The workload is average for a 300 class. Do the work & you'll be fine!!
First, its important that he is no the one to be rated...It is the COURSE that is in question! I do not doubt his teaching ability but much of the lectures were given my various profs. The workload is quite a bit but if you enjoy writing over exams than this is definetly not hard. But be prepared to write a lot and get on to what your TA expects.
Like the last comment, it's unfair to rate Dr. Rose. The TA's for this course were great. See them right away, find out their expectations and go from there. There shouldn't be any way not to get at least a B- out of this course. Not at all difficult. Although marks are doctored in the beginning.
He curves the marks like crazy so it doesn't matter if you do well. He doesn't let the TA's tell you what to do until the middle of the course to make it seem like you've improved. He will argue and be very defensive if anyone questions him or the way he set up the course. One of the worst professors here.
First off, EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF WORK. 2 pager due every week (mandatory, or fail course - else I would skip them all - worth 10%), plus rough drafts of final paper every 2 weeks, plus in tut. debate to prepare for. Exam Q's must be answered specifically his way, no BS no matter how correct it is. Class got 0/6 b/c correct answer not correct enough.
In my 4 years at university I have never had a class with so much work. Apparently he has forgotten that we have other classes and a life outside this class. I feel for the TA's who have to mark all that stuff that is handed in.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. He really loves to humiliate his students in front of the class and he is a cold person with no emotions. His grading criteria for exams are completely unfair and overall his lectures are not interesting whatsoever. He made me CRY once!!! Do not recommend taking this course!!!
Okay, this prof is really rude. When you even smile in class he will pick on you. He gets mad at least 1 person per each. Though some of his leactures were interesting, I thought he was rude otherwise. but he does talk as if he's better than most of the students, in other words he talks down to you.
Seriously, the most work for a single class I have ever taken. I have other classes, and a life outside this class. Take his class if you like extra and unnecessary work. I wish I dropped this class before it was too late. Worst.Class.Ever.
In my opinion Gordon Rose is not that bad of a lecturer. However, there are numerous faults which cause me to give him such a low grade. He talks with the monotonous voice of a dead man. He gets angry at the slightest hint of talk in his class. His class guidelines are vague and his TA's are no help. In short, do NOT take this course.
The class is brutal. Huge amounts of work which will eat up your life, and the exam's are under huge time constraints and marked strictly. If it wasn't for the TAs this class would be impossible.
The class is difficult, but the professor is fair and very helpful if your polite. Be nice to him and he'll be nice to you. Also don't talk in his class or he'll call you on it. Some people say he's mean for that, but honestly, it's understandable-he's got a lot to teach.
Do NOT take this course. It is absolutely useless. He adds a lot of extra work that is barely included on the midterm. If you enjoy having to do a two page paper EVERY week on top of doing 6 drafts of a paper on top of preparing for a debate on top of studying for exams. Then enjoy. Most people failed the midterm, and will probably fail the final.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!! 13 2-3 pg summaries due every sunday 11:59 pm. 6 drafts of the same paper. 3 abstracts about a paper you havent written. midterm: 50 minutes to write 1 eassay q, 12 short answers, 6 MC. final same format. 1 presentation. its an ENGLISH class not PSYC for those who think they are taking psyc ur not. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Took this course for B-Sci credits. Not bad that you get credits for that but the work load is ridiculous! weekly summaries, huge paper (40% of your grade), and his exams are VERY detail oriented. Midterm was same length as final yet you only had 50 min to write it. Hard maker, but if you aren't strong in sciences, okay for B-Sci credits.
Took this in summer. If you want to do well please listen to my comments. 1) DO NOT take a heavy course load with this course. Lots of weekly work and near the end it becomes quite hectic. 2) Get a TA you mesh with. Honestly if it doesn't work within the first class book it. 3)Find a paper topic you love because your going to spend 6 weeks with it.
Worst Prof Ever. Material irrelevant and boring. TA's are the biggest jerks ever and he ignores any complaint taken to him. Worst semester of my life.
WORST PROF EVERRRRRR!!!!!! he was so horrible. Unfair, rude, loads of useless unrelated materials and writing. If you miss a class you will be punished. Treats everyone like criminals. Unclear on what he wants us to write. Horrible horrible prof. this is the first time I have ever rated any profs and i feel the need to say how HORRIBLE he is.
WORST PROF. hands down. he was rude, hard to talk to, and had a huge ego. I went to talk to him once and he YELLEDDDDD at me. class would be ok with him as prof. MUST AVOID!!
ridiculous workload and a lot of tedious tasks each week. Professor was rude to students, e.g. wolf whistled to make us quiet. Do the work, you'll do fine, it's a shame people like this are allowed to teach and make ridiculous workloads for people with other courses, jobs, etc. it is 3 times the work of some other classes
Assignment criteria were unacceptably vague, and oversight of TAs was non-existent. Class felt like a creepy brainwashing session where the goal was to convince students of the importance of the course. Marks were definitely doctored, and were based more on how well you followed superficial structural requirements rather than content. Excruciating.
It's a hard class, with a tedious amount of reading. However, it's also the easiest A you'll ever get, if you simply do the work and make the changes your TA suggests in your writing.
12 500 word summaries. That's right 12. You gotta do one every week. Add on to the fact that the final paper is a 2000+ word response and a 50 minute mid term makes this one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. Also, you gotta debate the opposite side of your final paper. Do yourself a favor and take another Psyc course.
An unbelievable amount of written work, a weird assignment of term papers, exams where you have to regurgitate his lectures verbatim, this guy has an ego bigger than Montana! You use his text, guaranteeing him extra income all year long, and in person he's condescending and supercilious. Thumbs down.
I don't know what everyone is complaining about. Yes, it was a lot of work, but not an unreasonable amount. This is a writing intensive course, so it seems silly to complain about too much writing. He curves his midterm and final, so it also seems silly to complain about receiving bad grades in it. If you beat the class average, you're fine.
stupid teacher for my course u are require to buy 2 books one teach you how to write one shows arguments and debate on famous psyc experiments but the psyc experiment book isnt even in midterms and final while on the other hand the one teaches you hwo to write is. this is a psyc class not a english class if u want to learn pysc dont take this
hes courses has alot of workload but hes a good prof all his exams are mentioned in class and fair game if you know what hes talking about in lecture you good to go
Rose is clear and concise. I think a lot of his no-nonsense demeanor may be misinterpreted as malice in many of the other ratings here. The workload is heavy, yes, but not impossible. If you are expecting to memorize the "right answers" for later regurgitation, you won't enjoy his style. I'd take another course with Rose in the future.
This professor does not do anything. The TA are the weirdo kings/queens from psychology department, all of them freaks! The whole class is a set up, where you get horrible marks at the beginning and average around 60ish at the end. The class is mandatory for every psych major, so ...good luck! Advice: ummm... pray!
class=useless. summaries every week, ridiculous amount of work for the paper. ta's are useless. need to know WORD FOR WORD definitions for midterm and final. ta's give no feedback on any assignments. overall horrible class, prof is bitter, ta's not knowledgable.1 hr lecture 2 hr tutorial..so dumb. this is not a psyc course i didn't learn 1 thing.
Marking scheme seems to try to fail students. So many ways to lose marks for not doing things while not getting any marks for doing them (ex: no marks gained for in-class free writes, but max 11% penalty). My major complaint is unfair marking, none of it makes sense so you can't really appeal it. Heavy courseload; take during light semester.
I took this class and was amazed at how this professor values your ability to spew back what's in the textbook over your ability to understand the material. The midterm and final are nothing more than a test of how well you can memorize definitions. Though I still did well in his class, I felt that the way he grades assignments and tests was ridiculous in that you could lose points for not giving a word-for-word definition as is in the text.
-grammar is irrelevant, the summaries are pointless, too much work because its a 100 level class
He makes first year classes seem like 4th year classes. Doesn't help much and gets agitated when you ask questions. I would not recommend taking a class with him.
To anyone taking this course: DO the critical reading evaluations at the beginning that are not worth marks. Even if you don't do them well. I didn't do any and wrote great papers for 4 and 5 CRE but got 5/10 for both papers. If you just do them and try to do them well, you will get much better grades in the later CRE's. TA's will be your BFF's.
LOVED the TA!! she was so helpful. BUT, Professor marked REALLY HARD. I mean REALLY REALLY HARD. 2 page summaries every week due in webct. paper worth 40%. REALLY HEAVY course load. interesting topics, but a lot of work.
Not much interaction with him so not much to say other than he is clear on what the course is all about. So don't worry he isn't like some profs who speak gibberish. TAs do all the marking so your experience depends on who it is. Take this course in a light semester! There is much work involved but you can learn a lot about how to write good papers
Attending class is a must or else you will fail the exams as they are based on lectures. There is a lot of reading involved but it's not unbearable, just tedious since they are not on the exams. I personally felt this course was the hardest but putting in the effort will result in decent grades! I got an A because I worked hard.
More of a facilitator in Psyc 300, given the nature of the course, so it's hard to rate him fairly.. but I had no issues with him whatsoever. Seems like he does *a lot* of work to organize the course, so credit is due. A lot of ppl seem to complain about the level of difficulty in 300, but cmon.. put your back into it. embrace the challenge.
marks incredibly hard. First weekly assignment class average was 3/10. Weekly critiques worth 40% of your grade. Very difficult to get a high mark.
Firstly, Gordon didn't lecture or mark much work. He had guest lecturers come in and TAs marked the majority of assignments. My TA was awesome but marking schemes between TAs didnt seem consistent. Far too much work for 3 credits. Lectures a bit useless. CRE grading was a joke, and is worth far too much. (To justify lectures?) Time intensive course
heavy workload but doable- attend lectures to get 5% participation (writing your feelings about the week's lecture/readings) & post a couple things online to get another 5%. DO ALL WEEKLY SUMMARIES & take advantage of dropping your lowest 3 (probably your 1st 3) & watch your marks go up towards the end. paper fair- lots of chances to improve
The workload is intense and heavy. I recommend one less course if you plan on taking this course. While he is a smart man, I find he gets irritated when people ask questions or responds with in a condescending manner. Recommend doing the readings and analysis early. If you can get another instructor for this course, Take it!!
Gordon isn't really involved too much in this course (he gives 2 lectures & doesn't mark anything). My TA was very vague and inconsistent with his marking, I couldn't understand what he wanted from us!! The CRE weekly papers are such a joke and you spend way to much time on them for what they are worth. Don't take this with a full course load.
If you are not planning on majoring in psychology I suggest you take another class. Will it help you become a better skeptic? Sure. It is possible this course will help you become a better writer and will teach you how to form arguments well. However, it requires all of your time and effort. Think outside the box for your CREs + solid arguments.
Gordon doesn't really have much to do with the course or marking. He is pretty condescending so I wouldn't bother asking him much. Take advantage of your TA, keep asking them how you can improve your writing each week and you will probably end up doing well on the CREs (and the final paper).
He is by far one of the most clear/concise profs ever. The i clickers instead of the midterm was a great idea. The lectures are the same as the textbook but go to gain i clicker marks. Overall i found him to be a great prof and he paced the course well! Your experience in this course might also depend on TA, mine was god sent angel!
It wasn't the actual course that made it difficult, more the work load. Do all the CRE's, meet ALL the deadlines, and pay attention to what your TA tells you and it is possible to be successful in this course. You just have to do the work (ALL of it) and stay on top of it!! You really have to rely on the TA more than anything to be honest.
Gordon is one of the most amazing professors I have ever had. He is very interested in what students think during the course discussions. Yes this course had a very hard workload and the CRE's were hard but that is based more on the ta. If you have a bad ta then you will do badly in this class. I would love to take more classes with Professor Rose!
Although he pretty much has nothing to do with your grade in the course he is one of the worst and least helpful "profs" at SFU. Extremely condescending, rude and impatient... would never take a class with him again. As for the course, it is helpful in the end and mandatory but make sure you LOVE your TA. They will be the all or nothing for you.
Professor Rose is one of the most inspirational and motivating professors I have ever encountered. I took his psyc210 and psyc300 and I wish there was more classes I could take with him. Both these course are heavy in writing, especially 300W and I HATE writing, however, the fact that he is my favorite prof of all time should say something.
If you're a poor writer, you might learn something. If you already do well at writing, it is a waste of time. A good TA is useful but not essential (mine was poor but i still did well). This class takes up too much time and the CREs are a waste of time... even the TAs have no real idea on that one it seems! You HAVE to go to classes!!!!!
Not a good professor, alot of in class discussions, boring lectures. You have to go to lectures. The paper that is due is a pain to do. TA's arent very helpful. I would not take this class just for credits.
This course is not as bad as it seems!! However, the CREs were the hardest part of the course so make sure to bring out novel ideas and ask your TA for help. Overall, make sure to manage your time wisely and complete everything on time then you should be good to go.
If you're taking 300 with him, it doesn't really matter what he's like bc your TA does all the marking so you should be sucking up to them. But overall, I don't like Gordon's teaching style bc he's authoritarian, might have something to do with him having been a lawyer.
Just be ready to do work every week. Be prepare to read and writhe the CRE. Pick a topic you like and write it for the final paper.
This was the BEST course I had ever taken. It's not easy though because there is a LOT of reading and writing involved. People want him to tell them the right answers but there are no right answers. THIS is what teaching should be like. You're not in university to regurgitate facts you should be here to think for yourself. Follow his advice.
Dr. Rose definitely knows what he's talking about and that can sometimes come off as intimidating but by no means is he an unreasonable prof. He's very realistic. The course itself is heavy but that's expected from a writing course. Your TAs are your life support, and they're the ones who you should impress because they do all the marking.
This is the hardest, most time consuming classes I've taken BUT it has improved my writing & critical thinking skills more than any other class. Guidelines are clear, discussions are interesting, and you learn a lot. In the end, it's worth it because it is the most useful Psych course at SFU. You will never write a paper the same way again!
This class isn't structured to teach you a specific topic like other classes. You'll be improving on your writing throughout the course so be prepared to be writing A LOT. Weekly CRAs are tough to get a good mark on and are very tedious. The grades are scaled so it isn't too bad in the end.
He doesn't do anything in the class. His entire job consists of him introducing guest lecturers and moderating a class discussion. He is not a professor, teacher, or even lecturer. It is extremely unfortunate that he is the only one who offers the course. All of the real teaching is done in the tutorials.
Content is not too difficult because its project based. I've got a good TA so its fine BUT the lecture is terribly boring and useless.
Took PSYC 201 which was also taught by Dr. Rose. His teaching has substantially improved and he is much happier, funnier, and more engaged with students. Yes, you will hear many negative comments about PSYC 300W, but the class will change your life by giving you the skills you can use in future classes and also in the outside world.
I've been a bad writer all my life and this course has improved me greatly. I have learned so much about argumenting and critical analysis. For all the people who say Gordon doesn't do anything, he created this class. Without him, it wouldn't exist. My thought process completely formed into relativistic ways of thinking. I'm so inspired. Thank you!
when the course starts, it likes a GPA dropper because the grade is so strict. however, when you put efforts in it, this is an easy A course. Dr Rose is fine, but he has nothing to deal with the grade. Having a good TA and follow his/her guidance is everything. guest lectures are helpful but less matter with the writing training.
Gordon will try his hardest to make you feel dumb and useless because it suits his ego. He will often say that he's "not an expert in this field because I'm a lawyer, but..." Even if you contribute a lot in class, don't expect him to remember you or treat you like a human being. If you're late, he'll stop lecturing to ask you why.
Attend the lectures! Get the 5% for in-class writing! Also, the lectures are super interesting! The papers and CREs are tough, but you'll get the hang of it!
300 was 1 of my favorite classes. The set up Gordon has is really fun. Lots of papers (1 every week ). Lectures are cool and interesting. if you go to everyone and do a "free write" that's 5% right there. Lots of reading and writing. Learn to read and write critically. Be prepared for low grades but they will increase. No exam but a term paper
Clicker quizzes every class that are very difficult. No midterm, but the clicker quiz counts as a midterm. So you have to read the chapter every week in order to pass.
Your TA is your lifeline in this class. Lectures only matter for the extra 5% freewrite component. There are weekly essays and a term paper done in segments. Things get easier over time & Gordon is quite engaging and thought provoking but for your sake, don't take this with any other hard courses or you'll die. This course consumes your life.
He is actually a good educator and has good examples and stuff but somehow I just can't stay in his class because it gets so boring. For this class, your TA matters a LOT but back to Dr. Rose, he's actually a good teacher and a wonderful compassionate person if I may say so.. He seems intimidating but he's very nice really. Tough iClicker tho.
well educated but monotone while speaking. he has a very mean vibe to him. you need to go to all the lectures in order to do well on the quizes (did i mention there is one every single class?). you need to know content from both lectures and the textbook (posts his lecture slides online though). overall not horrible, but not engaging at all
I thought Gordon was a great prof and I enjoyed how differently the course is set up, it's really intended to challenge you and force you to learn. There is a TON of work in this class and you'll be working on papers almost every weekend, but in the end it'll be worth it. The grading scheme seemed a bit fishy to me though.
Gordon is the worst professor I ever had. He does not care about his students at all. He also very disrespectful towards other students about comments they made during class discussions. If he did not agree with you he made you feel stupid. I do not think he is fit to teach because of his attitude and lack of understanding towards his students.
I thought this course would be hard because of the workload. I'm good at writing & I have good time management, so I thought I'd be fine. Boy, was I wrong. The problem is the method of instruction/prof. He doesnt teach for students, he supervises for his own convenience. You will NEED a good TA and writing skills, you won't learn how to write here.
The lecturers for PSYC300W are guests, so I can't rate Dr. Rose on that. PSYC300W is poorly designed and sets students up for defeat. The numerous components leave even strong students scrambling for time. I poured more energy into this course than any other and will receive the lowest grade despite that. Hugely disappointed.
This course involve guest lecturers, so I can't really rate Gordon. But this class is a lot of work, don't take 4 course if you are planing to take this course. People in here say that it's hard, it is hard in away that it pushes you to think critically and we might not be use to that. But the material is not hard. I learnt a lot ,glad I took it.
Honestly a great and caring lecturer, I was surprised by the negative comments here but really if you work for it and you take the time to understand and appreciate the course and the instructor, you will do great. His lectures are also so entertaining with the savage undertones, but if you feel roasted then it means you probably need to catch up
Gordon thinks quite highly of himself. Slightly monotone in his lectures. Your TA will make you or break you. Mine was Maitland Waddell who was a miniature Gordon. He was very quick to make his students feel dumb and stupid. My critical thinking abilities have increased after this class. But, I really have to say we are set up to fail for this clas
PSYCH 300W was one of my favorite course at SFU. I don't understand all the negative comments. This class consisted of guest lecturers so I can't really rate Gordon. The class itself is not difficult but the amounts of work you need to put in this class is crazy. Stay on top of all the weekly reading and writing assignments and you should be fine.
People act like this class is impossible to do well in, but I put in minimal effort and got a B and I'm not the brightest... The weekly CRE'S are tricky, but you learn how to do them quickly! Attend every lecture (to get participation marks ), do your free-writes, online discussion, attend tutorials, pick a good thesis and you're good to go.
This course discusses a lot of concepts from AP psych/psych 100 + 102 so if you've taken that, it shouldn't be too bad. He posts lecture slides the day of lecture and his lecture slides are basically notes from the textbook, so I personally found it helpful to take notes after class by reading the lecture slides and the textbook at the same time.
PYSC 300W is not a difficult course, moreso it is a course with a very very large workload. The TA you have is your professor. Dr. Rose does not lecture and brings in guest lectures. Dr. Rose has the expectation for students to figure out how to improve their papers without a rubric so there's that.... Shout out to Shannon Wright!! Best TA in 300!
Having a good TA is everything for this course. My first TA tries to kill everyone by his non-sense grading: half students even got 0 on weekly CRE and the average is 1.7/10! Fortunately he left the class in the middle and we have a new TA, and at the end most of us got B and above. Gordon is doing nothing but asking other profs come and talk.
This class really isn't difficult so much as it's a butt load of work! The grading criteria is pretty unclear and assignments are graded using the same criteria throughout the semester, meaning that it's assumed that you will fail the first couple assignments. Use your TA, you can only improve and get a good grade by asking them for help.
Your TA will make or break you for this class, make sure to go and ask for feedback often so that you can improve on your weekly CRE's.
Very heavy workload. Involved freewrites, online discussions, weekly CREs, and the term paper (including exploratory paper, peer review, peer review response feedback, 1st submission, TA response feedback, final submission). All of which are for marks. Wouldnt recommend taking more than 3 courses while taking this course if you want a good grade.
He is hardly involved in the class... don't really know what his purpose of being there is besides introducing guest lecturers and calling out people to talk in class. He also isn't the nicest guy. Your TA will make or break you and the marking is all over the place. Don't throw away easy participation marks because they help.
If you can avoid him, you should. Lectures are extremely dry and monotone. He goes over important bits of the textbook, so it's a nice highlight of material - if you can stay awake. He is bad at answering questions/providing examples unless he planned them from before. He can be rude, but I lowkey find it entertaining.
Gordon is the worst professor I've ever had. He's not a reasonable person at all and very inconsiderate. He will make you hand in 1 assignment 3 different ways, and if you forget to hand it in 1/3 of those ways you will not get marks. Forget your last name on an assignment and you won't get marks either, despite all the hard work you put in.
Dr. Rose is a decent lecturer that is clearly very educated in his field. As far as the class goes, it has been the most useful class in the undergrad so far. There is an insane amount of work but if you put in a marginal amount of effort you can really benefit from this class.
There is absolutely no point to lecture and he is of no use to the class, but unfortunately if you want the 5% participation marks you are forced to go and you have to stay until the end. Your TA will make or break you. Overall, this class was a big pain but I did end up actually learning a lot and obtaining critical thinking skills I did not have.
TA is basically your teacher. Weekly CREs are difficult and grading inconsistent (depends on TA). However, even if your mark is low, if it's higher than average, you're good. Free writes and discussion marks worth doing but free writes force you to stay to end of lecture. Paper worth 50%, do all the components and you're good.
Unhelpful and frustrating. The course is supposed to teach us "critical thinking", but really it's just teaching us how to win an isolated game in which the only requirement is to satisfy the teacher's subjective desires despite it having no use in the real world. VERY unclear grading criteria and loads of work. Do not recommend.
The course content itself is really not the worst (despite popular belief). It's the course policies that get you. There is no mercy. Do not miss a deadline. Always submit to turnitin and canvas. Make sure you have all the components for your paper submissions (and clarify twice the requirements). I found the grading criteria to be unclear.
I found Gordon to be extremely disrespectful at times and unreasonable. I had proper documentation for not handing in the online portion of my final paper and he refused to excuse late marks. He is condescending and is not all that involved in the class. I understand the importance of deadlines, but there also needs to be a level of sympathy.
This course was the hardest course of my degree at SFU. Gordon is not a bad prof, but he is very old school. It really depends on your TA whether you get a good grade or not!! Ask for help and meet up w your TA to get more feedback. You need to devote approximately 10-15 hours for CREs. BUT trust me you will learn a lot at the end.
Super Tough course! But honestly, if you are on top of it and talk to your TA's for help, it's easy to be above average. The lectures are quite boring, the only thing that makes them interesting is discussions. But I do not feel like I learned much from the lectures, only the readings.
300W is simply a difficult class. Weekly CREs are difficult to adapt to, but become formulaic once understood. I learned so much, and became a more succinct and convincing writer. Advice: meet with your TA. Go through your CREs with a fine-toothed comb. Gordon does a fine job as an engaging lecturer.
Once they forgot to specify that we need to hand in a version of our paper with the TA's comments. It wasn't written anywhere so half the class didn't. He basically said it was our fault ("you were given clear instructions"... we WEREN'T though). Eventually he changed it when enough people complained but that's the kind of prof you're dealing with
terrible prof. unfortunate he is the only one who teaches PSYC300. got a fairly decent mark but he's still awful. Condescending to students, never wears a proper mic so if you are in the back good luck hearing him. Stuck in old ways, yet preaches need to be critical. TA's are your only hope of getting good grade, he is completely useless.
The worst prof i ever had. He doesn't care about his students at all. Ridiculous amount of readings and papers. His lectures are boring and useless, but has 5% participation mark. He's too strict about deadlines and wont even accept a paper thats 1 MINUTE late! I dont understand why sfu cant get another prof for this course.
this class is the definition of hell on earth. Take the worst professor known to mankind and combine that with the worst TA known to mankind (Florencia) and you have got Psyc 300W. It is not even a tough course in the sense that it is academically challenging and is pushing you to learn and do better. You learn absolutely nothing. HORRIBLE!
This class is what's wrong with the education system. You have got a prof that clearly is not passionate about teaching and even worse, is teaching his TA's to follow in his footsteps. He is disrespectful, arrogant, and guess what he gets to keep doing it. Is he going to change? No. So Psyc students, good luck, its going to be the worst course ever
for any student scrolling through these right now deciding whether to take this class, DONT. It is exactly as bad as these reviews say it is. Im telling you just put this course off as long as possible and pray someone else starts teaching it eventually. This class pushed me to change my major so if that doesn't tell you how bad it is idk what will
I came into PSYC 300W with the worst expectations, but the class surprised me. Gordon is incredibly caring and student-oriented. I think the class expectations are foreign to students who only have experience writing psyc literature reviews. I highly recommend taking writing-intensive courses in English and/or Philosophy before taking PSYC 300W.
This course challenged me immensely yet the results are worth it. I worked 2 jobs and commuted 4 hrs a day while taking this course (along with 2 other courses). Discipline yourself, take TA feedback seriously and don't take criticism to heart. Gordon brought different lecturers to teach students and I really appreciated that. He is wholesome.
Gordon is a weird one. His lectures are so intense with information it is honestly overwhelming. He gives thorough lectures but a lot of the time the information goes over everyone's heads. A big thing with him is that he doesn't care about his students, he never taught me anything I learned this entire course through my TA. Avoid if you can.
Gordon is so sweet and caring towards his students. Great lecturer. He doesn't deserve all the flack he gets. He puts a lot of effort into his course and really cares about providing a great learning experience for his students. Just don't be lazy when taking this course! Why be in school if you don't try or apply yourself?
If you have a good TA, you will do fine in this class. I liked Gordon up until his final exam which was 60 minutes for 60 questions and was HARD (the average was 59%). He also told students he would scale the class, and ended up not scaling at all. Thank goodness for students who pressured him into making the exam 20% because it was originally 40%
Dr Rose is very straightforward and fair, but his lectures are dry and they pretty well copy the textbook. I ended up not going to lectures and just studying the textbook.
I'd rate his teaching at about a B (when he is teaching; half of the course is guest lecturers). But his attitude is what makes him stand out. He's often rude and patronizing to his students. Beware of the course policies. No leniency, and if he makes a mistake, he'll still blame you for it. Assignments are arbitrary and teach you nothing.
Who you have as a TA is really important for this course as how you're graded depends on what your TA is looking for in your paper, but the papers do get easier when you find out the structure of it and what your TA wants. Gordon is condescending when asking for help (Extensions, questions) and will also call on students for class discussions.
This is more for the class itself than Dr. Rose. Dr. Rose was alright but seriously messy tutorials and unfair grading throughout the entire class. Don't understand why some profs make it impossible to get a good grade as if it's motivational when it's just disappointing. Dr. Rose provides pretty good online lectures although it can be quite boring
TA runs everything. Listen and incorporate EVERYTHING TA mention into your writing, even if you don't agree. The course has 90 tasks to complete, follow the syllabus CAREFULLY. Gordon over complicated this course and is jerk about it; he is one overall. Dissect good CRE's to start, mimic and adjust based on feedback. Play the course, good luck.
Avoid at all costs
Rude prof with high expectations of students. During a pandemic, I think we need to adjust content and methods, and that was not accomplished here. One paper due every week at least, usually two though. Rely on your TA, he is not approachable. I also think the course could be structured differently to 1 paper/week. wish it was in-person.
all bad things you heard about him? all true. if you have any other choice, choose the other choice. i would never pick him as an instructor willingly.
For a critical thinking class your TA does not critically think when grading, but lets their personal opinion determine your grade because they don't agree with the premise of your argument, so they disregard all evidence you give. They will not just insult your WORK, but will slight YOU when you ask for help. They're so toxic, rude and patronizing
Terrible TA's who do not want to help, office hours are useless for both gordon and the ta. Wish there was a way to formally complaint against them at sfu because this is a terrible course that sets u up for failure. Not only do the TA's not want to help but they are extremely patronizing and toxic. no one understands their grading/ what they want
Gordon yelled at one of the students at one point. The lectures are discussions of the readings and did not teach any course material. TAs definitely make or break your grade. My TA was very rude, toxic, patronizing, and acted like talking to me was a pain. She (Yan) was not very helpful or supportive and the TAs do not give clear instructions.
This class gives out too much work during a pandemic, and I felt like I would have enjoyed the class if the prof was not so horrible. My TA was super helpful, but she was a tough marker. Gordon needs to work on his people skills and learn how to better communicate with his students because chile this is not it. Arrogant and disrespectful :(
Class was terrible for a 3rd year course - marked as if it was a phd like ??. TA's give you your whole grade, did not make contact w gordon. DO NOT take Yan as your TA, she is so rude and does not help at all during office hours or in class. she got mad when i asked for help and did not help at all. She marks incredibly hard as well which is unfair
The amount of work in this class is ridiculous. It's also quite discouraging because you put so much work and effort into the assignments but ultimately do poorly because the marking is so hard. The averages were very low. Everyone mentions how their TA was horrible, but I had Sherene and she was super sweet and helpful. Still a hard marker though
this course is very difficult with a minimum a weekly paper while working on a term paper aswell. TA's carry this course and aslong as you have a good TA you're fine. however necessarily rude to the class at times which extremely unprofessional, do not recommend contacting him, just ask your TA . good luck!
I don't mind him and I enjoyed the course for what it was. People definitely make it sounds worse than it is. He likes logic and people seeking improvement, so if you approach him like that then you'll be fine. However, most of the class is done by the TA's so you wouldn't interact much with him.
this guys actually a goof lol. TA's are even bigger clowns. Idk who hires these gus but rip lol catch this L fam if i see you outside im squaring up g
The class you can't avoid as a psych major. The final paper was fine but CREs were definitely gross. Its never gonna be clear what you are going to write and what is expected.
Gordon aims to fail his students, I don't know how he is still a professor. The TAs do all his work for him and he is so rude! This class was the worst and brought my average down quite a lot. do not take this course if you don't have to.
Rose was just the rudest prof I've ever had. So disrespectful when it came to students. Not only that but he failed to tell the entire class the same information.
So part of this course is based on participation, and during a discussion a student was making a valid comment about the material and Gordon weirdly aggressively cut her off and angrily told her we had to move on. I felt so bad for her as she was so kind in return, thanking him, and he was so rude back, verge of screaming. These people need help.
He's the worst !!! Don't take any class with him
The only good thing about this course was my TA who was an absolute goddess and the only reason I didn't cry myself to sleep every night. There was a huge research project for which there was no criteria and the TA's didn't even know what was going on half the time. Don't even get me started on the mess that was the final.
A crap show. Midterm was full of typos, trick questions and so was the final. Don't even listen to his lectures, just read the textbook. The class average was crap. If you can avoid him, please do. One review said "he is not as bad as ppl think" - he is. I listened to that comment and I took 201 with him. Biggest mistake.
I guess I'll play devil's advocate here. I will say he's a bit of a dry lecturer, but in his defence, the material is quite dry itself. Further, I found the exams and projects were well graded. That being said, if you are a self-directed learner such as myself, I found great success in reading the text and using lectures as supplementary.
A very dry lecturer (although it is research methods, so don't expect anything super interesting). The final research project was cool but everything else wasn't great. What bothered me was his lack of communication, his lack of effort and the overall refusal to clarify criteria. He had a very "figure it out yourself" attitude.
Honestly, one of the worst professors I have had at SFU. He's notoriously bad at teaching, inflexible, and stuck in his old ways. I was prepared to work hard, but the professor makes it nearly unbearable. This course is hard enough without a professor that refuses to take in account student well-being and safety, particularly during the pandemic.
Although Dr. Rose is a tough professor, he cares about what you are learning. PSYC 300W is a challenging class by nature, and you will have to keep up with the material and be proactive about your learning. Sometimes what is demanded can be a little confusing, but your TAs will direct you well. This class will make you tougher and a better writer.
Not a bad course but you definitely need to work for your grade. Time consuming weekly writing assignments, discussion, paper but each weekly writing assignment is on different topics not boring at all but some readings are dull. Use the feedback from your TA, go see them essentially your life line in the course. treat it as two course
Worst class ever. TAs can't even use proper English in tutorials they grade completely arbitrarily, average on first paper 3/10. No consistent grading profile. Prof is no help, egotistical and actively puts students down in lecture. Adjusts grades unfairly so that 25% As, 50% Bs, rest Cs/Ds/Fs, no matter what grades students actually earned.
You hear so many horror stories of this class, but really its not that bad. Take it with lighter courses, and do the readings early and get the CRE's done early in the week. They really do want to see you improve from the first papers. It is really the TA's that matter, and they got a bunch of new TA's who I heard were pretty good.
Unclear grading on the most difficult writing assignments given every week. Virtually no guidance on how to succeed in the course besides him saying "don't fight the course or it will fight you". There are no tests, no need for notes - lectures discuss the past week's material..., yet if we do not go we lose 5% of our total mark. One word: unfair.
Same amount of research & reading required on bigger papers needed on weekly papers on top of bigger papers they may assign u in the same week. Read textbook & 2 canvas posts weekly too. No consideration for ur other classes at all. Work doesnt pay off either. Class avg is 3/10. Dont let no tests fool u. Avoid this prof and syllabus at all costs.
Only so much u can say in a 350 character count. No grading criteria, lots of readings research & papers, unfair marking (30% average), rude unprofessional prof and TAs, lectures dont give u anything useful when its summarizing readings u did the week prior & no tests but have to attend for thought exercises worth like 5% that u hand in at the end.
I'm convinced all the good ratings are coming from gordon sitting at home. Plus no way that many people are getting A's. Class average is well below 50 and the TAs wont even listen to what gordon thinks is a 10/10 paper. "Um yea not even his so called perfect paper would get perfect" um it should he's in charge of how u should be marking.
The bottom line is this class takes a lot of work. My other classes suffered. Dr. Rose is kinda irritable but straightforward. It's graded completely on a curve, so the only way to get an A is to score in the top 25% of the class which can be very stressful.
Dr. Rose is basically irrelevant for this class; your TA will be your 1st line of contact and they'll be grading everything you do. Lectures are useless because they focus on the past week's content that you'll have already written a 600-word paper on. SO many assignments and grading criteria are VERY vague (be ready to do whatever your TA says).
I've just taken his class and I'm already freaked out. 'Don't fight this course because it will fight you back.' The workload is intense so definitely choose easier classes in the term when you choose this. The TAs said his CREs were rubbish and that he would score a 2/10 yet none of them have the guts to say that to him. Good luck!
I actually don't have anything against Gordon. Attending his classes are pretty much completely useless. TAs are the ones you have to deal with. This course is super time-consuming and demotivating. Try not to cry.
Nothing against Rose in particular, TAs do most of the grading, attendance is mandatory since theres in-class-writes, but the lecture is useless otherwise. Most time consuming class I've ever taken and no one really understands the purpose behind the class. but at least its curved because you're gonna get a 3/10 on ur first essay
As a former student and later former TA in his writing intensive courses, I can say there are at least 2 sides to how Dr. Rose developed those courses and trained his TAs to teach students how to think via writing. Still, I can also summarize my experience as follows: Tough courses mold tough minds; and thorough writing shows thorough thinking.
gordon is retiring so i wont have to take him again, but this is my first experince with a teacher who does no teaching at all and HEAVILY relies on other students to do our markings as well as making unrealistical deadlines/reqiurements with CRES and term paper. overall wost class ever and gordon, dont let the door hit you on the way out :)
To be honest, this class taught me SO much about writing only because of my own hard work and my TA. UTILIZE YOUR TA or you will not succeed + don't fight this course. Take a lighter course load (1 less class than usual), and be prepared to work hard. Try to eradicate the negative mentality or it'll eat you away. DON'T MISS TUTORIALS OR UR DONE FOR
First and foremost, the title of this course is misleading as it is much more about argumentative writing than critical thinking. How you do in this course reflects not on you as a student but on your TA's explaining and grading ability/style. Rose's grading system is odd, and structured to make you lose marks whenever possible. Awful experience.
Lectures are useless and you learn nothing, but mandatory for the 10% participation/in-class reflections. Be prepared for the worst, the course is brutal with weekly papers that require lots of research on top of the required readings. Tutorial attendance is a must since your TAs will do all the marking and teaching.
Lectures were useless. Ppl can disagree, but this course wasn't as difficult as ppl claim it to be. Stay on track, be original and think outside the box and I guarantee u will do good. The CREs were overwhelming at first, but it will get easier once u get used to it. Definitely take lighter courses if you're taking this class.
It's impossible to fail this course unless you absolutely didn't complete a single assignment or submitted garbage work. As long as you try and give it your all, you will fall in the B range. If you submit original work that encourages others to discuss your ideas, you will be in the A range. This course was way easier than PSYC 260
