Yapps A lot
Very monotone. Lectures are very boring. Not engaging.
talks about the most random stuff all lecture, speaks in incomplete thoughts, and SO HARD to understand anything she says
I do not recommend this professor at ALL!! She speaks nonsense the whole lecture and asks a bunch of questions that I'm not sure if they even make sense. We don't even know if we need to take notes on these said questions or if they'll be on the test. She also stays on the same slide for like 20 minutes and in one lecture we get like 6 slides done!
just a no, im sorry but her classes are just terrible, i stopped going :(
I understand the disappointment from the majority of the students in the class. she always seems confused about what she is saying which stresses the rest of us. However, it is understandable, as this is her first time teaching at uOttawa. I don't go to her lectures anymore, teaching myself and hope she gets better at her job for future students.
Rambles on and on. I have no idea what the actual important points are. learning objectives don't relate to the lecture. Asks advanced questions for a first year class. I listen to the lectures on 2X speed in the off chance something relevant and coherent is mentioned. +online textbook with content completely separate from the in-class work!
One of the most unprepared profs this year, keeps adding random slides for some reason, without telling us! Very ignorant and probably thinks it isn't a big deal but already worked on previous slides and have to copy new ones in one by one. Also random pauses and stuff while teaching as if she doesn't know what she's talking about.
Super monotone and talks in circles about random nonsense. often times mumbles under her breath questioning her own thoughts. There is never organized ideas in her classes, absolutely no idea what the midterm will contain
Difficult to follow along to lectures. She mumbles and leaves thoughts unfinished. She updates slides without telling us when we annotated prior versions. Shows her lack of preparation. She also spends half the lecture going over slides from previous lectures. It is however her first year teaching & I hope she improves over the years :(
Changed my life.
Can't bring myself to go to this class because she's so boring. Talks about random things not even on the slides so we only get a handful of slides done per class. She also adds additional slides AFTER SHE HAS TAUGHT THE LECTURE. If you don't have a good intention span don't take this class. Also made us buy a $50+ online for mandatory homework.
Talks way too much&stays on the same slides for the WHOLE CLASS! I haven't learned anything from this prof. not sure why we are making these PhD students teach when they haven't gotten proper training yet. I stopped going to the lectures because they are complete waste of time. Can't believe Im spending money on this class when I'm teaching myself.
slides and lectures are completely unorganized, impossible to tell what info is actually important. spends way too long on trivial things and and sometimes straight up makes students read off the slides out loud like its elementary school. take anyone else. hope she gets better
I feel bad writing a low review, but her lectures are honestly so difficult to attend. She isn't good at following and presenting slides. It seems like she doesn't know what she's talking about. We have such an expensive textbook and don't even know how to use it or what to study. Hopefully, she improves :( it's hard to teach yourself everything.
Trails off when she's teaching a ton. Often sounds like she doesn't know what she's talking about. I kind of feel bad, but this class is truly brutal to sit through. She is constantly changing up the slides and editing them after class. If you wanna work from home? Too bad the zoom isn't uploaded until wayyy after the class is over. Good luck.
The mandatory textbook has nothing to do with what is lectured. Bad lecturer and consistently unprepared! It's her first year teaching here at uo but not her first year teaching ever. She seems like she has not received the proper training to teach this class. Hopefully she improves, but do not take her if given the choice.
There are simply no words to describe how infuriating it is to attend her lectures and walk out with absolutely no new knowledge. Not to bash her degrees or wtv, but she comes across as really unknowledgeable when she lectures. She leaves every though incomplete and speaks about the most irrelevant points all class.
Her slides are not good and she how she writes them seems like she's not even sure the information on there is correct herself
She is ridiculously disorganized, runs on and on about irrelevant topics, changes her slides after the lecture and does not explain anything clearly. I'm paying a grand for this class just to teach myself the content, can't wait to see the exam :/
she's basically the "no more than one unmarketable tomato" meme on the internet.
Lowkey shes just super unsure of herself during lectures and doesn't seem to understand what's going on. Most unprepared I've ever felt from a professor... maybe she should think about switching professions.
as respectfully as possible i hope she hers better because this level of teaching is just unacceptable
I think she's one of my worst teachers in my entire education! She always looks unsure of what she's about to say, which doesn't help at all when trying to focus on difficult concepts. Her presentation slides are a mess too, and there is not a single glimpse of logic when she jumps between concepts, making it impossible to connect the dots.
She is ensure about what she is saying, quiz was extremely brutal . By the way she said that she taught in u of Tehran for 15 years . Although Shen seems that her first year in teaching maybe her TA is better in teaching
If you thought Rundle or Delcourt was bad, you're in for a treat. This class is nothing but a mess and she has no direction. The quizzes and mandatory textbook also have NOTHING to do with what she says in class. Basically you're on your own and good luck cause she makes no sense. Petition to bring back delcourt to teach this course PLSSSSS...
Good luck you're going to need it
People are too tough on her. This is a boring course by itself and she is trying her best to make it interesting. She has areas she needs to improve on, but her lecture style isn't as horrible as many make it seem. The quiz was decent and the difficulty level was expected due to it being open book. Midterm will decide how fair she is as a prof.
Lectures are so disorganized and super boring. It is not simply the content itself but the way she delivers it is awful. She speaks in a monotone voice and sometimes mumbles which makes it difficult to follow along. Slides are full of spelling mistakes with minimal information so you dont even know what you're supposed to be studying for the exam.
Her teaching is absolutely unacceptable for the amount of money we are paying in tuition fees. I truly hope she improves or something changes.
worst professor I have encountered. Expectations for exams not clear whatsoever. Lectures are unbearable, she mumbles and asks questions to students without providing the answer. The majority of students no longer attend lectures.Horrible and disorganized course .
She isnt all bad but she's definitely hard to follow along with. The big thing is that she isn't clear with what she is saying. She is new and trying her best, she has review sessions and wooclap questions, but the lecturing itself doesn't help you gain insight on what the exams and quizzes will focus on. I think/hope she will get better tho!
people rating are way too tuff on her here. the course in general is boring and just highschool material. she wants to make sure we understand little details (rare for most profs). the open book quiz was very fair if you actually study and read the textbook. plus she provides over 40 review questions for additional practice before the midterm.
She is very approachable and will thoroughly explain any concept in depth if you ask her and go to her office hours. Her tests are more than fair for people who show up to class, engage with her and study her lectures in powerpoint view. Enough review is provided, people complain about her because they want the prof to force-feed them the content
Her slides are so unorganized and her learning goals do not line up with her slides, doesn't have good explanations sometimes have to go on google for an explanation bc it's hard to understand what her slides are saying. Slides almost feel like they're out of order and it gets confusing when she goes on about a topic for multiple slides. Dont take.
The information in the lecture slides is so simple and basic compared to the types of questions she asks on quizzes. She expects you to makes these complex and far-fetched connections that she doesn't even bother to go through in class. Talks about specific topics in class and skips over a bunch. Terrified for the midterm.
I know this is her first semester teaching here but the slides are awful and all over the place and expectations are unclear. The first quiz had absolutely nothing to do with her lectures and was unessasarily difficult imo. Class is extremely boring and not even worth it to go as she just blabbers the whole time on a few slides.
She definitely improved over the semester. People are too harsh on her. Quiz 1 was wild, and the midterm was definitely something but overall, she's doing her best and I can't fault her for it.
Her lectures are boring but I bet the students leaving such harsh reviews are the same that can't keep their mouths shut during the entire class.
Okay many people said she isn't the best as this is her first time teaching but I'll be honest she is actually a very good prof. I listened to her recordings in 1.5x speed, and she makes sense. She is very knowledgeable, cares about us learning the material for long term. You might get frustrated, but to succeed, you need to sit down and study it!
So dry and unnecessarily hard
Information on slides and in class is very basic compared to the quizzes and midterm where the questions are very complex. Classes are very boring and half the time students are told to read slides for her to the whole class.
THIS WOMEN HAVE TO BE WATCH, most her time is spent on wooclap, the rest on bombard of information, she teaches like where in 4th year's. I understand this her first year teaching but being a guinea pig in her first teaching was not very pleasant, hopefully she gets better.
I find the lectures incredibly difficult to understand and it doesn't help that the slide decks are terrible. She uses lengthy complex examples to explain a relatively simple concept. She is also not clear about what we are expected to know from these examples and once when asked what we needed to know from one example she replied "nothing" :/
feels like i've unlearnt things I already knew with the way she teaches
Awful slides with no detailed information, yet she expects highly detailed responses for evaluations. No textbook to read from and no useful information on the slides whatsoever. The lectures are unbearable to sit through and only 30 out of 300 students ever attend them because of how awful she teaches. No clear outline for exams in the slightest.
I think ill fail the final, shes super unpredictable, anyone willingly taking her, rip...I think more than 90% of the class dont get her with the other 10% leaving good comments in here :')
every1 leaving neg comments like they made the course. have you guys tried i dunno.. studying? night before exam and you think that by leaving your sad pitiful energy here and blaming the prof your grade will change... sad.
Yes, she did improve over the semester. No, the improvement wasn't enough. As frustrated as I am by this course, I'm more frustrated by the "just study" comments. The prof has a lot of faults - she is unorganized and unclear. Lectures were poor aids to the slides - please just explain the concept and stop going in circles. Mcqs are fair though.
Teaches a 1st year course like it is a 4th year one. Spends most of the class making examples that are convoluted and aren't pertinent to the class content. Lecture slides lack a lot of info. Tough grader and makes exam questions very detailed. Take this class with Delcourt if you can. If not watch lectures at 2x and start studying forthefinalnow.
Despair. Lamentation. Depression.
Her teaching style was bare slides, an excuse of a textbook and Wooclap. She just threw out a topic and asked us to deduce what it meant and move on. People saying to "just study it" clearly do not understand that everyone learns differently. Full-time students should not have to teach themselves an entire course, especially not 1st years.
Made the final super fair and included past and familiar questions. Nice prof and allows for lots of other opportunities (quizzes, Smartbio) to help bring your mark up, not just exams. If you email you, she replies fast and is helpful and kind.
Prof. Hassan-Zadeh was very disorganized and didn't seem to know what she was talking about in class, almost appeared to be seeing the slideshow's for the first time herself. Overheard her say that the deferred final exam was going to be much harder, which is just mean.
Requires super specific responses on SA questions + harsh marker on them. DO NOT take this class if you don't have to.
She talks too fast! Too many PowerPoint slides/lectures. Uses a lot of diagrams but few words to explain concepts on slides. Think it is not all her fault - the department is toxic! The material is too advanced for a first-year course. Again, set by department. She seems very intelligent - but think it would be better if she taught in French.
Note to Prof.- hope you read this. Sorry about the reviews. Tips to improve - reduce slides to max 12 slides per class Decide on a textbook - use that textbook and those diagrams, assign reading Do not add extensions to lectures about things not required - waste study time Slow down, talk half speed, you have an accent - allow for pauses Good luck
Harsh marking by the department in general
Don't take this course with this prof
I like cell biology, well used to like it, but she kinda made me hate it. Lectures were all over the place and she doesn't hold back on the midterms, same with the marking of said midterms. I feel like she is way better than this because 1140 with her was not ideal.
Literally the worst professor I've had. Does not care about students, makes the exams so so hard and impossible. Lectures are also all over the place. Someone should review her resume smh
She is a horrible professor. Her lectures are very dry and she reads directly from the slides. Her slides and lectures in general are very unorganized.
I feel bad bc she seems sweet but the lectures were sooo boring. For the few lectures i attended, she spent half the time reviewing the past lecture and asked students way too much questions. She would also keep adding new slides/info to past lectures. The exams were hard, u def have to study a lot, and some questions covered things she only said.
Horrible horrible horrible! Stay away! Honestly not sure how the university is allowed to hire people like this. She doesn't teach and doesn't care about her students!
Impossible to follow along with lectures and the insane amount of slides, the lectures were all over the place and it was difficult to stay on top of everything because of this. You're graded on only one midterm and a final, both of which were absolutely brutal in terms of grading. She is a new prof here so I am hoping this year she will improve :(
I'm almost done with the course, and I think people are overreacting. Those who found the midterm too complex likely didn't study properly, as everything was covered in the slides. My top tips: use flashcards, explain concepts to someone, and answer the learning outcome questions at the end of her slides (she reuses them in exams). She do be yappin
Lectures are so boring and impossible to sit through. Slides are chaotic and unclear. Midterm grading is very harsh- if you don't write exactly what she wants 0 points for the question. Avoid her!
I was worried because of her other ratings. I'm almost done the class and I can say all her ratings are accurate. Her classes are hard to follow and she talks about a single diagram for too long. At first everyone was in class but by the end the class was empty as it was pointless to show up because she doesn't teach. Avoid if you can!
Would not take her again or recommend her to anybody. Talks to fast, and the only thing that happens during her class is her reading off the slides. It is difficult to follow through her information. Her tests are not that bad if you study for them, but don't rely on coming to class if you're willing to “learn” something from her.
I took BIO1140 with her in person. The course is easy, and the grading is fair, but attendance was low in her class because people couldn't listen to her. The slides were vague, and I had to use ChatGPT to understand all the material. The teaching style made it hard to understand concepts. don't waste time, just study the textbook it much better.
It is absolutely disgraceful that this professor is allowed to teach at any school. I cannot take how she goes on a side rant for 20 minutes in her slideshow (including pictures and notes) and finishes off her rant by saying that it isn't included in the course and that we are now out of time in the lecture. DO NOT TAKE EVER
She's alright. You do not need to attend these lectures slides are posted along with lecture recordings. It's hard to understand what she is saying which makes it so hard to take notes. She goes on so many random side talks that do not matter. Does has 3 online quizzes tho that are open book and easy A's adds up to 26% of you final grade.
she is so hard to follow along with as she just yaps about things, very specific and hard grader on the short answer questions, overall a bad prof avoid if you can
Her slides are bare and her lecture recordings unhelpful. Would not take again she makes everything needlessly complicated.
This teacher is the epitome of having no passion, no drive, and no motivation to watch students succeed in her class. Her slides are sloppily thrown together using confusing diagrams from the textbook as her main source of information. She hardly had any of her own explications and when asked questions struggles to relay useful information. Avoid
She simply doesn't care for her students. The exam was fair but most stuff she put we had never talked about in the class. Wouldn't recommend for anyone too take her
She is not good at teaching at all. She is very unclear and not concise when explaining a topic. She can go on tangents where she talks about random stuff we don't know need to know. She is very specific when grading long answers, not flexible. Do not take her if possible.
Nightmare of a course, nightmare of a prof. Tried to give her benefit of the doubt after reading her reviews but nope- failed both the midterm and final. She really doesn't hold back & barely even cares about her students. Only reason I passed the course is the lab portion. Avoid her at all costs. Lost my motivation & will to live after this course
If you care about your time, marks, and passion for biology, then just DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!
I took BIO1140 course in person.Honestly it's not a hard course. Many things is high school review. Her teaching is so bad that I even forget things I know. I had to teach myself everything before the final exam. Her slides are very bad. Only thing good about this course is the labs. My advice is do the practice quizzes and short answers she posts
If you have a choice, DO NOT pick her. The first midterm was crazy hard, and the final exam did not focus on the main ideas like GPCRs, RTKs, etc... Included topics we did NOT go through in class or any of her slides. STAY AWAY FROM HER she will end your GPA
The reviews are exaggerating a bit. She's kind and willing to explain things if you don't understand. However, like everyone said, her lectures are very disorganized and boring. It's difficult to focus or understand the topic in class. The slides are messy and the images are very small. Her exams focus on random details and not the main picture.
She's a nice person but isn't the best professor. Please don't waste your money and buy the textbook just do the free trial we didn't even use it. Her lectures are disorganized and very dull and it's sometimes hard to follow along. Her midterms/finals are fair tho they're not bad but very tough grading. She is nice tho to help out students.
what the hell was that final. gives a free 25% with quizzes though which was helpful.
Her teaching might not be great but she is so sweet if you actually go to her office she will explain everything to you. He exam was really hard though. Keep in mind her lecture rooms were empty almost no one attended.
I'm ACC falling asleep
She seems to know what she's talking about but the lectures are insanely slow. I've spent far more time listening to her speak on tangents that have little/nothing to do with course content than I have taking notes on relevant topics. Reading her slides and the textbook on your own time is necessary.
Dr. Hassan-Zadeh is a great professor who is always there to help. Hints during class!! You must take in consideration that she has only taught 2 semesters in Canada so far, don't be so harsh and understand her situation. It's clear she knows her stuff. Slides cover everything you'll need. Stay up to date and you'll be fine. Regrades are helpful!
Very bad professor. Hard lectures and always reads off the slides. Very hard tests and tough marker.
She's a really nice prof but her teaching could use some work, I understand it was only her 2nd semester teaching here so I guess it really isn't her fault. Her slides are bare most of the time and are kinda difficult to understand, her lecture recordings are also not good quality. Midterm and quizzes were okay, final exam was unpredictable though
She seems like a nice person, but her teaching is all over the place. The midterm and the final exams covered extremely specific concepts instead of focusing on the general principles. It felt like she wasn't even trying to evaluate the understanding of the course, but to try and weed out students by using extremely specific topics.
Midterm was not that difficult, and gave 25% free marks from quizzes. Final was horrific.
Dr. Vahideh seems like a sweet person but most people agree her lectures are boring, disorganized, and pointless. I did not go at all after midterms and chose to study the slides posted instead. There were 3 quizzes online to help raise your grade and the midterm was fair; however, the exam had irrelevant questions and was unwarranted. Good luck
She is a nice professor in the sense of a person, but that final was so violating that me sitting here writing this review gives me rectal pain. I don't know if our marks were simply too high for the faculty and she received some guidance to change that and got over zealous, but there was no need to make 6/8 questions on the final about RTK.
Take any class taught by her to tank your gpa
She gets off topic really easily, which really was one of the things I didn't like about this prof.
Dr. Vahideh is kind but struggles with organization and focus in her lectures. While the quizzes helped boost grades, the exams included irrelevant questions and her grading was very strict, requiring overly specific answers. Her teaching style could use improvement in clarity and structure.
Okay so the semester just started so I'm not exactly sure how her grading works, however, I do not recommend for anyone with a sane mind to take her class. She goes off topic all the time, yaps too much, and doesn't seem to know what she's talking about ever. She's quite difficult to understand as well, takes long pauses and mispronounces words..:(
My sincerest apologies to anyone who takes this class. The prof is a nice person but midterm and exam grading scheme will make you tear your hair out. Lectures aren't worth attending, just pick a god and pray. Bless the labs and online quizzes that allowed me to pass.
do not take bio 1140 with her, spare yourself the trouble. She has learning outcomes at the end of each powerpoint, which you'd think would be a good guideline to know for exams but no, she had the most random hyper specific questions for the whole midterm, it's impossible to study for something so unpredictable. Regretting my life choices
I have to agree with the other reviews. Despite giving her a fair chance, her explanations were unclear, and I ended up teaching myself. The learning outcomes were almost pointless, and she doesn't use the textbook for exams. This class completely killed my interest in bio—avoid it unless you're already solid in the subject.
This professor is not good and the midterm was terrible, I have never failed anything before but her midterm was the first thing I have failed. Absolutely terrible.
I failed the midterm. And the CLASS AVERAGE WAS 53%. Most people failed and some barely passed. If I was you never take that class with this prof. SHE IS HORRIBLE
The best thing I can say about her is that she seems nice, and does put effort in.However, her lectures are inane. She rambles about topic that are a) not relevant or b) extremely specific, while neglecting more important, big-picture content.
This course covers important content, too bad the prof has no clue how to teach it. Lectures are off topic rambles full of irrelevant info that never shows up on exams. To pass, you have to teach yourself everything because her lectures are background noise. No structure, no clarity and 0 chance you'll leave the lecture feeling even a bit smarter.
terrible lecturing, very softspoken and rambles on and on just like ChatGPT.
I thought the other comments for over-exaggerating. spoiler alert!!! they're not!!! she seems like a nice person but is horrible at teaching, does not make clear lecture slides, and makes the content extremely uninteresting. there's literally no reason a first year bio class should have such a low average. people didn't even do THIS bad in physics.
she is a boring professor but the midterm was practically copy and pasted from her provided study material. the grading is tough but that is done by TAs, not dr hassan-zadeh. i think people just dont take biology seriously and do poorly in the class, blaming it on her as a scapegoat. study hard and you can do well on at least the multiple choice.
They just ramble on and on and dont explicitly say the main points. Not considerate of notetakers.
she will just read off her lecture slide. not specific on what you should focus more on. just keep talking about not important stuff. the grading was strict, but it was done by TAs, so it was not her fault. I would say do yourself a favour and avoid her. She is a good person, but I can't say the same thing about her teaching methods.
Haven't finished the course yet, but she really sucks, please avoid the class if you can.
Was it hard, yes it is. However she gives a lot of free grades, for instance, 3 quizzes worth 25% of the class are the easiest thing that can be done, aced them all so here it's already 25%, labs are easy too, another 25%, midterm was hard, but it's doable. People hate cuz they don't put effort into studying, going into my finals with A+ so far.
I never wore a seat belt while driving to university in hopes of NOT MAKING to her class!
Poor lectures with little to no substance or guidance for extremely strict grading and wildly random and unpredictably convoluted exam questions. Luckily there are free marks - not enough to save face for this prof unfortunately.
It's been almost 2 years since I took her course, I'm just here cuz I just got a traumatic flashback of how bad it was. Yeah don't take her if you can. She's terrible :)
Nice but horrible at teaching. Lectures dive into diagrams with no labels, no words, only verbal explanation (skipped any writing). Midterm had super specific questions that nobody understood. Midterm average was 53% and she said that was better than others. She will ramble incoherently about things. Impossible to memorize. I'm a bio major btw.
I found her lectures to be extremely boring and also very hard to follow. I felt like there wasn't a lot of direction. The midterm was hard and I didn't feel like it was very fair considering the actual class content, you had to memorize super trivial diagrams from the slides to pass. The average was around 50. Thankfully, the quizzes were easy.
Very approachable and gives quizzes worth 25% which are really good grade boosters. Her multiple choice question a very fair and quite easy. Her short answer questions are a bit harsh but if you pay attention many written exam questions are answered exactly how she wants them in lectures and review, so getting good grades are achievable.
Nice + accessible outside class. Lectures aren't as engaging as some professors. The marking for tests is so bad as its focused on if you have specfic words in your answer but it is the bio dept thats at fault for that. On my midterm I answered a question right but because I did not use the exact word they wanted in my explanation, i got 0 points.
I had to teach myself this entire course...
So confusing to follow in lectures and very boring. Would cancel class but not tell students until 30 mins into the class time. Records and posts all lectures so dont have to go really lol. Does many review sessions to help prepare for evaluations. Final was brutal with niche and questions never talked about
she made me so unmotivated to study because she would just yap and we had to know everything she was saying more than the slides. only reason i passed was because of the labs and quizzes she gave, so she's trying to make sure people pass but her teaching needs sm work. she's nice though.
Lectures are boring—be ready to self-teach. Quizzes (25%) and labs (25%) are easy. Midterm closely follows practice but looks for keywords. The final was very straightforward; many MC questions were repeated. Keep up with content and know ALL learning outcomes, and you'll do well. SA on the final was specific to certain learning outcomes.
Half the time you can barely understand her. The course material she covers is mostly high school material, but the way she teaches it makes it harder to understand. Be ready to learn it yourself and focus on the learning outcomes.
Im going to give an honest review: She's kind and accessible, but she cannot teach a lecture. Her way of teaching is basically her taking to herself and expecting us to understand. By the end third week of the semester I stopped going to class and just studied from the book. Study from the book and use her learning outcomes as reference. GL.
anyone who says this class was hard did not put even a minimal amount of effort in.the short answer marking was super specific, which hurt a lot of people. exams were similar to the samples, with repeat questions. she's a bad lecturer, but clear about expectations, and her review sessions often had real exam questions. you'll be ok tho, just attend
If you put in the effort, it's very easy to do well. Her exams are very similar to past papers and review sessions (many of the questions being the exact same). If you study, attend review sessions, and go to lectures (or watch them online), you'll be fine. Most people who complained skipped lectures entirely.
Honestly I don't get the hate. She clearly gives practice questions, some of which are identical to the exam questions and her lectures are pretty clear to me.
Do not waste your time going to her class TRUST ME. It is a better use of your time to just learn the material on your own. This class is honestly not as hard as people make it out to be, if you know the content well then you should be able to do decent. But she is NOT going to be helpful in getting you a good mark.
You need to self teach. No need to go to class if you have the textbook (I only got an A+ because I memorized it). PAY ATTENTION TO HER REVIEW QUESTIONS, THEY'RE ALWAYS ON THE MIDTERMS/EXAM. 3 quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 exam, and a lab. the exam is usually easier than the midterm.
She's not as bad as some people say she is. Her lecture's may not be the best, but her assessments are very simple in my opinion which makes up for it. Just flashcard every slide and you'll do well in her class. The people who trash on her probably just didn't study/attend lectures. I wouldn't be worried to take this class with her.
Hate is undeserved. Prof goes out of her way to post old midterm/final exam and do many review sessions (questions are used in the exams). She answers any question and explains the reasoning why your answer would be right/wrong. SAQ is hard, but because she is looking for specific answers and she explains what she's looking for during lectures.
I know a lot of people don't like her but I think she was fine. Her lectures were really boring, but they were recorded so I would just watch on 2x speed later. Her exams were also not that hard, as long as you actually study. The quizzes are good grade boosters too since they're open-book. But she genuinely seems like she wants you to understand.
This prof gets a bad rep. Very clear about outcomes, and often stated what potential midterm/exam questions would be. She gave so much review and held several review sessions. Very nice and constructive at office hours, and if you actually study you can get a good grade. Lectures are recorded, which is extremely helpful. Textbook not mandatory.
This prof is extremely monotone and talks way to fast. Unless you understand the content the review sessions are useless. A lot of very tedious material to learn and she makes understanding in class not an easy job. The only thing that I appreciated is that weight of all the work makes sense and it's easy to recover if you mess up the midterm.
Save yourself the trouble. She doesn't know how to teach, all she does it talk at you and to you. It is very difficult to understand. The review sessions are useless. I am a very good student and this class was horrible, difficult and not worth the cost of tuition. Find yourself a different professor.
She cannot teach well at all, you have to self-teach. Went into this final with an A, came out with a C+. Final was brutal, she said final was cumulative, but it was based on the last 2 lectures. You can't understand what she's saying. The class is content heavy and has written answer and multiple choice questions. AVOID!
RUN!!!!!!!
Went to every class, still disliked this class the most and I LOVE cell and molecular biology as a subject. I had her for her first semester teaching ever. It was just a mess. Midterm was practically all copy and paste from the practice questions she gave in class, which gave me a false sense of security for the final. Run while u have the chance
This prof is confusing and disorganized. She jumps through topics with little clarity, leaving students lost. Explanations often make concepts harder to grasp, and it's difficult to follow her lectures. Overall, not effective for learning bio. AVOID!!!
She's like the only English BIO1140 prof, so good luck. At this point, it's just an initiation for any bio-related degree to take her. Pay attention to the specific formatting of how she wants you to respond to short answer questions.
Poor lectures, nothing is understandable, but she expects A LOT on the midterm. Grading is done by TAs and they are really harsh on it. I went to her office hours and she treated me like I'm stupid asf. Unfortunately, she was the only prof who was teaching this course so I had no choice. If you guys have choices, please avoid.
Biology was my strong suit in high school however after taking her class I feel like not only have I learned nothing but I know nothing as well. your grade is only from 3 quizzes, a midterm, and a culmanative final. the midterm was literally the hardest thing I have ever written, I fear its a canon event for all Uottawa freshman sorry :(
I used to LOVE bio, got a 94 in HS, this class has made me HATE IT. doesn't even try to make questions cohesive, purposely tricks you on those "select all that are true" questions. Im fearing for my life on this final, RUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
I loved this prof and don't understand the poor reviews. she does a bunch of review sessions and goes over past exams and quizzes in class to help students understand. the way that the final grade was calculated (25% for online quizzes, 25% for labs, 15% for midterm, 35% final) was very helpful.
She provides lots of review sessions and even uploads previous midterms and final exams, which are almost identical to the final and midterm (I even found that the final and misterm were easier). Practice her review questions, as they're very similar ones get put on the midterm and final. Her teaching is a bit unclear however.
Not the best. Her short-answer questions are confusing and the marking scheme is EXTREMELY specific. If you don't know the exact answer you probably will not get any points. Also very hard to ask questions in class because she is very dismissive. Some questions on exams are repeated from her review session so that is helpful.
