Valentine is sometimes hard to understand as English is not her first language, but she always offers her assistance so that your learning may be easier. I trully did enjoy her lab class.
Her French accent may be strong but she really is a helpful teacher. I thought she was good teacher, but many ppl say otherwise..
I had Valentine for a lab and she is awesome. Her accent is strong but she is knowledgable and organized. She explains the bio lab lectures well and isn't intimidating.
Valentine is a horrible instructor do no take her if you want to somewhat enjoy this class.
I found her to be cold, rude, and downright miserable. Very hard to understand as english is not her first langauge.
Personally, she is adorable. Quirky and fun. As a lab instructor, however, I didn't find that so much. Make sure you learn everything beforehand. The class is essentially 3 hours of cramming as much as you can and then being quizzed on it. Her marking and wording on quizzes is definitely not the best.
Had her for lab and i thought she was good..she explained the lab first then left us alone to play with the models and such. she answers questions if we had any and draw tables and pictures for extra help on some labs. she docks for spelling though..but other than then i liked her a lot
she can be kind of intimidating but as long as you do your readings, attend class and listen you'll do fine!
I had her for my Lab. Valentine is french, her accent could be hard to understand if you have never been around a french canadian before. Biology is a heavy class so of course it is difficult, however she explains the important topics. As long as you come prepared to lab (and practice spelling) you will be fine!
She is an awesome teacher. I adore her, she is the best person ever. Though her accent sometimes makes you confused on what she say but she really tries to make herself understood by everybody. She is extremely helpful and understanding. I really learned bio easily because of her.
Valentine is amazing! Her tests are fair and she is very specific about what will be on the test. It's a tough course but she made it very enjoyable.
I had her for lab, and she was a very good instructor. Must do all readings and learn the material before coming to the lab. Her exams were quite easy i found. Her accent is hard to understand, but she jokes around alot and will do her best to make sure her point comes across clear. Would highly recommend
Valentine was awesome. This was my first lab course and although she can be intimidating she is really very sweet when you get down to it. Remembering key terms was also much easier when I could think of words in her accent.
You have to get use to her accent, but she teaches the stuff you need to know. Her lab exams aren't very easy so, study hard and make sure to ALWAYS do your pre labs. I would recommend her
My hardest class this semester. These labs were long and gruelling. There was just so much content and so much is expected of you. She is very friendly and willing to help. Her accent is hard to understand and she knows this so sometimes she spells out what she means to avoid confusion.
Valentine was really tough. She is by FAR the hardest lab professor, and the marks in her class reflect it. Average on both exams was in the 50's. I have an A in every other class (including the lecture portion of this class), and will have a C in the lab. She can be condescending, rude, and makes asking questions a little scary! Do not recommend
I really struggled with this lab. You need to read your lab supplement, manual, atlas, textbook, etc. And it's very strict, you have to be on time every day or you can't write your lab quizzes. Lots of memorizing anatomy.
Do not take her lab if your life depends on it.. I went from a lovely appreciation of this course in first semester and achieving a B+ to passing the lab component by the skin of my teeth at 51% bringing my overall to a C. Hard to understand, rude, and extremely histology focused instead of connecting it to our nursing degree. Just don't do it
Valentine's a hard marker, she's detail orientated but tells you what to write to get full marks. Take note of what she wants. You HAVE to read your lab manual, review concepts and models before you go into lab each week or you won't get above a C+ in the lab. She's the only option for lab, but honestly just put in the effort and you'll be okay.
Valentine is very knowledgable and she honestly is a pretty good prof, but her quizzes and midterms are just way too hard and it's really discouraging. She knows her stuff but needs to chill out a bit on her test material.
I found Valentine to be very helpful when I asked questions and at times, I learned more from her class than lecture. She seems harsh at first but show her that you are there to learn and she will help as much as she can. Be punctual, practice your spelling and things will be great. I liked being in her class and she's actually funny (seriously)!
Valetine is tough, however she is a reallly really good instructor. If you want an 'easy' prof, it's not Valetine. BUT if you are willing to put in the work, and if you care, you will do well and you will learn a lot from Valentine.
Hated Valentine. Her exams are brutal, if you want to pass do not even think about taking her course. I am a great student with an A+ in the lecture, but her midterms are gruelling. She is a nice person, but extremely difficult and expects so much of you. Asks the most obscure questions you can think of, and is very mean about her answers. 0/10
Valentine is not very interested in helping her students and her exams are way too hard. Do not take her lab if you can choose.
Don't. Just Don't. Seriously, if you care about your GPA, she's not the prof to have. Her exams are BRUTAL. She goes through her lecture slides at the speed of light, giving you no chance to write it down, but also doesn't post the notes until after class so you can't even follow along. Test are impossible because she asks the most obscure stuff :(
I've never really hated a professor before. If you are thinking of taking her, think again! The WORST professor ever! Avoid her if you can! Just avoid her. She won't help you. She wants her students to fail! If you miss an exam even for a valid reason and when I say valid, you have a doctor's note, she won't let you retake it!!!
Just no!! This professor's happiness is to watch and see her students fail! She seems like she doesn't know how it's like to be a student. Her expectations are unreasonable. Her exams are way too hard!!
Hardest marker/Test ever!!! Her exams are almost impossible to pass. She is a nice person; but there is just now way on this planet that it would of been possible to pass her bio lab class. No way.. one advice you future students: if you take her class........*GOOD LUCK MY DEAR* it will be a challenge. Good luck my future nurse; good luck. lol
BIOL 2203 is a heavy course, your mark directly reflects how much time you invest. Valentine DOES CARE about her students, and always tries to make the best of a difficult course. She'll go above and beyond to help if YOU approach her. HOWEVER If you'er not going to be dedicated to the course don't expect her to be dedicated to you.
Valentine is just a huge grump. She's picky, irritable, and doest care about student success. She can be late and waste 15 minutes getting her lecture ready, but if you are then its game over. She is a hard marker but her tests are fairly straight forward. Anatomy is hard no matter who you take it from, she just makes it that much more unpleasant.
Valentine is a hard marker. She's very unapproachable and gets angry for asking too many questions. She also only just reads off the powerpoints during lecture, so you could probably self study and not waste your time. Powerpoints are posted on blackboard. Anatomy is hard no matter who you take it from, but if you can avoid Valentine at all costs.
Valentine is AMAZING. The course is HARD. It's not her fault. She's teaching what she has to with half as much time as she needs. Phenomenal woman, amazing teacher, hilarious. Show up for classes or you will NOT pass. No way. She gives great tips to remember things and her acting stuff out helps to get it in your head. LOVELOVELOVE this prof.
Valentine is amazing! I can guarantee the people who rate her badly are the people who don't want to put in the work for the course but blame it on the prof. Anatomy is a HARD class, but she is seriously an expert. She knows everythinnnnggg anatomy. She was so nice in lecture and lab, but very very tough marker. Stay on top of the content!!
I found that she marks histology portfolios very hard. The grading was also confusing to me. It was hard to improve and seems like my marks were all over the place. Couple good ones, couple bad ones, and ok ones but I put the same amount of effort in each ( if not more closer to the end of the semester).
Lovely prof that genuinely wants students to learn and succeed, but with the most difficult exams and hardest possible grading.
Dr. Valentine is super sweet and she really cares for her students. She is for sure one of my fav profs. Anatomy is a HARD course so put in the time, go to class, read the text book, study (use the lab models in the study room).
Valentine is super nice, hilarious, and wants you to succeed! Anatomy is a difficult course with lots of memorization, but as long as you keep on top of material in lecture and lab you will do fine. Her marking can be tough and sometimes her questions on midterms are unclear, so make sure you ask exactly what she wants. I would take her again!
Valentine is a hard marker but she is such a great professor. She cares about her students and wants you to succeed. Very sweet lady and makes lectures more interesting.
Valentine is an amazing prof! Anatomy is a difficult course but she does her best to cover important concepts that will be on the midterms. She is funny and very helpful, not at all judgemental towards her students regarding their abilities. The course is mostly memorization so don't fall behind in the assignments! Would definitely take her again
Worst professor ever. Avoid at all cost!
I dont think Valentine is a bad prof however she is not great online and isnt able to use anything on her computer well. I also find that she rambles a lot and my class has no idea what she is talking about.
she is just the worst prof I have ever seen in my life, the way she makes us to do the quiz for the previous lab 30 minutes before the lab is just confusing because she literally rambles every single class and barely anyone can understand her, I personally learnt nothing after every class and I literally have to teach myself the material.
Physiology lab is a tough no matter who your instructor is, but valentine just makes the experience so much worse, she barely makes sense in what she says, if you have her whether in lecture or lab, i'd try to avoid her at or cost and I have nothing against her as a person, she is just not competent to be a professor in my honest opinion.
Well to start off she didn't know what surface area was so thats your first hint. She's not tech savvy at all, and just doesn't make the process of doing a lab online enjoyable or educational at all. Just don't take physiology online.
I honestly think she is the worst professor that I have ever seen in my entire life, she made me regret for taking physiology online because her lab is just horrendous, she always makes irrelevant jokes and barely made sense in what she said then got mad because people couldn't hear it, sometimes she didn't even understand the material herself.
you gotta get used her accent, I don' think she's super horrible like most people say but I certainly did not enjoy her class either, and it is true that you have to teach yourself the material if you're not used to her accent.
During online class you can barely understand her. Very disorganized when it comes to the lab component and the way she words questions on quizzes wastes your time and makes you question if you're stupid. She clearly has no idea what is going on or what to do as she attends the other lab this class, copying what the other prof does.
Absolutely brutal for an online semester. Its hard to understand at times with her accent. The tight time limit of 45 seconds per questions on tests makes it hard to calmly analyze the figures and questions, which is bad for a class that is test heavy with four midterms and weekly quizzes. Questions are vague but want ridiculously specific answers
I don't find Valentine to be a bad teacher, rather the switch to online is really working against her when it comes to anatomy. She is accessible to students and will help you if you reach out to her. Test questions can be vague which makes it difficult to provide the specific answers she looks for. 4 midterms and weekly assignments.
Shes honestly the worst professor Ive had in the last 3 years Ive attended MRU. The way she is handling the online lab sessions does not work at all. She does not use the lab manuals as a blueprint for the exams, which made the class atrocious. When students confronted her about the exam, she said that she was not responsible for the questions.
Valentine seems like a nice person outside of school setting, but she is not very good at teaching biol1216 online. Im forced to withdraw from this course because her lab section feels like a whole other class I have to worry about. Not to mention, the lecture and lab sections do not correlate at all in terms on content.
Valentine does not teach anything during our lab sessions. She used Jamboard as a way to get students to work together in groups. However, I found that this platform is not very helpful when it comes to a test heavy course. She expects you to answer super hard questions, despite not being very good at teaching the content.
BIOL1216 is probably the worst class I have taken in my entire life, mainly because of the lab section. In the midterms, the text boxes for short answers were super small which made it hard to see your answer. Furthermore, she does not give enough time to answer the questions without feeling super rushed.
This teacher rambles on a lot during class and the whole class does not even know what she is talking about. When no one responds to her, she gets offended and start calling out students. Personally, I have learned nothing from her in the past 3 months and I know Im not the only one. I have nothing against this professor personally just saying.
As you guys may already know, we have to get a 50% in the lab section to pass the lecture section. I was forced to drop this class because I was doing very poorly in the lab section. In my opinion, Valentine is not a very good lab instructor for this online semester. The way she teaches things does not make any sense.
Worst professor I've ever had. You cant understand her and lecture are so disorganized that 75% of the original class dropped by the end of the semester. She takes offence when no one answers her going after students personally. The review below where someone gave her a 4 I'm pretty sure is her trying to up her score (she used a similar phrase).
I have had professors that I didn't enjoy their classes before but I have never felt angry with one particular prof the content in the exam was never correlated to what we were taught, which is not so much because she is always rambling. I always spent a couple hours going through the lab manual myself because I never learnt anything from her class
I am not going to say much about her teaching ability because you can look at the other reviews but what makes me mad the most is that she acts like it is our privilege to wait for her to mark our assignments. Most of us want to know the majority of our grades before the withdrawal deadline but she acts like it's not her job to mark it on time
Be prepared to teach yourself everything in this class. Valentine is incompetent when it comes to the material (constantly sending emails to correct herself). VERY slow marker- you will not know what your grade is going into the final. I would really suggest switching profs or not taking this class online. Very poor experience.
i understand that we have to work hard every class but this prof makes it really difficult to succeed as she is very disorganized and I have never seen a prof who won't release the lab marks for students before the withdrawal deadline, she should really consider retiring
just the worst prof you could ever get, all the reviews say it all, I would avoid her at all cost
my mental health took another toll by taking lab with her, I don't care how good she is when it comes to in person teaching but she has certainly been the worst professor I have ever had, if you can't even understand the technology then you shouldn't be teaching online
when her lab section is the only thing that works around your schedule, I'd suggest drop that class and take another one, you can always take physiology later and your gpa won't suffer
Absolutely atrocious teacher, and class in general. Valentine reads off her own PowerPoint slides, so there is not much point in attending lectures. I have never had a prof who grades this hard. If you strive for A's, my condolences to you. Her assignments are useless. Her tests aren't hard to perform on IMO, but her grading is hell-like :D
STAY AWAY! I believe Valentine wants to smite students the way she gives out bad marks. Valentine only reads PP's then tests you on knowledge not found on the PP's, then demands you don't argue about her methods of grading. If you want don't want to get good grades or if you are a masochist, this would be a good class for you! Valentine is very BAD
Valentine is the WORST prof I have ever taken to this day. This prof ONLY reads off of powerpoints and expects you to understand content NOT in the slides. She grades based on what number she decides to choose that day (it's never over 80%). Take this class if you feel you need punishment or are a masochist. Valentine is HORRIBLE.
I personally enjoyed Valentine and Anatomy class because I put in the hours outside of class time. It's important become familiar with concepts BEFORE class in order to get the most out of her lectures, or you will be lost. Lots of memorization is involved in order to succeed in Anatomy, but you are rewarded for your the time that you put into it.
absolutely avoid! literally the worst prof, my mental health was horrible while taking human anatomy lab with her.
Valentine is one of the best prof I've had. She really cares about her students and ensures they understand the content. As this is a very tough course, she made it enjoyable. I would definitely recommend taking her class!
This professor I do not recommend taking this class at all. she was very very hard to understand and almost always didn't learn anything in this class. you need to be ready to be learning all the material within the class by yourself. She also never answers questions and if she is speaking watch what she saying since sometimes she isn't accurate
Valentine cares about her students and their well-being. However, in-class lectures, she skips over her PowerPoint and reads straight off of them, giving little to no explanation/ depth to her lectures. Her exams are tough, and the class averages can vouch for that. If you enjoy self-teaching, she is the prof for you. If not, good luck.
First of all Valentine has to be the worst teacher I have ever had. On our final she has so many spelling mistakes. The class averages for our midterms were 40s which for nursing students is unreal. NEVER TAKE HER CLASSES
Valentine is an amazing professor. This course is very hard but that is no reason to put the blame on her! She is very good at explaining concepts and makes sure that everyone has no questions before she moves on. If you do have questions she will be sure to explain concepts in an alternate way so it may be easier for you to understand.
BIOL 1221 is a very hard course. Students should be prepared to do the work outside of class. Valentine does not read off her slides. She explains topics well but since biology is a hard course with complex materials, it was hard to stay focused if you do not prepare and do your readings ahead of class. Again its up to us students to do better
Stop blaming her accent for not understanding the topics. Do your prep before class and you will do fine!
Valentine is a good professor. She cares about her student's success. Theres a lot of memorizing in this class and students should be prepared to do their readings ahead.
For me w/ BIOL 1221, I have gone through many profs because I struggled with this course, I did it a lot! Valentine has so far been the ONLY prof that actually explains the topics in a way you UNDERSTAND. She also has given us hints about topics for exams, she is merciful with marking, and she is super sweet and helpful! Ignore the bad reviews!!!
I have failed this course before and I managed to do very well this time around because of Valentine. She explains topics well and she is not a hard marker like other students make her out to be.
Valentine is very genuine and cares for her students that put in the work. Slight language barrier but by the end of the semester, you get used to it. Explains topics the way you may need them explained, although I found her tests very difficult, no madder how hard I studied. Overall great prof and marks very fair.
Valentine is a good professor. She explains the topics really well and she does not go off-topic like the other bio professor that I have had before. Her exams are not as difficult as I thought they would be.
Valentine does not read off her slides. I dont know how other students got this impression. If you want a certain grade, youre gonna have to do more outside of class time, no need to blame the prof for not understanding the materials.
I liked Valentine. Her lectures are engaging and she does ask us if we need clarification on certain topics.
Valentine is a great prof! I had her for 1220 lecture/lab as well as 1221 lab. She is honestly the sweetest and funniest lady ever, it's super worth it to create a good relationship with her. Her teaching style takes a bit of getting used to at first, but if you put in the work outside of class, you can do well
The low ratings for her are usually from years ago & despite my anxieties from those, I had an amazing experience with her. Just a reminder, BIOL labs are going to be content-heavy no matter who you take it with. She is a very nice person and will try to adjust the difficulty of quizzes/exams to make sure everybody who puts in effort passes.
She would essentially make fun of me if I ever left labs early and announce it to the entire class that I was leaving. Very rude. Oh, and don't try asking her any questions because she would pretty much ask if I was paying attention at all. I really dont get how people are giving 5 stars, everyone I've talked to about her don't like her!
Took her for both 1220 & 1221, had an amazing time with her! This lab is the heaviest class you will have during your 1st year in nursing. But Quizlet and the following resources helped me through the weekly new materials, : A Brief Atlas of the Human Body by Hutchinson (free pdf available) & MRU virtual biology lab website for A&P. Good luck!
Had Valentine for both 1220 and 1221 labs and I thoroughly enjoyed having her as a lab instructor! Bio1220/21 in general is tough but explained the concepts very well and always let us to about what she expects for tests. She would make labs interesting with humour and was also very helpful during labs. enjoyed very much, would recommend!
Absolutely worst prof I've ever had. She will make you teach the whole 3 hours lab by yourself and then give brief notes at the end. I feel like you go into the lab knowing even less than you did before. She is extremely old school and will dox you for marks with the smallest thing. I don't think she should continue teaching… you've been warned
Valentine is one of the kindest professors i know. It is easy to get a high grade if you study hard and effectively. A lot of people bring her down because she docs marks for spelling and believes she is challenging but I believe her marks are reflecting of the work put in. She is kind and funny and i genuinely love her as a human.
Everyone says she's overly tough, but I think her quizzes/tests were actually quite fair. Valentine is super caring and helpful prof who makes her classes very entertaining. In general, this is a tough course and it requires a lot of studying outside of class.
So many reviews say she's terrible but I couldn't disagree more. If you participate in labs and interact with her you will see how caring she is for her students. It is a harder course but she pushes you to figure things out through the lab activities as opposed to just giving you answers which in the end helped me a lot through the course!
Valentine is an amazing lab prof to have for your first year, she explains the all the content, answers questions very well and is very kind. The labs are heavy and she can be a harsh marker compared to other profs but I learned so much in this course and if you do the work and study regularly you will pass.
rushes some key concepts and you will NEED to put in extra work and studying for this class. Her quizzes are pretty straightfoward if you have genuinely studied the lab manuals and she is willing to help with the PLA's after labs. She is not a very very hard marker and gives 0.25/0.50/0.75 for potential small errors/
She's really nice, will focus a lot on actual test material, only thing is it's a bit hard to understand her bc of her accent but it's a cute quirk LOL. Actually do the labs and you'll be good tbh
The course is heavy in itself, and needs A LOT of studying outside of class. However, I found her lab quizzes and exams to be fair. She was kind, and always willing to answer questions. I found that she went over all the necessary content, and even helped us by clarifying & simplifying content. If you put the effort into this class, you'll do well.
I have seen many reviews about her saying she was difficult. To be honest she's actually very sweet and helpful. You will do well in her lab as long as you study well outside of the lab. For lab quizzes I often studied the objectives on the manual and never had any issues. She is willing to help and is giving with partial marks
Valentine is very caring towards her students and she tries to make the 3 hour lab more enjoyable by having a silly personality. The content is heavy and hard but if you put in the work you will see it pay off. She is a stickler about spelling but its anatomy so it makes sense.
The course itself was difficult but Valentine is super sweet and a great teacher.
Valentine is so sweet, caring, and funny. The content is heavy so I honestly didnt do well during quizzes but that isnt Valentines fault, she is genuinely a really good professor who cares about her students, she is responsive to emails and makes three hour labs go by quickly P.S. Someone's accent shouldn't be a valid reason to give a lower rating
She teaches things well just that the concepts are super difficult and unfortunately if you don't spell everything correctly you will lose lots of marks.
Valentine was honestly a great professor. she's clear on her expectations and is fair. Do not get discouraged by what you see on here, she is just like every other lab instructor. Lab is a very common class to do bad in, hence why people shift the blame to Valentine. Her and Jessica are the best lab instructors.
This class is so difficult and content heavy, but Valentine was always willing to help and answer questions. She'll try to give as many partial marks as she can on her quizzes and even the lab tests. The content we need to know is a lot, it ends up making people bitter about their prof, but Valentine grades fair and teaches well.
Professor is nice and caring. The course is content heavy, so not everything can always be covered in full, which is understandable given the amount of material. Teaching style is concise with clear expectations and a strong focus on key concepts. Would take this instructor again and found the material interesting.
To be honest at first I really didn't like her. She once grabbed my face and shook me because I was doing a movement wrong and she would grab my shoulders which I wasn't comfortable with. Also she would pick on students a lot and make fun of them in front of the class. However, I did eventually get used to it. You have to do a lot of homework.
