Dr. Hilaire is a fair professor who I definitely think is one of the best Chem instructors. His lectures are clear and his exams are fair (15 MC and 3 FR). He gives 3 lecture exams, a couple of quizzes, homework, and the final. He also has an exam replacement policy and is accessible outside of class. Attendance isn't mandatory but I recommend it.
He cares a lot about the students and is reasonable with due dates and test scores. The lectures can occasionally be a bit boring however they are helpful to go to. He responds to emails frequently and doesn't make chemistry difficult.
This is THE BEST TEACHER AT UM!! definitely take him! he is outstanding and cares so much about his students. you will not only learn a lot from him but also get a good grade when you apply yourself!
Sir Val really cares about his students! If you have to take any chemistry class, take it with him!! he's the best. If you do the work and seek help if you need it, you will do well in class. pay attention in lectures because he really is a great teacher!!
Dr. St. Hillaire is awesome because he really cares that everyone does the best they can. Although the lectures are tedious, they help a lot (I didn't go to most and got A- as a result)
Sir Valentine is an amazing professor! He truly cares about his students and wants to see them succeed. If you are ever unsure about anything during class, you can always go to him after class or ask a question during lecture. The work is definitely manageable and he makes Chemistry fun!
Professor St. Hilaire really is the best. His lectures are amazing, he teaches in a very clear and concise manner, I learned a lot from him. He is accessible outside of class as well, go to his office hours, they help a lot. Make sure to read the textbook and take notes. Exams are very similar to the practice ones online.
st. hillaire is amazing. He is a great professor, and teaches you exactly what you need to know for the exam. His study materials are so so helpful and specific. If you show up to class, do your homework, and go to his office hours when you need to, you should get a good grade. BEST CHM 111 PROF!!!
What an amazing and kind human being and professor. Do yourself a favor and take him.
Chemistry overall is a hard class and I really struggled but I ended up passing because I knew I could not fail. He's not a horrible professor but going to lectures did not help me at all. Going to office hours really helped me because he simplified the problems for me. He takes attendance and that helps your final grade.
This man is probably the best professor you will end up taking at UM. Just an overall great guy. He understands that this is a CHM111 course and always tried to help out with people's grades. Do all the homework, go to every lecture, read the chapters, and do the suggested practice problems and you should get an A. You have to not try to do poorly.
Great professor, he really cares about his students and is a pretty funny guy!! DEF recommend for chemistry! he's kind of quiet though, so if you choose his lecture I would sit close to the front to be able to hear him. He also has a cool accent! tests are very focused on the lecture so I'd take notes from there.
Hillaire is a decent professor. Sit close to the front because he talks at such a low volume. He is available outside of class to help you but his tests are really hard so prepare to study.
St. Hilaire is the GOAT. By far best chemistry teacher that I have encountered thus far at UM. Widely respected by many students. Good lectures, easy to learn, and his exams are fairly comparable to the practice exams given.
Very helpful but hard class
Professor Hilaire is amazing, this was my first time ever taking chemistry and he really supported and helped me to pass even though i struggled in the beginning. I would recommend him to anyone!
St. Hilaire was the best teacher I've had at UM. His lectures are very helpful and he takes time during the lecture to answer student questions. Unlike other professors, his responses to questions are clear and concise. Exams are just like the practice tests he gives you beforehand, just different numbers. Actually wants his students to succeed
St. Hilaire is an amazing prof. His lectures are great and he is great at explaining things. The tests are easy if you study and do the practice test. He doesn't give a lot of mandatory homework but you need to study and do optional book problems.
This class is easier than other chemistry professors. You will need to do a lot of practice questions but his powerpoints are very helpful. I am taking him for CHM 112 as well.
Best professor i have EVER HAD. He is soooo helpful. He is so helpful in and out of class. He gives so many points even if u get the answer wrong. Curves !!!!
Best. Professor. Ever. No doubt. He cares and takes time to explain things to you and he does it so well. Do his suggested book problems and his practice tests and youll do well. This class is what you put in - study a decent amount and youll get an A. I never took AP/IB Chemistry and was terrified of Chemistry, but now I love it
Dr. St. Hilaire is an amazing professor who will take his time to explain somewhat challenging concepts in a coherent manner. He wants everyone to pass - he will even replace your lowest midterm score with your final grade, provided you study enough to do good. Don't skip him, he will go over conceptually important questions for midterms.
He was great at first but he got kind of bogged down and lost track of keeping with the schedule he gave us. Explains concepts very clearly and very accessible during office hours. Attendance helps your grade in a pinch. The final was 40% based off of stuff he spent the last 2 weeks going over and was hard but he must've curved it.
One of the best professors that I have had. He will really make time to explain concepts to you if you come to office hours and is a very fair grader on all assignments and exams.
Unclear grading criteria, nobody know how he curves, goes on tangents, bad lecturer. Not a good experience
great professor. his exams are definitely easy as long as your understand the basic concepts. the material can be difficult but an A is doable with some effort.
Really nice guy but very disorganized during lecture. He doesn't get through many slides during lectures, so make sure you are reading the textbook. You can get a good grade if you don't pay attention to his lectures as long as you read the textbook. If you go to Chem Workshop, you will receive extra credit added to your grade. Would take again.
Overall, the easier chemistry professor at UM but you will work for your grade. I highly recommend taking him. He is very nice and gives lot of study material for his exams.
Well, after taking a relatively hard professor the first semester, my friends insisted I'd take Prof St Hilaire. Biggest mistake of my life! Lectures are horrible, there have been times he only went through 3 slides in 50 minutes. I didn't even end up getting an A in this "easier" class when I did in the other one. its a lose-lose case.
I only took him for my year of general chemistry, so I have no real reference point to compare him to, but I think hes a decent professor. I was always confused by his lectures but he takes the time out to explain if you need it. Tests are extremely difficult and that is the majority of your grade. Prepare to study.
Took him last semester and he was great, but he really let himself go this semester. Maybe consider another prof for 112.
This professor is the easier chem professor when compared to the others, but still not great. His lectures are quite useless as he only gets through about 3 slides during the whole class period and even then his explanations are not very good. This spring semester I took him and he really seemed to give up on our class.
Dr St Hilaire is very nice, pays attention to your questions, his exams are more than fair. The final exam had some bonus points, midterm exams did not. A reasonable amount of homework, he extends deadlines if needed, which is VERY nice. Go to his office hours, he will know who you are and help you a lot. He is clear, does not complicate things up.
Love his class and the pace of his class.
I was scared to take college chem, as I had no background in the subject. But this professor really made the subject understandable. He creates super helpful study guides before tests, and he explains things many times, so its easy to learn. He is easy to reach outside of class. He makes jokes in class & is caring. READ THE TEXTBOOK! No pop quizzes
Very caring and takes time to answer your questions, esp during lecture. He has a lot going on but his lectures have gotten more and more helpful. He gives you study guides and textbook questions of EXACTLY what he wants you to know. Super fair grader and reasonable tester. It's orgo so it's hard, but he doesn't try to trick you. Great guy overall.
Really great teacher, doesnt grade hard at all. Takes attendance on tophat but there are ways around that lol. Vey helpful with transition online.
I had zero experience with chem courses & was scared about this class. He cares A LOT about his students & wants to see everyone succeed. He is super flexible & understanding. If you go through his presentations & practice problems you will succeed. If youre not doing well in class & address him, he will be very helpful. Definitely recommend him!
Great Teacher and actually cares about students. Study guides and problem sets are very helpful. CHM 222 is very difficult but manageable. Just make sure to go to class everyday and also get a tutor. He is the best professor for CHM 222.
Amazing.
I love this professor. The class was very hard, especially since I can barely do algebra... I had to memorize every word on his slides. If you are really bad at math and have bad reading comprehension then take this class before 121.
Pretty good professor. Lectures are boring and he goes over the same material so many times but he really wants you to understand it. He's also very accessible outside of class. Tests are super easy.
This class was the most unorganized class that I've had all semester. He's never firm with any due dates and tells students different information about exams. I don't even know my grade because he's terrible with the grade book. I basically had to teach myself the lessons because his lectures are useless. He also never responds to emails.
I took IB DP chem in high school and decided to take this as part of my STEM cognate. It was a really basic chem class, only covered 6 textbook chapters in the whole semester. Don't pay for ALEKS because it doesn't hurt your grade if you don't do it. He seems to really care about students learning the material, just super disorganized!!
Dr. St. Hilaire was often repetitive but only so that we could understand concepts better. He was also a bit disorganized and had a bit of a confusing grade book, but was otherwise caring about his students. If you took AP Chem in high school, the material will come easy to you but pay attention to the lectures anyway.
Dr. St. Hilaire is a really great guy. I had a horrible chem background coming into here, but I aced every test! His class was definitely disorganized and a bit hard to follow, but I figured it out at the end of the day. He is always willing to help out a student and accommodate you!
Good person and teacher. His lectures are basically him talking to himself through the ppt. He encourages participation but not graded. Tests are hard, but its to be expected, just be above the average and you'll be fine. He curves. His office hrs are NOT mandatory but are HEAVILY recommended, and almost a must if u want to get an A. I didnt tho.
This man is a very nice guy but do not take his class if you are not able to teach yourself all of the material. His lectures were SO unorganized that I was not able to follow anything he said during them. If you have to take him - make better use of your time and just self-study. He also has never answered a student email.
Not a difficult class, he breaks everything down to the basics. If you haven't taken AP Chem, recommend taking this before taking CHM121. Also he has a cool accent lol
Only orgo teacher at the school that doesn't actively try to trick you. His exams are straightforward and if you put in the work an A is actually possible, unlike with some of the other orgo teachers. Hes a cool guy, responds to emails, and was helpful in office hours. He should be your #1 choice for your orgo professor.
The professor was nice and repeated topics so we can understand more. Few assignments and the rest are exams. He was too nice on his exams. Straightforward questions. No book needed. Youtube videos and attending lectures should get you a good grade.
Nice professor. He tries to use lectures to explain the topics until you understand, but sometimes it is repetitive. The topics are fairly easy to learn, and there are only about 5-6 chapters for whole course. As long as you follow along in some lectures and do the posted exam reviews, should be just fine.
I did not take AP Chem in high school because it has never been my best subject, but I have actually learned a ton from this class. His lectures are very thorough and he cares that you really understand the topic more than just if you get a good grade. Definitely take him if you can and especially before CHM 121 if you haven't taken AP Chem.
St. Hilaire is the BEST!!! I had him for HHMI labs and he was the most uplifting and kind professor I have ever had. I would recommend him to everyone!
Awesome professor!!! Gives extra credit on exams. If you miss a class he records all the lectures. Will accommodate you if you cant make an exam.
This man is a legit legend. Super funny, you can talk to him so casually about anything. Absolutely amazing for HHMI, so much fun! He does a lot to help out with the HHMI projects. Ask him for a compound you need, and he'll stop what he's doing and will go grab it for you. St. Hilaire's care for his students is unmatched, he is truly the best!!!!!!
St. Hilaire is a pretty good prof. I had him for HHMI Lab so I suspect he's a bit different in labs than lecture classes. He's pretty nice and can be funny at times (if your humor is broken) but if you don't already have some lab background, it can be hard to navigate the class because he expects you to have a general understanding.
had him for hhmi lab with diresta and they were the best professors for the lab. we did not see him that much because we saw diresta more but when we did he was very nice and was willing to help with our project when needed. super chill
He can be a bit all over the place but he genuinely makes his class so easy for his students. You don't even have to show up to class, but make sure to always learn the material because the tests will be hard if you don't know anything. He provides study guides and always records his lectures on Blackboard.
Dr. St. Hilaire is an absolute KING. He was super caring and funny - always told us stories about his past jobs and things. Dr. Hilaire genuinely cared about us. He even offered to help me with my CHM 121 work if I needed it. I will definitely be taking him for CHM 222!
It can seem like what he's saying is complicated, but ITS NOT. He takes forever to talk about one topic but only because he is very thorough, so don't get scared. Thats what makes his 110 class so simple. It's just basic math, all you need to do is practice practice practice. Very nice, accessible, and curves generously. TAKE HIM, he's great.
2nd time taking orgo 2. Wish I took it with him first. Many students failed exams and he allowed test corrections. He was ALWAYS accessible to discuss and talk outside of class. Truly an amazing individual. During lecture he can be very confusing but study the textbook.Curve at the end was good because we all failed the final. Written Response exams
He is so sweet and does not want you to fail. Is very accommodating and is forgiving of mistakes. There is no doubt that he is one of the kindest professors I've had. But, lectures were disorganized and hard to follow, and orgo 2 is a hard subject to teach yourself. Spent more time out of class trying to learn the material rather than practice
Professor Hilaire was the only reason I passed Orgo 2. Anytime I needed help with my test corrections or literally anything at all he was there. He wants his students to succeed but he's not oblivious to the fact that orgo 2 is probably the hardest undergrad class at UM. I'm grateful I even passed because I struggled the entire semester.
If available, TAKE HIM. Retook Orgo 2 with him and ended an A :) but overall this class was way easier than taken it online with 4 professor teaching one course in a disorganized fashion. I'd advise waiting to do orgo 2 just to take it with him. I promise you would NOT regret having this professor.
He is easily the nicest professor I had this semester. His tests are not hard at all but even if you dont do well he offers corrections. For 110 he barely gave any HW too. Sometimes he goes into way too much detail on simple things but its in the best light. Def take him if you can
If you have to take CHM 103 make sure it's with St. Hilaire!!! SUPER awesome guy, and actually understands that chem is hard for students. Exams are super straight forward, gives assignments multiple attempts so you actually understand, and will work with you if you struggle. (Don't waste money on the book though.)
He has lots of office hours in person and online. Can over explain topics which sometimes confused me. He provided practice exams and rarely homework. I wish he taught 121!
had him for HHMI lab with diresta and they were both helpful. No quizzes, presentations. And they helped us with our lab and gave feedback. Both are chill and would highly recommend them for HHMI
Prof. St.Hilaire is such a great person and an awesome professor! He is always willing to help and goes out and beyond for his students which is rare. He wants his students to really understand the material. I learned a lot in this class and have enjoyed it! Overall, I definitely recommend taking any chem class with him! You will for sure learn!
Although he is a little disorganized, overall hes a good teacher and attendance is not mandatory and you also have the option to join virtually. Tests are super easy and he drops the lowest at the end of the semester. One of the easiest science classes i have taken at UM
St. Hilaire is the best prof to have for Orgo 2. He teaches really well and wants his students to succeed and really makes an effort for us to understand the material. There are 3 exams & 1 final. He gives some extra credit and has test corrections, so we can get better grades. Take him! He is the best option and an amazing professor.
Valentine was a great professor. He provided pratice exams and held review sessions before each exam. His exams had a CRAZY curve because he allowed revisions. If you could not go to lecture he held a zoom. Would 1000% take him again.
He's kind and understands if you need to reschedule an exam, etc. I mostly taught myself the material but he was a very fair grader. you can get 50% of your points back by doing test corrections on anything you got wrong and you can drop one exam.
He records every class and has an online option, but sometimes it can be hard to follow online. He offers 50% corrections on each test and as long as you complete the practice exams you'll be fine. The lectures can be very long, but if you pay attention and take notes. It is not the same content as 103, it is more like a mini orgo.
This class was a ride. I would 100% take him out of all teachers due to super easy grading. He will teach the first 2-3 chapters, then become unorganized and lose track. From there he will heavily curve exam 2 and 3 and add 20 points if not more of EC on the final. Taught myself all the material, if you can do that you'll get an A, if not a B or C
I wouldn't recommend St. Hilaire. He is unorganized and expects you to learn material he does not cover on your own. He held zooms during spring break to teach and spends too much time on one concept and tangents which don't let him cover all he needs to. Passing the class isn't that hard since you have test corrections.
Bro gave lectures OVER SPRING BREAK. and class always went a few minutes long. These things were consistently annoying. Other than that not a bad teacher.
He gives random iClicker quizzes. Really disorganized and easily distracted during lectures and forgets to cover all test material. His explanations are hard to understand but he provides study guides, practice exams, test reviews, and corrections. Watch examples on youtube. Better than other professors for CHM 110 but not great.
Professor St. Hilaire is reasonable, funny, and accessible. He is the best professor in the department and would highly recommend him for any chem course. But get ready to study because the material is dense and tricky. Tests in his courses are very difficult but are just more complicated versions of the concept at hand.
honestly the most caring and understanding stem professor ive had. had a situation during the semester and he was so accomodating. gives barely any hw and his exams are straightforward so do his reviews. doesnt take attendance but i dont reccomend missing lectures. curves exams and lets you do corrections!! take him if you can!!!
Genuinely caring and very knowledgeable about chem. kind of disorganized which can be frustrating and exams sometimes have things that you wouldn't expect, but if you go to his office hours and study what he says to he's very lenient and you'll end with a good grade. His lectures were rly helpful for me and he's funny so fs attend!
I recommend Prof Hilaire. The class was tough, but he tries to make it as manageable as possible. He gives out optional worksheets, study guides, and exam answers, so you have a lot of practice and know what you did wrong. He also gave a curve. His slides are a lot and he goes kind of slow, but do the work and you will pass.
Super easy material + great articulate teacher + little homework + pretty easy test
St. Hilaire is a nice professor. This class is difficult and is essentially self taught. I'm glad I took it with Hilaire because of his good vibes. If you actually want to learn the material: take the time to learn from the HW, go to as many workshops as you can, and form study groups. Don't rely on the curve it's a bad mindset.
St. Hilare is a chill guy and a nice professor. However, he does not teach during class and is extremely disorganized. Read the textbook to suceed and do past CHM 221 exams. Only come to office hours if you need help and do all the problems in the textbook. The class is self-taught. Not a great teacher. Would recommend taking Gonzalez.
He's not a terrible professor, but he does kind of sound like he's speaking nonsense sometimes during lecture. The good news is he does care about his students and is willing to meet with you. I would've rather taken the 8am class with Cesar instead because he actually explains material better. Overall not bad, but could find a better prof instead.
Funny teacher, loves you if you participate. Accent can make him a little hard to understand but he is more than happy to repeat himself. Skips some of the intro stuff so if you have never taken chemistry before, be prepared to do some self teaching or get a tutor like I did!
Professor Hilaire is a good chem teacher however, he is a bit disorganized. Your grade is comprised of homework, 4 midterm exams (none of which he drops), and a cumulative final. He is nice and is willing to help you but be prepared to study a lot for his exams, especially the final.
He makes Chemistry less intimidating and will help you to succeed in the course. He actually cares about the students and will take the time to do zoom lessons. Just take him, you will learn.
Not that hard of a grader but is very disorganized, listen in lab because he tells you instructions and doesn't give you a written copy.
Easy material, do the practice exams and look at the study guides he posts and you will pass. Reach out to him if you think he made a mistake on your exams. Lectures are slow so it is likely best to learn with outside material. Overall easy course.
sorry but take cesar even if it's at 8 AM
Many students dislike St. Hilaire because he expects you to learn a lot of the material on your own. However, the expectations are clear even though the tests are difficult. He genuinely wants his students to succeed and will curve exams and the final grade to be fair. If you go to his office hours, you WILL succeed. Not an easy A, though.
Tests weren't hard. I didn't go to class, but I felt prepared by workshops. The TA was really strange, though, and was unhelpful/did not know what he was doing. I recommend going to the workshop!!
Dr. Hilaire is a great professor and very accessible during office hours to explain anything. The TA Karsten was absolutely amazing and was very helpful during office hours, and hosted review sessions before every exam that really saved me. Orgo I is difficult, but I definitely recommend taking it with him.
Professor Hilaire goes through material in a slow, organized and clear manner to ensure that students really UNDERSTAND the material. He helps students really learn, not memorize how to solve problems. His class is graded based on participation, 3 exams (1 is dropped) and a final. His exams are extremely similar to in-class problems and posted work
He really cares about his students, but I found it so difficult to pay attention during his lectures because he goes off topic a lot into things you don't really need to know for the exams. There isn't a lot of homework, and it's easy to do well if you just do the practice problems in the textbook.
