She is a very nice and understanding teacher. She is knowledgeable and very informative. I would recommend her to anyone. She is an all around good person!
Mrs. cato is very helpful. She is clear about her teachings too. I would recomened her to anyone!
Mrs. Cato is an awesome teacher. She is also very fair when it comes to grading in class essays!
SHE IS AN AWSOME TEACHER. ShE IS VERY FAIR WHEN GRADING. PROFESSOR CATO WILL GO OUT OF HER WAY O HELP YOU. MAKES THE CLAS FUN AND INTERESTING. I TOOK HER FOR 1101 AND 1102 AND GOT A "B" IN BOTH CLASSES. U MUST TAKE NOTES, AND ATTEND CLASS....BEST,MOST ENERGETIC TEACHER...TAKE HER!
She is a very good teacher. Makes all the material very easy to understand and is very fair on her gradeing policy. Take this teacher. You will lover her.
Prof. Cato is one of the best professors I've seen at ASU. She's very helpful and makes sure you understand everything. Gives easy quizzes & tests rather often, so reading and taking notes is a necessity for this course. Also, the essays are sort of gimmes if you prepare for them. Very easy on grading. I'd recommend her :).
She is worth taking... she explains well and is more than willing to help you... I so recommend her
Very good and very, very professional. She cares about what she teaches.
I loved her for 2002. She made sure that you understood what you were reading, asked questions about it and gave hints as to what would be important for quizzes and essays. I recommend reading the text because quizzes are big part of your grade and come to class because she gives important details in class. You'll love her.
Great Professor...If you want to pass Eng. take her...
Mrs. Cato is the best Lit professor I ever had. Basically as long as you attend EVERY class and take notes you will do fine. Her quizzes are multiple choice and the difficulty can vary. Overall she is a very good professor and as unbelievable as it sounds she will make Lit FUN.
Dr. Cato really teaches you how to write. She tells you what you're doing wrong, what you need to do, and how to fix it. She's easy to talk to and is reasonable with her research papers' due dates. I recommend you go to class everyday as there are multiple small very easy quizzes to help boost your grade.
I absolutely loved prof. cato. she is extremely helpful and she goes over things numerous times until she is sure everyone understands. He quizzes and tests were fairly easy and the essays were easy too if you follow the formula she gives you. I stongly recommend!!! If you fail this class it is because you just didn't try!
Loved her. She thoroughly explains everything and gives great instructions. Very nice. She's a little hard with the way she grades essays, but her tests and quizzes are elementary. She's great
Great teacher explains everything clearly tests and quizzes are easy; however she grades essay tough. I would definitely take her again; one of ASU's best.
Okay, if you have heard that she is easy...wrong. BUT if you know the secret to passing then you can do fine. DO EVERYTHING HER WAY!!! she is the kind of engl professor that is "my way or the high way" she give u an outline for papers so just write exactly what she says and youll do great. On tests and quizzes she expects you to memorize facts.
You NEED to read before class - she quizzes on the reading almost daily - just consistent enough that you best have read - her lectures are brilliant - tells you EXACTLY what you need to know for the test - review prior and you'll do fine. Great teacher! HIGHLY recommended!
Not an easy A, but probably one of the best humanities teachers. I recommend accually reading because while sparknotes might help you pass the in class quizzes..there are quotes on the test from the readings. Test are matching and are fair. Quizzes you at least once a week on readings and they can be tricky but if you read you should get an A or B
Wonderful
She is a very helpful and friendly teacher. Willing to go the extra mile. GRADES ESSAYS REALLY HARD. I took AP Lit in high school and I have yet to get an A on an essay. She has a formula for writing essays that is pretty simple, but she grades essays REALLY HARD. Has reading quizzes (easy) and grammar tests (easy). Extra credit available.
Great teacher. I had her for 1101 last year. If you follow her way of writing you will do great. She explains exactly what she wants. Just do what she says and you'll get a good grade. Make sure to read because there is almost always a quiz. But if you actualy read then you'll do fine. Pretty easy tests too. I would say TAKE HER
Had her 2001 and 2002 and she is the best Humanities teacher! I highly recommended her! Very clear, organized, and helpful! Would take her again in heartbeat
DON"T TAKE HER! She's such a hard teacher! We didn't do anything the first weeks of class. then after it's too late to drop the class with a WP, she piles on the crap and is so unhelpful!
Good Teacher and lectures are great! Quizzes you everyday on the readings (which is very high school). Dosent prep well for the midterm/final essay (she leaves like 5min at the end of class)most of the time she'll stick to only testing you on whats in yellow on her powerpts.whats not in yellow is sometimes an extra credit question on the test!
Very strict with essays! If you are good at writing essays, definitly take. Her tests and quizes are SUPER easy. I made As on just about all of them. When you start preparing for the exit essay, LISTEN TO HER ADVICE!!! She is 100% correct!
if you're looking for an easy a, keep looking. if you want a teacher that will help you improve, take her. If you put in the work she will help you not only pass, but gain skills that will help you in all of your future classes. She will see your potential and wont settle for anything less than your best. it doesn't hurt that she's gorgeous either.

Tough grader when it comes to essays! I made a 68 on my rough draft final essay, and followed all her instructions on corrections and got an 80 on the final draft! So follow her directions and that will help. Also quizzes are very easy so always read the short assignments and it will boost your grade. Very nice and funny teacher.
She wants her essays written a specific way, but once you get the "formula" right, it's a piece of cake. She's really helpful when correcting your essays and she's really easy to contact and meet with. Great teacher, I made a C, but didn't do the readings and I learned a lot about writing essays and I would recommend her for anyone.
Professor Cato was very nice, organized, clear in her teaching, but her tests and quizzes are not easy. She likes to ask questions on the smallest details in the story and I think it's to make sure you read it. If you don't understand the stories, read spark notes, then go back and read the story from the book. It makes the stories make more sense.
I simply cannot believe that the oldest person in the class acts the worst. I don't know what she did at her last job. Maybe she is on vacation or something.
Great professor. Yes she does have a smart attitude about her but you have to take it with a grain of salt. She is a very nice woman and will be glad to talk to her students outside of class. Made the reading material easy to understand and really helped out with the final essays.
This is an intelligent teacher. She is willing to help you outside of class and tells you exactly what she's looking for in essays. She IS a tough grader when it comes to essays! Tests and quizzes are easy! So please do read! She grades everything strictly. I passed her, but it wasn't easy!
Took her for both humanities. Shes pretty easy. As long as you pay attention and take notes. I suggest doing the reading or at least 85% cause she quizzes you on it... and the quizzes suck. Other then that awesome teacher that gives you more than enough chance to pass.
She is so hard and she wants paper written in a specific format. Even when you follow the format it is still not good enough. She does not give A's or anything over an 85. I would not reccomend her to anyone. Take my word for it or regret like I did.
She was a tough teacher but she was also helpful and told you what you need to do to get a good grade on papers. Make sure to do the readings because she will quiz you on it and do the the homework because that's the format of the tests. Super relaxed and I would definitely recommend taking her class.
Very hard professor, treats students like they are English majors. Impossible to get anything above an 85. Only gives you a week to revise rough draft of LRP which is not nearly enough time when she basically wants you to rewrite the whole paper. Interesting class periods. Way too strict on requirements for papers; does not allow for creativity.
She's wonderful. Very helpful. Clear with what she wants, and when she tells you what she expects in your papers, please deliver. Test and quizzes are fairly easy as long as you read, somewhat!
Professor Cato is awesome! It is a hard class only if you make it hard. She helped me improve my writing tremedously and offers alot of extra credit opportunities. Just do what she asks and ask for help if you need it.She is great teacher and I wish my schedule permitted me to take her for ENGL 1102. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Professor Cato is a sassy English teacher who loves Diet Coke, and who is also great at what she does. She is very helpful when it comes time to write papers and gives you great feedback. Definitely take her!
GREAT professor. Love the comment below- she is indeed sassy and a lover of Diet Coke. :-) On a more related note, she gives students everything they need to succeed. Her assigned readings are always worthwhile, and she grades fairly. Definitely wants you to succeed and gives great feedback. If you like lit, you should love her.
Cato is hard on her essays -- she grades them very strictly. But in Humanities, she's extremely clear on concepts and is very helpful understanding other aspects to the class. However, for Humanities, she also tends to do out-of-class essays. She grades these a lot harder, but if you prefer this over in-class essays, she's awesome.
While P. Cato is a genius at what she does, she gives minimal time to write essays. She is an extremely tough grader on essays but is slightly more lenient on tests. I sought help on a particular essay and all cries for help were met with annoyance and no time spent helping me. If you think you're good at writing get ready for a rude awakening.
She is a fairly strict grader on essays, but she leaves a great amount of comments on each essay you write while getting them back to you very quickly. If you really pay attention to her comments and try your best to fix your writing problems, you should have no problem with her class. She is great at what she does, I recommend taking her!
Helpful. Will read and give notes on essays before due date. She emails you right back.
Instead of ACTUALLY being taught how to properly write papers, the first half the semester we did not stay in class for more that 10 minutes and by midterm we were pushing out papers like crazy. She did not give anything I wrote above a 78 and I went to her office weekly seeking help and by the end of the semester, she ignored all of my emails.
She is a good teacher, I was lucky enough to have her as a principal at my terrible high school. In our inquiry class, she lectured a lot and occasionally we did group work. Take her for inquiry. Mind you, she is not always readily helpful as a professor, and she seems to sometimes get absent-minded. Other than that, the class is a breeze.
Her tests are not multiple choice but you have to write your answer out. PAY ATTENTION TO EVERYTHING she says because her tests come from her lectures. Even though it's a writing class, you will do readings and there will be pop quizzes. Watch her feedback and use it.
Do not ever take this class. Gives tests solely based off of her "rules" for writing and completely changes everything you've ever known about how to write an essay. Don't bother trying to email her to get help, she wont respond. Gives a lot of feedback on papers, but it doesn't help because you cant even read her handwriting. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
Make sure you read the articles she assigns. You will most likely have a pop quiz over them and those articles will turn into essay questions. Also, forget about getting back useful feedback... you can't even read her handwriting.
I have heard for Humanities she's a good teacher BUT I had her for English 1101 and it was so hard. She's confusing & is such a tough grader on papers. Her feedback is hard to understand and her tests are based off her lectures of her personal "english rules". I had to work my butt off to make C's on papers. Try to avoid having her for 1101!!!!
Professor Cato is a very intelligent person. She knows a lot about writing. However, she is SO tough on essays. She gives you about a week to work on them. There are a lot of articles to read before the essays. Be sure that if you take her you are ready to read a lot and ready to conform to her english rules....
Her test are basically her opionions on writing. Her essay are on very tough subjects & she grades hard on top of that... If you're not a good writer I don't encourage taking her class.
Professor Cato is awesome! Although English has always been a tough subject for me, she showed me a completely whole new writing style I had not been introduced to yet. If you have a question she won't just simply answer, she'll further explain the answer just to make sure you 100% understand the material of this course. & Her notes are amazing.
She teaches the class according to her own opinions, not the curriculum. She won't tell you anything useful that you would've needed to know for a test until after you've had it. I wouldn't recommend taking her unless you're up for a challenge.
I actually enjoyed her class as a whole. The only thing that gets underneath my skin with her is how hard she grades her papers. Other than that, she's awesome. Recommend if you enjoy English.
I took her class again! Even though she is a tough grader with papers, she inspired me to push harder than any other professor that I met thus far. Take her if you love to challenge yourself!
She's extremely difficult and only gives you a few assignments. Mostly papers and one took a month and a half for her to grade. She takes forever to grade things and she grades them extremely hard. If you do not do exactly what she says in your papers, you will fail. Class attendance isn't mandatory, but if you don't go you'll fail.
Class feels more like a high school literature class. We read the poems, come to class, and discuss in groups. The only assignments in the gradebook were tests and essays. Can be harsh on essay grades. Tests are styled oddly and are a lot harder than need be.
I took English 1102:Children's gothic literature. The readings were very confusing that she makes you correlate to both books. The ESSAYS were terrible no one makes above a 78 on the first one, and these are what your grade consist of, there are 3 essays in all. The feedback is dancing around what needs to be done. Hardest class of my semester
Professor Cato does an amazing job and is very helpful! She is not easy but she tells what you need to be prepared for test and quizzes. The reading content is not easy but is essential for writing the papers. Her comments really helped me to hone my writing skills and the course content was interesting and thought provoking. Overall great class.
Professor Cato grades particularly hard, and works directly from the text. If you aren't reading you aren't going to pass the tests and your essays will not satisfy her. Her lectures are tedious to sit through, as she becomes repetitive. I would suggest taking another 1101 professor.
Cato's lectures are all the same. She grades very harshly, but is very clear about what she expects. If you end up having her, buy the book & READ it because her tests are rough & she teaches directly out of the book. When it comes to essays, email her your drafts because she will edit it (even multiple times). If you work hard, you can pass.
It's a boring class but easy to pass if you read the text and show up for the quiz. Test are very easy. They are the quizzes and the PowerPoint. She gives clear guidelines for the essay and if you follow them she grades genoriously. She's very kind and seems to care about how you feel. Talk to her if you have issues. Group project was easy.
Professor Cato is AMAZING!!! I would defiantly recommend taking her! She is the best and so sweet! I LOVED HER!!!!
She grades the essays extremely hard and gives feedback that is very vague. She repeats the same lecture over and over and hopes you understand why your grade continues to drop. If you read the book assigned you will do fine on the quizzes, but this will only keep you at a C after those essays.
She is a tough grader!!!! I don't think I got a single A or B. however when it came time for grades to be due I pass the class with an A. I have no idea how but I did. She is always willing to help and responds to emails with good feedback and advice. I did become a better writer taking this 1101 class and I'm forever grateful for that
BEST ONLINE PROF! I had her for ENGL 1101 & 1102 and they were the easiest online class I've ever taken.I heard she was strict with her reg class though... TAKE HER ONLINE! Only three 3-5 page essays and a few discussion posts and that's it! As long as you follow the rubric (which is the same for all essays) you easily make an A+. Super easy grader
Dr. Cato was a very good English 1102 professor. I very much enjoyed her class. She has a great caring personality and is very easy to talk to. If you do not care about the class and put no effort then it will reflect in your grade. She does not assign a lot of homework or papers, but you will need to use the readings as references and quotes.
only had 6 grades all semester long and all of them were essays. no homeworks, assignments or anything else to boost your grades up if you are a bad writer. has a very weird sense of humor. will lead you on to think that the class will be a piece of cake. it's not
She is caring and wants her students to do well! She is clear about what she wants done and usually extends the due date by like 2 days. She also lets you out class a few minutes early. Her essays are manageable but I wasn't a big fan of the theme for her class, Children's Gothic.
I was a little uneasy about taking Professor Cato's class after reading her ratings on here, but I can assure you that taking her class was no mistake. I definitely recommend her! She gives great feedback on your papers and was so nice to all of her students. We only had 6 readings the entire semester, and they were not long or hard to understand.
I was in her online section. She gives really great feedback, especially if you take initiative and reach out to her. She was incredibly patient and kind when campus closed. Be sure to follow the specific writing rules and preferences and really consider her comments.
Expects for the work to be done in a short link of time. She isnt really specific on what she actually wants. Take anybody but her
Was told she was caring but didnt seem to care too much. Dont get sick when you take her ... youll more than likely be dropped regardless if you have a note or not.
I am in her online class, and she is great. We only had 3 essays this semester and discussion posts every week that are usually easy. She also gives great feedback on rough drafts which really helped me. I plan on taking her again next semester.
Felt the requirements were too high for an 1101 class. Hard grader. There are 3 papers, a rough and final draft for each, as well as a small assignment each week. I got almost the same grade on every draft i submitted, even after following her feedback paragraph by paragraph, which made me unsure if she was grading fairly. The bar is just too high.
Professor Cato was one of the best english teachers ive ever had. At first, she seemed like a tough grader but she actually gave really good feed back. The topics were kinda difficult to understand, but she responds very quickly to emails and is willing to help you.
Professor Cato gives great feedback on rough drafts, but the content is challenging. She takes attendance by completion of discussion posts and late assignments. It may be challenging, but if you do the work you should get a decent grade. She hopes her students will go to her for help on essays since the class is online. I recommend taking her.
A difficult teacher, but if you spend time working on her essays you will get the grade you desire.
Had her for 1101 and she really isnt helpful at she says shell give you feedback but her feedback isnt helpful even after I got good feedback I still got the same grades as before. Her bar is too high for an online class
I would recommend professor Cato. Given that the course was asynchronous it was extremely useful that she stayed in constant contact with several emails a week, reminders for assignments, and thorough feedback on submitted assignments. She assisted me with a zoom meeting in which she was open to any and all questions regarding the material.
DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!! Stay away
Prof Cato is always available to help you! My first rough draft grade was not what I had excepted and I met with her and she was extremely helpful. She ensured I understood the expectations and worked with me so I could succeed. The biggest thing is you should MEET WITH HER to discuss feedback if you're confused. She is great!
Professor Cato is a very tough grader considering it is an entry level composition class. She posts the textbook pages on D2L so you do not have to buy the book. Your essays make up the majority of your grade and she offers extra credit if you work with the writing center. Meet with her and fix all the feedback she gives you and you will be fine.
Her feedback on papers was not helpful at all
Do not to take this instructor unless you want to fail or ended up receiving unsatisfactory grade. Extremely difficult and rude. Even if you visit during her office hours to work on your essay with her, she will still give me below 70 grade for your essay. Waste of time! abusive of power as instructor. Do not care about students at all.
Stay away from this professor! Despite my hard work, attending office hours, and following feedback, my grade never exceeded a C. Frustrating and demotivating, her grading seemed arbitrary and seeking help yielded no improvement. Unsatisfactory overall.
I must say that it was an incredibly frustrating and disappointing experience. If you're considering enrolling in this class, be prepared to already possess a professional level of writing skill because that seems to be the only expectation this professor has.
I must say that it was an incredibly frustrating and disappointing experience. If you're considering enrolling in this class, be prepared to already possess a professional level of writing skill because that seems to be the only expectation Professor Cato has.
The class was very easy. I took her online class as a dual enrolled student and it was by far one of my easiest classes. There was one essay that we kept building on throughout the entire semester. If writing comes naturally to you, take her class. Her feedbacks were very helpful and easy to adjust to.
I took this English 1101 class online and felt her grading was unclear. She does not give comprehensive feedback and expects a previously acquired professional writing style. Overall, I think she is extremely unprofessional and lacks any qualities of a good professor.
She does discussion posts for attendance, fairly easy. As for the papers... an actual nightmare. It's all the same paper we build upon for the whole semester, but her grading is so confusing. I've given it my all, attended CWE, emailed her, fixed all her comments. SMALLEST improvement after doing everything she's told me. Grading is HARSH!!!!!
She's always willing to reach out. Responds fast and gives feedback. Although, I cannot stand this course with her as the professor. It's the same essay the whole semester, but she grades so poorly. I do all her corrections, yet there's always 10 more errors she missed for the next feedback. I'm not stupid, this class makes me feel stupid.
The grading is ridiculous. We had the same prompt all semester long and her feedback made no sense. Avoid this professor!
I had her for an online asynchronous class. Her feedback on essays was superb and helped my writing style a lot. She was very friendly and always willing to answer questions in depth. Pay attention, read her comments, and make the changes and you will do very well.
I have seen a lot of reviews saying that this professor does not give clear feedback, but that is not true in my case. We built on one essay the entire semester and I only had to make corrections once because of her advice. Discussion posts for attendance. Very caring, cut down class content load after hurricane damage. Would take again.
I wasn't a big fan of this professor. We built on one essay the entire semester which was incredibly frustrating. When talking about the feedback she gave me I found her kind of rude and condescending. She has extremely specific expectations for how you should write your essay.
Very rude when I asked very respectful questions about things I was unclear of. The class is literally 4 grades of the exact same paper, and she never made it clear what I did wrong. She never put grades in the grade book so I had no idea if I should drop the class without fail. Just would never recommend this professor. Very unprofessional.
This class with Professor Cato was a real struggle. The grading was harsh and inconsistent, even with constant feedback and revisions. However, using unstuck ai and other study tools helped me prepare for the challenging assignments.
I do not recommend her! She runs around in circles while trying to explain the instructions, its like she doesn't even know the answers herself. If your work is not what she would do, you will get a bad grade. Feedback is horrible and inconsistent! She will tell you one thing and then tell you that is wrong in your feedback... she is tough!
My favorite English class I've been in. The Native American topic was so interesting, and Cato's feedback really helped me write better essays. It's not a very difficult class.. it's just not an easy class. If you expect a good grade by putting in zero work, that's your problem. Cato is very clear on what to fix in the essays, so just listen.
If you want a participation A, take this instructor. Had her for two different classes and she gives no feedback at all and it appears that if you just submit something she will give you an A. I honestly quit trying halfway through and still got A's. Trust me when I say that was not A level writing.
I have no idea what her grading or teaching style is, but I got an A. That's it, just the one A when grades were posted at the end of the semester. No feedback, no grades, no responses. Just an A at the end. Great if you want to boost your GPA, awful if you actually want to learn something.
She does not let you know your grade. I am more than halfway through the course and have no grades. She takes forever to respond to emails. Grading criteria not provided. Instructions mostly clear. Grade only comes from 3 essays and a few discussion posts. Essays require to watch multiple movies, TV shows AND readings from the 1960s. Avoid if able.
This teacher doesn't communicate. It's like she's ignoring your emails. During the entire course, she only grades a few assignments, which makes you think that all your hard work is worthless. Avoid her. So many complaints about her and nothing changes.
This was just awful! Spent a lot of time writing a paper just for her to mark it ALL wrong. Had to watch a lot of tv shows and movies and it was honestly just too much. Never had grades posted. Also seemed rude when discussing my paper. Do not take this class.
Please I'm begging you avoid if possible. She takes forever to grade. She just crosses out most of your essay and calls it a structure problem then when you fix it she gives you the same grade. She takes the smallest issues and blows them out of proportion. Please void this teacher half the class dropped at the mid term point. Save your GPA!!!
I'm a student who has never struggled in an English class, but this professor made it difficult for me to understand what exactly she was looking for in her assignments. Her feedback was always lacking and her communication was poor. She's one of those professors who expects you to write exactly what she would, which is ridiculous.
WORST PROFFESSOR EVER
The English 1101 class online was at first challenging because the confusion of the criteria and what your essays are being graded on, but towards the end of the semester, it became easier to understand what was expected and I excelled as a writer by the end of the semester. Discussion posts are required nearly every week!
I was very frustrated with this class because I truly tried to succeed. Feedback was unclear and unhelpful, communication was lacking, and grading felt extremely harsh. Even after getting help from tutors, my grades did not improve. Based on my experience, I would NOT recommend having her as a professor.
