Often doesn't show up for lectures (annoying). Test striaght form text book.
Cancelled 2 classes, tested on missed lectures. Vague lectures
She was cool to listen to!
what a bozo...
Horrible teacher, cancelled 3 classes, let us out 2 hours before class ended! F
what is with the moo moos?
speaks too quickly, not helpful at all, tests are right out of the book
She was so nice and helpful! I got an A+ in her class! She was great but cancells a lot of classes
i like her she's cool
Used only 75% of class time. Cancled a class, showed up late a few times, cut class short and brought her kids to class once. Lets you leave after short 1 1/2 hour tests *mulitple choice*(3 hour class)Teaches from the book, read the chapter before class!
This clown shows up to about 50% the classes and is boring to listen to.
She is one of the best psychology profs by far. anybody that didn't like her class obviously isn't interested in what psychology is really about. who cares if she cancels classes she has kids that she needs to take care of!
Cancels classes! Not a teacher I would like to have again.
i've had her for 2 classes- never a problem, she through- tells you what you need to know- m/c tests are based on major concepts& definitions from text. the best& most interesting pysch teach i've ever had!make class interesting& interactive.
biggest **** does not know how to teach . test are out of thin air. never shows up when she has to teach two chapter i dont think she knows how to teach. comes up with stupid excuses on why she is not there everytime she has 2 chapter to teach
Lectures stright out of text, material in tests often are questionable. Extremely picky marker, expects far too much within a 2 hour exam.
She sucks!!!! She missed all of the classes and screwed everyone who wanted to take any other psych class over because she DID NOT TEACH ANYTHING! Do not take her class!!! I mean what prof shows up w/ a black eye and calls it an accident?

She's a very go-easy-on-students type of prof. She's not rigid like other instructor at all. Please don't think that she 2 misses classes means she's not a teacher.

Valerie Dare......who is that? She was never there.........I dont think I learned a thing in that class......how could I there was no teacher. Valerie, just quit your teaching job its obvious that your practice is taking up to much time.
Her lectures seemed almost like the audio version of the text so it was a bit boring.
Seemed to have a really hard time getting to class. Still, the tests were easy if you've read the book. All the people who **** about the class are just upset because they didn't get their hand held. I got an A just from reading the book and listening when she did show up.
I never had the experience of her not showing up to class. I liked her.
She didn't have any problems with attendance in the class that I took. I liked her, the lectures were very interesting, and she was a good teacher. The only problem I had was that the test questions were a little convoluted.
She is the reason I don't care about psych. Try and stay away from her classes.
So what, she didn't come to class. All our marks were based on our text. Once you realize you're on your own it isn't that hard. Not a strict or rigid person. If all I have to do is read and ther'es no stick up your a#s, then your a good prof in my books.
Valerie may be a nice person, but as a Prof SHE IS HORRIBLE! I would not recommend taking any classes with her,she doesnt go over like 95%of the concepts that are on the tests & her way of teaching is by asking questions, she'll take 1 class to go over a whole chapter.Youd be better off teaching yourself cuz u could learn more stuff on ur own time!
She is nice, but her tests are hard, regardless if you study and read the textbook M/c and short answers. The test questions are very detailed (IE: to recall research findings) And to connect concept with examples, which is not bad, except the examples are so detain and often not relevant to concept. Absolutely NOT even 1 easy answer. DONT RECOMMEN
she is an awful teacher. Her lectures are pointless. All she does is takes bits from the text book and explains them to a certain degree. She gives her students weird looks when students ask questions. She always shows up late to class. She has a funny way of marking her exams.
hard tests, even if you read the text the tests are still difficult. She dictates her notes, which aren't actually notes. She just uses examples from some of the concepts in the text. You have to rely a lot on the text to get through her tests. I would not recommend her. If you take a class with her, I only have one thing to say...GOOD LUCK!
didn't show up twice, usually late, (even for the final exam), talked on her cell phone during class. Do not recommend her.
Lectures only cover a little bit of the course material. Definately read the WHOLE text along with the study guide and online tests. Tests were multiple choice and difficult. Easy to talk to when 1-on-1. understanding if having 'issues'. I would take her again however I would need to really work hard to do well.
she is difficult tries to be easy and help but not is hard and when notes dictates hard marker annoying and she's usually late brags about her phd and is not nice but acts like it when it comes time to her evaluation, but notes okay read the text sguide and net q's but good luck even then
if she could be more professional and organized she would be a top notch prof.
Valerie dare is the worst teacher I have ever had. Her test are extremely hard, her notes are all over the place & she barley teaches anything from the textbook, which u also have to know. Im a good student & study lots but there is just too much information that she doesn’t teach u that you have to know. Good luck 2 those who take this
i have mixed feelings about valerie. Her lectures have little to nothing to do with her exams, all of which i failed miserably even though im usually a good student and read the textbook back to front. She is approachable, but self-centered at the same time. Long story short i dropped her class a month from the end because of those 6 ? 7? 8? exams.
As long as you read the book you'll be fine, so attendance is not a must. She's kinda picky about short-answer questions. Brags a lot about her family and practice.
participation is recorded, other than the participation mark for attendance, there is no need to attend class. notes are rarely helpfull. take your own notes from the text because the tests cover far more than class notes, class notes are taken directly from text.

Tests are difficult, m/c and short answer questions. Her lectures are getting better using, pp, clickers, with video. not enough time spent on lectures. too much time spent on oral presentations. no paper this semester. good overall, easy disposition...learned lots.
Val is a an amazing prof and person. She cares for her students, personally and academically. She is always there to help. He classes are interactive so they are fun to go to. The presentations were a bit much this semester, but overall the class was worth while. She is not exactly easy, but she is fair and if you work hard, you will do well.
Val is a great instructor. Her notes are crystal clear, her tests are fair, and her classes are fun and interesting. I would definately take her class again and would highly recommend her.
An interesting course.
great
Class is pretty fun, and teacher is nice when teaching the class. But not is taught in class, but you have to go and read the text yourself. If you suck in M/C which I do, than you are pretty much screwed. Essay is usually marked by the asian lab teacher, and shes a super hard marker, even one extra spot, she will take off a grade.
I enjoyed Valerie's lectures when I took her class a year ago, but her tests are unfair. She tests you on every fluffy textbook sidebar, and doesn't cover most material in class. Her m/c questions are unreasonably tricky. I memorized the text, and aced the short answer questions, but struggled on the ambiguous m/c. And Val, SFU PSYC is not harder.
I looked forward to this class every week. You have to go, because she does participation every class. The tests are fair and reading the text book is mandatory to do well on the tests. No midterm, no final... it was a beautiful thing. she is a good teacher.
bleh ... she needs to be more organized !
Valerie is a very thoughtful and insightful instructor. I highly recommend her.
I found her class to be extremely easy. always got 19/20, 20/20 on the written section, and as long as you stud your notes (which are straight out of the text) you'll do fine, I ended up with an A and I didn't even try that hard :). Oh and in child psych, there are student presentations as well.
She is fine and way she teach is not bad but she doesn't really care about her students..
Amazing psych teacher! Her classes are easy and she does this I-Clicker program which is awesome. I learned a lot in this class and she will go over the exams the next class so you can understand what you got wrong.
gosh. her lectures are dry. she favours the jocks in the front row, and the losers at the back she doesn't care about. she's impatient specially with students who ask questions.
Her lectures are straight out of the book: WORD FOR WORD. Even the examples she uses to so called "clarify" are the ones used in the text..but she does this lame clicker program thing which acts as attendance so you still have to go to class. Her teaching style lacks creativity and she lacks personality and compassion.
Took her for child psych and really enjoyed the class. The tests were quite easy if you studied the book and the study guide. Really enjoyed the classroom discussions too!
she cancelled a good portion of classes, partly due to her losing her voice (which was true) but still came late sometimes to class and never seemed very in control. her lectures ARE word for word from the book but you do still have to go (clickers). overall i'd say she acts pretty amature and needs to maybe go teach high school. easy A though.
She has certain favourites in the class. It wasn't hard to see that she was more engaged with some more than others. Also, if you are the last to hand back a test, expect to be the first called to get it back next class! She'll always hand back tests in the reverse order they were received. She makes it a point to let her class know this! BAD :(
Valerie's teaching method is very poor. She doesn't ever finish a set of notes on a chapter. Yes students are responsible for chapter readings, but professors are there to teach the content of them, or clarify/explain concepts. Valerie does a poor job at this. She doesn't allot much time for any questions regarding teachings.
Valerie is not a good teacher at all. her tests are confusing although they are multiple choice but the quetions are not on stuff that has been studied. she teaches word for word from the textbook. classes are very boring and she makes class boring. would not recommend taking her
She is a terrible professor, fortunately it's not too difficult to get a B/B+ in the class. But her lectures are absolutely useless, maybe 5% of that will will be on the test and the other 95% will be extremely picky, minute details of the textbook (the chapters in this text are 40-70 pages long and each test covers 3-4 chapters). cont...
cont... I am normally a very good student but her ambiguous m/c questions really throw you off. Also as part of our presentation, you have to a do a little 5-page paper on your topic and hand that in...5 pages, for only 2% of your grade?! Basically, she sucks.
Lectures are interesting and the presentation is easy peasy. She is a nice woman but not a good teacher. The majority of the second half of classes consists of presentations, which is time we could be spending on lectures and actually learning material. Multiple choice questions are tricky and very specific.
She's a very sweet/funny woman who knows her stuff! But her multiple choice tests are harder than most. Very tricky questions. Paper marked fair. She uses i-clicker system (8% of mark) so if you miss classes you will loose marks. Won't be taking her again but she makes lectures less boring
LOVE HER!... Her m/c tests are difficult and MUST read text book & listen in her lectures. Very fun class to be in, she makes it easy to understand concept. I would recommend her.
lectures were pretty fun actually but the multiple choice test was rediculous, it was just straight nightmare
Contrary to what I've heard from most people, I didn't find her m/c questions too difficult. They're more about grasping the concepts involved than pure rote memorization, which is a good incentive to really learn. Unfortunately, there's no real additional material during lectures, as she bases them entirely on the textbook involved.
tricky MC,and doesn't lecture the whole chapter but expects u to read it...also, a few ppl in my class noticed she would shoot dirty looks to certain ppl that are late..but not to others who might come in even later. She missed 3 classes( due to illness) yet still tests us on the chapters we didnt cover.
WORST PROF EVER. She gets defensive about things and doesn't seem to really care about teaching. If u can avoid having a class with her, i'd suggest to avoid her classes. She is very picky and strict. If you don't answr questions EXACTLY how she wants them, u will not get marks even if the answer is proven 100% correct.
i thought that she was good at explaining things. i got my an A on my presentation and i completed it in one night. she is funny and helpful. she definitely konws what she is talking about
Her multiple choice tests are so confusing and she picks the worst questions to test on. Her classes are all powerpoints, so make sure to read the textbook. Tons of students tried to rebute some of the answers for the mc tests but she didnt change anything. called in sick 3 times.
Great Prof. I dont see how people can complain about her tests. If you read the text and take notes in her lectures you should have no problem getting at least 90% on them.
Professor Dare is a very thoughtful and caring person, especially if you put effort in class. She is approachable in and outside of the classroom. Although people argue that her MC tests are hard b/c they are more about concepts, they aren't bad if you study and know the material. Also show how you are trying and she is very flexible with grades!
Valerie is a caring woman who is very interested in Psychology and can give you a boatload of knowledge! I found her very interesting to listen to and she gives easy participation marks. Her tests are not the easiest but if you actually try to do well, you will succeed. My only criticism is the group research paper.
Excellent professor! I am enjoying her class so far and I think that she really cares for her students and that she wants everyone to succeed. Participation and homeworks can boost up your grade! Her exams make you think, but if you read the textbook and do the practice quizzes online, you will do fine.
Such a great professor! She genuinely cares about her students wants every one to succeed. Her tests are simple if you do the homework assignments and use the online resources. I wish I could have her for every psych class! Her assignments are straight forward and she's a very fair marker. Made me love psych again :)
Valerie was a good prof! She basically breaks down and summarizes the chapters in the textbook, into her powerpoints and reads off the slides/gives examples. She's very clear. She also uses launchpad for homework! 3 exams total. She's very nice and responds to her emails. Just as long as you read the book and listen in lecture, you'll do fine
She's a great prof, very clear and knowledgeable. Know the material and apply it and you'll do great.
Valerie is a tough grader, but after exams she'll go over every question in class and omit questions that a lot of people struggled with, which I liked. Attendance is mandatory. I left every class having learned a lot, but you still have to read the textbook if you want to get a good grade. Be careful citing sources, she takes that very seriously.
Valerie was a really good prof. She is very clear on instructions and will help when needed. Her test are not difficult if you pay attention, do your readings and complete your launch pads. Valarie is a very nice person. I would take her class again.
I had a bad experience with this instructor. I didn't find her to be helpful ( ex: emailing her saying I didn't receive code for exam, she replies 'I sent it to u' ) Also saw others on our online forum having issues and she would reply unhelpful and sometimes petty ('nobody else seemed to have a problem') If you miss 1 assignment can't do next one
Valerie has a system to her class. I found it thoroughly enjoyable! Everything you need to pass her exams are in the textbook and on your launch pad assignments. On the launchpad are quizzes you can take and retake, flashcards to help memorize definitions, and videos to watch! I swear, her teaching method should be a standard throughout.
I had a really bad experience with this prof. Her exams are really hard. She replies emails With 1-2 words only. Reads off slides n expects you to read the rest. Very unclear and confusing prof. I wouldnt recommend her at all.
I loved having Valerie Dare as a prof! Her lectures are engaging. Some people say her exams are difficult, but i did not find this to be the case. If you attend lectures and use Launchpad learning curves and quizzes to study/ understand the material you will be fine. I absolutely recommend her.
I took Psych1200 online with her and it was easy if you dont mind teaching yourself because shes lazy. Really all you have to do is read and you will pass her exams. Unreliable when it comes to emailing and doesnt care about her students. She marks easy and exams are fine. Two APA papers on summarizing an article from multiple choices.
Took Psych 1200 online with her Fall 2018 and had a terrible experience. She is super vague about her expectations. She doesn't reply to questions in a timely manner at all, and when she does, shes petty. Hug your textbook tight because its the only one teaching you in her class. Thankfully, the course is easy so I ended up with an excellent grade
Not the nicest teacher. Unprofessional attire (Tank-top + shorts). She is very intelligent in her field but not with students. She uses "Clickers" because apparently student don't know how to participate. I wouldn't take a class with her again unless you are cool with reading a textbook and doing your own thing.
Valerie is not very approachable at all, but she's a good prof nonetheless. Do the readings and Launchpad assignments (they're worth a lot and they help you study). Come to lectures prepared. She isn't big on participation, but if you answer questions accurately she'll be impressed. Her stories are interesting.
Dont take this course
If you tell her whats the problem she might help you and you have to study by yourself
Valerie made sure that our questions were answered on the blackboard page and gave a lot of helpful information about the assignments. The textbook is 100% needed if taking this course online. If you do the readings, make notes and study off of them, the tests are really easy!
Teacher seems fine, the LaunchPad system is awful though, it asks questions that aren't even in the e-book and answering is a "good luck and pick" AT BEST. Exams were just non-sensical, median was in the 50's for the class. Don't take this course, trust me.
Get ready to read the text book and have her expect you to have read it. She's away a lot.
