To put it simply, she is a JERK! I do not like her personality one bit, that being said, she is a fair grader, the essays are not that difficult to write, and if you can deal with her personality, the class is fine.
she is the best teacher i have had at ASU. she is so willing to go out of her way to help you with your paper and is very inspiring when it comes to writing because she doesn't assign boring topics, instead has you look into what interests you. she gets you to break out of the boring typical 5 paragraph research essays and is about voice instead.
She is definately my fav. teacher at ASU so far. She argues with students in class a lot to help them leran to better defend their ideas but sometimes students take it as a personal attack. If you can understand the purpose of class discussions they can be VERY helpful. EASY EASY EASY class. I never got anything less than an A- on a paper!
Good teacher. She was funny and kept my interest. The debates and arguments in the class were definitely entertaining. Only 4 essays which aren't very hard, and no exams. I recommend her for sure.
knows her stuff.
Pretty good teacher. Essays aren't too hard but she definitely prefers students who start off as bad writers and "improve". She has a kind of annoying personality, but she is still pretty nice if you need help. Not one of my favorite professors at ASU, but it's not a horrible class to take.
I don't like writing, but this class was actually interesting. She has authority over the class while allowing students to speak their mind. The writing exercises were really helpful. I feel like I genuinely can write more effectively after taking this class.
She was great. There are only 4 essays, and the peer reviews she has you do in class are very helpful. She is very creative and energetic. She seemed to know what she was talking about and made the essay-writing process less daunting. I HIGHLY recommend that you visit her in office hours for essay help. That was when I learned the most from her.
Finn is the greatest teacher i've ever had for English. She's so helpful in class, and she loves her students. Office hours are super helpful, i go every essay and she's more than willing to help. Great sense of humor, and loves to teach. I know there's a lot of english teacher's, you will love her class
She is Average. She contradicts what she says alot of the time and can be VEY rude to her students.
Great teacher. If you put in the effort and actually care about your papers (there are only 3 papers and no exams) you will get an awesome grade. Make sure you think before you speak too because she can bash/question you and if you can't take a teacher talking back, you won't last. Take her, you'll learn something.
I really liked having her as a Professor and thought she did a great job with this class.
Great teacher. There are only three essays, each one is done over a period of a month or so walking through brainstorming to peer reviews and then final draft which helps a lot. Overall not a bad course.
A great teacher, sometimes fun and always easy class. she sometimes makes fun of dum students and that always helps to pass a day.
Terrible instructor, her grading system is terrible. Theres only 4 things she grades, 3 essays, and responses, so if you do bad on one thing you already pretty much failed. You must buy the book and must attend. I personally got a tutor and had a creative writing major to help me and still failed. She grades terrible. Would not suggest to take her
At first i was not a fan of her at all. I got kicked out the second day of class for missing a reading but after a few weeks i loved her as a teacher. She is strict but clear and keeps the class entertained. Essays are easy and plenty of time to work on them. I enjoyed the class and never felt it was a hassle going. Oh and shes funny!
Don't recommend her. She will shoot you down if you ask her "dumb questions" or even questions regarding her syllabus. She acts extremely superior to her students and she tends to swear often in class, unprofessionally. She doesn't seem to care about her students and have a negative attitude. I don't suggest the class unless it's your only option.
I took a hybrid class with Finn and it was a mess. She doesn't explain assignments, doesn't explain her grading scale, and the semester is 7/8 of the way over and she only has one grade entered. You can do well in this course if you are a good writer, but don't take her unless you have to.
Avoid her at all costs! Unprofessional, unorganized, and unclear in what she expects. Attendance is mandatory, even if you have a doctors note she counts it, "an absence is an absence." Does not explain what she expects in papers, and does not describe the essay topics well. Grades unfairly. Take an english class with anyone else!
Do not take this professor! She is so strict & rude to her students. Very unorganized and grades terrible. Class is mandatory and even if you go to the hospital and have a doctors note and miss anything you still get an F for whatever you miss. She is probably the worst professor of my college life.
Horrible teacher. Very rude to students. Acts like she is so much better than any student of hers. Would not recommend her to anyone! Not clear with her assignments. DO NOT take her class.
I usually write nice and open-minded review about my professor, but her, she is completely narrow-minded and does not lift a finger to help her students. Her hybrid class was confusing. She is just not a nice professor. Never smiles, and makes you feel dumb...Makes you read your essay out loud for no reasons..anyways, I do NOT recommand her..
Her System of keeping attendance is horrid since she tends to make absences inaccurate, which has costed me the course. Luckily I retook the course a 2nd time with her and passed because I was determined to prove my own effort is what I needed. So you must not let her fail you even at the price of your dignity.
Her System of keeping attendance is horrid since she tends to make absences inaccurate, which has costed me the course. Luckily I retook the course a 2nd time with her and passed because I was determined to prove my own effort is what I needed.
Only has 3 essays to write, but they're all complex. Her homework consists of usually weekly assignments that build up to her essays. She has been extremely helpful during office hours. Doesn't take well to people interrupting her class for childish reasons. Small class and we all got to know each other better
I absolutely loved this class and this professor. She is amazing and really helpful, I went in for help multiple times and she gave great feedback! She is also really funny and witty but is also no nonsense.
Professor Finn was very clear in her expectations for our 3 essays, but not for the weekly one-page assignments. She kept asking us whether we understood the nature of the course and after reading her reviews on here it's clear why: she actually reads these and wants to improve herself and her teaching style. I respect her for being receptive.
I took Finn for WAC101 ENG101 and ENG102. She is brilliant. She is also very cynical. She reminds me of Hugh Laurie on the show house. If you cant take constructive criticism then don't take her class. DO NOT talk while she is talking and do not be late other than that she is awesome and i highly recommend her she's smart, you will learn something.
She was my only option for a hybrid class so I had to take her. Her essays confuse me so much so I have to work pretty hard to understand what I'm writing about. She does not explain things well. She's really boring at lectures. If you have other options, go with them. I only passed because I'm a writer and got help from other professors.
Valerie Finn is one of the worst teachers ever. She grades an English 102 class like a dissertation. She is unbelievably cold and believes she is superior to her students. If you're a good writer and want to take this course with her, do not, I repeat, do NOT take this course with her. Terrible teacher and a terrible person.
I originally dreaded having Professor Finn but after the first 2 weeks she won me over. She really encourages participation and wants to push you out of your comfort zone. Gives amazing feedback on your papers in class so don't be shy to ask questions. As long as you are respectful she won't be mean, however if not prepare to be made a fool.
Ms. Finn is an amazing instructor. She is a very helpful person when it comes to essay papers. She cares as long as you show you care!
The class is nothing special. show up, write what you have to write. A. Side note. She can be a jerk to her students. Definitely has an ego and can be opinionated. that is pretty much the only downside to her, but it made the class crap.
This fall semester with the professor Finn was one of the worst. She is extremely confusing and just Terrible. She has one of the worst grading system with only 3 essays which won't help you at all since she is a tough grader you are most likely to fail the course. She is weird and always puts you on blast in front of the class to read your paper.
Definitely one of my favorite professors. She doesn't waste your time, papers are short, only 4 pages, and all the assignments help you stay on track with essay progress. Strongly recommend that you take rough drafts to her during office hours because she tells you pretty much everything you need to fix to get the A.
For online class; be forewarned; you will be teaching yourself and doing a great deal of outside research on how to do a paper. Most of the handouts are incredibly vague and leave far too much to guess work. She is often quick to point out your errors, and not consider her own short comings when creating assignment pages. I would NOT recommend her.
not a good teacher, tough grader for ENG 102 and has some attitude.
No tests or quizzes only paper grades matter.
Easy if you are a good writter. I wrote every essay the week it was due and got %100. It is hard though if you dislike writting .
Before taking the class, I was a little bit nervous about it because of the reviews I read on here. Valerie is very helpful, understanding, and encouraging. You can't really go wrong in her class. She expects you to do your work and give effort. If you do those things, you will get an A. Really fun class! I learned a lot.
Too lazy to fix her blackboard, handouts, and syllabus. Looks like she really likes copying & pasting but can't be bothered to even type proper information. As such, I can't be bothered to give this woman a proper review. Boring at her best, and, insufferable at her worst.
Finn is amazing! Eng102 is a boring class and her essays are vague and can be hard but if you show you care and go to office hours she will practically do the essay for you. She has some snarky attitude but i loved that about her. She's pretty cool to talk to 1 on 1 and will always help. Phenomenal professor who makes you think hard
Papers are left extremely vague, hard to know exactly what she wants, THERE'S NO ABSOLUTELY NO RUBRIC OR SET GRADING STANDARD. She just slaps whatever letter grade she thinks you deserve. If you go to office hours she practically writes the essay for you, BUT office hours are always "full." Class was way too frustrating to enjoy. Avoid if possible.
Listened to the feedback she gave on my rough draft, made all the neccessary changes, and she still marked me down for the same things.
I took this class for my ENG102, I suggest if you can, take her for ENG101 and ENG102. She is kind of a tough grader with no rubric, but she is really smart and an amazing writer, and if you go and ask for her help, she will help you. She is snarky and she makes you work for your grade, but I learned so much, would definitely take her class again.
She only gave the class three grades for the entire semester. Not a big problem if you're an amazing writer, but she is a very, very hard grader. I would only take her as your professor if you like challenging yourself.
Very tough grader. She takes this class way too seriously. I had all A's except for this class and this is the class I put the most effort into. This class had 3 essays all worth 33% of the grade and thats it. She is not a respected teacher and did not work to build bonds with her students. I regretted very much picking her as a teacher.
She has a bit of an attitude at times but knows what she's talking about. The grading isn't too tough but you only have three essays in the grade book so you have to make them count. If you listen to her during lecture and have a somewhat strong background in research and in depth analysis you'll be more than fine!
Okay so basically you absolutely have to go into her office hours and get her feedback for at least the first essay. If she's not there for office hours email her your ideas and she will give pretty good feed back. She's tough and her office hours are a mad house and ridiculous, but you don't do any busy work so.
Entire grade was based on 3 papers, 4 pages each. There are a few little assignments, but they only count against you if you miss enough. Definitely possible to get As on all 3 if you pay attention in class. I never went to office hours because she sets aside time to give good feedback in class. Wouldn't say she's that strict.
Very vague class. I asked to go to the bathroom and she embarrassed me in front of the class for asking, the next class I went to go to the bathroom and she got mad at me for not asking. Bad at explaining assignments. One time she kicked the entire class out of the classroom cuz we didn't have a rough draft of a paper she didn't tell us about.
She is a very knowledgable and good teacher. She tends to be kinda extra sometimes & very aggressive in class. However, I would highly recommend taking each and every essay to her to look over. Also, the hybrid version of her class was SO NICE. You only come in once a week and write no more than a paragraph on Canvas for the second class.
This class is very simple. Assignments due on the day of class, usually a 250 word response that takes about 20 minutes that aren't graded, but count as your attendance. Then 3, 4 page papers that make up the entirety of your grade. She is a tough grader but the requirements are clear. Good lectures, and I would recommend going to office hours
Run of the mill ENG 101 class. The class is ok, the professor is alright. The lectures are taken up by her really trying to explain the assignments to her students, but some of the people just don't get anything. Turn in ok essays that show you put in effort, and you'll do fine.
I took ENG 102 Hybrid with Finn Fall of 2019 and it was a great class. The class is graded on a 4.0 scale based on only 3 essays each worth 33%. The first essay I got a 3.7. The second essay I got a 3.5. The last essay I got a 4.0 averaging to a 3.7 (A- for the class). Small submissions once a week on canvas for hybrid portion of class. 10/10
She should not be a professor. Condescending and rude. Blatantly disrespectful. Ideological. She does not talk to her students, she talks down to them. Assignments are not clear.
Took ENG 101 as a hybrid class. Entire grade is based off of 3 papers. I had to drop the class because the first two papers killed my grade. If you want to pass office hours are mandatory and get there early because she will spend the entire time with one student. Lectures were hard to listen to because she would tell everyone why they were wrong.
I regret not looking her up on rate my professor before taking her class. She is probably the worst teacher I have ever had, and that says a lot. She is rude to her students and does not really care about them. Your entire grade in the class is made up of only three essays, which she grades very harshly. Do NOT take her class.
She is rude and made me feel belittled and unworthy of learning.
She's condescending and will do little to accommodate your struggles. However, if you can't make her office hours, she'll arrange time with you. Class is based on 3 CREATIVE essays only! No research. No quotes. Can use "I" and "you" in essays. All evidence is based on YOUR OWN personal experiences. If you can use your imagination, take her class.
Very condescending. Grades off of three essays the whole semester and even if you put in a lot of effort she is NOT a forgiving grader. Approved my ideas and rough draft in class and then failed one of my essays on the idea that she okayed directly to me in the lecture.
Honestly, I don't recommend taking this professor. Though she is very knowledgeable, her explanations are always unclear. She told me she would fail me if I didn't start turning on my camera on Zoom class. Essays are actually rather simple, it is just the instructor that made the class more difficult and less enjoyable.
Hybrid class: meet once a week w assignments twice a week. ASU policy: fail if u miss more than 4 sessions; u better not skip (she makes it clear). Whole course revolves round prep for 3 essays, no fluff. Attend office hours; willing to help & gives great feedback that rly helped develop my essay. Class imo engaging & discussion interesting & deep
I like Professor Finn a lot, I recommend going to office hours if you have questions about essays she is very helpful. This class was easy-paced for me we met up once a week and there's homework due that day and on another day that week and that is it. There are only 3 essays in this class!
Professor Finn was a very difficult professor to work with. Her class isn't a lot of work, however, the course revolves around 3 essays that Professor Finn grades in a rigorous manner. In her syllabus, she states that there is no extra credit, and no going back to fix papers. Her personality can come off as rude, careless, and narcissistic.
There are only three essays in this class which sounds amazing but is not. She grades so harshly that you are lucky to get a 60% on an essay. She offers no extra credit and no essay revisions. Lectures came off as intrusive at some points by calling specific people out.
Professor Finn might fail your essay for sources she approved. She gives no feedback on rough drafts unless you attend office hours, where she might take 3 students max to review work. She also likes to call people out during class, just to say their ideas are wrong. Not to mention, she's a tough grader. Just choose another professor.
There are no grading criteria, so you have to go to class and figure out how to apply the examples she gives to your topic. I bombed the first paper so for the rest I picked simple topics that fit the sort of thing she described in class and was able to do better. Follow the exact guidelines and do exactly what she demonstrates in class to pass.
Such a hard grader for absolutely no reason, will shove the ASU library database down your throat, and is constantly going to be on you if you look the slightest bit distracted during what will be the most boring 75 minutes of your life.
As long as you are willing to do a zoom with her once or twice while writing your research paper you will get a guaranteed A+. Show her that you are willing to put in the work and she will give you everything you need. She sort of is a tough grader but thats why you go to online office hours. It was an easy A+.
I hated going to her class, she would call on random people to just embarrass people about their writing topic ideas. I wrote nothing but nonsense in my essays but managed to get a passing grade, just follow the writing rubric and use ASU data sources and you will be fine.
Professor Finn was one of the worst professors I had. She will not tell you what is expected from you for the papers. If you are able to sit through her 105-minute lectures you may be able to figure out what is needed; which is how I managed to end the class with an A. She also has a habit of calling on students just to invalidate their thoughts.
As long as you look at the guidelines for the essays closely and have her look at it at least once before submission you will do fine in the class. There are only 3 essays and an assignment every week. The lectures are boring but it's worth listening to her in them.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. Finn does not care about her students, not accommodating by any means. Her lectures consist of her spewing absolute nonsense, never gives clear directions. Very difficult to receive any feedback outside of office hours or at all, never met someone so unwilling to help students. Save yourself the frustration and don't enroll.
Do NOT take her class - way too many other professors to choose from. She gives little guidance other than just to insult you and is obsessed with the ASU library. I learned nothing in her class - she is absolutely terrible
Professor is extremely unhelpful and a tough grader.
She constantly asks for participation in class and will then immediately shut down a student's ideas or thoughts and replace them with her own. She is also way too pretentious and uses analogies that no one can understand.
I once dozed off for a minute BECAUSE HER LECTURES WERE SLOW AND BORING and she threatened to mark me absent, which would have caused me to fail the class. I have always been a great writer, and never stooped below an A in any English course, yet I struggled to maintain a low B. She grades assignments like we are graduate students.
Please, if you are reading this review, do NOT take her for any of your entry level English classes. She grades you like you are a professional writer and always threatens to mark you absent. I can hands down say she is the worst professor I have ever had at this school. Also, she's so boring I've almost fallen asleep in class multiple times.
I am incredibly disappointed with Professors Finn's unreasonable attendance policies. If you are taking the hybrid class for the flexibility of being able to get your work done throughout the week when you have time along with your other classes, reconsider. The attendance policy allows for 4 absences, that includes not turning homework in on time.
I love this class, and Professor Finn is great. I understand why many would be intimidated by Professor Finn, but I encourage everyone to attend her office hours; they help. Let the professor get to know you. This class helped me develop my writing skills, and the lectures are worth listening to. The assignments also helped create the essay.
This is probably the worst English class I have ever taken. She is condescending and will eye you down and call you out if you aren't a motionless robot for the duration of her meaningless lectures. She gives out no rubrics and her directions for the essays are everywhere. Do NOT take this class if you are sensitive or entry level.
Its my first year here at ASU and all my professors have been great, fun, and caring, EXCEPT THIS ONE. This is the kind of class thats hard to stay awake in. She doesn't even try to make things worthwhile, and kicked people out for using their phones. WHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE ARE ON THEIR PHONES?? I dropped the class, and i recommend u do too!
This was the worst English class I ever took and the lowest grade I ever got even though I put in more work than I should've. She never prepared for class and never used any lesson plans or slideshows, the whole class period was a waste, and she never had enough materials to fill the whole class period. Also only 3 things go in the gradebook...
On the first day she told the class that it was her first time teaching a freshman class so she had no idea what she was doing. Grading: did not make sense and when you try to ask her in class she said to go to her office hours but it was on a Thursday and the assignments were always due on Wednesdays so that was pointless.
She is very caring and passionate about the subject. If you go to her student hours she will tell you exactly what to fix about your essay to get a good grade. Assignments are graded on completion. Attendance isn't scored but she will drop you after 3 missed classes. I strongly recommend her student hours to ensure a good grade.
Had an A- throughout the semester until she randomly gave me a 60 on an essay (we only have 3) and I had to beg her to let me redo it. Even then she only let me pass with a 70, when I definitely could've gotten at least an 85 on this essay as it was the same quality and effort as my others. Super boring lectures, super strict, very cold.
