Do not take her class if you thrive on class participition. She, on more than one occasion, rudely attacted various students for helping one another understand a project that she explained poorly. Makes her students fear participation in class through humiliation. Not good, not good at all.

Pretty boring and dull
The only problem I had was that no matter what you answer in class, she will re-word what you have said and ask you if thats what you meant, at which point you must respond "yes". Aside from that, I thought she was one of the most intelligent, sharp, and witty teachers here. A strong-minded beautiful and empowered woman. Shes pretty hip too.
This teacher is the worst teacher i've ever had in my life!!! I've always hated English, but she completely made me despise it!!! She's boring, very hard, talks to you like your supposed to be einstien
I like her, she's a good teacher. Lots of fun and interesting things to do in her class. I would recommend her. Comes off bad at first, with her 9 page syllabis...
She is a difficult teacher because she seems disconnected and not very passionate but this is only a first impression. Her problem is that she explains things very quickly and with big words so sometimes I get a headache from trying to understand. Otherwize if you like to be challenged to raise your standards she is good and is very nice.
I found her class to be very encouraging. She does not talk down to students, rather she speaks to them as peers. Her comments on papers were clear and concise and led me in the right direction. I wish I could take WR 122 with her. I suggest taking this class if you tested high on the entrance exam and do not want to be treated like a kid.
The worst english teacher ever!! Extremely hard and explains everything in huge words!! She thinks she's the greatest english teacher, but she's just a ****!! Impossible to get more then a B in her class!!
If you are scared by an extensive vocabulary she is not the professor for you. However, if you want to be challenged regardless of your ability, Dr. Grey will help you improve your writing. She does allow one late assignment per term without penalty. Some of the assignments were abstract, but she would help w/ topic ideas or narrowing focus.
This was a difficult class. Her expectations are high and she will give you a lot of encouragement. This class is rewarding and I would recommend it. You will work hard and be rewarded.
Her class is so boring! Her hair in her face all of the time is a big distraction. She never just takes your answer when it's understandable so you have to elaborate on it and so it makes you not want to participate in class discussions. Overall she's an okay teacher but boring.
She is very strict!!! If you want to get a good gread, you should not take her class. I do not think that if you take her class, you will not improve your writing skill. Also, it is difficult to understand essays what do we need to write. Explanatiion is very complicated.
Definitely not a confidence-builder!
I think Dr. Grey is a wonderful teacher. She challenges you to open your mind to new concepts and ideas. She utilizes the text book in class and provides additional handouts that I have found very helpful. She makes you feel like she cares about what she's teaching and really has an interest in each students progress. I valued her feedback.
She is very strict and not very clear in her explanations. This class is pretty painful! I think it will be pretty tricky to get an A in her class. It also should be noted that she is not to free with the compliments.
She won't hold your hand. Your failures are your failures, and your success is yours alone. It will either be an amazing experience or the worst you've ever had. If you're open to her comments, you'll learn. Stubborn writers should probably look for another teacher who'll grade you for effort rather than skill. Just don't shut down with her.
Tough, but fair. Expects her students to prepare and perform. Helpful and very knowledgable.
ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE HARD INSTRUCTORS BUT USELESS. SHE GETS TOO DEEP IN HER WORLD OF WORDS AT A HIGH LEVEL AND NO STUDENT IS WELCOME THERE. ALSO, UNFAIR GRADER!! EVEN IF YOU WORK HARD, SHE WONT GIVE YOU WHAT YOU DESERVE. BAD, BAD, BAD! DO NOT TAKE HER.
This woman is AWFUL! She is just a talking text book, I may as well just be teaching this to myself. She doesn't know how to listen to students AT ALL. Twice I saw a student ask her something and she just stared at them blankly like she thought they were making a comment. Acted very condescending when I was seeking clarity about an assignment.
She was not the best teacher at all. Her routine was the same in class. We read four essays each night, discussed them in class, and then had essays that didn't relate very much to the readings and discussions. I was at a loss for words when she was so ambiguous about her instructions that I almost failed my final because of it. TERRIBLE INSTRUCTOR
She's a talking dictionary. She let her advanced vocab get in the way... The essays that we read didn't connect at all yet she expected us to write 6 page papers on how they connect. Lame... Her class was very dull.

This teacher is horrible. I didn't know if I was in WR122 or in English class. Her vocab is unnecessary and her reading requirements were too much. She even gave us a vocab final!!! What is that! Drop this class!
I was really looking forward to this class, until the first words out of her mouth had to do with politics. She allows her own political views to effect the way she grades papers. Just like others have stated she is extremely dull and very condescending. She needs to realize this is a 100 level writing course NOT a journalism class.
She's a hard teacher, but if you do your reading and your papers you'll get a lot out of the class. Maybe people thought it would be a blow-off, but it's not.
I hated this class. She talked down to students who had a different opinion then her. She would take what you say and restate it in "smarter" words. We had a midterm full of things she hadn't even taught. oh no, i have to give them a midterm, but I've wasted the past 4 weeks doing absolutely nothing.. don't take her- writing deserves better.
She is tough but, good at what she does. Great personality. Just complete your work and you will be fine. Learned a lot. The negatives on here are from slackers. just do your assigned work.
In her defense, I think she was a decent teacher. She addresses current issues, and I never got the impression that she was biased or narrow-minded. On the contrary, she talked a lot about some touchy subjects with professionalism and she has a refreshing vocabulary. Overall, if you're serious about improving your writing, this class will help you.
NOT a confidence builder, not even kidding. i will not take a class from her again. just say no.
well, she helped me a lot when i was out with walking pneumonia for a week. i wrote a paper when i had a 103 degree fever and only after i turned it in did i realize it made NO sense whatsoever. she gave me a second chance to write it and was really helpful, and i was very grateful.
I dropped this class after the first session. This instructor was rude, intimidating, and condescending. She seemed to be antagonistic to students with morals. She gave us a 20 minutes break, than gave us 2 reading assignments during it.
Dr. Grey is a very nice lady, but she is not a good writing professor. She is very monotone and hard to listen to during class. She is a very hard grader. I took writing 121 to improve my writing skills but all I got out of it was a bunch of readings and lectures that did not improve my writing skills. she is a tough grader.
If you're a whiny-assed punk that needs your hand held and you think you should get handed a good grade, this class isn't for you. Ms. Grey expects you to put out and grow as a writer, and if you follow her instruction and do what she asks, you will. I got an "A".
I have never disliked a class before, but this one makes it hard to go to. The midterms were hard and graded unfairly with questions on there that weren't discussed in the class. She plays favorites sometimes too. I can deal with a tough teacher with ease, but not an unfair one.
Terrible teacher, so hard to uderstand not very helpful!! do not take any of her classes
She is a nice person, but honestly is a horrible writing teacher. When you ask questions, she responds by using huge words that nobday even knows what they mean; she forces you to agree with her. Her assignments are not always clear, and she is monotone!
Love Dr. Grey. She is an amazing teacher and I got a lot out of the class. I just hope she teaches 122 and 123. Don't liten to the others on here. They wanted an easy A and did not get it.
Though I got an A (which I worked hard for and deserved), STAY AWAY FROM THIS TEACHER. She's rude, monotone, pushy, and has a huge ego (which is easily bruised). If you ask a question that disagrees with any of her beliefs she'll try and embarrass you in front of the class with big words to make herself feel better.
Beware, anyone that has this many discrepancies, dissensions, conflicts, clashes, contention, antagonism, contrariety, ingongruity and repugnance towards her students should stay away. A red flad is a red flag.
This is one of the worst teachers I have had so far in college. she grades things different than most teachers I have had. The way she operates is almost like she has a learning disabilty like this one english teacher at my high school. I would not recommend her to any one because she's just one of those people you dont want to have for a teacher.
She was SO boring. She basically read from a script during the entire class period... she eve paused for laughs which never came! She gave out too much work and it was very difficult to keep up.
A very bad teacher. I can't believe how much she "looks down" on her students. This is basically an essay writing class and she treats it like it's life or death. She is rude and can be vindictive when she grades. The worst kind of teacher, I'm really surprised PCC keeps her on the faculty. STAY AWAY!
Valerie Grey is a poor teacher. I looked through these ratings and here's the reality: she has the 43rd highest NUMBER OF RATINGS out of 1469 teachers (for PCC). Those ratings RANKED her at 1325 out of 1469. She's near the top of how many ratings teachers have, and near the bottom in the rankings. TAKE HER CLASS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
I understand that many students are intimidated by Dr. Grey. I believe she is an extremely intelligent woman and a challenging teacher. I very much enjoyed writing for her class, discussing current issues and receiving her in depth feedback. She may not be for everyone but she is very nice, helpful, and a strong teacher.
I belieive Professor Grey was amazing! While her class was extremely hard, show up to class, ask questions and read the chapters she assigns. I walked out with a B at the end of the term, which I don't believe I deserved because I had a missing assignment and earned a D on a quiz and got a B on one essay, a C on another. But I tried really hard!
I can't believe how many people said such terrible things about Dr. Grey. I honestly thought she was great. Just like others have said she is difficult. But she is very friendly, and easy to get along with. I love to communicate when I learn and she is perfect for that. She encourages discussion, and loves to hear what others think.Highly recommend
If you enjoy writing and want to increase your skill, she is a very knowledgeable teacher who can provide you with as much help as you want or need. However, if you are taking her class only because it is required, you will be much better off with a different teacher. Her feedback is constructive, but she does focus on skill much more than effort.
For more timid students, I can see that Valerie may seem intimidating and/or cold. However, there is personality under there that just needs to be brought out. Valerie is insanely intelligent and not only did I get great writing practice and feedback, I learned many very helpful argumentative skills. Definitely an instructor for serious students. A
This isn't an easy class, but it's college - not daycare. While you may be asking what the lectures have to do with the class, they are usually interesting subjects and class participation is always fun. Dr. Grey has a lot of bad reviews on here, and I can only imagine they are from people expecting an easy ride. A good college level class!
I loved Dr. Grey. I found her witty, intelligent, and very informative. I loved the lectures and conversations in class. You must read the material and take your work seriously. You will improve your vocabulary, and you'll come out of her class a better student. I highly recommend her. Thank you for making me a better writer, and a better student!
Dr Grey's explanations for the essay assignments are not at all clear. She contradicts herself and leaves the student confused about what, exactly, the assignment really is. Then, if a student asks for clarification about something, Dr Grey just tells them to read the syllabus. But the syllabus isn't clear, and she refuses to clarify.
Dr. Grey immensely improved my argumentative writing. She is extremely intelligent and an excellent editor and reviewer. Do the work, don't slack. I received help from her in the writing lab as well and she was always receptive to questions. I feel the people who have written negative comments did not want to work, this is college, do the work.
Dr. Grey is an excellent instructor. She will provide you with plenty of help if you need it in the writing lab. She does make her assignments clear, I am not sure why a previous poster would say such, class discussions are always awesome. You need to know and understand MLA, at this point all students should. READ the assigned material and book!
Shes overqualified and takes it out on the students.
I have enjoyed this class. It has been a lot of hard work for me, with lots of homework. Not an easy class but Valarie is an excellent instructor. The assigned readings have been fun and classroom discussions are always interesting. There are probably easier teachers but I recommend if you enjoy writing.
Easy class, but the teacher is disorganized and her lectures are meandering and impossible to follow. She has a bit of an arrogant streak and isn't afraid to lash out at students
Dr. Grey is the worst teacher on campus. She is unclear in her assignments, and looks down on her students. Take this class at your own risk!
I enjoyed this class and found Dr. Grey very helpful. It is not an easy A. Class discussions are interesting and thought provoking.
Dr. Grey is a fantastic teacher and has absolute made me a better writer. She does, however, expects her students to behave like college students and is rather impatient with students who lack in tack, or behave as if they are still in high school. I don't blame her in the least. If you're not willing to put in the effort, don't wast her time
This teacher is TERRIBLE! She spends the entire class talking about our reading assignments and when it came to the midterm, she tested us on stuff we never covered! I had to GOOGLE all of it before the test and I still got a D on it. STAY AWAY FROM THIS TEACHER!!!!!!!
Dr. Grey has a great enthusiasm for writing, and her assignments were really challenging. Her class definitely made me a much better writer.
I do not recommend this teacher to someone who would like to actually learn writing. The major grades were essays but the entirety of the classes were spent talking about reading assignments. If it was a reading class it would have been great. But for writing, there was nothing taught to help with writing at all. AVOID IF YOU WANT TO LEARN ANYTHING
Class was challenging, and required a bit of reading. The subjects of the essays were not very clear when assigned, but she will try to clarify when asked. As long as essays/ assignments show an understanding of the topic and some level of "deep" thought she'll assign a reasonable grade. Overall a good class.
She assigns a lot of reading, doesn't take the time to help you, she expects you to already know what your assignment is, isn't good at explaining what exactly she wants. Honestly, if your not up for a challenge don't take her class, she talks way to much about nonsense, gives you copies of papers you won't use in class that confuses you a lot.
I found Dr. Grey to be an excellent teacher. She is passionate about the topic and clearly wants to see her students succeed. If you are looking for an easy grade DO NOT take this class. If you want to learn how to write a college paper that will serve you the rest of your academic career then I would strongly recommend her.
Dr. Grey is an amazing instructor! I loved the readings and class discussions. I learned a lot in her class. She is there for you, if you reach out. It isn't an easy class though. You must be dedicated in order to learn. Her grading is dependent on how much you're retaining. If you want to learn a lot, take her course. She is very intelligent.
Dr. Grey's class was Confusing and difficult. 90% of class time we talked about essay's we read. She would ask us vague questions about the essay and nobody would speak up. Because if you did answer her question.... she would tear your answer apart. If you haven another option do no take this class. If you have no other options you could do worse.
I have attended PCC for 5 years. I retook this class for an A . What grade did I receive after showing my essays to her during office hours? B. After making this class my life and pushing other classes aside, I came out with another B in an intro college writing course. I have proficient English skills and can write the language. BEWARE.
Not very clear on her instructions, she lectures a lot.
She treats this class as a lecture class. She makes ridiculous refrences that no one understands. Very condesending. We spend more time reading than writing. The questions she asks are super vauge and difficult to understand. Your opinion does not matter in her class. She even insulted one of the students for not understanding her syllabus.
Condescending. With the longest boring lectures ever. If you ask for help she will reference her lectures and then question you as to why you do not remember something she mentioned three weeks ago. If you are that unlucky individual to have already signed up before looking on here... write exactly what she wants to hear if you want an A.
If you are a dedicated student, you will enjoy Dr. Grey's class. She is a brilliant teacher and helped me improve as a writer. Many of these reviews misrepresent Dr. Grey. I never found her to be condescending. She holds her students to college level standards. If you aren't serious about learning, take a different instructor.
Instructor struggled on being clear of assignments. Instructor did not care much for helping students. Constant criticism and discredit any lots of opinions from participation. Struggles to engage with students and be understanding.
Dr. Grey is a serious instructor for serious students.
If you have this teacher I recommend switching out of her. The worst writing class you can take, and you will not learn anything but talk about irish history and literature. Be prepared to discuss all class period about some handout she gave you two classes ago. bring a folder to the class too, lots of handouts.
Dr Grey knows her stuff and if you're up for truly learning something then take her class. She is extremely detailed in her analysis of your writing, I find this helpful. If you do all the reading this class will be easy.
Dr. Grey seems overqualified for her line of work. She tends to make condescending remarks and is not very willing to help her students learn. She lectures in a very uninspiring way, and would likely make a better editor than instructor.
If you're oppressed with Ireland then this is for you. She is such a hard grader and if she doesn't agree with your idea then she grades you down. If you work like I do and unfortunately have to miss a class or two then you're going to have a rough time with her.
I am extremely happy to have had this professor, I have learned so much from this class and have been inspired by everything she teaches. I have learned how to effectively correct my own essays and analyze others work. This class has made me enjoy writing and reading, which I never had before. Her tough grading taught me and inspired me the most.
Really long boring classes, once berated a kid for not buying 3 dollar book.
Not a good teacher, class was very boring. I started the year with no paper in my binder, and ended with literally 3 inches of useless paper. Do not take this class
This class was a joke. The teacher doesn't make the students feel welcome. The entire class consists of discussions of the essays and short stories provided by Dr. Grey. Be prepared to accumulate a 3 inch stack of papers that are handed out by her. This is by far the worst class I have taken. If you enjoy Irish literature, this class is for you
I have learned a lot from her. However she is rather rigorous for a freshman writing class, and I feel like had she been more accessible, I could have learned as much without feeling so drained and wrung out after every class discussion and every assignment.
Although it was somewhat of a hard class if you talk to her she will help you. I was struggling with my papers and I talked to her and she allowed me to revise them. I had a C at the end of the term but after revising them I ended up with a high B. Tips would be to go to class participate and ask her for help if needed.
I don't really get Dr. Grey. On one hand she is very intelligent and knowledgeable, which normal makes a good prof. But you will end up finding that she seems to think her job is to get you to do poorly, like a teacher vs the student, rather than a teacher plus the student. She can be very condescending, and her W121 class is a Irish studies class
Dr. Grey is a smart professor but she expects a lot from her students. She doen't consider that the students are taking other courses as well and she just gives a lot of homework. Even though I respect her knowledge and personality but I don't recommend this course. She is over-qualified for her job. The lectures are also heavy and so boring!
Dr. Grey is an interesting professor, to say the least. She is a great writing instructor and gives amazing advice that has impacted the way I write and look at writing overall. That being said her class is basically an Irish history class and the piles of papers you get are mostly if not completely useless. But her expectations are reasonable.
First year and I took this class. A good professor. We had a couple of essays and we would turn in the first draft she would look over them and then edit give it back. We would edit it and then submit the final draft which really did help a lot. I talked to her because I was worried about my grade and she worked with me to get it up.
Valerie gives long and hard assignments that are extremely difficult to maintain motivation with. A lot of assignments come without instructions, leaving you to just figure it out. Also didn't reveal she was requiring zoom meetings until the day before class, forcing me to remain in her class as all the other ones were filled.
Super harsh grader, and unclear about assignments. I did an essay draft and she gave me tips to improve with much positivity. Upon further finalization she harshly dropped my grade based on things that she did not mention in the first draft. Totally misleading and ruined my grade
Took this in summer 2020. This instructor decided to have us listen to music as arguments. Okay. Not a fan of the music, but that's not the complaint. She asked us to give our opinions/interpretations of their meanings. I gave mine and she basically said that she didn't think what it's about. I don't think she explained why. You asked my opinion.
Avoid at all costs. Her class and personality are both miserable.
AVOID AT ALL COST NO MATTER WHAT! Every bad review is right. Her personality is the worst so was this class.
Dr. Grey is definitely over-qualified for this college freshman course. While she is brilliant, she also expects you to be as well. I found it very hard to follow the assignments. The lectures are boring, and riddled with un-provoked rants. She is condescending and is often critiquing your opinion rather than appreciating an original thought.
Valerie is caring and passionate about writing. She is definitely a tough grader, but she is also willing to spend significant time providing one-on-one guidance. It's pretty easy to get a B without too much effort and come out of the class with a lot of experience. If you're shooting for a 4.0, though, I'd probably avoid this class.
There are some teachers at PCC who pride themselves on how strict their grading criteria are. Valerie, though relatively caring as a teacher, is definitely on that list. It's easy to get a B but getting anything above that is going to take a pretty unfair amount of effort for an introductory-level course. Upper-level chemistry has proved easier.
Dr. Grey's WR122 class is challenging, but with the right approach, it can be manageable. Utilizing resources like Unstuck AI for study prep helped me stay on top of the workload.
