Talked too fast, extremely feminist in all her views. Goes through way too much material, and uses the text book A LOT
She definately knows her stuff and is always willing to help u if you dont understand something. Her tests were easy,if u understand the material rather than memorize it.Only problem-she speaks really fast but she repeats herself so u dont miss anything.
Extremely feminist. She turned an easy class into a very challenging one. Goes out of her way to make sure you get a sh*tty grade.
Get out of her class! She like's to teach at 8 am ALWAYS, and talks at the speed of light when you're just trying to wake up. Tests are retarded and totally dependent on reading material.
I think she does a great job of clarifying the topics in class lectures. She is straight to the point and always repeats important information you will need to know for the test. I like her style especially at that early in the morning. If I had a boring teacher at 8 am I would probably fall asleep.
One thing describes her: intense! Not the prof to go for if you want an 'easy A' but she makes sure that you understand the material and that you can apply it. She cares a lot for her students and takes time to make sure that you understand what is going on.
As the person below me described her, she is intense. But if you pay attention in class and do the readings (there isn't a lot) - you will have a very good understanding of classical sociological theory. I am very glad I took her class!
This class completely shocked me due to the unique tests and intense material, but after going to speak to Dr. Haines several times this class became my favourite. I HIGHLY recommend taking this class if you want to learn a lot and have a prof who actually cares about her students.
i hate anything that has to do with theory, but Dr. Haines made it interesting. She is an amazing proff, super helpful, and really cares about her students! I would love to have another class with her!!!
Amazing Professor. Let's face it theory is boring but I actually found this class interesting. The way she delivers content is extremely well organized. Her tests can be difficult but as long as you understand the concepts you'll do fine. Her class is not about memorization it's about application. Dr Haines is great I'd take another course with her
Val is a great prof. She reiterates all of the important points, makes sure you understand what it is she wants you to learn, and is always willing to help if you go to her office. Her teaching format is super well-organized. I totally recommend her!
I find that Valerie Haines has a vast knowledge on what she teaches, yet struggles to accurately explain and describe basic concepts. She speaks incredibly quickly and regularly attempts to engage the class by asking questions, which are typically responded to in silence (due to the ambiguous phrasing she uses). Easy class, but not enjoyable.
She is great professor! I never thought a theory class would be so interesting! Upon taking 201 I really disliked learning about the theorists but she has made it extremely enjoyable! She is engaged throughout the class, in the sense that she doesn't just monotonely talk. She takes the time to emphasize on key concepts.
Extremely dull class and tries to make it interesting, but fails at doing so. Talks very fast and doesn't always repeat herself. Fails to explain basic concepts but explains more complex concepts well (if you can grasp the basics on your own). Try to avoid her if you can, but if you can't, drink lots of coffee because she always teaches at 8am.
Exams are brutal and cover stuff that aren't in your notes or in the book or on the PP slides. She also talks extremely fast and claims to repeat herself but almost never does. This class is one of the most boring I've ever taken. On the bright side she is quite nice and has a vast knowledge on the subject. Doesn't always communicate it though.
This was probably my favourite class all semester. The topics are boring but the way Dr. Haines teaches them makes them easy to learn. The tests were difficult and the answers she looks for are extremely specific but I learned so much from her. She was always willing to help me outside of class as well.
I loathe this professor. In every aspect one may judge an individual's ability to teach, Ms. Haines fails. From lectures, to readings to exams. A year end "review sessions" was held, and was absolutely laughable. I sincerely hope you avoid this professor, but if that is an impossibility, make sure to bring coffee - her classes are always 8am.
Dr Haines writes disgustingly hard tests, but she is so helpful and really wants students to succeed.
Dr. Haines is a great professor, despite the fact that her tests are extremely difficult and require an in depth understanding of all concepts and the ability to compare theorists. She is always wishing for her students to succeed. One downside is the fact that she does not answer questions via email, so you must got to her office hours.
Worst. Changed majors because she sucked the joy out of sociology.
omg, like just so bad
omg so bad, tests are near impossible. Lectures are the only way of understanding the course because the text is so unrelated and in a completely different order than the course itself. Lectures are boring and long and every single tutorial was a waste of time.
She's honestly the worst professor I've ever had in my 5 years at the University. She sucked the joy out of learning simple theory concepts and it's impossible to do good in this class.
Awesome professor! She is extremely clear about the subject mater she expects you to know and she repeats anything important. Tutorials are strictly for extra help (not graded) which was nice and if you apply yourself, her exams are extremely fair. Great energy for an 8am class.
Probably the worst class I've ever taken. She makes learning unappealing and the exams are impossible!!!!!
Haines is a good prof if you're interested enough to go to an 8 am class for Sociology. The lecture slides are online but if you really want to do well in the class you have to go to the lectures and do (almost) all the readings. If you're interested enough and have ample amounts of time for self study then I would recommend it. If not think twice.
Attending lectures is pretty important because she says things that aren't in the notes but they were pretty boring in my opinion. There are a lot of assigned readings, so be prepared for a lot of reading.
I loved Dr. Haines! She talks SUPER fast, but she repeats things that are important. I found that her talking fast is helpful in an 8:00 class because it made me pay attention. The tests are hard, I studied a lot for them and I still didn't do as well as I had hoped. Her big focus is on linking the readings to the lectures, so go to class!!!
Loved this Prof! She talks super fast but repeats things that are important. The exams are hard, I studied a lot and still didn't do as well as I had hoped. Lectures are really interesting and you can tell she's passionate about the subject. Go to all the lectures! Over all I loved the class.
Prof Haines is my favourite. I took a different class with her, and she makes me wish I was a soci major so I could take more. She explains things clearly, she it passionate about her subject, and she is actually a researcher so she knows a lot about it. GO TO LECTURES!!! Do all the readings. The tests are tough but fair. Absolutely love her.
She speaks fast so she tends to repeat things multiple times - as someone who gets distracted pretty easily I found myself struggling to focus through her repetitiousness. Testing was pretty fair if you did the reading or paid attention to the lectures. Her passion is pretty apparent and she clearly enjoys teaching the subject; overall a good prof
Talks really fast so its hard to concentrate. Test are garbage - would ask a question and when doing review after would say "when I said this I actually meant this" felt like she was constantly trying to trick me. Language is too intense for a 301 course - its like shes trying to prove how smart she is - just spews her own research at you
This class is easy and kind of pointless because of the way she constructed it. It seems pretty lazy on her part that grades are based on only 3 tests - all multiple choice. She hammers info into us and then "tests" us on it. if you want to get more out of sociology than an easy A - another prof might be better.
This prof is the worst prof at UOFC. Absolutely doesn't care about her students. Avoid taking a class with her!
Talks at 100 mph in a monotone voice, classes are nothing but reading definitions off of a powerpoint slide. Don't take sociology, just don't.
Good prof that knows what she's talking about. She speaks quickly but it's reasonable once you get used to it. Read your textbook and you will do great in the test. Your grade is based off 3 marks so that kind of sucks, but whatever.
Class is at 8:00AM so the last thing you want is a prof who is hard to pay attention to. Hard to listen to since she talks VERY fast, it got to a point where I would just sit and listen because I couldn't follow along well enough to take notes. If you read the textbook and skip lectures you'll be fine.
For a theory class I actually really enjoyed it. She went through readings in class which really helped. Honestly if you read the 1 essay per week and attend lectures it was an easy A. She goes through each mid term so if you made a mistake you can catch it before the final. I expected theory to bring down my GPA but it ended up boosting it
She was a great prof, she does talk fast but it is still possible to copy down notes off of her ppts and listen and take notes at the same time. I take a lot of notes in lectures and I hardly ever found her talking too fast. She does care about her students, but you do have to study hard and how to connect the concepts is what she focuses on.
She was a good prof, if you showed initiative then you should be fine. She does talk fast, but that's only because she's extremely smart and if she slows down she'll forget what she's talking about. However, she does repeat important things as a way to combat it! She knows she talks fast - dont think she doesnt!
Tests are ridiculously hard, and V Haines doesn't seem to care much about the students. Take this course only if you absolutely need to.
Everything you need to know for tests is given to you on a silver platter in every lecture. She repeats the important things and tells you what you do and do not need to know. My favourite prof so far.
Tests are very ambiguous, so it's hard to do well regardless of how hard you study. I know Prof Haines cares about her students and her subject, BUT it would be nice if she didn't punish people for not attending class. I work at a restaurant until 4 am sometimes and simply cannot make 8 am lectures. Skip class and your mark will suffer.
Although Haines is passionate about soci her tests were near impossible. you need to know absolutely everything in order to do well on them. every question has 5 options and they are very confusing and really make you second guess yourself. i have never studied so hard for something and been so demoralized.
This class is very heavy she makes the course unbearable. My advice do not take her as you are guaranteed an F.
Avoid taking her as a prof at all costs. She isn't very approachable, if u do approach her, she is very snappy and rude. Her tests are extremely hard and lectures are very dense. Her tests are 20 questions and worth a lot so be ready to study. She talks very fast and is hard to keep up with her. Overall she is the WORST prof i have ever met.
Her lectures are so boring, and extremely dry. She makes learning Sociology painful, thats how bad she is at teaching. She only engages with the students at the front of her class. Don't ever take a class with her, your life will be much better off.
Valerie Haines was really passionate about the material. Going to lectures is very important, watch out for repetition as she always repeats the important stuff multiple times. Her tests were tough so make sure you study for them.
Its hard to stay focused in her class. She says the word "recognize" a lot to the point that its annoying. Exams are hard. Goodluck.
Dr. Haines is a good prof. Although she has very hard tests. You need to read both the textbook and notes to study. Her lectures are necessary as well, as she doesn't post all the needed information online. She definitely knows her stuff about sociology.
lectures are dry, dense and cumulative (which she will remind you of 1000 times). Unrealistic amount of additional readings which were all dense journal articles. I read every chapter assigned, every journal article and attended all lectures and still scraped by with a B-. content and prof are boring and hard to grasp - AVOID
Did not learn anything in this class. Because she makes lectures are dull. Nothing on her exams are what she says.
Her tests are way too hard especially for a course like this. I really feel like she doesn't want her students to succeed. Regardless of if you attend every class and take good notes and do all her readings, its almost impossible to be ready for her tests. I really wish i never took this class, it will drop your GPA for sure.
Taking a course with her was probably the worst decision i have ever made. I have never tried so hard to succeed in a course and still get a C. I really wish i had withdrew, don't make the same mistake guys.
She helped write the textbook, she is super nitpicky and super specific. Go to the lectures if you want to do well, all of the content is not covered in the textbooks and the slides are vague without the extra explanation
She always stressed that all her exams were cumulative, when really they weren't at all. On the second midterm, i focused so much on remembering the previous material, when nothing on the exam was from the previous material. She is SOOO MISLEADING. Plus her classes are always at 8am, which is such a pain. Don't take her for 201. Goodluck
Dr. Haines is very passionate about her research that she has done, and talks about it often, but in truth nobody cares. This women talks so fast, i seriously question if she even breathes. But i must say she has a sick haircut. Yeah thats about it.
This class is an intro course into the sociology faculty and I would definitely recommend taking it with Prof. Haines! She keeps it real in lectures, is a great teacher, and does a great job at repeating the main points in lectures, so you learn the important parts. Test-wise, you have to know the similarities and differences of all the material.
She tells you what is needed for the exams in lecture and clearly emphasises points that will be tested on. She stresses the importance of reading her textbook but questions from it on exams can be figured out from just her notes. This course was basically an explanation of why we see the different kinds of stratification that we do in society.
Even with showing up to 95% of the classes, the material on the exams was not what she taught. A number of readings pertaining to the textbook was a fair amount, however, Haines added an overwhelming amount of additional readings that were not communicated ahead of time, and to access some of the articles you had to pay online.
This course requires a lot of reading, of lecture noes and the required reading. If you keep up with what is required you won't struggle. Also Dr Haines repeats the main concepts and those are likely what she will ask in the tests: so go to class and Pay Attention! She is very engaging and if you ask her questions she tries her best to answer them.
Go to the lectures. Dr Haines is brilliant but talks fast. All of her lecture information is very important and she always repeats the most important points so, if you care, try to listen carefully. You will do pretty well on exams if you go to the lectures and take notes but will do very well if you also do the textbook readings.
Her lectures are critical- so good luck if you skip. I didn't buy the textbook and got an A. Her exams have 5 answers for multiple choice so there's options for two of the above to be right. She's passionate about teaching sociology so it makes it easier to listen and learn but the exams are not fun.
Dr. Haines is an amazing prof. As long as you attend lectures and study the material presented you will be amazing in her classes! She is definitely not out to make students fail. Great introductory class.
Haines is enthusiastic about her teaching and highly knowledgeable about social theory, however, her expectations for a 300 level course are extremely high. The amount of information she expects students to know for exams is absurd. Lectures are dry but you really need to attend lectures to do well.
Liked Haines at first, organized and good teaching style. Thought I got an A on first exam and got a C- back. Same thing happened with every exam and am ending the semester with a D- (fml) Enjoyed the course material, but not the extremely difficult marking or the fact that I have to retake this course next term to get into SOCI333. Terrible prof.
Her exams are extremely hard and expect students to write her test specially in her words like as if the students were robots. Her marking scale for the tests are absurd and you would fail the if you don't attend the lectures. She only does tests for this course, so there is nothing else that can boost up your grade except for the exams
Tests are cumulative, long, & hard. There are some questions specific to the textbook. She will talk about research examples that always appear on her tests, so go to class. Slides are full of information but in class she really emphasizes what is important. Crash course (YouTube channel) is useful in helping to understand some of the broad topics
Doctor Haines is actually a great prof although I wished she had posted practice exams (although she does sample questions in lectures). She actually emphasizes what you need to know on the exam but be careful as it grading is all exam based for her. It is also better to read notes before class (she posts it) as she talks quite fast but clear.
Her teaching style takes some time to get used to as she talks really fast, but once you get the hang of it she's actually very interesting to listen to. Her lectures matter A LOT, so PAY ATTENTION. She assigns a lot of interesting readings, but if you don't have time to read, just study the lecture slides + your notes and you'll be more than fine.
Dr. Haines' lectures are very dense. To do well on her tests you have to memorize what she said word for word (her tests are written) and apply the concepts you learned. You need to fully understand each concept as she will provide you with a different context on the exams. Definitely not an easy class but you will learn a lot.
Awful. I did poorly on the first midterm so decided to seek help in her office, she was not helpful and I ended up doing just as poorly on the final. Even if you write the correct answer in your own words, you may not even get any points... would not recommend!!!!
If you snake off during her lecture, sorry you will lost many notice. most of time her do not tell you where should you read of the textbook. Also her slide is useless on the test which her will not give you any hit or review. And then during the test you will strat to think did I really study in this class.
The critical factor here is that Dr. Haines will make it impossible for you to pass this class if you don't take time outside of class to review the things she mentions once or twice. You will find her repeating something 7-8 times across many lectures, and there may only be 1-2 questions on exams about that.
Dr. Haines has a stern lecture presence but delivers material in a very clear and concise manner. Ideas are well connected to each other and several explanations of each topic are provided. Dr. Haines prepares sample questions before each exam and if you attend lectures and do the required readings you should have no problem excelling in this class
Had her for an 8am class. Goes through the content very quickly and has a level of enthusiasm and energy that will keep you awake. Puts some other information on powerpoints that is not put on D2L. Otherwise, you can afford to miss classes but it is better to show up as she gives many examples and deeper explaining in class.
Dr. Haines lectures were straight-forward, and she explained concepts quite well. Her lectures are very fast paced, so you have to be on your toes. Her tests are multiple choice and not too difficult (just be sure to thoroughly read the question and all possible answers). Overall, if you attend lecture, you should do well in her class.
Dr. Haines is very to the point and explains topics in a way that is clear and concise. You need to know all the topics covered and be able to connect them to one another. Her tests are brutal and have some tricky questions however if you know the content well you'll be fine.
The worst prof I've ever had. There are three exams and she makes them extremely hard. I did all the readings and took detailed notes in her lectures and only got a C. This class is supposed to be a GPA booster but she makes it hard to pass. The material isn't hard, but she makes the exams impossible to pass.
Coming to class is mandatory because she discusses information that will be on the test, that is not found in the notes or textbook. Reading the textbook is also encouraged, however I got an A from reading the notes I made from her lectures. The tests are pretty challenging, but if you know the content you will do good. Great Prof
Smart, witty and organized. If you study the notes and read the textbook the exams will not be difficult. If you put in the time you will get the result, it's really that simple.
I studied super hard for her exams and thought I would get an A but since you need to use her EXACT wording for her short answer tests I ended up getting Cs. Steer clear of her because even if you study you will get a bad mark
Please, for the love of god, avoid! There are only 2 exams and 1 final. I made my own notes, read the slides, reviewed the concepts, and still got 2 D's on my midterms and a C on my final. I thought I understood the content, but the exams were overly complicated and tricky.
Haines talks a mile a minute but repeats what she is saying 2-3 times in different ways which makes it easy to understand the concepts and take down notes. Her tests are hard, but if you put in the work you will be fine. I got a D on the first midterm and an A+ on the second one by studying more of what she actually says in class about the slides.
Avoid taking her class early in the day. Stern and bossy personality, talks way too fast and unwilling to change, even if it means helping students better learn. Words test questions in a very difficult manner, focus is on making connections on your own. textbook not completely mandatory if you attend all lectures, few ?'s on tests from textbook.
Honestly this class is super easy if you go to lecture and take good notes on what she says. I got an A+ on the first midterm by reading the textbook and studying lecture notes and an A on the second just through lecture notes. Shes very unwilling to help you outside of lectures though, and comes off rude and annoyed. But the class itself is easy.
Took this class as a prereq for upper SOCI courses and getting Haines was probably the best thing that could have happened. Lecture notes are more than adequate for studying, attendance is not mandatory, testable material is clearly established, text book is not needed, and exams were fair and tested understanding of concepts, not pure memorization
Soci 331 was by far the hardest class I have taken but Haines made it acheivable! Her lectures were incredibly detailed and you needed to show up because a lot of what was on her test she said only in lecture, so take detailed notes are a must. She really emphasized what you needed to know and didn't and her tests were difficult but fair
Adore her as a professor. Having Haines as the prof was the only reason I could get up for 8 am lectures. She talks quite fast but she repeats important information so you can write it all down. She's helpful, responds quick to emails, and is clear on what is required for exams. Only reason my grade is B- is due to myself, 10/10 WILL take again!
There's only two midterms and the final. No assignments. So if tests aren't your strong area then good luck. You also need to read the textbook.
Hard exam questions, watch out.
Haines focuses us to rely more on the textbook than on the lecture. Her notes are helpful but Id suggest to go over the text book since day 1 as her exams ask more questions from the textbook than from her lecture slides
I normally get As but after working my butt off I ended up with a C. Hardest prof Ive had in 4 years
Tests are kind of difficult but not to bad if you know the content. I dont think attendance was mandatory but definitely know the material. Not a big fan of her as a teacher, she kinda repeats herself a lot and goes pretty quickly. Also sociology is a science.
Her tests are styled as A. Yes B. No C. Maybe D. A and c F. All of the above. So you must know each concept, and be able to connect things well. I personally wouldnt take her class again for that reason. Dont recommend if you dont test well. Also talks fast in lectures, or repeats herself often.
Lots of people seem to dislike Haines because they think this is an easy A class. Welcome to university. She covers a lot of material and her tests are difficult. Thats no reason to hate on a professor. Youre getting your moneys worth and if you actually pay attention, youll learn a lot. Highly recommended if you want to learn. Not an easy A.
People are not a fan of her because she talks extremely fast and gives somewhat difficult exams. I did not like her at the beginning of the year but she eventually grew on me. She presents the material very clearly in a fairly unbiased way and does not force her own political opinions onto the students like many other professors do.
I really like Dr. Haines. I personally did not think she spoke too fast and she would repeat herself if it was information for a test. She tells you in the beginning how to link lecture notes to the textbook. You need to understand concepts not memorize them. I understood everything and got a good mark. Work hard an u will be ok. Not an ez A.
Never once have i received a mark lower then a B expect for this class. Dr. Haines goes through her slides way too fast its impossible to even grasp the concept. She tries to trick you on her midterms and she does not giver clear feedback. She does not want to help students and does not care if you are struggling.
I personally loved Dr. Haines in SOCI201. She was an awesome lecturer. You need to go to class because she discusses stuff in class not on the notes that will be tested. Readings are also tested. Some complained because they thought it would be an easy A - this class is NOT AN EASY A but a VERY interesting class! Know your content well for tests!
It is important to come to her class and listen to what she has to say. She talks very fast. It is recommended to use textbook as well. Her grading system is two tests and a final with no assignments or quizzes. BEWARE! Understand the material thoroughly, be a use questions contain answers such as "A and B"are correct. or "All of the above."
Haines does NOT answer emails. If you have a question, don't bother emailing. Her tests are absolutely ridiculous, they are worded as "a, b, c, a and b, all of the above". This class is doable with text book reading but not an easy A. You have to know the material inside and out to do well on test. The way she words questions is confusing.
She is the worst proff ever. If you get a chance to choose some one else, DO IT!!!! She is the worsttttt. NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS UNTIL YOU HAVE TOOOOO
Her tests are horrible, unless you memorize how she words everything you will get a C regardless of how hard you studied. She is very tough and attending lectures is a must but even then her tests will kill you.
Dr Haines's class is easily the most straightforward class I've had. As long as you attend class and do her readings, you'll do fine in her tests. Unlike other profs, there isn't any essays or participation grades in her class. Instead, if you take time to understand the concepts (which she likes reiterate 100 times ), its an easy A.
SOCI301 is a step up from SOCI201, in a sense, she teaches you to be independent in reading scientific articles. Readings are still extremely important but the lack of homework balances it out. You can only fail if you don't attend her class, don't listen to what she says, and don't understand the concept fully. Do the work and its an easy A.
After taking this class in my 3rd year, I can understand why people drop out after 1 semester at university. If I had a prof like this when I first started I would not be here. All multiple choice questions that are worded with the intent to mess you up and second guess yourself on every single question. I'll never take another class of hers!
Her lectures were too long, and worded badly. She gives out lots of readings and her tests are extremely confusing no matter how well you know the material. It is way too test heavy and not a fun class.
Course consists of 3 exams and a final. Exams are not open book and they are mixed written response and multiple choice. If you don't come to her lectures you'll miss out on a lot of information when doing the exams. She speaks quickly and lectures are not recorded. I do not recommend this professor, please choose someone else .
Dr. Haines is probably a great prof in person but she failed to accommodate this year's new way of online learning. She did not provide a textbook to help study the material, lectures were never recorded and went very fast, and she did not show her face during lectures to create a connection with her students.
All of her info comes from what she says during her lectures rather than whats on the slides. Its all tests so you gotta study hard and focus on her talking and take many notes. Didnt accommodate well to online.
Haines didnt bother to have meetings with her students and helping them when they were struggling. Her lectures terrible good she never tested us on her content. She tests to see if you are paying attention and are listening. tests are whack she asks five questions wrapped in one question so you get confused and dont know what you are answering
She was not accommodating on any level when it came to online learning. She and her TA were both not very efficient at answering questions. Lectures were not good at all, too many readings. Tests were extremely unfair and not on material we learned. wording on both lectures and tests were awful and not helpful. Worst prof I have ever had
Haines tests are super-specific for no reason. She does. the whole none of the above/ all of the above/ a and b/ c and d. She also will not respond or even try to reach out to students at all. One of the hardest classes that I have taken.
The content was sometimes more complex than it needed to be. 4 non-cumulative tests with tricky questions of SA + MC and they are not open book. She only gives a 'skeleton' of the notes so you'd better go to class and get ready to write. She speaks a little fast but repeats herself and will answer questions or review things if you need to.
She wants you to fail. Do not take this course unless you want a D
Uh. The copy of the slides posted on d2l literally has individual slides missing that she goes over in lecture XD. Kind of snake but not sure what else soci professors are supposed to do to prevent things from being too easy during covid. She has a high degree of error, typos on exams, exam questions being removed after the fact. That sort of thing
IF THERE IS ONE PROFESSOR I CAN SAVE A STUDENT FROM IT IS HAINES. DO NOT TAKE A COURSE WITH HER UNLESS YOU WANT A BAD GRADE!! just don't do it I BEG YOU
The most intimidating professor I've ever had. She is the worst prof ever and her tests are so hard!!! It's almost as if she wants to play mind games with her tests. Her tests are literally just stuff she says in class which is so annoying. She teaches just to teach she doesn't really care about her students
One of the worst professors I have ever had. She doesn't even test on textbook or lecture knowledge, just on what she says in class. Her tests are awful, theres answers such as a&b or all of the above. In class you'll need to write down every word she says, she doesn't record lectures so if you missed it, sucks you're failing the next test.
This class was insanely hard. The tests were unreasonable considering it was a asynchronous class that we took online. I studied probably 8 hours a day for two weeks to prepare for her final and I barely got a passing grade. If you can avoid this prof.
She's not as bad as people are saying. As long as you listen to her lectures and know how everything is interconnected it's doable. Her tests are a little tricky because she does the "all the above". The time limit on test is short and tricky, would like more time for sure. Her lectures could get a little boring too. Overall she's pretty ok.
Due to the other reviews I was nervous to take this class with Dr. Haines, but I was pleasantly surprised. I found this class to be very straightforward, and concepts that weren't very clear in lecture were better explained in the textbook. The tests were closed-book but fairly easy.
We never had live lectures but the recorded lectures were information heavy but very clear and easy to understand! Loved her classes.
Does not care about the students. Not a considerable professor. Exams are very confusing. Her exams are made to fail students!!! WORST PROF ever!
Lecture notes are very general compared to tests which are very specific. Does not care about her students and barely responds to emails. Tests are confusing offering options like a&b, a&c, all of the above, non of the above. Has unrealistic expectations and is very unorganized. She's probably the worst prof at uofc. Don't take if you dont want a D
I am a straight 4.0 student and this is my worst class. her powerpoints are useless unless u write every single word she says. a 30mins lecture took 3 hours to complete. Do not take this class. People with good reviews if u think u should listen to them don't. If u want to actually learn soci take a diff prof. I am depressed, sad, tired, and done.
The textbook seemed to be more useful than anything else for passing this course. She has a difficult time not letting her political views influence her lectures as I feel like she was trying to make little marxists out of us. Lectures in my opinion (especially in the political and social realm) should be unbiased.
She doesn't allow students allow to record the lectures so if you miss a class, you are screwed and she talks super fast. Her test are filled with poor grammar and trick questions to confuse you. She is a very stubborn person and doesn't accommodate to students. Overall, I think she is disrespectful and cocky toward.
This professor is horrible at examining students. Her exams have so many mistakes and her exam questions are basically paragraphs that by the time you finish reading your like what did I just read. She doesnt really care about her students because she never answers emails and is super disrespectful when someone asks a question.
I do not usually comment on here since no prof has ever come close to ruining my life the way she has. I truly believe this prof does not want you to succeed in her class and designs her tests as such. For someone teaching a class on health, she truly made sure to ruin the mental health of all her students.
I dont even know what to say. I heard horrible things about her before and I should have listened lol this was easily the hardest class Ive taken in my degree for no reason at all, I took it as an option. You have to write down everything she says or youre screwed. Tests are long, wordy and designed to trick you. Definitely avoid at all costs!
SOCI 201 - The class was well organized, informative, and has made me more interested in sociology. Professor Haines speaks clearly and uses examples from her own research to explain some concepts (but not in a egotistical way), which was helpful. Her tests are wordy and long with not enough time, but if you study you should do well.
I took 6 courses this semester and this was the class that I spent my spare time thinking about. You need to understand the content to do well on the exams. It is made very clear in lecture and slides what information is needed, no surprises. Very generous with her time in office hours and is an absolute wealth of knowledge. Learnt a ton!
I was studying for the final and I noticed a tear running down my cheek. I was upset that I was at the end of my learning with her. The amount I took away from this course was almost embarrassing. I changed my next semester to add another class with Haines. She delivers the materials in a clear, engaged, and powerful manner.
MY GOD. JUST DON'T TAKE HER CLASS PLEASE. She is knowledgeable but her lectures are super long and boring as she repeats the same sentence over and over again. The course got 4 MC quizzes only. But all of them are extremely hard and confusing. The quizzes got 50 MCs in 76 minutes (50 minutes in person). I just don't know how.
Haines is very intelligent and her class all together should be straight forward. BE AWARE OF HER TESTS. She is very good at tricking you in tests, and she wont offer extra credit nor acknowledge that you do not understand what could have went wrong.
Worst class ive ever taken.
Haines was very intelligent and the class should have been more straight forward, the content of learning was heavy but very informative. When it came to the tests little to no questions were related to the content we have studied for, almost my whole class was receiving less than average grades. SHE TRICKS YOU ON TESTS. I don't say that lightly
If you already don't get the content right off the bat, it's a little tricky to progress further in the class. You only have four exams to determine your grade, which is scary if you go into it already not doing well. SHE TRICKS YOU ON TESTS which I think isn't fair because I don't see how that benefits my learning. Too many wordy readings too.
She is terrible. She offers no lecture notes or slides, everything from lectures you need to write. Problem is she speaks 1000 words a second, and makes her sentences confusing. Worst online prof ever. You will get a decent grade tho.
This course is designed for failure. She talks so fast in lectures that you will be pausing it every 5 seconds if you want to take notes, turning a 10m "micro lecture" into 40m. The exams are not at an introductory level. There is not enough time given for how complex her questions are. If I had the option to drop I would have as I'm exhausted.
I didn't enjoy my online classes with Haines at all. She makes her classes asynchronous and is very vague on slides but speaks at a million miles per minute. You have to start and stop many times. The one thing that I did enjoy is that her lecture videos aren't an hour each, she divides them into micro lectures so they are shorter.
Don't take this class.
Readings and lectures are extremely lengthy, and she talks so fast you pause all the time . You won't understand her test questions because she like to tricks you. Make sure you are studying well before her tests as she takes down all material during the testing period.
Honestly, I've never gotten grades lower in my academic career. I read the textbook/lectures and made detailed notes. insane work-load for a soci class and the exams... do not get me started. She intentionally tricks to the point where I feel like she wants us to fail. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS !!!
By far the worst proof Ive had. Unless your trying to write down every single word from her mouth and then have some chance in doing well, dont take it lol. This class isnt even met to learn, its literally just do the test and leave. I highly recommend psychology over this because you wont learn anything. I recommend Haines changes her exams.
Her tests are so difficult for an entry-level course. I feel like this course is the embodiment of a job posting for an "entry-level" position that requires 10+ years of experience. If the tests cannot be re-assessed/changed by the Sociology Department, at least consider turning on the captions for the recordings *sigh*
Do not take this class. The tests are very confusing and you had to know everything detail of the content to do to remotely good on them. The micro lectures take forever to get through because she talks so fasts which turns two hours of lectures into five. Hardest class ive ever taken.
tough exams, prof not accessible when needed not a GPA booster
Professor Haines has amazing class content, and ensures that there are no surprises on assessments, is very smart and is a phenomenal educator, but she doesn't offer much outside of that. If you want to be taught by a human, do not take her class because throughout the entire semester she never showed any personality. Her content carries the class.
She's very knowledgeable in what she teaches, however the way she teaches is not engaging whatsoever. It is very repetitive and drawn out, there is only 3 tests and the final so you must do well on those because there is no other way to increase your mark. The tests have many trick questions, barley passed thankfully its done
Do not take this class! Very hard to understand what she wants from you which makes it difficult to study. She doesn't record the lectures and talks super fast. The test felt like a maze super confusing as if she wants to trick you. You need to write down everything she says otherwise it's hard to understand everything. Find another prof for 331!!
Extremely hard I studied hours everyday for this class and still didn't do well. Super challenging tests do not take this class
Just AWFUL. Terrible exams. Questions are worded horribly and deliberately misleading. For the 1st midterm, I missed multiple classes and forgot to do the readings, so I got a C. For every subsequent exam, I attended every class, did every reading, took good notes, and studied, and still got C's. Trying at all is a waste of time. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Read the lengthy book, watched the boring pre-recorded lecture videos, took the tests full of vague questions. The only thing I learned is to use ratemyprofessor before choosing a course.
the course is interesting but dense and can be dry. dr. haines' slides are very minimalistic but she does a good job of repeating herself so its not difficult to get everything down. tests required a lot of information synthesis and reading beyond just memorization. very willing to go over ur exams with you and help you with studying strategies
She gives questions that arent even on the text book or in her lectures and expects us to do 50-60 under 1h 15 minutes. Its ridiculous.
I took this class Winter 2020 and I have to say avoid this prof as much as possible. Our class got transferred online halfway through the semester and all she did was post slides and had us do the readings. Her exams are challenging for an intro class. Theyre also MC type of exam but the choices are very tricky. Memorizing doesnt help either.
Worse prof! Exams were super vague and tricky! Some questions were not in the lecture or textbook. Difficult for 201 level class.
Only way to do well is to basically transcribe her lectures and cram for each test. Exams are ridiculously tricky; it shows that she basically doesn't want you to do well in class; if you go to her office hours, she wont even show you all your mistakes on a test, meaning it's not possible to learn from your mistakes. Topics were interesting tbf.
This class is very difficult, the content was enjoyable but I had a hard time trying to understand what she wanted from us. I had to drop it because I was barely passing after studying multiple hours daily. This is a mandatory class for soci majors. Recommend taking with another prof or online through Athabasca
It feels like she doesn't want you to do well. The test is filled with tricks that make you second guess yourself. She also talks very fast. She is very knowledgeable but the whole class feels like a trap and maze. I was very familiar with the content we learned but had no idea what she wanted. Set us up to fail
DO NOT MISS CLASS. Must have friends in this class or create a class discourse b/c there will be things you need clarification on or help to connect topics and theorists together properly as this class is cumulative in where things build off each other. Tests = half written and half MC, NEED TO UNDERSTAND things to get good marks on tests.
Dr. Haines is a passionate prof, I thoroughly enjoyed attending her lectures! However, the entire grade is made up of four lengthy written tests. Memorization will get you nowhere in this class. Understanding the material and being able to make connections between topics is necessary. If you are looking for an easy A, do not take this class.
Dr Haines is a very knowledgable and organized prof but her class requires an intense amount of commitment to succeed. Expect to do a lot information synthesis! The short answers questions are tricky and her class is often a maze.
Save yourself and don't take her class, so far Haines is the toughest prof I have run into. Her tests are confusing as she kind of expects you to know how to connect ideas and theories without telling you, she speaks way too much and way too quickly. Do not take her class!
Don't take this class. She said "In my 25 years of teaching, this is the first time no one got this question right on the exam". With over 50 students in the class, chances are this doesn't mean students didn't study. This means the prof failed to teach properly and expected us to "just know". The 2nd exam even had a word I'd never seen before.
I think because of Haines requirement for critical thinking rather than memorization on her tests, a lot of people don't like her. It's not what a lot of profs do, so a lot of people are not used to it, but it's a more beneficial skill in the long run. Actual content of test questions are reasonable, its just the CT demand thats hard.
Great prof, she is absolutely brilliant. Don't skip lectures, do the readings, and give yourself enough time to study for her exams. Memorization won't be enough to do well.
Passionate about the subject, and I feel like she takes the time to explain important concepts in lecture. Her exams are definitely not memorization, she expects you to understand the subject matter, but some of the questions are so confusingly worded that it feels like a logic puzzle more than an exam. Also 4 exams is overkill for this course.
Was Valerie Haines a good prof: A) Yes. B) No. C) Yes and No. D) Neither. E) Maybe. F) Perhaps a bit of both. G) A and C, not B but little bit of E. H) What was the question again? Familiarize yourself with trick questions.
She uses slightly different lecture notes than the ones she puts on d2l, which is lowkey annoying, and her tests are GARBAGE. They are all so confusing and tricky - it feels like no matter how many hours you study you're still gonna fail. Do yourself a favour and avoid her at all costs.
Makes very little effort to help students understand dense concepts with fast talking. Loads of dry readings with with only a few having relevance to the tests. Test questions are horribly designed and tricky despite dealing with deep concepts resulting in questions that 0% of the class got correct. One of the worst profs I've ever had.
Great lectures. Repeats important info, is enthusiastic, and had clear plans precisely followed. However, lectures are filling, it can be hard to keep up. Tough exams: you have to connect, evaluate, and infer. Short answer questions on all exams (+ MC and T/F). Attend every class. Tune in. Ask questions. Passionate prof and I have no regrets. :)
The tests were challenging, but if you attended lectures, she was more than willing to clarify concepts for you and directed you to how she wanted students to think critically and respond to written questions. She provided required reading materials, but her D2L slides were an outline rather than informative so attendance and note-taking is crucial
If you are looking for a course that doesn't require writing and all exams are multiple choice Haines is a good option; Although it is still important to go to lecture. Runs through a lot of material very fast. She is blunt and not approachable. Clear with her expectations.
I found she spoke very quickly, and although reiterated what she felt was important, I did not feel like it really reflected on the exams. The exams are content-heavy and often nit-picky on the little details. Overall if you have to take it then take it, if not, I would avoid it if you are not a test person.
DON'T take this class. Slides + lectures are agonizingly dry, tells you print out the slides and take notes like that, says it's easier but she doesn't even give all the slides. It's like she wants you to fail. Goes through the material very quickly and does not let you take pictures of the slides so if you can't write fast enough, you miss it.
Avoid this prof if you have a short attention span. Her lectures are extremely wordy and fast-paced, and you are not allowed phones out during the lecture. Further, there are 4 exams with paragraphs for questions with extremely specific content. Do not take this course with Dr. Haines if you are mentally burnt out and scraping by.
She's a very fast paced teacher and her slides are dry so if you miss a lecture, your essentially screwed.
Very, very dry lectures. If you pull your phone out to check the time, you are asked to put it away. The class is taught much harder than it needs to be. The exams are also worded so they mess with your mind.
STAY AWAY! Took as a business major looking for an option, Valerie is very dry, tests are worded to trick you! Had to take a WD because it would tank my GPA. (I studied for 10+ h for every exam) Take a different prof!
Do not reccomend her classes as she tricks you on tests, and her lectures arent very engaging. Her slides are more of a outline so make sure to come to class and be actively listening.
The class content was very interesting, and it was very clear that she is very knowledgable on the material. Make sure you go to lectures and read the textbook, if you do that you will do great in the class. Her tests can be difficult and her lectures are very heavy. This is not an easy GPA booster elective.
I was skeptical to take a class with her because of the bad reviews, but I decided to take 301 as it was a requirement. Biggest mistake ever. She is actually really rude and too condescending to even help you understand the material. 4 tests is overkill and she words questions on the test as confusing as she can. I would avoid her at all costs!
Dr. Haines' class is tough, but manageable if you stay engaged. Lectures can be dry, but the material is interesting. Definitely use the textbook and consider tools like Unstuck study for exam prep - it really helped me.
This teacher almost made me drop out, they purposely try to trick students with questions and BRAG ABOUT IT! I have never had a class like this and not in a good way. The exams are way too hard and she doesn't give much feedback either. Whatever you do, don't take a class with this prof unless you want to put in hours every day to succeed.
