Don't take her if you don't need to. One of the worst teachers ever.
Horrible, horrible, teacher and class. Dont ever take unless you had AP Bio or really serious about pre-med. If your inbetween majors, Dont take it. Very very bad class
She's very passionate about how things work in biology and an excellent teacher. Her grading is tough but participation counts a lot. She's very helpful but only if you ask for it.
If you can avoid it, do not take her class. She briefly discusses the most important concepts, and does not seem to care at all about her students.
This woman has no idea how to teach period. Just reads off the lecture slides. Doesn't care at all about her students. Exams are ridiculously hard, asking the most minute details.
Take Biology 215 at another school during the summer. Avoid taking this class at all costs. (unless another professor is teaching it, then it should be easy.) First pre-med class to get a B in, and studied for over 20 hours for every test. The material is not hard, but she will find a way to trick you. You need to memorize every little detail.
Going to her is just so darn intimidating... She's apathetic to students' feelings and frustration- her downfall as a professor. She is indeed knowledgeable to teach the class, but her tests were unnecessarily tricky and confusing. The class itself was very interesting, but she was not.
Haywood is awesome. She's tough but she's fair. The bad comments about her are from lazy students (I know...some of them are my classmates).
Haywood would be an excellent high school freshman bio teacher. She knows the basics, but ask her a question about anything bio-related in detail (which premed students tend to do as they are naturally curious about the subject matter) and she flounders. Her tests are poorly worded and when asked for clarification, she does not help you understand.
I read the book before each lecture, and I made sure I learned everything a week or two before the test. I made sure I knew all the learning obj's in detail. It was tough but I got an A (was under by 3-5 points but I talked to an administrator). If you are lazy/unmotivated, don't take this class.
Haywood>>>Cullis! Haywood is very clear on what she expects. If you took AP Biology, don't expect that to get you through this class. Don't slack off and you'll do fine though. Clicker points are 10% of your grade, TAKE THEM!
Absolutely worst temper ever and her class is pretty hard
Dr. Haywood is a tough professor and her class requires quite a bit of work, but if one pays attention and stays on top of the heavy workload, the class should be easier. Dr. Haywood is extremely helpful and always willing to meet outside of class. Because she is demanding, students dislike her; overall she is one of the best professors I've had.
Her class is fine. Yes it is difficult but it prepares you for Grad School/Med School. People complaining about the book? Why are you studying the book when she mostly sticks to her lectures as knowledge to know? Go to class, take good notes, review on Media vision, go to the SI's and REFER to the book but don't study it.
Go to class, take notes, pay attention, media vision all the lectures before every exam, study the slides, and you'll be fine. I didn't use any of the SI resources. Her questions are kind of tricky, but if you do as I say I promise you'll at least get a B. I really don't think she's THAT bad, but some people really don't like her.
Tests are ridiculous. It doesn't matter how well you know the material, if you're not a good test-taker you're screwed. Good luck.
Refuses to take suggestions as to how to improve her class when they are clearly needed. Tests are ridiculously hard...she obviously knows her stuff pretty well but has absolutely no idea as to how to pass that knowledge on to students.
I'm surprised by all the negative comments. Sure, she can be a little brusque in class, but I can understand why; she is often inundated by dumb questions/people just trying to make themselves look smart. If you pay attention in class (which are great), study and attend SI sessions the tests are straightforward. Plus she's a real cutiepie :)
Studied and knew material. Question were meant to trick and became unclear because they were manipulated to be tricky. not bad class.
She's a little bit weird... She's ok at teaching I guess, but she's really interested in fruit fly and E coli sort of stuff, and she get exciting in talking about them... Her exams sometimes hard, you really have to memorize her PPT. It helps a lot.
Hey class isn't that bad. It's actually quite enjoyable. People hate her so much because they want bio to be the "easy" pre-med class and they're mad at her when they find out it's not. Haywood is a nice lady and very approachable. Just study her slides a little every night and you'll do fine. Go to class and use the clickers, too.
She is a great teacher. The tests are hard but she tests directly from her lecture slides and notes on blackboard. She is extremely knowledgeable in biology. I didn't realize how great of a teacher she was until she went on maternity leave but I really miss having her as my bio teacher.
Your best bet is to Mediavision the lectures. If you've got a good biology textbook, don't bother getting this one - it's a reference material at best. Study her slides, and prepare for her tests by assuming everything she says will be on the exam. It usually is. If you're patient and good at reading comprehension, you'll do fine on her tests.
make a lot of efforts to stay awake but failed..The objectives seems easy but the exam questions are really tricky.
Haywood is a nice professor when you approach her one-on-one, but in class she isn't the best. It's very lame how she doesn't allow computer/phone use in class, even for taking notes. I have resorted to MediaVision. DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK, you will not use it. Study previous tests and you will do well.
A lot of people complain about this class. But honestly, if you go to class, take notes, and study for her exams, you'll be fine. I never read a single page of the textbook; just watch media vision to study for exams & know her learning goals/lecture slides REALLY REALLY well. She is also very helpful if you email her your questions.
Haywood is a really great teacher, who really loves what she teaches. Though many people don't like her and say that her class is really hard, I found the class to be very enjoyable, interesting and challenging (in a good way). If you work hard and study, you will get a lot out of this class. Tests are off of lecture slides.
A difficult teacher, but very astute in the subject matter. Attending class and mediavision were very helpful, but the book was a waste. If you bought the book used in 214, don't bother. The learning goals simply condense the lectures, so stick to one of the two( i preferred mediavision to the learning goals).
Memorize every word she says on Mediavision. And memorize them well. Her tests are extremely tricky, but in all fairness, she covers everything that is on the exam. She knows her stuff and lectures well.
As everyone else has said, the tests involve rote memorization of minute detail. She herself is very knowledgeable in the same way wikipedia is. Her teacher-student relationship is abysmal at best seeing as she, though young, is outdated in her teaching style.
Haywood goes extremely fast in her lectures and does not slow down. Notes would be easier to take down with a laptop but electronics are not permitted in her class. Learn to take notes fast and well and maybe you will understand this class.
Ridiculous pace during lectures, complex material. Exams are very difficult.
Don't take the class lightly. It's hard and her tests are sooo hard. First test is easy dont get overconfident.
Tests require you take the material one small step further, but once you understand her style of test taking (tricky use of negatives, etc.) you can easily do well in her class. Honestly, going to class is optional; just watch mediavision and answer her learning goals thoroughly. Haywood is a good teacher, don't let her reputation precede her.
She presents the material so quickly that it makes it hard to take notes... so just watch media vision. The book is useless, don't read it. Her tests often focus on minute details, and all questions are written to be tricky (with use of negatives, "more than 1 of the above", "none of the above" - etc.) Thus testing 4-5 concepts with each question.
Dr. Haywood is awesome, despite what everyone says. If you take the time to meet with her during office hours, she's so nice and helpful. Her tests are hard, but if you put in the work you can get an A or a B. Do not take her class lightly though! (Side note: I think she looks like Kristen Wiig with short hair, which maeks her even more awesome)
She's a great professor. She's very helpful outside of class. The caveat is her tests are truly challenging. Don't be intimidated by her in class because she's actually a very passionate teacher about biology and make sure you study what you need a little bit everyday. Don't read the text book but memorize what she says in class.
Although Dr. Haywood goes through her slides quickly, she is a good lecturer and is very clear in class. The textbook is not helpful because most of what you need to know is from her lecture slides. Tests are hard and mostly consist of applying concepts, so know the basics! She repeats questions from Mastering Biology on tests often.
Excellent professor despite what others say about her. She goes through material very quickly in class, but it's not too bad since there's Mediavision online. Also, her tests do require some critical thinking. If you know your material well and can take it one step further, you should be fine though. Just know everything she covers in class well.
She's really attractive and she is good at explaining things!
Haywood covers a lot of material in class. She is also a fast lecturer. Mediavision saved my life in this class. As long as you have good notes, you should do fine. The tests are very fair.
Haywood is extremely personable and is really good at explaining the material in a way that's pretty straightforward. It's a ton of material, but if you take good notes in class and MediaVision, you should do fine. I really liked how she used learning goals to emphasize what was on the exams, so you could focus your studying.
By far one of the hardest classes I haven taken at Case. If I could go back in time I would have prepared a lot more for this class. Grades are based mostly on 4 multiple choice tests, which just happen to be the hardest multiple choice questions ever. If you don't study for this hardcore, you're gonna have a bad time. MEMORIZE AMINO ACIDS!
Nope.
Dr Haywwo is a tough but fair grader. Her lectures are very thorough and she does a good job emphasizing the important aspects of most important materials. She lets students know she is there for them. I feel she does a great job preparing you for other classes as well - if you can do well in her class, you will do well in all classes.
Haywood is the best Bio professor at Case. Tough class, but clear expectations.
Her lectures can be confusing. Nothing is hand graded. All tests are scantron 50 hard, confusing questions. Learning goals are semi-helpful not really. Uhm.. attendance is taken through clickers but not worth pts. No technology use at all.. and homework is graded hard (through software). Also, no final exam! So beware!!
Going to class is pointless because Haywood doesn't let you use laptops and she is a fast lecturer, so trying to take notes is impossible. However, if you rely on media vision, KEEP UP with her. 2 lectures a week may seem like nothing but it takes about 3 hours of MediaVision per lecture. Her test are tough but an A is possible if you work hard.
Everything you need is on the slides. Never even opened the book. Skip class and watch the MediaVisions on x1.8 speed to get the most effective learning experience because you'll definitely end up falling asleep in class. Homework problems really help you understand what's going on but I'd never pay $60 to do any HW assignment worth %10 of my grade
Professor Haywood is awesome! Love her!!! She is super enthusiastic about biology. She tells you exactly what will be on the tests. The class is difficult, but if you study the learning goals she provides, you can get an A.
Never went to class and still did pretty ell. The trick is to watch the mediavision instead of going to class (do so if you have questions otherwise don't). Don't buy the book it's a waste of money EVERY single question she gives is purely based off of her own notes.
Haywood speeds through slides, without explaining clearly and expects (she doesn't tell you that she expects this) that you know more than what was taught in class, although her first lecture of the semester she stated and had written on the PPT "you only need to know what is discussed in class, beware its a trick.
Lectures are long and dry, can't tell if it's her teaching methods or the course material. Tests encourage memorization over application and cover a lot of material. Questions from past tests show up again verbatim so be sure to look over the questions most of the class gets wrong. She is really pleasant to talk to though if you go to office hours!
This is a very difficult class. However, despite what a lot of people may say, Dr. Haywood really wants to see you succeed and, if you reach out to her, will work with you and do everything in her power to make sure that you succeed. Be prepared to do a lot of studying and you will do well in her class. She is super knowledgeable and a great person
Typical biology class, not that hard.
This class definitely emphasized memorization over understanding, but the grading system and expectations were very clear. Overall, not too difficult, though some test questions were ambiguous.
Lecture is pretty straight forward you can pretty much just media vision it. Her tests are based pretty much off her slides and learning goals she posts online so if you study those you're pretty much set. A lot of memorization.
The class itself is not that hard. The lectures can be quite extensive and monotonous however, it is biology. The tests are not difficult if you follow the learning goals that are posted online.
She gives learning objectives for every class. Very helpful. If you can't pass, you're an idiot. So tired of seeing classmates whine and complain about work. The course objectives she gives are clearly explained. Finally a teacher that doesn't pacify our generation.
The test questions are very hard and specific and she gives very little practice problems that are similar, except on the homework. So if you are having trouble on the homework and not doing well there, you definitely wont do well on the tests either. She makes herself available to help you out though, and is a very nice person.
Lectures are long but exams are not hard.
Dr. Haywood's class is lecture heavy. Almost no one shows up to lecture after the first test because her lecture slides are posted on blackboard and are very comprehensive. Attending class isn't necessary to do well. Some of her tests are tricky but it's fine if you study. Not very pleasant outside the classroom, kind of condescending.
Dr. Haywood is a competent teacher who can best be described as boring. While she certainly tries its hard to pay attention in her class due to the monotonous nature of her PowerPoint presentations. 215 is easy to get an A simply make sure to study the learning objectives before the test, notably less than half the class shows up.
How the heck did you all get As, the class is hard as heck... I'm halfway through with this class and my grade is nearly bamboozled beyond repair! Bamboozled! I honestly can't understand how more than half the class last semester got As. Jeez I must be quite stupid.
Mediavision is your best friend!! She goes too fast for you to absorb the material fully, especially when the material gets hard. Do the learning objectives at the same time and everything will be fine. Don't even bother getting a textbook. Completely useless.
She doesn't allow laptops in class. She doesn't let you use your phone in class. She doesn't respond to emails. She goes really fast in the lectures.
Her exams are all multiple choice & based off of the lecture slides, but I found them to be tricky. Do not take her class if you do not have to. I made several attempts at meeting w/ her & she was extremely discouraging each time. One of the worst professors I ever had here. She doesn't allow laptops in class, goes extremely fast, and is boring.
An easy A! Just go to class and review the ppts you'll get an A.
All multiple choice tests. Going to class may seem pointless but go to class!! Listening to her teach will help you when you are studying for the test. 4 tests, each worth 20% of the grade and MasteringBio HW worth 20%. Go to class, listen, come home, review a bit. You'll be set for an A.
Honestly this is a very tough and lecture heavy class BUT if you literally do what she tells you to, like doing all the learning objectives and rewatching some lectures, you will be totally fine! Not an "easy A" but if you work hard getting an A is super attainable and she's a great teacher. I'm in this class currently and its very rewarding : )
This class emphasizes memorization of slides more than understanding, but if you study the slides and do the learning objectives, you should be fine. You do not need to attend class since half of the class never showed up and instead watched Mediavision. Stickler with the rules. Graded by 4 exams and homework assignments with a little extra credit
This class is one of those classes where it expects less from you than what you imagined. Honestly, reading the textbook is like overpreparing for this class. If you pay attention during lecture and review her lecture slides before a test, then receiving an A in the class should be fairly easy.
I learned so much in this class. Ready to move on to the next level. Not an easy class but informative. The Professor was always helpful and answered emails. I would like to have this Professor again
Not an easy class, but Haywood makes the expectations very clear.
Dr. Haywood is not an interesting lecturer. She teaches very slow and the information isn't that interesting. The class is not mandatory and it is mediavisioned. Tests are straight from the slides and all multiple choice so if you study you should be fine.
She isnt a terrible teacher by any means but her classes are ve slides heavy. Its more beneficial just to watch the MediaVision. As long as you study to the objectives you should be okay on exams. She wont answer any emails though. Tbh I wish theyd choose a different faculty member to teach her courses since theyre required for so many of us.
Haywood's class is not an enjoyable one. She gives off an air of entitlement and is not fun to listen to. An education stickler with multiple choice tests? Lol. Clicker Q's are not for points, so I wouldn't bother going to lecture. Watch the Mediavision, memorize answers to the learning outcomes, and you'll be fine. Never looked at the textbook.
Every class is off a PP, but Haywood lectures well. Everything is on mediavision and there are no clicker points, so class isn't mandatory. Test questions come straight from information in her lecture slides, which she posts. Your grade is determined from 4 exams and hw. Class is difficult but doable, and Haywood is a very nice professor.
Dr. Haywood can be somewhat abrasive and condescending, and her lectures are nowhere near entertaining. But, the content was pretty straightforward and she conveys it well. Tests are all multiple choice, there was no final. Not a great professor, not the worst either. Never once needed the book tbh.
The class is pretty much useless to go to. Learn the learning objectives through mediavision and the exams will be easier! Also the questions she tells you to review will more than likely be the exact same question on the exam so look over previous exams.
Easiest class at CWRU. Attendance is not mandatory (I didn't go to class). Study Strategy: I watched the mediavisions, made flashcards for the learning objectives, memorized them, and was able to get an A. The class consists of online HW (20%) and 4 tests (20% each) which are not cumulative - there are 1-2 questions from previous tests.
A lot of material, but Haywood makes the expectations clear. She makes class interesting, good teacher.
hard class though not undoable. Simply looked at media visions and tried to memorize slides for tests and got a B. Didn't put more than a day or two in for studying so probably my fault. 4 mult choice exams that can definitely be tricky with wording. I thought it would be straight memorization for some reason but it is application mostly.
The online homework is ecessivley difficult, graded for credit (-75% if question is wrong), Haywoods teaching strategies are speratic and dont make much sense, lots of unlinked information. Sitting through these lectures makes me want to put a pencil up my nose and crack my face on the desk.
Dr. Haywood is a very knowledgeable professor that gives good lectures. However, a lot of the exam questions are about nit-picky details from her PowerPoint Slides. It would've been more useful to test students on important bigger picture questions instead. Also, her office hours are short. If you take the course, memorize the slides get an A.
Goes over 70 slides per lecture, and goes over tons of materials very quickly. Much more effective to review ECHO360 and complete her learning objectives than losing focus during class. Her tests can be very detailed and it is more application, so make sure to know everything on her slides.
Honestly, I was able to get an A in this class only because of the Coronavirus situation, but otherwise, I think her class is really difficult, but what can you expect from a bio class? I learned A LOT in this class and her tests are super specific, but I really thought the course was interesting. She told us that 40% of the students get As though.
Is Dr. Haywood the worst lecturer? No. Is she fantastic? No. Dont go to class, watch the Echo360, and study the learning objectives and you can get an A. Note that she can be a tad short with her students (doesnt seem to hold them in high regard) and has a reputation of being kinda strict in lecture. Overall shes solidly mediocre; youll be fine
Haywood is VERY strict and doesnt care what people think about her; which makes it difficult to take advantage of office hours etc
Valerie Haywood is THE laziest professor Ive ever had. When class was in person, she read directly off the slides . When class moved online(Spring 2020)she only used prerecorded lectures from previous years without checking them over to edit out the times when she had students in class discuss, which meant you had to skip through like 5-10min
Doesnt care about students. When the virus hit, she only posted lectures from previous years. Where other profs got creative, Haywood tried to get out of doing any work. I cant imagine she did any work for this class once the virus hit.
(in covid times right now) started this class fall 2020. posts lectures from spring 2020. doesnt allow us to skip when students discuss answers. goes over 70 slides per lecture (lecture is twice a week). laziest professor ive had. I dont even know what she looks like. only saw her once on the first day of class. worst class to take at case.
Test on everything
VERY lecture heavy, you can't write notes and you have to watch the lecture later. Tests were completely based off memorization of the hundreds of slides.
Basically just know the stuff on the slides well and anything else she specifies and you'll do well. Her expectations are clear, but not a whole lot of interaction with the students.
for the fall 2020 semester, prof Haywood simply posted echo360 videos from spring 2020 for half the semester then videos from even longer ago. we have seen her 4 times as she proctored our 4 exams in which she also never talked, only types in chat. the exams are on the smallest details in the powerpoints. avoid and take another sem.
For the whole semester, she didn't appear. Just posted lectures via Echo360 and watched before the next day to take attendance. I believe that nobody could attend her office hours since it is overlapped with other classes (like Chem). But she replied email quite fast. The test is easy, just have to remember all the details from lectures' slides
SO. MUCH. MATERIAL. VERY unhelpful during office hours (she answers most questions with "look back at the slides"). Memorize slides: there is no other way to succeed and nothing else needed. Don't Google information because she grades based on the information on her slides. Strict about grade changes; gives you little time to look over answer keys.
Horrible experience, everything is graded on the slides. Two recorded lectures a week and so disorganised. She says she is about to talk about 1 thing and then does off on a tangent. I do not recommend the class at alll.
I LOVE HER! She's really nice and LOVES biology, which makes her an amazing teacher! You just need to memorize everything on the slides, and you're set! Just watch the recorded lectures a couple of times, once while taking notes and once without, and it'll really help you! The tests usually have multiple easy questions and only a few tricky ones!
I absolutely LOVE Dr. Haywood! Her lectures are so in-depth, and she is incredibly accessible outside of class--along with her UTAs. The exams are off the lecture slides, so the class is a lot of memorization, but she makes the content so engaging and fun to learn. I personally love the content of this class, she's the best! :)
Professor Haywood was a great biology prof and her lectures were very detailed yet concise. Her exams are mostly based on memorization, so memorizing the slides and reading the textbook helps. I never used office hours but she was accessible through those and her grading criteria were clear and objective.
Dr. Haywood has been one of the best professors I have met here at Case. Her passion for teaching reflects in her lectures. She is very accessible which helps you clear any doubts. Her course structure allows room for improvement in each consecutive exam. Make sure you do all Mastering Biology questions and understand every topic thoroughly!
I found the tests to be pretty difficult, so be careful if ur not the sharpest crayon in the shed like me. Then the Masteringbio multiple choice format was difficult for me personally to do well on and to use to study, so that didn't help. But those are personal issues so if you don't relate don't worry. The lectures were good.
Professor Haywood is an extremely smart person. She knows what she's talking about, and expects you to understand it. She's good at presenting information, but it's a lot. Class was all asynchronous, which can be tough considering the videos took me 3 hours on average. Tests are very straight forward. Know the material very well, get a good grade.
Great professor. All the classes are in person but videos can be seen remotely on Echo 360. This was my easiest class even though there's a lot of content. Pls, don't worry much and look at the slides. Nothing can stop you from getting the A. My lowest grade on the exam was 90.
All the exams are based on memorizing the lecture slides from class. She does not throw too many curveballs so as long you have studied the content well enough you will be fine. Lecture can be boring as she is just reading off the slides, but overall she is a very good and nice professor.
Extremely easy tests. I am not sure if it is because of the online course format, or it has been always easy like that.
Do not buy the textbook bc Dr. Haywood's class is based on everything in her slides. Her tests were pretty easy as long as you understand the content well enough and looked through the MasteringBio questions before the tests. The Bio SIs are also a pretty good source as well. She also records her class on Echo360 so you can always go back & watch
If you do not memorize every single word on her lecture slides (which are >70 slides per lecture, and ~10 lectures per unit) good luck. If you have a photographic memory or can memorize a ton of material super easily, go for it, but otherwise steer clear. And the stupid learning objectives don't help at all.
BE WARNED** Made me want to drop out of university. I took her class twice and failed twice! When I asked her what I could do to learn she basically called me stupid and said I just wasn't understanding the information. 100+ slides every lecture. be prepared to memorize every word on every slide. She says the exams aren't cumulative but they are.
Memorizing the learning objectives does not help. Do not waste your time taking this class if you do not have to. Your mental health will deteriorate along with your physical health as a result of the stress that this class will give you. You can spend most of your days studying for the exams, but you will never know enough.
I can understand the argument that her testing format is kinda lazy on her part. BUT, that does not excuse you from being lazy on your part. Three tests so far lowest score was a 94. I wouldn’t bother going to lecture. AlI I did was watching recording and reviewing MasteringBio before the exam. Her test average was about 82, so it’s def doable.
Tests are fairly straightforward but def memorization and material heavy . About half the class gets above a B, which is def on the easier end of the spectrum in terms of grades compared to other professors at case. A good bio foundation goes a long way in doing well in this class. Very lazy professor and mediocre at best!
VERY HARD CLASS! she goes through like 500 slides in an hour. you are gonna have to memorize the slides per day if you want a good grade. say goodby to ur social life.
Weekly mastering biology assignments are very important for understanding the material and boosting your grade as they are worth one exam in terms of grading. Lectures can be long and personally, I had to rewatch them multiple times to understand. Tests are all multiple choice and can be tricky but class is doable if you put in work and time.
Some stats thrown out a few minutes ago: 45% got an A, 30% got a B. BIOL 215 is considered a weed out class for pre-med, but I think it's reasonable. Grades are based on four non-cumulative exams and MasteringBio assignments. The only thing is the sheer number of slides in each of her presentations. Likewise, the class is memorization-heavy.
This class was a joke. Almost 45% kids got A's in her classes. Compared to other classes in science and engineering I'd have to say this was by far the easiest.
Tests can really make or break your grade in this class. The content was extremely difficult, which is why it was considered the premed weed out class but tests were incredibly straightforward and simple. Do the learning objectives! As long as you memorize the slides, you will be fine.
Doing bad on one test means you're basically done. I got a D on the first exam but the next 3 were all As due to the help she provided when I went to her office hours where she was very helpful. Lots of hours of pure memorization
I'm surprised so many people here dislike Dr. Haywood. She's not the most engaging lecturer, and I often found myself getting distracted and sleepy during her classes, but her class was easy enough that you could pass without too much worry. If you reviewed her 250+ slides before each exam, the class was a guaranteed A. Just get ready to memorize
Just wanted to say that the 4.1 difficulty is absolute bogus. Professor Haywood is definitely one of the easier professors at case as a pre med. Exams were super straightforward and predictable if you read the slides and did the masteringbio. Haywood is super nice as well and almost half the class finished with an A.
She spent half an hour talking about her family on the first day of class and instead of the syllabus, telling us to read it in our own time. Furthermore, she won't respond to emails after 5 pm and doesn't respond at all on weekends. Email her 2 WEEKS in advance if you want to get a response. Rethink your career as a professor. Seriously. Do it.
I would simply describe Haywood as annoying. She is the closest thing I had to a middle school teacher at CWRU. Talks to you like you're 5, reads directly off the PowerPoint, and grades homework for accuracy. I would not recommend going to lectures as she can drop your overall grade 1% if she sees you with a phone. Memorize and you will get an A.
She makes you review things out of class connected to the topic but tends to discuss things in class covered from prerequisite classes.
Easiest class I've had as Case hands down material wise and test wise. To be honest those who gave Dr. Haywood 4's and 5's on difficulty rating should not be Pre-Meds, simple as that. Lot's of people I know got A's if they did the bare minimum (do the masteringbio and show up to lectures/watch on echo360). This is def not a hard class
Most of her content is on her slides, which is good, but also renders her lectures useless. Her formatting also makes notetaking difficult, since the slides jump around a ton. If you're willing to put in a decent amount of work, though, its possible to do well. It isn't insanely hard, but the content is not really 'taught' or made interesting.
Easy class overall (easiest bio class at case). Just review often and keep on top of the masteringbio. Quite a memorization heavy class, but material is presented well in lectures and is straightforward. Dr. Haywood is also super kind and approachable during office hours and would be willing to stay over just to help her students
Class was obscenely easy with solely memorization focused. Prof Haywood does her best to ensure that we have as much practice as possible to memorize easier. Just memorize off her 100+ slide per day and you will get an easy A.
Explains topics extremely poorly, so if there is something you do not understand do not ask her. Seems as if she is reading straight off of the slides and it is her first time ever giving a presentation, awkward professor, bad at teaching, does not seem very knowledgeable.
Super easy intro to bio course. Never really went to lecture as the recorded lectures were more than sufficient to do well in. Exams are easy if you do the basic studying, and there is no final exam which is a plus. I wish homework was not graded on accuracy as people don't use it as practice and look up answers online to get a full marks
Dr. Haywood is overall an okay professor. I wish there were exam question practices, as we never really apply the knowledge until there is that test booklet in front of you.
Class is graded by only 4 exams and then a small grade boost of Mastering Bio for homework. One bad exam will tank your grade, I know tons of people who had to drop and retake the class because of one bad exam. If you can't memorize 100+ slides a lecture, good luck... She doesn't really teach, just reads off the slides.
A pretty average class both difficulty-wise and in quality of teaching. I was pretty interested in the content though so I think that made it a more interesting class for me personally. There are a lot of slides but it's more of the content is just spread out through more slides than that there is a lot more content.
Despite all the complaints, the class is quite easy if you are remotely paying attention in lecture and actually bother to participate. In a lecture of a couple hundred students, only about 7 actually participate. To succeed in the class, sit up front and be actively engaged during the lecture. You will find success with ease.
4 tests, difficult content, a lot of memorization. Weekly easy homework assignments. I reached out for help and she responded in an email with "sigh..." followed by nothing helpful, basically saying I was solely responsible for my grade. Wouldn't take again, but it's not like I had a choice she's the only BIOL215 teacher.
Go to lectures. I didnt and it screwed me.
Not a hard class at all. Found it to be a lot easier than 214. Exams are all multiple choice and a fair amount of questions have shown up in the masteringbio. Dr. Haywood is nice and super helpful outside of class. It is evident that she wants everyone to do well.
Heavy memorization based class but fairly easy to do well in. Honestly it's the easiest biology class you'll take at the university. Pre meds who give her a 4 or 5 in difficulty rating should consider another career.
Very rigid in credit and grading, little room to improve if you mess up.
Everything asked on her tests was on the lecture slides. I watched her echo videos instead of attending class. I preferred Echo since I could rewind if I did not understand what she was saying. The questions on the tests are straightforward. If you watch the lectures you should be fine. Overall, I think she is a good lecturer and a fair teacher.
bio 215 has much better content than 214 but also i think dr. haywood teaches in a more straightforward way than dr. bader ever did if you had him.
Terrible, horrible. She just read off of the slides, going to lecture was unnecessary. Doing poorly on one test would result in not getting an A in the course, guaranteed. 75% of people in the class got a B or above, but it's likely much fewer people had a good understanding of the content. She is nice outside of class, I will admit.
Prof. Haywood puts a lot of info on her lecture slides, which can sometimes be straightforward or jump around, making note taking a bit complicated. Also, MasteringBio can sometimes have answers which go against lecture slides and vice versa, so what is the actual answer on an exam is a bit up in the air. Tests are too rigid in grading, too heavy.
Dr. Haywood's class can be hit or miss, but most find success. For a non-STEM major like me, it felt straightforward. She offers clear study guides and is patient during office hours. However, her grading of homework for accuracy and penalizing for phone use during lectures is reminiscent of high school teaching which I found a but annoying.
Highly recommend! Pls put in a tiny amount of effort to actually do the MB questions (instead of googling them) and LOs. Haywood is very nice, although she go fast in lectures. Class is frontloaded with materials you need to self-study, but after first few weeks, it gets easier. Tells you questions that will be repeated on tests. Also no final!
Easiest class I've ever taken at CWRU. As long as you study the slides and apply basic logic on exams, you should be able to get 100%. Around 60% of people end up with an A. If you are thinking of taking Burden-Gulley or Hershberger over Haywood, don't. Most of my friends ended up taking much harder exams, with little to no curve.
EVERYTHING you need to know is on her slides and learning objectives. Write down your responses to her learning objectives (a set of 10-20 questions specific to each lecture) RIGHT AFTER every lecture. This way you digest the info as it comes to you and work doesn't pile up last minute. If you memorize (ex. active recall) these ur guaranteed an A.
Haywood is a nice person but her class is awful. The people on here suggesting some way to get an A are just ridiculously smart. Studying the content religiously only got me a B because there is just so much information. While not as bad as 216 (literal hell), this class is sure to make you question your entire STEM career.
The way to get an A is not the LOs but getting access to past resources. she re-uses content and once you look at her past stuff its a lot easier to figure out her exam style. haywood is like a puzzle, once u figure out how she asks questions, plus review content WELL, exams become easy. my only downfall was bombing the first exam
Does not care about students, just reads off the slides and grades are mostly based on tests which are multiple choice but condescending and can be "select multiple".
Reads off of slides and rushes through information too quickly. On exams, many questions contain one of the above, all of the above, or none of the above.
Very straightforward lecturer. Exams are fair with all content being on the slides but there is a lot and sometimes it's difficult to gauge what you actually need to know. Tests can be tricky with "more than one of the above" and "which of the following is NOT." Overall an A is easily attainable if you keep up with learning objectives and dont cram
The content of this class was interesting and relevant to everyone who wants to go into this type of field. However, Haywood is a super chaotic professor who jumps from topic to topic and is unclear. Watch the lectures again on your own and really try to assimilate the content. This class is not a hard A if you put in a little bit more effort.
Elementary class, If you take the time to study all of the lectures. Really straightforward tests and don't need to show up to class, just watch lectures on ECO.
Good lecturer. Exams are easy. Find exams from previous years, she reuses a lot of questions
Easy course. Very straightforward, though a good amount of content so you can't cram for exams. Exams are also very easy and straightforward multiple choice questions. Some questions come from the mastering bio/clicker questions in class. Everything you need to know is on the slides or discussed in lecture, you don't need to read the textbook.
goes extremely fast during lectures and expects you to know so much for exams. once you get used to her exams they aren't impossible, but you have to study. wasn't that good at explaining material but she was easily accessible outside of class. doesn't round up
extremely rigid grader. Her 50 multiple choice question exams are easy but she has answers that say "more than one is correct" which make you overthink. She is also extremely fast in lectures where I don't have time to finish writing all the notes on her slides and have to take pictures of each slide before she changes it.
U.C. Davis called and they want their PhD back— Dr. Haywood is an absolute joke of a lecturer. Maybe stick to plant biology? Her lectures were sporadic and incomprehensible. Don't bother attending, you are better off teaching yourself. Her posting slides with missing blanks taken out of them should have been the red flag to drop the course.
Dr. Haywood was not accommodating at all. She was very passive aggressive when I met with her about my performance in the course. She offered no help.
don't bother going to lectures; watch the echo360 at your own pace and thoroughly understand everything. test questions are very predictable, similar to the homework. not a difficult class once you do enough practice + hw counts as a big portion of grading so get it correct
Lot of work but elementary typa class. I didn't go to lecture all year (no point, attendance not mandatory) just watched the Echo360 because it helped me learn the content better. Have good connections and you should get an easy A.
