Just plain nasty.
A marvelous teacher who passionately loves her field.
Totally on the ball! Way to be professor! I learned a lot!
One of the best profs ever. Interesting lectures and interested in students.
Great Prof! One of the best!

Wonderful Prof, excellent and easy going teaching style, helpful and considerate
Generally a good professor. Unfortunately does ask very vague questions for mid-terms and exams. Choice of readings is also drab and dark.
one word: RUN But if you can handle reading about 30 reserves you'll do just fine
Fantastic. Really passionate about her work. Her lectures are interesting and easy to follow. Overall a very enjoyable class. Prepare for reserves.
Very rude, unpersonable, boring novel selections. Don't take a course she is teaching EVER
she is such a well rounded professpr I did not do well in her class she is a hard marker but she is so interesting and it is worth taking her class. she is organized and helpful in her lectures. hard marker though
Dr. Legge is a very intelligent, well-rounded woman. her only down side is that she is perhaps too tough of a marker for 2nd level english courses. She isnt very compasionate with her students and is generally much to moody and uptight.
Very hard to get along with, does not like to give students benefit of the doubt. DOES NOT CARE ABOUT HER STUDENTS!!!!
tough marker and as I recall her voice was extremely loud - do not attend class if you are suffering from a headache/hangover, or any other related ailment.
I took 2 courses with this woman b/c she was a great prof. The ones who said she doesn't care are lying, she helped me out a lot and always checked back to see how I was doing. She does expect a lot but I think we should learn expect more from ourselfs!
she's a decent prof ... marks fairly
Dr. Legge is a very intelligent woman, and her lectures are quite interesting, as were her choices of texts for the courses i've taken with her. However, she is very broad in her testing questions and it seems there isn't an answer worth an A in her courses.
Dr Legge has lost touch with her undergrad students. From the amount of reading she assigns (approx double my other English courses)it appears she believes that all her students are only taking that one course, and have no life outside it. Unsympathetic and unreasonable, especially if you're male.
difficult grader
She is a lovely woman and polite enough. but she dosen't give you any leeway with regards to essays, i have a 88 and a 82 in my other english course this semester but with hers i am currently 52% go figure. the final is worth 50 so hopefully i get pull up to a 60 at least.
For God's sake don't take a course from this woman. In my 3000 level Eng courses this term, my averages are 85 and 90. I do way more work for her 2000 level course and my average is 68! What the!? She is very knowledgable in her field, but is far too demanding of her undergrad students. Boring too.
My average in this course is quite horrible. She seems to really enjoy english but somehow fails to communicate with her students. Furthermore, The workload is pretty heavy.Unless you are willing to raise your personal bar extremely high,I do not recommend taking this course.
I liked this prof. She was always very fair and though she expected a lot, she was always there to help. I learned a lot and ended up enjoying the course more than I thought I would.
Never take a course from this woman. SHe is boring, contrary, and a very had grader. I get A's in all my english courses, but get 60's from her, even though I work harder than usual. She sucks.
This is the worst prof I have encountered in University and I have two degrees! I did this course by distance so all I had to rely on was the manuel. She expected us to read her mind and feed her back her own ideas, despite the fact that there was no way to know what these ideas were. I always ge
She's a hack - and I don't say that lightly. Her marking techniques are questionable. Half marks on a reading quiz because you couldn't remember the last names of all 20 characters is really unfair, even if the quiz was only worth 10%. After reading some of her reviews on here, I'm terrified to ask her for an extension on my term paper.
I've always done good in english, but not in her course its as if the way ive always written is good enough for all other profs except her. I also didnt find her very helpful and she doesnt leave much feedback on tests and assignments

She really knows her stuff, you cannot help but learn in this class. She is big on class participation. She is demanding but fair.
She is very knowledgable and creates interest in the subject. She is a fair marker, so be prepared to apply yourself (Remember: This IS university) TIP: If you want help, see her personally as opposed to using email.
This Prof is an excellent professor. She is very knowledgable and fair. Many ppl leaving comments are disgruntled students that dont study. this is University not Highschool so grow up. She is very fair.
Dr. Legge is an amazing woman, and an excellent professor. She is very approachable, helpful, and smart! I enjoyed her class so much last semester, I am enrolled in her fourth year Canadian Explorer course this semester. I would recommend her to any student that likes to have great communication with their professor!
very sweet. She seems kind of shy in front of the class but is a good overall prof. She promotes class discussion (but not in a forceful way) rather than lecturing for the whole class. The texts she chose were also pretty good!
Prof is stern, mean, and unapproachable unless she takes a liking to you. Hates people missing class, and feedback is harsh and unreasonable. Also, has made inappropriate comments to students during presentations. Do not recommend if looking for a personable prof; but material is concise, and lectures are well organized.
Really good Prof. Not sure what all the negative comments are about, Dr. Legge is a fair marker and a nice woman. However, I do agree that there were a lot of readings for a 2000 level course. Not terribly difficult regardless.
Many unfair/misleading on comments here. Dr. Legge is a very nice person and an excellent professor. She is a fair marker - show up to class and do the work and you'll be fine. I have taken English 2160(Aboriginal Lit) and 3152 (Early Can Lit). I would definitely recommend, especially if you are interested in First Nations/ Inuit peoples.
one of the best profs i have ever had. she is very willing to give you extra help, she is a fair marker and as long as you show up to class, you will do fine. the work is easy and her lectures are very informative. loved her course!
An amazing prof, extremely learned and intelligent. She taught me that reading literature is like an investigation, you are reading but you are also thinking.
Did this course by distance, and I have to say there is no correspondence despite that pretty much being the main point of a distance course. She doesn't weigh in on discussions or answer questions posed in the discussion forums. I've done well in all other English courses except this one. Be very wary of this Prof.
Stay away from this prof. She is very vague and inconsistent. All her evaluations are around the 50% mark and she often gives 8-10 people (out of 40) a 0 and fails about half the class.
Valerie chose interesting texts and constructed novel evaluations, but administered this course badly. Instructions were often vague, if not conflicting, and her (occasionally rude) feedback often reflected unmentioned expectations. Also, there was simply too much work for the level - I wrote over 15,000 words all told. Not a very good course.
HORRIBLE course and prof!! Dr. Legge gave very inconsistent and vague directions, and then rudely criticized when you did not live up to her expectations. Although I did end up with a decent mark, I hated every second of this course and spent the majority of it trying to guess what was expected.Avoid at all costs!!
Took ENG 2160 by distance and there was no instructor presence, no regular communication, few postings, and we were simply left on our own in the course. If I wanted a course like this I should have taken a self-paced correspondence course.
I have to agree with the other comments. She is pretty useless. No instruction, honestly its pathetic she gets paid to "teach" this course. Interesting material, but the knowledge I gained was from the texts/documentaries and my classmates. She was completely MIA! AVOID!
Does not give good directions. Criticizes you if you do not post, but does not post the questions like she said she would. Evaluates how many posts you have read when you can select all and click "mark read". It's too bad because the material is interesting.
Do not take this prof if it is by distance. She was completely hands-off, no discussion element, no information about upcoming tests, the syllabus was not even written by her it was written by another prof and still contains her autobiography. Huge percentage of the class missed the midterm and she took no responsibility. Just. awful.
Gave very vague instructions for what she wanted from the assignments, then would get pissed off when nobody understood what she wanted and grade everyone badly instead of thinking that maybe she wasn't being clear enough. HUGE 30% weekly discussion portion that was just repeating yourself and brought my mark from an 80 to a 65. Would not recommend
Terrible assessments, no feedback, no rubric. Based on comments I'd bet papers aren't actually read. Zero communication. As others have noted, there is absolutely no discussion with students. Teaching should be a discourse. Ridiculous reading assignments. One week had us reading 700 pages of text. She's quite nice. Wish the teaching was better.
Dr. Legge is a hard marker but she is also really sweet and knowledgeable. I've taken 3 courses with her to date and while they were difficult, the material made them all worth it. Also, she really wants students to meet with her in person. So if you are struggling, go visit her in her office and she will definitely help you. Great prof imo.
So hard to get in contact with and discussion schedule was not made clear at all and ended up bringing down my mark so much. So many of the videos and article were so hard to find. Course material was so interesting but due to the layout of the course I wish I had taken something different.
I took English 2160 with Dr. Legge through distance. The course material was good and I enjoyed it overall but she was impossible to contact and made things more confusing than they had to be. Discussions were organized poorly. She didn't update the course resources and many of the required videos/articles were expired and impossible to hunt down.
She gives vague instructions, feedback, and responses to questions. She was hands-off and there was little communication. We had a term paper but did not get a copy returned with comments, or even a rubric. Instead, she simply made a general comment and gave a grade. I have no idea what I did well or what I could have done better.
I was sitting in class one day and a student was at her door, a student that was told off in no indirect manner by Dr Legge. Her classes are hard to follow. She will not help you outside of class, not even during office hours. She presents herself with an ego bigger than Mars, and, an attitude more sour than salt. Do not recommend.
In my experience, Dr. Legge is a very good teacher and a kind individual. I would highly recommend her classes for people interested in history and Indigenous issues. I took English 2160 (Aboriginal Lit), 3152 (Early Can Lit), and 4851 (Canadian Exploration Literature) with her. Fair bit of reading but the texts were generally very interesting.
One of the worst profs I've had at MUN. She seems to be clear in what she wants on assignments, but on more than one occasion I gave exactly what she asked for, but it was far from good enough to her. She is rude. I had a serious family emergency while taking her class and she made me feel like a horrible person for asking for a one day extension.
The course content is interesting, but the professor is rude and disrespectful. Will never take a course with her again. Very vague feedback and takes off marks because you never included something that was not asked of you to include. Overall worst professor I've ever had.
AVOID. AVOID. AVOID. So rude and disrespectful. AVOID!!
Dr. Valerie Legge is the worst professor I have encountered throughout my University experience. She is extremely unclear about what she wants from students in assignments and discussion posts, takes days to respond to messages and emails, and provide little to no feedback throughout the course. When she does respond, she is brutally rude. Awful.
Dr. Legge does the bare minimum as a prof. I have not received one evaluation yet and there are less than 3 weeks left of lectures. The course is online, she added 200 pages of notes during the first week, assigned 8 novels and we have not heard from her since, except to give evaluation dates. I would never take her class again.
This is the worst class and worst professor I have ever had. She is very ryde, and doesnt use D2L.
She seems nice, but doesn't provide any insight on what she expects on essays, and does not provide review classes.
first 4000 eng (my major) yet it felt like I was taking history instead. Teaching style is almost non-existent, the notes were up online at the being of the semester even tho it was an online course. Her assignments have no outlines with far to much expected for undergraduates. DO NOT TAKE. If i wanted a history course I would have taken one
The course required a textbook and was mostly based off the textbook and notes given during class. It required a lot of reading. Sometimes the class would feel more like a history lesson then english. Make sure you attend class as she does not use D2L.
She is a very tough grader. I am in her online course so I don't know her to well but I know someone that was in her class that said she was rude. I find the assignments that we have to hand in somewhat unclear. We have to make weekly post and she hasn't given us any grades back on them yet to update us on how we are doing.
Dr. Valerie Legge is the worst professor I have had so far. She is extremely unclear about what she wants for assignments and gives very little feedback. I remember she gave me a 0 on one of my essays simply because I forgot to include one little reference, and I had all the other references included. She is an awful instructor. AVOID!!!!
Dr. Valerie Legge is someone I recommend everyone avoid. Her expectations are unclear and she is a brutal grader. She is incredibly rude and unkind when emailing her and talking to her. It's her way or no way and she makes that very clear. Does not care about the wellbeing of her students and is unnecessarily harsh. Avoid at all costs.
Puts almost no effort into classes and no effort into supporting students
By far the worst prof I have ever had. She is unclear about what she wants and is very rude if you try to ask for clarification or help. AVOID
Her course was one of the last of my degree and I was VERY disappointed. Having done higher level courses I Can say her expectations and standards are unreasonable for a 2nd level course. Myself along with others in the course had very negative dealings with her. I was very disappointed with my experience and I would strongly suggest you avoid.
A 1/5 rating is very generous for this prof, she is, by far, the worst professor i've ever had at Memorial University. She has ridiculously high expectations despite giving little to no instructions and absolutely no feedback. She is very rude and known to ignore emails asking simple questions. Her exams are VERY unrealistic. AVOID AVOID AVOID!!
She is an extremely hard grader. I worked on a project for many, many hours and received a low grade so the next project I worked on for only a few hours and received an A. Made no sense. I went to see her about my low grade and she argued that she gave me a low grade based on things that weren't true... I'm not even convinced she properly read it.
Assigns vague assignments which are always hated and adds last minute things on. Harsh when you don't read her mind to give exactly what she wants. Doesn't communicate, course is unorganized, no guidance and left alone to do everything. Wouldn't recommend.
I do not recommend Dr. Legge for any course, especially online. The whole semester she did not contact her students once, we were expected to guide ourselves through the course material based on her vague syllabus. Her instructions for assignments are vague. She does not make clear what she expects from you. Super tough grader and terrible notes.
She thinks you can read her mind and know exactly what she wants. Her feedback is horrible and very rude with almost no actual feedback provided. She does not give much guidance with the only instruction being the syllabus and only ever posts when the next assignment is due. With all assignments class average being low 60s avoid if all possible.
Don't just walk, RUN. RUN FAR AWAY. She is a tough grader and expects way to much. Her feedback is on the boarder of rude, and if you ask for an example of what she is looking for... you won't get it. She is kind though, and will give extensions if needed for a legit reason. so there's that.
This is the hardest I've ever worked for a course and I still came out with a 64, just barely getting the credit. Her assignment instructions are so vague it felt like she was making you guess what you were supposed to do. All of the assignments were technically research assignments but she didn't tell us that until after she had graded them.
very tough grader with little feedback
awful teacher, rescheduled ONLINE quizzes for no reason, and is a very tough grader and everything is very text-based, and no online lectures just a weekly to-do list.
Essays are worth an absurd amount of your grade, while not long to do (3-4 pages) she grades way too tough for an INTRO course. No lectures uploaded whatsoever and just a to do list. Its crazy that she's paid to do this when D2l grades 50% of the work for her
This professor was an extremely hard grader, gave little to no feedback, and did not return essays with grading scheme. I missed one quiz and she did not give me any slack and gave me a zero. The essays we did in this course were extremely confusing and made no sense. very disappointed as i needed this course to apply to my degree.
Is borderline unreachable and grades extremely hard. Doesn't teach nor help students want to learn, I did this course and just wrote up essays on random poems without learning a thing. NEVER TAKE HER COURSE
Did not participate in actually teaching anything, she provided us a dense amount of information, very little to no direction, then simply asked us to write an essay. Repeatedly she would describe an assignment in different ways leading to instructions changing over time, even if it was too late to alter your own work. Godawful, never again.
