This is an easy class if you know your algebra.
Good Teacher. Makes class fun. Mostley everything is done online. Excellent dynamic, gets class envolved and gets tests back to you very quickly.
pretty easy class. all homework and quizzes are online so its not that important to come to class. try to do homework before class so you know what shes talking about.
I have never taken a class with Valarie, but I have worked with her and she is EVIL. She creates the most high-stress type of environment at work that I can only imagine how she must be the classroom. She prides herself on her nickname "Killer Miller." She doesn't like explaining things and makes you feel stupid whenever you ask a question. AVOID
Okay I personally would not recommend to take this prof. She prides herself in being hard and does not like to answer questions. I took the class online so i did not so much care about actually seeing her. When i went to the MILE for help is when i met her. Yeah! I think they should really do a personality check on some of these professors.
I have not taken a class with her, but I have spoken with her regarding another math class. Dr. Miller is extremely rude and impossible to deal with. I can only imagine what her teaching skills are like. No wonder her nickname is "Killer Miller"
She is an amazing professor! Her class is not easy, but you learn a lot. She is VERY helpful! Take advantage of her office hours if you need help!I plan to take her for another math if possible!
I consider myself good at math, and you pretty much have to be if you want to do well on her tests or study a lot. But I love this professor, she knows what shes talking about and is willing to help as long as you do the work first.
She is cruel-As a transfer student I needed her approval to take 2211-Math ACT,35-Math SAT,750-She told me I had too many Ws on my transcript-I was sick that year-"People work even when sick"-I missed a quiz when my dad died-My teacher needed her approval for a makeup which she denied bc my excuse was not exigent-2211,2212 grades A,A+-Kiss it, Val.
I wish that I had read the comments before taking this class bc they were dead on. First, homework is intensive and is checked regularly. Testing is reasonable as well as her grading BUT Dr. Miller is rude and creates a terrible learning environment. She hates it when students ask questions and becomes combative when students are having difficulty.
Dr. Miller is a great prof. but Calculus is hard and you have to work really hard. Do ALL the HW even though they are not required and all the quizzes. The way to pass this class is to study really hard and go to her for help. She is extremely helpful and nice. Her exams are not like the ones on uLearn, they are longer so study everything!!
Dr Miller is a great teacher so long as u dont text in her class. The class is extremely hard but she has a great way of explaining the concepts. She's also very helpful with answering questions. TAKE NOTES, DO THE HW (even tho its not required), AND DO THE QUIZZES, its the only way to pass the class!
She's awesome. She's got an attitude, but that just meant the class was never boring. I wouldn't pick a different teacher if you payed me. Just listen to her instructions and you'll do well.
Great teacher. A couple of these comments on here are erroneous. She isn't rude, she is blunt. She is very smart. PhD in numerical analysis. She is clear, tests how she teaches, and as good as it gets for the subject of calculus. Math 2211 is a dense course. No one can pass it for you. You have to study. That said, I did well because HER.
Really good prof, esp. compared to the other math professors at State. This was one of my weak subjects so I was pretty surprised she gave me a B-, which means she must have curved the final 10pts. But don't let that make you idle, she's tough because the material is tough. She at least shows signs of humanity and isn't a total machine.
She was really nice and extremely willing to help. She also posted study guides to the test online, as well as the test from previous years. The class was no walk in the park, so its best to actually do the homework and ask her for help on the problems that you don't understand.
Dr. Miller is very helpful. Doing homework and quizzes is essential to achieve a good result in this course.
She pretty much knows anything and everything to do with math. Shes a great professor. This class was the most difficult math course I've taken due to the material. However, she tries her hardest to make everything clear and wants everyone to succeed. I would definitely recommend her to anyone who needs to take Calculus I and II.
She's an awesome teacher. Her lecture style is different but effective; really focuses on engaging the class, also adds funny commentary. Yeah they call her "Killer Miller," but she's not that hard, people are just lazy. Gotta do the weekly quizzes/suggested HW, don't BS it! If you don't understand something, go to her office, she's very helpf
She is a very nice/cool teacher. She goes out of her way to help her students. This class really takes a lot of studying to get an A and you cover a lot of material in one semester. Her test are not really hard if you really study, and craming will not work. Go to her office hours they are very helpful!!!
Entertaining lecturer; did lots of problems in class which I think is the best way to learn. The material is hard, but gets easier toward the end of the course. If you do the quizzes and homework, tests are very straightforward (thought fairly comprehensive).Very helpful during office hours as well
Cal 3/Stats is a very hard subject. Dr. Miller gives you take home quizzes that are hard but if you really try, you can do well on most quizzes. She gives good examples during class that pertain to the test. She gives opportunities to make better grades on test if the majority didn't do well. She DOES NOT grade on the curb. A gradeavg D will be a D
Everything everyone is saying is true. What you need to understand is that if your average is a F, that is what you got. Don't kid yourself. I don't agree with things getting easier near the end because it didn't. I suggest you study the subject before taking the class because you will flunk, like I did. She is an awesome teacher but is no joke.
Second time I've had Dr. Miller. The class is difficult (even as an introductory class to linear algebra), but she is great at teaching the concepts, and does many examples in class that will help you with the homework/tests. Quiz every week (really helps prepare you for exams)and the tests are fair. Favorite math professor at GSU so far.
She's good, definitely knows her stuff and is very clear when explaining concepts. if she realizes a couple of people don't get something, she'll go back and make sure everyone understands it, before moving on- which most professors don't do! Gives weekly quizzes, and tests aren't bad as long as you're good on true/false and know the material.
Awesome professor, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. She is very straightforward, blunt, and honest. This can be off-putting for some of the more "sensitive" students. If you put the work in, you will get the grade you want out. If you are looking for an easy A, well, you should probably just drop out and quit wasting everyone't time...
Miller is a great teacher, and she really knows her stuff. She is willing to help you in class and during office hours. The class itself is very difficult though. You will have to put in a lot of effort to pass. I highly recommend getting the textbook for the purposes of studying. The practice problems from the book sometimes appear on the test.
Miller knows her stuff, but isn't clearest when presenting the material. I don't want to discredit her as a teacher (because maybe she's excellent at teaching other courses,) but she didn't meet expectations in this Calc course.
Dont take if you want an A. Took her for summer for Calculus 3 and got the 2nd highest grade in the class.... a B+. Take someone else, you won't regret it if gpa is your primary concern.
Dr. Miller gives grades like they should be. There's no curving a 21 to an 88. She will, at best, give maybe a 5 point curve. This class is for people that should have a solid background in Calc (it's the 3rd calc, what did you expect?). I really enjoyed her style and sense of humor. Please go to class and pay attention.
Dr. Miller is a great professor. Her lectures are always entertaining and easy to understand. She uses many useful real life examples of calculus concepts to help you relate. The class is 4 tests, 10 quizzes, and a final. Do ALL the homework she assigns and you will be prepared. If you have any questions, ask; she knows math way too well.
She's brilliant and lectures are funny & engaging, but she's tough. She won't go easy on you. You must be an A1 calc and math student to get an A. Homework is helpful. Quizzes are tricky and tests are okay. Unfortunately, she won't bump up your overall grade. You truly earn your grade with her. She's the best, but she's no BS.
She is amazing, but wont put up with any of your crap.
By far the worse person I have ever came in contact with at GSU. She is rude and not helpful. I asked her for explanation on an error by the professor and she cannot accept it. I have never met someone with so much attitude towards a student. I would never take a class with her again! I would not recommend her.
She wouldn't clearly define what is expected on tests which is why people don't get good grades. She thinks the class knows more than they possibly can. Never will I take her again
I took this class 8 years ago and she still stands out as one of my favorite professors in school.
VERY STRICT
Dr. Miller is essentially a facilitator for an online class. Everything (!!!!) we did was through a Pearson forum, so nothing goes through her hands. We had "lecture" once a week, paired with two breakout sessions, and the lecture was a lot like a review session. If you work hard, she'll bend over backwards to see you succeed.
she goes over material for the weeks homework on Pearson lab. however the homework and tests are not created by her so it is out of her control as to what is on the test. She will explain to you and work with you during office hours if you are having trouble! I took her twice and I would take her again!
A really great professor. Cares about her students a lot! She was obviously knowledgable at what she taught, so any question thrown at her is no problem. She also responds to emails in less than 5 minutes a lot of times. 10/10 instructor. I learned a lot from her!
Work with her, make the effort to see her and you will be fine!
Her lectures arent clear to how she wants you to respond. What you go over in class and the exams are on completely different difficulty levels. No outside resources, homework, other ways to do problems. Everything is one direction. Her way or no way. She nitpicks your response. Even if it rights but not her way you get half credit. DONT TAKE HER.
Something you should know is almost all math courses at GSU are done through Pearson Math Lab. You only meet with the professor once a week, lab 2x. This class is work heavy, if you put in the work you can pass with a good grade. Professor is helpful if you ask her for help. Make sure you read the text book before doing hw/quizzes. 4 tests, 1 final
Very nice lady she can seem a little intimidating but if you ask for help she will give it to you and explain things clearly.
SUPER HARD. SUPER TOUGH. MEGA RIGOROUS.
If you want to avoid excessive stress, do NOT take her class.
She can be really helpful when it comes to questions even after class ends. She expects you to have the hw done with questions before you go to class so she knows what the class is generally confused about. As long as you get the assignments done and on time in the math lab website your grade will be fine. But tests count for a lot so study.
If she is teaching this class, find somebody else.
One of the WORST professors at Georgia State University. She does not teach well at all and does not properly answer any questions you ask. She also gives too many assignments at once and makes you do projects that are time-consuming and irrelevant to the course. The overall grade in the class relies on exams, which she makes very difficult too.
I took calc 1 with Dr. Miller over the summer course in 2020. This was by far the most stressful class I have ever taken in my entire academic career. I was studying for at least 4 hours a day and I barely passed with a C. The tests are often on things that have not been covered. Find anyone else for calc. No curving/rounding either.
Horrible Teaching. Horrible Method.
I have never done this bad in a math class before and this class was so stressful. The test and final make up more that half your grade and all the test are hard, didnt correlate to our homework. she did not curve any test even if everyone failed. dont take her class i wish i didnt lol
I do not recommend. Her class is so stressful and the tests are SO hard. Your whole grade is basically made up by the tests. She give one extra credit quiz and it was asking impossible questions (not multiple choice either). Lots of online HW through Webassign. Do not take her.
If you care about you well-being, do NOT take this course.
Teaching Method is Cut Throat. She has no mercy.
ACADEMIC HARDSHIP
Very Harsh.
Not worth it.
Dr. Miller is one of the professors I admire so much. She is such a devoted lady into her math teaching, tireless, responsible. I still remembered she can fail even a PhD student. Quality is the most important of her teaching. America needs this kind of serious teacher. You can learn tremendous from her. She is one of the best teacher for QUALITY
She can be slow to respond to emails and responses can be short. But if you attend her lectures, she's great at explaining the material verbally. She's super nice during the lecture but tends to respond slow. In my class we used MyLabMath and we would teach ourselves before class and then review during class.
Dr. Miller is not a difficult teacher. I am struggling in her class, however, there are various resources that one can reach out with in order to improve upon a grade. She will answer many questions, and go step-by-step in order to help you out. She also is super responsive in emails. Basically, do you part and your grade will do its part.
Overall, I really liked Dr. Miller. I am terrible at math and I did not really understand the material. I did not understand the lectures and she didn't really answer my emails. I would suggest her if you are good at math or know what you are doing.
Extra credit: A pre QL and Post QL quiz at the beginning and end of class, she drops one hw and quiz, high final exam grade replaces lowest test grd. You have to do the homework. Lectures are general but you have options in MML to figure it out. SHE WILL ONLY RESPOND TO IMPORTANT EMAILS. I dislike math but this wasnt too bad. Just study.
THE BAD: Quiz every week 10%, Tests are 60% with tough material, horrible textbook, you 100% require chegg for this class. Tough grader, Very few examples (1-2), No curves/extra credit. Fail 1 test and its practically over for you. THE GOOD: Seems nice enough, provides videos of the lecture, open to answering questions (IF your in class).
She is a good professor, she gives so much information very lecture, However, your grade is beast on 3 tests that is worth 20% each and a final worth 25%. She gives weekly quizzes. Her class is very stressful. If you are not good at math DO NOT TAKE HER.
Dr. Miller makes great effort to reinforce the idea that different fields of mathematics are interconnected; this is important is math is accumulative. She can come across as tough and merciless, but all the coddling and grade padding students are used to won't get them very far in life. Make an effort, and you will walk away learning something.
Ms. Valerie is an excellent professor, and I would take her for another class without a doubt. She helps students keep their grades in good shape by giving them many extra credit opportunities. I took linear algebra and had 3 tests (60%), 8 quizzes (10%), homework (5%), and a final (25%). If you pay attention in the class, you will do great.
Sometimes it feels like she's taking her personal frustrations out on the students. She goes out of her way to be as uncaring as possible. The class by itself shouldn't be that hard, but the way she goes about it makes it hard to do well.
I have never been prompted to leave a review for a teacher ever but this teacher was so bad i had to. Tell me how a whole entire class can fail a test thats worth 20% of your grade and not get a single curve. Tell me how youre going to make these tests insanely hard and make them way 60% pf the overall grade. Please save your money dont be me
She doesn't seem like a bad person but is far away from being a great professor. Get ready to memorize every theorem and definition in the book. Tests are rough and most students in my class are failing. Explanations are overcomplicated, if you made the mistake of taking her class use YouTube, those guys actually know how to effectively teach.
Dr. Miller teaches linear algebra and statistics; both of these courses are a bit different from arithmetics students are accustomed to doing. You will not be fine if you are accustomed to plugging and chugging as these courses requires theory, proofs, and logic. Practice writing rigorous proofs if you are intimidated.
Not gonna work out well if you only put in 50% effort. Don't turn exam paper in late, she'll be furious. Bought textbook but didn't help much. Either pay 100% attention in class or you're on your own.
Worst teacher I have ever had in college. From simply not caring about whether her students pass to being completely disrespectful. If you don't hear something she says and ask her again she will add commentary. She also enjoys to call people out in the class.
This has been the worst professor I've had throughout my college years. Some of the questions you get on your weekly quizzes are questions you don't cover in class. Also if you fail one of your test, you can assume you get an F in the class. Do yourself a favor and don't sign up for her class, her goal is to get paid, not for you to succeed.
for stat there are like 3 tests each worth 20% of your grade so gg if u don't pass one, tests are nothing like practice she gives, lectures are confusing, some of the things she teaches isn't even in the textbook or online so gg DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS UNLESS YOU ARE A GENIUS WHO ALREADY KNOWS EVERYTHING ABOUT STAT.
She often explains things in a clearer manner than the book does. The book is still great and you should still read it. Only thing that I did not like was that we were learning up until 2 days before the final exam. Other than that the course is good.
Worst professor in my college whole undergrad degree. Expects students to know every thing from previous classes taken.
She is a terrible grader and professor. Do NOT take her unless you have no other option. Grading consists of 3 tests, weekly quizzes, attendance, and a final. No extra credit. Just bad overall.
If you can, avoid this professor at all costs. Her lectures, worksheets, and guided notes will never fully prepare you for quizzes or tests. She does examples wrong in class on a consistent basis, but if you make the same mistake on a quiz or test little to no partial credit is given.
Please AVOID her at all cost!! She holds the crown for the worst professor at GSU. Be prepared to not laugh at several jokes, while helping her make calculations. Her attitude is very snarky, which made it difficult to ask questions. Lastly, the exams will be majority of your grade. No curves or extra credit will be provided.
The only good thing about her is that she doesnt have mendatory attendance. She gives alot a homework. No study guides!!!
Avoid at all costs, I have her for stats which is a 3 credit hour course but the amount of studying you have to do to even have the potential for a good grade supersedes that of a 4 credit hour course. Grade is determined by 3 tests, weekly quizzes that are on lockdown browser for the most part, and a final exam so no room for error.
There are 4 tests in this class ( including the final ). You are only graded on three things. Three tests, one final, and the quizzes. There is nothing to help you bump your grade up. She is a very hard grader on the quizzes and does not give partial credit at all. She will not round you up or empathize with you. This class is a GPA dropper.
Dr. Miller is an amazing professor and whoever says otherwise is just not willing to put in the work. Her lectures are extremely clear and concise. She explains thoroughly and answers any questions. The class is very exam heavy but if you work through textbook problems and review lectures, you'll do just fine.
Tests matter a lot in this class, and definitely read the textbook. If you take her online, definitely go to her office hours in person or online if possible. She'll be a lot nicer in those sessions as well. Her lectures can drag on and she often teaches as if we already know half the subject, which is why reading the textbook on your own is import
She will go over the book but MyMathLab really came in handy and even then you have to practice, practice practice ! She makes the test and grades them herself, good luck
I like hard classes cz i learn the material better, but this was NOT it. no graded 'assignments', no graded attendance, no extra credit, no graded projects to make up for a bad exam. So there's literally no chance to 'work' for a good grade, quizzes and tests are graded, and if you're bad at them, you'll most likely have to drop this class:/ 2/10.
20% for 3 test each, 25% for finals and 15% for homework and q
The math is hard. The professor is not. Great lectures, records it, and posts it a day after. Each lecture is specific to the current semester, not old recordings. She has randomized ungraded quizzes that you can do unlimited times for practice. She posts the textbook problems, worked out, and solutions, so you can review. Study hard and early!
Not as bad as the reviews are saying. Sometimes made the class harder than it needed to be and many people failed. Exams make up most of your grade. She's definitely sarcastic but pretty approachable. Avoid if you have better options but if not, she's still pretty okay/viable, you'll just have to work hard. She was pretty funny.
This is a warning do not take this professor if you care about your own well-being
People are very critical of her, but she was an amazing professor! Just put the work in and come to class, it is very easy to get an A after doing that. Don't believe every review you see!
I graduated with a BS in Mathematics in 2015. Dr. Miller is one of several amazing professors in the math department that may be considered tough, but will have a lasting impact on your strength in analytics and knowledge of theory & application. I had her my first semester for Calculus 2 and linear algebra 1 & 2 fall-spring of sophomore year.
Dr. Miller has a great sense of humor, she makes her class very welcoming to people of all mathematical backgrounds, I almost failed Calculus 2 however she explained so well in this class I managed to get an A-. There are more extra credit opportunities near the end of the semester. I would definitely recommend her
She expects you to know a bunch of things already but never mentions what all the topics you should review before doing you homework. She makes very questionable jokes, and her lectures can be vague sometimes, and would not cover everything for stuff like quizzes and homework.
This professor was the worst professor I have had in all of my four years in college. She does not explain things well in lectures and skips over important material during lectures that will be on exams. She does not care about her students at all and is not accommodating at all. If you want a good math professor that teaches well look else where.
This professor clearly isn't passionate about her job as soon as we sat in for the first day of classes .Lectures are long and un-engaging and doesn't seem she'll change her methods of presenting this information to us.Assignments are long and tenious and the classroom always seemed dull.WILL NEVER TAKE ANY CLASS THATS RELATED TO HER AGAIN.
She's always rude and defensive when you point out mistakes. Her grading is very unclear and she will randomly remove points even if you do everything correctly. Never have seen a professor who tries to fail her students as much as her. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
She cheats and steals points from you even if you do everything. She will literally rob points if you write an answer to three decimal places instead of two. pointless class
she should be teaching elementary school
The class was presented as a lecture class and that was not what it was. Most of the work was done online in a lab during the week and we were just supposed to know the information that was presented. She only taught us the topics we were doing as homework that week. Her "test reviews" did not help because she would skip over important parts.
This class was more review-like than lecture-based. She goes over some questions from the hw of that week. She can be snarky and catch an attitude quickly. Will hunt you down if you have anything other than math open. Overall, just makes the class dislikable. My advice: take the online version because you teach yourself anyway.
You will have homework assignments every week. The lecture portion of the class is not too bad. Because the labs are before the lecture, the material can be confusing. Be prepared to teach yourself a lot outside of class.
Her classes are more like reviews- than they are teaching. She expects you to know the topics before coming to class. Most of the "learning" came from the online textbook we were required to buy. The HW was extremely time-consuming and tedious. Attendance was mandatory (5% of grade). I wouldn't choose her.
Professor Miller's class is challenging, but engaging if you put in the work. Her lectures are clear, but exams are test-heavy with no extra credit. I found unstuck study's practice quizzes helpful for exam prep alongside the textbook.
run. horrid attitude. class ends at 5:00. literally yelled at me for trying to leave at 5:02?? also threatened to take laptops if we didnt pay attention... are we in highschool? If you have to take her, it's fine. Just teach yourself and ignore her lectures she doesn't make sense.
if you leave class before she dismisses you, you will be marked absent. all work is online on my lab math. she walks around and reprimands ppl for the following: using your phone, headphones/airpods/etc, on your computer, on your computer on a different website. she cold calls during class. don't skip the "lab" days, they're part of your grade.
The attendance did not count towards the grade. Good professor but the coursework was soo hard.
I don't think my class or I had any problems with Ms. Miller, she's very caring, funny, and is very enthusiastic when answer students' questions. If you are on your phone or have headphones on, obviously any professor would be upset at you. I genuinely have nothing bad to say about her, would take again. Don't slack off and you'll be fine.
Excellent notes were made on the board, using different colors to address the importance. Obvious and organized logic from the beginning to the end. Her notes can be samples for school in general. If you want to learn something real, please take her courses.
She isn't a bad person per say, however most of the concepts needed to understand linear algebra. She rather than being coherent with the given topic, will act as if you already knew the topic to begin with, with one not knowing how or what to understand, to then finally tell you what the concept is. As an example LINEAR TRANSFORMATION MY GOD.
She is NOT that bad. Her exams are the same as the HW. The concepts just stack upon each other. If you can get an A on the first test, then the rest of the year is light because you are just doing what you did in test 1 with different concepts. People who did bad in the class just did not put the time and energy which was only like 2 hrs a week max
Do not listen to the other reviews. She isn't even that bad. You just need to lock in during lectures. The tests are the same things you learned in class. Just pay attention to linear transformations. I got an A+ in the class when I was supposed to get a 95. She curved by 2 points. She's chill. All the quizzes are online, no lockdown. Just Pearson
Go to Class. Learn how to row reduce. Once you do, this class is just that. Its not as hard as people are saying it is. She does throw some curve balls on the exams, but if you ask her, she will help. Besides, everything you write down as notes, its gonna be on the exam. She says, "This will be on the exam"
She is wonderful! The class is hard, mostly because the concepts stack on each other, so by the end of the semester they are pretty complicated. I am very glad I took it with her though, my only qualm being lack of visual representation, but that is diffcult without animation and easily supplemented by 3Blue1Brown on YouTube! Would take again.
Dr. Miller was a pretty good linear algebra professor. The subject itself is hard but she didn't make it any harder. She gave good lectures and graded fairly imo. No extra credit only because the math department doesn't do those anymore apparently. Normal amount of HW for a math class. Nothing too crazy imo
She's a chill professor who's easy to talk to and actually cares about your grade. One of the better math proffessors at gsu imo.
Be prepared to do a LOT of homework and quizzes. She gets mad if you do them during lectures but you're gonna have to self-teach yourself the material anyway. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER.
Best math professor I've had in GSU so far, her lectures are very clear and concise, she records her notes and lectures for us to review later thoroughly and covers all the required info properly. She's great at answering questions and I loved how she would always try to explain Linear Algebra concepts graphically.
Too much homework for a 1000-level class, and her lessons were useless to me. Attendance is mandatory for no good reason. She's the grumpiest professor I've had. Reminds me of a weird secondary school teacher I used to have. Avoid her class lol
Ms. Miller was difficult and came across cold. She didn't learn students' names (even in a class of ~30). There was lots of MyMathLab homework, and the exams were tough. Lectures were boring, so I ended up teaching myself. She also made passive-aggressive comments when I needed help.
She may seem reserved at first, but once you get to know her, she becomes more approachable and supportive. Lectures are recorded in case you miss class or need review. Homework is heavy and exams are challenging, so expect to spend a lot of time studying and completing assignments.
