Valerie is nice and not out to get you. She is basically the definition of meh. She isn't good at explaining things. She talks and writes with too many words. The tests are confusing and full of typos. She has slides and reads them in class, but she posts them online anyway so there isn't really a benefit in coming to class. She is okay.
Do NOT take chemistry from her unless you don't care about the subject and are looking for an easy grade. Except putting up with all her mistakes in her slides, examples, tests and grading is not that easy.
I would take Valerie for 121, idk about 161 though. She explains concepts very thoroughly and her tests and quizzes are very easy. She can be a little abrupt when you're just talking one-on-one. There are quizzes almost very week, so while attendance isn't mandatory for anything except the lab, you can't make-up quizzes for any reason.
She is very helpful & nice if you show interest in class or come to her office hours. She asks a few of concept questions on tests, which I liked. So not all of the questions were just solving problems.
She is very abrupt and mean. Embarrasses students in front of the class. She gets frustrated and annoyed easily. She lacks teaching skills.
Valerie knows hat she's teaching, and how to teach it. Her testes are not just problems, but a lot of concept. She is a more difficult teacher, but will explain if you ask her. She is willing to have students come to her office for help and is willing to compromise in certain situations.
After taking Chem 121 with a professor who genuinely didn't care, Valerie was amazing! I would highly recommend her to everyone, but do pay attention. You can't slack off, ignore lab safety guides, and expect her to hand you an 'A' grade. Show respect, get it. She's awesome!
Valerie was amazing. Anyone who has struggled with Chem in the past should take her. If the class isn't understanding a topic she will stop and go back over so everyone is on board. Really helpful, always has office hours and gets back to emails quickly. Don't miss class or lab. Nothing can be made up if missed.
She's a good teacher, but comes across as always annoyed. I don't know if she's intentionally mean or if that's just her personality. If you're thick skinned, take her. If you're more sensitive, take someone else. She is passionate about science.
Valerie was very rude and abrupt. When it comes to exams, she tells you to study something and then the day of the exam you dont need the information. You could have used that time for studing something that was helpful.
Valerie is by far one of the best professors I've had. I was nervous about the material at first, but she was always willing to help and explain things clearly. I highly recommend her! she is the best! :)
This class was much more challenging than I thought it would be. It requires a lot of time. The tests are difficult so make sure you go to class and do all the homework to be prepared. Valerie isn't that great at explaining some of the harder concepts, and if she is behind she zooms through them all, so you really have to teach yourself a lot of it
I really like Valerie. I think she's extremely funny and tries really hard to help you know what to prepare for. Just know that you should be teaching yourself most of the ideas and just come to class with questions to ask. On that note, she's also a tough grader. She enjoys challenging the students.
Valerie actually came into my class as a replacement instructor because my original one was transferred. She actively engaged with the students, responded to emails promptly, and was lenient with grading. Made chemistry interesting for those that weren't originally enthusiastic and the testsquizzes were rather simple if you prepared for them.
She thinks that she is knowledgeable. But no, all she does is ramble on about something not relevant. She has the tendency to explain things and makes it even less comprehensive. Overall, I find that I didn't learn anything from her class. She boasts about being an easy grader. But what is the point when in return you learn nothing?
Valerie is a great teacher and has a few tricks up her sleeve to help you understand the material. Unfortunately the only thing I didn't like about her class was that there isn't enough time to cover all the material. I've never taken chemistry before and I must say it's no walk in the park. Don't skip lectures!!!
she is very energetic and I had fun in class! she is so funny haha Love her lecture! However, the exams are tough and she needs to explain more about lab stuffs.
She's an intelligent woman. But as a teacher, her lectures are all over the place and very hard to follow her thoughts. I'd always felt she was uncomfortable teaching in a diverse classroom as I notice she more open and talkative with certain students while blatantly ignoring others. I do not recommend her if you are serious about learning chem.
Valerie is a very smart woman and a talented scientist. That being said, she is an awful chemistry teacher. Her lectures are useless, her powerpoints are unorganized and her tests are a disaster. She refuses to answer questions directly and is extremely condescending towards students who are struggling with her class. She is an awful instructor.
Great teacher!
She is a great teacher, but students that don't engage in learning will have a hard time understanding her. Lectures are clear and straightforward, because Valerie uses many real life examples to explain the parts that are confusing to people. You definitely need to attend EVERY SINGLE class and open up your ears in order to comprehend the info.
Mosser explains things in a way that makes it easy to understand them. If extra help is needed, she is willing to help you outside of && during class. Makes some jokes during the lecture which makes it fun to be in the class and easier to learn, but dont take it to heart if she picks on you
Thought that HS chem would be enough to prepare me for this class. I was wrong. Although Valerie is a phenomenal instructor, any lack of attention or focus from the student will lead to a drop in grade from the class. I only wish I had realized this earlier. If you have a level head and don't procrastinate, you will for sure get at least a B.
Valerie is a awesome chemistry teacher that really loves the topics that she teaches. You can tell that she loves chemistry, and really cares for the understanding of each student that goes through her classes. Labs are straight forward, and easy to understand with her help. Tests are difficult, but not impossible when you study all the materials.
Good instructor but wasn't a good fit for me. Solid in making lessons clear. Be ready to stay focused and pay attention.
Valerie can be hard to follow - doesn't always say what she means. She gives SO many resources through the class canvas page for better understanding. Uses power points during lecture. Panopto recordings of lectures. Online homework only (Sapling, $30) and take home extra credit. Drops your worst quiz and worst lab grades.
I've had her for only one quarter but I've had a lovely time in class and I feel like she really works hard to help us understand the material.
Valerie and I did not get along very well. She does not seem to have a strong basis for mathmatics, and sometimes said things that were quite inaccurate. She also does not appreciate being corrected. If you are ok being in a class where it is easy to get an A, and are ok accepting information at face value, you might work well with her.
she would give you a bunch of worksheet and you have to complete all of them for credit. About the lab, you must complete your lab report by writing all the procedures, data tables, discussion and results by hand. Tests are tougher than I thought. Quizzes are okay. I dont recommend her.
Take her class and you will learn
I felt that Valerie was a decent instructor. She is funny and her lectures were great. She gives worksheets and online homework that is graded fairly tough. Overall, she is an instructor that really wants you to learn the material and ask questions during office hours or class time if you aren't understanding something. I would take her again!
Doesn't have a good grading system whatsoever so you don't know how you're doing until the course is finished. The material is covered very poorly and the questions you ask don't get answered directly for a definite answer but in words and terms that make you even more confused. She gives little if any feedback that could help you excell in class
Actually kind of mean. Makes students feel stupid in front of the entire class. If someone were to be struggling, they would probably feel too scared to seek help from her. Behaves inappropriately sometimes and kind of aggressively, in terms of the way she speaks. I avoid her classes by all means necessary.
She explains things very well, records her lectures to make them easily accessible later for reference. Its a bit strange to have to ask what your grade is, but if you show up and participate and do the work you can easily pass her class, and shes very knowledgeable. If you like to argue or not do the heavy coursework you will fail.
Val was the best science teacher ever. I looked forward to her class every day. There's plenty of work to do to keep grades up but she taught it in fun lectures that would make sure everyone knew the material. Definitely recommend this class
A lot of studying! 3 exams, weekly quizzes, weekly sapling hw. Pre labs & labs. Exams are half written/half MC. Final is a cumulative standardized test. 55 minutes for 60 questions. it has things you havent learned. besides the final, i liked her. she likes participation but not mandatory
Valerie was very confusing, and would often start her lecture when everyone was still arriving to make a point to listen. I was afraid to ask questions because she would make me feel dumb when the answer was wrong. She is a strange and particular lady
She wants everyone to participate, but makes you feel stupid for not getting the answer right. Her slides and lectures are unorganized, and she makes multiple mistakes during lectures-so confusing! If you're taking this class, rely on the textbook and show up to class if you want to be ridiculed and interrupted. She won't let anyone finish speaking
She was super lecture heavy and a lot of the times her lectures didnt make a lot of sense. She doesnt do practice exams and exams are a HUGE part of your grade. This was frustrating for me as every teacher Ive had does them. If youre a bad tester and have a hard time paying attention, this probably isnt the teacher for you. She was funny
Valerie does NOT post grades online. She makes you keep track of your own grades. This is very frustrating. She is intimidating and difficult to ask questions. I am not the type to shy away from question asking either. I taught myself most of the material in this class. The lecture were a nice guide, but you must study the book and study hard!
Not a great experience, she makes learning a lot harder than it needs to be. If you don't succeed in her class, it's not because you aren't a great student, it's that she isn't a great teacher. I DO NOT recommend taking this class.
I already posted a review of her maybe a year ago but came back to say I still recommend her. I took her for Chem 121 and have taken other profs for 140 and now 161 and shes the best prof Ive had so far. She was kinda rude and frustrating but she taught me the most and I use her techniques to this day. Id take her again
She can be helpful with students who are struggling in understanding a concept. The class was lecture-heavy and there was not much do-it-yourself work in class, so doing the homework and studying is important. The exams ask questions about concepts that were not thoroughly taught in class. Sometimes she would contradict herself during lectures.
Really difficult. I ended up having to self-teach most of the content as the lectures were taught in a way that was very confusing. It was hard to ask questions, I never got straight answers. Content on tests was different than what we were taught most of the time. I wouldn't recommend this class as an introduction to Chemistry.
Does not want you to ask questions outside of what she feels is the scope of the class. Students set up a discord so they could ask each other questions to avoid her. She was very quick to tell you in an introductory chemistry class you think incorrectly.
She Can be confusing but she will work hard to get you to understand. Very responsive.
I like Mosser, she posted lots of videos for her online class and hosted office hours almost every day, so if you had any questions or confusion, she was always really willing to help. Her labs are straightforward, lots of homework, quizzes are online so it isn't that bad. Just study and do the work and you should be golden for an A :)
Prof. Mosser was one of the best science teachers I have ever had. Although her class was online, she was very kind and was always helpful when you had questions. Her PPT lectures are followed by videos she has recorded for extra lectures if you need them! Her homework is very helpful, and all exams are multiple choice only. I highly recommend her!
Prof. Mosser is tough on students but in a good way. She makes sure that people understand. She was a little intimidating at first and I can see why people gave her a lower rating. She can be very blunt but she cares about her students and wants them to succeed.
Homework, reading HUGE chapters, test, plus lab each week. The work is 3x what I do in my other 2 classes. I would never take this teacher again. She isn't friendly, doesn't work with you. She thinks everyone is cheating. The course was so intense.
Professor Mosser really cares about her students. We have optional office hours 2 days a week but she is accessible during the whole week. Although her class is hard, her lectures are very helpful and she is great at answering any questions.
I loved Mosser! Currently taking the Chem series with her during the pandemic and she is a great prof! The course is fully online right now with no Zoom meetings. But the recorded lectures still help! Not a hard course at all as long as you do all the hw, read the textbook, ask questions and do ALL the labs. She is accessible to students!
Even though I listened to her lectures, did all the homework assignments, and even attempted practice questions in the textbook, it still wasn't enough for her tests. There were questions that were never covered. No study guide or practice tests were given, only chapter summaries. Prepare for lots of self teaching and trying to have 1 page of notes
I was very hesitant to keep going on with the course during mid quarter because her exams and teaching just didnt connect. She was the only one offering this class so I took her, but wish I didnt. Dont recommend her for this course.
This class was very hard. The instructor was very strict and did not accept any excuses. I don't recommend this instructor. But the only good thing is that this instructor gives only 3 assignment every week (homework, a lab, and a quiz).
Valerie Mosser was by far one of the best instructors I have had during my two years at EvCC. I recommend taking her class with the Zoom lectures, as she is a rare example of an instructor who will work out problems on a whiteboard. If you ask quality questions, pay attention to the video lecture, and can handle dry humor, you will do just fine!
Valerie is a good teacher. She has a very well structured class. If you actually watch her lecture videos/ read the text book/ look at the powerpoint slides, and turn things on time then you won’t have any problem in this class. She has zoom calls just for you to ask her questions which is very helpful. She is a bit of a tough grader though.
Cons: Exams are very hard, not very good at giving feedback, she has an attitude, she reads slides word for word in lecture videos, quizzes every week Pros: Exams and quizzes are mostly multiple choice, has zoom meeting just for questions
This is the worst instructor I have ever had. She treats treats the students very poorly, doesn't have respect for them, ridicules then when they don't understand, calls their questions stupid, almost brings people to tears. Tests are nothing like the quizzes or homework. You will be traumatized.
Dr. Mosser is passionate of her work, clear about expectations, respectful to all, cares for all & extremely supportive. I am beyond honored to have taken her class. Give your best as you would for your career. Communicate your struggles so she can help you. The material is easy to understand. Listen, read, do problems & practice. I recommend 100%!
Professor Mosser is no doubt a great chem teacher and I learned a TON in this class because you will fail if you don't spend every day doing chem for hours. Take this class if you love chem and want to learn more but if you just need the credit and a good grade choose another professor. Also, take advantage of the extra credit she gives out.
She made many mistakes during lectures and continued on teaching without giving time to correct herself and make sure we understood. she acted as if we naturally would understand her. im going to take this class at a different college. her lectures are not great because she assumes we already know everything, she makes it complicated than it should
I took OChem with Valerie and loved it! She makes it easy to go along with the lecture by having slideshows templates to print in canvas with space for notes. Also her quizzes are online and exams are all multiple choice! Many of her reviews say studying for exams is hard, but she makes it clear in lecture what will be in exams and what will not
Very disorganized, not tech savvy, overwhelming number of canvas notifications almost daily. Canvas modules do not align with quizzes, issues accessing links consistently, instructor makes her own calender and uploads with constant changes, very condescending. Be prepared to self teach using YouTube. Do not recommend.
This professor has been the worst one I have ever had at EVCC. The worst part is her attitude. She utterly belittles students and will call them out, and has even made one student cry from this behavior. Her teachings are very lecture heavy and not very beneficial for the learning of most students. Wish I never took her class.
I did good in this class only because I had good classmates to help, and I watched YouTube videos for everything. I had to teach myself. She made me feel like I couldn't ask questions. Super condescending and told me "You're just ignoring the steps because you don't want to learn" when I asked for help. Made me cry in class. Take with someone else.
This teacher cares a lot about how well the students are receiving the information. Comes off as abrasive, but is just very blunt. Is always willing to explain how a problem works. Knows her limitations as an istructor and isn't afraid to recommend other support structures to ensure success. Chemistry is just a hard subject.
Valerie is nice but not a good teacher. She made me feel stupid often. She would assume that we didnt know what we were doing and say things like "I know what you guys are feeling/thinking" when nobody said anything. She broke down crying when asked a ? and was petty after. Other students were struggling and wanted to change teachers after 1st week
Very petty, doesn't get classes attention before starting class, doesn't give feedback on how you get answers wrong, makes you feel stupid when asking questions, she is very sensitive and gets her feelings hurt easily, is nice but should not be a professor. If she taught better the class would be easy.
Chem121 is a hard class, which makes students dislike the professor. She is clear and direct, which makes some people think she is mean. She gives fair tests, listens to students, and wants them to succeed. Each week has one HW (approximately 20 q's) and one quiz. Three exams and a final. Final exam is all multiple choice questions. LOVED HER!
She was super frustrating to have. She would say one thing but then switch it up the next class. She would get angry with us for not talking but also get very passive aggressive. It was hard to follow along and her slide shows didn't make much sense. She didn't give any follow up information after getting things wrong.
Decent professor, her lectures are a bit boring so it was hard to focus. I suggest taking notes for the weekly quizzes since they can be difficult if you don't understand the material. She has weekly HW and pre-lab assignments. You'll always get 100 on the HW as long as you complete everything. The exams, quizzes, and labs are graded on correctness
Mosser is the absolute best. I only got to see her once a week since it was hybrid, but she was amazing. Very kind, cares about her students, asks our opinions on decisions that involve us and advocated for us. Very funny and whimsical. Understood that there's more to college success than "just take better notes" and that kind of thing. 10/10
Her attitude was a bit rude to me at the beginning, but as the quarter when on I realized she just has a ton of patience and is super snarky. But I mean that in a good way, she will seem annoyed but she almost never actually cares and is just a bit dramatic, but she makes it hard to tell. She really does want to help and is super fun to talk to.
Good professor. Lectures were helpful and she answered questions. She puts lots of resources in Canvas so attendance isn't super required. Drops lowest grade in a lot of categories. Only thing to keep in mind is you need 950/1000 points for an A but she offers extra credit. Get Bs on exams and you'll be fine.
Valerie is a great chemistry professor who helps students develop chemistry practices. She gives decent lectures but expects students to know the material already. Homework, quizzes, and labs make it easy to earn a higher grade. There were no notes for exams, but they were a 5/10 difficulty.
Dr. Valerie is a great professor. She is very gracious with her grading, sig fig errors are .1 of a point and gives partial credit for questions you try. She recognizes that sometimes she rambles on about the chapter and doesn't stop for questions unless you interrupt her. (Which she is ok with) She's good at what she does. Take her!
Valerie is a very considerate professor. She has improved since her older ratings. There are extra credit options. She allows interruptions for questions about the lecture without raising hands and never yells to get the class' attention. Most important: the grading system is based on the points table in her syllabus, not percent! Keep up :)
idk why the ratings are kinda low? this was the first class I had where doing projects wasn't stressful since she broke them into smaller parts. you would usually have more than enough time to finish everything. grading is fair, u get to drop ur lowest lab. exams were fine too as long as u were relatively keeping up. overall it was good.
This class wasn't too hard, but she doesn't teach. Posts lectures but doesn't explain steps.Theres Zoom help meetings every week, but prepare practice problems or else she will go through the lecture slides Assignments =lectures (3-9) homework assignments, and quiz. Exams are confusing, but she uses some same questions from the homework and quiz.
She was amazing, she went over things we didn't understand and curved a test that everyone did really bad on. I would highly recomend.
This professor was single-handedly the most disrespectful teacher I've ever had. She berated me in front of the class, and when I defended myself (reasonably so) she escalated the conflict to an embarrassing degree. She bombarded canvas constantly, was profoundly disorganized, and very evidently disliked her job. I cannot stress this enough, AVOID.
AVOID THIS TEACHER!! Does no teaching. Not forgiving. Wouldn't take her again on pain of death. Doesn't teach, hardly cares for her job, was demeaning, consistently argued with students, berated a student over a minor issue, very unprofessional, tests on things she didn't teach. AVOID!
Valerie is a good teacher. You will have to figure a lot of things out on your own. These are not contradictory statements. Pay attention and ask questions. Tutors are available at EvCC for things you don't understand.
Not sure why her rating is low—she's honestly amazing. I got an A because I actually studied and did the work. People who rated her low likely turned stuff in late or didn't try, leading to the lower scores, so they might be annoyed. She even curves if the exam is hard. I loved her class and definitely plan to take her for chem 131 next!
Liked the layout of canvas, she provides all tools you need to succeed in online class plus free textbook. Extra credit was provided, keep up with weekly schedule and lectures, plan ahead for labs and quizzes and you'll be just fine. She uses a point system which is really nice, I'd take a class with her again!
confusing lectures, unclear explanations. 3 exams + final, all curved by 10 pts. does extra credit. txtbook is only for practice problems, DO THEM!!! easy labs and hw, but study hard for exams, she will ask for little details and things she never taught :(
her class is def something, her hw is low stakes, 4 exams, dropest lowest lab, quiz & hw. Her lecture were not helpful in my opinion; alot of self teaching. She made a lot of mistakes this quarter, so double check labs and exams; bc some of her exam answers were incorrect along w HW and lab.
I took Chem 163, but it wasn't an option here, though. She constantly had her answer keys incorrect, so you would get points off even if your answer was right. Weekly quizzes and 3 tests, a lot of material on them that we never covered. Very condescending and disorganized. Test 2 was literally less than a week before test 3 (the final). WORST EVER.
if you value your mental health just don't take her
chemistry is a hard class but she did a great job teaching despite what some reviews say. she was very lenient when people didn't understand things easily :)
Don't be fooled by the reviews, as a professor she is good. There are a lot more of concepts than math problems but to be honest its guaranteed if you pay attention in lecture, decent at algebra and do the homework you will do good no doubt. People rate her low because as a person she is well EHH. Just note she doesn't respond well to feedback.
This class was just plain scary. The first two chapters she doesn't teach you at all as you should “already know the stuff from before” and she's picky when grading lab stuff. Your grade heavily depends on how you do on the exams which can be pretty difficult as you have to read the textbook a LOT and have quite a bit of prior knowledge from before
pretty chill, you won't have a hard time if you just keep up with the weekly lectures/ powerpoint, and the homework is very easy you just have to complete it on time to get 100%. the grading system is based on a total of 1005 points, and the final exam is worth 120 points, and you do get a weekly quiz, lab (fairly simple/detailed), and HW(easy).
the final exam is multiple choice, but no notes are allowed. other than that all the assignments you can use your notes, my course was online so i did have to pay an additional $50 for the homework access. really easy beginners intro class that teaches you from scratch.
Professor Mosser is extremely funny and has a lot of personality. Everything you need to know for the exams and homework are on her online lectures, but she never lectures in class and it is basically an office hours. I would 1000% take her class again as I found her extremely straightforward and hilarious, she was very clear w/ grading + syllabus
