I enjoy her class because it's not that hard. As long as you understand the basics of what happens in the demand and supply curve, everything is basically the same. Everything as in the topics in the class. Curved, pop-quizzes on the readings.
Very nice professor. Class is not hard and quite interesting. Some readings are not that theoretical. She is funny and tells a joke in the middle of every class. Great professor
Honestly, she's the hottest professor I had at UCSD. I could barely concentrate on the material because I was mesmerized by her.
Class is not that hard. 3-4 pop quizzes a quarter and the quizzes are easy if you do the reading. The reading material from the book can be interesting but reading from the soft reserves are not. Do the reading, do and study the problem sets (not due) and go to review session and you'll do fine.
She was clear and explains everything on the board.
Tests were very fair. Reading was necessary.
Class was easy compared to most upper div econ. Popquizzes based on reading, review sessions before all exams, and helpful TAs made the class pretty manageable. Lectures were kinda slow-paced, but thats fine by me.
She is a really nice professor. I highly recommend taking her for Econ. She told a joke in the middle of almost every class. She explained the material very well and made sure we understood it. Tests were fairly easy. They were very representative of her lecture notes, homework, and reading. She was very friendly and helpful in office hours too.
she's pretty easy on the midterms, but the final was more difficult. but she is still reasonable and gives a pretty good curve on final exam...expect to study even if the midterms are easy b/c it's based on class average when she curves.
Very clear, seems like she cares about the students, TAs were very approachable & helpful. Readings were short & interesting, pop quizzes super easy, midterms representative of material, final long and cumulative but fairly easy if you studied. Good curve.
She makes the class much more difficult than it should be. Seems to be more concerned with her own research than her students learning the material.
I did not like the way she presented the material. She made it seem like everything was clear and straightforward and then all of a sudden her tests were very confusing. She does have a nice curve but I really didn't feel like I learned very much from the class. She did miss class because of her research. Nice lady, but hard tests.
Extremely knowledgeable. She's very intelligent, very clear, very helpful, and very cool. She stops class to tell jokes, welcomes students to grab coffee with her and head back to her office to answer questions, and doesn't think a question is too stupid. If she taught every other econ class, econ would be an impacted major.
she's very helpful in office hours, and her lectures aren't too bad. there are pop quizzes but she warns of the possibility of one ahead of time and the questions are very easy if you do the reading she assigns (which is not much.) curves aren't too helpful, but material is fairly simple.
The class seems insanely easy. I was certain that I aced both midterms and the final, but got D's and F's on them instead. The TA's graded hard, and she wouldn't consider changing the grade. Because the class is so easy, everyone does well, so one screw up and you can't dig yourself out. Lectures are boring. I even went to the EconTutor - no help.
A nice lady. If u wanna get a Bish grade in this class, then u should go to econ tutor for the problem sets ONLY, cuz midterm reviews are absolutly useless since she hates him so much. Make sure u do the problem sets by urself after studying econtutor's notes then u r good to go. There are a bouncha nerdy geeks in the class who killed the curve
The books are easy to understand and the pop quizes are very simple. The problem is the problem sets. Make sure you try to work out the problems on your own before getting help or looking at the answers. Midterm1 tough, Midterm2 easy, Final ok but make sure you study things that were not previously tested. TAs were not a fan of partial credit.
she is a funny professor and will stop to tell jokes in the middle of class to wake everybody up. she is a really kind person and cares a lot for her students, but her office hours aren't very helpful becuase she assumes that you understand all of the concepts already when you come into ask her questions. [
Notation in class can be difficult to follow and teacher is bad about learning student names. She writes very quickly as well. However, teacher likes to answer questions and covers an interesting variety of material.
This class was easy! You don't have to study much for the midterms if you go to class often (she has popquizzes!).
This was a frustrating class because it was all about concepts etc. during lectures but was heavily mathematical and graph based on the midterm/final.
I liked this class because Ramey tied the econ to current issues, which a lot of econ teachers here fail to do. She's somewhat approachable and I think she enjoys what she does-takes it seriously but it's not a boring class to take. The MTs were fair and not too difficult but there were a few tricks to separate the As from the Bs
Her lectures and tests are straightforward. She truly knows what she's lecturing about, as she is the real deal; she's notable enough of an economist to be of correspondence with many renowned economists and is even featured in the textbook (she disagrees with some of the calculation methods in the textbook, though). Weekly homework is also easy.
Great teacher, really knows her stuff. One of the few 8am classes where I didn't fall asleep. Weekly hw and midterms very representative of material. Must go to class because she teaches material that isnt in the book.
I don't know why she is so hot on ratemyprofessors.com. Her notes are pretty much blank and you fill them during the lecture and she teaches stuffs that are not from the book. Since I couldn't wake up for 8 am class, even though I studied really hard with textbook, it didn't help since she teaches stuffs that are not from book. Textbook = useless.
She provides PowerPoint slides for every lecture. During class she annotates the slides with notes (otherwise the slides are pretty useless). MT1 and MT2 are pretty easy; F is a little trickier but the class is curved. Weekly hw on WebCT. She goes over a lot in class but some book reading is required to review material in preparation for the exams.
Clear and concise. She tells you what's going to be on the test for the most part. The test questions have a high range in difficulty though that may be intentional. She's very proud of her noted accomplishments.
This is one of the first classes that I have said, "It is so easy, it's boring". She is a very interesting person that has traveled around the world. Her tests make you think, but they are not ridiculously hard. She is definitely one of the best Econ professors in the department.
Good prof, interesting material. Essentially a sampler course covering social security, Medicare, pollution regulation, etc. with some algebra. Grading consists of two midterms, some easy reading quizzes, and the final exam.
She was a very interesting professor. You really got the impression she knew exactly what she was talking about. It was very helpful that she related the material to current events. I personally never opened the book
She's pretty clear. Her monotone voice makes you fall asleep but if you actually listen, everything comes together. Her tests are off the book so you can't just rely on lecture notes nor just hw. A reasonable professor.
One of the best professors in the Econ department plus at UCSD (she's won some awards at the school). Very clear and effective teaching style, not too much reading, all reading is actually applicable. Pop quizzes every other week or so that are incredibly easy. Highly recommended, wish she taught more classes.
I honestly don't see the hype with this professor. She is the first professor I have had where no one has ever laughed in her class....ever... It is a very boring class. It is relatively easy, just get the free response questions correct because there is barely partial credit on the grading.
Itook Econ 3,130. Do not miss her lecture, study her practice exams, just do your WORK, it is very possible to get an A in her classes! just print out her lecture powerpoint slides and go!
Go to lectures, read the book, do the homework, and you're good :)
Listen. This class is not a walk in the park. Memorize her slide lectures. It's a wealth of information, pay attention to formulas. Keep up with the slides. Attend all lectures. She made her tests difficult this year so the curve was very generous. Her Final was super tricky and her midterms were also tricky. Study. You are good to go.
Lectures are highly informative. Homeworks are simple (online multiple choice). Exams are definitely tricky and you need to study for them. Do the practice exams. Study the lecture notes as well.
go to lectures, some of the material on there test were based off lectures, curve was generous, she's very nice. overall good teacher, tests are straightforward, do the practice exams and homework and you'll be fine.
Ramey is a terrible professor because she makes everything 100 times more complicated than it needs to be, is technologically handicapped, and tries to give you trick questions. Only one thing is certain with Ramey and that is she will piss you off.
Professor Ramey is one of the most wonderful teacher both in and off class. She has a unique point of view on modern economics, and she is always ready to help us understand every corner of economics. I go to her OHs every time and with her help I was able to get an A+ after a famous comeback from a poor 1st midterm.
Not very well-organized.
I really enjoyed Professor Ramey's class. She is a very good lecturer. Econ 3 does have a lot of materials to cover, so naturally the class is a bit difficult. Her tests are very conceptual most of the times. But if you do attend the lectures and ask for her help when necessary, you will do well in class.
She's really smart so she expects you to know a lot of things that you probably don't know since it's an Intro to Econ class. Read the book before to understand what she's referring to, and to catch onto the steps she's skipping. Likes to overcomplicate things. Tests are purposely tricky so she can have a generous curve.
She expects us to know everything. Actually, we not because it is an introduction of eco. Also she makes something one hundred complicated and not easy to understand.
Super smart prof, tries hard to make dull material interesting and relatable. Attend lecture (or podcast) & you'll do ok--but she does cram a lot of info into each lecture. Got a B+ just going and paying attention, and studying for the tests (which are tough but fairly curved). Hardly cracked open the book and averaged a C on the homework.
Honestly, I don't know why her ratings are so high. She is a very knowledgable professor don't get me wrong, but she can't teach. Econ 3 material is pretty easy to understand but she makes it 10 times more complicated than it really is. Her tests are so much harder than her practice exams and things that she goes over in class.
Professor Ramey is sweet! She's always willing to help. I went to her office hours, and she is really really really nice. She likes to read economic news to us, which we can understand with the materials we learnt in class. She once read comics books in class! She's adorable! Her first mid was a little hard, but she gave large curves! Take her!
She is a really great professor and I really like her. She is always helpful so goes to her office hour! she knows a lot and she tries to teach us a lot of macroeconomics knowledge. You can really learn a lot from her. Although her first midterm is tough but she gives us generous curve.
This professor is alright. She definitely knows what she's talking about, but it did not translate properly down to me. The class is supposed to be really easy, but I didn't do so hot. Others did though so maybe it's just me.
Good teacher and makes lectures interesting but the class is a difficult and tests are hard. Don't bother buying the textbook.
One of the worst professors in UCSD. Don't take her.
She's one of the worst econ professors in UCSD. She uses (at least she used when I took her class) podcast, so it's a plus. But she is not helpful at all. Her lectures are super boring and usually you have to learn stuff on your own. Take from another professor and you won't regret
She is a knowledgeable professor that's true, but she can definitely not teach. No matter how hard you prepare for the exam. That's useless. The questions in her exam would make you confused since the question is either unclear or wrong. Her exam is not about testing how much you learn in econ3 , but about fathom what the hell she is talking about
I am taking her ECON3 class currently. She talks about some current events or some irrelevant stuff during her lectures. When she's going over the real important concepts for exams, she teaches them in a rush. Her exams are also miserable since she likes to throw some tricky questions:P TL;DR: I do not recommend her.
Macro itself is not hard but the the way she teaches is super confusing! I thought i understood everything after reading the book but she likes to include super confusing word problems and formulas not in the book! Lectures are boring and she goes through each chapter super fast! I would not recommend taking her again!
talks too much about irrelevant topics, but does not test it, her tests rarely reflect what she teaches in class. Econ 3 is an easy class with easy to understand concepts, however she makes them way more complicated that needed, and breezes over the things she wants to test and during lecture goes over current events, instead of concepts.
Macro econ is not supposed to be hard, but her boring lecture talks about too much irrelevant information which would not cover in the exam. The midterms are okay; however the final is tricky and is not related to the practice exam.
Difficult grader.. she puts confusing questions on the mid terms and finals that trick you, rather than test your understanding of the concepts. Also on the free response questions she is extremely stingy to give partial credit, so if you get them wrong you most likely won't be getting any credit at all
This is the course that I am nearly regretful for taking letter grade. The exams are free-response heavy, and sometimes the grading is harsh. Thankfully the grade is curved. The prof likes news on Econ, but seems not really helpful.
Overall very nice professor. Classes are mostly clear. If you go to lectures, take notes and review the concepts, you should be fine. She does talk about lots of recent econ news in class (which several comments said is irrelevant and boring but I do think it's necessary and good practice). Exams are moderate and she gives GREAT curves.
She's really nice and I don't get the reason why she isn't rated high. Attending lectures really made the exams easy. She is also very professional
Literally gives the worst midterms and finals as none of her tests are indicative of understanding of content. Her midterms and finals are based upon memorization of formulas and real-world events that we were not told we had to know. Her tests feel like an attempt to make her students get a bad grade rather than to test knowledge.
toughhhhhh grader didnt prepare well before classes
Prof Ramey not only taught the macro and its significance, her class also brought in real world events and examples! In my opinion, her tests were all fair (surely if I had gotten a B, I would have given her a bad rating... but she curves her tests if the class average is poor, so it gives everyone a level playing field). She was an amazing prof!
She's an amazing professor. I almost gave-up on econ, but she absolutely made me love the subject again. She actually works for a government department that determines the economic state of the country, which just makes lecture so much more interesting! Take her class if you have the chance!
Her lectures are okay, homework is easy. However, exams are not like the practice exams at all and tend to NOT reflect what was emphasized in class. (Including a question that asked specifics about a news article mentioned in class on a midterm, srsly!?!?) She does curve but the final is worth 50% of your grade. Does not offer extra credit.
She is so knowledgeable that if you go to her office hours more often, you will definitely love how she teaches this class. This is not an easy A class, but she provides you such precious perspectives to really assess the current economy and help you apply the principal knowledge to the real world. You just need to really understand the concepts.
I loved Professor Ramey's class. It definitely wasn't an easy class(which I certainly wasn't expecting). Although I was familiar with most of the material, I came away having learned how to apply in-class-concepts to understand real-world problems. Having economic questions related to the current news helps a lot. Take her if you want to learn.
This is one of the worst professors I've ever had. The lectures and connect homework were not reflective of the tests. The tritoned homework was reflective of the tests, but not the book, lectures, or connect assignments. Tests were graded poorly and explanations of questions were too vague to understand, even during office hours and SI.
Grading criteria on tests were not clear. TA's were not helpful in explaining the concepts and neither was the professor. I went to all of the lectures, did all of the optional work, and spent hours studying for the tests and still almost failed. Was not helpful in explaining concepts after the tests either. Cannot communicate well at all.
Take her class only if you want to learn. She makes relations between in-class-concepts and real-world problems which a lot professors don't do. She explains things well in class. Econ 3 is not an easy class, but you can learn a lot from it.
Best professor ever!
Professor Ramey is awesome. The practice exams represent what youll see on the actual test and she clearly outlines the concepts you need to know. She also applies her teachings to real-world scenarios and historical events. this type of knowledge is invaluable. I guarantee youll walk out of the class with a much better understanding of the world
She's honestly the sweetest professor I know! Always starts her lectures with the latest economic news since it was a macro class, and that makes her lecturers interesting. The course didn't have graded homework at all, so the grading scale was 20% midterm 1, 30% midterm 2, and 50% final. Her exams are half free response and half MC. Great prof!!
Take her if you want boring lectures, hard exams that are nothing of the practice test, and concepts that are not even vaguely related to macro economics.
Very nice, grades heavy which is why I withdrew from class, because I wasn't going to pass. The midterms do not accurately represent practice problems and homework, which suck bc 1st one is 20%, 2nd is 30%, and final is 45%, homework only being 5%. I studied and read the book but test were too hard for me.I did learn from lect but it wasn't on test
This is a very good introductory econ course which I learned a great deal. I liked professor Ramey's teaching style and found that she actually cares about how the students are learning/econ in real life. Exams are a bit hard and grading is strict. But they are true representation of the material and you know how to prepare for them.
Test not representative of material
Professor Ramey is very warm and seems to care a lot about her students, and obviously has a good grasp on the material. Lectures were generally good at keeping students' attention, and provide most of the info needed to succeed. Exams were open notes and proctored via lockdown browser. Invites questions and open to providing real world examples.
You need to do a lot of extracurricular reading to write your homework. All her lessons are based on the entire chapter that you have read. If you dont read, its hard to keep up with what she says in class. The exam is difficult, completely different from the difficulty she taught in class. The grading standard is very high.
Professor Ramey was quite good, especially dealing with a class that can be overwhelming in terms of the breadth of material, particularly toward the end of the course. This class certainly requires effort, but should be intuitively sound given you put in that effort. The inclusion of current events keeps the class engaging and interesting.
You need to have an ipad for her lectures or take notes after class because she goes very fast during lectures. She is an accomplished economist but I wouldn't say she is the best teacher. Sometimes lecture gets a bit confusing. You definitely have to read the textbook (besides lectures) do the homework and go to discussion if you want an A.
Professor Ramey is a very well accomplished economist and genuinely cares for her students, but isn't the best teacher. Class isn't that hard, but concepts are explained in unclear ways, requiring studying outside resources. Lots of regrading, "sorry that was worded in a confusing way," re-explaining, clarifying Q's
Lecture are heavy and long and is hard to maintain concentration, she complicates algebra a lot, but has a good speaker voice. TEST ARE HARD
Class grading was broken down into homework, 2 midterms, and 1 final exam. Homework was worth only 5% and tests were very dense in material. No cheat sheets were allowed for the final and you had to memorize ~10 chapters of content.
Winter 2023. Coursework: 9 MCQ Canvas Quiz Homework (5%), Midterm 1 (20%), Midterm 2 (30%), Finals (45%). This class is very light in coursework; spent about 4-5hrs weekly for lectures + study. Exams are relatively easy and are very reflective of the lecture materials. Genuinely one of the most interesting classes.
