She has no concern for her class- flys through material w/out explaining, BORING
Goes to quickly and isn't really that helpful
Very impatient and does not devote time to explanation. This combination makes
Highly impatient and devotes little time to explanation.
Fun/smart teacher that let's us have classes outside. Her essays are too easy.
very unhelpful
rude, unhelpful, unclear, humiliates students in front of entire class

gives insightful/relevant theoretical examples, interesting/logical lectures
She Is My Advisor. And Is Absolutely Useless.
She could not be any worse, avoid her at all cost!!

She'd be sexier if she had a mullet.
may seem kind of cold, extremelyhelpful, tests are fair and easy
Knows exactly what she's talking about, but is a bit distant.

Rude, unhelpful, and ugly. Yeah, doesnt get much worse.
VERY boring class. Lots of petty detail, she is really anal on tests
class is so easy, do the readings but mostly study her notes and you'll be fine
worst teacher I've ever had. Period.

She's one of the coldest teacher's I've ever had. Very inpersonable and uncomfortable to approach. Her exams were questionable on her grading basis. Try to avoid her classes.
Hands down the coldest, most unfair professor I've ever had...avoid her at all cost!
It's a boring class, but it's statistics. She applies everyday events, and brings in her vast outside knowledge. Also very helpful if you see her in office hours. Not superfriendly, but a good, smart prof.
She's a demanding teacher, but she's exceptionally good and willing to help her students out. She's quite personable, but it's hard initally to penetrate to her core. Overall, a extremely smart teacher who's willing to help IF you seek it out.
worst professor. thinks she knows everything. if you don't have exactly what she's looing you will recieve a very low grade. do not take. avoid her. she needs to get away from jmu and go back to cornell. baaad professor
She's not very personable at first, but if you actually show up to class and put a little effort into it, she's fine. I asked her for an override into her class, and although she didn't want any more students in it, she gave it to me anyways b/c of how mu
i'd rather be taught by satan! stay away!
:( :( :(
a little boring, but learn alot. she is very intelligent and knows the material well...must go to class! tests are essays and will have 2 papers...hard, but you will def. learn....that's why we're here right?!
Tests are hard, papers are murder, DO NOT take this class. She knows her stuff, but is very very difficult.
she seems tough but her classes are interesting, as long as you ask her for help she will give it. ask questions about her study guide before her tests, class is tough but its a good tough.
Class tends to be hard...but put in time and ask her for help. Very receptive and very easy to talk to in office hours. She gets a bad rap but is really good!!!
oh my god! She is cold, hard to approach, and doesnt even make eye contact with you. If you have 1 word wrong on the test she will take points off, NEVER TAKE HER!
she's a really really good professor...knows what she's talking about...and very nice to talk to during office hours. don't let her scare you off the first day. not as bad as everyone thinks
She's very helpful and the lectures are more interesting than most. Important that you go to class (or get the notes) because that's all the info you need for the tests.
Political Parties & Elections was my favorite class!
ok, I enjoy politics but this woman eats, sleeps and breathes politics...encourages students to think for themselves on political matters, rips apart papers, tests are from the notes...I got a B- but really could have done better if I had put in the work needed for the papers.
She hated me before I walked in the door. The only thing I learned in her class was how to live in a constant state of pissed off.
do not take her.. get screwed at end of semsester with ridiculous paper
I took Sulfaro three times. The first time was a huge general PoliSci class and it was decent. I took two other smaller classes with her and she was a FANTASTIC lecturer and always a very fair grader of papers. Tests were a little tougher but I HIGHLY recommend taking her. The classes are fun!
what are these people talking about? she's the fairest professor you will EVER have. you can never argue with a grade because she is so clear on how you can/did/didn't earn it.
Dr.Sulfaro is awesome, come to class, talk to her and do you will be fine. Watch for her papers because she is known as the "paper raper"
Sulfaro ROCKS!! She is hard, but knows her stuff. Go talk to her after class and she is incredibly helpful and nice! No exams, just a HUGE paper (every seminar class has one) in the end. She tells you exactly what u need to pass the class. Don't let her in-class demeanor through u off! It was worth all the hard work.
She knows her stuff. Regardless of what side of the spectrum you are, she appreciates anyone's comments and questions- she is very fair and balanced in the classroom. She is one of the best professors I have ever had at JMU. Don't be intimidated by her, shes a really nice lady and great teacher.
Overall it's a lot of work. If you study you should be fine. But it is a lot of work, however she's always there to help you, answer questions. Better at one on one than in class.

She knows what she is talking about but is very biased and opinionated to the point of not listening to any other side than her own. This is not a good thing when you are teaching politics unless you are trying recruit for a certain party and only agree with that side. Watch out guys, she may hate you before you walk through the door
Sulfaro is awesome. She may come off cold in class, but she's not. Go to office hours, she loves that. I don't know why everyone thinks the tests are hard, she gives a study guide--no surprises. Plus, no real attendance policy enforced= awesome. I skipped constantly and still got an A.
She is the clearest teacher I have ever had at JMU. You will know from the first day exactly what you have to do to get an A. Lectures are way more important than readings. I don't know what those people are talking about with her being biased. I have been trying to figure out her partisanship for a year and I still have no clue.
This lady loves chatting! Seriously go to her office hours and just listen to her gooooo...it's not a bad thing at all because she is really nice. Lectures are overhead and can occasionally be borderline on boring but on an individual level she is very nice and helpful. Tests aren't too bad so I recommend her for this class.

Although she was friendly outside of class, this was the worst class I have ever had in my life. She rambles a lot, doesn't connect with the class at all, and isn't very helpful unless you go way out of your way to ask help. She doesn't even hand out an evaluation sheet so you can express how disappointed you are in the class.
not friendly. ironically she is power hungry. goes really fast in class. writes unclear/unorganized notes on board. all lecture, hardly any discussion. extremely boring at times. NOT helpful in office hours- makes you feel stupid for going in there and asking questions. don't recommend. she has cute clothes though.
HORRIBLE teacher. makes the tests SO MUCH harder than they need to be. NOT helpful at ALL... don't even think about going to her office hours. I'm an A-B student with a D in the class after working really hard. She doesn't curve and gives no breaks. Your whole grade is based on her ridiculous tests. STAY AWAY FROM HER!!!
worst prof. ever. just lectures at you. goes so fast. not organized. notes on board SUCK. if you go into office hours for HELP (cuz you are trying to do well) she smirks at you and tells you to read the book or your notes. DUH! tests are your whole grade. harder than they should be. i'm an A-B student with a low C in her class. DON'T RECOMMEND!!!!!
pretty tough class. her lectures are boring and usually do not provide very useful notes. must read the book if you want to do well on the exams. if you just take notes you will not do very well
I liked her...she is very smart and it is obvious she loves politics. She is a fair grader and tries very hard to be impartial. If you take her class, you will learn a lot from her.
I'm talking her in the summer, easy as hell. Seriously people, go to class, pay just enough attention to note what she's writing on the board and read the book. Nothing could be easier. 2 tests and 1 newspaper project. I'm a stoner and I'm getting an A, minimal work/studying. You shouldn't need to talk to her, material is from board and book!
Look she isn't as bad as people say. Do the study guide and get an A on the tests. Its easier than high school government if you do that. The text isn't hard to read either, in fact its a real easy read.
Very knowledgable, very impartial, very unclear. Notes on the board are pretty damn bad. You have to know a LOT about current events and policies to even keep up with conversations in class
Class is strictly lecture, and she can be really dull and lackluster. Pay attention to her lectures because those question tended to be the ones I got wrong on the tests. Test questions are about an even mix of textbook material and her lectures. The Monday meetings are incredibly annoying.
lectures for entire period. talks way too fast, talks way too quiet for a large class, rambles, gives obnoxious study guides for tests. quizzes on monday night movies are ridiculous- questions asked are irrelivant to the topic. the book is terrible, it contradicts it self. for a gened, its a very stressful class.
If you have no government backround do not take this class. Her tests are pretty hard but scales all of them. It sucks going to movie nights on Mondays;take notes because her quizzes are hard. 4 tests, movie hw is easy. Expensive book and they don't buy it back. Seems to think all students are stupid and comes across as a harsh person.
Class is interesting, but professor is NOT nice at all. She is very snobby and unwilling to help out. She jumps to conclusions and already believes you are lying before you open your mouth. Don't go to her for any kind of help, she's always in a bad mood.I wish someone else would teach this class because everyone should take it, BUT NOT FROM HER!
Has something to prove to everyone. Not helpful at all. So cold and cutting that it's easy to overlook her intelligence. Downright rude at times. Brilliant but unrespectable.
Sulfaro is NOT as difficult as people make her out to be. Reserach Methods is pretty clear cut, and she is very, very good at explaining the concepts. Her exams are straight forward, and she is lenient with her grading. Attendance is mandatory, but more than willing to excuse you if you talk to her beforehand. VERY HELPFUL, VERY SMART.
sulfaro is mean. she is super smart but way too opinionated. the class was sort of interesting because it was during the obama/mccain race so we watched a lot of current events stuff, but i think it would be awful otherwise. her tests aren't that bad and the papers are pretty easy. even still i would avoid her if you could!
Dr Sulfaro is a really knowledgeable person in her field. She is an absolute expert in politics and is very, very smart- too smart. Her class was rough. Tests are harder than they shoulde be. She can be very moody and unwilling to hellp out at times, but on other times she loves too. Getting an A from Sulfaro is almost impossible. Tricky.
If you don't like Sulfaro, it is because you don't like politics and should not be taking upper level political science courses. Professor Sulfaro is the best teacher I have ever had at JMU. I have learned so much from her, and have taken 4 of her calsses and am taking her Sen. Sem. Take notes, go to class, ask questions, and stay current in news!
Sulfaro is fascinating, engaging, and incredibly intelligent. Her classes are very lecture-based, but she does incorporate discussions to liven things up. If you take good notes and study, then it shouldn't be too hard to get a B. I got a solid A, and I feel I earned it. If you like posc, take her! You won't regret it.
This class, in my opinion, is not worth taking. If you've been politically conscious for a year and have some shred of common sense you already know 2/3 of everything discussed. Lectures are boring and useless, the tests are whatever, and the papers have arbitrary standards. If you have the chance to take a different class or professor, take it.
Very brilliant woman and I'm sure she's great at her prefession, but she is not a good at all teacher. Does not convey her knowledge in a coherent, clear or organized manner. She seems to have gotten better about helping students in need than previous reviews though. Still avoid at all costs.
She knows her stuff. You can't deny that. I can deny her being a teacher though. I didn't learn much of anything in the class because what she wants is you to regurgitate her words back at her. My grade was so low because I got all the actual math right but she didn't like my reasoning or writing. Take this with another teacher.
Sulfaro obviously knows a lot and she can lecture for 75 mins straight without looking at any notes. Not as hard of a teacher as I thought she would be-- if you keep up with current events, have a genuine interest in politics, and want to learn, take this class with her. She is very knowledgeable and challenges you, but it's nothing impossible.
Never used the text book. She's very clear and straight forward with what she wants you to learn in her class. It's very easy if you attend class, take good notes, and do the lab assignments. There was almost no HW. The research paper at the end is a pain but she is very helpful if you have questions.
Professor Sulfaro is rrally smart but comes across as condesending and snarky. Two massive research papers that if she likes you, youll do fine, but if she doesnt she will tear it apart. class could get boring sometimes, it was just a repeat of the news. Got a B+, but id take different class if possible!
Sulfaro's lectures drag on and are not very engaging. She is a really hard grader and is very nit-picky in what she is looking for in essays and test answers.
You can tell she knows what she is doing. However, if you dont have to take her, dont. Seriously dont. If you do one thing she doesnt like during the entire semester she will rip your papers apart. Really difficult grader and makes an interesting topic dry.
Knows a lot, but arrogant, rude, and just plain mean when grading anything. Avoid if possible.
Dr. Sulfaro is a great professor. Her papers are very manageable, and she gives you so many resources. Do not avoid her, she will help you exponentially.
Dr. Sulfaro is the most intelligent professor I have had at JMU. Her knowledge of politics is unmatched, and her insights are interesting. Go to her office hours, and she'll make you a better writer and a more analytical person. Cares deeply about how her students perform.
She is an exceptionally smart woman. However, taking a class with her is one of my biggest regrets in college, no other professor has made me cry behind a building after a class before. Avoid her at all costs. Do not take if sensitive to criticism.
Extremely intelligent, and actually pretty funny. She isn't moody, and is always willing to help. She has very high expectations, but, this is college, and a very hard course no matter which professor. Her outfits are sooo funny as well, I recommend if you'd like to take something out of this class.
Second class I've had with Sulfaro. Her reputation is chiefly dominated by her difficulty, which isn't entirely far off. Excellent professor, but she's very detail oriented and certainly makes you work for your grade. Pay attention and complete your assignments properly and you'll be fine -- don't write her off because she's tough.
Worst professor I ever had. If a paper was turnes in one minute past the due date, she would fail you. So if you were not close by and had to turn something in right after the prior class, you were screwed. I have a Master's now, have had 22 years of education, and she was the second worst teacher I ever had. Sorry.
I had Sulfaro for research methods 295 and this is literally the hardest class I have ever taken in political science. The tests are hard, NO MULTIPLE CHOICE, you have to do short answer for vocab words which she lists of 20-30 and puts around 7 on the actual exam. Huge minimum 12 page paper due at end. She's very smart but not a good teacher.
Sulfaro is by far the most passionate and brilliant teacher I have found at JMU. Her class is hard, but if you take time to study and understand the topic, tests are pretty easy. The end of term paper is long but the whole course leads up to it. She's extremely caring and willing to help at any time, TAKE HER if you want to learn!
Dr. Sulfaro is the best! I loved this class, even though it was tough. She is incredibly smart and helpful. If you go to office hours, she will help you SO MUCH. Once she stayed until after so she could help me. She is by far one of my favorite professors. I loved talking about politics with her! There are just 3 noncumulative tests and one paper
One of the best Posc professors I've had at JMU. Willing to help (though I didn't go to a single office hour), tough grader, yes, but gives you so much incredible feedback that you feel like you're the only student. If you want to learn something, take the class and do the work. Pretty funny too, her outfits are amazing
Look, she is tough. She is extremely intelligent, has high expectations, and absolutely expects you to show an effort by working for your grade. If you didn't like her, it's probably because you weren't willing to put in the work. She has been a mentor to me for the past few years, and I admire her tough expectations.
Her tests short answer, no multiple choice but if do the study guides and study them you are set. If you take notes during class completing the study guides is easy. You really just have to be attentive in class. She is super helpful, but can be intimidating at first because she is so smart. Has high expectations but gives you tools to get there
Sulfaro is a chill professor. She's pretty brilliant and definitely knows what she's talking about. And she's pretty funny and nice. The lectures stretched on most classes and the final research project was hell, but if you went to class and studied, the tests weren't too bad, and those make up most of the grade.
This class is graded on papers and writing, including your midterm and final. Midterm and final questions are given beforehand, two are randomly selected the day of to answer. Be in class, study, get your papers in on time. She is willing to advise you on your papers if you ask. Very nice lady. If you do poorly, you didn't put in effort.
Professore Sulfaro is the most knowledgable teacher I've had at JMU. This class is very interesting and with a lot of material. Her lectures are quite boring, as you usually takes notes. 2 tests and 2 papers. Each paper 10 pages and not too difficult and she gives test questions in advance. She's very nice and helpful in office hours. I recommend!
There is a textbook, but her lectures are so in-depth that it is unnecessary to purchase. Lectures are dry, but she writes on the board while she talks, so it's easy to keep up. Two 8 papers and two essay-based tests. Took class during pres. election year, that was really cool and helped me to become a more informed voter.
Under no circumstances should you ever take her capstone. Ever. No matter how much you participate and do her busy work, literally everything comes down the your final paper. And I mean everything. As in, 100% of your grade. Screw it up? No notice, no feedback. You just fail. F. Zero. Zilch. Run, don't walk, away from any class of hers.
Dr Sulfaro is very intelligent but her class is way too much, she grades really hard on papers, never uses canvas, and the tests are really long and hard.
Wonderful teacher, really smart and interesting. Take her!
My favorite professor, know everything about politics. Likes talking to students about politics, go to her office hours, you will learn a lot.
If you want to learn about American government, Professor Sulfaro is a great choice. she knows it all, and knows how to teach. I have the class now and she is my favorite prof. this semester, best political science prof. so far.
If you are a political science major, take every class Sulfaro teaches. She is the best. For anyone who likes politics, there is no one better than her.
She's super sweet and I liked her class a lot. You can tell she knows what she's talking about. The lectures can be kind of boring but overall theyre not bad. Tests are super fair. And I actually loved the 2 papers you have to write - they're based off of movies and I'm a SMAD student. It's a good GenEd, I'd definitely recommend it.
She's a good lecturer, she doesn't waste any time. She's even better in her office. Go talk to her if you want to learn a lot.
295 is not fun, but Sulfaro is very good. She knows so much, and is always available. It's hard, but she will teach you. And she's nice.
There are very few grades in this class (3 tests and 2 papers) so it's not the easiest A. She does give you study guides for the tests so you have a pretty good idea of what terms will be on it. The fourth credit hour is to watch 6 movies in your free time and you write 2 papers total on them. Very time consuming, but she grades very easy on it.
Clear expectations, covers topics in class, knows a lot about politics, easy to talk to outside of class. Best option for 225.
Don't let her reviews discourage you. The class itself was really easy and not a lot of work outside of the class, 3 tests including the final, and two short, easy papers. Her lectures were kinda dry but she writes on the board so you can follow along easily. Not a bad 4 credit class!
Sulfaro knows everything about politics. She will challenge you, but she is not difficult if you pay attention and follow instructions. She wants you to succeed, but if you don't try you will pay for it. Go to her office hours, she's super nice.
Smart and nice, cares about her students. Some think she is a hard grader, but not if you pay attention and listen to her directions.
Great class! She is so knowledgeable and nice. Recommend!
Professor Sulfaro is very informative and actually cares about educating her students. Assignments are straightforward and tests are fair. Really tries to help you out. Simplifies everything as best as possible. One last thing like to say, she is very knowledgeable and well-respected and is one of my favorite professors this semester.
If you want to Fail then take her. She is extremely hard grader no matter how good or straight A student you are but at the end of semester you will get "F" grade. 100% guarantee.
Hardest polysci class, but she is good. Go to her office, get to know her, she is hard but helpful
Professor Sulfaro knows everything about politics. She is smart and nice, and wants you to learn.
If you are serious about your major, take Dr. Sulfaro. She knows it all and cares about her students. She is a good teacher, recommend!
Writes the notes on the board, hard to follow and don't make sense when trying to study for an exam. Doesn't have dates on syllabus, had no clue when readings were due. Exam reviews are long, do those in advance if they are given. Its basically a teach yourself class.
Sulfaro is a very nice lady, her lectures are a little boring but she's cool. Her tests are very fair and she gives you a study guide with all the info that will be on the test.
She is such a helpful and understanding woman! The content of her class can be interesting depending on your personal interests, but she does her best to make the content clear and easy to understand. She's so sweet and really went out of her way to help me after I experienced a traumatic event. TAKE IF YOU CAN (and go talk to her, she's awesome)!
Nice lady and very caring for her students. She's helpful during office hours! But lectures don't follow anything on the SUPER LONG study guides. You end up googling most of the content and sometimes it doesn't match up with the exam. Film paper saves your grade. Also, she has her own grading system so you don't know your grade most of the semester
Very knowledgeable on the subject matter, but a VERY slow grader. She works on her own grading system so for most of the semester you will only have 2/10 grades in. The study guides she prepares are very lengthy and so not like up with her lectures. All around not a bad class. Attendance not mandatory, but you will miss a lot of content.
Honestly she is just the worst. Takes forever to grade anything, lectures aren't pertinent and are just really boring. Worst class I have ever taken at JMU.
Professor Sulfaro is one of the nicest people I have ever met, however it does not make up for her abilities as a professor. I worked extremely hard in this class and I would say I am a good student and it was a MIRACLE I got a B in the class. Her lectures are so boring and there are not many grades in the class. Take a different professor.
My favorite polysci professor, take her!
No attendance policy, but her exams (which are in 2 random previewed prompt essay format) are completely based on lecture (nothing from readings). She gives you the possible prompts that could be chosen for the exam, so its easy to prepare. Grades are 2 exams (midterm and final) and 2 large (8-10 pgs) papers. I suggest having her review your papers
Worst teacher I've had at JMU so far. Super uptight about a gen ed, has strict rules on her syllabus, test is 75% of your grade, boring lectures, only handwrites few words/notes so you have to pay attention in class, and it took her 6 days to reply to an email. also doesn't let you see your overall grade on canvas. AVOID HER AT ALL COST.
This has been one of the hardest gen-ed classes I've taken at JMU. With everything being online, she has not been providing an adequate work schedule to understand what is going on in class. She does not respond to emails in a timely manner and does not put grades in the gradebook when expected. Definitely a high maintenance class!
Sulfaro is a nice lady who knows her stuff. Her lectures are pretty boring though and her online class did not have very good structure to it. If you look at her study guides and fill out info on them, you should do well on the tests. Film assignments were stupid and I had to spend money to see the movies. I would try to take someone easier.
Dr. Sulfaro is a very sweet lady, but this is one of the hardest Gen Eds I have taken. There are very few assignments, and i mean very few. We took bi-weekly mini exams which all add up to be your final exam grade, so if you don't do well on those, you're basically screwed. Even with the few assignments we had, she takes forever to grade them.
As being a freshman this semester and taking her for GenEd, this was easily the hardest class to maneuver. She locked grades so we couldn't see our scores and doesn't grade anything until last minute. I've basically had to teach myself everything. Would not recommend to any incoming student.
I have no idea why her ratings are not very good. I was honestly pretty scared heading into the class, but it was enjoyable and if you put in effort you will get an A. 7 exams every other week, and one big film paper. If you fill out the study guide and read the textbook there is no reason you should not get an A.
Sulfaro was the worst professor I have ever had. She gives exams every other week that are poorly worded. She does not believe in online learning, so she does not do lectures or post any PowerPoints. She posts news readings and articles and our exams are "supposed" to be based off those . You won't know your grade in the class until after finals.
Valerie Sulfaro is very intelligent and very passionate about POSC. However, it's really hard to listen to her lectures. She's not a great public speaker, and it's information heavy. She also had a lot of mic problems. I had her during the pandemic, and she wasn't flexible (refused to host Zoom sessions). She was hard because she wasn't average.
I do not like this professor. Completely unwilling to accommodate students who are struggling with mental health or work overloads. Acts like her class should be your priority and will not offer any extension on anything unless you are literally in the hospital. Graded by four assignments that are extremely difficult, start them weeks in advance.
Has made me cry multiple times. Avoid at all costs if you are not willing to make this class your first priority.
Worst professor at JMU
Cannot read her handwriting, moves too fast and doesn't really seem to care.
She doesn't believe in technology, handwrites notes for an overhead projector and sometimes you can't even read it. She talks really fast for the constant 75 minutes. Exams are fine but ONLY if you attend class, if you don't you miss pages worth of notes. One of the movies she makes you watch is poor in production.
She writes the notes on a plain piece of paper and projects it, which would be fine if her terrible handwriting wouldn't make it so hard to see. She talks fast the entire, so it is very difficult to understand what she is saying. When students tell her that they need help in the class, she is no help whatsoever. She is the worst I have ever had.
She's horrible about answering emails. The entire class is just her talking for 75 minutes and note taking. So if you skip class or don't take notes you're gonna do bad on the exams and the exams are 85% of your grade. She also locks your grades and you can't ever see what your overall grade in the class is. Wouldn't recommend taking her at all.
Professor Sulfaro is a very sweet lady. However, her class is boring and each lecture puts me into a deep hibernation. Her exams/assignments are headache inducing and turned me into a Tylenol User. Most importantly, grades are locked and you have no way to see them. So if you enjoy a little extra math you can calculate them on your own time!!
girlboss. if you get it you get it if you don't you don't if you know you know and if you don't know like i honestly feel bad for you.
If I could give you one piece of advice, it would be to not take this class. She writes her notes on a plain sheet of paper, & her handwriting is difficult to read, & she FLIES through them so I really never get a chance to write anything down. Whenever I email her it'll be at least a week before I hear back. If you're a visual learner, AVOID.
Only positive I have is biweekly exams online, as well as a paper and few assignments so grade isn't just 3 exams. Other than that her notes are chicken scratch on a projector and she thinks class is a race and whips through them. doesn't stop talking long enough to breath, felt like she pushed her opinions on me. not worth the hassle for gen ed
Dr. Sulfaro told us in the beginning of the semester that our exams would be based on the textbook readings and lecture content, but I've been to every class, taken detailed notes, studied the textbook, & completed all the study guides and have still never gotten an A on an exam. I'm a polysci major & love govt but her class isn't enjoyable.
There are bi-weekly exams, so 8 exams throughout the whole semester. Each exam is based off of the four previous classes, so there is not a lot of content to study. She posts nothing on canvas, so you have to go to class. I got COVID at the beginning of the semester and emailed her and she gave me nothing that I missed. So thoughtful.
Prof Sulfaro is a great professor. She is not easy but definitely cares about her students. She is passionate about the topic and a great choice for a professor.
This class is either very easy or very hard. If you show up and write down the notes she gives you in class, she takes all of her test questions directly from said notes and you will have an easy A. The test is open note. If you skip or miss a class, youll have a hard time. She covers lots of material each class. Showing upA.
Very boring and long lectures. Attendance is not mandatory to pass. Grade is based off of 7 different biweekly quizzes and a paper and a few small things. No final tests or midterms.
She has 7 tests that you take at home instead of exams that are 85% of your grade. What she says in class has little to do with it so theres no point in going. More than half the class ever showed up. This is a very easy class so I would recommend taking her
People are dramatic about how "bad" Professor Sulfaro is. Only 7 easy online 10 question exams throughout the semester, no midterm or final. You'll be fine if you take decent notes. Easy grader when it comes to the 1 paper you have to do. She does go by her lectures fast and doesn't post them on canvas so beware of that.
Talks so monotone it's physically impossible to stay awake. Takes boring info and makes it more boring. Has notes on projector but her handwriting is chicken scratch, my friend and I have blank spots in our notes cuz we can't read her writing. Exams are 8 q's so if you get a couple wrong you're screwed. Miss girl can't work the mic. Lord help her.
Terrible gen ed, this class SUCKS! Bi weekly tests online that make up nearly your entire grade (hard, class averages are in the 50-70's.) These tests are timed and are only available for a VERY specific block of time (Thursday 5-11:59 PM.) Also your grade % is hidden, you won't know your grade until the last week or something idk. Good luck
literally the worst class i have ever taken. she is SO boring its torture. and doesnt calculate grades the right way.
Avoid at all costs, pick any other class for this gen ed cluster. I've never been in a worse class at jmu, she posts absolutely no notes or powerpoints online. Tests make up nearly your entire grade and they are not easy at all. Lectures are terrible, they're not engaging whatsoever and are very long. This class will be painful and wreck your gpa.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR NO MATTER WHAT!!!! There are 7 exams that get averaged together for 85% of your grade. You have to watch 3 over two hour films and write a paper on them for barely any points towards your actual grade. The exams have nothing to do with her lecture. You can't read her handwriting and she does not post the material online.
By far the worst professor at JMU. She uses handwritten notes in lectures and you can't even read the handwriting. The notes from class never correlate to the exams. Your grade is dependent on exams and no room to make up for a bad attempt. There is an exam every 2 weeks and they are impossible. The average in her class is a 60%. DO NOT TAKE!
If you cant read chicken scratch this is not the class for you. She uses a projector and my notes are full of blanks bc I cant read what she writes + goes fast so it is hard to even keep up, its not worth it. Exam averages are failing and doesnt care. you cant even see ur grade in the class bc she disables the grade calculation. just avoid this
Tests are very hard. Notes rarely help with tests. In order to even take notes you have to be able to read her bad handwriting. She speaks very quickly and you can only access the notes by going to class. Don't take this class fr
She gives 7 tests per semester outside of class but her class notes aren't helpful. In addition, her notes are all handwritten and she projects on a screen that is incredibly hard to read.
Talks too fast, chicken scratch, and doesn't stop talking about Trump mixing her personal views into class like I don't care this is a gen-ed just talk about Congress, the bi-weekly exams have trick questions where what she said in class or in notes is not the answer, and they are 85% of the final grade that is hidden/muted for no apparent reason.
Please please do not take this class for cluster 5 credit. Her lectures make me fall asleep everytime and even if I do try and listen I can't take notes because she talks too fast and you can't read her notes. There are bi weekly exams that are 85% of your grade. I missed one and am screwed. Completely unfair and ridiculous.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Lectures had so many problems as she constantly wrote notes on a blank printer paper underneath an overhead projector. Not to mention she always used a bold sharpie to write making it impossible to interpret her notes and handwriting. Rough with canvas, impossible 11 question exams with averages of below 50% on two.
I really like Prof Sulfaro, but the class will be difficult if you don't learn from lectures. She talks and goes through notes very quickly, but if you're paying attention, you shouldn't have a problem. Bi-weekly exams that aren't difficult and straight from the notes. You should be okay if you miss class as long as you get the notes from a friend.
Love hate relationship with her. I liked how her class was set up though. 3 pass-fail short answer assignments, 1 essay based on three films, & 7 short exams - no final. Her lectures are incredibly boring & her exams are hard but its not that much work you just have to push through it. I would recommend for patient ppl who can sit through monotone
biweekly exams which would not have been that bad if the questions on them made sense, she would make the questions so much more complicated than they needed to be and those were really our only grades. Her lectures were hard to keep up with since her handwriting was barely legible, and would not compromise with students to fix or help that problem
She talks way to fast to even keep up, her little to no notes are hard to understand because there is no organization to them. Test every two weeks and barely any other assignments so your grade will depend on how you do on the tests, which are literally so hard. I personally felt like she pushed her political side out to the class, biased.
Dr. Sulfaro is a very nice woman and has amazing lectures on current politics. The one thing that sucks is that you are only graded on 4 assignments. But two out of the four assignments are in-person hand written essays, which I do not enjoy. If you come to class and take notes, you will be fine.
She is very biased and dishonest about many topics regarding us politics.
Dr. Sulfaro class is very interesting, but can get boring because she is monotoned, but the content she is teaching is interesting. You are only graded on 4 things, 2 paper, 2 hand written exam questions, but they are not hard. You do need to put in work for the papers, but it is not super hard. If you come to class and take notes you will be fine.
A lot of the negative reviews for Professor Sulfaro are because of her gen-ed course. However, Prof. Sulfaro is a very nice woman who knows A LOT about politics. She is also pretty funny and easy to keep up with in class. Definitely a good amount of reading but nothing overboard for the polisci major. Also no textbook. The papers are interesting
She seems like a very nice teacher, however classes are extremely boring and lectures are very fast and long. She also wrote on a chalk board so it was barely legible. Her tests were very short and lectures didnt cover some of the questions on the test. Tests were hard and majority of your grade. She also takes a while to grade written assignments
Very long and boring lectures. Such a tough grader for papers and essay exams. I usually always get As on papers and essay exams but for her I would get cs or b-. Make sure you take very good notes and show up to class because there is no textbook.
If you read any review, this is the one to read. To start, she is completely biased in class and it made me - a non partisan student - uncomfortable. Her responses on papers aren't constructive and can attack you if you do not do an essay correctly. Nice in office hours but a complete 180 on emails and grading. Please, take someone else.
This was the most dreadful class I have ever taken. The one good, she is very informed and the topics are extremely straightforward. HOWEVER, she solely lectures all class and when she realizes no one is paying attention she becomes very partisan to 'spur' conversation. She does not care to know her students, and does not seem to enjoy teaching.
Tough class, but using tools like Unstuck AI along with diligent note-taking can help navigate the professor's fast-paced lectures and challenging exams. Textbook not required, but attendance is a must.
I love Dr. Sulfaro! She is a very engaging lecturer and cares about her class. Her syllabus says no technology, but she will let you if you talk to her about it. She absolutely knows her stuff and engages with class discussions. Her outfits are awesome too :)
Prof Sulfaro is nice and is good at explaining tough subjects. Lectures are somewhat boring and writes shorthand on the board instead of slides, sometimes it can be hard to keep up. Exams are 2 essay prompts but if you cover the main topics you will do well. There is 1 12-15 pg paper and 1 5-7 pg paper, both tough topics and she is a HARD GRADER
Super boring, long lectures. Tests are kinda straightforward if you study. She's kind of all over the place during lectures and her teaching style is weird. The canvas page is really confusing and homework is never clear. There's very few grades, but if you ask questions she'll answer. There's honestly not even a point in going to class.
insufferable avoid at all costs
Don't take this course. Daydreaming is illegal. Her handwriting is illegible. She's a nice person, though. But the class is all lecture. I highly do not recommend. Your grade will suffer
If you are not a good test taker do not take this class, otherwise the course is very straightforward, 5 20-35 question tests (the class can request more or less Q), one essay based on three movies. You can skip every lecture and make Quizlets with the study guides and it's and easy B, go to class if you want an A, got xcredit for showing up twice.
Nice but lecture heavy and has horrible writing.
Overall grade is based on five exams and one writing assignment. I would not recommend this class if you're not a good test taker. Concepts are very hard to understand.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME! This class was literally impossible to do well. 1.) Her hand writing sucks and her notes are unorganized 2.) Exams do not match nor make sense 3.) There is one film essay that includes watching 3 movies and she gives a prompt for you to choose but it is too much to remember to have a timed essay
Very knowledgeable, most material is covered in class discussions or in the readings. Graded by a few things so sometimes its tough if you get a flop grade. She's extremely nice and the class isn't too difficult because she posts test questions a week prior. Overall very satisfied
Okay so, I actually enjoyed this class but understand that not many others did. The best way to succeed in this class is to 1. Go to Class and 2. Memorize. The test questions themselves are not hard at all if you went to class and reviewed the study guide. But her answer options can definitely trick you.The options will be very similar.
Lectures can be hard to follow sometimes if you don't pay full attention, her office hours are very helpful so go to them, especially before tests.
