Reads and talks to himself, sets questions only he himself could answer.
Drowns students under stacks of poorly written notes. Lectures robotically without realizing that nobody understands a thing he says. Only succeeded by shutting him out and learning from the textbook.

he sucks so bad at teaching. and his tests really discourage people from thinking that calculus can actually be understandable!!!!
He always talks to the board, and always leaves students saying "what? I gotta check the texbook!" after class. Very unfair tests. (getting slightly better though)
Awful teacher. Might as well teach yourself from the textbook. Very discouraging teacher. Mumbles and talks to the blackboard, notes and examples straight from the textbook. Yells at the class when asking for clarity on lesson. Unfair tests!
MARK MY WORDS...I have better odds of winning the lottery then passing his class. Calculus is not impossible...but he is!!! Don't believe me? Just read the other comments!!!
worst professor i have ever come across...writes unclear notes...tests that cover stuff he ddint even mention in class
No Comments
i'm still wondering how i passed this course...simply because he never explained ANTTHING, he just copied the text book on the board. I COULD HAVE DONE THAT. If i hadn't cheated on the final, i would have failed
he's not a good prof but then again most of the YORK U MATH profs suck...compared to other math profs like RAGUIMOV this guy is actually good, he bell-curves too...tests are not THAT difficult, but goin to the lect is useless...
Not bad, take the class wit lots of crybabies so they complain for hours to make him make the class easier.
Worse prof ever in my 4years at York! Copies the textbook word for word as notes. Class average was 38% after like 20% boost for test1. Take a course with him at your own risk. BTW, he ignores people and never return phone calls either.
The lecture notes ARE from the textbook, word for word. He DOES ignore your emails, phone calls, etc. -- is not very prompt. Hard to get hold off. Not careful about preventing cheating in class. Very lazy. (but he IS better than RAGUIMOV)- talks english
If your strong in calculus, i recommmend you take this class, cuz the rest will fail, and he will bell curve your A*SS above 100%. Dont bother going to class cuz he cant teach but thats a good thing! (others wont doo good = bell cuver)
he was very unclear, his intentions werent bad but I didnt like him much
He made this course MURDER!!!!!!!!! do not take a course with this professor. He is really difficult to understand, and his tests are killer. He tests you on material that is not even taught yet. Do all of your homework...twice...and then pray that you will pass his final exam
OMG GOD HELP ME. If you get stuck with this guy, drop out of york, and go somewhere else.. serious. he'll screw over your math for the rest of university. Or... just major in arts. and save yourself the trouble.
Great teacher!!!!
terrible
I don't want to exaggerate how difficult he is but unless you are a truly gifted math student, don't take 1310 with him. He will say that he will try to make his tests easy but don't believe him. I'm a straight A student and I study as much as I can for his tests but I still fail. Even after he raise the marks up 25%+ the highest mark is just A.
No point in going to lectures as his notes pretty much copy the textbook. I'm sure anyone can find something better to do these 3 hours. Tests are horrible. If he calls these exercises easy, I'm not sure what is hard - he gives the most difficult problems you can (or not) find in the textbook. I like math, but this is ridiculous.
Worse Math Prof I ever had. Everything said here is correct. Only people that should take his class are the gifted students in math. He gives the hardest questions on test, exams. Avoid him at all cost if you don't want to fail. His lectures so useless, thinks we're bunch of idiots trying to copy his notes straight from the text.
Run and don't look back! Comments about the tests being unfair, mumbling to the board, and yelling at the class are very accurate. His idea of teaching is going over the exact same examples in the textbook. Worst Prof I've had so far.
Worst professor i have had in my 3 years in uni. Brudal.
Worst experience I have ever had. Makes me doubt my ability. He doesn't 'teach'. Turns his back to the class, writes on the board for hours. Questions and communication from students not encouraged. No guidance or direction. Avoid this teacher if you can.
pray to god you don't get him
You know when a prof doesn't derive his tests from the textbook when he assigns every single question in the book as homework. I did EVERY question in the homework --- 1 txtbook question ended up on the test -- the rest -- All I can say -- people were crying -- hour test turned into 2 hours -- he tried explaining his questions during the test!
Terrible prof, Avoid at all cost. I dropped his class, because doesn't know how to teach at all; turns his back to the class, writes on the board for hours and without explanations.
The worst prof I've ever had. Barely teaches anything, and you have to do ALL questions assigned because he'll put stuff on tests he hasn't taught but what was in the problems, and even put stuff on the test that we're not GOING to learn. Then he's surprised when people fail and has to give an incredibly high curve (ie: 40/100 marks docked) and peo
you do not understand what he is teaching because he does not know English and he thinks in Russian. I recommend changing to a different professor!Just don't take his course. You lose your money and you get no knowledge and bad marks!
I've cried so hard for not finding this site earlier... First test i failed, thought maybe cause i didnt study much, decided not to give up and try harder, studied like madman for the 2nd test, i studied with someone who was really good in it and knew everything! guess what, i got 25% on that test, ofcourse it was too late to drop... waste of money
He is pretty good at explaining. Does a lot of examples from the book, but explains them pretty well. The tests are kind of hard. I got 95% on the first and 74% on the second. The accent could be difficult to understand, but overall he is pretty good. Do all the questions in the book though, assigned homework is not sufficient.
he just reads the book and confuses the students. However, the tests are so hard and it is difficult to pass those tests based on what he teaches you. Be careful!!
WORST PROF EVER!!! 1) he DOESNT teach you a thing, all he does is stare a his piece of paper and write random words on the board 2) GOODLUCK asking him a question.. all he does is make you look dumb and doesnt really answer it. 3) His tests are VERY hard.. save yourself the trouble of having to repeat calculas and transfer out!
IMHO, HE'S THE WORST PROF IN YORK.His tests are a way harder than what you study in his class.Final grades (still hanging on his door): 1A+, 3A's, several B's, several C's.I think ~2/3 or 3/4 in the class got F,D,and D+.He added 15-20 percent after each test and still most people made only D+.I think he enjoys his power to give bad marks.AWFUL GUY!
This professor was utterly useless. I read some of the reviews prior to selecting the course, but since I needed 2320, I had to take it with him. Tests are way harder than they should be, and makes his students do all the textbook questions, and none show up on the tests. He makes you do pure proofs and hard ones too. Run away, if you get him.
IGNORANT, RIDICULOUS, USELESS. IN A 3 HR LECTURE HE GIVES NO BREAK! WHERE 15 MIN BREAK MIN IS MANDATORY BY YORK. HE WRITES EXACTLY WHAT IS IN THE BOOK. HE DOES NOT EXPLAIN ANYTHING. HE DOES NOT TALK TO ANYONE IN CLASS. NOT OPEN FOR DISCUSSIONS. EXAMS ARE THE HARDEST QUESTIONS EVER. REALLY MESSED UP PROF. HE MUST BE FIRED IMMEDIATELY. I DID NOT LEAR
WORST PROF EVER!!i don't know why he can become a prof????it is same as why i am not a king!!!
Mumbles. Gives breaks two hours into the lecture. Lectures consist of copying the textbook word for word onto the board. Dismisses the class up to 25 minutes late. (10:15pm one time). Diagrams on board are incomprehensible. Doesn't answer emails. Tests are significantly harder than homework questions. The class does poorly. Very disappointing prof.
Avoid
WORST PROF!!! AVOID IF POSSIBLE!! Wasted my money only to have some guy read and copy word for word from the textbook. I'm surprised I even passed his first test. Ridiculously hard tests that don't relate to the textbook work.
this professor is HORRIBLE... he does not TEACH AT ALL. he reads from the text, looks down the whole time, and doesn't even answer questions! ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO EMAIL OR CALL HIM. HE NEVER REPLIES! Big waste of money. AVOID AVOID AVOID
the worst professor you would come by in any university. whould mess up your life for sure.....avoid at any cost...worst test and even worse lectures....ridiculously long and uselessly ridiculous lectures....have no idea why i didnt raed the comments before i took his class....
This prof is legit still. Tests midterm and exam were ripped stright form the textbook (the hardest ones at the end of the chapter). He was more than fair and gave us thwe solutions to the textbook book problems, but their just freaking hard with or without the solutions. Expect a miricle curve =)
he is the worst professor at york. DONT take his class. he doesnt know how to teach (just copies stuff off the book on to the board without explaining properly)and his tests are really really hard. his tests are way harder than the problems in the book. everyone ends up getting awful grades.
Honestly, he is a nice guy and will try to help you out. But he does copy straight from the text, his tests are a death sentence (expect them to run at least 30 - 45 minutes longer), and he tends to over explain simple concepts and makes them overly confusing (and they will never appear on a test).
Absolutely the worst professor ever. Copies straight out of the textbook, literally, word for word. Nothing in the book is on any of the tests. Spent 45 minutes explaining what a number times zero equals zero. Was supposed to cover chapters 1-8 and did 1-4 (sounds great until you need the stuff in chapters 6,7,8 for another course). AVOID.
I see a lot of comments about him being a bad prof because he copies straight out of the textbook.. but that to me is an awesome thing, I don't have to worry about going to class, and I can read the textbook on my own time, when I want. I think he is very nice, and extremely helpful, he always gives me a lot of hints, while I am writing the tests,
I really like this professor. He's very, very nice and extremely helpful. You must attend every class and you absolutely must do the homework questions. It's no different than any other course. I don't understand why students complain about him so much. He's is a really great person and his tests are among the most fair I've ever seen.
He is not that bad as ppl have been writing about him. Yes, he copies straight from the text while teaching and DOES NOT HAVE A WEBSITE of the course. His tests will be lengthy so make sure you write as fast as you can esp for this course BUT he is very helpful and he gave me a lot of hints during tests. :D
he copies everything from the book... talks to the blackboard and not the class. writes so small, can barely read. heavy accent and mumbles. avoid!
This prof really very helpful, Everything is understandable in class, you should attend the class and take all the notes to get good at the tests and exams. You can come at any time if you have any question regarding the course.
Always make mistakes on the lecture, sometimes even cannot answer the questions from us.But he use the textbook a lot, on his lecture, what he's doing is copy the textbook onto the blackboard.
Avoid this guy like the plague. He has got to be the most useless prof teaching summer math courses at york. He adds nothing to the material out of the book. All his examples are word for word copied out of text. Avoids questions and just restates the examples from the book. Don't waste your money. Shame on York
This proff is very helpful during tests and provides a lot of hints.Just attend the classes to know which exercises he skips because he skips alot of excercises. He copies the solved examples from the textbook during his lectures. If you study expect good grades since he rounds off the total from a 100 to a 85(class higest mark) in all his tests.
has an strong accent. appears to be explaining to himself rather than the class. a lot of self studying is required to make it through. midterms were alright but finals sucked. most students kept asking for help and clarification during the final. have to retake the course and i pray i dont get him as a prof again.
he is Good if you are serious
Outside of class and during his office hours he is very helpful and he explains everything well. His tests are easy in difficulty but long in length. To him it is how you measure up in class rather than how you measure up in the course. Very good professor overall.
Long and hard exams. Explains and uses examples straight from the text. His writing is all over the board.
He is alright. His accent is hard to understand and he follows the book very closely, so attendance is not mandatory. His tests are not hard, but they are very long, so you can't finish them. His exam was challenging though, not insane but harder than the tests. He also bellcurves a lot! which is great!
Took him in SU. He has an accent and talks low, didn't use a mic not even once. Copies word for word examples from textbook which was pointless. No course website either, just a sheet of paper. His tests are pretty long but if you know your stuff you should be okay. He also bellcurves A LOT, which is good :) Regardless I recommend him!
Took his class for the summer and hated it! He literally uses the textbook for EVERYTHING as if he doesn't know the material himself. He's very unclear when it comes to explaining the course material and when students ask questions, he gets mad and gives us the "I can't believe you don't know that" face! He bell-curves but it doesn't help much...
Do not take anything with this prof. His classes are extremely simple, he reads from the book. He says "everything is homework", as in every question is fair game but he does nothing to prepare you for his tests. When we had our mid-term everyone in the class was lost, we had no clue what we were supposed to do.
I would not even recommend this professor at all. He is clueless and does not know what he is teaching 99.9% of the time. Only twenty people attended his class and nearly half the class dropped out his class. In other words, DO NO TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HIM. Even if you are desperate, take it with someone else that knows what they are doing.
Attending his lectures are pointless as he only copies the text book to the board and mumbles, how ever be aware that the Tests are extremely difficult and its nothing like the home work.
He constantly mumbles to the blackboard and just regurgitates the textbook. He cant answer any question or explain anything. Worst professor ever, My biggest regret is taking this course.
Not a good experience with this Prof. Gave me the only C on my transcript. Mumbles to himself. Class could be completely lost but he's in his own world copying examples word for word from the book. Doesn't check to see if the class is confused. Doesn't explain concepts clearly. The class is hard enough without a prof like this.
There are 3 tests worth 20% each and a final exam worth 40%. I just wrote his first test and I was pretty satisfied. Most of the questions were similar to the textbook questions. Although it was a little long, it was VERY VERY fair. He doesn't teach well and mumbles a lot but if you're good at self-teaching, take this course with him. :)
Worst professor i have ever seen ,never take this course for S1
Do all the homework and you'll get an A. Most of the questions in the tests were from the homework
CS1019 is a very hard course, never ever take this in S1 with this professor. Prof only wanted to complete his syllabus, didn't really care about you. His first two tests are hard but final is extremely hard.
If you are desperate to take this course then: -do all practice questions in his course syllabus)-memorize all the "Prove smth/ Show smth". All the questions on the test are from the hw(some of them are even numbers!) yes, but it was so hard to memorize all of them! Try your best. I got 50 on both tests and 68 on exam and I got A. He CURVES a lot!
Teach very bad, not clear and test is much harder than his lecture
Horrible. Never studied so hard in my life. class average - 52% going into exam. Great person. Does not want to see people fail. Helps as much as he can. BUT I cannot understand how so much effort does so little. Be prepared to learn from textbook. Do not count on actual learning from professor. He writes on board what is in text. :(
Very bad professor, teach all from the book, his lecture are very boring and exam is much hard than he teach in lecture, he only teach some basic definition in the class that come from book at the second half semester, and his test have more than half material that come outside from his lecture, but he did bell curve
Great name. Horrible proffesor.....
Have him right now for Math 1013. He is sometimes unclear and makes mistakes alot but overall he explains the material satisfactory. If you work hard and do all of the practice questions you should be fine on his tests. There is the occasional hard question but hey its university. he is also a really kind man
He has no course website or moodle or slides - basically he has nothing electronic except for an email. The only thing you get is the lectures in which he basically re-writes the textbook on the board. His accent makes it so much harder to understand an already horrible course. About 3 tests horrible! but he bellcurves. And helps alot during tests.
He is terrible. You wont understand his accent. He writes everything on the board, but its so messy you will get lost. The lectures are a waste of time. He doesnt have a course website, so you have to ask your classmates for important dates . He dared to have a test the day classes resumed for the strike. Hardly anyone knew the test was coming.
He talks at the chalkboard, not to students. Doesn't care if students talk in lecture as he talks to the board and continues with what he is doing. Find out the reason students talk all through lecture is because they are asking help from each other. He never clarifies. No website, lectures written on chalkboard all over the place. No order.
Terrible prof. doesn't use the assigned textbook (he uses totally different ideas). his notes in class are the only thing you'll have (no moodle no website) he mumble to the bored the entire class. gives exercises and never provides any solutions. Horrible course.
Here's one advice that'll save your life: DO NOT TAKE 1090 WITH HIM. - No website. You won't know test date, your grades, course updates, office hours or whatsoever if you miss your class - Doesn't care about students - He will laugh at your questions. You're too stupid for him - No textbook. He'll deduct marks if you use textbook symbols
Always ready to help! Go to classes and follow his notes.
DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING WITH THIS PROF EVER!!! He spends the entire 3 hours scribbling on the blackboard with no explanations whatsoever. And then on the board to it is really hard to follow with everything all over the place. His tests are like thesis from i don't know where. He never heard of technology. Math Logic -- absolutely no logic. :( :( :(
RUN. This guy is a terrible prof. Doesn't teach, just copypastes the textbook on the board. If you ask him any question then he looks puzzled and lost, and never answers your questions. All that could be forgiven if his tests were similar to practice exercises, but they're pulled out of god knows where. I really regret taking the class with him.
I had him for my first semester at York of my first year. His tests are fairly hard so I suggest you practice as many questions as possible. Understand the theories and concepts. He copied text from the textbook and simply rewrote it on the blackboard so don't worry too much about taking notes, simply read from the textbook and hope for the best!
not particularly clear!
One the best prof i've ever had so far. He is a clear guy with a good personality and also a knowledgeable prof. His test are tough but he'll bell curved the grades at the end so don't worry! Attending lectures are not necessary, If you read the book or his notes and do couple of exercises it's not hard to finish the course with an A+.
His exams are fairly easy, but good luck getting them finished in the time allotted. I literally couldn't write fast enough to complete them. The bell curve, however, is truly your friend in his class! Don't bother attending lectures, as you won't understand a word he says. If you want to survive, become a mental speed-arithmetic guru, or fail.
his exams are easy but long, you need to be bolt to finish his test, he has a sense of humor but he's hella confusing, doesnt answer clearly, always looks puzzled!
Get ready to become a self educator. This professor is really smart, probably a genious. However, he has absolutely no teaching skills. The textbook and online lessons will be your best friend.
Mr. Michkine is a nice guy, but he's a terrible professor. He just reads off powerpoint slides, switching to the next slide before you can write anything down. And unlike other professors, he does not post these slides online. Going to class was a waste of time, as I learned very little from the lectures. You'll definitely need the textbook!
He is not the professor teaching the students... he is just worker for money
Talks to the blackboard more than he does to the class.
He talks to the blackboard not students. No course website.
Truly awful
He is a nice guy and a good prof with a great personality, also prepare you for the tests with writing examples on the blackboard patiently. His tests are not easy but with the bell curve it's great in overall. Would recommend.
He uses the chalkboard a lot but gives very helpful examples and explanations to make sure you understand. He gives reasonable tests (not harder than what he teaches) and is a generous marker. Do all the homework/practice and you will do fine. He is very helpful and nice.
The prof himself is very nice and he's a smart guy. When it comes to teaching, he can't teach anything. He pulls questions out of his ass for the midterms. He uses a book written by another prof that has no solution manual, so there is no point in doing the exercises. It's a smart idea to take this class since he bell curves A LOT.
Very kind professor, knows the material well, however, his teaching can often be overwhelming and confusing.
Very kind professor, knows the material well, however, his teaching can often be overwhelming and confusing. Need to follow along every lecture, and doing readings before-hand would be extremely beneficial
Over 60% failure rate. That says something about this guy. Does not know how to teach. Very unhelpful. In private sector if you don't perform you are fired. Probably he gets a bonus from YorkU for not teaching and failing students, so that YorkU gets the repeat fees from students! So York won't fire him.
well, its true, you won't learn much off him, but its math. math is learned through practice anyways. however, he is on your side, which he will show via bell curves . also gives web assign extensions if you write a polite reasonable message.
He is a very good professor, he'll help you when you don't understand something and spend lots of time going through it if you need it. Bell curves like crazy. Just do the practice questions he assigns from the book and you'll be fine
No course website. Has no idea what he's talking, let alone ''teaching." Literally panics anytime someone asks a question. He defines awfulness to the highest possible degree.
HE IS THE GREAT PROF... I DO UNDERSTAND THT HIS NOTES ARE DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND BUT IF YOU GO AND MEET HIM IN OFFICE HE WILL HELP YOU ALOT
He is a bad lecturer, I found it hard to learn from him in lecture. So be prepared to learn through the textbook all by yourself. His tests are difficult but do-able. Expect test questions to be harder than ones in textbook and webassign & do lots of practice. The exam was brutally difficult. I really don't recommend him, take it with a diff prof.
Professor Michkine lectures were not useful for me as he would just read off the powerpoints and sometimes would do a problem on the board with us. He takes the test questions directly from the chapter questions, some of them he assigned as well. He bell curves the average after every test my class had. In all, just do the homework questions.
Valery is an amazing professor, always helps when needed
Here's the deal with michkine. He's as bored as you are during lecture so don't expect much. but this guy is a bro. you can go to him for anything. bumps grades like crazy. tests are rigorous BUT straight out the book/assignments lol. so far in second year he's allowing us cheat sheets double sided and he doesn't care what you put on it! #mich4Prez
+ good person, helps you out if you've been marked harshly - boring lecture - reads off slides word by word. copies examples from book. - lots of webassign problems. sometimes the material hasn't even been taught yet. - tests are too long for 50 min and are marked harshly. If you are good at studying on your own, you can make it. Avoid otherwise
Great guy, amazing personality..... one of the best at York
Just reads off slides and shows examples from the book Good person, laughs for no reason bell curves crazy exams r really hard nd has no connection with the book
He gives you a lot of examples during the lectures so you have a lot for examples to practice from. Also before a test he tells you what to focus on. His notes are amazing its like he is writing a book, very clear and step by step. Overall, amazing Professor!
Dumbest class I've ever taken. He just repeats examples from the textbook in class, and makes ppt slides that are less than useless. Plus, he puts nearly every single thing from the textbook in his tests. No preparation for the tests WHATSOEVER; no comprehensive way to prepare for the tests. AND he never replies to e-mail. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
He cannot teach. If you have no choice but to take a course with him, then get ready to self-teach everything. Skip lectures as they are completely useless, and try learning the material from other resources (slides, textbook). Although the tests are hard, he curves. Overall, take any math courses with someone else, if you can.
Out of every single professor I've ever had at York in the last 3 years, he has to be the worst. He doesn't know how to teach, only knows how to scribble on the chalkboard and speak in a heavy accent. The class average was fail, I should have dropped it while I still had the chance.
The BEST Professor at York. The negative reviews are just people who didn't try hard enough in the course. If you come to the lecture and pay attention to what's being written on the blackboard, you'll understand everything. I'm not a math major but if I were, I would switch to math if he taught all the courses. :)
The course is boring, heavy accent and USELESS, the only thing you need to do is self-study. You don't need to understand everything, the only thing you should make sure is that you are prepared BETTER than your classmates. He curves a lot a lot a lot. Advice: Try to skip his first test of 1019, each term average is about less than 40 percent.
Attending classes is useless, but he tends to bell curve his grades. that's the best part of this professor.
Underrated prof. All my math teachers before him have been subpar, but this man has definitely proven me great math teachers exist. I highly recommend him for any of the math courses, but to be honest, I would enjoy taking anything he's teaching!
His accent is tough. Take notes, review them. He's one of the better Calculus teachers out there so be glad that you can at least understand what he writes and he bell curves grades.
Literally writes exactly what's written on the textbook, so writing notes is pointless. Tests are hard, but he does bell curve. As long as you read the textbook and practice textbook examples you'll be fine.
Michkine literally copies straight from the textbook, and his accent is kind of rough. Likes to repeat things in a louder voice to make it clear. Loves to fill the board only to erase it. Michkine isnt the best teacher, but 1 on 1 hes a much nicer person. He doesnt post stuff on Moodle and his class is a lot of self study. GL
Don't know how anyone can hate this guy. His tests and exams are only hard to freeloaders who don't want to study. If you do textbook and past tests you'll cruise to an A+. They'll give you all the tricks you need. Also, everytime i hit extension request on web assign because i was swamped, he'd grant it. love this guy.
Other than the fact that he covers the board unintentionally, he's a pretty good professor. He goes through a lesson and takes up alot of examples from the textbook in class which then go on his tests. He's good to go get help from after class and his tests are difficult for slackers and people who don't use the textbook!
Thick accent & mumbles, but before tests he sends out an email saying what the test is going to cover, which was super helpful. You need to study hard for this course because it's not easy. BUT he curves a lot which saved almost everyone's marks! (most other profs for 1013 don't curve). PS don't worry if u dont understand what he says in class ;)
Captain Clutch when it comes to the bell curve. Honestly saved a lot of students and is willing to look through tests and give back good feedback.
His tests are like average, theyre pretty hard but doable and you can pass them, he bell curves quite a lot. Im pretty sure i had about a 70ish final grade and he gave me an A. So hes blessed in that sense. But i had to teach most of it to myself cause i couldnt really understand him. But hes definitly not the worst prof ive had
A great professor and human. Cares for you and your success. Best prof to take any MATH course at York! Highly recommended.
Had him for MATH1013 and MATH1014, he isn't the best teacher, but he does pull through with crazy bell curves. overall the BEST choice if you are taking 1013 or 1014. you will need to read the textbook too.
Handwriting is unclear and small, voice is too low. I can't understand his class if i didn't learn by myself.
Unclear with teachings. Test seem to be force fed. More emphasis on taking test than actual learning.
Can barely understand him, nothing uploaded online, he does allow us cheat sheets though.
He is a nice guy BUT his lectures were a complete mess, you can barely understand him when he speaks and he mumbles a lot!! The tests were marked extremely hard and no part marks were given ever! It is worth it to go talk to him if you aren't happy with your grade as he is understanding, but I still l wouldn't take another math course with him !
3 things... gives hard test, he always bellcurves and you have to teach yourself the material.
The notes are super messy, you cannot understand the rest if you replied a message in the class.
He's a nice guy but he doesn't follow the textbook. He walks in mumbles stuff and copies his notes on the board WORD FOR WORD. So stay at home, teach yourself, his notes are on moodle but they are messy. The textbook is useful for practice, he assigns question. He provides an outline for the test. 25%, 20% test 1 and 2 respectively and 55% final.
This guy just mumbles while copying his notes from his notebook onto the board. The grading scheme was over 3 tests and the final and webassign questions. Tests are always 4-5 questions long. We had this one derivative question in a recent test and it was worth 30 marks. On the bright side he bell curves everything, but I would still avoid him.
He is a very thoughtful and knowledgeable professor. He teaches first term Calculus in a rigorous manner and goes through some very interesting proofs of various theorems over and above what is in the book, which I enjoyed. His tests were fair and reflected the covered material. I disagree that his tests were overly difficult - they were fair.
The most messy handwriting Write and erase and write between words Doesn't explain anything just laugh and expect student to know or see what he said or wrote Never seen proof or explanation of any kind When he doesn't know how to explain he just smile and laugh I won't take his class ever again not even when its the last credit i need
No need to go to class, just do all the exercise in textbook and you can pass
The best prof at York for math and for this course there are just 2 main profs George tourlakis and Valery Michkine and out of the two valery is far far better than George Valery give notes he explains well but George is the opposite Trust me I have taken this prof twice and got A+ twice
If you take a course with him be prepared to self-teach the material using the textbook and the internet. He is a nice person outside of class, although he does a poor job at explaining concepts & his tests are difficult. For context, our class average for our first test was 21%. I would avoid taking any courses with this professor.
He's not a very good lecturer, but his lecture notes are absolutely precise and extremely detailed with a mathematical proof for every single concept that he goes over. To really understand his notes, you have to read it 10 times over. Once you do, you're golden. I think forcing myself to adapt to his style of teaching improved my logic/math skills
May not be the best to understand with his accent but that's no issue, he gets the work done, and clears concepts, sometimes vaguely
This prof makes a hard math class to an impossible math class. You cannot understand his notes as they are completely unorganized and not readable. Material for this class is nonexistent anywhere online so almost impossible to teach yourself. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
He is nice and reasonable, but his writing is unclear.
All you really need to do to pass this course is just do the homework. super simple. Professor Valery also tends to bell curve because some people don't do the homework. So even if you put in minimal effort in doing the homework, you will probably will still get bell curved up to at least a pass. super underrated prof in general, kinda the GOAT
Hands down the worst math prof I've had at York. In the words of my friend, "This man teaches almost every course in the department, and none of them well." He copied from the textbook verbatim, even in the lectures, and wrote down word for word from the text. Does anyone think this is teaching? I've never seen someone so talented at doing nothing.
The professor has a terrible teaching style, and his notes were almost unreadable, it was torture to go through them and expect to get any info out of it. He would never give the answers to the exercises in his notes, which made studying way harder since he expected us to solve them with no way of checking our answers. It's about time, he retires.
He is terrible, his test is long and test time is short. He totally expect that you have same knowledge as him. What I know is so many students can not finish the test on time. Lack of scrutiny in the examination room, some students even took out their mobile phones to cheat.
Just run, don't take this prof. Its impossible to learn anything in lecture, very boring and most the time the prof doesn't even know what hes talking about and reads off the slides. You will have to learn the course materials by yourself.
Yo this man takes eons to grade, its 2 days before the exam and we haven't gotten a single mark back since reading week... it's impossible to track your process since he's just a horrible prof.
His lectures make the course content much more confusing, you're better off learning on your own. Tests are too long with not enough time and questions are more difficult compared to other professors. At least he bell-curved the midterm, although the class average was 30%. He's a nice guy, but avoid him if you care even a little bit about your GPA.
He teaches noting
In the wrong profession. Can't teach at all
Do not take him unless you want your life to become more miserable
Genuinely, as much as possible, do NOT take 1019 with this professor. He seems like a nice guy but he can't teach to save his life. You will not learn anything in his class and his tests are marked very unfairly. Discrete math which can be a completely new concept to some first years like me, shouldn't be taught by someone like him!
This prof mumble raps to a wall for 80% of the lecture. Spitting out bars stronger than melatonin. Strongly recommended if you want to spend your tuition to be in a coma.
I swear to god I swear to god this professor is the worst professor in history you will not be able to live happily again because of him tests are hard and he doesn't drop any assignment. If you let a grade 2 explain in class you would understand more from the grade 2 than this professor.
i dont even know what to say
How is he still teaching
He can not teach. He requires a very specific format to answer questions which isnt taught, explained nor mentioned anywhere. He doesnt curve. The class average for the assignments were 20% and the midterm 30. So if you dont want to waste your money, time and energy, DO NOT TAKE HIM
There was one lecture where he started speaking russian so that's when I started taking notes
The materials that he provided isn't enough for his midterms and finals. Expect half of the test time you are actually writing answers that are worth less than 30% of the marks and the rest are something that he did not teach, and expect you to explore on your own. If you study well, most likely you will get 60%. FYI, class avg 41%.
He cant teach. Slides are just screenshots of textbook. You cant understand him. His questions for assignments and exams were abominations. He doesnt curve either. This course is just stressful with him and better to take it with Jeffrey Edmonds, Natasha or Saeed. His mark distribution is terrible 32% midterm 40% final & 4 assignments 28% total
None of his lessons or assignments are made by him, all are from Lyryx. He's monotone and he sounds so condescending whenever he's asking questions. DURING OUR FINAL EXAM HE WOULDN'T STOP TALKING TO ME, I couldn't focus because this man kept coming up to me and trying to "help". If you wanted to help, TEACH YOUR CLASS BETTER.
I taught my self the whole semester. He only know how to read the powerpoint.
Absolutely the worst. I took the course with this prof due to time restraint. Please don't do that. Let's be honest, you WILL fail if you take this prof. Note that for this course, every section is completely different depending on the prof ( even the final test might be different ). And, ofcourse, this prof somehow manages to be the worst.
avoid at all costs
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Lectures are just him reading off slides. Assignments were completely different from the material taught the class average for the midterm was 20% and refused to curve. Weight distribution was horrible for 32% midterm, 40% final, and 4 assignments worth 7% each
I can't believe what I went through this semester in his class. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone who doesn't want to feel miserable. The midterm average was 20%, and he didn't even curve it. He doesn't stick to the textbook's format, which uses Latin and is much simpler. Instead, he uses Greek letters, making everything way harder to understand.
RUN!!!! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! CANT TEACH!!! GIVES VERY DIFFICULT ASSIGNMENTS!!! DOES NOT CURVE!!! He may be a nice guy but he cant teach, help, or grade for the life of him
His lectures are worthless your gonna have to learn everything yourself stay away from this prof!!!
First half of the course the lectures consisted of him reading directly from the slides. During the second half he started doing more example problems with the class. Was helpful whenever approached for questions or concerns, seemed to care about students and results. Doing homework and practice questions posted on the syllabus are a MUST.
Avoid as much as you can and save your life. Better to skip a semester than taking him.
Just DON'T TAKE!
RUN! He turned an easy course into a nightmare. I had an A but my grade dropped after that horrific exam. Midterm averages were 41% & 39% and were impossible to finish. Homework was insanely long & lectures were useless. Self-learners might be able manage but still suggest dropping as I self learned almost everything and my mark still ended up bad.
If you somehow self learn then you can do good. He reads from slides but you cant understand him. He mumbles so much, people have literally fallen asleep in his class. His assessments are extremley difficult, open book asssignments had 20% averages and the midterm was at the 30% mark. Final was an abomination. DOESNT CURVE DESPITE THESE GRADES
Listen to the other reviews, bro is not a good prof. Take this course with others his lectures are useless and this is a very difficult course I self learned basically all of it and he curves hard at the end because so many people fail his course because hes a bad instructor. Would not take him again
This professor doesn't speak clearly and spends 90% of time reading ppt content in his class. His class notes are confusing, and his homework is not only a lot but almost not proportional to the exam questions. The most important thing is Apart from simply giving lectures, he will not provide any learning assistance to students.
Very awful,
Our first open book assignment had a 30% average. You can guess the midterm was much worse. He mumbles through the slides, which is just paragraphs of text and the final was an abomination. This course took more time than needed to understand, and to anwer the questions. AVOID, take it with Natasha or Saeed
His lectures and notes are not relevant to what he puts on exams, exam questions are fully different from what he teaches, focuses on, and what we should do for practice. he curves though. Try to avoid him
He is the worst professor and avoid him at all costs. He speaks in a way in which his lectures are completely incomprehensible and he just reads off the textbook anyways. His tests are absolutely horrible and you must be prepared to read the textbook over and over again to just even barely pass his tests as the class average is around 30%.
Awful professor, problems are everywhere, avoid
Avoid, just run, do what you have to, dont take him. The amount of effort put in just to get this grade was disappointing. The class average is always in 30-40's. He does not curve. He has strange grading criteria which he doesnt share, and you have to figure out on your own. Grade distribution was horrible. He designed it to make you fail
Can't teach, impossible to understand, self learn the whole course, lecture notes are blocks of text. It's like he's doing it on purpose. I'm not sure why he has a salary.
Reads off of powerpoints, better to work yourself on textbooks or online
It's a tough course but it can also be fair if you adequately apply yourself. BUT, other sections/profs def make it significantly easier (what I've heard)
very rude and disrespectful prof, avoid him at all cost, it does not matter if you work hard or not, his exams are designed to fail you, do yourself a favor and do not take his class at all. This is the type of prof that makes you wanna change major, AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Should retire because he does not know how to teach, communicate or anything.
