I was never a strong math student, but with Prof Ma's help and encouragement, I am now quiet proficient in Math. I definitely recommend all students to take a class with Prof Ma.
I took calculus 2 with professor Ma, I must admit, I struggled with it. But with his help and encouragement, I stuck with it. I spent a lot of times in his office and attended many of his study sessions, I passed calculus 2. Yay! What I really appreciate is that I just earned an A in calculus 3. Thank you Prof Ma for your caring and concerns.
Yay! Just took my final exam. I took this class twice, once at Stockton and once at a different college; I could never comprehend this material until now when I took it with Professor Ma. It was tough, but he broke it down to where I could actually understand. Thank you sir! You're the best teacher I have ever had. God bless you!
Thank you Professor Ma for an amazing class; I was never a strong math student. But with your lectures, I was able to understand and slowly gained confidence in my math ability. Thank you also for those inspirational talks. They put things in perspective for me and I am aspired to be like you. I will sign up for your Calculus 1 class in the Fall.
What can I say? You're simply the best teacher I've ever had. I failed this class twice in my previous attempts. I finally understood it! Thank you professor Ma for your patience and numerous hours helping me. Thank you for your constant positive comments and encouragements. I'll continue to try my best to make you proud.
I have taken Ma for 92s and now Math 039 and in both cases he was an exceptional professor. I highly recommend taking him due to his diligence in ensuring his students obtain a proper education. He does this by providing sufficient examples, making sure the class is engaged, and answering questions in an impressionable way.
Professor Ma will go out of his way to help you if you really try to learn. I learned a lot from him and feel more confident now.
He cares for his students. Be sure to try hard and he'll help you. He is great!

This was my third time taking Precalculus. My first two attempts were in high school and never even came close to passing. I took Proferrsor Ma's math39 summer course and finally was able to understand math. He focuses on concepts and really cares for students' success. HIGHLY recommend this professor.
I used this site to get some ideas about my professors, so I thought share this with my fellow students before the registration for the upcoming semester. Prof. Ma is the best! He really cares for his students. He spent hours of his own times to give study sessions. Amazing lectures. I strongly recommend Prof Ma to all students.
Professor Ma is the best teacher I have ever had. He really cares about his students. He used his own times to give many study sessions, which really helped me. He treated students to free pizzas in the study session before the final exam. I have always struggled with math, but I learned a lot this semester. I strongly recommend him.
His heart is in the right place for sure and that is teaching. He cares about you learning the math. The many study sessions throughout the semester really good. He explains math very clearly. I love his teaching style. I am looking forward to taking Calculus 1 with him. Great job Professor Ma!

Professor Ma is super intelligent and yet very easy to talk to. I love the ways he broke down the math concepts to the levels that are understandable for students. I felt very comfortable and at ease in his class because I can see and feel his genuine care and concern for students. He offered many study sessions that helped me tremendously.
I took Professor Ma for Precalculus over the summer and then for Calculus 1 for the fall semester. He is the best teacher I've ever had. He really cares about each student and really wants you to understand and succeed. He wants you to have a full understanding of the material. He also gives study sessions before tests which are extremely helpful.
I love professor Ma! I took this 3 times. I can't get it with my previous 2 professors. My last time with prof Ma was great. He talked to me, encouraged me, went out of his way to help me and that motivated me. I worked really hard and pass with a B. He really cares. This is some I can look up to for life.
When I started with professor Ma in precalculus, I was not a strong math student. I liked the way he taught and learned a lot and took him for calculus 1. Prof Ma just have a way of presenting the math theories that make sense to me. I can hostly say that I am a very strong math student now and it's all because of my dear professor Ma.
Professor Ma is awesome! He knows his stuff and explains things very clearly. Most importantly, he really cares about his students and very willing to help. Study sessions were very helpful. Strongly recommended.
Due to my military summer training schedule, Professor allowed me to take my final exam early. I am essentially done with the class and just waiting for my final exam grade. Prof Ma is the best teacher. Math does not come easily to me, but he was able to help me understand it. It's obvious that cares about his students. He gives study sessions.

Awesome class!!!!!!! Professor Ma is an excellent teacher!!!!
The material is difficult for me, but Professor Ma helped me through it. Great Guy! Great Professor! He is a caring person. Great lectures.
Best teacher, period! Thanks for all your help, Prof Ma!
This is the worst math teacher I've ever had. He was late everyday and made students feel like they were dumb for asking questions.
Professor Ma is great. Gave us many chances to learn the math. He gave many study sessions. Very caring.
I fail this class 2 times with different teachers. I passed it with professor Ma. If you work hard, he will go out of his way to help you. He gave study sessions and for last study session before the finals, he bought pizzas for about 50 students that were in the study session. Who does that? I love his class.
LOVED this class. You're going to view math so differently. STUDY&ASK QUESTIONS. No required hw but do plenty of "suggested exercises" IF YOU WANT TO SUCCEED. Seriously, he's going to test your logic not how well you can memorize. He REALLY knows his stuff&I really appreciated his passion to teach - you hardly ever see both in one math instructor.
I did not like math at all before I first took pre-cal with Prof Ma. I love his teaching, so I continue to take Cal1 and Cal2 with him. He clearly knows his math, but it's his way of breaking down the math topics to my level that inspired me to understand and now actually love math. But it's his love and care for students and math that I admire.
Professor Ma is a very good teacher. He explains very good. He helped me a lot.
I took both Cal1 and Cal2 with Dr. Ma, an amazing teacher. The man knows his math; it's all in his brain - never used lecture note. Very generous with his time to help students. Gave many study sessions during the semester and he bought pizzas for students in the final study session. Very caring gentleman. I love him.
I used to be a terrible math student. I felt like there was no hope until I took Professor Ma's class. He is the most engaged math teacher I have ever seen. If you put in the effort, he will meet you the rest of the way. Do ALL the practice questions and you will be fine. Take the class!
I heard about his teaching and I drive from Stockton to Mountain House just to take his Calculus 2 class. His lecture his amazing and I really connect with his presentation of the material. Most importantly, he really cares for his students' learning and progress. I love the inspirational talks about life and future in general. Thank you Prof Ma!

So, I continued with Prof Ma in Calculus 1 and now I am really enjoying it and learned a lot and did very well. His passion for math is very infectious. He gives study sessions. Nice guy!
I made a D with the previous teacher - just couldn't quite understand the material. This time around, I took it with professor Ma - got it! I've had Ma for pre-calc, cal1, and cal2. He was a wonderful teacher. He always knew what to say when you doubted yourself. Always came through with the inspirational speeches. One thing I liked about him is that he was always there to help. Btw he makes you work hard for your grade. You really have to put the effort in. He's a really good teacher!

This is my third time taking this class. I took it twice in Stockton- did not pass. Now I realized that I am lucky to have taken this class with Professor Ma in the summer. It was difficult for me - the material, the drive to Mtn. House, etc. I almost quit; but prof Ma was very encouraging and helpful. I am glad I stuck with it - I passed.
I thought I knew Calculus from high school; well, after one class meeting with Dr. Ma this summer, I realize I have a lot to learn. His presentations were amazing and engaging, and I have a few of those as prof Ma called it, the "light-bulb" moments. It was so exciting. Great man! Great teacher!
Professor Ma is really an amazing teacher, so caring for his students. This summer, there were a few times I just wanted to give up, went talk to prof Ma, he talked some sense into me, i am very thankful for the conversations and encouragements from Prof Ma. I will remember this for life. Awesome teacher, but even better, awesome man!
Exiting high school, Math was a declining subject for me. The foundation previously built was based on ideas of only memorization and the interest of a letter grade. Professor Ma helped me break down the old foundation and look at Math with a whole new perspective. Math is now back to being my favorite subject, and I look forward to Calculus 1 & 2.
Prof Ma is the best teacher I have ever had. Very clear presentations in lectures. Give study sessions! Easy to talk to. Very caring!
I learned very well with Prof Ma's style of teaching. He is very caring for his students. I enjoyed and learned a lot from his inspirational talks.
Mr. Ma is an amazing one-in-a-million teacher! I have always loved Math but I never knew that it could be so much fun! His lectures were scintillating and his teaching technique very interactive. He inspired and motivated me to do my best! Mr. Ma truly cares about his students' education and that's very rare. He wants every student to succeed!
When I came out of high school, I had very weak foundation in math (did not know it at the time). I struggled in Pre-Cal with Professor Ma, but I went to him often for help and manage to pass. I just finished Calculus with Prof Ma this summer with a B. I learned a lot in pre-cal with Prof Ma in how to learn and understand math. I showed in Cal.
This calculus was amazing! Very engaging and interactive. I drove from San Jose to take this class; Professor Ma made all worth it. I learned so much. Great and best teacher ever! If you want learn, take it with Professor Ma.
Math is never my strong subject, but Professor Ma made it fun and manageable for me. With his interactive style of teaching, I actually learned the material rather than just memorization. I really appreciate his willingness to help students. Very caring! Give study sessions - be sure you attend.
I thought I understood calculus in high school after taking cal 1 with Professor Ma this summer, I realized I mostly memorized. The ways Prof Ma presents the math, it just make sense to me. He'll give students some tough love from time to time, admittingly, we needed it. Great motivator, teacher, and mentor.
Professor Ma knows his math and can actually teach. He is able to explain math at my level. I learn very well with his teaching style. I am not strong in math, but after one semester with prof Ma, I feel like I am a lot more confident in math now. Great teacher to have. I strongly recommend everyone to take him.
I am still in high school and took precal with professor Ma this summer. I really enjoy his methods of teaching. I was able to comprehend the math. Very helpful and very pleasant to talk to. Best teacher for me!
Professor Ma was an amazing individual and I was glad to have taken his summer calculus 1 class. His lectures are very comprehendable and he brings a lot of energy to them! I am so glad I had him as an introduction to calculus. Not only did he teach, he also connected with the students. The tests may have been difficult, but I sure learned a lot.
He's professional in teaching Math. His explanation is great. He shows genuine care for people who want to understand the concept of Math. He doesn't like memorizing too much, especially if it's something you are supposed to understand. He's strict with the grading, but it is very clear what you should do and what you should not do.
Took his class over the summer, sat in the front row and had a very funny relationship with him and be able to talk to him like he was more than my professor if that makes any sense. Definitely made me feel a little more confident in myself in math in general.
I took Cal1 with Professor Ma over the summer and continue on to Cal2 with him this semester. He was and is an amazing teacher. He really cares for students' progress and success. Unfortunately, I had to withdraw from school, but I hope to take it with him next semester. I really appreciate you sir!
Do not take his stats class. I have heard good things about him in other math subjects but his ability to teach stats is terrible. He has said he hates stats and it shows in his lectures. His lectures are unorganized and unclear. He then blames students for not understanding and wont clear things up. Nothing is online. Had to teach myself stats.
He is very passionate towards his students. He will do his best to help you succeed. All he wants in return is your effort and participation in and outside of class! Overall great teacher!
Professor Ma is probably the best math professor at Delta. He gives very well structured lectures that apply to material. He doesn't collect homework, but you need to the homework so that you understand the material to pass the class. The only grades you get are the four tests and one final you take during the semester.
I took statistics last semester with a different professor, could not understand her, I dropped. This semester, I took it with professor Ma, I love his class, he made it much clearer for me. I was not successful in Calculus 2 last semester with a different professor. This semester I drive to Mountain House to take the class with professor Ma and he is great. The ways he explained the topics just make sense to me. He knows his math for sure and able to teach it well. Most importantly, he cares about students success. Great Teacher!
Stats is hard for me. I failed 2 previous times with other teachers. Prof. Ma made it to where I can at least hang with it. He gave study sessions, if you not a strong math student, go to his study sessions and ask questions in class. He'll help you! He is easy to talk to especially you try hard. Thank you prof Ma for all your help.
I took Calculus 1 in the summer and Calculus 2 in the fall, both with Dr. Ma. He is an amazing teacher! I've learned so much with him. The best teacher I've ever had at any level. I strongly recommend taking his classes to everyone.
Professor Ma is just AWESOME! The best professor I ever have. Explains things well and very caring. Gave lots of study sessions.
I took Calculus 2 at the Stockton campus twice and could not understand it both times. This is my 3rd attempt at calculus 2 and I've decided to drive to Mountain House campus to take it with Professor Ma. He is as good as what others have raved about his teaching. He helped me a lot in the learning of the material. Greatest Professor ever!
Professor Ma is really good in explaining the math concepts. He really knows his math and broke it down for students. I really enjoyed his teaching style.

I just wanted you to know Professor Ma, you're amazing in how you teach and the level of care and concern you have for your students in our progress. Your love to teach and help students really come through in all you do for us. Thank you, Professor Ma!
Hands down, one of the best Math professors I've ever taken in my life! Professor Ma makes Calculus easily understood. He goes by the pace of the class. Humorous, interactive, most importantly, he makes sure you actually understand the material before moving on. I drive from Stockton just to take his class, plus free pizza in study sessions!
Calculus does not come naturally to me and I have to put in a lot of time to study. I found that I can really learn with the way professor Ma teaches. He explains well and challenges students to learn more, and does give you support and guidance. Be sure to attend his study sessions when he offers them. He cares about your progress. Great man!
Driving to Mountain House to take Calculus 2 with professor Ma is all worth it. I learned so much this semester compared to my previous Cal2 experience. I will be driving to Mt. House again in the Spring 2020 to take Calculus 3 with Ma. The way he analyzes and breaks down the math concepts and theories are just so easy to follow. I love the class.
I heard very good things about Dr. Ma's teaching; so, I took cal1 with him in the summer and it's all true and more. I had just finished cal2 with him. I'll be taking cal3 with him next semester. Awesome professor! I love the interactions he has with students and the inspirational speeches that he shares with students. He's earned my respect!
I just want everyone to know that professor Ma is the best. He is very caring and very eager to help if you try hard. I always struggle with math, but prof Ma made it to where I feel like I have a chance to pass this class. I attended all of his study sessions and got a lot of help. It was his constant encouragement to really helped me. Amazing!
Professor Ma, by far the best teacher I have ever had. He'll go above and beyond to help students; he gives study sessions outside of regular class times. He had turned me from a math hater to now a math lover. He is very intelligent and yet down to earth and easy to talk to. I am looking forward to taking Calculus 1 with him next. Fun class!
I did not do too well at the beginning of the semester in Statistics; I went to his office and have a discussion with Profess Ma. Man! What a turn around for me; Prof Ma was very encouraging and inspirational. He puts things in perspective for me and I get it. I started attending his study sessions and now I pass the class with a B. Amazing Man!
I have to work a lot of hours to make ends meet; practically have no time to study. I did not do well at all, went to talk to professor Ma about my situation and he is very understanding. He offered different options to me to finish out the semester, and I worked really hard for the class. Thanks to Prof Ma's help, I pass the class. He cares!
It's quite simple, if you study the lectures he gives the class is a free A. But who cares about the A, he really invests in all the students and makes math much more simplistic. However, if you don't study the material, YOU WILL FAIL!
Professor Ma is very caring and concern for his students progress. If you really work hard and try your best, he will help you ; I know because I stat before and took it with him, big diffrence. I actually understood it. Amazing teacher! The best!
This has been my second semester with Van Ma. He does does a fantastic job explaining things and will really work with you if he sees your efforts. Math had never been my strong-suit, but after taking pre-cal and calc 1 with him I can officially say I am confident in my math abilities. If I can do it, so can you. Sign up for the class.
He's great and cares about each student individually. If you try your hardest and participate in class you will get a good grade.
Hands down, the best professor I could have ever ask for. I have never had a Math professor that knows the topic as well as he does. His lectures are organized, clean and highly engaging. Most of all, he cares about how he presents his material and strives to break down difficult concepts so all students can understand the material. He really cares
Now that the semester is almost over with just the final exam to go, I feel very grateful for what professor Ma has done to help me and the class. He made Calculus 3 more manageable for me. Given the Covid-19 situation, it's even more obvious now to see that professor truly cares for his students. He is a great mentor and the best teacher there is.
I am done here at Delta - transferring to UC Davis in the Fall. Thank you professor Ma for everything ! Your passion in teaching; your concern and care for your students' progress. I took PreCal, Cal1, and Cal2 all with Dr. Ma, an amazing teacher and mentor. I am no longer intimidated by Math, in fact, love it now!
Professor Ma is an amazing teacher. He made math easy and fun for me. Don't give me wrong, it's still a lot of work, but it's all worth it. With the Covis-19, our class transitioned online and Dr. Ma give online live lectures and study sessions regularly and it really helped. Above all, he really cares about his students. I strongly recommend him.
I am done and very happy, Covis-19 and all. It's been a challenging semester for me. Professor Ma is amazing through this whole process. I already experienced how good he is face to face and now online, no drop offs there. He really cares and he came online daily to help students with any question. If you want to learn math, then take professor Ma.
I've taken 4 classes with Professor Ma, PreCal, Cal1, Cal2, and Cal3. He is a great teacher, mentor, and motivator. At times, I wanted to give up, but prof. Ma talked some sense into me. At the beginning, math was difficult for me, but now, I actually love it. He is very caring, but do not make up excuses; easy to talk to, he'll help you!
I have heard that professor Ma is really good so I signed up for Precal which I did do too good with a different teacher. I really like how he explain math in person and just as good online. I can see how much he cares for his students. He is constantly online live helping students, even on many weekends. Great teacher! Take him!
I am done here at Delta. I took 4 classes with Professor Ma, Precal, Cal1, Cal2, Cal3. I drove 1+ hours just to come to take his classes. He's an amazing teacher who truly cares for his students. I felt and see that even more of his willingness to help students during the Covid-19 disaster. He has had a major positive impact on me and on education.
Words can't explain how grateful I am to have taken his class. Prof Ma is one of the most caring, considerate, intelligent people I know. The class is completely based off of test scores but you're given lots of resources by professor. Just show up to the study sessions, watch his lecture videos and you'll do great! He's a gem of a person.
I have great things about professor Ma and now I have experienced it first hand - he is amazing and very caring. I have learned so much in the class. If you need help, just be honest with him and don't try to make excuses - he will help you. If you can, be sure to attend his online daily study sessions - they are very helpful.
Wow! I finally passed Calculus, what an amazing teacher. Professor Ma spends a lot of times help students. Very clear and easy to follow lecture videos; he gives study sessions on zoom daily to help students. I took advantage of it and it helped me a lot. I heard very good things about him and I finally took it with him. He's vary caring!

He is very intelligent and knows his math and yet able to explain math very clearly at the students' level of comprehension. You better take him.
After having taken PreCal and Cal1 with Professor Ma, I can honestly say he is the best! It was hard work for me, but I do learned so much in his classes. I only memorized the content for the tests in all previous math classes. After 2 classes with prof Ma, I feel very comfortable in analyzing and solving math problems with understanding now.
Professor Ma provided very clear and easy to follow lecture videos. He also gave online study sessions on zoom regularly. I struggled in calculus in my previous attempts with other professors; I just could not get it until I took it with Dr. Ma this summer. I attended every study sessions and actually learned a lot. He 's the BEST!
Even if you are not great at mathematics, you'll be able to learn a lot and truly enjoy it. Professor Van Ma is really interested in his students' learning. He wants you to succeed.
He's a good teacher and knows stats well, but the only grades are the 4 tests. If he thinks you did "too well" on a test, you have a Zoom meeting with him during which you have to do more problems. If you get any wrong, you get a zero on the test. A 100 point test reduced to the 3 questions he'll ask you on Zoom.
Professor Ma is an awesome teacher. He goes out of his way to help students, as he would say, when you do your part. His lecture videos are very clear and easy to follow.
His lecture videos are all you need to learn the material. He give a lot of study sessions. I missed a few, but they were recorded and posted. Dr. Ma is very easy to talk to and he really cares. Don't try to make up excuses when you talk to him. He will help you.

I actually do not mind taking online classes with Dr. Ma. He posted lecture videos (good ones) and posted all study sessions videos. After a test, you may be invited to a 15 minutes zoom meeting, in which he'll just ask you a question or 2 from the test - it was quite pleasant and I appreciated the encouragement that he provided. Great professor!
This class was the hardest thing to do online. His tests are the only thing that are graded, but he did throw in some extra credit in there. Honestly, if you just watch his lectures (they're not very long) and do the practice problems, you'll pass. However, as with most math/science classes, get ready to work your butt off if its online!
I have always struggled in math and worse online. But with professor Ma, I was able to understand and pass the class. Be sure to attend the study sessions - it helped me tremendously! Professor Ma is a very caring teacher and always willing to help students. Warning: do NOT make up excuses with him - just be honest with him. Great teacher!
Professor Ma hosted study sessions regularly and I really enjoyed and learned a lot from participating in them. He posted lecture videos in Canvas and they are easy to follow. Overall experience with this class is great. I definitely would take more math classes with him.
I took Calculus 1, 2, and 3 with professor Ma. Transferred and completed my first semester at UC Davis. I can honestly say that prof Ma had prepared me very well. I do miss his style of teaching and his interactions with students in the classroom. If you want to learn Math, do yourself a favor and take it with Professor Ma. Highly recommended!
I took Precalc and Calc1 with him and I have to say Prof Ma is one of the most caring, considerate, intelligent people I know. The class is completely based on test scores but you're given lots of resources by professor. Just show up to the study sessions, watch his lecture videos and you'll do great! He's a gem of a person.
I had Zoom meeting with him and he is very approachable and easy to talk to. Professor Ma is an excellent teacher. He is very caring and supportive of his students. If you need help, just talk to him, but do not make up excuses. His lecture videos are great. He also gave a lot of study sessions. I strongly recommend Professor Ma!
All I can tell you is that Professor Ma had prepared me very well. I continue to take math classes at Berkeley and excelling. I took Calculus 2 & 3 with Professor Ma, couple of semesters ago and really enjoyed and appreciated his ways of presenting mathematics. He is very passionate about teaching and it shows. Great teacher!
Hands down the BEST teacher I ever had. Professor Ma expected you to learn, not memorize. But if you want and need to learn the math for your major, he is the one to learn it with. Very caring and easy to talk to. Be sure to attend his many study sessions; it HELPED me tremendously. Take him!
Was super hard but was a good teacher. Was very in depth and only graded on exams. Occasionally gave opportunities for extra credit. Tests were very hard and were tricky. He did get the answer keys on the exams wrong all the time but always made sure to reimburse the student. Overall a pretty good guy but was at times overkill.
I am an older student and math has always been a challenge to me. At one point, I was about the drop the class. Professor said that he sees potential in me and encouraged me to stay with it a bit longer - I did and continued to improve. I owe it all to professor Ma. A TRUE teacher at heart - great guy and very caring. I strongly recommend him.
I worked really hard for Calculus 1 & 2 with professor Ma and passed both classes with lots of help and encouragements from him. I need a lot of accommodations for my learning and test taking and Professor Ma went out of his way to help me. He is very caring. I suggest that you attend his study sessions. Best professor in my book!
You will not find better teacher than Professor Ma! His lecture videos are very clear and easy to understand. Be sure to attend his weekly study sessions, it helped me a lot. Great guy and excellent teacher!
I took this class Spring 2020. I took this class at a different college and failed 2 times and decided to commute to pass this class. Ma in-person lectures are simple, but it's important for students to do the work. Ask questions, do suggested homework problems, sit near the front, and study for the exams.
Great teacher. Explains really well. Hard to understand with heavy accent but you get used to it quickly.
Professor Ma explains math very well. Be sure to attend his study sessions, ask questions and you'll get very detail explanations. He is very easy to talk to, and very willing to help, especially when you're trying to learn and show that you care to learn. He is the BEST!!!
I could only choose three tags but I would also describe Prof. Va as: caring, having amazing lectures, having extra credit, and above all else, inspirational. He does not ever make you feel dumb about a question; he's the kind of professor that truly cares about teaching and inspiring others to love math the way he does. I highly recommend him.
Graded on only 4 tests and 1 final. Homework is recommended, not mandatory. Bonus quizzes for extra credit after some tests. Prof Ma really cares about his students. After each test you may be invited to have a 5-10 mins one-on one meeting to just show that you know your stuff! Other than that, super easy to learn with Prof Ma! Take this class!!!
I did really learn alot from the professor he really does care for his students he was so helpful with me in his online class make sure to ask question about the material you don't understand. Don't be shy be brave and ask this teacher question he is really supportive of his students.
I am not a good math student in general, but after I took pre-cal with professor Ma, I become more interested in math. I took and really excel in Caculus1 with prof. Ma. His lecture videos are amazing and easy to follow. Be sure to attend his many study sessions weekly and ask lots of questions, he explains math very clearly. Great teacher!
Great professor!! Lecture videos are very well developed as well. Professor Van Ma went above and beyond to make sure we understood the material being taught (from zoom meetings to many examples in the lecture videos) and I will forever be thankful! Thank you professor for your hard work.
Amazing teacher! Amazing lecture videos! Amazing Live Zoom Study Sessions! I attended every Zoom study sessions and learned so much math this summer. I am grateful and really appreciate the effort and encouragement that Professor Ma provided. Highly recommended.
Hands down the BEST math teacher I've ever had. Professor Ma's lecture videos are amazing. He gives LIVE and interactive study sessions on zoom weekly (2-3 times/week). If you show that you're trying to learn, he will go out of his ways to try to help you. Highly recommended!
Amazing Professor! He spend as many time as he can to help us struggling students. Although the syllabus is very difficult and long, he make it understandable and not as boring. Homework is not required but recommended. Test heavy and it's very HARD! Despite the difficulty, he may still boost your grade by giving out quizzes and extra credit, etc.
This man is the most amazing human EVER! I took him summer2020 after highschool for precalc calc1 cal2 and he taught me so much and made sure we understood everything. The great thing about him is that he cares so much not just teaching but also mental health. To learn in this class you have to ask questions and participate. TAKE HIM! HES AMAZING!

In the last 3 semesters, I took Pre-cal, Cal1, and and Cal2 with professor Ma. He is an amazing teacher! He put in a lot of times weekly on zoom for students to ask questions. Be sure to participate in his study sessions on zoom - it helped me tremendously. He explains the math content very well and very easy to follow. Highly recommended!
I am not a very good math student, but professor Ma made learning math manageable for me. I actually learned a lot in his class. He truly wants you to succeed. His lecture videos are very clear. Be sure to attend his study sessions weekly. He is very caring, encouraging, and inspirational. Strongly recommended!
Professor Ma is absolutely the BEST teacher I have ever had in my life. If you want to learn, you will not find a better teacher to teach you, period! See you Dr. Ma in Calculus 2. Thanks for a great semester.
His lecture videos are great! Professor Ma hosted study sessions on zoom weekly where you may ask him any questions, and he'll give you very clear explanations. He'll also give some extra credits for students to earn, which helped me with my final grade. Best teacher for sure!
I'm gonna be honest, I completely failed this dude's class. HOWEVER, It was because I was juggling a full-time job half of the semester so I wasn't able to study so much for the first two tests. Once I did get to studying, his lectures are so fluent and amazing I was in awe. Never had a teacher who cared so much, especially a MATH teacher.
I don't think you will find a better teacher than professor Ma, especially in Math. He truly cares about his students. I work during the day - He answered my emails late at nights and weekends. His lectures are amazing. Join his weekly study sessions if you could. He explains math concepts very clearly and easy to follow. Best teacher I ever had!
CLASS IS VERY DIFFICULT, grade heavily on tests, and there are few extra credit opportunities. Pros: He teaches math very well and are considerate of my struggles, he dropped my lowest test score (bumped me from 84% to 90%!!!). Cons: he may invite you to test verification either randomly or if he suspects you...... and good luck......
I did not pass Cal1 the 3 previous attempts with other professors at 2 different colleges. I heard good things about Professor Ma at Delta and decided to give it a try. He is amazing, tough, and very caring. I attended his weekly study sessions, he helped me a lot, and explains math very well. I finally passed Cal1 with a B. GREAT PROFESSOR!
This dude is very good! He responded to my emails very quickly. I suggest that you join his weekly study sessions. His lecture videos are very good and clear. He is very willing to help students. Professor Ma is the BEST teacher I have had!
Very unorganized but explains stuff well. I struggled because of how unorganized he is, but replies fast.
Professor Ma explains math concepts very well. His lecture videos are very good and easy to follow. His study sessions are highly recommended! It helps that he gave some bonus quizzes. He is a no-nonsense guy and really cares about his students' success. I really enjoyed and learned a lot from his lecture videos and study sessions. Take him!
Dr. Ma is AWESOME! He is very caring. When you talk and ask for favors, be honest and not to make up excuses - he does NOT like that. Definitely attend all of his study sessions and ask questions - he'll help you. His lecture videos are very well presented. Highly recommended!
I find his lecture videos were very well presented and easy to follow and understand. I also attended his weekly study sessions, which helped me a lot. He responded to my emails very promptly, even late at nights and weekends. Professor Ma is very caring for his students and very willing to help. He explained math very clearly. He is the BEST!
Hes nice, but I dont feel that he cares abt students or success. Hard to get in touch other than email. Very unorganized & grades based only on 5 testsI think its unfair. Esp. if ur not good in math. He explains things well but theres is no graded practice or key to book assignments. Lockdown-Respondus + possible zoom test certification.
Great teacher! Amazing lecture videos. He explains things very well. Be sure to attend his live study sessions on Zoom. They are very helpful and I learned a lot from asking questions. Prof. Ma responded to my emails very promptly, even at nights and weekends. He's a very caring teacher. He dropped my lowest test score and I earned an A.
I generally straggle in math all my life, but I found I can learn with Dr. Ma. He explains math concepts very clearly and very easy to follow. I attended almost all of his study sessions live on zoom, and he helped me tremendously. He gave bonus quizzes and he dropped my lowest test score which helped quite a bit. He is a caring and amazing teacher
Prof. Ma is great! Lectures are clear even when topics got tricky. Graded entirely on 4 chapter exams and 1 cumulative final exam. But, he does assign practice problems from the textbook and offers live study sessions to help you prepare for them. May invite you to a 1-1 zoom meeting to verify that you understand the concepts. Offers extra credit!
I have to admit, math has always been difficult for me. But professor Ma made it easier for me, he just know how to explain math, unlike my previous teachers. I finally passed it with a B. Ask questions during his zoom study sessions. He helped me so much in understanding the math. He really cares about his students. Great teacher!
Kind professor! Only 4 tests & 1 final. Topics are rigorous & aren't always taught how they appear on tests. HW & live study sessions provide extra support. Doesn't round grades (ex: 79.99 is a C). No +/- grades. Getting an A is hard but not impossible! Study hard, do extra credit, ask for help, & learn from your mistakes. Makes you better at math!
Professor Ma is GREAT! I took both PreCal and Cal1 with him. He's tough, but fair, kind, and caring, and you will learn a lot. I need to understand math so that I can become a good engineer. My sister told me that he is excellent and to take him. She took Cal 1, 2 and 3 with him and she is about to graduate in electrical engineering from Davis.
At the beginning of the semester, Prof. Ma said "if you do your part, I will match your effort in every which way." My final average was 67.73%. I attended all study sessions and asked a lot of questions, he explained math very well. He must have noticed my effort and he dropped my lowest test, so I ended up with a C for the semester. Thank you SIR
Taking calculus online was very hard but Van Ma thoroughly broke down the material in each lecture. He is caring and I would recommend him to anyone looking to take calc over the summer. Thank you for being a great teacher!
Professor Ma is great! For Math 1 (Calculus I) over summer, my entire grade was composed of tests. The syllabus contained optional homework in the textbook. The lectures in this class are amazing and help you understand key concepts, generally by solving problems. The professor is easily accessible and will help you with any questions you have.
Professor Ma is the best! Tough, but fair, and very caring. If you try your best, he will go out of his way to help you to learn. I am a weak math student, but I can learn with him. Because of my efforts, he dropped my lowest test score for each of the 2 classes that I took with him. Amazing lecture videos! Be sure to attend live zoom meetings.
Very unorganized and grades are based only on 5 tests, Unfair and not great. He explains things well but there is no graded practice, homework study, or key to book assignments. If you are not good at math, the bad news is Lockdown-Respondus + possible zoom test certification in order to prove that you got the right score.
Prof Ma is tough, but fair. He is actually very caring for his students. Don't make excuses with him. His lecture videos are very well presented. I've learned very well with him in both Cal1 and 2. Amazing teacher! Highly recommended.
Best math professor at Delta. Class is reasonably difficult. Great lectures but you have to take good notes and do practice problems to do well on exams. Potential 1-1 zoom verification meeting. Organized, professional class. Professor wants students to do well, but definitely not an easy A.
Professor Ma is very good in explaining the math concepts. The lecture videos are very well presented and very easy to follow and to understand. He gave 2 bonus quizzes and dropped my lowest test which helped my final grade. I attended his study sessions frequently and they helped tremendously. He is very caring for his students. Amazing teacher!
Don't get me wrong, great professor, but don't be blinded by these reviews and their A's. The class is very hard and based on four exams. You have to be very disciplined in keeping up with your work or else you will fall behind. Lectures are amazing but it is very hard, especially if math isn't your strongest subject.
Great professor and very caring for his students. If you try, he will help you. I learned very well with him in both Calc1 and Calc2. Very well presented lectures and easy to follow. If you participated, he'll drop your lowest test score and he gave bonus quizzes, which helped me for the final grade. Highly recommended, if you're ready to work.
If you want to truly learn math to prepare for your future math courses, professor is the ONE to take. He's AMAZING! He gives weekly study sessions. He explain math in a way that is very easy to follow and understand. I will taking Calc1 with him next and looking forward to learning with him again. Great teacher!
Need I say more? I took 3 math courses with Professor Ma. He's an excellent teacher. Be sure to attend his study sessions. If you tried hard, he will drop your lowest test score to help you with your final semester grade. He also gave bonus quizzes to help you out. He really cares for his students.
He is an excellent professor and I took him for Math 39, Math 1, Math 2. Pros: He teaches very well, be sure to attend his Study Session and watch his lecture (and rewatch). Homework are not required but it definitely helps for the test. He also drop my lowest test scores. Cons: His classes objectively extremely difficult (especially calc 2).
I could never gasp trigonometry until I took it with Professor Ma. He's very good in explaining math concepts and how he put the examples together in such a way that's easy to follow and understand. I will actually drive to the south campus just to take Calc 1 with him next semester. He is a straight-shooter, but very caring. Extra CREDITS!!!
I didn't personally like this teacher because he was so passionate about math that it would feel like he was yelling at you. I really hated how the class was set up. Pre-recorded lectures that you watch "at your own pace" but in class he gets frustrated when some people are further behind than others. Grade based on 4 tests.
Professor Ma really helped me in this class. This is my third time taking this course, but my very first time with Prof Ma. I attended all of his study sessions on zoom and we meeting once a week in person. He gave 2 bonus quizzes which really helped. He also dropped my lowest test score, and that really help my final grade. Very caring teacher!
The lectures and interactions with us students during the in-person meetings are very dynamic and very engaging. In addition, Prof. ma also hosts weekly study sessions on ZOOM. I must say that I have learned much and being much more confident now. Great professor by any measures. Highly recommended!
I just finished this class and got a B, which is amazing considering I failed the previous 2 times with other professors. Professor Ma is very caring if you did your part and ask for help. He helped me tremendously and I attended most of his study sessions. He gave couple of bonus quizzes which helped me a lot. Great Professor!
I had Professor Ma for Calculus 1 and 2. Great professor! He explains math concepts very well and easy to follow. Even though the classes were in person, but he gave us access to all of his lecture videos, so you can also study at your own time. He is a no nonsense guy but very fair and caring for his students (as he said: if you do your part).
I could not have asked for a better teacher than professor Ma. He gave study sessions on zoom weekly. He gave bonus quizzes. He is very easy to talk to if you show that you try. He helped me throughout the semester and answered my emails even on the weekends. Great teacher!
Professor Ma is an excellent teacher! Even though this Calculus 2 class is fully in-person, we meet weekly in-person, he also post all his lecture videos in Canvas, and host weekly study sessions on ZOOM. What more can you ask for in a teacher? He also gave 2 bonus quizzes. He is very generous with his times and answered emails very quickly.
He knows his math and what's amazing is that he can explain it at the students' level of understanding. Professor Ma is my all time favorite teacher/professor. He even treat students to lunch during one of our class meetings. He also provided many discussions and valuable life lessons, at least to me, and I really appreciate his efforts. Thank you!
I am so grateful to professor Ma for helping me throughout the semester. He is a very nice man and very easy to talk to. I will be taking Math1 with him next semester and eager to learn from him. The best professor I have ever had!
I know for a fact that I would not have passed Calculus 1 & 2 without the help of professor Ma. He is a no nonsense guy who cares very much for his students and their successes. We meet in person for lectures, and he allowed us access to all lecture videos (this helped me a lot). On top of that, optional weekly study sessions on ZOOM. Lots of help!
Professor Ma is a kind and caring man and a straight shooter. You try hard and participate and he'll help you. He obviously knows his math and can present it in a way that is easy to understand. He gave 2 bonus quizzes and dropped my lowest test score and that's how I ended up with an A for the semester. If you want to learn math, then take him.
I took 3 Math classes with this man, he is great! He has a way of explain math that make it easy to follow. I really appreciate his willingness to help and with enthusiasm. I've learned so much math from his classes. In our final class meeting, I ordered food to treat us students. Thank you for everything professor Ma!
Professor Ma is a phenomenal teacher! The best I have ever encountered. He explains concepts very clearly and quite easy to follow. His live lectures are very engaging and very dynamic. Best of all, he cares and very willing to help. In addition to the in-person meetings, he also provided his lecture videos on-line, which helped me tremendously.
professor Ma is an excellent teacher! The best I've ever had. I work hard for my grade, but I learned a lot. I love the in-person discussions in class. They are very engaging and detailed oriented. He gave bonus quizzes, which helped a lot. Take him if you want to learn Math and not afraid to work for it.
His lecture videos are great. Very easy to follow and understand. I join his weekly study sessions and asked many questions. Professor Ma explains math very clearly. I learn so much from him compared to my previous teachers. He gave 2 bonus quizzes, and he dropped my lowest test score. Amazing and caring teacher!
He is the BEST! I have learned and developed so much from taking Cal1 and Cal2 with Prof. Ma. He pushed me to a point, where at times, I felt frustrated/discouraged, then he nurtured and encouraged me to get right back on track and then pushes and challenges me again. I have gained so much confidence in my own ability now. Great teacher and mentor!
Class is only based on 4 tests/final. Lecture videos are easy to follow, however, I had to use outside resources as some concepts aren't the best taught. The class is definitely based on how well you can self-teach yourself, so if you want the edge go to his office hours (even if you don't need help). If he sees you he will drop your worst test.
This is a Hybrid class. We meet in person once a week. I love Dr. Ma's lectures, both in-person and Online, very clear and easy to follow. He gave 2 bonus quizzes and dropped my lowest test score. Great professor!
I took 3 math classes with Prof Ma and without a doubt, the best teacher! I have grown so much from his teaching, guidance, and encouragement in many aspects beyond math. I am transferring to UC Berkeley and feel very confident that I can hang with the mechanical engineer program. He is a no non-sense, very caring, and very passionate best teacher!
Prof. Ma is very fair and caring. He will meet you were ever you are and HELP you even if it means guiding you step by step but you HAVE to put in the effort and do your best. He knows his stuff and knows how to explain math very well. He is a gem to Delta. If you need the classes he offers, take them w/ him. You will be in good hands.
Van Ma is an outstanding professor. He enjoys working with students and he is very passionate about mathematics! Be ready to work hard for him - you will learn a lot!!
If you truly need to learn your math, Professor Ma is the best! He is not the easiest by any stretch, but is the one that I learned the most with. He knows his math and can break it down to the students' level. As he said, "you do your part and I'll match your effort in every which way". He helped me tremendously! Great professor and very caring!
Van ma is an amazing professor. I started with him in precalc and i decided to take him for calc 1 because he teaches with detail and explains the "why" for concepts. He answers your questions and helps improve confidence by taking the time to make sure you understand the math! ASK QUESTIONS!!! that is how he will know where you need improvement!
This is my honest review. A lot of people adore Van Ma and I don't really see why. He gives no homework and the class is 80 % dependent on self-studying. He shows you how to solve problems, but a lot of the time I found his notes were not enough. He got in-depth with basics but test problems are harder than what he taught. Don't rely on notes.
Van Ma is like the Gordan Ramsay of Math and ur his cooks when doing math. You give him anything wrong he will give you the same reaction as Gordan would when you don't have the lamb sauce. But you will get better from it and learn the same as would in person from his videos just ask when u need. That's why everybody calls him Van Goat.
Prof. Ma is an excellent teacher! Math1 is hybrid (50% in-person & 50% online). He gives 2 weekly study sessions on zoom in addition to the weekly in-person meetings. I found that he explains Math very well. Easy to follow and understand. He expects a lot from students, but you will learn. He also gives bonus quizzes. He cares about his students.
Professor Ma is a top tier professor. My many semesters with him weren't all perfect and I had to retake Calc 2. People who claim the four exams and a final are not fair it is. After transferring to UCR ~90% of my course grades are 1 midterm and 1 final vs ~17% per exam. Thank you Prof. Ma. Your mentorship motivated me to pursue a Ph.D. in ECE.
Had Professor Ma back during covid-19 and he was great. The material was definitely more on the challenging side, but if you show up to his office hours and show a good amount of effort he will NOT forget that. In fact I ended the class with a high B, but he rounded me up to an A because I was consistently showing up and asking questions. Cool guy!
I will have to repeat Cal1 in the Spring. I'd like to blame it on Prof Ma, but I honestly cannot and should not. For a few times that I attended his lectures in-person, he is great and very dynamic! He also gives 2 weekly study sessions on ZOOM that I did not take advantage of at all - I have myself to blame. I will take his class again next time!
I just completed my M. E. degree at UCLA. I took Calculus 1, 2, and 3 with Dr. Ma prior to UCLA. I must say, he is the best! I have to work very hard, but learned very well with him. He is very caring and inspirational (IF YOU DO YOUR PART!) He is a no non-sense guy, and willing to help when you "do your part", as he'd say. Great teacher!
I really enjoyed and learned a lot with Prof Ma. It's the way he explains Math that is so clear and easy to follow. I attended almost all of his weekly study sessions on Zoom. It's very helpful. He dropped my lowest test score for as he says "for doing my part". Also some bonus quizzes really helped as well. I strongly urge everyone to take him.
The Man knows his Math for sure. He actually teaches very well. Most importantly he cares about his students success. You will have to put in the work, but he'll help you all the way. I cannot ask for a better teacher. Thank you Dr. Ma! You're an inspiration and your encouragements throughout the semesters were what keeps me advancing forward.
I have tried different professors, but Prof Ma is the only one that I was able to understand and learn from. He is a no-nonsense guy, but will help you when you tried. I did learn a lot because he explains and made it easy for me to understand. I recommend attend his weekly study sessions on zoom. It helped me a lot. Great professor to learn from.
I am a high school student taking Math39 online with Professor Ma, who is an excellent teacher for me. I took trigonometry in high school and never understood it, just memorization for me. But with Prof Ma, I was able to see and understand concepts and how they are related. He made it clear and fun for me. I will be taking Calculus 1 with him.
I took 3 math classes with Dr. Ma - the BEST ever!!!!! He explains math concepts in a way that made sense to me. Love his energy in the classrooms. His zoom study sessions are very helpful. Since I transferred, I really missed his teaching and interactions. A word of advice - do not make up frivolous excuses with him, just be honest with him.
I am taking Calc2 with professor Ma for the first time. I've heard many good things about him, but did not have transportation to the Mt. House campus. I am so glad that I am taking the class with him now. He is excellent! Very dynamic in his lecture, and have students very engaging in the discussions. I will update at the end of the semester.
Good professor, perhaps one of the most memorable I have ever come across. However, he is heavily reliant on you as a student to ask questions and set the tone for each lecture. If everyone in class doesn't know what they're doing or ask any kind of logical questions, Prof. Ma will oftentimes let the class fall into awkward silence.
Professor Ma is an EXCELLENT teacher and he is a straight shooter, but very caring for his students. Because of my full time job, I have to drop the class even though Dr. Ma had accommodated me for my every request. I will take the class with him again, when my situation improves. His lectures are very dynamic and thorough.
Calculus 2 or math in general is a difficult class for me. However, Professor Ma made it manageable for me. I worked hard for it. I attended his weekly study sessions on zoom ans was getting great help as a result. He is an excellent teacher! You can feel and see that he cares for his students. Thank you sir for all your help!
I took Cal1 and Cal2 with Professor Ma. I learned so much with him. He is a very caring person and a straight shooter. No pretenses. As he always said "do your part and I will match your effort in every which way!" That is very true! I will be taking Cal3 with him in the fall and very much looking forward to it. He also gave bonus quizzes.
I struggled with Math in general, and I've tried Cal1 with different professors, but were not successful. I tried it with Professor Ma this time, and through many hours of in person meetings and zoom study sessions, I am final able to pass CALCULUS 1 with a C. I find that when you try hard, Prof Ma goes out of his way to help you. Great Teacher!
Professor Ma is very good in explaining math concepts. I learned a lot from his lectures and study sessions. The bonus quizzes helped me out for sure. He is easy to talk to and will help you when you try hard. I will be taking Cal 1 with him this summer. I am nervous, but feel like it will be ok taking it with him.
He is NOT the teacher for many people. His teaching style is really for people who are determined and are not discouraged after failing once or even twice. He will help you if he sees you are not making excuses and are putting in the work. There are other prof at delta that could align with ur style of learning. 5 exams ZERO homework.
Calculus is difficult for me. I failed 2 times with other professors. I am able to pass with Professor Ma. I attended all in-person meetings and most weekly study sessions on zoom. He is always there to help and to encourage me. He gave 2 bonus quizzes. I will be in his Math2 in the summer. I strongly recommend him if you want to learn.
He knows his Math for sure! Explains concepts very well and his ability to construct examples on the spot to help you further. He is a no nonsense guy, but very caring. He will give a doze of reality and encouragement when it's appropriate. I really enjoy Professor Ma's teaching in both academics and life lessons. Very positive vibe!
Dr. Ma is very easy to talk to when you try. After I failed the first test, and through his encouragement, I ended up with an A for the semester. When you tried hard, he will drop your lowest test score and also gave bonus quizzes. I recommend attending his weekly study sessions on zoom. His lecture videos are great. He is the best!
He is very good at explaining. He does not give points for homework, however, he gave bonus quizzes. In addition to the in-person class meetings, he is on zoom twice a week for students to ask questions also. His tests are fair. I found that I can learn very well with him. He responds to emails very quickly. I will take him again for Calculus 2.
I am a black man for those concerned by race. Professor Van Ma is a great professor. But Van Ma is caring, honest and detailed. This class was very difficult for me, but doable. I did all of his suggested exercises to prepare for exams. There is no homework, so studying is all on you.
I had to drop the class because of my full time job. Being in Prof Ma's class for 2 weeks this summer, I can see and feel why he has such high ratings. He is very dynamic in his lectures and very engaging. He goes above and beyond to help help students. I will rearrange my schedule so that I can take his class again in the fall.
Rude and aggressive. I'm not the first to say this on RMP. He makes you join a zoom if he doesn't think you did the tests. I understand this on his part but he was making comments because I was taking my time. When I told him I had a learning disability he wasn't understanding and became sarcastic. I did report him to the Dean of Math and Science.
I have always struggled in Math, but Professor Ma made it much more understandable for me. I attended all of his weekly study sessions on zoom and he is very helpful. He is very easy to talk to, and very willing to help, especially when you, as he puts it "doing your part". I really love and respect Prof Ma for what he is doing for his students.
I just completed the final exam, and I must say that was an intense Summer Calculus 2 class. I also learned a lot from Dr. Ma not only in the Math topics, but also valuable life lessens. I really appreciate all the conversations/discussions beyond Mathematics. He is an EXCELLENT and very CARING professor!
I could not have asked for a better teacher than professor Ma! In fact he is the best in my opinion. A no nonsense guy who will go out of his way to help you when you really try. He gave bonus quizzes and hosts zoom study sessions weekly. He is easy to talk to when participate and trying to learn. Highly recommended for all who wants to learn.
Do NOT waste your time with this professor, his class is based off of exams, he will contact you if you get a good test score and if you can't demonstrate the lesson well enough for him, he'll automatically give you a 0 on that test regardless of what your previous score was. During the meetings, he was very rude and would give bad attitude.
I just wanted to say that professor is a phenomenal professor! I worked hard for my grades, and everyone else should as well. I was invited to zoom to verify my understanding of the materials and I did well, because I actually learned the materials. I am actually glad that he is doing it so that there are no undeserved grades to compete with.
Professor Van Ma is a good professor, he's super accommodating when you need any help. If you're taking this course online, be sure to watch all the lecture videos, take notes and stay on top of everything. He also provides extra credit opportunities, so take advantage of that as it'll really help boost your grade.
Overall this teacher was creepy and disturbing.Half of the class would be him telling stories and bragging about his past instead of teaching the subjects. The way he approach certain female students is very creepy, hugging and coming up female student middle of exam. Showing lectures from 6 years ago and repeating homework outline is not teaching.
I can confidently say that Prof. Ma is the BEST teacher I have ever had, bar none! When try hard, he will go out of his way to help you. In addition to attending the in-person meetings, I attended all of his zoom study sessions -very helpful and enlightening. I enjoyed when he was asked, then willing to shared his life experiences, good and bad.
Taking Cal1 with prof Ma, I realized how unprepared I was in Algebra and Trigonometry from my previous classes. Plus the summer session is at a much faster pace, I was not able to catch up. Even though I failed, I will retake Cal1 with Prof Ma in the Fall. He was very generous with his times in helping me. He is very caring, a TRUE TEACHER!
For 2 semesters, I drove almost an hour each way so that I can take his class. At the end, it's worth it. I will be driving again in the Fall to take Calc3 with Prof Ma. I found that I can learn very well with his teaching style. More importantly, he cares and very willing to help when you tried. Be sure to participate and ask questions.
I didn't get the best grade in this class but this professor is one of the best professors I have ever learnt from. He really cares about his students and has a huge passion for teaching. Even though lectures were 4 hours long, time really flew by in his class. You have to put the work in the class if you want to succeed.
Not good at teaching at all. He would get very theoretical about the math to the point where he would make a very simple concept confusing. Worst of all, he made a lot of students uncomfortable with the way he would interact with female students. Please save yourself the time and take a different professor. If he is the only professor, just wait.
After 2 classes with Dr. Ma, I can definitely conclude that he is the best there is. He is very patient with me and help me through my struggles in math. Without his help and guidance, I will never be able to complete Calc 1 & 2. I am currently enrolled in his Calc 3. If you truly want to learn, he is an excellent teacher to guide you.
TBH, I struggled with math my whole life. Calc 1 was very difficult for me. I tried it at the Stockton campus at 3 different times to no avails. I finally decided to take a drive to Mt. House to take it with Prof Ma this summer. Yes, it is still difficult for me, but I am improving so much with Prof Ma. I can't thank him enough for truly helping me
Would not recommend this professor unless you are amazing at math. Your ENTIRE calc 1 grade depends on exams. He gives us practice problems from textbook but makes them a lot harder on the exam and tries to trick you on them too. He would also be very creepy towards the female students and hug them after class. I felt very uncomfortable.
Prof. Ma's teaching style may not suit everyone, but for those willing to put in the work, he's a great resource. Though challenging, his classes are worth it - just make sure to stay engaged, use study aids like unstuckstudy ai, and you'll learn a lot.
Prof Ma is great at explaining math concepts. If you "do your part", as he often said, he will go out of his way to help you. You still have to learn the material and earn your grades tho. He gave 2 bonus quizzes and dropped my lowest test score - that helped me a lot. Over all, he is a great teacher to learn from.
Professor Ma has opened my interest for math. Although his class wasn't easy, it only made student work harder. Students will learn the notion of discipline. Truly amazing professor.
I am so confused how this man has such good ratings. He is a horrible teacher and could not care less about you as a human being. I did every single practice problem he gave us for the last exam, all 157 of them, and still failed miserably, as well as most of the class. The only good thing about his class is the assistant Keldon. Keldon is amazing.
Not sure how he has so many good reviews. god awful prof. Only good teacher is Keldon. He teaches the basics w old videos & tests you expecting to know at his same level. Not accommodating & will throw u under the bus if HE messes up. His inperson class is a talk-show & will put u on the spot for not understanding something.
nice guy but dont expect accommodations when life happens. He has a weird way of interacting with his Female students and making odd comments. If youre good at math take him, if you actually want to pass ur better off somewhere else. This class is good for math junkies. Not folks who are trying to learn and get by very little forgiveness
Prof Ma is an excellent teacher! When you do you part, he is very accommodating to your requests. He is a no non-sense guy, but very willing to help. He cares for his students. I could not have learned Cal1 and Cal2 without his extra help.
He explains thing very clearly. Calculus is not for everybody, but I believe that prof Ma did a great job in teaching it. His lecture videos are very good. Be sure to join his zoom study sessions and attend his in-person meetings. Together they all helped me. He cares and easy to talk to, well provided you, as he says "you do your part".
I just finished taking the final exam. Cal2 was very difficult for me, but Dr. Ma helped me a lot and I learned and performed well enough to pass the course. I worked full time and I am grateful for all of his accommodations and extra help. Great teacher and person!
I am glad that I drive to Mt. House to take his class. I finally able to pass Cal1 with Dr. Ma, that I could NOT with other professors. He is very willing to help when he sees that you're trying hard. I recommend this professor to anyone that wants to learn Math and not afraid to work for it. If you don't do your work, he will not help you.
Thank goodness and thank you prof Ma, I finally pass Math39 after my 3 failed attempts with other instructors. His lecture videos are very good and very easy to follow. Join his weekly study sessions on zoom and you should be fine. I have to really work for this class because I am very bad in math. He will help you if you really try.
After 3 classes with Prof Ma, PreCal, Cal1, and Cal2, I can confidently say he is the best Teacher I have ever had. He is direct and caring, especially if you really try. He explains the math concepts clearly. If you need help, just talk to him, but do not make excuses. He was very accommodating to my situations and I am grateful for that.
I took 4 classes with Dr. Ma, Precal - Cal3. I learned a lot from that man, in Math as well as life lessens in general. He is an excellent professor and very willing to help students. If you really try, he will surely help you. So, as he always says, "If you put in your effort, and I will match it in every which way." Great and caring teacher!
Taking this class is a true test of wit and determination. I went in thinking it would be a cakewalk; ended up being the most difficult 4 months of my academic career. This is really the class you wanna take if A) You hate yourself or B) You're not a wuss because unless you were born with a big head you WILL have to work to pass this class.
Professor Ma's lecture videos somewhat straightforward and show you exactly what will be on the exams, don't really bother doing the recommended exercises they are always harder than the actual exam. However, the in person meeting show you a different side of VanMa. He was always a little weird with the girls in the class. Keldon is SUPER helpful.
I actually had Prof Ma for 4 classes, precalculus thru Calculus 3. He is a very decent man who knows his stuff. A no-nonsense guy and very willing to help if you participate. His zoom study sessions were very helpful. He gave 2 bonus quizzes and that helped me a lot. I live in Stockton and for 4 semesters, I drove to Mt. House to take his classes.
His lecture videos were amazing. He responded to emails very quickly. He will help you when you try and ask for help. So far, he is the best Math teacher I have ever had. I will taking Math 1 with him in the Spring. Because Math1 is not fully online, so I will have to drive to Mt. House to take his class. But it's ok, it will be all worth it.
Calculus was difficult for me and thanks to Professor Ma's help, I was able to pass the course. I have learned how to study and prepare for the class - thanks to Dr. Ma. If and when you need help, talk to him, but don't make up excuses, he did not like that, and he will help you and guide you to learn better. He is a great teacher!
TBH, I wish I had taken Cal 1 and 2 with Dr. Ma. I enjoyed thorough in his Calculus 3 class. It's obvious that he knows his Math, but most importantly, he was able to explain the deep math concepts at the level that In can understand. The fact that he was able to construct examples on the spot based on your questions are just amazing to me.
TBH, I'd not be able to pass the calculus series without the help of professor Ma. First, he is very good in explaining the materials. 2nd, he's very willing to help, provided you do your part. 3rd, bonus quizzes. He also dropped my lowest test score. I attended all meetings and the zoom study sessions. I worked hard. He is the BEST!
It's the holiday season and I am reflecting on who has been the most impacted person in my college life. It's without a doubt that Dr. Ma has helped me and guided me academically throughout Calculus 1, 2, & 3. I was never good in math, but I made it through with his help. I feel a lot more confident in my learning ability now. Amazing teacher!
I absolutely love math but this class killed my love for math. I genuinely reconsidered my major because of this professor. Prof Ma absolutely bullies you when you are in front of the class participating on the board. While he is a good as a teacher, he expects a lot of outside time and is a giant commitment. Prof Ma doesn't communicate well either
Incredible teacher, great lectures, TOUGH grader. His tests are downright unfair, but he will give you all the material you need to study. You will learn a lot in the class if you participate and pay attention, but be warned, it is not for the faint of heart. Expect to commit at least 3-4 hours of daily study if you choose Van Ma's class.
Professor Ma knows his Math for sure. He explains math very clearly and simply. I am of the opinion that Dr. Ma is the best math teacher that I have ever encountered. As he'd say, if you do your part, he will go out of his way to help you. He also gave bonus quizzes which helped my semester grade tremendously. Great teacher if you want to learn!
After taking this class with Prof. Ma, I feel very confident going into Calculus 1. Of course, I will take it with prof. Ma, whom I believe is the best at teaching the concepts of mathematics. The weekly Zoom study sessions that he hosted during the semesters helped me a lot. He gave us 2 bonus quizzes to help out with the semester grades.
I was never a good math student until I started taking Math classes with prof Ma. I just finished calculus 3 with him and feeling so accomplished. I have learned and improved so much in my knowledge of math concepts all because of Ma's guidance and encouragements. I will transfer to UC Davis this Fall and feeling very confident! Thank you, Sir!
Calculus 3 was difficult for me, especially on the 3-dimensions topics. However, Dr. Ma was very patient and helped me through it all. I am forever grateful to you sir, and now I am able to transfer to San Jose State in the fall. He gave bonus quizzes to help out with the semester average and that benefitted me greatly. He is firm but a kind man.
He must have created the best lecture videos in math. It's very easy to follow and very clear examples. I join his weekly study sessions on zoom and that helps a lot. Bonus quizzes did not hurt either. Professor Ma is great and very willing to help if you asked. I will be taking Calculus 1 with him and hope for the same success.
Just saw my grade posted, difficult materials, but I learned a lot from Prof Ma. I will continue with in Calc3 in the fall. He's tough, but fair, actually more than fair. He gave weekly zoom study sessions and bonus quizzes. As he promised, I did my part, and he dropped my lowest test score, which boosted my grade to a B. I am grateful.
Although I have not met Professor Ma in person yet, we did communicate often via his zoom study sessions, and I can feel and see how much he cares for his students. I tried hard throughout the semester, and he is always very willing to help, from explaining the materials to bonus quizzes. I could not have asked for a better teacher.
Even though I did not pass the class, but I must give credit to Dr. Ma's help during the semester. I have always struggled in math, and it took me 3 tries to pass Math39. He went out of his way to help me, and it is greatly appreciated. I will take the class with him again, and I am confident I will improve from here. Excellent teacher!
I took all Calculus 1, 2, & 3 with Dr. Ma. Math has always been a difficult subject for me, and I made it. If you try hard and ask for help, he will help you. He is a straight-shooter, but is a caring and understanding professor that I admire. His passion for Math and his love & concern for students' progress is very obvious. He is a rarity!
His calc 1 course is difficult, especially while taking it with 4 other courses like I did, but if you mainly focus on this class and put in A LOT of hours looking at his lecture videos and asking him questions than you have a good chance at an A. He will drop lowest test score if you participate. He grades really tough, be prepared to show work.
Math was always tough for me, but with Dr. Ma, it was manageable. It's the way he explain the math topics - excellent! He helped me greatly in my math journey, and I am very grateful to have a professor like him. He'll give you some Tough love", but you'll improve and learn. Highly recommended for all students who wants to learn Math the right way.
His lecture videos are great! He explains and present the math concepts and examples very well. He also offered weekly study sessions on zoom. He 2 bonus quizzes and dropped my lowest test score and that really helped my semester grade. He caring , but a no nonsense guy! Great job, professor Ma!
I drove all the way from Stockton, twice a week just to take his Calculus 2 class for the summer, it is worth every bit of it. Excellent teacher! he has great rapport with students. He is a straight shooter, but sincere and caring. Very willing to help students who tried hard. His is great in making difficult concepts seemed easy to follow.
Although this is the last time Math 39 is offered, the following can also be said about his summer classes. You are only graded on a total of 4 exams and 1 cumulative exam at the end. Extra credit is offered, but it is not enough to boost your grade. Tough grader as a result, but no homework. HEAVILY RELIES ON SOMEONE for help.
The math topics were difficult for me, but I finally passed the course. I've tried with different professors in 2 previous times, but to no avails. I must say that Professor Ma was very willing to help, and with the bonus quizzes, that helped me out. I will be take Calculus 1 with him in the fall. Excellent teacher!
I really enjoyed his teaching style. His presentation of the materials was very engaging and leaving you craving for more. His interactions with students in class were fun, productive, and constructive. Without a doubt, Dr. Ma is the best teacher I have ever had, period!
Professor Ma shows that he cares about student success. If you engage and show up to office hours, you'll be ok. The lectures are crucial and he emphasizes mastering math procedures. He doesn't assign homework assignments, but your grade is based on exams and bonus tests—exams are somewhat easy as long as you study. He genuinely wants you to pass.
Honestly, I wholeheartedly believe that Dr. Ma is the best teacher out there. He has a way of presenting difficult/complicated math topics in such that I can easily follow. He is very interested/concerned students success. He's a caring, but no nonsense man, who knows what is is doing and talking about. I will be taking Calculus 3 with him.
Having taken calc2 multiple times with other professors, I can say that professor Ma's way of teaching suited me. He was able to simplify completed math concepts for struggling math students like myself to understand. I passed Calc2 with him and will be taking Calc3 with him next. I am actually looking forward to his class now. Great teacher!
Excellent teacher! His lectures and in-person meeting are engaging, pleasant, and entertaining. He explains math concepts very well, and provides, based on your questions, very good examples for you to follow and understand. He also gave bonus quizzes, and he dropped my lowest test score, which helped me tremendously. Be prepared to work for it.
He is a great professor. I had him in the Summer 2025 for CAL 1, and it was amazing but get ready to work. The thing I like most about him is the he challenges you and your intelligence. He only grades based on the tests and if you are not a great test taker, then you have to work on yourself. Highly recommended.
Prof. Van Ma was the best professor (not even exaggerating) I've had at Delta. He truly cares about students' success. He posts lectures online and answers questions in class. Grades are based on exams and bonus quizzes. Ask questions and participate—it can really help at the end of the semester when you need a small % boost to help your grade.
I've taken Calc 1, 2, and 3 with Dr. Ma, it was hard, but I learned a lot from him. I believed he prepares me well for my next challenges, and that is at UC Davis. Do participate and ask questions in class. Show him that you care about your learning and he will help you, at least that's experiences with him for 3 classes. Highly recommended!
My favorite teacher and class! I usually don't like math subjects, but he made it very easy to understand. He sometimes shares life-experiences with the class, and I enjoyed and learned from that. He explains things very well. Oh and bonus quizzes! I really recommend him.
Overall he is a great teacher, but attendance is mandatory and he won't let you retake the in person test if you were absent. He is tough, but very fair. He is patient with students, at least with me (I asked a lot of dumb questions). He also gave bonus quizzes and that helped me pass this class. I will take him for Calc 2 next.
I enrolled in Calc 1 without knowing trigonometry at all, and Delta does not even offer precalc this semester, needless to say, I struggle in Calc 1. But Professor Ma helped me tremendously and I passed the course. I am thankful and very happy that made the drive to Mt. House to take the class with Dr. Ma. I will continue this journey for Calc 2.
I've tried different teachers, but with no success. I finally able to learn Calc1 & 2 with prof Ma. I worked hard and learned a lot. The 2 bonus quizzes certainly helped. The only thing is I have to drive to Mountain House to take his classes, but it's well worth it. If you can get there, he is highly recommended.
The best professor I've taken so far! He is very kind, chill, and caring. I struggled with math in high school, but understood and passed his calc 1 class. I would highly recommend take your math classes with professor Ma. He gave bonus quizzes and if you "do your part", he even drop your lowest test score, that is a great boost to the final grade.
