anyone who does poorly in vans class does not need to be in college. you go to class for a half hour, talk about the reading and leave early every time. he assigns two paper and six quizzes. i made an A+ in the class while putting in minimal effort

Ive taken two classes with Van and can honestly say he is the best English teacher at UA. You do the assigned reading in class, talk about it briefly and then leave after half an hour. If you miss a quiz you can make it up the next class without an excuse and he grades generously. He's a very good teacher unlike Nick Pincumbe.

Easiest grading teacher I have ever had. I had him 5-6:15 at night and we never stayed in class past 5:45 but once. He is a really cool teacher and makes many jokes throughout class. Very down to earth, but knows how to write well. He also brings out good qualities in your writing that you hadn't discovered before. Van is the man!

Such an awesome teacher! He has been my favorite teacher all semester, and I have recommended him to everyone I know. Easy quizzes if you do the readings, easy midterm, easy final. He keeps us at most 30 minutes out of our TR classes. He is so understanding, and he really knows what he's talking about. Summary: super easy, and great at teaching.

Amazing prof. He relates all of the reading back to real life. You do all the reading in class and then briefly talk about it. You only really need to read the stories you will have quizzes on but you know which stories in advance. TAKE HIM!

This teacher was so easy! His class was easier than most of the high school classes I took. All you have to do is come to class and turn in work and you will do fine. Tests are easy, you always know what to expect and not a lot of papers to write. I would take him again.

He is very nice and helpful. Covers material that is not boring. Really funny and really easy. TR class lasts 30-45 minutes

Easy easy teacher. Read in class. Usually get out early. Draw dinosaurs on your quizzes for bonus points- not actually, just smiles. A + without trying. Just go to class.

Very easy, yet interesting class. He gives simple reading-comprehension quizzes with lots of opportunities for bonus points and only requires one out-of-class paper. There is hardly any outside work -- reading is done in class! He has a fascinating view on a potentially mundane topic. Take this class if you can! Easy A+!

Van Newell is the man! You read and discuss in class and hardly do anything outside of class. Awesome professor! Definitely recommend!

I loved Van! He was SO helpful and there is barely any work outside the class (plus he lets out early sometimes). I liked how we could pick our own topic and it wasn't designated to a certain subject--that way I was able to write about something I was actually interested in! TAKE HIM

Best and easiest english teacher at UA. I've had him twice. Only keeps you for about 30 minutes, goes over everything on tests. Super goofy and funny in a weird way. Love him!

Van is AWESOME!! Reading that junk was boring, but he would explain afterwards so it wasn't too bad. Quizzes can be kinda tricky tho. I thought he was gonna be hard after his first test but he made it right, if you know what I mean.. Definitely take if you can. Just put a little effort into the class and you will come out with a good grade - A+

Van (Donavan) Newell is the best Lit professor at UA! He doesn?t make you read huge amounts of material like in other Lit classes, and he always goes over the material and saves time for questions. He only keeps you for about 30 minutes and we only had to write ONE paper. TAKE HIM!

Take notes and highlight the material he goes over in the book. Then study that for the tests. Very easy if you do that. Gives lots of extra credit. Get to leave class early. Very funny and sarcastic, gives good examples you can relate to

Super easy class, rarely stayed more than 30 minutes. He's funny and you never have to read anything outside of class. Take notes on everything he says and you'll ace all the tests.

He's so chill. The class is mostly discussions that are pretty interesting. He wants everyone to do well and is very willing to help. I'd highly recommend him. You have 3 papers, an annotated bibliography, one in-class essay, and the final is just a rewrite of one of your papers.

His teaching style is very laid back which is nice. Not too much work and an easy A as long as you do what needs to be done. Interesting and entraining teacher.

He's an overall cool guy. He grades rather easy as well and gives opportunities for extra credit. He does assign a lot of papers however.

I LOVE this class and I'll miss it so much next semester. Van is basically like a college student and he really relates to us. One thing that he is really strict on is attendance but that's fine because everyone wants to come to his class. Thanks for making english class fun Van!!

I took him for my freshman 101 class. He is very easy and laid back. Take him if you get the chance it's a fun class and a great GPA booster as long as you do your work.

He's really funny and very laid back. Class can get boring at times but so can any english class. He grades fairly and allows you to explore different writing techniques without fear you will receive a bad grade. I really enjoyed this class. A lot more fun than my EN 101 teacher

Van Newell is the one the finest professors at UA. His teaching method is absolutely brilliant. He relates the material making it quite easy to understand. Attend class, he is hilarious and easy going. The tests are straight up what he talks about in class. He most certainly cares for his students.

Mr. Newell is an awesome English teacher. He only assigns assignments that are on topics that matter to you. He wants for you to enjoy the class and to make a good grade. He tries to get to know you and where you come from. He is a great teacher for a first year English student. Easy A, not because he is a push over, but because he makes it easy.

Not great at lecturing - every class is him just summarizing the reading and then drawing some connection to college life, it gets repetitive fast. But he's a really nice guy and makes his tests easy. You can tell he wants everyone to leave with an A.

Mr. Newell was a great professor. We only had to read one book over the course of the semester which we had to write a brief paper on for our final. Other than that, there were only a few other papers. However, he is very clear with what he wants and even offers extra credit for getting help. He understand you have other classes, which helps.

Professor Newell is one of the greatest here at UA. He is very kind, funny, and laid back. Not once did he keep us the entire class period, yet I feel I learned a great deal in this course, and I HATE english/literature. He doesn't take attendance, but I highly recommend it just because it's interesting.

I had to take EN101 again after a mishap with my first professor. Van was awesome! Super funny, made class enjoyable, didn't expect anything unachievable out of us. He was super understanding and wanted everyone to succeed. I also took EN102 with him and it was a great class, interesting choice of book for us to read and analyze.

He doesn't want to shove a ton of busy work at you and make you miserable, all he wants is for us to be engaged and come out of class feeling like we learned something. Genuinely cares about his students. Made a real point to remember my name and ask me questions about my personal life and trips that I went on this semester and bond with me. Would sit down on peer review days and correct my papers for me and give me tips for what would make it better. Gives bonus points for going to the writing center to get help.

By far my favorite professor Ive had at UA. I took him for 101 and 102 and he genuinely cares about helping you succeed. There are only 4 papers and lets you choose topics that you are either interested in or about your future. Must take if possible

English has always been my worst subject until I had Dr. Newell. I took the same exact 209 class the semester before and had to drop the class maybe three weeks into the semester. Dr. Newell is a normal human just like us and understands that people have other things on their schedule like other classes and life outside of school. Try to get him!!

this is the easiest class I have ever taken. I did not buy the textbook or read which is all you're supposed to do in the class but if you go to class it is all talked about in lectures. All exam answers are talked about in class as long as you show up and take notes you will receive an A

One of the best professors I've taken. There are weekly quizzes and one final essay. Dr. Newell cares about his students and is very lenient with making up missed quizzes. Lectures normally lasted 40 minutes and were pretty entertaining.

He is a very respectful teacher who cares more about his students than grades. There are 4 quizzes total; if you review the readings before, you will get a good grade. There is one final exam and it is easy and he gives you a lot of time. I very much recommend him!

I honestly dreaded taking a literature class, but professor Newell genuinely made you want to come to class. The readings are pretty boring if you aren't interested in the type of stuff required to read, but he does a great job making examples and explaining the content. Class is just reading with one paper. Prof Newell is super nice, literally won't let people fail, just can be really boring. Monotone. Some of the readings are really interesting though and any responses are super easy. Reading quiz, paper, two assignments are the only grades. He gave out bonus when we all did poorly on a quiz. 5 absences allowed.

He is so easy. If you go to class you will without a doubt make an A or A+. He cares about his students and wants us to succeed. He is by far one of the best at this school. He makes class and work so easy to understand and do! I really recommend him.
