Awesome teacher! He's very good at what he does and is willing to help.
Slightly monotonous class, tests easy enough. Quizzes every so often. Provides notes. Easy enough!
Nice person, weird views on a lot of different issues. Tries to keep class interesting, but is way too tricky and mean with tests and quizzes.
Pay attention in class and you won't have to keep asking the GA's for help! More than just computer work, though
Great teacher. Makes class fun and interesting (go on a campus treasure hunt for extra credit during a class). A lot of answers on test come from class.
great teacher who is willing to help, the class is very easy, you just have to go and take notes. tests are straight forward and quizes are very easy.
Very interesting/entertaining class. He offers a lot of extra credit SO DONT PASS IT UP...You will need it on the exams! Pay attention in class, and never skip, he takes attendance pretty regularly. Lots of games and guest speakers to break the monotony.
Class is okay. You don't learn as much as you think you would. Every computer assignment is out of class so there is no help.
You'd think it be easy but it isnt. He's a nice guy but his tests are really hard with trick questions. Go to class because the book doesn't help!
Yeah...his tests ain't no joke! And neither is his attendance policy. He may not make mention of it during the semester, but if you miss more than 3 classes, he will take 3 points off your final grade. It can hurt you. Go to class and take GOOD notes.
For people that have little no graphics experience, this is a good class. But if you're a graphic design minor like me, don't expect it to be incredibly challenging. You'll learn some history stuff you might not have known about, but the class teaches really basic stuff on Quark and Photoshop.
He is a good teacher though the test questions are hard and tricky... quark assigments he offers no help and due outside the class.
makes the very interesting and fun. Can be comical at times. tests are so stupid, they will make you real mad because of the minor details he includes. but i would take him again if i had to because he is so interesting.
prof kornegay is a great teacher, his tests are extremely tricky so take good notes. but if for any reason you need to talk outside of class be prepared for the rudest and most inconsiderate person you've ever met; he'll make you feel like an idiot for even approaching him. beware!
awful!!! I'm a straight A student and making a C in his class. Sorry for the language but he is a total ass! And completely arrogant.. I can't stand him.. I'd seriously transfer to keep from having him again :( Awful Awful Awful
Not a cool teacher at all. He doesn't offer any help outside of the classroom. Don't expect this to be an easy class because the tests will kill your average. There is another prof. for 201 who's tests are online line I reccommend u taking him.
He is a great teacher with lots of fun stories. It's important to go to class, he takes attendance. The tests are challenging but you learn a lot, I reccomend this taking this class if you are a journalism or mass comm major
He is an okay teacher - I learn mostly from reading the book. His current events quizzes are tricky and his test are too detailed. He has his comical moments, but other than that his class is kinda dry. Don't take him unless you are going to attend class EVERYDAY and take THOROUGH notes!!!!!
not so much fun.this is supposed to be a graphics class, but instead you're going to learn about the history, doesn't really offer any help with quark but then is harsh on grading,go to class and take notes every detail b/c it will be on the exam, and the exam only has 40?'s so each ? is worth alot
He's really random and quirkey, but it makes class more interesting. Tests aren't to bad--he gives you a study guide. Make sure you don't miss more than 3 classes, and read the material and you should do fine.
Nice guy, Class is not so exciting, but it's not hard to make an A in here, Go to class, and study the notes he puts online & you'll be fine. Quark assignments are time consuming but easy to do and boost your grade.
Interesting class. Fun. Different. He's very approachable outside of class. Offers extra credit. Doing it will help your grade. You have to study for this class, but at least he's interesting. Wish the class was smaller.
Class is really boring. Attendance helps, so do good notes. DONT TAKE THE FIVE THIRTY CLASS. All he does is lecture, and he's a little arrogant. It's one of those classes that you just have to take. Eh well.
Go to class and try to write every word he says down because he will ask obscure ?s on the test. He gives no real direction for Quark assignments but will be quick to give u D! Dont expect to learn much interesting stuff about the subject - I felt more prepared for a job at Kinkos though!
If you fail this class you can blame yourself. He is tuff on grading, but pay attention in class, & take notes, & you will learn alot. He even posts all notes on BB. The hardest part about Quark assignments is getting to the lab. He uses cool examples & holds your attention. I highly recommend
Not a hard class at all, just study thoroughly for the exams. Quark assignments are pretty easy, just don't put them off til the last minute. Overall, the class is at least an easy B if you try.
I was excited to take the class, but he's not a good teacher - arrogant and upapproachable. I had a meeting with him and he showed up 20 mins. late with no apology. He also talks about himself too much and name drops. He focuses too much on history and dead photographers. The Quark projects were easy but detailed tests. Take Farrand if you can.
He was great! Get on his good side, and you'll be a-ok!
He is fairly entertaining in class, but its almost impossible to retain any knowledge from what he teaches. Write down his every word, and read it like the bible and you'll do fine on his test. The book is horrible, it doesn't follow his course material at all. The quark stuff will save your grade though.
I dropped this class because of his one sided Hitler type outlooks on society. He needs an ego check to bring him back to reality!
Nice guy. Will help you if you talk to him. Tests are challenging, but passable if you act like a college student and come to class. Quark is a pest at first, but with practice you'll get better. BE CREATIVE! It counts.
will not respond to e-mails and hard to get a hold of if you need help. While the class is entertaining this guy's tests are ridiculous. Dont take this class if you can help it.
This class is a bunch of propoganda to convince more J students to switch to his VisCom major!! It's stupid and uneccesary, the only good part is that it teaches you to use Quark. And by "teaches you" I mean, "You have to teach yourself" with a crappy little tutorial book.
The worst class I have taken in the J-School. I learned more about his trip to Albania than I did about Graphics. He didn't teach anything, just showed off slides. If you can't take Ferrand wait til next semester...even if it delays graduation. Oh, it helps to be busty and blond and sit in the front row.
easy class. tests arent bad, lots of E.C. a few time consuming out of class quark and podcast assignments though. nice guy, a bit unorganized, but the info is easy to learn even though i had no prior knowlege. takes attendence most of the time but class goes by quickly and you dont get behind if you have to skip a few classes. i got an easy high A.
No book; Unrealistic expectations by requiring you to learn a program in less than 2wks and produce quality results; Conflicting lab times which is bad considering these are all Mac programs; and watch out for favorites ! One girl in my class turned in a project 5 days late, and made an A while I turned it in on time and got a C; Harsh criticism.

Not a terribly difficult class, having had prior experience with quark and imovie. Class holds your interest for the most part. Prof is funny but not when you're the one being picked on. My biggest qualm- he is impossible to get in touch with outside of class.
He is very patient and understands the student's need for help, but I don't believe he has mastered what he teaches. An enthusiastic student may go into the course having mastered the programs better than the professor.

Easy easy class the test are common sense and if you have any taste you'll done fine on the homework. If you don't make an A in this class then you should rethink college ha
Good Teacher but sometimes goes over material too quickly and is hard to follow. A lot of time out of class is required and can be a harsh grader at times.
I've had him multiple times and he's never changed. He's never in his office hours and when he is he's useless. Shows a complete disregard towards student's success. Goes fast over material and sometimes isn't even prepared. I went a whole semester w/o receiving a grade on anything and he'd never show up to help me. Total loser!!
I'm a great student, but this class was really hard. I didn't have any practice with Indesign and he graded really harshly. The tests are really hard so make sure to take good notes
Kornegay is tough. He grades InDesign Labs to his preference. Shows some tools, but does not teach the program well. Lectures are primarily pictures, and so it's hard to take notes. I would take him over some professors, but definitely look at other options.
Took his summer session and it wasn't too difficult of a class. Very laid back compared to the regular fall/spring classes, especially with only about 12 students in my section. Allowed a few absences but you'd miss a lot since it was only a month long. All in all, I'd recommend for the summer only. FYI, he kind of looks like Woody Harrelson.
Kornegay has an eye for minute details and his grading reflects that. You must strive for perfection to do well. Doing the assignment just to complete it will not work. Wish he gave a bit more feedback and sometimes seems like he is not having the best day but he is a great professor. Highly recommended.
Professor Kornegay teaches off of a powerpoint that he doesn't put up prior to the class so you can't make notes on those. He also doesn't allow computers. His tests are tricky and he answers maybe 25% of emails so if you need help good luck.. His TA takes attendance 10 minutes before class is over. Overall wasn't a fan of this class.
I loved this class. He grades super hard but its just cause he wants you to do youre best. Dont expect to slack off and get an A. he goes through every program in detail and really knows his stuff. fav vis comm teacher so far.
Stickler for attendance. No laptop/tablet use. Grades InDesign labs with no mercy. His tests look nothing like anything we learned in class. I use to be a VisCom major and I absolutely HATED this class. HATE.
Very tough grader, his grading scale makes no sense and he keeps you in the dark on your standing in the class till the very last second. Not very helpful moves very quickly and assigns projects that are time consuming and boring. I do not recommend taking him at all. First C I have ever been given.
Yes his grading is relatively hard, but if you enjoy desiging it should be a hard class for you. I learned a lot from him. And if you want someone who knows what they are talking about and helpful feedback take him. You just have to ask for feedback.
This class would have been amazing if it would have been more hands-on. It needs to have about 20 students in it, not 100. This type of class needs to have individual and personal feedback for assignments, and that was not the case. Kornegay is a cool guy but the structure of the class could have been a lot better. Tests are extremely tough too.
If you take this class, be ready to use a program called InDesign. I had never heard of this program before this class and struggled with it. You will have 6 projects which account for 40% of your grade. However, if you are good with that type of program you will be fine. Prof Kornegay is good. I disliked the class, but the teacher was very good.
This class isn't bad at all. He tells you exactly what you need to know for the tests. Getting InDesign is kind of a hassle, but the labs aren't bad at all and he gives you tons of pointers on how to do them. MAKE SURE TO FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES IN THE LAB BOOK! He takes off 5 points for every mistake. The group video project sucks.
Overall, this class was easy, but this is coming from a high school paper editor-in-chief with 3yrs of InDesign experience. I had to help a lot of people with labs because the book sometimes wasn't clear enough. The video group project was AWFUL; one of our group members bailed on us without a word. He's a good teacher, but I'm glad I'm in Print.
Professor Kornegay will help you on anything. He wants you to be prepared to leave the university and find a job. Best professor I've had in the journalism school.
VAN THE MAN!!!!!!! For real he rocks he's a great prof you will learn SO MUCH INFORMATION. But, because of that you can't skip a single class or you'll be behind. Your grade really depends on how creative you are too. But yeah went in knowing nothing about AI PS and now I feel confident in the field.
I love the content of what the class was about, but he made everything so much more difficult than it had to be. Attendance is not mandatory but he goes over the labs in classes which would be impossible if you're not there. Tests are all multiple choice but the questions are purposefully confusing. Take a different professor!!!
An interesting guy. I wasn't interested in what he taught so it made it EXTREMELY hard to pay attention to the lectures.
Lectures are non linear and ramble on. Tests are super difficult and intentionally worded to mess you up. InDesign labs are excessive and difficult. Tells you that you won't need the textbook but the labs are impossible without it??? Attendance isn't mandatory but you have to go to class to get information because the slides he posts aren't helpful
I love Kornegay. He's a good professor and an even better person. You can tell he loves the field and has a lot of great stories and experience to show for it. You won't learn too much in programs because it's an intro class. It's useful for learning the basics of HTML and InDesign. You will learn many important concepts in an understandable way.
I thought this class was ridiculous for an intro class. Working on indesign is very hard and his grading is very strict. If you need help you're pretty much out of luck. Make friends in the class to help you out with the projects. the tests are the only somewhat easy thing about this class. Dont recommend
I took Journalism 203 as an online course summer 2017. I managed to get an A in the class but Professor Kornegay made it extremely difficult on me. He didn't have office hours, and refused to meet with me about getting extra help on his indesigne assignmemts. He also rarely responded to my emails and when he did it was not in a timely fashion.
He was okay. Only allows laptops on lab days. He keeps lectures interesting and is funny, but his test questions are really misleading. Not very accessible outside class. Tutorials for the InDesign labs are really helpful though and he offered extra credit at end of semester. I'd take him again, but wouldn't be in a hurry to do so
I honestly don't know why these reviews are so negative, Professor Kornegay is one of the funniest professors I've had and he knows so much about everything to do with visual communications. The labs were very easy and straight forward because he tells you exactly how to do them. The tests were straight up, if you go to class they are very easy.
Even though he doesn't take attendance if you want to pass you need to go and take notes. The exams are online and taken in class using your own laptops so make of that what you will... I don't know why he's graded so harshly on this site, I love him and he's very straight-forward about what to expect and how to do assignments. Definitely recommend
Do not take this professor. The class is unreasonably difficult. He rambles about topics unrelated to the course. He is unreasonable and unwilling to help students.
This class is hard af, but not necessarily because of the professor. I think j560 is gunna be brutal whichever prof you take.
if i could put tough grader 10 more times i would. He's lazy and his ta will grade you like she's an ivy league professor.
Previously wrote a good review until the semester went on. WORST professor ever. He is never available during office hours, will never email you back, and it doesn't matter how hard you try because he will give you a B or under on everything and never tell you why or how to fix it. HORRIBLE!!!!!
Kornegay is awesome! By far the most experienced and knowledgeable in the field, my favorite professor at USC. Super helpful if you ask for it, has really cool stories from working in the field, and got some great guest speakers.
Kornegay is knowledgable about viscom and lectures are bearable, but he is so unaccessible outside of class. He never responds to emails, EVER. Rarely holds office hours and gives students no outlet to try to do better in his class if they aren't doing well. He grades labs so hard and his tests are stupid hard. Take another professor if you can.
He's great. Come to class, take notes and follow the instructions exactly with the labs. You can tell he's very passionate about vis comm and I thought his lectures were interesting. The tests can cover a lot of material but very few questions.
This class was so hard. I took it online in the summer and we had 2 discussion posts and 3 tests. Not graded faily on the discussions. I followed the example and ended up with a C on the project. I emailed to ask for a breakdown of my grade and didn't get much help. I would not take this class this class online and would try to get a different prof
2 tests and a final and 2 assignments. Tests are easy if you take notes from the lecture videos and read all the articles. My laptop crashed midway through one of the exams and he reopened the test for me a day later to finish. He's very nice and very helpful. If you need this class for Journalism or Carolina Core I would definitely recommend him.
He knows his stuff and grades fairly! He does walkthroughs in class, so don't skip. You'll have to make up the assignments on your own if you skip, but he's willing to explain it if you ask. The 3 projects aren't bad, but you should put the effort in! The skills tests aren't hard if you pay attention in class. Just go to class and you'll be fine.
I love Kornegay, and you can tell he's passionate about viscomm. He's got some really cool stories too which keeps class interesting and fun. He does grade pretty harshly, so make sure you do the Indesign Labs thoroughly and do not wait until the last minute to do them. Tests also can be difficult, but go to class and study and you'll be fine.
Most of what you are expected is on the tests is not taught by him and instead you are expected to watch video modules online on your own time. Paying attention in class is pointless and if you don't watch the modules you're screwed. Very lazy of him that most of the material we need to learn is taught to us through a website outside of class.
Grades way too strictly for an intro vis comm class. Took points off one of my labs for my writing style because it wasn't up to his standards. Followed the rubric to a T and all the vis comm related criteria was perfect, so can't explain that one. Thinks his class is more important than it actually is.
Kornegay is such an awesome teacher! The class was super easy but I still learned a ton. If you pay attention in the class and take notes, you should be good on tests. He makes his lectures interesting. Would highly recommend.
Grades harshly, never or takes days to respond to emails. If you want to pass his class, show up.
Nice guy, understanding if you communicate. Semi-tough grader but if you do what you're supposed to do, you'll get a good grade. Clear with grading criteria during hands-on project lectures IN CLASS but doesn't upload assignment descriptions on blackboard so being in class is 100% necessary. Just show up, ask questions and you'll do good
His class consists of 4 tests and 3 labs. He doesn't teach the tools of InDesign well. Write down everything from the lecture. He will make test questions about the names of guest speakers that you wouldn't think to write down. He is quick to fail you on an assignment for minor errors. He does not have any concern about how you do in the class.
This professor is a nice guy but he is not very understanding, lectures are boring, grading is unreasonably harsh, and the tests are so random. You REALLY have to write down every word he says to get a good grade. The tests are in person on blackboard without a lockdown browser and there are only a few really easy labs.
He is a great teacher! If you go to class and show you care, you will do great. Very undestanding and gives group projects which I really liked. Would 100% recommend, one of my favorite teachers here.
