If you want an easier time, take a western civ. class with him. history of latin america and history of the pacific NW are a LOT more work and writing, but still fun. Vance is an absolutely amazing teacher. By far one of the best teachers I have ever had. He teaches history like he was there and he understands the nuances of history with out being bogged down by the numbers which lets face it are pointless. If you do the work you will pass, if you don't you won't pass. He grades hare but fair.

Do not be intimidated by him, he seems tough at first but the longer you are in class with him the more he grows on you. Do not get stressed out if he doesnt give you an exact deadline either, as long as you do the work by the end of the unit hes on, you will be fine. He gives you lots of freedom in this class and all take home test! Loved him!!

Youmans is by miles the most amazing prof Ive had. Amazing lectures and absolutely knows what hes talking about. Open to discussion as well. Lots of papers, but the class makes it worth it. I came away from this class with a new perspective on things. Im only sad that I cant keep taking classes with him.

Youman's is on another level. I really felt like my time was wasted in this class because he would go off topic and talk about everything inbetween. Gave a lot of unneeded assignments and claimed if you didn't turn it in you wouldn't pass. Didn't turn in my final and still passed so.

There is a book that you are told to buy, but I didnt read one page, and I passed with a 3.5. No tests, just papers, papers, and more papers. Very fun professor though. Made class interesting.

However, keep in mind that he doesn't use Canvas and you won't know your grade till end of quarter. Had 2 "pop quizzes" but weren't worth much. 3 papers throughout the quarter. Book is not a necessity, save your money.

He was a great teacher in terms of cool and likability, but the final and midterms were excessive. I nearly petitioned to get two weeks to write the final (I'm a try-hard so both my midterm and final were around 40 pages long in total). The midterm was 5 different prompt essays, and the final was 7, one of which you could choose your prompt.

I took Vance Youman's class back in the fall of 2016. This man single handily inspired me to major in history. His class at this level wasn't highly difficult. There was a lot of reading, and essay writing. There were however no multiple choice/fill in the blank type exams that you would take in class. Lectures are funny, inspired, and educational.

He's not very strong at keeping up with deadlines. He often posts things late or forgets to add a link to video. Overall, would not recommend. Easy a.

Also, don't be afraid to ask questions about the directions, because some of them can be suuuper confusing.

I don't mind reading so that is not why I would never take this professor again. He is very unorganized and does not have a set schedule. He randomly post assignments and sometimes at the end of the week when nothing else has been posted prior to that. If you like some organization don't take classes with this professor.

Deadlines are very flexible, so don't stress if he posts something and it is already past the due date. That is intentional on his part. I only read the book for specific assignments and passed with a 3.9.

DO NOT TAKE HIS ONLINE CLASS. He will post things out of the blue. Doesn't matter if its a paper or an exam. He is very disorganized. He lost track of his calendar and we had a paper, an exam, and a final project due at the very end of the quarter in a 5 day span. Exams are riddled with errors, and haven't been updated in 5+ years.
