Tricks students in multiple choice tests, grades unfairly, not friendly!
She seems to change her mind often.
She is indecisive and difficult. Not approachable and just outright mean
Stay away from this unclear and unfriendly prof
May come off snotty but very friendly when approached, willing to help students!
Very unclear, not friendly, STAY AWAY FROM!
She never has any idea what she's talking about or trying to convey.
Never has enough material to fill a whole class; thoughtful, tough grader
She does not teach! She grades only on the reading done outside of class and pick
very nice, always willing to help
SHE IS VERY UNCLEAR, AND DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH. SHE TALKS ABOUT INDIA.
Unclear. Does't fill up time. Doesn't really teach and her expectations are high
Unclear, unfriendly, uninspired teaching...beware!
You will leave this class very frusterated! Very unclear & tests are tricky!
Picks favorites, unorganized, unprepared lectures, disrespectful, unfair grader.
she is a great resource for writing but tests are very vague in media & society
you will feel unity in the class as you band together over your mutual hate
You will want your money back after this class, as well as a deserving grade!!!
doesn't care about you, doesn't like you; gives undeserved grades
Exc. professor for the serious writer. You will be better writer after her class
Has no idea what she's trying to convey. Cant speak clear English. Very rude!!
Very wishy-washy and does not specify well.
i'd rather fight a rabid bear than having to be in this class
Very hard to understand, but willing to help students
I like her but she can be very vague. The class is kind of challenging
Good writers will do well. She is nice, intelligent, and helpful.
i think she was a hard teacher to understand, and you dont learn anything at all
Difficult content, but good Prof. Would recommend.
Class would fall asleep, very boring, getting teeth pulled is more exciting
She's a good prof and I've learned a lot. It's hard to understand her at first.

You shouldn't be in this class if you're not serious about english/journalism
Very hard to understand...unclear, incredibly boring lectures
Nice and fun!
Very good teacher. Very helpful. You must work hard in her class.

boring lectures in the agitating, hair-pulling way, seems to favor female students, near impossible to understand sometimes
I think this is a difficult class to teach, and professor magal does a fine job with it. Her accent takes a little getting used to, but she really knows her stuff. The only problem is she doesn't take a lot of time to get to know students individually.
She does not respond to e-mail so don't bother getting ahold of her that way. Class is boring. Don't bother taking unless you want to prusue journalism.
She is a very interesting professor and was very flexible with the schedule. If you read and write a little bit, you get all of the points. She gives you the questions for the exams too!
Easiest CJR class I've ever taken. Kiss butt in there and you'll be fine. She likes the kids who ask questions and talk alot. Show up once in a while, do the writings and you'll be all set.
The topics are interesting. Generally, she leads a good discussion in class. She likes people who participate in discussion. Her grading seems a bit arbitrary. Not too bad
This lady is awful! Cancels class, grades terribly hard and makes the final worth way too much. She never answers email and is not passionate about what she does.
Excellent professor, very interesting class material. It helps to participate.......
She is extremely scatter brained, usually unprepared, and she never remembered which class she was there for. She's extremely arrogant and has no passion for teaching. On top of all, her grading makes it impossible for most to do well, talented or not.
EXTREMELY boring class, very vague about assignments. Don't try asking questions because she'll won't answer it, she'll just answer some random question that she made up in her head. Wants you to just regurgitate the EXACT words from the book/lectures on tests otherwise you will get marked down.
OK, she knows her stuff and you can learn a lot from her if you pay attention and participate in class. Some of the readings are dry but she does her best to explain them. Large group project at the end of semester and 3 tests total. Final is not cumulative. I liked her and the class. But I talk.
Her 3 tests consist of ONLY essay questions. That makes her grading system suck. Has no homework to help your grade, one paper. Hence, don't take if you're bad at essay questions. Embarassed me in front of some class members (she could have sent me an email/pulled me aside after class). Watch out.
NOT BAD! Grade=3 essay tests, and 1 group project. Outlines test Qs and reviews. Class can be boring, so I read the material as she talked about it. Take notes, offer your opinion, DO the study guide, and you'll be FINE! Very approachable..often confused by student's q's. Not a bad class at all.
I did bad on the first test, then she explained what she wanted and i did fine after that. She handed the test out before our second exam and the final was a take home. It was an easy enough class and she grades pretty easily too.
She is a nice lady and will try to answer questions but many times she becomes lost in her own explanations and very rarely did her answers help me at all. Just try to actually read what she assigns and take notes, you'll do okay.
Adorable lady, but could do a little better with the class. I got a much lower grade then I was expecting. Just study a lot before the exams and do the readings more then once (they're fairly easy) and you should be fine.
lazy. she doesn't want to grade papers so she has your peers do it. she doesn't want to grade tests so she cancels them. there isn't enough work to be graded! i'm a senior in this sophomore class i forgot to take and did terrible!
The class was okay. A little boring, but she did try to make us understand the readings that we were required to read. We did a lot of class discussions and that helped me understand better. She's not overly enthusiastic to listen to, but not impossible. She's do-able.
The work is easy, the class discussions are drawn out, and her grading is out in left field.
If you put in effort, she will acknowledge that and reward you for it.
If you are a PR, MKT or ADV major, try not to take this course with this professor. Assigned readings only presented negative aspects of capitalism. Homework was graded but not returned so there was no feedback. Midterm was the only assignment returned but comments were illegible.
Class was fun and interesting. Always got out early. As long as you ask for help she's wonderful in helping you improve your grade. Has a lot of experience and is very understanding. She's a really cool person.
Class is pretty unorganized. She lets you out early quite a bit. There are only 4 grades: 3 Tests (including final; 2 of them were take-home) and a group presentation. If you show up to class often and talk every once and a while she will notice and give you participation points. Class is pretty boring but won't cause you a lot of work or worry.
Not a bad professor at all. Very unclear of her expectations in the beginning so make sure you are very thorough on your test answers. Very nice, flexible, and knowledgable.
she was decent. i guess she was just sort of unclear of what she expected from us.
Very Qualified for teaching Newsreporting, but she's so unclear. There are no guidelines for assignments and good luck reading the comments. She's nice and helpful, but vague. Tells students that everything is good, but then we'd get an 8/10. No clear grading scale as to what makes an "A" article.
Aviod for this class. Essay tests- no clear grading guidlelines. Not enough work to be graded, 3 tests and one group projects.
She means well, but she just shouldn't be a professor. The class is pretty much an opinion class, but at the end of class discussion, she wants you to think only her way. If you don't, and you show that on the test, she makes comments like "Remember the class discussion?" Just find out what her opinion is and write that down on the test.
This Prof is wishy-washy. I never knew what she wanted on essay tests and all we did was have class discussions.
This Prof, is very wishy washy, you will only do well in her class if you agree with her political views. Her teaching style is odd and she is VERY un clear as to what she wants. The readings are rediculous and should only be read by those who want to obatin a job in a liberal world. She gave me a bad grade simply because i gave her my opinions in
This is one of the best journalism professors at GVSU. She is always there for you when you need her the most. She responds to students e-mails very quickly. It is not true she wants you to the way she does. Those students who took her classes and did not enyoj them.... OH well that just means they have no ideas what journalism is all about.
AVOID THIS CLASS!
Knows the topic she is teaching well. She is also clear and easy to follow along if you pay attention. As long as you are taking notes you m shoul dend up with an A. Some of the material provided by her could be a bit hard, but if you are alert in the classroom don't worry. If you really want to know more about COM Vandan Magal is a way to go.
Vandana is professor with dignity, integrity and respect. She loves her students as if thy're her children. No matter for what class you take her you will not regred it at ALL. She is everything a professor should be all about: helping STUDENTS. IF you end up taking her you will have lots of fun. For those of you who are GRADE hunters should do fin
Very nice lady and helpful too, but be ready the liberal slant...
Very easy going and knowledgeable about the topic. Doesn't ask too much out of students, but class discussions are still interesting. Grades tough on the take home exams, but just read the book and don't skip and you'll be fine.
For those who truly care an belive in educating themselves Vandana is a way to go. She is more than a professor. She is your friend. Extremelly knowledgeble lady. One of the best prefesors that GVSU has. No wonder she is got TEaching Excellence Award. SUPER AWESOME. The best Prof I ever had at GVSU
Don't bother with the book if you aren't going to read it. As long as you know the powerpoints she posts/ half listened in class you'll ace the exams. Easy grader and flexible with homework assignments. Put effort into the presentation because she is more critical of that.
Boring material and hard to making it exciting. Prof is nice but doesn't spice the class up at all. Tests were easy we could use notes and she gave out a study guide. Reading was hard and long.
I've had this prof for other classes, and while it's not very exciting, it's not hard. I'm not a CJR major, but enjoyed the class. Work wasn't difficult, and she encourages open discussion. Great Prof!!
Can seem mean at times, but she's nice & approachable. Readings are tough. Easy grader with essays. Class is boring. She'll tear you apart with questions after a presentation.
Awesome Professor. Expects you to learn the stuff though. Aims for big concepts, and ability to tie them into real world applications. I use Global Communication ideas in other classes all the time, so the class is useful.
She is awful. She never responds to a single email. She also missed 3 class periods (that were 6-9's) but made us still attend. Her powerpoints are boring and she is difficult to communicate with. She acts like students are an inconvenience to her and her time. The group presentation is graded the hardest out of all of your assignments.
I learned a lot about the history & motives of journalism in this class - interesting class. The prof expects students to be engaged & if you're not, you may not do very well in this class. Do the readings, assignments & speak up in class & you'll do fine. She has a lot of real life experience & you can learn a lot from her if you choose.
Love this teacher! I was in a class of 12 and she made class very fun and personal. She encouraged office visits and tells you that she won't reply via email. Mostly everything must be done in person. She has a very good teaching method where everything is conversational and relatable. Would definitely take her class again!
She missed 2 classes and I took it during the 6 week summer semester. Very boring discussions and lectures. Tough grader on exams and presentations. Not at all helpful outside of class.
This is the second time I had this professor and it was basically the same as my last class with her. All about powerpoints and I already had prior knowledge about this subject so i didn't really learn anything from her. All the exams are long essays and if you do take this class I suggest you take COM 220 with this class b/c it definitely helps.
She is very unorganized in her teaching method. She would say something was homework, but it wasn't. She changed the portfolio due date several times to the point that class e-mails were sent out once a week asking when things were due. She also is not very easy to understand. The exams are huge essays in which she grades fairly harshly.
Dr. V is very informative on the world of journalism, but she can be unclear about the homework and her expectations from students. This is the second time I have had her. She does not use email or blackboard very much, so that can be a communication problem if you have questions. Overall, an okay professor who has experience in the field.
Before you think about signing up for her classes know that she is Indian, has a heavy accent, and can be difficult to understand. The book was $65 and is dense & very hard to read. She takes forever to get points across. She's very unorganized. Makes you uncomfirtably step out of your comfort zone with unreasonable projects. Avoid her if you can.
Dr. V is very knowledgeable. VERY knowledgeable. However it seems her busy schedule takes precedence to the class. This class was a 6-9 and she showed up late almost every time. She gives you random assignments and acts as if they were super clear and concise. That is never the case. She really means well but she misses the mark.
Sometimes confusing on what she wants and a pretty boring lecturer, but you can get through it.
Super nice, she wasn't as clear as she thought she was. Our final short story she said it could be a one to three pages, then later she said it should be no less than 10 and gave no direct feedback on our drafts. Random 4 page assignment bc she thought no one was doing the readings. Allowed 1 absence, anymore it would 25% of your grade each time.
Dr. Magal is a great professor and cares about the her students, but she seems to not be very organized. She tends to forget when assignments are due (not the worst thing) and she also forgets how she described the assignments to students which can lead to a lot of lost points.
I enjoyed her class. She is very nice and caring. Her class is not hard, just be sure to participate. The only thing that is a bit complex is her test - they are very structured and shes a tough grader. But overall the class was laid back with not a lot of assignments.
My issue with this class is that the lectures were a bit all over the place. I did not enjoy them. But on the upside, just make sure you read the textbook and the Powerpoints that she makes. Once you take notes on those two things, and participate in her class, you should be completely fine.
Her announcements are always unclear or missing important details, so you never know what's due or when. She also takes off points for no clear reason, even after you've done all the work. It's really frustrating. Save yourself the trouble and pick a different professor.
Made an assignment due before the class semester even started.
