This is a hard class, but if you can actually make it to lectures you should do fine on the tests. She adds lots of extra points to tests afterwards to raise everyone's grades. Overall, I find the class fairly pleasant to get through.
Go to lecture, read the books, do the homework, and you still won't have any idea where her test questions are coming from. She does push the grading scale down at the end of the semester. It's passable but you have to be prepared to do a lot of work.
Make sure to buy the book, and go to class your lost if you don't, she likes when you go to office hours she'll be more lienant with your grade if you do
Great teacher. Very interested in helping students succeed. Tests are difficult but she's a fair grader. She'll give you an education, but you definitely have to do your part too.
Have to go to class and pay attention. Her tests are hard, but she adds lots of points afterwards to bring up grades. Be sure to talk to her and go to her office hours, she will be more lenient on your grade.
Do yourself a favor and don't take this class! Her tests are ridiculous and her lectures are boring and irrelevant to the tests. Online homework and she is available in her office all the time but her class is just to difficult.
Her test questions are ambiguous but she grades fair. Need a good background in econ. If you're a health major you might want to take another class, econ majors should be okay.
teacher is boring. class is boring. tests do not come out of the lecture or book.
really boring lectures hard to stay awake but really good teacher explains clear the material but her test are kind of confusing
I have to admit it is hard to adjust to Econ in the first place but she makes the transition as easy as possible. Van Nee is a supurb teacher. Extremely helpful, fair, and willing to answer any questions. If your going to go through Econ you might as well go through it with her.
BORING, you think you are doing bad the whole semester but she curves tests and grades a lot. I got C's and D's on all my tests and missed a lot of homework and still managed to get a 74% which was a B - TESTS ARE FRUSTRATING, take it if you dont want to go to class and receive a C or B

The marginal costs are much greater than the marginal benefits if you take her class. Avoid her if you can! She had no problems giving Fs and Ds. She has the bad habit of looking down at nearly everyone--she behaves this way with great joy. Her lectures can force people into deep sleep. Her test questions force you to come up with stupid answers.
She is a cool teacher, as long as you attend the class and copy everything she has the board or powerpoint... you should be fine. Oh, she also curves too
Do yourself a favor and don't take her! She seems cool and all in class, and you understand whats going on in class, but tests screw you!!
Very good teacher but very hard subject. Lectures were very boring, understand lectures but was confused when it came down to do the aplia assignments. The study guides that she post for the test have little or no relations to the tests. The test is very hard, she rewords the test so that all the answers sounds correct. She is very nice, but i woul
hard to undertand
Like most students posted, she is very picky in grading homework assignments. In fact, the first test there were questions that were pertain to materials not explained well in class. She expects clarity from students but her lectures are not well presented and lack clarity and organization.
Great Teacher. Explains perfectly. She will help in/out of class. Go to class do okay. Read and you do better. Ask for an explanation of the concepts and you will understand. She moves at nice steady pace but willing to stop and explain any concepts that you did not grasp. Really a nice caring professor so dont let her first impression intimidate
Overall in my opinion, she doesn't really care who passes her classes or not. Her lectures are long and dull.
This class was rediculous! Her lectures are so confusing and she does not prepare you at all for the exams. I studied so hard for this class and still got a B+. Also the exams are extremely hard!
Her lectures aren't too bad and she does help anyone who asks for it, but her tests are the worst. Super hard!! I wouldn't recomend her at all.
Her methods of teachings are hard. Her tests are so complicated. I would not recommend her for students who do not have a good understanding of economics. This class will eat you up.
Good professor overall. Tries to make class interesting but it isn't the most interesting class. She is available to help often and is flexible. She knows what she is talking about and makes the material learnable.
Dry Humor. Great teacher. If you do what she asks for you will have an A no problem. She knows her material, and is fair on grading.
She is ok. but not really recommended.
HORRIBLE! She could not care less if you do well. Her lectures have nothing to do with the exams and she is one of the toughest most nitpicky graders I have ever had. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER! She is not helpful, she is boring, and her lectures are vague.
okay teacher. for some reason her examples had nothing to do with the test so you have to read the text to pass the tests. 3 mid terms & one gets dropped. one final. midterms are two part online & in class. has homework which saved my ass. passed w/ "B" b/c of homework & lots of extra credit; bombed all the tests lol.
Class is boring. She's weird, and what she teaches in class has to do nothing with the test. Basically you have to read the book in order to pass the online test.
she is horrible! she seems like she is a great professor until you do the assignments, read the book, and the exam. Nothing that she teaches correlates well with of the material needed for the exams
hey i think she is really cool and nice. she is very helpful and wants you to ask questions if you need to. most of the tests and homework are online and she gives you the opportunity to do extra credit its not even hard. there are two in class write out tests easy put anything on it and you are sure to get points. i liked it book good to have
She's very nice, and her lectures seem to be thorough. However, homework (online) exams (partially online, partially in class) do not go along with the lectures. It was a very difficult subject, and she made it much more complicated & difficult to obtain a good grade than necessary.
She is a very nice teacher. Really likes talking about economics but somehow the homework doesn't correlate well with what she's talking about in class. Better study hard and ask questions for help when needed.
OMG she is really hard!! Aviod her if u can her tests are extremely hard nd her lectures done make sense. I'm an A student nd i really struggled in her class plus the hw is all online very hard its just math nd graphs. I wouldnt advise her at all, but she is nice though.
Hated the class if it was not for the quizzes where you can use your book i would have prob failed. class was really boring. its hard
I was a 4.0 Student until I took this class. Her lectures are easy to understand but do not relate to the textbook. When you take the test, It does not relate to anything you have learned. She makes this class way more complicated than need be. Be ready to endure one of the hardest classes you will ever take at state. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!
She really loves to talk about economics. Her lectures are understandable but her tests are a bit different from what she teaches. You have to teach yourself and ask for help. The good thing about help is that she's always willing to help you and answer all your questions. good luck if you happen to have her class.
econ 40, i personally don't recommend this class at all period.
Her tests seem like they were made up randomly. Same with homework all online. Take a different teacher if you can!!! you can take notes and study a good amount and the test could still be stuff you have never seen. Also two out of three essays are mandatory. Some extra credit, didn't help much. Two exams one final. Also she does take role.
I agree with the last reviewer. Her tests are random, covering foreign material she didn't cover in class. She tends to go on rants until the class ends, leaving the student confused and stressed. The Aplia assignments are not related to the textbook or her material. I would suggest you take another teacher who can properly break down Economics.
Very Very Confusing Class!
DO NOT TAKE HER. I get very good grades, and I have never worked so hard in a class and I BARELY got a C. Nothing makes sense. Between her lectures, which are all graphs, Aplia, textbook, and her tests..they are all different. Spent 5 hours trying to do a 're-do exam' using all resources, and still did not get a 75%.
Nice person and really wants her student to learn something. However, materials thought in class were not very much related to the textbook. To score well in exams u have to know every single detail to get u to the answer. so the best way is to study everything. e-text is enough, pay attention and make notes in class.
She wasn't very easy, but she did give several opportunities for extra credit and graded on a curve.
She was a great teacher do good on the homework. Also do all the extra credit she lets you do fix its on the tests. So if you do bad you can really improve your grade. She wants you to learn it not just try to pass the class. She was a great teacher. Aplia was more confusing then class she makes it more clear, I just didn't like aplia.
She does the best she can with a difficult subject. I don't think anybody in class knew what was going on, but she seemed to expect that. The Aplia homework was a nightmare but the tests weren't that bad. Her teaching is well paced and allows for questions, but the confusion was deep enough in my class to preclude any questions. Microecon is hard.
Econ is hard enough and she does not make it more understandable at all. Students ask her questions and she can't even answer them. take another instructor is possible. tests and hw are irrelevant to material covered in class.
What ever you do don't take this class what you cover in class has nothing to do with whats on the textbook or on the homework. I actually liked econ until i took it this class. She makes no sense what so ever and she answers questions with another question. Even if its the only open class don't take it. There is a reason its the only one open.
Hard class and ok teacher. I took her last sem and looking back, I learned a lot that helped me in ECON 50. She will frustrate you and her Aplia homework is terrible but you will get meaningful notes. You also do 3 short analyses which she grades harshly. She lectures by drawing the graphs on the board. She must curve grades because I got an A.
She replies back to emails very fast and is very helpful in her office hours. People are being too harsh. It's called studying fellas. Show her you study and study hard and she'll help you.
She was very unclear, and didn't explain how she would get her answers. I had to drop it.
Uh, I have this professor right now and already she does not make sense. I read first chapter before attending class and it's uncorrelated. I can see all the question marks on everyone's head. She doesn't explain things thoroughly and doesn't clarify what economics is, I felt like getting up to teach. Just read the text, forget her.
Dr. V was a great professor, her explanations and take on the subject really opened my eyes to the actual concept of Microeconomics. She is on my favorites list at CSUF.
Hardest professor by far I've ever taken. 3 exams 2 worth 30%, lowest 10%, hwk 20%, do the extra credit, 10% 2 essay out of 3. She grades her essay really hard. Shes a DR so it has to be ELITE or you'll get a D or C. NO STUDY GUIDE GIVEN!!!! ALERT ALERT ALERT!!! TRY TO AVOID THIS PROFESSOR... You'll learn nothing but graphs. READ TO PASS
Very hard class. Hard professor. Completing her homework was literally a full-time job. 30+ hours per week (not exaggerating). You really need to work to understand because you will lose her in class. Be prepared to read and teach yourself.
She is a good teacher. Just read the book and you will be fine. She grades her tests pretty easy. She is not hard that is only for the students that don't read or ask questions. I managed an A in the class and i didnt feel that this class took up all my time. If anything I spent a total of 2 hours a week doing the homework and reading. Get the book!
I don't understand why everyone is saying to avoid taking her class. I have an A in the class so far and I took this class knowing nothing about economics. Your grade is based on 4 exams, 2 short papers and the online homework. As long as you attend lecture and read the book, you'll pass easily. She's there if you need help too. Great professor!
Test are hard. She will answer all questions, but she will only go over basics. Do not expect test material to be covered in class. How she teaches is wonderful, and makes this class look very easy, but be careful, and study for test. Even the book material will not be on test. You have to think outside the box. Do everything, and you will pass.
Dr. Van Vleck lacks a good method of transmitting the information to her students. She is kind and intelligent, yet she is not the best instructor for the subject. You will struggle in this course, being one of the hardest classes you can possibly take in the Econ department. Pass it the first time; you'll be proud regardless of the outcome.
4exams, 2papers, and homework. She is there for you when you are stuck! Ask lots of questions during class!
Dr. Van Vleck lacks a clear, helpful, and transmitting course that provides meaningful information for students. The course did not have a structure or objectives that will be of life long use for students. Economics requires thought, analysis, and much importantly, application. The course lacks many of these components, as it is usual of Dr. V.
Her tests are difficult. Ask questions if you don't understand, or else you'll bomb the exams. Read the textbook. She grades very hard on the GEWRs. If you chronically use your cell phone in class, you'll annoy her. As long as she see's you paying attention and participating, then she's willing to help.
1. Her lectures are nothing but GRAPHS GRAPH!!! 2. Read the book 3. Test: 2 parts- Part 1 is in class and only problem solving and short answer & part 2 is online multiple choice 4. she gives SI leader all the information you need to know for ECON but tells them to only give students some of the information! AVOID HER AT ALL COST!!!
although there is a lot of homework and reading, I found that if you actually take the time to go to office hours and ask questions, she will make things a bit easier. Just takes some patience and practice
Her class is not an easy A, but it is college and you should expect to put in a decent amount of work if you want to earn a passing grade. Read the chapters and take notes prior to class, this way you can ask question sin her lecture. 2 papers (grades hard), 4 exams (online m.c., in class short answer), except final in class. STUDY key concepts.
If you pay attention and participate, you earn her respect. If you ask for help or ask questions, she tries her best to explain it. Overall, great teacher. Just do the work.
This class is not hard she just doesnt give you good study material for the test. She goes over the same things in 2-3 classes and does the same exact problems and then she goes in more depth when you don't even need it. All she needs is to show us what we need. She uses inquisitive which does help.
She goes over the same things in 2-3 classes and does the same exact problems and then she goes in more depth when you don't even need it. Her study guide doesn't work well. Also, she doesn't give much extra credit.
Her lectures are easy to understand but how can you ask someone a question when you don't even know where to ask because you think you already get what's going on and I think that's the problem that most students have.
Wishes she offers more extra credit. Study guides could be fixed up a bit. She should ask for a volunteer to draw and label graphs to see at least someone has an understanding after she shows us how to do it or have groups with a whiteboard and count on 3 show your board of what your group thinks the answer is and get extra.c that way
Van Vleck is a good teacher but its a tough subject/class. If you have any questions she is always willing to answer. I highly recommend going to class with questions because she always asks if anyone has questions before she begins lecture. I attended S.I. sessions I highly recommend going to them because it is the reason I was successful.
Van Vleck is a really educated and fun teacher in a way but the way she runs her class is very frustrating, homework every class. You pretty much learn micro on your own and she teaches only about %20 of what you learn in the class. Very hard on grading and asks for very specific answers on exams.
Dr. V is a great professor. Challenging course w graphs. In order to be successful you must really understand the material. READ. ASK QUESTIONS. 3 Exams are worth 30% in class free response(2 questions) & 70% online test(35 ques.). Go to Supplemental Instruction on the regular & do not fall behind!! Fri class usually online. Final MC in class.
Awful! She is very bland and makes focusing very difficult. Doesnt do a very good job at explaining topics. This makes the course difficult if you dont have a good grasp on economics.
Dr. V is a good professor. You can earn an A if youre a hard worker. The class is mainly online, theres barely any in class meetings. I learned most of the material on my own, so if you have a hard time learning on your own I wouldnt recommend this class. If you do your work youll be fine. She can be confusing at times, but shes a good prof.
Made the only ECON 100A class heavily online. People like me who prefers traditional lecture struggled and I cried before every exam. I got a B in the class and I am a 4.0 student before taking that class. Please reconsider your teaching methods.
Dr. V is a very tough professor. You must do an HW Logbook, discussion board, and journal entry every week. She grades these assignments tough. She made the only Econ100A course offered heavily online. This is a class that needs to have heavy in-person interaction to get a good grade. Tests are free-response and tough. Be ready to apply algebra.
This class was difficult and consists of reading responses, a big group project, journal entries, and voice threads. If you don't know much on this topic you will definitely struggle. However, she is very intelligent and extremely accessible. Try to not slack off, the book is absolutely needed, and very difficult to read. Good luck.
Admittedly very intelligent and knowledgeable about economics, but an extremely tough grader that assigns a lot of homework. Should you stray even slightly from what she wants, she will punish you harshly in terms of points. If you want to get your money's worth, then sign up. However, if you want some breathing room whilst learning, then don't.
Dr. Van Vleck is the hardest professor in the Econ department. The homework takes about 5-6 hours. The stuff in the textbook and what she goes over in class is never on the tests. Tests are full-on free-response and she wants graphs for everything. I put soo much effort into this class and even read the whole textbook, I still didn't get an A.
This is a VERY tough class. The most difficult Econ class at Fresno State. Get a lot of points from your homework and the professor is VERY strict on grades for it. However, she is more lineate on the exams. Go to her lectures (if in person) or watch all of her lectures and take notes! Get ready for algebra. Take ECON 123 before this class.
I ended up dropping her class VERY quickly. Within the first week the amount of homework she assigned was insane and on top of that her teaching style made no sense to me. I took the course with her online and the lectures were composed of a bunch of mini videos that made NO sense. Save yourself the effort and dont take this class.
tbh don't take this class, freshmen plz I'm telling you this for your own good she's a tough grader, I suggest getting another class besides this one.
Unless you hate yourself, don't take this class. I just got super unlucky with my professor options.
despite what others say about professor V, I actually found her quite easy. yes she's a tough grader with high expectations, but she is always happy to help you. there's a hw assignment every week, discussion board every 2 weeks and writing assignment every 3 weeks. its not a CRAZY amount of work like others say, reasonable and not impossible to do
Dr. V's quizzes are tough, and you do not want to fall behind. She is a great teacher, but her quizzes often cover material at a depth that only the textbook reaches. You will have to read the textbook in order to pass the class. It is possible to do well in this class if you pay attention and ask lots of questions. This class may be challenging.
Horrible professor
Expects you to remember things that she mentioned in her class from months ago and unclear instructions. I am a pretty average straight A student and this was an easy class made hard by the professor. Tough grader and seems well knowledgable about the topic but not fit to teach. I struggled more in this class than most any others.
She has office hours and is willing to work with students. Attendance is mandatory has she give lecture notes to complete and turn in. Her lectures at times may be very confusing but there is a lot of extra credit and one test is dropped. I recommend using office hour videos and Principles of Microeconomics videos offered by MRU to study.
Best teacher Ive ever had, I dont know why her reviews are so bad. Shes a great professor and lecturer it was light amount of homework and so much extra credit. Shes a hard grader on tests but theyre what you do in class and based off of the class notes which she prints out and you follow along with her whiteboard to do it and is an easy grade.
Took this class in Fall 24'. She had office hours and always ensured you can ask questions. She was alright. She had daily sheets that you could use on tests. Reading the textbook and inquizitive were extra credit assignments but highly suggest doing them. The tests are 3 questions only but all of them were open ended. The Final is multiple choice.
Dr. V is a kind, accessible, and flexible professor. Attendance is required if you want points for daily sheets. If she sees you actively put effort into the class and assignments, you will most definitely pass the class. I got average grades (70s range on tests) and somehow got an A. She is kind, you have to reach out and ask questions.
The classe is quite difficult, and sometimes you get lost because she provides daily sheets every class, which don't help as much as a study guide would. These daily sheets are graded, so you need to write more than what is asked, otherwise, your score can drop significantly. She is always willing to help, but the class itself is hard to understand.
She had daily sheets so if you missed class you miss those points. If you ever needed more help her office hours were always helpful. Her tests are all MCQ and you have an option to get back at most 10 points for explaining one of them in writing. Her final wasn't as bad as the unit tests. There are about 5 essays but they all build on each other.
