Ms. Coffelt is an incredibly good teacher. She is very understanding of her students and their schedules. I don't attend her office hours, but each time I walk past her office in the building she is helping a student adamantly. You will buy a Cengage+ account for the class, and if you can do the webassigns, you will be golden for the exam.
Not a good teacher at all. Do not take her if you want to pass. Very nice, good office hours, but tests are completely different from the homework and the textbook.
Ms. Coffelt is a very unfair and inconsistent grader. Calculus is a subject where there is often multiple ways to solve a problem, but in Ms Coffelt's class, there is only one right way: her way. She is a big believer in partial credit and will count off for anything and everything if it is not to her liking. Do not, I repeat, do not take her class
I found her grading inconsistent, and the quizzes and tests she gave the class were often more involved than what was covered in lecture or assigned as hw. The most frustrating thing is that she has specific method/notation preferences that are prioritized over solving a problem correctly/efficiently. I expect to make an A- or B+ in this class.
Professor Coffelt is very kind, but her class was extremely difficult for me. I did the webassign homework assignments and test reviews in the book, and I still did not succeed in the class. She is a VERY tough grader. I did not visit office hours, but if you take her, I would highly recommend it.
Professor Coffelt is an excellent teacher because she is thorough and CONCISE! Plus, she's really nice! Yes, the material is pretty difficult, BUT you're probably going to have to take MATH 150 at some point, so if you get Coffelt, consider yourself lucky! For a good grade: Go to class (she'll notice! :) ), do the work, and go to the SI sessions!
Weekly recitation assignments and quizzes are doable and are very important to your grade... because the exams are hard. Even with lots of studying, the free response will kill your grade. If it's not 100% the way she likes it, it's wrong. Is nitpicky for no reason. Made D's on first two exams so far with lots of studying. DON'T TAKE HER!!
She was incredibly rude & had no idea how to teach. I never understood anything & her notes did not relate to the tests at all. The way she graded was ridiculous, I had 20 points taken off a quiz because I didn't capitalize x on one problem. Even if you get the right answer but don't do it EXACTLY like she wants it you will fail.
Vanessa Coffelt was an excellent professor for Math 147. Her expertise in mathematics and desire for her students to master the material was made evident in her clearly delineated objectives, thorough online lectures, and accessible office hours, which were very welcoming and respectful. Exceptional person and professor.
I just took her final. 20 minutes into the 2 hour test a girls alarm went off and Ms. Coffelt made her turn in her test. She failed that kid, making her retake the class and didnt bat an eye. Just know before you take that she is tough and doesnt have any compassion. Anyways even if you dont go to class, make sure you keep up with the notes.
The hardest part about this course wasn't the homework or tests, it was figuring out how she graded everything. She is a very specific grader and counts off points for doing things any way other than what she taught. Quizzes and recitation assignments are insanely important to save your exam grades. Not a good prof for those who struggle with math.
I thought she was a good teacher. She gives you so many sources to get the information you need and tells you upfront that she is a tough grader so if you pay attention and learn her grading style you will be fine. Lots of weekly assignments that can help your grade. She offered extra credit on one of the tests and the final which was very helpful.
For a class that is solely lecture-based, it's a real battle to focus and understand what she's actually talking about. Precal really isn't that hard, but she teaches using very technical terms rather than breaking concepts down. Regardless, she gives plenty of examples and test questions were never too surprising. Too much effort for precal though
Coffelt is a good professor, but makes you work for ur grade! She assigns a lot of homework NOT for a grade, but if you don't do it you won't do good in the class. Test & quizzes are fair & from hw. She can be a tough grader because will mark off on little details. She has office hours almost every day and always willing to help you understand.
I thought she was a good prof and I did fine in the class but that's only because I took Calc AB in high school. I thought it was going to be an easy A, but there was alot of work- recitation assignment and quizzes every week. stay on top of your work and do not skip class!!!!
She is horrible. She takes points off for everything, even when points should not be taken off. She does all her work in dumb ways that are way more confusing than a simple explanation. She tries to get you to do bad on the tests.
She's a very nice lady, but a horrible teacher. She talks fast and doesn't explain anything in depth at all. Her test are very difficult and nothing like the lecture, I recommend taking someone who will help you better understand instead of just speeding through the lecture. Also very boring class.
Boring voice. Can not pay attention to a word she says. In class assignments screwed me over bc I didn't go to class bc its an 8 am and not hard but she haaaaaaas to give us weekly in class work so you have to go. pain in the butt
Possibly the worst teacher of the subject of math Ive ever had in my life. Never goes into detail on methods of problem solving and usually doesnt even finish explaining how to solve a problem because she wants to get through too much material in one class. Homework is every week and nothing like the lecture material. Find another professor.
Tests are almost nothing like what's explained in the lecture. Reviews are overwhelming but somewhat help. She is very picky as to how you show your work on free-response portions of the tests. If you do not use a method you've learned in class or write your answers very specifically she will count it wrong.
Ms. Coffelt is a good teacher! Her lectures are hard to sit through sometimes but she is very clear in what she wants. Tests were easy as long as you study and make sure you can do all the problems on the review.
The people who give her bad reviews are the people who either don't go to class or they don't pay attention in class. She does make you work for your grade but this class is by no means an impossible class to get an A in. Do the homework, show up to class, do the reviews before exams and you will be fine.
She was a very nice lady but her class was pretty difficult. I didn't miss one class and still struggled more than I should have. When I took pre-cal in high school I got an A+ and will not be making an A this semester. The reviews weren't similar to the tests and she took off useless points that other teachers weren't taking points off for.
Classes are all lectures, but there are videos and notes on eCampus so if you miss class it's not a big deal. I have always been strong in math and this class was very difficult for me. She is very knowledgeable but I didn't learn well from her. She has lots of office hours which help, but I definitely recommend establishing a tutor.
Please do not let the negative reviews on this page keep you from taking this class. Professor Coffelt is an amazing professor! She knows her stuff and will make sure that you do too. Her tests are hard, but she makes it so easy to understand if you just put in a little effort. She is the best professor to take for this class.
The class isn't hard but the way she grades makes it difficult to get an A. Prof is very helpful when it comes to resources and posts lectures and keys online. The material is fairly simple but her lectures can be hard to sit through and she is looking for very specific answers. Overall, I would say take her but be prepared to put some work in.
Assignments given in class so don't skip. Coffelt is very kind and cares about her students. I didn't do well, but I'm horrible at math and skipped class more than I should have. If I would have put more effort in, I would have done better because she is very smart and a good teacher!
Tests are HARD. Get ready for that. She is a kind professor, lectures are just very very loaded with information and it can be hard to keep up.
Professor Coffelt was a nice lady but it was very hard to learn in her class. Lectures were monotonous and she didn't always engage the class. Tests were hard and there was a lot of homework (not hard). She was, though, very accessible outside of class. One tip would be to sit in the front row of her class as it is often very big.
Prof Coffelt is truly an awesome professor. She is super caring, is willing to help you, and is super flexible as long as you reach out. I took precalc in highschool so I found that I did not need to study that much; however, expect to put in the work if math isn't your strong suit.
If you've taken pcal or AP Calc in HS, this class should be fine. Dr. Coffelt posts many videos to help on homework, and is easy to get in contact with. There is HW, but you have enough time to do it. The regular tests were doable, but the final was very HARD. She gave our class a ten point bonus, or I would of gotten a B in the class.
I had a really hard time in this course. I generally struggle with math. Ms. Coffelt did her best to help me. I advise you to take her if you need MATH 140. She is more caring than other teachers and will help you anytime you walk into her office. Her tests aren't a breeze, but not near as tough as some of the teachers in our math department.
Since the whole COVID-19 happened, she has been more understanding to all her students. Although there lectures can be heavy and theres a lot of homework, she is always willing to help you in class and in office hours. She is straight up when you ask her a question. At the end, if she knows you care she will too, shell do her best to make you pass.
The math is easy and most people will be familiar with it, but that makes sitting through lectures pretty boring. In-class assignments make attendance mandatory. Most annoying thing is the tests (instead of just solving problems you have to label everything and do a lot of extra work. Coffelt seems to be the nicest math proffessor though.
Coffelt was challenging, but reasonable. She drops your lowest exam which is replaced by the final. Overall If you take her class, do the homework!!! yes, its 10% of the grade, but at the end, that 10% makes a difference! Reviews are helpful as well as lecture videos, but that doesn't mean you can skip lecture! Overall would recommend!
I indicated I would take her again, which I definitely would. She is a really good professor who knows her stuff. That said, the class is unbearable. Excessive weekly homework and quizzes, the tests are intentionally tricky, she demands an insane amount of work to be shown. I got ab A in Math142 before this, yet struggled for an A in its prereq
I was able to get an A easily in Math147 (calculus for biology majors), but i really had to work in this class. test graders are so freaking picky about the work you show for the free response... no TB but the homework is on CENGAGE, so you have to pay for the subscription. overall a nice professor, but thats about it.
It's a math class so if you suck at math like do and are a business major get ready to cry. Professor Coffelt is an amazing teacher but the material is over math and that's what I hate about this class. Show up, go to the tutoring and pray for a miracle. I was fortunate enough to take this with pass fail but as long as you try you can pass.
Ms. Coffelt is by far one of the best professors I've had so far. If you don't understand a concept in the way that she teaches, she will find another way to explain it to you. Go to her office hours if you have any questions!! She really wants to know all of her students and make sure that they are learning to the best of their abilities.
Professor Coffelt is such a nice lady who is willing to help you! Math is a hard subject for me, but I managed to pass this course with a decent grade. If you can take Coffelt I would. There is lots of homework and she does pop quizzes and random in class assignments that can hurt you if you miss so many.
Do not take this professor. She is helpful and friendly outside of class, but that doesn't help you succeed. Precalculus is not supposed to be hard, she makes it very difficult. The material is presented in a confusing fashion and there are strict restrictions which must be followed to do well on tests. Not enjoyable, lots of busy work, don't take.
Ms. Coffelt is very nice and a good teacher, but the common exams kill this class. She herself doesn't agree with the common exams and their grading format, but she continues to follow it. Exams are ridiculously hard, with no curve, because the prof who makes the exam's class does well on it.
I was disappointed in the work load this class has. In the middle of a pandemic, there was no "taking it easy." I really had to struggle to pass. Can't ask questions during lectures and this is very unfair considering it's a math course.
I took her class during COVID. The class was scheduled to be Tuesdays and Thursdays but she split us up to only go one day. Before class you watch her video lectures that explain everything really good. She is very helpful when answering questions and emails and helps you understand it. Always tries to get test grades out asap. Free textbook.
She uses her lecture time to ask questions so have to watch all her lecture videos before class for an in class activity. Can be hard to do because homework and discussion post is due Sunday night then have to watch all videos before Tuesday morn. She can be nice but other times she stern and strict. Overall the material is easy and probs all know
Her office hour zooms are the reason I finished my assignments. She is very willing to help and explains very well. Only required to attend class once a week.
Took her FALL 2020 with covid being a thing. Every class had more HW than usual. Coffelt is an effective teacher and she was super easy to go to during office hours. Definitely watch the lecture videos and you can skip over some topics because the class is mostly a review of Algebra 2/pre cal. Commit a little bit of time each day to her class.
She really cares about her students. She is always open to questions and will help you as much as she can. She does give a good amount of homework, but it is doable and you have an In-Class Assignment each week. Class was Tuesday/Thursday, but you have a designated day to attend, so class was once a week. I would definitely take her again.
Ms. Coffelt is a fantastic teacher who really cares how her students perform. She is always willing to help and responds to emails very quickly. There are in-class activities and discussions weekly but they are pretty easy. There is a lot of hw however. The tests/final exam are 80% of the grade so do well on those and you'll be fine.
She is very good at her job. Can explain very well. Very organized and helpful when you have questions. Wasn't too hard for me but math is an easy subject for me. Grades as quickly as possible. Very accessible outside of class. Watch lecture videos and then go into class for her to explain it better and answer questions. Quizzes over each chapter.
Class is set up where you watch two hours of lectures a week outside of class then go over homework and do an activity in class. Except the activity is over the homework that isn't due until the end of the week so everyone was always lost in class. Three exams and a final comprise 80% of the grade. If you're good at math you'd probably do fine
Every lecture prerecorded and online which was very difficult for me as I need to be able to ask questions while learning math. The tests were hard as I got Low Cs on every test that I thought I did good on. Make sure you attended class and there as in-class activities that make up a good portion of your grade. Had to study the math textbook too
There were assignments that were do after every class that you could only access for the time of class so you have to show up for them. There was 2-3 hours of lecture videos each week and she talks very monotone. Exams were not terrible if you do the reviews in the textbook
An alright professor for pre-calc. Does not curve and does not give extra credit. The homework isn't heavy or anything but if you get it wrong there's no explanation and you just get points taken off so beware.
Hardest professor I took here. Would not recommend taking this class at all!
Professor Coffelt is the best professor Ive had when it came to getting help. Her lectures are jam packed with info but shes fast at answering emails and has helpful office hours! The open ended portion on tests is super specific but during the lectures she explains exactly what she wants to see. super enjoyable for a math class!
Coffelt has a somewhat bitter exterior that may make class kind of unenjoyable, but it most definitely won't make the class difficult. She is very accessible outside of class and the material itself is pretty straightforward, especially if you already took algebra in high school. Try not to fall asleep in class and you will live, I promise.
Do not take her, she doesn't curve any of the tests even though the class tests average are horrible. She does drop a lot of grades but it's not worth it just take this class with someone else.
This class will make you cry because it's MATH 140, but she is the kindest person ever. I went to every office hour and got to know her and she helped me make an A. I didn't even pass the math portion on the TSI, but being consistent about going to her office hours helped me SO much. GET TO KNOW HER and work hard and you will pass!
She genuinely cares about her students and actually wants to see them succeed. Her doors are always open for office hours and she makes that clear and less intimidating. Anytime I've had a question on my homework I would send her a message about it and she would usually respond within the day! One of the good ones when it comes to math teachers
Professor Coffelt is a great teacher and as long as you do the work you will pass. Her lectures are recorded in case you miss class but attendance is taken for a grade. We do group work and it is very helpful because the questions are similar to the test. She has in person office hours and really cares for her students. There is definitely homewor.
I thought that the class itself was really hard, but Professor Coffelt is a genuinely good teacher and you can tell she is passionate about what she is teaching. She is the head of the TAMU math department so regardless of the teacher for 140, Coffelt wrote the textbook youre given and is featured in the video lectures.
Professor Coffelt is an okay professor who just at times seems over the top with snarky or petty comments from time to time. I struggle with math so the class wasn't easy but studying and looking through the textbook helps. Weekly homework and no test curves hurt a lot so study hard.
THE BEST MATH 140 Professor. She is always willing to help students with homework and more via email and OFFICE HOURS!! Using the chapter review from the textbook is the best form to prepare for any exam of since she WROTE THE BOOK. DO NOT LEAVE THE HOMEWORK FOR LAST MINUTE. PLEASE GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS!! You will easily pass with her help.
Professor Coffelt is amazing. The textbook is electronically so no need to buy it and the chapter reviews will help you pass the exams more than the homework. The homework can seem overwhelming only and ONLY IF you procrastinate. Print out the notes and follow along as she teaches class VERY HELPFUL. Attending her office hours will make the HW easy
A majority if not all of what I learned is stuff from high school so I found the class very easy. You get about 2-3 homework assignments a week due at the end. The class if very manageable and the chapter reviews definitely help with the test because she writes both of them. Easy A if you are a pretty good student and good at math. good prof!!
If you are taking MATH140, I would highly suggest Professor Coffelt. She is a hard grader and you do have to show up to class to get an A. But, she is an amazing professor who really cares about her students and is super accessible outside of class for any questions. Make sure to do the in-book reviews!
Proffesor Coffelt is a great one! I struggled with math before I even got to college and for once i felt like i fully understood what was going on. She may seem mean during lectures but show up to office hours and she would be happy to help you. Make sure you use the book to review for exams. I totally recommend taking her for sure! You will learn!
This class is manageable. If you struggle with math i would recommend taking her, she talks slow and allows for questions. Although i never used her office hours, i have heard they are very helpful. i would also 100% recommend going to the math help center. its included from your tuition and such a good resource to be able to complete assignments.
Dr. Coffelt is a solid choice for MATH 140. She always made sure to answer questions well and teach the material as if we haven't seen it before. Go to class, take good notes, go to her office hours if needed, email her if needed, and you'll be just fine! Study hard for the exams as they make up a lot of your grade.
Great prof for math 140. Re-explains topics from highschool you may not remember, and clearly explains new topics. Accepting of questions and has great office hours. Online weekly homework with 3 attempts and weekly group papers with 3 peers of your choice. Final grade based on a lot of grades throughout the semester and cumulative final.
The BEST math professor you can take. Go to her office hours and get to know her. Her office hours are very beneficial and she is VERY helpful. She might seem intimidating during lectures but she is super caring and understanding. Print out the chapter notes and come to class because she does clicker questions randomly. Highly Recommend!!!
Loved Professor Coffelt! The course is not too challenging as most of the material was learned in Algebra 2 or Pre-Cal in high school, but it is necessary to attend class to understand course expectations. Ms. Coffelt clearly communicated all expectations for the course, and I was always able to see my grade and meet with her to ask questions.
SHE WAS HARD!!! I have taken math and this women TAKES THE CAKE. I couldn't stand her. I worked so hard to get by with a c in that class. studied for hours, agonized over her homework and exams. Went brain dead several times due to exhaustion. Don't take her if you cant help it.
ABSOLUTELY FRUSTRATING!!! I wish I could. say that she was just an average "not so good" but NO. She was just so frustrating to pay attention to, the grading is not helpful and even if you do the work and you study, YOU MAY STILL FAIL. I tried and worked for hours and she was not being very constructive. The Grading is awful! DO NOT TAKE HER!!
For a college math class this was HARD. I struggle at math and Professor Coffelt did not make it any easier. She is a wonderful person and definitely cares about her students but she will make you WORK for a good grade. I was happy passing by one point. Her tests are frustrating even if you excel on the homework. Group work did help.
If there's an opening for Coffelt, I'd highly recommend. She gives more time on tests than other profs!! Her lectures are easy to understand, and if you're confused about homework GO TO OFFICE HOURS she is so helpful and will work on each problem with you. Idk why some reviews say this class was hard - if you try/pay attention an A is def possible.
This professor was extremely difficult to follow if you are not a "math person". She tests for very specific responses on exams, the homework weekly is graded online and it is difficult to earn partial credit, and you will learn a decent amount of the material on your own time.
She was super nice and straightforward about what was expected of us in class.140 is an intro class in nature anyways so none of the concepts were above comprehension. You have to go to class to be successful because there are iClicker questions almost every period. Also, she helped write the textbook so she knows what she's talking about.
I was unsure at the beginning of the semester, but she is a good professor. You need to go to class to succeed and you need to do the homework. There is a lot of homework but its doable. She is available outside of class and willing to help. She drops the lowest grades in a few categories which definitely helped my grade. Easy B, harder A.
The class itself is super easy. Professor Coffelt talks soo slow so I guess if you need more time to understand a concept that's good, but I just felt like class was moving so slow. We had group work every Friday but it wasn't bad. Definitely go to class because there are clicker questions every time, but if you don't the lectures are online.
Coffelt grades very tough, if it's not written her way it's wrong. She explains everything step by step but sometimes it gets confusing. Attendance is mandatory with random clicker questions, if you don't buy the homework you will fail the class. There is a lot of homework and there are weekly video quizzes, go to weekly review sessions.
Attendance somewhat required, clicker questions everyday but only 3% of grade. Exams are much easier than homework. Homework can be hard. Lots of options for additional help. I found it easy to fall behind in this class. 2-3 homeworks a week with several video quizzes. Solid option for the class, very straight forward professor
She explains the math very easily and is open for questions. Overall, attendance is important for iclicker questions and group assignments usually on Fridays. The work was very simple and there were week in reviews and textbook problems for the exams.
Not the most understanding prof you'll ever take as far as disability stuff so heads up if you're disabled, but she has a knack for making math easy (as someone who hasn't understood math since tenth grade). If you don't go to class, highest you can get is a low B. She even makes a playlist of the class's favorite songs and plays it every day.
She was an OK professor! She wrote the textbook and the notes are the textbook so print them if needed! Her tests arent to bad I just suck at taking tests! Its literally you do it her way or its wrong which is dumb! She is a bit of a tough professor because of her grading but not to bad! She does drop a ton of grades towards the end!
Slowest talker - lectures were pretty painful. Hours of homework weekly on WebAssign and watching lecture videos before class. Clicker questions in class. She knows what she's doing and has great organization, but can be a bit cold. She's not very compassionate and treats everyone as if they are untrustworthy and unmotivated.
The textbook is provided. There are many outside assignments, such as watching videos before and after class. Every Friday there are group assignments where you can work with 3 other people in the class. You are graded as a group so make sure that you choose wisely who you will work with.
There is not a professor I could recommend less than Professor Coffelt. Her tests and quizzes were unbearably hard compared to lecture and she shows no grace towards anyone. I dedicated my "life" to this course, be prepared to spend 13-15 hours a week on this class if you want an A or B it's a nightmare. All I can say is RUN!!
Prof. Coffelt was amazing. Although I didn't receive the A I was hoping too, I learned so much this semester. Her class is very organized and she is very accessible outside of the class if you have questions. Her exams are hard so be prepared to study. All aside, she is incredibly sweet and compassionate. Take her if you can!
Professor Coffelt is genuinely a good teacher, however, it feels like she makes it difficult to succeed in her class. Mandatory quizzes and groupworks every single Monday and Friday along with three difficult exams. She is an extremely hard grader, and you must do EVERYTHING her way to receive credit.
Prof. Coffelt teaches the material well, but she makes it very hard to succeed grade-wise. The lecture material is easier than the quizzes/homework, and the exams are hard (failing averages frequent in my class, no curves/extra credit ever). An A is possible (I got one with no calculus experience), but your TA matters and you have to work for it.
For me, it wasn't the actual content that was difficult, it was the fact that the questions on the test were NOTHING like any of the problems we tried in class, in the textbook, nor the group-works or quizzes. I ended up spending more than 15 hrs a week simply on math. Her grading is very inconsistent. If you get her as a prof, DROP!
She is a great professor. Although I got a B, she was really helpful.
Professor Coffelt was a very respectable, accessible professor. However, she was a difficult grader and notation greatly matters.
An awesome professor who definitely teaches because she enjoys it! Material is tough so you have to work hard for an A but she provides lots of practice questions which help. Her exams are tough, but not impossible if you study. Pick partners wisely for the groupwork. Her office hours were very helpful, she definitely tries to help you understand.
Honestly one of the worse professors I have ever had. She took a relatively easy class and made the content extremely confusing and difficult. Grades EXTREMELY harsh, harsher than the other Math 140 teachers. Does not even put any reviews together before tests for students and instead sends them to another professor if they want review material.
She definitely teaches the class because she enjoys the subject, but Math 140 is a hard class with any prof at A&M. Definitely have to get extra help outside of class in order to get any grade above a C- and that's even hard. Math with other profs is tougher though, and she always is very forgiving with attendance if you have an excuse.
Very thorough when it comes to lecturing, it's just important that you go to every single class and pay attention. There are 5-10 lecture videos every week, along with 2-3 homework assignments. For the exams, it's important that you truly know the material, and don't just have it memorized, she prepares the test to not be done by calculator.
I had taken MATH 142 and I think 140 with Coffelt was harder even though 140 was supposed to prepare you for 142. The exams aren't hard as long as you study but are content heavy, with the 3rd exam being the worst. There are 2-3 homework assignments a week with lecture videos. The lectures are insanely boring and slow and 1 clicker for attendance.
I have taken several years of calculus, yet switched majors & needed this class, finding it much harder than necessary. Requires group work: even if you know material, your group may not so you get a bad grade. You HAVE to go to class even if you know it. I was able to perform well, but this professor likes to make things unnecessarily complicated.
Took her for MATH151 this spring; just incredible, honestly. Coming down to finals, she dropped 5/14 quizzes, 3/9 labs, and 3 participation grades. She teaches Math in a very digestible way, and is so easy on grading, she even is going to look over our all MC final to see if we had the right work sort-of, and give us half credit for those.
Professor Coffelt was definitely a harsh grader. You must write your answers exactly how she wants you to; otherwise, she will dock many points even though your answer is correct!! Exams are tough and require knowledge beyond the subjects covered in class.
Professor Coffelt was a fantastic professor. I struggled in this class given I am not great at math, but her notes were very clear, and she was always available to help explain things. I definitely recommend going to her office hours regularly, if she recognizes you she will be sure to make a point in making note of that. I highly recommend her!
She is very clear about expectations and really knows her stuff. This class was as painless as a math class can possibly be for a non-STEM student. I definitely recommend. Even if you miss class, she has videos of the lectures so you can fill in all of the notes. Great professor!! Also go to office hours!
I absolutely loved taking Math 151 with Dr. Coffelt. She knows her stuff and is always willing to help during and outside of class. Her lectures are very clear and easy to follow and she will always stop and answer any question during lecture. She cares about her students and it shows in everything she does. Would 100% take her again!
She is a very caring professor and really wants her students to succeed! She does have weekly group assignments and lots of hw. She is very accessible outside of class, email and really talk with her if there is something going on. She understands that we are all human and make mistakes and is willing to help in whatever way she can.
She was a very sweet and knowledgeable professor; however, her notes were nothing like the homework. Exams were relatively challenging. Pay attention to quiz formatting, she counts off if you don't do limits perfectly.
Professor Coffelt made this class very "likable." She breaks down every concept, making sure to answer students' questions along the way. There are weekly short in-person group assignments, where she provides much help. The weekly hw assignments/online quizzes are extremely manageable. She offers many resources, which make tests somewhat easy.
She is nice enough but very nit picky while grading and you'll usually need to ask for more details than her notes and be in her office hours to pass, exams are hard.
If you stay on top of this class and know when to ask for help, it is very doable. She goes at a good pace and explains concepts very well.
Textbook was free! Tests are lecture heavy so make sure to really know the material. Attendance is taken using iclicker. There is weekly group (4 or less people) assignments in class on Fridays so be prepared to work with others. Group assignments aren't too bad. She is straight forward when it comes what you need to know for exams.
Mrs. Coffelt is great! She can be very precise with what she expects for tests, which can be a bit annoying but honestly helps to catch mistakes. There's lots of homework and some due over breaks but if you keep track you'll be ok. A very welcoming environment and she also drops a lot a grades at the end so it's great!
Math 140 is a tough class, but I'm so happy that I was blessed with the head of the math department as my teacher. She is great at explaining difficult concepts and truly cares about her students. She has 4 tests, lots of group work, weekly videos, and weekly homework. She is passionate about teaching and it shows.
Professor Coffelt makes sure that she does her best to teach the material in a way that is understandable for all students, no matter if they have previous experience in calculus. Exams are hard but she gives partial credit for attempted problems, she checks for understanding more than correctness. Weekly quizzes and groupwork but they're not bad.
Although this class may be scary in the beginning, if you put in the work you can get an A. Professor Coffelt may be a tough grader, but if you just follow the way she shows her work in class then you will do great on the exams. Show all your work on the exam she gives partial credit. Go to office hours, she is there to help and answer questions!!
Amazing professor but course was very difficult. Half of the class q-dropped. Make sure to go for office hours.
Many students are already overwhelmed when they find out they have to take calculus, and this professor does not help at all. She makes calculus more complicated than it needs to and her problems during class as well as homework are not good representations of what is on the test. If you can avoid taking her, please do!
Calculus itself is hard but I think she explained things as well as they can be so she's not bad at all, the subject is just hard. She is very serious and can seem intimidating if you only see her in lecture but as soon as I went office hours she's genuinely the sweetest and super helpful/patient. MANY drop ...but because they cheat on the MPE.
For a difficult class, the subjects are broken down very well. She's kind and helpful but a little curt if you disagree. Weekly groupworks/quizzes are great practice for exams - HW not so much. She grades based on your work and your answer, so sometimes the rubric seems a little subjective. The class itself is hard - it isn't her fault.
She is really nice and helpful during office hours but she will try to trip you up a bit on quizzes and tests. The lecture is taught very well and she's very open for questions. If you need help go to TA or her office hours and you'll do fine.
This class is extremely difficult. Lessons are easy enough but the quizzes and exams are harder than anything she teaches. Go to office hours for help? Doesn't matter. She'll just say to look at your notes. The class average on exams is always failing and she doesn't curve. Got all A's on hw and group work, but exams tanked my grade.
Her class is very boring, but she is a great professor overall. She teaches all the subjects well and helps a lot when needed. Kinda funny, I liked her. Class is hard tho, lots of homework.
Coffelt was a good professor and seemed to genuinely just want us all to learn and retain the material from the class, but, if you're terrible at math like me, I'd skip on taking any math class through A&M and just go take it at a community college. Her class had an insane amount of homework.
Highly recommend if you're intimidated by math. Doesn't go super fast, always willing to answer questions. She responds very fast to WebAssign questions even outside of class hours with detailed responses. Very strong lecturer and super sweet person. Posts lecture videos, exam reviews, and keys for quizzes/exams. Final replaces lowest exam score.
I would do anything to get to take another class with Dr Coffelt. She is so awesome, so fun, so easy to work with, and so consistent. Always ready to answer questions or meet with you and is very clear in her grading policies. Amazing
Ms. Coffelt was such a kind professor and very accessible outside of the classroom. I struggled in the beginning of the course when I solely relied on the math helpdesk. To be fair, it's a tough course as is. Once you get to know her more, you can tell she cares so much about her students and wants you to succeed. She's amazing! I'll miss her.
One of the better profs here at Texas A&M. Clear lectures, attendance counts, and clicker questions offer extra points. Homework: online 2x week, 6 attempts per Q. Exams: 65% of grade, picky grader, no curves/extra credit. She is intimidating but emails back quickly and plays our favorite songs before lectures!! She also attends the SI sessions.
Compared to every other math prof I've had, Coffelt is amazing. Lectures are thorough and easy to understand. Lots of webassigns for homework that can get time consuming but will get you to where you understand the material well. Would recommend if you've struggled in math classes before. Overall a very good professor.
Beware of tests, I made As on everything except the final and still got a B. It was incredibly hard to prepare fo because there was no set cumulative review, so everything was kind of up in the air. Week in reviews teach concepts, but DONT give good test question examples. Neither does the homework. Take someone else or get a tutor.
She has her own free textbook, so you don't have to buy it, and she posts videos and small quizzes going over the material so you can be prepared before class. 2-3 weekly HW assignments, 3 exams, group assignments every Thursday, clicker attendance every class, helpful during office hours, financial project, and final. It is an easy class.
Professor Coffelt is nice, but she does not teach the class material well. Class has heavy homework load and three exams, plus a final. Class may have been easier if she could have taught the material better, but her instruction is unclear and unhelpful. She is extremely strict.
Hard class, definitely plan for it to take up a lot of time. Coffelt is a good prof, just intimidating, but also understanding if she sees you're actually trying. Good amount of homework. I hate Cengage, but that's a me thing. Tests were hard but she also told you what to expect. Math lab is a joke, Python is awful, def make friends in lab.
Math can be daunting but you can tell that she really wants everyone to learn and enjoy the subject. I am glad I chose to take math with her!
She was nice prof. Go to her office hours!! Just make sure you know your stuff and you'll do fine.
Such a great professor. Definitely take her for 140. She broke everything down in what you needed to know and explained everything well during her class. Go to her office hours!!
This class is pretty awful but that's more because of the math department than the professors. Prof Coffelt has boring lectures with iClickers every class. She made countless passive aggressive remarks when someone walked in late or made a noise. There is group homework that you need to show up to do. Coursework is easy if you are decent at math.
Great professor. Explains the topics very well and is always available for questions. There is a lot of work, but it's very manageable. Tests are always easy as long as you paid attention.
Class can be boring, but its important so it worth putting in the effort. Recitation is a good opportunity to meet people and catch up. Weekly quizes that are pretty accurate to test questions so they can be tough. 3 midterms worth 54% and the final is worth 20% but your final also replaces your lowest test.
Professor Coffelt has clear lectures and cares about student success. The course has a heavy workload with weekly assignments and exams, but using resources like Unstuck AI can make the material more manageable.
Dr. Coffelt was great. The other reviews speak of too much homework but she is only following criteria for said class. Attendance=mandatory. Lectures=recorded! Final can replace lowest exam. Lock in when you start…not by the last exam! Study in between lectures—weekly quizzes and peer assignments. Lots of work but she teaches well!
She was honestly the best math prof I have had!!
Honestly, just go to class and do your homework. Math is hard but she explains everything well. If you have a question, she is pretty good at explaining the answer, so just ask instead of remaining clueless.
Professor Coffelt is a very good professor. She records lectures and explains everything in depth. She always replies back to my emails quickly. This is not my first time taking this class. With another professor, on my first exam i got a 40. With Coffelt i got a 94. You have to STUDY and do the homework. I highly recommend that you attend class.
Lots of homework, weekly quizzes. The class can be kind of overwhelming, but that's mostly a result of how the class is structured rather than the professor herself. I will say that she does definitely do certain things and teaches things a little more complicated than need be. But overall, this class just requires a lot of studying.
Responded to emails quickly and cared for effort. Free online textbook. Often, overcomplicated math steps (TA explained better) or rushed later material, like Trig. Grades: 3% iClicker, 11% WebAssign, 9% Quizzes, 3% Python, 54% 3 exams, 20% final (replaced lowest exam). Drops 2 quizzes. Exams had topic review and were fair. You get what you put in.
Professor Coffelt is great. She explains concepts clearly in lectures. She is very accessible outside of class and her office hours made a huge difference. The grading is tough but not unfair. She doesn't grade on a curve or give bonus points, but quizzes and exams she will give partial credit for wrong answers if correct work concepts are shown.
This professor is good, however, when it comes to free response questions, she will take off points if you don't solve it her way, even if you get the answer right. There are some lessons where her teaching is confusing, but besides those, she's a good professor. She also does not round up whatsoever, so whatever grade you get is what you get.
She is a strict grader who doesn't round scores, even for low averages. I can't recommend her to those with calculus knowledge because she insists on a specific problem-solving method; using a different approach, even if correct, leads to a wrong mark. Many students have dropped her class or failed. Avoid her if possible!!!
Ms. Coffelt is one of the nicest professors I've ever had. She was very accessible and her class was not hard at all if you have math knowledge. It is easy to get behind on the work so make sure you have good time management skills. She gave plenty of time to study for exams. I would recommend her to anyone taking Math 140.
She was an author of the textbook and it shows because of how many passive aggressive comments (and footnotes) I read and heard during lecture. This class is easy if you know math, otherwise study the 3 hours per credit hour. The python group labs are not fun, I am still confused on why non engineering majors are required to take engineering math.
She's old school but great. If you make use of her recording lectures, you'll do just fine. I found watching her work through problems in class then being able to do the notes later amazing.
Mrs. Coffelt was an awesome teacher, she was the reason I was able to pass Math 150. She would be really responsive to questions, and was willing to meet with you during times outside of her normal office hours. You do have to pay attention to the way she wants you to do the problems because she wants the best for you once you go into calculus.
Made the class easier than my previous professors and explains things in the video clearly and makes the material understandable. Not really a tough grader, but make sure to pay attention to how she wants things to be solved.
I took AP pre-cal in hs and got an A; this class was unnecessarily hard. Lectures are not recorded, so if you're confused, you'd have to go to office hours, which are not helpful because she just says the same thing. Unless you're good at math, then don't take her because this was my hardest class all semester, and i barely scraped by with a B.
I took her class online, you will have to spend a lot of time on her lecture notes, quizzes, and homework assignments. She is really nice and don't hesitate to ask questions during her office hours. She is always making sure you are understanding the material. Prep for the exam early they come quickly!!
I have always struggled with math, but Professor Coffelt made it make sense. She's very thorough, concise, and incredibly knowledgeable in the field of mathematics. As long as you do the homework on your own and put in real effort, you will succeed in her class.
