No structure whatsoever to the class. Sociology class turned into a CJ class, I understand her experience is in law enforcement but there was no criteria set for this class so she just talked about domestic violence and dysfunctional families for the entire course.
Dixon is a cool person but sucks as a teacher. She doesn't not put her class as a priority. I understand she was a cop before but is always doing something for her old job. Class were at time pointless. Disorganized and does NOT follow syllabus at all. Very unclear on instructions. Would not take again.
New instructor I really like this class and her teaching style. This class made me think in a different way.
I have this professor for two classes child abuse and criminology. Child abuse is hard class because of the subject matter. ; (( but she makes it really world. Crim is interesting getting ready to study serial killers.
You learn A LOT without even realizing it. She is very energetic and funny, so lectures tend to go by really quickly. Very inspirational and just plain amazing! TAKE HER!
not a typical lecturer. thinks and teaches out of the box. Assignments very interesting and easy. Not about memorizing concepts rather applying themes to real life situations
Not a typical lecturer. Assignments very interesting and easy. Not about memorizing concepts rather applying themes to real life situations. Don't buy the book! You won't need it! If you have a chance to take her take her! Her lectures are interesting!
She is amazing! You will love her
very unclear and becomes annoyed if students don't understand her the first time. she does not follow the syllabus. very rude and makes unnecessary comments about people. group projects are unclear. does not lecture with powerpoint or show interest in students learning. will suck up to evaluators and put on a show for them.
i would not recommend taking her class. one of the worst professors I have had. during class she is very blunt and inappropriate. rambles on and does not go by the syllabus. she treats her students as if they are stupid. she becomes frustrated and bothered if you dont understand the subject. oh and dont use laptops she will nail you about it daily
Does not follow the syllabus at all. Assignments are vague and she gets frustrated if you don't understand the concepts of the assignment.
Well Dixon is by far the most outgoing professor I have had at CSULB. She is passionate about teaching this subject. Her examples of her own life experiences keeps the class interesting and honestly has inspired me. I would definitely take her again super easy and fun. She is not your average professor she's great.
Professor Dixon is an amazing lecturer. She wants her students to think outside of the box. She has a unique way of teaching. Her class is not about memorizing definitions/facts instead she aims to prepare you for real life situations.
Great Professor. I would highly recommend her and take her again. Midterm and Final are on videos we watch, 3 assignments that are easy and not long at all, and 1 class project that is fun. No book needed and teaches so you can learn new skills. Do not take her if you like papers and hard test because she doesn't have those.
She is an awesome Professor! Participation matters!
Dixon has been by far one of my favorite professors. She has opened my eyes up to understanding people and issues of abuse. I have attended more out of school activities because she create opportunities to learn beyond the classroom. I attended two human trafficking trainings and volunteered at the Santa Ana zoo for a child Abuse event. awesome
There was 2 group projects, 2 papers and she would make us do little activities that were super easy. She is a dope professor. She's an awesome person I loved this Soc class. Attendance is not really mandatory but try not to miss.
Professor Dixon was awesome! She assigned a group project which wasn't bad at all. Midterm and final plus couple writing assignments. If you are shy and quiet in class, that will definitely change.
Hands down one of the best professors I've had. She's extremely down to earth and will help you if needed. She's genuinely interested in helping her students. Class was straight forward. 3 essays and a group project. The final we went and volunteered which is way better than an exam and it was great for our resumes.
Professor Dixon is very chill and funny. She like the class to participate as she lectures so she will ask anyone a question and expect and answer from you. Doesn't teach from powerpoint directly like other professors. There were 1 midterm, 1 group project, 2-3 papers, and 1 final. She isn't organized always but she is straightforward.
Im a transfer student and this is my first semester at CSULB. She is probably my favorite teacher, this class is an easy A! Shes funny, nice, helpful, and she really cares about her students. The papers are easy, there is one group project and two midterms. I hope I can take her again!
Professor Dixon is amazing. She is not your typical professor. She has tons of real-world experience and uses it to her advantage. Her lectures are very interesting. I highly recommend taking her.
JUST TAKE HER. SHE GIVES YOU REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE SINCE SHE HAS A LOT OF EXPERIENCE AS SHE WAS A COP BEFORE. AMAZING PROFESSOR!!
I like her as a person a lot, I think she's funny and she genuinely cares about her students. But her class is too disorganized and unstructured. She's an easy A, but I'm looking to be a social worker and I took her class on child abuse and I wish i had taken another professor. Definitely take her if this is just elective credit for you.
ProfessorDixon is awesome! She challenges us to learn with a hands on approach. I appreciate the fact that she not only teaches but mentors us too. She pushed us to be a better person and learn beyond the classroom. She created opportunities for us to learn by working with at risk youth and linked us to having ownership to the community
she is kind, beautiful, attractive, and knowledgeable. I had no stress in her class. a very fun class when she brings her experience to class. Love, love, love her.
This is my 4th semester taking her. She's an awesome teacher and always keeps the class discussion interesting. She's flexible on deadlines as long as you don't abuse it. She's a ex cop as well with a abundance of knowledge to share for you future LEO's.
Love love love her. she is very caring and understand students' life situation. Her class is not hard at all. God bless Vanessa
This class is supposed to be a much more heavy and difficult topic to digest but professor Dixon does it through the breakdown of topics. We had two group projects, a midterm (based on a video) and a final based on a reading. She also gave us extra credit opportunities throughout the semester that involved us being more active in our communities.
The lectures are okay they can be a bit repetitive. Attendance is taken at the beginning and towards the end of the semester only. There is frequent class group work through out the semester. One short paper, two essays, one group presentation and essay final. Extra credit is offered throughout the semester. The book was not required.
She is awesome! I learned a lot from this class. This class was my favorite!
This was emotional a hard class. I have learned so much!!! Thank you Professor Dixon for this class, your passion and caring about your students!
She is very interesting and funny, but not an easy grader. There are about 5 papers with a group presentation. She gives no criteria and no feedback for her papers, which is why it's hard to get a high A even if you try. I'd suggest going to her office hours if you want do well on the papers.
Really great professor. She came in as a replacement for another professor and was waaaayyy better!!! There were a few group assignments but really really easy yet repetitive. Easy grader and easy A, she also answered emails promptly
I have taken Dixon for both criminology and child abuse and prevention. She offers such great insight and perspectives on all the subjects covered. I've learned a ton while not being overloaded with work. She's a great lecturer, never boring, and has always been approachable. I would definitely recommend taking her!
took her for CJ 302, had a midterm and a final, one group project, and two easy papers and one easy assignment, SUPER EASY CLASS
Second taking Professor Dixon. She has clear expectations of students work. Her syllabus is a guide and not some sort of weekly deadline which I feel I have gotten more from her classes than some other professors who rush through topics just to be on a strict timeline. Her class is hands on and very engaging. She is a prior law enforcement officer.
This is my second time taking her. Took her for child abuse vention and currently taking her for critical criminology. I like that she doesnt follow the traditional book and lecture format. My favorite assignment was the group project we did about serial killers. Only group project I have ever enjoyed.
One of my favorite professors! Her class is interesting and you learn so many different skills. She is amazing and makes class fun and easy. Her assignments are easy and you're guaranteed to pass as long as you show up to class. There is one group project, but it's simple and a good learning experience. You can tell she wants everyone to succeed.
Vanessa was one of the professors that made me view my world in a different light. She is an active and strong advocate for child abuse, which was something I did not know was prevalent. She made me get out of my comfort zone and volunteer to help children who are suffering. She made me discover that there was more to who I am than I thought.
The best professor I have ever encountered!! She does not assign a book but the material she provides you still learn a lot. What I love most about her is that she gives real life scenarios that you can actually apply to your life. There a few essays but she does not grade harshly. She cares about you and your future and I highly recommed her!!!
She's alright. I don't see the hype. She gives assignments without clear grading criteria because she wants you to be critical thinkers. Then she marks little points off of you from her imaginary rubric. She repeats the same stories a lot and seems like she has too much going on with her personal life. No thanks.
She's cool and easy to get along with. 5 write-up assignments throughout the semester which you have to put a little of effort to get A's. Midterm is a take home essay, really easy. She doesn't follow her syllabus and doesn't have clear guidelines for her assignments. Overall easy class.
An easy class but she doesn't explain the assignments enough to correlate with her grading. I thought i did A assignments but received a B. but it is an easy class like ridiculously easy bc theres no book, no quizzes, just 4 assignments and final free response. TAKE HER. She accepts EC and gives you job/internship/volunteer opportunities.
This class was very unclear and unorganized. Each assignment is based on "creativity" but then you are told your work is wrong. When taking the final, the exam had multiple grammar and spelling mistakes. Very unprofessional. She is nice, but she has way too much going on outside of class to give it the effort the students deserve. Not recommended.
She hardly ever does a proper presentation. Grade is based on a lot of group projects and mini papers. I have never wasted so many hours on useless information. Shes very sarcastic and dry humor. She gets angry when people dont understand her assignments, but no clear rubrics given. AVOID! She takes a long time to grade assignments as well.
I also took SOC 424 class with Dixon and she is awesome! Assignments you can apply to the real world and your resume like FEMA and SARA. I was disappointed in my classmates that didnt want to work in groups and made it difficult and class frustrating. I learned a lot especially about homeless. I will be a better police officer from this class!
Prof Dixon opened my eyes to many different areas personal and professional. Because of her extra credit opportunities I took the 40 hr domestic violence training and next week I start sexual assault training. She cares about students and is an interactive teacher. Not traditional but you will learn from her classes! Taking Soc 342 this semester
Lectures consist of class participation, videos and powerpoint and will say "be creative" with assignment but is a tough grader. The only way to get an A is if you attend the extra credit opportunities.
I am taking her for Spring 2019 and she is unorganized, cant fully understand her confusing assignments. She doesn't follow a rubric so you have to constantly check when things are randomly due. Turn on your notifications.
I like her lectures, she's funny and energetic. That being said, she is incredibly unorganized and is not very clear about her grading criteria. She has a TA grade papers who won't specify why you are getting the grade you are getting!
Pretty unorganized. Unclear grading criteria. She's funny at time, but is also very sarcastic. Gets angry when students are unclear about her assignments. Did not receive good feedback from assignments. Did not learn much from her class. Will not be taking another class with her.
As the other reviews stated, she doesnt give clear directions for her assignments, nor has a grading criteria which can get frustrating. Since she doesnt explain her assignments it can be tough figuring out exactly what she wants (so ASK questions thats how I got As on the paper!!) We had a total of 4 papers, 2 group projects.
I can see why some people get frustrated with this professor, but as long as you ask questions you should be fine. A lot of people in my class would complain because she wouldnt give clear directions, but always failed to ask her questions when she was explaining the assignments!! So ask questions!! She isnt difficult, I enjoyed her class :-)
People in class were being lazy! She was frustrated students didn't pay attention or listen to the directions. she went over them in every class and I think they were 8 pages long on the last assignment. Its a large class and people are totally playing games during class. Welcome to the real world. I learned a ton and taking her next semester!
This class turned out to be pretty fun and I learned a lot, albeit not through the classic lecture/assignment/test structure. Great professor who really wants you to learn how to SUCCEED in life, not how to pass a class.
This is an easy class but boring. Yes, I did learn some good information but all that was learned could have been taught in two weeks. The professor goes so slow and repeats information too much. It seemed pointless to show up to class sometimes. She's very sarcastic when replying to students. She will waste time on talking about the writing lab!
An emotionally difficult class (more than you think you can handle) but definitely helpful. Professor Dixon is a caring woman, but it does not always feel like she's qualified to be a professor for this course. There are five assignments, but the dates are determined whenever she wants. There's not the best structure, oops.
She cares a lot but at the same time, she is not the easiest to talk to. Someone asked a question and she started yelling. It was at times hard to understand what she was asking for and when since stuff was all over the place. Dates didn't match and her class structure was not easy to keep up with. We were always confused.
Ive had prof Dixon twice and I liked both classes Child abuse class was emotional harder. Crim was a cooler class because of the projects especially the serial killer one! Yea she doesnt give up front due dates but gives you enough notice went assignments are due and enough time to complete them . Shes pretty straight forward! Shes cool!
Cool class assignments are pretty good and use what you learn in class in the real world. Part of the assignments was to looking up community resources which helped me figure out what I would like to peruse after I graduate. Extra credit opportunities are resume building! Mock Child abuse interview was a real life experience.
Worst professor I've ever taken. She's very rude and unprofessional, doesn't like questions on assign. Very sarcastic attitude and a tough grader but gives no feedback on any assignments. I have never met a professor with such a bad attitude. Also UNORGANIZED she had us work on an entire essay with NO prompt but was irritated when we had questions
I took an upper division Crim class with Dixon, she gave us many writing assignments, 2 group presentations, and a final exam. The projects were on serial killers and a community/city. I didnt really like the class maybe because of the other people but it just wasnt my jam
She is really difficult to work with based on her poor attitude. She had us work on essays without prompts and then spent entire lecture days criticizing students' papers. Her organization skills are terrible as well, she has made changes to assignments on the due dates. She is also a tough grader, you either have an A or F with no in-between.
I loved professor Dixon! She genuinely cares about her students and wants them to succeed in life. She gives students several opportunities and information on workshops. Every single assignment that she assigns she fully explains it and gives students a chance to ask questions about it. Very experienced & a great professor to keep in touch with!
Prof. Dixon was my only teacher that kept me connected after we didnt have classes because of Covid. She continued to teach virtually every class and I have great respect for all that she did for our class. Taking her again in the fall. Great job even with not being able to go to class.
It was a little difficult to stay on top of things since most of the assignments on the syllabus were TBA. She does often change due dates which helps. Two group projects and presentations. The midterm was given a month before the semester ends, and the final is virtual. She can have a bad attitude and answers rudely at times.
She's very rude. She encourages students to ask questions but then when we do, she answers very rude. She isn't organized and blames the students for being unsure of what the assignments are. It's not fair of her to treat any student so rudely.
Starting out the semester I was so excited to take a class with a teacher who seemed so enthused about teaching... Little did I know she would inflict the worst anxiety on me. She is an incredibly tough grader and overanalyzes each and every word in your essay. Take her class with caution! She's one tough cookie....
Professor Dixon is extremely unorganized and can be rude and condescending to students. Most of the time was spent trying to figure out group projects so I did not feel that I learned much. The work is pretty easy so take this class if you want an easy A, not if you're trying to learn the material.
Professor Dixon opened my eyes to not just child abuse but to human trafficking and domestic violence. This was by far the most interesting class Ive taken. This class has positively impacted me in many ways and taught me many lessons I will use in my own life. I wish everyone was required to take this class, I seriously learned a lot!
This online class was easy. There was 2 papers, 2 FEMA certificates, 2 group projects (one of which you present to the class), extra credit, attendance, a midterm, and a final exam. There was a textbook but I did not need it.
This is one of those classes where you are engaged in what the professor is teaching you. I really enjoy the class discussions. Caring professor with not a heavy workload for a sociology class. Every Soc Major should try taking one of her classes.
Avoid this teacher with your life, she is so rude when people try to ask questions. I have never been so appalled at a teacher's complete lack of direction. Her lectures are fine, but overall an awful professor.
I really like this class and prof Dixons teaching style. She opened my eyes to a lot this semester and made think about life after graduation and my future. One of the only profs that give a ton of extra credit opportunities and real world life skills.
Only take this class if no other teacher is available.
She is extremely unorganized, does not know how to explain her own assignments. Bad lecturer. Gets frustrated if you ask questions. Won't work with you if you have an excused absence. Never gives you feedback. Demands you go to the writing lab. Haven't learned anything in her class. AVOID her at all costs. Would not take her again!
Beware of group projects for the midterm and others. I got lucky with a good group but ik its a dealbreaker for some. She'll go so easy on you if you go to the writing lab at school before a paper is due! 10/10 recommend. Also go to her office hours because she's nicer to those who participate and show an effort
Professor Dixon gives a ton of extra credit opportunities during the semester. I have a attended two and last night on the culture of rape was great. She expects a lot but Ill be better prepared after graduation. If you do the work its not a hard class. Group work was intimidating at first I lucked out with great classmates.
Unprofessional. Unorganized. Even her thoughts as she explains are unorganized. She will grade your paper and suggest for you to use grammarly, and even when you use it she will determine you didnt. Shes always in a rush so dont bother with questions. She doesnt have clear deadlines. Watch out for sudden due dates. Dont say we didnt warn you.
Be aware of all her assignment names. She tends to name all her assignments all the same and expects you to know which assignment shes talking about. Her instructions are never clear. Forget to even ask questions. She gets annoyed easily. Im not really sure the positive feedback is even real.
This online class was easy but I would not take Vanessa again as, while she was sometimes nice, she was rude and disorganized. There was 2 papers, 2 group projects (we only presented one to the class), extra credit, attendance, 2 FEMA certificates, a midterm, and a final exam. This class had a textbook but I did not need it.
Personally I didnt really learn much from this class. We only learned one section of the book all semester. You dont really need the book. Shes rude and always has things to do so she seems like shes in a hurry. Always seemed annoyed if anyone asked her questions. FEMAS dont really prepare you for the outside world. Or any of her lessons.
This would be an easier class if she was more organized. She has a difficult time communicating assignments. When students ask for clarification, she gets irritated and becomes condescending. The syllabus is also not structured with due dates/assigned dates. She seems preoccupied with things outside of class and cancelled class several times.
WORST professor I've ever had. She is SO unorganized, and rude. She runs your papers through grammarly and literally just grades off of that. She admitted English isn't her strong suit, but gives zero grace when grading papers. Due dates are SUPER unclear. I was SO miserable in the class that I just withdrew and took the W on my transcript. AWFUL.
At first I was excited about taking a criminology course but then Professor Dixon really made things hard. Expected students to learn or be engaged with the organization of courseExpects you to use Gram-marly and writing labs for every project . One of the worst Professor I ever had. Rude ,non motivational, demeaning. Lacking empathy for students.
really loved her class. you learn about interesting topics. class is usually just discussions and watching videos. very few assignments but they are heavy on writing so be aware! id take this class again.
So idk why there are so many bad reviews of Professor Dixon. She is absolutely my favorite professor. I look forward to going to her class ALL THE TIME. She literally lectures as if it was a casual conversation. She teaches by her knowledge and EXPERIENCE. I love it. I'd rather have someone teach by that than some textbook. She's the best! Easy A.
I had her 2 semesters ago, it was wonderful. This semester the class has been very chaotic. All assignments including the midterm was due 3 weeks before the final. Total of 3 different things all due before the final. It was very chaotic this semester with things all over the place. She is ok...
I actually really enjoyed class with this professor. She knows how to engage students with her lectures and I loved that she incorporated her personal experiences into her teaching style. As for grading, if you do the readings and really understand the theorys, youll get an easy A on her paper assignments. 2 group projects which were really fun.
My semester with Dixon was a bit weird. I felt like the whole time I was doing horrible, I really didn't pay attention in her class, and I am never confident with papers. But, I ended up getting an A on every assignment , make sure to go to the writing lab with your papers and email her proof, she gave me an A on two assignments when I went
I'm not sure why Prof. Dixon has bad reviews. Personally, I enjoyed the course and I feel that the material prepares you for the outside world. The writing assignments are -7pg requirement. Like any other Professor, she expects students to proofread their work... ( come on people, its college level work). Overall, she expects you to be accountable
This Professor is by far one of the best Ive ever had. It is clear that she is passionate in what she teaches and that she really cares about her students. The work is lightweight & mostly consisted of group projects. Lots of extra credit opportunities that in the end help you. Would 10000% recommend you take a class with her.
I really enjoyed this class and Professor Dixon is awesome. You are not graded by much. Two group projects, maybe two papers / free response assignments, and three FEMA certificates that are FOR YOUR OWN BENEFIT! The thing that could make this class hard is the organization of assignments, it is pretty much left to students to organize themselves.
Two weeks into the semester and I love the class and the prof. Looking forward to my last semester at along Beach
Four weeks into class. I really have enjoyed class and prof Dixon. Good lectures and great extra credit opportunities. This past class we talked about personal safety, and being a victim of a crime. It totally creeped me out but a good eye-opener Seems to care about students and their future. Look forward to the semester.
Very passionate professor, and has great experiences that she will share during lectures. Very few assignments but big percentages of grades. The Final was very easy, we did a group presentation.
1 research paper (minimum 3 pgs), 1 group presentation, 3 FEMA certificates, Midterm on a documentary (answer a couple questions), and a final. Prof. Dixon really recommends going to a writing center for papers. Overall, easy class if you do what is needed.
Professor Dixon was my favorite professor that I had this semester, maybe my favorite so far at CSULB. She requires students to complete 3 FEMA assignments (which is bad at all) and assigned 2 group projects which are both fun. The only hard thing about the class is the 1 big paper she makes you do which she grades pretty hard. 10/10 though.
Honestly I can't really put into words on how you should stay away from this professor. First of all, she is the first that I and other students felt the need to report to the department head. Guilt trips students and requirements are usually not clear, but she expects you to read her mind. Grades harshly on no real basis.
I've taken Dixon for Child Abuse + Crim, and both were great because she's a real one. Don't listen to negative reviews from students. Most of them are incompetent and don't listen, participate, or make an effort whatsoever. Dixon is passionate about her work and wants students to succeed, but it's hard when many don't care. Would take again - G.T.
Proffesor is burnt out and you can tell she doesn't like online lecture. Will get angry at class if no one participates or is confused about her assingments in which she will hint some sas "We just reviewed it", but will still answer with attitude. Overall very easy class tho, assingments are easy but her instruction to them are very unclear.
I took her for my 1st spring semester at CSULB and she was great. We did two group projects and we were able to stay in the same groups if we like. Wrote about 3 papers nothing too hard, no discussion posts and I feel like all the assignments were very interesting. I would take her again. She really worked with students and offered extra credit.
I had Prof Dixon online and this semester in person. I like her teaching and assignments. She cares about students and their future. Classmates never talked or participated in the online class. Made group projects harder but I learned a lot in this class. I highly recommend her teaching.
I had Dixon spring of '24. Honestly really enjoyed her class and lectures. She has a lot of experience since she was a cop. For our midterm we watched a crips and bloods documentary and the final project was with 2 people on a serial killer. We had a few other short assignments nothing crazy. She does want people to participate and have cameras on.
I took her for fall '24 and she is not a bad professor so I don't understand how she has a 3.8/5. You're graded on 6 things and she gives you plenty of time to complete the assignments with detailed outlines, plus they're short papers (2-5) which is not difficult. Forgot to turn in an assignment which explains my grade but she's not a tough grader.
My major honestly has nothing to do with this class, but I took it as one of my UD GEs. I learned a lot and I have no regrets taking Prof Dixon. It was an easy class, super reasonable workload, and she truly does care about her students. If you don't like group work you probably wouldn't enjoy her class, but I don't have any issue w that.
Not sure why her rating is so low. She's an amazing professor and you're graded on 6 assignments which she gives plenty of time to complete. She did assign one group project (5-6 page) but due to some mishaps, we completed it individually! My grade is due to a late assignment but she still gave me a high grade.
Professor Dixon runs a solid course. The assignments can be challenging, but she cares about student learning. I found unstuckstudy and ChatGPT helpful for preparing. Overall, a rewarding class if you stay engaged.
I just dropped the class. It is an Asynchronous class and she is not communicating at all or responding to emails. Only (bare with me announcements with excuses on why she is not giving us any directions). Would never ever take a class with her ever again.
Was not the most empathetic professor. Heavy assignments where at times she did not provide enough clarification were just given without remorse for the overall workload.
I like prof. Dixons class this is my second semester taking her class. She is a solid professor who cares about students and there future. She gives a lot of learning opportunities in and outside of class. She was helpful when I was going through some personal issues. She expects students to do their part of showing up and learning.
I have to laugh at students negative comments. I've taken her twice. I needed a letter of recommendation and she was willing to help me out. Closer I get to graduation I realize how many of my classmates need to grow up and face reality cause you're in college. If I had another semester I would have asked to be her TA. She is cool!
If I could have Professor Dixon again, I would. She was an amazing and passionate professor who really cares for her students and the success of all. Her class was not difficult at all, with a few papers and group projects. I truly enjoyed the lectures from her class and would take her again if could!
