She is a little weird... Sometimes class isn't that bad. I wouldn't recommend taking her though. Good luck!
The class isn't terrible, but she does pick favorites. And you better be well-prepared before you come to class.
She's a great teacher! Always cool and ready to chat with her students. She does have favorites, though, but if you're one of them, this class will be a breeze.
She is a GREAT PROFESSOR! I LOVE HER CLASS
She's very nice and surprisingly knowledgeable based on how uninformative class discussions/lectures can be. She gives you a week off for every paper assigned - huge plus. Hit-or-miss with grades.
This was the worst class I have ever had. She is more interested in checking to see if people read the material than in actually having a serious discussion. If you don't regurgitate her opinions in your papers, they are inferior. Despite that, I still got a decent grade. Don't take this class, it's not at a college standard.
She is very excited about all the material, but class discussions are usually pretty boring because she just reviews the plot of the reading. Make sure you have read the material before coming to class (or spark notes it) because she sometimes randomly calls on people. I liked her as an honors professor.
Shes an excellent prof. really knows her material and always willing to help student who dont understand or have been sick. youll get dropped a letter grade for missing 3 or more classes.so go to class! but she is really helpful and understanding. she's one of the profs you can talk to on a normal/informal level. i wouldnt take eng from anyone else
A good teacher. She is really engaging and is passionate about her work. She really tries to help you understand the works. You end up getting a week off for every paper, and edit it numerous times. It's hard to get a low grade in this class if you pay attention and take suggestions.
Very interesting class! Professor teaches the class well and connects all the texts together. Tough, but engaging. Hit or miss
I thought she was the "easy" honors teacher, but she's not. She expects you to remember irrelevant details, rather than analyze the book. Also, she really does have favorites in the class.
if you have her as your teacher and its passed the drop date and your looking it up to find out if shes a good or not. YOUR COMPLETELY SCREWED .....
Hopper is amazing, smart, funny, and she?s the best professor for Honors rhetoric by far! TAKE HER IF YOU CAN! She grades fairly and gives you meaningful feedback on your essays (4-5 each semester). What she wants may be different from your high school English teachers, but you can adapt your writing style to fit what a college professor wants.
I have heard some bad things about Hopper, but my experience in her class was great! She grades the fairest out of all the Honors English teachers. She provides interesting insights into the books. Also, when going into conferences with her, I found that she valued originality and only offers advice on a few minor details. Take her class!!!
Best professor I could've asked for. She was so passionate about the material and really made it of interest to me. As a goth myself, it was awesome getting to meet another goth on a campus that's majorly lacking in subcultural diversity. Things I recommend: really pay attention when reading the text and take her advice into account when writing.
As long as you work hard shell work with you. Not an easy A but you will learn ALOT.
Had her for both sections of Honors English. Absolutely loved her; discussions were interesting, but be sure to keep a couple of your good points for your papers: she doesn't want repetition of discussion. Very available to help and conference; I even use her as a reference. Fabulous professor/class.
hate english but her discussions were fun sometimes. she does grade fairly on essays, she can tell when you procrastinate and grades accordingly. she is one of the best honors rhet teachers and she gives class a whole week off when essays are due. you need to put time into this class to get an A, it is challenging.
Hopper uses a discussion-lecture mix that keeps students involved in the class, while also getting across points we couldn't discover on our own. From what I gather, she is the Honors Rhetoric teacher that assigns the least work. Despite that, it is possible to learn a lot from her class.
very intelligent, insightful, and willing to help and accommodate. Hopper is definitely one of the best professors I have had in a while. I have been at 2 other schools, one an ivy, the other a nescac, and i find hopper one of the most engaging profs i have had.
I was the only student student in her 2306 class who hadn't taken her the semester before so I struggled at first. She grades in a very particular way, but she is adamant about students writing the correct way, not just "what she wants them to write." In the end you can earn an A if you work hard, and she is very encouraging. Favorite teacher!!
Definitely a tough class, but so worth it! Class discussion is great, and Professor Hopper is very straight forward in her assignments. Not a lot of busy work, but a lot or reading. Hopper is young and cool.
Professor Hopper is my far my favorite professor at SMU. I took her for DISC 1312 and enjoyed her so much that I took her again for DISC 1313. This class definitely requires that you work hard, but Professor Hopper is so helpful with everything. All of the papers directly reflect the discussions she leads in class. AMAZING professor!!!!!!!
Not too hard of a honors class. One of the easier honors teachers compared to everything I've heard. Kind, fair, and interesting enough. Take her.
Professor Hopper is so great! She really knows her stuff and wants you to know it too. She makes class discussions very clear and I always leave with a much deeper understanding of our texts. 4 essays all equally weighted, not an easy A but if you work hard, put time into it and meaningfully contribute to discussions, she'll like you
Professor Hopper is absolutely wonderful. She truly cares about each student succeeding as a writer, and is very constructive in her paper comments while still grading very gently.
Fantastic professor. She is so passionate about the material and extremely helpful. I highly recommend.
She gives very specific outlines as to what you need to do and complete. The trick to doing well in her class is participating thoroughly and attending her conferences. She is a tough grader; getting an A instead of an A- will take work; but she grades more for effort than content. Go to the A-LEC, get help from her during office hours.
Professor Hopper is by far my favorite English teacherprofessor I have ever had. She is very clear on what style she is expecting from her students. English is usually my least favorite subject but she made me love it. She conferences with every students before each paper is due. Very understanding woman. Class requires time for excellent papers!
Would take her again and again. She's a little tough on grading but it's worth it if you're at all interested in understanding literature. She has this course down to a science.
I literally cannot say a bad thing about Hopper!! She is the best teacher ever and expects you to work hard, but rewards you when you do! She's amazing and her lectures are so inspirational. She does expect you to go to class and do the reading, but offers great feedback on papers. Absolutely love her, definitely take her for DISC 2305 and 2306
This is one of my favorite SMU professors! She is clear with what she expects and rewards her students for accomplishing those goals. Going to class and meaningfully contributing will allow you to understand exactly what Professor Hopper wants you to learn and explain more in your essaysassignments. BEST DISC PROFESSOR!!!
My absolute favorite teacher at SMU thus far. Extremely helpful. Go to her for help and questions it WILL improve your grade. Put in the work and you'll be rewarded. Class topics are a lot of fun and reading assignments and lectures are very interesting. If I could take DISC over again I would in a heartbeat with her.
Professor Hopper is an AMAZING person and a great professor. Her expectations about what she wants in her papers are very clear and she is willing to meet with you to discuss your papers before you turn them in. As long as you are engaged in her lectures and do the reading, you'll know exactly what to include in papers. DEFINITELY TAKE HER!!!
Hopper may not be a geologist, but she still rocks. #TeamHopper
If you are considering taking another Professor for DISC, don't. Professor Hopper is by far the best Professor I have taken at SMU. She really is a Professor who cares. Amazing lectures. Incredible person. Highly recommended.
If you are an honors student, you will likely enjoy Professor Hopper. If not, she can be condescending. She has a tendency to treat her students like high school freshman- reads directions verbatim, demands attention, provides strict prompts to baby you through the class, perpetuates clichéd writing, and inhibits class discussion.
Fantastic professor. Tricky to get an A in this class, she really makes you work for it (as a good English professor should). Very intelligent and knows what she is talking about. Follow her grading criteria, show her you care and you should do well in this class. Will push you and truly make a positive impact on your writing if you let her.
You have to work and be prepared for every class. Very hard to get an A but if you do what you are told you will get rewarded.
She's pretty arrogant and condescending. Be ready to take amazing notes in class. There are 5 essays and you need to agree with her opinions in the essays and write what she wants you to write or you won't make a good grade. Her expectations are clear, though.
Her arguments are very one-sided. She tends to give good grades to students who write what she thinks and poor grades to those who have different opinions; she thinks her opinion is superior. Discussion in class is interesting but be ready to take a lot of notes and come prepared unless you want to be called out in front of the entire class.
Although the course description reads like a focused analysis of schools of thought in which discussion is critical, in actual fact the only way to succeed is to parrot her opinion. If your analysis is substantiated, well planned, and well-organized, but you lack her viewpoint, you will be deducted at least a letter grade. Very disappointing.
Hopper is very knowledgable and a nice person, but her class is painful. If you don't repeat her opinions in your paper as if they were your own then she will mark you down. If you say something she disagrees with in the discussions then she will call you out like you're wrong. This was a poor experience and I'd recommend finding someone else.
I took Hopper for DISC 2305 and 2306. I wasn't her biggest fan in 2305, but I absolutely loved her in 2306. There are 4 papers and a group presentation. Expectations are extremely clear and you can make an A if you put the work in. She really cares about her students and her job. I highly recommend her.
Hopper is the most insightful professor that I have ever had. The topics that she discusses in class are enlightening and will expand your world view. The class is challenging and demanding, but if you work hard to meet her expectations, you will make a good grade. She is understanding and willing to meet with her students to help them succeed.
This is her rubric: Very close to what she said in class A+. Everything else is bad. This doesn't make the class very hard bc all you have to do is take good notes based on what her opinion is and then regurgitate it in your own words. I think she's awesome though. I don't mind repeating her opinion because everything she says is insightful.
This professor is amazing. I highly recommend taking her course. She basically tells you exactly what to do for an A and it really is not that much that she asks for. Listen, take notes, follow the rubrics for essays. That's really it. I plan to take her 2306 course next semester as well because I enjoy her teaching style.
Professor Hopper is a pro at DISC courses. Her tried and true methods is what she sticks to, so depending on the type of person you are, this can be good or bad for you. Follow her instructions and lecture content to get an A on every assignment, including the research paper and the oral presentation. She's a nice person overall.
Hopper has a very specific way that she wants students to write: economy, clarity, and accuracy. If you do what she says and follow instructions you will be fine. She loves to hear herself talk and does not leave room for too much discussion. Very educated and has great things to say, but not the best English professor I've had.
This class is pretty reading heavy. She's a fairly tough grader, but she gives you a ton of feedback so you learn exactly what she wants. Her lectures were always interesting, and she brings a lot of insight to the table. She also cares a lot about the students and gets to know you! Overall, she's a great teacher!
Really good professor- easy essay grader
Good class. For the most part, as long as you dont try to argue against her points in your essay, you should be fine. She rarely gives out anything higher than an A-. One bad grade can cement you at a B, B+ if youre lucky. I still consider her better than the alternative DISC professors.
Professor Hopper has good discussions in her class and assigns interesting readings, but she gives no option for improvement with your essays. We were not supposed to go to her office hours to review graded essays and there was no opportunity to revise/edit any graded work. It is very difficult to make higher than an A- in this class.
Assigns moderate amount of reading- not too much. Paying attention to lectures and participating in discussions helps a lot. Very knowledgeable on subject and helpful in interpreting complicated readings.
There are lots of notes to take during class, but if you write your essays based on your notes you should be okay.
Hopper is knowledgeable and cares about students but can be a bit condescending and harsh sometimes. I still learned a lot from her class. The worst part is the grading. She doesn't give many A's, and your grade is based on just 5 essays. You can't pull your grade up above your average essay score. She isn't too accessible for paper help either.
If you listen in class and write based on what she says you should be okay. Her conferences are really valuable and useful. She's very knowledgeable and her discussions are in depth.
Gives a lot of good feedback for your essays. Offers conferences for certain essays, meaning you get the whole week off of class. Helps you improve a lot on your writing during conferences. Will occasionally call on people during discussions so make sure to read. Overall a good professor that is not super hard to make an A with.
Professor Hopper is, without a doubt, my favorite professor I've had at SMU thus far. I am a better writer now because of her. I was lucky enough to have her for both semesters, and she provided excellent feedback and was so encouraging. She's also very intelligent. I learned something in every class and always looked forward to DISC.
Vanessa Hopper is my favorite professor at SMU. I learned so much from her class and would recommend anyone to take it. It was the hardest class I took all year, but she is one of the best honors professors. She wants all students to succeed but does not hand out many A's. Read everything, take good notes and take adverting of asking her questions
Not a fan of this professor. She cares more about hearing herself talk then fostering good discussion. Will not let you come into office hours to discuss anything "already graded or discussed in class". There are better professors to take.
Her class can be interesting, but be sure to read the books. She will call on you in class. GO TO CLASS. Not an easy grader, but if you write exactly what she wants you'll be fine. THIS CLASS IS NOT DISCUSSION BASED. SHE LOVES TO TALK. She can be condescending, don't take it personally, just say what she wants to hear. If you get an A, congrats.
Professor Hopper made my freshman first semester horrible. She lectures during class about our readings and talks nothing whatsoever about actually improving her students' writing. She did not like my writing but never recommended any specifics to fix it. I learned nothing from this class and ended up dropping UHP. DISC 1313 helped me so much more.
She really cares about her students. Her class is difficult but she's just trying to push you to perform at your peak. She grades the first essay a little harshly which can screw up the rest of the semester, but just continue to work. Conference with her as much as possible.
She's pretty good at explaining topics and I learned a good amount in her class, but she's a moderately tough grader though I would say its generally fair. It's important to get along with her in her class, so try to just riff with whatever she says and you'll be okay if you read the books and can contribute in the slightest.
Expects you to basically just write down exactly what she talks about in class. Gives mediocre feedback and is a pretty tough grader. It's very hard to get an A, as messing up on even one essay (5 essays make up your entire grade) will pretty much sink your grade to the B-B+ range.
Super awesome and personable teacher. My writing improved a ton and it is always super clear what she wants from you in your papers. She will give you a few pages worth of explanation for what to do and as long as you don't stray away from the question you'll do well.
Composed of four papers and a final exam paper. Cannot skip class and she wants to see you focused and ready to work. However, she is very caring, engaging, and her expectations are very clear. Not too much reading and the class isn't overwhelming but do expect to put in effort, participate, and pay attention in class. Prof Hopper is great!!!
This was traumatic. If you enjoy writing as a passion DO NOT take this class. If Im going to write a paper on a topic, DO NOT let me be blind the entire time. Blind lead the blind. Thanks for the grade.
Tons of drama with limited instruction. HINT: to succeed you must mirror exactly what Prof believes. If you do so, you will do great. If you express your own opinions (no matter how well written), you will not succeed. No real instruction, just indoctrination into the ideologies. If you seek to improve your writing skills, take another course.
Lots of reading, but worth it. Hopper is engaging and will cold call on you, but overall a caring professor. Always makes sure to note the grade doesn't define one's success, and is super understanding. Definitely recommend her for your first honors class - my whole class is taking her in the spring again, if that makes a difference.
Professor Hopper is an amazing teacher, hands down. But sadly, most of her assignments are graded on her own opinions and what she believes is true. If you write something opposing her opinions, you get marked down. If you're okay with getting a B+ or even a B- and all for learning, go for it. If you need the high grade or GPA, don't take!
Grades super dumb. Once gave me a bad essay grade for not quoting correctly when she wouldn't let us use the book during the timed essay. socratic seminars are her interrogating a few students.
Don't fall victim to the pretense. The caring side is nothing more than narcissism in disguise. Listen to others. The secret to doing well is as stated: mimic back to the Professor what she believes. Your writing skills are secondary to anything else. Mirror the mantra, play to the false caring pretense, and you get an A.
Personally, did not like Hopper for WRTR. Graded pretty tough and feedback wasn't very insightful for moving your grade upwards. Felt prescriptive despite her insisting to write what you can support from the texts. Small thing, but you can't see the class average on canvas to know if everyone is getting hit or not.
Literally, the reason I dropped out of the honors program. She is the absolute worst, she berated me throughout our semester together, and instead of teaching me how to be better and improve my skills, she belittled me with her words. I truly hope she sees this message someday, because someone finally needs to put this professor in her place.
She was tough, but i feel like I actually became a better writer, and it kinda paid off in the end. If you can, take another professor, but she's not too bad if you pay attention and don't procrastinate.
Do not take her. Your entire grade is based upon papers. Her grading is impossible and this class will kill your confidence as a writer.
Interesting lectures, but very difficult paper grading and an absolutely draconian attendance policy made the class less enjoyable. If you were late (even by 1 minute) to more than 3 classes, you lost 5 points on your overall grade, and if you missed more than 3 you lost 10.
Classes are enjoyable and discussion heavy. Make sure you take very good notes on the common themes that come up during lectures because they show up in the essays. Pay attention to her feedback. Attendance is mandatory but was super understanding if you're unable to go provided you email her. Enjoyed her class and would definitely take her again.
This class definitely requires a time commitment, lots of reading. Make sure to annotate while you're reading the texts and take detailed notes during discussions and you'll do fine. She does conferences for essays and helps steer you in the right direction with your essays. Definitely not an easy A, but a really fulfilling and engaging class.
I loved Ms. Hopper. I'm quiet in discussions, but she always pulled a response out of me. She also wrote a kind, heartfelt letter explaining our grade for each essay. I looked forward to her class every day. The reading was heavy, but I found myself enjoying the books as we went. Great conferences. I'm disappointed not to have her in the spring.
I just wanted to give Professor Hopper the biggest shoutout. Her lectures gave me something I could never give back, a sense of narcissism I never knew I needed. Thanks Professor, I never knew how important it was to be a planet and a solar system! The pleasure was mine!
I have never wanted to honor a person more than to remember the limitless legacy of someone who sacrificed their time in the service of students who understood the meaning of dignity. Much more than dignity, courage, and much more than courage compassion to change the world of so many one moment at a time.
Super interesting Professor liked her class.
One of the worst professors at SMU. In order to pass, you must regurgitate back her same views and ideology. If you dare to disagree on anything, your grade will suffer. Truly, the secret to the positive reviews: be a broken individual or be a savvy one that mimics. If you are an independent thinker and want to stay that way, take another class.
Most amazing professor I have ever had, truly life changing!! 10/10 would take her if you can.
I loved Professor Hopper. If you establish a relationship with her, it will benefit you - as she really cares about each student individually. If you got class and go to your conferences, she will give you helpful feedback. Do your work and out in the effort and it will be reciprocated. Highly recommend.
She is a very kind and caring professor who goes above and beyond to provide feedback on your papers. She is very strict on attendance, but also is very patient if you are open to her and keep a good line of communication. One of my favourite professors at SMU!
She is the absolute worst, berated me throughout the semester, rudest professor I have ever known, hateful in her comments about my work, instead of teaching me how to be better and improve my skills, belittled me with her words. I truly hope SMU administrators see this and does something about it because no one deserves to be treated like this.
Grade consists of 4 papers all on bland subjects. Conferences don't help as much as you need and the class feels silly to go to since you don't do much besides do an off topic assignments that aren't graded. Feedback is poor and always feels rushed.
Rude and condescending, openly rolled her eyes at us if we asked a question she didn't like, way too much work for the class level and her expectation don't match her own effort she puts into classes. Do what they say, write everything she wants to hear from her own opinions rather than an analysis for the best grade possible. Or avoid her!!
DOesn't give good feedback, class is wasteful, bad professor.
is so rude to students and makes fun of them for being confused or getting questions wrong. She makes no effort to actually teach anything in office hours without being condescending. Her lectures are riddled with mistakes teaching us wrong. I hope SMU does something about her soon.
Professor Hopper was a godsend last semester. I took her for WRTR 1313 which isn't an option for some reason. I was scared by the reviews on here but she ended up being my favorite professor on campus. She truly cares about her students and doesn't want to see anyone fail. She expects the best from each of her students and makes class personal.
Rude, thoughtless, and insensitive insecure woman who cannot be bothered to do her job and teach, makes you write things out that are how she wants them rather than allows you to develop your own ideas. When you don't, watch out, she's vindictive on grades.
She is very difficult to deal with and highly irritable. Doesn't like questions and forced her opinions on you which you are forced to regurgitate for a good grade. Narcissistic and self-obsessed, constantly talks about her looks which is weird af.
horrendous and painful to sit through and tolerate, horrible grader and gives insulting feedback
She would be extremally vague with her feedback. She answers all of the questions you have with a question like, "well, what do you think?" and "Do you think that's right?" instead of telling you what you need to do to improve.
its embarassing how little she knows and that she holds the title of professor
She's a though grader but if you listen to her input in conferences you will get good grades.
Quite possibly the worst university professor I have had the displeasure of learning from. Incredibly abrasive and prone to throwing temper tantrums, You might think you are in 2nd grade again with her hissy fits.
She's awful. Strict and doesn't make sense. Likes to be the center of attention even though she's like 50yo or something. Really strange
Anal in her grading and just a bad teacher. Super emo and yet old hilarious.
