couldn't ask for a better prof!!
she's tough

Everytime I think of accounts I want to vomit as a result of her classes.
Very hard but now I know how to write a case.
She can't colour co-ordinate her clothes, so she takes it out on the class!
She's tough, but teaches very well and answers all questions clearly.
She was very clear in her teaching. I learned a lot.
Her tests are very difficult but shes an excellent prof
her teaching is clear , but the test is ...:(
She is a great proff, very bad tests though!
just like what everybody said..she's a very good prof but tough tests!!!
Excellent prof. ACC100 I got a C, and ACC406 I got a B+. Wow can you believe that!? Credit goes to Prof Magness for her clear explanations and wonderful helpfulnesss!
She's alright so far..I don't think anyone can get worse than Krystia. Her tests are pretty hard though.
a very hard prof..!! but offers unlimited help... often gives a review lecture b4 major tests... but quizzes and tests r hackfests.
Kind of monotone... But overall very good prof. Clear examples
Very thorough and consistent. Good Prof.
by far the ebest prof for accounting !

After I attended Anthony Chan's class, I realized how unclear she is! Soemtimes she doesn't treat students with respect!
That midterm was easy, guy. Just don't talk during her lectures...it makes her mad. And don't use the intercom phone and call her lecture class by mistake...she will hang up on you. Try to get her and not Blair Taylor.
About the most boring prof i've ever had...can't stay awake more that 15 mins in that class...neither can half the class....
really, one of the most boring teachers. teaches like its some military camp. hard to follow her.. makes the simplest concepts seem super hard.. overall.. ... get out of her classes if u can... itz somewhere u dont wanna be..
We luv Magness ... The best teacher ever. Clear powerpoint notes, easy to follow lectures, lots of examples, offers her time up and respects all students. Very helpful overall ... :)
She is a very helpful prof and that's what I like about her. Her lecture are clear and understanding. Overall, she's an excellent professor. For those who thinks she's horrible; stop talking in class and pay attention for once!
Horrible Prof. She's not giving me a chance to see my final and where i went wrong. She's being so difficult just for me to SEE where i went wrong. She's not helpful, and she's a pathetic prof. Prof's lack teaching ability... this prof is that poster prof
the worst, the least helpfull, the least competent prof. EVER. whoever let her teach must be an idiot. AVOID HER AT ALL COST if you ever wish to pass accounting, because she will do all in her power to FAIL you.
I know Accounting is just boring despite what techer you have. But to be honest, she is not a very good teacher. She's a little mean and annoying. She needs to treate her students more like adults rather than little children.
really knows how to teach..!
Magness gets down to business. Acc is a boring class, whoever your prof is, but Magness is very helpful to people that go see her in her office. And really, if you don't like being treated like a kid, shut up during the lectures.
Magness is a great prof. Clear lecture notes and puts them on BB. She is very easy to understand. She makes acc fun and likes to help students…go to her office hours if u need help
she really knows her stuff. her notes are the greatest ..doesnt make the course intimidate u. notes are really clear, and are always posted on BB. she is always around for help and lets u know through communicating her office hours every lecture! =)
A prof with normal ability and less creative in teaching. I think she's not fair in making criteria to the students.
Really tries to be as helpful as possible, but lectures are horrendously boring and her marking scheme is really tough. The final is long, but if you study hard you can bring your mark up a lot.
she's not bad. accounting is a crappy course no matter how u take it, but she's ok. kinda cute how she seems to have dressed in the dark, lol. busted winter boots and all...
Worst proff esp. for accouning..dresses like a man..looks like a man..ewwww. doesn't know how to explain at all..EXAMS ARE KILLER!..failing av'g..1 mark=1% give us achance... just make ur life easier and switch to anthony chan's class. Now thers a good proff (chan!)
u assume teachers are nicer in person, when i went to talk to her, she was horrible, criticised me and used sarcasm, funny thing is im doing good in the course. stupid teacher far as i see it.
how u make a university class of 100 and something feel like elementary school kids is best learned from this prof ..
She's not bad, got a decent mark. Shes defiantly not the hardest teacher, she's in the middle.
Oh dear god...stay away...far away...
Well, all I can say is that she's pretty gd. To do well in the class, just read the text, do what she assigned and try her old midterm MCs on blackboard before test. And u will be fine
well,if you think a mid-term average of 54% is good, then stay. i don't even want to think again at the final exam....
This prof is not all that bad. People think she is difficult because they dont do the work and consequently do poorly. I did not do much work and got a B-. Just do your hw and you should be okay.
Overall she's okay,I just don't like how she teach, you don't learn much from her and you need to depend on the textbook. Her midterm is ok,not too hard, hope final won't be hard too!
If you intend on staying in the Accounting major, take Magness. It is very sad how people want school to be easy and then when they study for the CA they fail. Do it once, not twice. Shes the way to go if you want high quality results. I got an A+ and studied 2 hours a week. You can too.
some students are ok with her but it seems like most r not. but as a uni student, we must adopt to it (for ur own benefit) and not wasting time writing comments about him/her here...i worked very hard and got a 3.92 GPA in 1st semester^^ "Work hard and Prosper!"
Worst prof ever.. she can't teach.. and she couldn't provide a proper outline for the exam; furthermore, she is very boring.. you will literally have to push yourself to stay awake
i don't know why ppl dun like her, but she's a good prof. She's very clear in her lectures, and she always tries her best to answer students' questions. I would choose her again next year if she teaches another course. Her final was pretty easy. She's not even strict like Chan is, but yet ppl say Chan is easy....0_o
The only bad thing is that the textbook isn't well written. The good news are the the professor is very helpful and nice, and her tests are easy, especially the final exam. Study her notes, practice her assigned homework questions, and spend extra time to review the materials, and you will do very well
unreasonable, boring, rude, GET OUT OF HER CLASS WHILE YOU CAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Horrible. Her tests and midterms are worth 1% for 1 mark, so this puts students under great pressure. Work hard in this class and try to stay awake in her class.
It's a real kick in the teeth when you do absolutely everything right with a B average and fail the course because you bomb the final. None of her assigned questions, notes, or anything were any help for that ridiculously difficult final exam. Definitely wouldn't take her again
Probably a class you want to avoid. The book is written horrible, they should use Wiley instead of Pearson. The exam was extremely hard. Nothing compared to the midterms she gave out. Too many tricks that we weren't exposed to in the class. She knows her stuff but the way the material is laid out is bad. Nothing against the prof.
she knows her stuff but she is just not good at teaching it. she is very monotone and boring which makes it hard to learn. and she doesnt explain things well. she just shows you and expects you to get it right away. and having her class at 8am on a monday morning in the 500 seat auditorium didnt help either. try to get gekas. hes way better
I actually didnt mind acc100 becasue i had a really good teacher who was clear and insightful. But Vanessa has to be the WORST. I went from an A in acc100 to dropping acc406 with magness. TIP: take acc406 with any other teacher but VANESSA MAGNESS!!
Vanessa presents the course material in a very understandable manner. Her lectures explain the chapters well, however I found that the examples she gives sometimes aren't challenging enough to prepare us for the textbook questions or the midterm/finals. Go to a tutor a few times to practice exam like questions and you'll be prepared for the exams.
I had to take a tutor to understand the concepts of this course. It is very hard to capture what shes saying in such a big class.
Magness is a very knowledgable and educated person. She definetly knows her stuff. Although it may be difficult to learn this course in the lecture hall, she is very clear and gives practical examples. Midterms are almost exactly identical to in class problems so make sure you go to class or at least review her slides. Finished with an A.
She is by far one of the best profs I have ever had (at both u of t or ryerson). May not overly entertaining or funny during lectures, but tries to ensure every student understands the material clearly. She is constantly updating the website and is eager to help during office hours. Wish I could take another course with her!!
God... this class was made so much harder by Magness... although she is helpful after-hours, she is unbearably boring while teaching. Deserved an A for the amount of effort I put in to this class - but she had an extremely difficult and deliberately trickly midterm. Beware - if you want better tips/ explanaitions - go with Gekas
The material is hard but she is great at explaining it. Tries hard to prepare you and help you pass. Midterm is VERY hard, final was easier. I would take her again.
Pay close attention because the tone is monotonous, so have large consumptions of caffeine before attempting her class She's passionate, but can be scatter-brained at times.
I like her, she's very helpful during her office hours. Other than that her midterm is HARD!
Honestly, I found that she would ramble on and on about random jazz that RELATES to what we're doing but doesnt really help with our exams... Found myself skipping every class and just studying at home off HER slides... Same knowledge earned...
This class is all about Algebra! If you remember how to solve for unknown variables you will do great in this class. Although, the material is tough for most, Magness tries her best to make it as simple to learn as possible. Best bet is to form a study group for this one. Good luck!
Tough marker but Very knowledgeable in her field.
personally thought her writing style in the exams weren't organized. it makes you having to read the paper 3 times before you can start writing the answer. however, she did tried her best to prepare students for the exam. she's okay overall. i wouldn't mind take her again in the future.
IF YOU HAVE HER, SWITCH NOW.
She is definately a hard marker. She has no sympathy for any of her students. You MUST attend class and follow the assigned material. Overall if you could take another prof. do it NOW! She's very boring, and is very anal about grammer in an accounting exam? Failed Final by 1 mark, would not bump me up even if my life depended on it.
Took ACC twice, once with vanessa and now with Maurizo (much better). Simply put, she is a very, very hard marker her exam contains a lot of reading!!!! Do not expect to get over 80 on the exam. Avoid taking ACC410 during the semester no matter what prof you have she will write the final exam. I would suggest doing this course in summer school.
If this course were a video game the difficulty levels would be easy, medium, hard, impossible, then Vanessa. don't bother taking this course in the regular year i suggest you take it in the summer or in the chang school
In all honesty, she is a really good teacher. she explains the material really well and if you attend her class every week, you'll grasp it easily. The downside to her is that her midterm is absolutely brutal beyond comprehension. she made the final a lot easier though so try to just get through that midterm.
In all honesty, she is not a good teacher. She does not explain concepts well and perhaps even complicates them more than she has to. I do not recommend this teacher. Simply put, there are better accounting teachers at Ryerson.
Not a very good teacher.
She is very misguided with her expectations of students. For students that are pursuing any field, I suggest not taking her class. You need to pass the final to pass the course, I got 24/50. She didn't bump me.
She needs to take extra classes on teaching methodologies. The content of her classes is not related to exams. Somebody in Ryerson must audit her methods of exams. She doesn't even bother to mark the whole test, if you fail the first part...Shouldn't I be able to know all my mistakes, so that I can study with focus to fix the gaps?
Textbook for this course sucks. Midterm was hard. Wished her slides were better. Her teaching method isn't the greatest. I find she unnecessarily complicates things and her lectures should be more focused on course content than the "what ifs". The concepts are actually simple and straight forward if you sit down and learn them yourself.
To be honest, she doesn't seem to teach the concepts very well. The midterm was very difficult. Reading the textbook helps a little but the questions in the midterm are nothing like what you learn in class. Take this class in the spring/summer term because you need to devote all your time to pass this course.
AVOID HER AS YOUR PROF! she marks insanely hard. She's a pretty decent teacher, so you could still attend her lectures, but for your own good, get a prof who isn't her!
Not a very good professor in my opinion because she "hides" behind her laptop and fails to teach what is on the slides very well. She also advises students to get help at the Math centre which I do not understand. Is she not paid to teach? Finally, she complicates concepts more than is necessary. I do not recommend her.
If this class were a game the difficulty levels would read easy, medium, hard, insanity, and then Magness. Her midterm is ridiculous, if you do not pass the first part she won't bother marking the second part. Your better off paying the $400-500 in chang school because with her you have a very low chance of passing.
Not an easy course. I remember magness was prob one of the best profs to get a decent chance of passing 410 in comparison to beavis. This class requires a lot of studying but the material is simple steps that are memorized. For all those who are complaining you just didn't study enough. Try to get good w/ her she is the interim head for acc depart
I've had Beavis, Else Grech and just recently Vanessa magness for ACC, Magness is by far the best of these three. Her midterm and exam were fair and her online notes made class attendance almost unnecessary. People who say she's bad haven't had Else or Beavis! Barely passed accounting with else and Beavis, just got an A with magness
Unlike other accounting teachers I've had in the past (had else grech and Joel Shapiro so far) Magness is very clear and moves at a good pace. Else's "web" of notes she drew on the board every class was impossible to follow! Magness posts clear, concise study notes on BB for every class, that was all I studied for midterm/exam and came out with A-!
She can't put the right numbers down on the board even though she has the solution right in her hand. I had to teach myself for the midterm. All she does is pick on students to answer questions and give her the numbers. Doesn't explain a thing. This is coming from a person who has never written something negative about a prof on any site.
This class should be avoided for sure if it is with Magness. Takes weeks in order to reply to emails and when she does, her replies are vague. Constantly tells us to check "discussion" boards for course content, but does not reply to those either. She reads off the slides during class and her explanations aren't clear. take my advice and avoid her!
She cannot teach, her examples are so confusing and extensive. She reads off slides, and the slides are useless when studying for tests. When you ask for help, she gives you vague answers. She will focus on the main parts of the chapter in lectures, but you will be given the minor parts of the chapter on the test. Tests are tough, and too short!
Very smart lady, knows exactly what she is doing. She makes you work for your grades but is worth it at the end.
Doesn't really teach in class instead just shows you answers to problems from the textbook without explaining any of it unless someone asks for an explanation. She has provided the class with wrong answers to questions we cover from the book. Takes forever to upload marks. Try your best to avoid having her as your prof.
She only show questions and solutions without explaining inclass - she always providing wrong numbers. Textbook is useless, her tests are very difficult. I read the whole textbook and it didn't help. She criticizes you when you need help for explanation. Lectures always overrun.
Accounting is a beast in general. She was so boring that I skipped well over 80% of my classes. I guess that's why I didn't do well
If you get put in this class you should expect to be having to drop it mid way through. She is a very hard marker, and blames the class for not understanding rather than her lectures that speed through the slides and her confusing way of teaching. I spent some extra money on a tutor and even then I ended up having to drop the course.
Good at teaching, tests are impossible. Average for our last test was 47%- thats all.
I loved having her as a professor. She always explained everything in detail, was very patient and answered every question about the material. Gave really good feedback and review after tests and midterms. Amazing professor, would love to have her again for another course! :)
Great professor. The lectures are conducted at a comfortable pace that allowed me (and probably other ESL students) to digest difficult cost accounting concepts. Clear, concise, and seems dedicated to students' success. She's willing to take time and explain key concepts in problem. Only feedback is to elaborate more on solutions in a meaningful wa
Vanessa is clearly knowledgeable about this course. Sometimes is slightly confusing but just ask and she is usually able to help. Midterm takes a long time to get returned. She does call on random people which is nerve-wracking but accepts "I don't know" and moves on. Attending lecture is very necessary.
Don't trust the earlier ratings. She is a great prof, you just need to put in a good amount of effort, but that should be expected.
Clearly knowledgeable but severely lacking as a professor for AFA 200. Expects students to know the material prior to class, where she will run through examples without adding any value whatsoever. Caveat Emptor.
Ah very hard to put this nicely. She's not a good prof at all... Almost everyone had her but sat in Else's class. She never knew what she was talking about, did not prepare you for the tests and exams, pretended you never asked the question when she didn't know the answer, and office hours were extremely hard to reach her with. Switch out NOW.
I was in Else's class but attended her classes as well. Vanessa was nothing but nice and helpful to me even though she knew I wasn't in her class - she explained accounting to me, picked up my pen when I dropped it, and gave me extra paper to practice problems on when I ran out. Vanessa is not the problem here - it's you not putting in the work
Vanessa was extremely nice(after half the class dropped). Her quizzes can sometimes be really difficult especially if you don't know all the ins and outs of the chapter. Also, write with a pencil because she goes all over the board(bring an eraser). Never the Less, she knows her stuff . Visit her office hours for optimal learning!
Vanessa is an amazing professor and passionate about what she does but she can be extremely tough in terms of her weekly quizzes because they required you to know the entire chapter and processes all by yourself just through the readings. By the end of the semester though, she started being more easy and helping students out. Her exams were fair
She is an amazing prof. She teaches very well. However, you will not do well in the class unless you read prior to the lectures and make comprehensive notes. Be sure you fully understand the chapter that will be taught during that class. Also, her quizzes are no walk in the park - another reason to make sure you know the chapter's concept throughly
Vanessa is a great prof! She answers my questions patiently in class, helped me with even non-Accounting related tasks which shows a great deal of character. She is so much better than Else.
