Does everything in her power to give students a good chance at passing. Sometimes does NOT say what the book says--causes massive confusion, but is entirely willing to make adjustments if necessary. Does spend a lot of time presenting a Black worldview.
She is an awesome teacher, goes above and beyond to try and get everyone an A in her class! She is very funny, but you better pay attention while she is lecturing.
Very awesome teacher! I didn't have to take a final! If you average a 90% (which is impossible not to average this) you don't have to take the final! She gives essay questions in advance so you can study them on every test which are 20 points extra credit. Awesome teacher! :)
VERY EASY CLASS...take her class if you can..you have to try real hard to not pass this class..you are guaranteed an A in her class if you are there and do the work...no tests in her class...

This was one of the worst classes I had ever taken. The Instructor encouaged the students in the class not to get along with each other. This class was more trouble than it was worth. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! IT IS A WASTE OF MONEY & TIME!!!!
This class is easy because attendance is rarely needed. I attended every class and I will admit most was a waste of time. She has it worked out so she never has to teach anything. The whole class is students presenting group projects and discussing the book. She can be offensive to white people because she believes minorities are victims.
The book for this class was interesting. The lectures were not. Dr. Perkins was not an easygoing professor. If it were not for reading the book, I do not think I would have got anything out of the class because the group projects did not help my understanding of the course topics.
Dr. Perkins is an awesome teacher and is very willing to help! i recommend her to anyone interested in socology!
This teacher is the most biased teacher I have ever had. She talks about how all minorities are a victim and during the election she was clearly biased. All she could do before class was indoctrinate her students. She should NOT be a teacher - she should be a "community organizer" since she loves Obama so much.
Taking any of her other classes like SOC101 is okay but DO NOT TAKE her SOC140. She expects you to teach yourself by reading the chapter and summarizing it. The 3 group projects are tough and she's not very clear about assignments. It's like she's so busy teaching and grading her other classes she dumps the work on us to make it easier on her.
THE EASIEST class i've ever taken. She gives great notes. did not to buy the book. Just copy down the notes she puts up, review them before the test and you'll get an A.
HATE IT! I learned absolutely nothing and didn't like at all how the class was structured. I prefer to be taught and quizzed, not struggle to create powerpoints on stuff I never learned. She never taught us the material. She's not clear on assignments and grades the group presentations harshly. This is coming from someone who passed with an A.

Ok seriously, if you want to get an A in a soc 101 class, this is the teacher to take. The tests are super easy because there is nothing that she tests you on that she didn't already teach. All you have to do is take notes. You don't even need the textbook. If u maintain an A average in the tests, you don't have to take the final. Great teacher:)
Very fun class, and not difficult at all!
She does not follow her own criteria for grading, attendance or discussions. She is willing to hear her student?s opinions; however she lies and also factually incorrect on many issues. She is corrdial with students and her class is fairly strait forward. Keep track (write is down) of what she says because she will change it on you at some point.
I passed her class with a C. But in all honesty I could have passed her class with a B or an A I just started slacking towards the end. She was a very nice and helpful towards me...but she did seem to have some favorites in the class..and some not so favorites. I would say take her for the easy grade.

Do not take her. She has her personal favorites and is not afraid to let it show. She is rude to students that ask questions that she does not understand and then tends to ignore them after the fact. She does not take criticism well at all so be prepared for attitude the rest of the semester.
WORST 100 LEVEL TEACHER EVER! She plays favorites just like everybody on this website has said. She's great at being awkwardly silent. Ridiculous assignments, outdoors, trust me! Tests questions are all broad strokes, easy to get wrong. Made me anxious being there every morning.
Easy class. Do your work, do the extra credit, and you'll skip out of the final. She seemed distant at times, but I would too if the people I taught in class were close minded. People can take offense with the actuality of things, but that's just the material. Welcome to sociology
Dr. Perkins is totally one sided, and has poor judgment. If anyone is close minded it?s her. I would not recommend taking her for any sociology classes.
I really didn't like how class was set up or how she graded things. She has the class set up so she can focus more on her other classes and be lazy with ours. It requires more work on the students part just so its easier for her to grade. Class consists of a series of presentations that she expects to be perfect. Take someone else, like Harasha.
HaHa I agree with many of the comments. She really knows her lectures front to back, I mean she is impressive! however if you ask a question look out because she is always right, gives you the silent treatment, and hates being interrupted. She gives out tons of extra credit(always ask her to clarify) on test days because the tests are so hard!
It's ok to take her SOC101 but trust the comments, her SOC140 is no party. Lots of busy work to keep you occupied so she can pretend she's teaching the class. What really sucks is that it doesn't really teach you anything that you couldn't learn on your own. And if she doesn't like your group, she's more likely to grade you hard. Harsh teacher.
She is an alright teacher, she tends to favor many students and doesn't like to be interrupted. She has sloppy handwriting and always talks about her life. Her tests are easy straight from the notes, Overall she is alright.
This teacher was okay...I guess. For her SOC 140 class all she did was talk about how everyone and everything out there is **** and white people are the enemy. It was almost a joke. We had an assignment where we "were white" and now are a different race. How much money should we get compensated? That was the assignment. Ridiculous.
Great Professor!! Went into class reading all the horrible comments thinking it was going to be horrible but actually was one of my best classes this semester. Do the work and be there and you'll do fine.
Do the work ask questions when needed and you'll pass. She keeps the class interesting and always has funny related stories to the topic.
Great Professor. Whites were the only students with a problem. I think it?s because they can?t handle the research that was found. What we learned in this class is nothing new. The only difference is the info what presented in an academic way. Lets be real, minority in fact has it harder. The problem is so many white people ignore this problem.

I feel like i wasted my time and money with this profeor. I am a hard working students and have never had problems with any profesors, but her.She does not teach, hates to be interupted and the students have to pretty much teach the class, boring.
I hated this class. I thought it would be fun and easy, but I missed a test due to a family illness and she made it very difficult for me to make it up and then accused me of trying to get extra time to study by missing it. She is rude, mean, and not very intelligent. I hated her class and would not recommend her to anyone.

Some of you may want easy grades. If so, take her. If you want to be intellectually challenged, pick something else. This class is about diversity, but really it has nothing to do with anything other than the professors personal(unsupported) beliefs on society and people. As a senior at Arizona State,retrospectively this class is my only "regret"
I thought Dr. Perkins was intimidating. I also thought she lacked the communication skills necessary to convey her assignments. When students would ask a question she would at times role her eyes and say something condescending resulting in students not asking questions for fear of reprisal. I think the subject matter is important though!
Terrible teacher, very narrow minded and you are graded on your opinion, and that is not how it should be. She only see's things her way. From 28 students to only 7 in the class. There is a reason for that.
I really enjoyed Dr Perkins class, had to drop for personal reasons. I am taking same class with her this fall 2012. I enjoyed the challenge and discussions! I think she is a great teacher!
Rude and full of bad attitude. Very impolite to white students and only sees information her way. She is better at talking down at students than encouraging debate and free speech. Don't suggest a different opinion than hers, you will just be wrong.
Please don't waste your time with this professor. She is rude and makes this class very hard to follow. She is easily irritated by questions and makes you feel stupid for asking any. If you are taking this class, I suggest taking it under Jack Peterson instead. You will learn more and his method of teaching is so much easier to understand

Great teacher,but frequently was angry at students who interrupted and did not pay attention. If you pay attention and take notes, it is an easy class and if you get 100% on all your previous tests there is no final.
She makes it impossible to fail her class. All the notes she provides during her lectures are exactly what she puts on our tests and gives us plenty of time to prepare for them. She also gives us tons of opportunities for extra credit and is so gengenerous and kind. Provides two options for your tests in order to make testing easier. 1010!!

This is an easy A, but I would not recommend this teacher. She is very rude and has offended nearly every student in the class at one point. She canceled class the last two weeks of class and did not cover the final unit. I am not set up for success for my future sociology classes because of this, as this class was the fundamentals of sociology.
I LOVE. Dr. P. She is very easy and makes this class simple. i would recommend her to ANYONE. there are NO test in this class. there are 4 group projects and she gives you time in class to work on them. you will need the book. there is a reading assignment due every weds. but its only 5-7 bullets on a small section of the chapter. take her class!!
She is absolutely horrible. She always leaves early and it feels like she does not want to be there. Very rude and gives false information. Said that mental health is in vogue in the upper class??? Does not give a lot of guidelines on assignments and then grades it harshly because you did not follow the guidelines she never gave you.
i took for for sociology 101, a 3 hour class. she let us go early we had extra credit but you had to watch a documentary and write a paper which wasnt fun we did group projects which were easy and we had homework pretty often but nothing too hard her class discussions are fun because you can just talk DEADLINES ARE DEADLINES even if u had aids

Great Professor! Yes there were group presentations, but no tests. The homework were discussion questions of which the answers were given in class, you just add a personal touch. Never opened my book! She is stern when she needs to be, show respect you'll get respect. Don't talk while she is talking.. simple and to the point.
Very opinionated and very condescending to the students if their views didn't match hers. Often times she got very confusing and assigned A LOT of group projects that were replacements for tests. Not hard of a class but I did not enjoy her class at all. Barely opened the book she told us was essential for the class. Would never take her class again
Doesn't give tests, just 3 team presentations throughout the semester. Monthly discussion questions assigned for points and gave several opportunities for extra credit. Cancels class frequently and doesn't show up on days we were working on presentations.
There are no tests. To make up for no tests there are group projects with presentations. There is a huge emphasis on race and racism. She is more or less a bit scatterbrain.
Terrible! Instead of tests she did group projects & she didn't see my name that was on the paper so she didn't give me credit for the project. I went to her and told her the mix up & she said she would fix it & never did. She never told you your grade & wasn't on canvas so I didn't know & got a B in the class even though I had A's in everything.
If you go to class and keep up with the reading and your group projects that are pretty easy you should be fine.

It was easy to get and maintain an A in this class. But she is also very disorganised and is usually kinda unprepared. Doesn't keep up with her dates and stuff, which she is strict about even tho
She is disorganised I suppose, never answered her emails. Extremely hard to find for office hours. Forgot dates and papers and all that, but it's an easy A and she's kinda funny. She also is very open to discussions during class and that's pretty cool.
She is extremely nit-picky when grading. Her class consisted of 4 main group projects and some homework here and there. She gave a lot of extra credit opportunities. Easy A, if you pay attention.

Best teacher I've had thus far, hands down. Her assignments are not only creative and unique, but really cause you to think about things differently - I took more from this class than any this semester and am looking forward to starting the next level class with her next week!
Absolutely LOVED taking her class. She is very knowledgeable on the subject and is very sincere as well. No tests, but papers are expected. Also, be expected to work in groups which isn't too bad. Made topics very interesting and her explanations really helped!
Dr. Perkins is a great professor. Her class consisted of 4 group power point projects. There are a couple papers and some discussion questions but they are easy and you get a lot of time to do them. She doesn't take attendance. She teaches directly out of the textbook so you do not need to buy it. Overall, it is an easy A.

All you need to do is show up to class, participate, and get your group project done to present them in class. No quizzes or tests at all. Pretty easy class as long as you do your part and know the material you are presenting in class.
Shes an amazing teacher, but be sure to keep up with your presentations and homework cuz shes a tough grader. If you follow her requirements exactly, the class will be a breeze.

Dr. Perkins at Mesa Community College is a teacher that will make you do a lot of group projects. She always asks specific questions all the time during a presentation and makes it feel like shes not teaching you at all as if youre teaching her. The class is frustrating from her group work and forces you to present.
Very unorganized. She said a book was mandatory for the class and I barely opened it throughout the semester! Group projects were annoying to deal with, and was not very specific on some of the work we had to do. She is also opinionated on whatever she believes is right so your opinions wont matter, you have to just say hers are correct.
Pretty much didn't teach the subject matter at all. (I had taken this class with a much better professor last fall but failed because of service learning conflicts and I have yet to see any overlap) Not to mention it felt like the only thing she ever did is push her own political agenda on students for credit. IF YOU THINK DIFFERENTLY YOU WILL FAIL
Lots of group projects which I didn't mind. She was able to help during and outside of class. Lots of cancelled days which was nice because we got time to work on projects and the projects were given with a lot of time to do. Only negative is we spent money on a book I didn't use once.
A very easy course to take. Be ready to do group projects! If you are not good with working with others and doing research then is class isn't for you. Overall Dr. Perkins is very caring and understanding if you do what you're asked to. Only down side is having people in your group projects to not do any work. If you need this class take it!
Very rude and nit picks your work. You better hope you have good group members. If they are useless, everybody in the group is going to suffer. She interrupts students in the middle of presentations which is not normal for a presentation. Always cancels classes and sometimes never in her office during office hours. Worst professor I ever had.
Good luck. I had Prof Perkins twice in my time at MCC... she was nice enough but does NOT accept late work, even if you tell her weeks in advance that you'll be missing class, it's your fault. Group project heavy & like the other comments said, if your group members slack; you all fail. I wish I had taken SOC with someone else!
This is not a hard class, there is a decent amount of note taking, but it is on the lower end for a college course. Professor Perkins is one of the most understanding professors I've had, and is always willing to help with assignments. I definitely recommend this course!
Very easy A. You take notes on the given chapters once every other week and it takes 3 hours tops if you are doing super detailed notes. Quizzes/Tests are straight from the reading. Easy grader and you get full credit if you follow directions. The concepts in this class are a joke but any SOC101 class is full of socialist propaganda.
The class is easy, but can be time consuming because of the chapter notes. As long as you turn in detailed chapters notes, you'll do fine. Maybe it was just an issue for me, but there were several assignments I turned in that she said wouldn't load for her. So I had to submit several assignments more than once. She's also slow to respond to emails.
Just an annoying class, I don't think it is her fault. I would take her again if there were no other professors with raving reviews.
The class was fine, really easy. Just a lot of random busy work and textbook reading, she doesn't teach any of it herself, and she wont accept late work. I missed a quiz because of a family issue; I was fine to get a 0 if I could just review the content, but she wouldn't open it for me to review so I guess I will never know what was on the test.
This professor is the worst professor I have ever had. She gives zeros on assignments you have clearly submitted. She just decides some assignments get zeros and somehow I end up with a C
Not a difficult online course. Took 8 week course--overwhelming at first, gets easier. A lot of reading + documentaries (not made by her) but they're interesting. Discussion boards were fun, helped to learn material. Quizzes and assignments once/twice a week but not hard. Doesn't take long to grade. Overall a good course & would recommend.
