She's willfully ignorant, not to mention spiteful. Everyone thought she was pretty lame.
I enjoyed the material and never missed a class. The reading is pointless and a waste of time but if you MEMORIZE the notes word for word, you will do well. There is nothing conceptual about this class. I got a B+ and I studied my ass off.
I didnt think she was lame at all. the lectures were very clear and not too hard to follow...and when they were she was really good about going slow and clarifying everything. just talk to her or email her if you need more help..shes really nice.If you make notecards for the lecture slides it is really easy to do well. I did just that and got an A.
AMAZING teacher! One of the most helpful and understanding profs I've had at UCSB. She really knows her stuff- just attend lecture to follow along with the notes and you will be fine. Very interesting material.
AMAZING TEACHER!! She explains everything very clearly-flashcards are key-hardly ever read book and was ok-more questions about book on 1st midterm than final-THIS CLASS IS AWESOME!!!!!!
great teacher! tests Q's are straight from lecture-almost word for word. barely used book. got an A. interesting material. study lecture notes and you'll be fine
It could be said she was 'willfully ignorant' by people who wanted to compare their own drug-taking experience with the scientific pharmacology. My friends and I loved her. There's a lot of detail but read the lecture notes she posts online and go to lecture and you'll do great.
Hard class, tons of information and a lot of memorizing. Going to class is usefull but hard to stay awake or attention for that long. Woods does not give any studyguides or directions for tests, which makes it very hard to study. Tests are not easy and very detailed.
This class is difficult & requires memorizing many details. However, Woods' lectures are very clear & helpful, & her slides (which are posted online before lectures) are very well organized & clear. The 2 midterms & 1 final are mostly based on lectures, but partly on the book (Physiology of Behavior), which is somewhat difficult to follow.
I would say keep up with your lectures rather than reading the book, but read the book for a more detailed/clearer understanding. If it's not covered in lecture, skip over the info in the book. The midterms/final is mostly on the lectures. The curve in the class will help your grade alot.
Loved everything about her. Only downer is that she goes through the material quiclkly. Don't even need to buy the book- everything that appears on the test is in her slides. Go to class, take good notes on her print out slides, study, and you're good!
Love her as always! She is fabulous.
It's definitely a more challenging class but she really tries to help her students understand the material. I would study the lecture notes rather than the book. The tests are definitely fair and straight forward. I would recommend her for this class.
This class was extremely difficult, but what I expected from "behavioral endocrinology". The average was 75%, and she seemed to think this was pretty good. Barely any questions were from texbook, all lecture. If you want to pass, record her lectures and go over powerpoints many times.
Love her class!!
Had her for 3 different classes. She's good for psychology, but terrible for biopsych courses. Why? Because she attempts to teach a mechanism from a bunch of poorly summarized bullet points. I enjoy learning, especially bio, but these are unbearable! Not only that, but she contradicts the book! Avoid Avoid Avoid if you actually plan to learn!
I absolutely love Professor Woods! I am currently in the third class she's taught and I've loved every course. She's giving me a letter of rec for grad school, and she's helped me through every course. She's awesome - take advantage of office hours!
Absolutely love her classes, had her for 3, 102 & 116 as well. Pretty much everything is straight out of lecture slides-go to class! She expects you to grasp and apply concepts. Tests are hard but fair. Her classes tend to overlap some which helps. She is very approachable and helpful if you are confused. I always know what to expect on her tests.
Favorite teacher and class by far at UCSB- she is very clear and good at explaining things, her tests can be challenging but are extremely fair- if you study the slides you will get an A
I thought this class was pretty easy. Pay attention in class everything was off the lecture slides for the exams. 1 midterm 1 final for summer. I have taken 2 classes with her and this was much easier than her Psych 111 class.
Probably the worst professor I've had at UCSB. I've had her for 3 classes now.. her classes are not hard at all, but she is so bad. She contradicts the book, herself, her slides, her syllabus.. I sit through her lectures or talk to her in office hours and think how did THIS lady become a professor.. anyways, easy classes, but terribly spent time.
woods sucks. her slides suck (and are stolen from another university) and her textbook choice is even worse. she rambles about sex for 3 weeks then rushes through all the fun stuff. I wish kippin was still teaching this class.
Only take this class with her if you hate yourself. This class is 0% psychology and 100% biology. The material is really difficult and she doesn't make it any easier. The test are 100 times harder than anything we learn in class and she already expects us to fail. If the mean of a midterm is 65, it doesn't mean make the next one harder.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken. The first half of the class is 100% bio and there is a ridiculous amount of info you have to memorize. There are no assignments, so it's solely grades on 2 midterms and a final. The test questions were unnecessarily difficult for what is already a difficult subject matter.
Hated the class, hated her, hated the subject. Beware, wait for the next quarter to take Psy3 with someone else. 010 would not reblog.
She goes over the slides way too fast in lecture and skips around too much between slides. She confuses more than she explains. Would wait for another quarter to take this class with someone else
So..I am a 3.9 student and this class was the first class i received a C+. Her tests are very straightforward, but she makes them hard. REALLY HARD. She tries everything to trick you, and she goes over the materials way too quickly. If she says one sentence in class, that is "fair game" on the test. Your grade is purely based off of tests.
Woods was a decent teacher. She came across condescending at times, but was usually pretty helpful when asked. She was a tough grader.
Woods knows a lot about her field, but in lecture she only reads off her powerpoint which is not helpful because anyone can read. Lectures are boring because of this, and you barely need to go because she puts the slides online. The class rubric makes sense and if it wasn't for her horrible teaching, the class shouldn't be too hard to pass.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS WITH WOODS! Wait until the next quarter and take it with anyone else besides Woods. Her exams are ridiculous, the class mean was 65% and the mean on the final was 72% with a massive curve! She reads entirely off her slides, so no point in attending class, they are online. I learned an awful lot in the course, yet did poorly.
I enjoyed Professor Woods, she does go fast and read from the slides but its not in a monotone way. She expands and is enthusiastic. The course is very dense, you learn a lot in class everyday and are responsible for a lot of the material. You don't need the textbook to do well but you do have to study. Test are doable.
Her slides are awful and she talks way to fast. She puts way to much material on the slides and there is no way to get all the necessary information because she talks too fast. If I have to hear her voice anymore I may jump of the roof of the lecture hall
Professor Woods will make you think that you understood the material but it is mostly confusing. She will go over one topic for three lectures and test you on it only 5% and not go over something and test you 85% on it. Long story short, she does not know how to make a fair test.
Woods is an awesome professor. Really tried to clarify concepts and if you attend lecture and read it's quite easy to pass. Lectures are a must to attend and if you don't read you can still get a B on tests. The book really clarifies concepts. Overall a great class and a great teacher who really wants her students to pass.
Tests are fair. Review lecture slides and di the hw quizes and youll do good
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. The material is hard and the professor goes way too fast. She really needs to explain things more. All class material will be on slides but will be explained more thoroughly in the book. Study your ass off. Memorize & understand all pathways and how everything works. If you don't study hard, forget it!
This class is tough. You really have to study a lot and I recommend taking easy classes along with this class so that you can really focus on this class. Material is difficult and she goes pretty fast; classes are dense with material. Dont have to go to class but you should bc understanding concepts on your own is not easy. DO NOT CRAM.
Clearly a very smart professor, but gives off a vibe that she hates teaching. If you do as you're told, you should not have a problem getting an easy A in this class. Study hard and there's nothing to worry about. Very enjoyable.
One of my favorite professors at ucsb. If you study and take notes from the book, do the hw, and study off the lecture slides/notes you'll get an A. I learned a lot from this class.
I really don't understand all the negative reviews on Professor Woods! She is so much fun to listen to in lecture and makes a very conscious effort to make material sound interesting, even when she's discussing neuroanatomy. She's clearly very knowledgeable about her subject matter, but not in an unreachable, detached way. Go to lecture & listen!!
This class, although interesting, is TOUGH. Dr. Woods definitely knows her stuff and is a great lecturer, but the nature of the class makes it very difficult. There are many topics to cover in a short amount of time. She also moves VERY fast in lecture, but luckily she posts the slides online. Prepare to study like crazy if you want a decent grade.
Though she definitely has knowledge on the topic, this is a "teach yourself" class. Her lectures consist of her reading off of her powerpoint slides in which are exhausting and long. When it comes to her tests, she provides no study guide or any guidance. The final exam was cumulative with again, no study guide.
Incredibly knowledgeable in her field, which allowed for easy understanding of the material. I did most of the readings and did not pay attention in lecture (was a P/NP for me) and ended up with a B in the class. Her exams are pretty easy if you do the readings. If you review the material the day before the exam, you can get an A.
I really enjoyed her class and lectures were interesting for me. The first midterm was easy, doing the hw and reading the book gets you a high score. But then her second midterm and final were more difficult and less related to the hw so expect to put in more effort towards the latter half of class.
Most amazing psych professor. May seem scary at first, but go to lecture, even though she posts slides online, and pay attention. Know concepts and all parts of the brain. Really cares for students and is tough for a reason. Recycles midterm questions on the final. Overall an amazing professor if you work for it.
This class is definitely tough, and so are her tests, but study hard and you will do well! Know concepts rather than memorizing, and the curve actually ends up benefiting you in the end. She posts her slides, so take notes on what she has to say and the diagrams she draws on the board, often times test question concepts are taken from there!
Incredible professor. Clear, concise, organized, and interesting. She goes quite fast so be prepared and print out lecture slides beforehand. The tests are crazy hard and completely lecture based - prepare to have to know the tiniest, most minute details on them! Only use the textbook if you have trouble understanding her lectures.
Pretty tough class. She goes through lectures very quickly so be sure to study them in advance to have a good understanding. Reading the book was helpful in the beginning but towards the end it became a waste of time. I would advise just focusing on lectures. She helps sometimes but other times is not really willing to help.
Her tests were hard, but as long as you understand the concepts well you should be fine. She goes really fast during lecture, but try to get as much down as you can. Make sure to read the book to clear anything up. The first midterm is okay, the second one gets harder, and the final is ridiculous. Try to save your grade by doing well on midterms.
Woods is infamous for being extremely structured and organized, which she definitely is. However, she's also insightful, helpful, and gives information in a clear format. I appreciated her fast no-nonsense lecturing style, but this just means you really have to pay attention. The class was super challenging, but she made it rewarding!
Great teacher - she is very organized and lecture heavy. Pay attention in class and take notes, ask questions during her accessible office hours (if needed). Tests were hard and you should probably read the book to prepare (she goes fast during lectures, and covers a lot of material). She is extremely approachable, so don't be afraid to ask ?s!
I was honestly intimidated by this class at first because everyone that took it said it was really hard to get an A. Dr. Woods was always available during office hours and she made sure to answer all your questions. She really wants her students to succeed and you can see how much she cares during her office hours. I highly recommend taking her.
very tough grader, i found her quite rude to students and she just read off the powerpoints, she is not a fair grader and her tests are so much harder than the material she covers.
Professor Woods was great. She was very enthusiastic and hands on during lecture, she even made cookies to give us an example of an experiment. It is definitely possible to get an A in this class if you put in the work. Do the readings and you will be fine (the book isnt as boring as you might think). Go to office hours for help on the proposal.
Woods is such a great prof! She is super clear with requirements, what to expect, and how you will be graded. This class is A LOT of work but definitely worth it, if you put the time in and do exactly what she says, you will have no problem getting an A in this class - going to class will be your best friend!
Learn your receptors! Going to class and paying attention will only get you so far. Redraw the diagrams and make sure you have a good system for remembering the different drugs covered. Tests were extremely fair and not meant to trick you at all. Grade is made of a midterm, one paper and the final. Both tests multiple choice.
Dr. Woods made what would have been very boring material interesting. She is enthusiastic, and truly cares what she is talking about. Office hours were super helpful, she helped me come up with my paper design and gave me her full attention. Her tests are tricky, make sure you know all of the vocab, she gives a lot of A+B or A+C options
Attendance is definitely not mandatory. She spends a lot of time over-complicating rather simple concepts but then tests you on much harder concepts. Most people who've taken 10A agree that her lecture style is poor. She is rather friendly and it seems like she cares about her students though, so there's that.
She's super nice and helpful during office hours. Concepts weren't hard but the exams definitely were.
An ok professor. Mostly reads off slides but will answer questions if you have them. Is available for office hours. Tests are pretty difficult. Textbook was boring and awful to read. Final research proposal is graded very very hard. Go to section!
This class is a ridiculous amount of work. She makes you do so much. The paper itself isn't as difficult but there are a lot of assignments here and there. Also an unnecessary midterm on top of all the other assignments we had to do.
Shes pretty average. The textbook was disgustingly long and boring. The lectures are easy to follow but she does talk a lot to get a simple point across (Three lectures on one topic). Tests were pretty difficult. Curves slightly at the end. Make sure you do well on the paper because I bombed the tests but did really well in the paper.
Lectures heavily and simple topics take about a week to get through. She could definitely speed it up and not over complicate things but it wasn't that big of a deal. The tests really weren't that hard at all especially if you read the textbook and memorize the bold terms/ lecture slides. Research paper is graded tough. Midterm is like practice one
Dr. Woods is great! She made 8am lectures worth attending. She really cares about your success and helps you understand research in psychology. The research proposal is extensive and a significant amount of your grade but it makes the class interesting. But sometimes her lecture slides are unclear and do not correlate with what she's talking about
This class is so much work. Seriously the most stressful class Ive taken at UCSB. I feel like she can make it simple but chooses to make it completely difficult with so many assignments. If you do everything you should get an a but be prepared to be really stressed out because this class is unbelievably stressful. I dont recommend.
Dr. Woods is super enthusiastic when she teaches, which makes learning a lot more fun. I wish every professor would have this passion for helping their students understand what is being taught. By far my favorite class that I have taken at UCSB.
This class was very stressful for me, but was very rewarding. Lots of assignments that arent so much difficult but tedious and time consuming and worth a small percent of your grade. The final paper is what counts most but if you keep up with the drafts you should be okay. Big group research project and presentation. Be prepared to work hard.
Woods is very passionate about the class and research methods. The class leads to a long research paper and Woods is very available to help and makes the assignment more understandable. Her tests require a deeper understanding of the material, but is very manageable if you study.
The transition to online learning was made extremely difficult by Professor Woods, as she increased the amount of work we would usually have had in a normal setting. I believe she did not care about the circumstances of the world during this class and offered little flexibility. So many assignments and much time expected for us to dedicate to them
Of all of my professors, Dr. Woods made the switch to online curriculum the most bearable. She communicated throughout the week, and provided detailed suggestions for how you should organize your study time. She was very accommodating if you took the time to reach out.
Amazing class. The most engaging, fun lecture that I never missed the whole quarter. I will be raking any class Professor Woods offers in the future.
Not the greatest but not the worst. She's very sweet and she makes us dance before every class. However, her lectures are very dull, she drags out concepts that are easy. She took one full hour to explain a term that I understood in 5 mins by self-studying. Her tests are fair but watch out for the paper, I got an 75% on the paper hence the B+.
Dr. Woods is an extremely accommodating professor. She sends out weekly schedules that layout what you should be doing each day, always responds to emails, and she even personally emailed everyone who indicated that they were nervous about class being online. I haven't finished the course yet but the grade is heavily based on the research proposal
Great professor! Super understanding during online and very accessible through emails and office hours. I recommend going to office hours even to just sit in, very helpful. Tests are fair and research proposal is a big portion of grade, just do it before finals week and you will be fine.
Class honestly isn't bad, research proposal is tough but the TA's help you a lot throughout. Clear requirements and she is very knowledgeable
This class was a lot of work and super stressful, but just take things one step at a time. You have to work with a group the entire course which is painful. There's a final exam which is super easy and there's a retake for it as well. Major part of grade was the research paper. Prof is caring and understanding if you reach out.
Amazing lecturer. Woods is really great, so smart. Research proposal isn't as scary as it seems because you do a small part of it every week with your TA. Quizzes weren't bad online but idk about in person. Def a decent time commitment but don't be scared, psych majors! Very doable. Sections were annoyingly long tho and sometimes lots of busy work.
Nice lectures, as long as you take notes the online quizzes are very doable. Didnt study for them more than an hour or two and the lowest score I got was an 80. Proposal is difficult but as long as you keep up with weekly assignments you have little to write during the last week. Great at individual feedback, TALK TO HER, TAs can be confusing
Prof. Woods is great! Our big end-of-year project was a research proposal and she did well in preparing us for it through the quarter. Her lectures are easy to follow along, and not super difficult. She does coddle her students a little bit, but otherwise she is a super great professor.
Talks more than she teaches
It is clear that she is passionate about psychology and she wants her students to succeed. Fair exams (open note for my section) and the proposal are the bulk of your grade. Mostly everything else graded on completion/effort. Tends to be a bit of a confusing lecturer and goes on unrelated tangents when answering questions. Start the proposal EARLY!
Overall, the tests are not very difficult and will not drop your grade if you study and understand the material. What really can drop your grade is the research paper, many people do much worse than they thought and it will drop them at least a letter grade.
Finished the class with an 89 and she wouldn't round up. Most of your grade is based on a research paper that is graded by TA's and then only given final grade-no feedback on paper. Lecture heavy on material that isn't very relevant to final 10 page research proposal.
She gives so much extra work worth minimal points that take so much time, like 5% for Eli review which takes hours to properly respond! Also your grade heavily relies on group work (30%) and how many hours you spend detailing each take home home exam. Less than 12 hours? You'll get an F on that exam. More memorization than actual learning.
I appreciate her enthusiasm and her lectures are helpful. I hated all the group projects and Eli review stuff is a pain but since there are so many assignments you can mess up and still do okay. Good professor but the class design is strange.
I've had woods 3 times, can definitely tell she really wants to be a good teacher. Her classes are pretty labor intensive, but she tries her hardest to make everything fair. sometimes there's questions or assignments that were unclear to me though sometimes.
Dr. Woods is a very enthusiastic professor that engages the class during lecture so you won't fall asleep. She repeats important topics many times which is super useful for the final paper. very accessible outside of class and overall not a harsh grader and tests are very reasonable. Very straightforward and to the point with her lectures.
This professor should take advice from RMP. DON'T FORGET TO PROOF READ! Her midterm didn't even make sense because she doesn't know how to write a sentence that is grammatically correct. Her lectures are the same but I expected different on a midterm. It took me so long to even understand what she was trying to ask me. Don't take her.
Dr. Woods is the most lovely. Had her for Psy 109 and Psy 10A and always makes classes so engaging. People who don't leave her a good review are lazy and don't take advantage of all the resources she gives us. Very evident that she is passionate about what she teaches. Clear course outline and grading. She is simply the best!
Dr. woods is a kind professor but her exams & group "quizzes" are impossible. Very ambiguous open-ended questions that are difficult to grasp or understand what she wants you to answer, yet your answer is expected to be very specific & graded by TAs. There's no clear grading criteria &too many worthless assignments. It was a really bad class setup.
Woods is not understanding or helpful. She is very strict and straightforward and does not put in effort to empathize with students. Her lectures are good but the class is unorganized and she is not very accommodating.
I spent a lot of time on the proposal and followed the A examples to a T. However, I still only received an A- on the paper. All the prep and busy work didn't help me do any better on the proposal, as I had changed all my details by the final paper anyways. Lectures were long and she took a long time to explain simple concepts. Hardish tests
I found Dr. Woods engaging and caring. Tests were fair, lots of different things go into the grade so plenty of ways to get points. Research paper is daunting but follow guidelines and start early. Dr. Woods was super helpful one on one and made herself extra available when the TAs struck. Overall loved this class!
her class felt like we had no other classes going on and had all the time in the world for that one class. the things worth 5% took hours to do but the things worth 20% suspiciously took 2 minutes? graded the take home exam super harshly and was overall annoying. no.
She is unaccommodating, and condescending towards students. She isn't inspiring and thinks that she's better than other professors because she makes students do a lot of work.
I had Woods for 10A and I loved her. The class focuses on writing a research proposal, and there is a clear and well organized system that slowly sets you up to writing it. Woods really knows what she is talking about, and is available and ready for questions. She can come off a bit intense, but she is very nice and willing to help.
This class was extremely easy and amazing for getting comfortable with classes at UCSB! You work in groups and get to meet new people and learn how to read research articles and discuss them. Woods is a great professor and really knows what she is talking about.
Prof. Woods is hard and gives a lot of work, but she is very fair and makes sure that if you do the work, attend class, and actively engage with her content, you will be rewarded with a greater understanding of psychology and neuroscience. She is not a prof you want to take if you want an easy A, but will definitely make you a better scientist.
Her class had a lot of busy work which I wasn't a fan of, but it was all easy and as long as you put in the time an A is super achievable. She's also the sweetest, most approachable person ever and will remember/say hi to you quarters after you've taken the class
I took Prof. Woods for both Psy 10A and 120L, and I recommend avoiding taking classes with her. She assigns way too much busy work each week. The only good thing about her class is that exams are take-home. Attendance is mandatory, but her lectures are a complete waste of time in my opinion. She's also very passive aggressive.
Professor Woods was an excellent teacher!! enthusiastic about the content and explains things well. learned so much and have a great understanding of the course material that I will retain for a long time. She really teaches to think critically, and to use and apply knowledge... not just to memorize one day and throw out the next.
Dr. Woods is so helpful & passionate. Very accessible, I recommend going to OH. There's a lot of busy work & attendance is mandatory but it's not hard and it comes together in the end. 2 indiv. online + group in-person midterms but they're easy. Final research paper that you get a lot of guidance on and the rest of the grade is from lab/section.
laughed at me when i went to office hours to ask a question. thats it.
Professor Woods is generally engaging, but the class has a lot of busy work. Exams are fair, and the research paper is manageable with proper guidance. Attendance is mandatory, but Unstuckstudy can be a helpful study tool alongside the textbook.
SO MUCH BUSY WORK and you get no feedback. not a lot of clear criteria about the research proposal so it has been difficult writing it. the individual exams are also very difficult but she is a great professor.
This class is very unorganized and the lectures are all over the place. Most of the content reviewed in lecture wasn't helpful for the final paper that is worth 35% of the grade. The final paper was very confusing and time-consuming.
Woods was a very good professor. The lectures were mandatory but if you paid attention the exams were manageable. Exams were open note, open book as well. The research paper felt daunting in the beginning but there were many assignments along the way to help build it. There is lots of busy work in the beginning that lightens up towards the end.
This class had a lot of busy work that in the end didn't really help with the final assignment. Her lectures were not very easy to follow but you can access them online afterwards. She does use location based iclicker for attendance
She is very nice and I appreciate how helpful she in is office hours.
I really enjoyed this course. I was nervous about the final paper at first, but the assignments throughout the quarter were extremely helpful in piecing my draft together. Also we had group quizzes and open note/book independent quizzes. I would definitely take another course with Professor Woods again!
Dr. Woods is okay as a professor. I found her lectures frustrating because her slides are messy and lecture explanations are all over the place, her hand drawn diagrams are very sloppy and no explanation really felt concrete to me. I did a lot of self study outside of class. She is a nice person though and welcomes questions and conversation.
This class is ALL busy work. Most of my exams/assignments weren't graded going into finals week. She makes the course seem like it will be a breeze but it all creeps up on you. Only did well in this class because I knew most of the content from previous classes. She's super nice in OH though
OMG do not take Dr. Woods. She literally told us she likes to manipulate students and is good at it. I learned absolutely nothing in this class and attendance is mandatory. Reading articles takes forever and the material is super repetitive. Super easy class though for transfer students and a good GPA booster, but really unorganized class though.
