if you want to learn math by yourself this is the professor to take but if you want to learn math to succeed in life best find another professor that knows how to teach and not tell you this is all review right all semester or is in compition with another
I thought he was great! Very nice and willing to help. He doesn't make math more complicated than it needs to be, and explaines things in a way that is easy to understand. Very cool.
His lack of explanations caused me to drop. His statements of 'this should all be review' and 'you should already know all this' are aggravating when MOST of the class doesn't get it. This class started with ~30, had 13 half way thru the semester.
I have him through distant learning so i've never met him. The course overall is easy if you do the homework. He grades pretty easy on tests. I hear all his lecture students complain about him but read the book and do it yourself.
He can not teach for people who do not know it. If your good in math take him if not don't. He thinks everything should be review it is not this crap is hard. Not everyone is on the same level he is on.I did not like him at all.
goes really fast in class -if ur trying to learn then i highly dont recommend -but if u already know the subject pretty well you'll do alright in the class
Calculus is a tough subject, especially for a short spring semester...but he got us thru it. I wouldn't hesitate to take one of his classes again.
Very good teacher. He makes sure everyone understands what he is teaching before going on.
hes a nice guy.. awsome eyes! he makes sure you know whats up, also make sure you do things HIS way.. work wise, cause if not he may mark you down cause you dont do an equation the way he wants it, right answer or not. good teacher though
I had a very easy time in his class. I thought that I was going to do horrible because I hated math, but I walked out with a 4.0. He is helpful if you show iniative. Otherwise you are a waste of his time and drop out anyways. He was a very good teacher for me!
I don't know about the lower level classes, but for calculus this guy does not explain the subject very good. Everything is "review" to him. In calc II, after every section we covered he would state, "this is review from calc I." Why do they call it calc II?
Mr. I is great. Stayed after class to assist students with questions, never looked down on the on you, and he sees me in the hall and inquires how my present math class is coming along. I appreciate that, most instructors just tend to forget about you. can you tell I asked a lot of questions?
Right!? He's annoying as hell and don't know what the hell hes teaching!
AWESOME TEACHER!!!! Funniest on campus!! Limits!! Haha. . .

THIS GUY IS A FRIGGIN IDIOT! After EVERY sentence he would say "Right?" the running joke my class was to stand up and yell NO! ITS NOT RIGHT! I started my class with 35 people.. Myself and 24 other people dropped that class by the time it was all over. He has no idea how to teach or explain things.
I liked him. Math and me do not get along. He made it seem easy. This is my second time taking it. I'm doing 100 times better with Mr. I. He shows step by step how to do the problems while explaining as he goes. I 'd take him again.
Avoid at all costs. Horrible professor. Rushed through the material, did many ch. in one class session. Gave hard tests and just expected you to know the material. Don't take him.
He covered so much material at one time and then expected everyone to understand it.The tests were of course difficult because he didn't spend barely any time at all on the same subject.I had asked him for help and it actually made me more frustrated.I ended up withdrawling and I would not suggest him to not one person.
Good Professor. Made classes enjoyable. I would strongly recommend him to someone taking CALC 2. Tests were dfficult, but he graded them easily.
I would not recommend Mr. I for anyone "relearning" math at any stage. He has POOR classroom control, speakes about "this is all review" right? etc... I don't know one thing more about math than I did before paying for the 5 credits to take this class. I wouldn't recommend him to ANYONE. AVOID AT ALL COSTS, literally.
HE IS A GOOD AND FAIR TEACHER. BY THE WAY, THERE ARE QUITE A FEW STUPID AND UNFAIR RATINGS ON THIS SITE.
Very supportive to students who care about their grades. I loved him.
Prof Iyengar is horrible... I took his distance learning class, and we never got our tests back till after we had taken the next one, and so we didnt know If we could you a cheat sheet or a calculator..and he doesnt like to be bothered with distance learning students( don't dare ask him a question about math)!!
I thought Mr I was great and helpful. It was always the other clowns in class that held everone back, because they did not do their homework and were confused. Not the teachers fault when that happens, and it happened every class. People also were late and missed and it is not the teachers responsibility to hold hands and derect adults into doin
Prof Iyengar, is very manipulative teacher. He would says one thing and does another. His tests are not what he teaches in class. Towards the end he would give us the equation, but not show us how to use it. You cannot use a calculator during the test, but during class he would want us to use it. I would not recommend him.
He was my distant learning teacher. He did a great job on the dvd's, everything was clear and made easy by him.
Nice guy, pretty good teacher. If you practice the problems at home like he says, then you should be fine. Sometime the tests have material you haven't fully learned, but he expects you to use the steps he teaches to work through them which doesn't always work out great. Hard quizes/tests. Helpful if you ask him questions.
i would not recomend this teacher
I've never met such an unprofessional instructor. He would rather chat with people he knew in the class than answer any questions. When he did ?answer? his typical reply is "well you should really already know this" and then he would walk away. I've never gotten below a 4 in a math class until this guy.
I took this distance learning class with poor math skills to begin with, so it's partially my fault I did poorly but he was never there to help.. didn't return my test within a regular time frame (3 months?) and lost my homework.
I love doing math.. But when I went to Iyengar's class I found he was never at his office hours and rarely was he on time to class. Also finding time to lecture during the class period seemed to be difficult for him. He just had us do homework problems..
He is quite good. I liked him. If you are hard working and want to learn then he is there to help.
He is fair at grading because he grades on a curve, BUT if you dont know anything about algebra he is not the teacher you want. He assigns homework BEFORE he even goes over the material. Basically you have to teach yourself, and dont ask questions, he belittles people and makes them seem stupid. Also never on time.
I took this class to prepare me for Algebra just because I had been out of school for a while. Answered all my questions, e-mails, and a phone call. Easy to get along with and his class was clearly outline at the 1st class. He taught me the stpes to get the answers. Want to take him again for my next math class!!!
AVOID, is late to every class and sometimes wont show up, you just are expected to do the work there. Fast pased grader just skims over your work... AVOID
He is very hard to understand. He will jump from section to section. He is also very unorganized. In my prior math classes at MCC I have got 3.0's or higher, in this class I'm barely getting a 2.5 and that is only because he gave the class a break because EVERYONE did bad!!! If you are used to Hughes or Larsen I would not suggest this professor.
He goes over things quickly, and jumps around, but it ends up making more sense in the end. As long as you pay attention and do LOTS of homework you'll do fine on the exams... not a blow-off class or professor, by any means.
He is very hard to understand and seems to give all the credit to those who donot show up but maybe that's what he want so he don't have to be bothered.
Not good, but better than Illian. He doesn't teach but just writes on the board. He like you if you're interested in more than "just trying to pass the class." Incredibly easy grader-I'm passed, but I'm pretty sure I failed all of his exams, but he gives partial credit, so it adds up in the end.
Took basic math on class thinking it would be easy like a refresher class and found that I struggled with not getting in class lecture and had more trouble that I thought but Vasu works @ tutoring center and was a big help. Will take another class by him again but not online again
I took this class online. It is very hard to keep up with the schedule given. You must go to the campus to take the exams and can't use anything but your calculator and provided formula sheets that are of NO help!! he also schedules tests with stupid time frames and doesn't send out a review until the first day of the exam time frame. DONT TAKE IT!
Well if you plan to work really hard to improve your skills this is your guy. If you want to squeak by as easy you can, you will fail. He is a good guy and a good prof, but ONLY to those who try. He also teaches like profs at larger schools. Don't expect many updates on your grade status. overall i am still glad i took him.
Fabulous! I had him for basic math and he was so patient teaching us what we should've learned in grade school. If you put in the time with homework, you get the repition needed to learn any math. He really wants you to succeed and will help you do so. Not active on blackboard but very active with his students. Best math teacher I've ever had!
Took online. Professor was horrible with keeping exam dates as scheduled. There was three weeks in between tests and he was horrible and giving the old tests back before the new tests were to be taken. Was not quick to respond to emails. TAKE WITH SOMEONE ELSE.
I took his stats class and the most difficult class I have ever taken, but he got me through it. Make sure you do ALL the homework and stay on top of it everyday. I struggled through the whole course but asked him questions daily. If you show him you are trying he will do everything he can to help you. I walked away with a 3.0. Awesome guy!
Iyengar is a great teacher and wants to see his students succeed. He's always willing to help during office hours and between his other classes. I highly recommend Iyengar to anyone looking to understand math.
He was an awesome teacher. He gives practice test, that are just like the actual test. As long as you do your homework, and go to math empowerment when you don't understand something you'll do well. :)
I would recommend him if you have the ability to work hard and to keep in track. He is very helpful and very good Professor, but still math is math; so if you're planing to work hard take him, otherwise look for an easy teacher.
Great professor! Very patient and appreciates hard work!
This was a terrible course. The instructor gave NO instruction, notes, or links. You basically had to teach yourself EVERYTHING. He was late getting exams graded, so you had no idea how you were doing in the class. In fact the last two (out of four) exams weren't graded at all before the final. I WOULD NOT recommend this prof ever!
Seems hard, but really cares about you passing as long as you care.. If you work hard, you will be rewarded.
Awesome teacher. He went over every concept as many times as it took for everyone to get it. If you were doing well, he let you know. If you were doing poorly, he told you and offered options on where and when he or others could help you. If you don't put in the effort don't bother, but really if you try he will help you.
Great teacher. Very understanding and rewards you for learning the concepts instead of the right or wrong answers. Great math class to take for adults who haven't had math in years.
Love his teaching style, and he will answer questions in class. Don't ask questions about past lectures, because he'll tell you to go to math empowerment in the Gorman Building. Great teacher, but he doesn't like to babysit those who fall behind.
Iyengar is very smart, however, doesn't explain things well. Instead of providing any notes for the lectures on each section, he would just write down the examples already provided in the book. Instructions on tests/quizzes are very difficult to understand and I would often get marked down because. Tests are very difficult but graded easy.
Vasu is a fantastic person. He does his best to work with the students to get them to pass. He won't pussyfoot around and just hand out your grade. You earn what you get. He doesn't babysit. But if you are putting forth effort (read the chapters, do your homework and generally keep up with studying) you'll be ok. Get your algebra skills in line!
Vasu is a good professor. He is willing to help you, especially if you are willing to help yourself. He is funny and brilliant, but he doesn't keep on top of grading. I have 2 weeks left of class and I haven't received a grade yet. I will be taking Vasu's classes for the next 4 semesters because I like his style of instruction.
Vasu truely cares about his students and heaping them to understand the concepts. He can be found in the math empowerment center helping students between classes. Vasu has a creative approach to instructing, not very structured. I love coming to class each day.
Vasu is great at making sure the entire class understands before moving on. He also like to tell jokes (of which, are actually funny) which makes class more laid back and fun. This was the first math class ive taken where I was happy to show up and enjoyed my time there. Great Professor.
When I took Math with Professor Iyengar, I went from failing math in high school to receiving a 4.0 in this class. Professor Iyengar makes math easy to understand. His class was easygoing, and fun (he likes to joke). He is kind and willing to work with you. I would 10/10 suggest having him as a professor if you struggle with math.
Worst math teacher I have ever had. Very unorganized and lectures are trash. When the whole class fails a test he blames it on the students and says they should do more homework, but he doesnt specifically assign any. He is smart but can not explain things so students can understand. Waits until last minute for grades.
Vasu is a nice guy and will try his best to help you pass. But his lectures kinda suck and its hard to understand. His notes are very unorganized, so you are too. Hes very smart but cant come back down to a intermediate level. If you ask a question he acts like you should know it and barely helps. He waits to give grades to the last second.
This class is not hard, if you have a hard time with math I'd definitely start here. Not much in this class is graded so test are crucial. Very understanding when it comes to being absent but try not to skip. Only issue I had with the class is that he doesn't show you your grades, won't even tell you your grade on a exam if everyone hasn't take it
Ask for help, you won't receive any. Miss a class, and you're screwed. Had to take this class again, took Mr. Barber, best decision ever. Passed with flying colors.
Terrible. Can't understand a single thing he says and he makes you feel dumb for asking questions. Doesn't show you your grades and hardly grades anything besides exams .
Took Foundations of Mathematics II online with him and it was fairly easy. I love math so this course probably came easier to me than others. All but the weekly homework was done through Connect and it's an okay tool. I do wish I had more interaction with the instructor and that the class was a little more structured. A lot of extra time was given.
I have many issues with this professor. we had a student with disabilities who didn't understand the material and the professor got mad and the student left and he locked the door on him. He told us we could report him to the dean but it wouldn't do much since he has seniority here. He also did not get us our grades for our whole semester.
I loved math in high school and was expecting this to be my favorite class, it wasn't, I was confused half the time and he will treat you like you are stupid if you ask questions. if you miss only one day expect to fail his next test, and he speaks in a very boring voice. i honestly couldn't wait for his class to end.
Professor Iyengar was a very dedicated math instructor. However, there were several times where I had trouble with his class. I was an honors math student in high school, but I felt like I was needing math intervention in his class. He never graded that assignment that I had turned in early, and that assignment went in as a 0, costing me a 3.5 GPA
I had him for Differential Equations. He is undisciplined and never ready for class. often can't even complete his own examples without help. slowest grader ever. would sometimes help if asked a question. I could have done better though if I put more time in, finished with a high 3.5gpa. did not like vasu. he does try to make you pass though
Very Very unprofessional i took him for online classes and i cant tell you how many times i emailed this man and never got a response. The one time i did the response i got like weeks later was i was going through old emails. My only line of communication with this man is through email.
I am finishing up online statistics with this instructor and he has proven to be disorganized (changing due dates often, going days without assignments then be assaulted with them) and very difficult to get in touch with even though the class is online. Perhaps he is better in person but for an online class, don't put yourself through this
Having Vasu as my online Statistics teacher was a horrible experience. I feel the worst part about having him as a teacher was that he never did his "job". He rarely responded to emails and when he did they were helpful. There have been times where I have asked him for help and he suggested I ask someone else. He just seemed like he never cared.
One of the worst math teachers I've ever had. Confused & raise your hand? He'll tell you there's no time to go over it & to look at your book. The majority of this class is self taught due to the notes being a brief summary. If you are confused he directs you to the book, nothing else. He acts like he truly doesn't care about your grade. Good luck!
The only way I learn is though Kinesthetic learning, (kinaesthetic learning, or tactile learning is a learning style in which learning takes place by the students carrying out physical activities.) This class is all lectures with little structure. Nice guy, but the way I learn in different from how he teaches.
He covers material so quickly with few examples. Then on the test are problems we never discussed or had practice with. He says he will grade homework but never does. He says he will post something on Blackboard but never does or does so at the last minute. I spent 15+ hours a week between tutoring, learning the same material from online, and HW
He is without a doubt the worst teacher i've had at MCC. Extremely unprepared for everything. Would always come to class late, never have an organized schedule, and relied on previous classes as a guideline. He never told us our grade. During this Coronavirus online switch, he's much worse online as well. Gives us a 24 hour notice to complete test.
I took Calc 1 twice before taking it again with Professor Iyengar. He is undoubtedly the best calculus teacher I have had. Plenty of people complain, but math is a subject that you need to be willing to work on on your own. You cannot expect him to hold your hand through it. His tests and quizzes are often easier than he makes them out to be.
This class is normally meant to be in-person, but it was entirely online this semester, which could lead to some differences in how I rated everything. Not an exceptionally hard class, but I had to teach myself a lot of the material, which made it considerably more stressful. Due dates were also changed very very often throughout the course.
He mentioned that he normally does in person class, but while teaching online he doesn't lecture, simply assigns chapters in the book. He may read a few passages directly from the book during zoom meetings but if you don't understand previous content he will tell you that you're in the wrong class. You should expect to teach yourself in his class.
I am not allowed to say the things that describe the way I feel about Vasu here, but just don't this class. He changes due dates to major assignments, doesn't help you when you need it, belittles people, and takes the whole semester to grade work. He is by far the most difficult person I have ever had to deal with, period. It's not even close.
Assignment due dates were changed frequently throughout the course which jeopardizes planning. The course was very disorganized and some assignments were hidden. He is condescending and makes fun of students for asking questions. This course gave me 3 anxiety attacks because most weeks it was unclear what was due;had to force myself to stop caring
Homework required 10-20 hrs/wk, plus additional written homework and other quizzes. Prof doesn't teach in required attendance lectures. Never got back with answers to questions, also does not have office hours, so you are learning math on your own with him. One good thing- he does allow late homework and gave extensions out regularly.
Very messy. Harsh grader. Rude. Doesnt contribute one bit to teaching the class himself.
This guy was terrible. Straight up.
Prof. Iyengar is a fair professor. He genuinely cares that his students do well and have a good understanding of the material. This class is not easy, but if you apply yourself and do plenty of practice problems you will be fine. Only issue is that he's a slow grader, so don't expect to get your grades back until a few weeks after their due dates.
Not a good teacher, only take this class if you absolutely have to. If you do, take two hours a day to work through the book for the chapter you are on and further your understanding with other resources such as youtube. Do not expect this teacher to give you notes of any kind. He is disorganized, inefficient with zoom calls, and overall not good.
Be prepared to do a lot of meaningless assignments. Coursework was all independent study, and a 15-20 question assignment was due per section of the chapter, on top of a review, and a written assignment. There are no lectures so be prepared to teach yourselves. Would not recommend for the person who needs extra help.
He never responds to emails. Doesn't input written assignments. Barely any notes and relies heavily on Aleks.
Class was difficult but Professor Iyengar did a good job teaching it. Gives lots of homework but a lot of practice is necessary for calculus so you can't really blame him.
Lectures were generally not helpful. I ended up teaching most of the material to myself straight from the textbook. Expectations were unclear or inconsistent, time limits on major assignments often felt inhibiting, & written homework wasn't graded until weeks or months after it was due. He made an already difficult subject needlessly harder.
This professor is the worst I have ever had at Mott. He frequently changes due dates of major assignments, often does not post assignments until two days before they are due, + mass emailed my class warning that he will fail us if we go ahead on assignments, those of which have no due dates + are assigned during the current week. Do not take.
He was by far the worst professor I've had. If you already struggle with math, do not have him as a professor. He would change due dates all the times and the class was so unorganized. Be ready to teach yourself all the material because he is no help.
Vasu rarely had lectors or meaningful material for you to read over. You were expected to learn pretty much everything on your own. Was unhelpful if you had extenuating circumstances, took forever to grade things, didn't explain wrong answers. Schedule was a mess. Unless you are able to teach yourself math efficiently, do not take this class.
This professor has no idea how to run a course. His material does not line up with his pacing chart at all. He cannot answer any of your questions. And he takes forever to grade material.
Refused to return emails, made assumptions about access that not all students had. Poor lectures, not clear and difficult to work with. Would not recommend ever taking.
This class is extremely difficult with lots of missing instruction. Lectures and Assignments do not match up. Class required for stem major though.
I do not understand the negative reviews regarding Prof. Iyengar. I took his hybrid calculus 170 course, and albeit challenging, Vasu was thorough in his lectures and did what he could to make sure that the class would succeed. The class is relied heavily on Webassign, which is not very favorable, but Vasu will answer any questions necessary.
Do not take this course!! This professor is so unorganized and not understanding. The coursework is all over the place, with constant due date changes. He takes forever to respond to emails and forever to grade assignments.
I would not recommend anyone to take this class especially if math isn't your strong suit. Due dates change every day. I'm getting 5-6 notifications per day of due dates changing ultimately leaving me with missing work. I'm a straight A student with 66 credits and this is by far the most unorganized course I've taken.
The amount of frustration this class causes is not worth it. Extreme amount of busy work, your assignments might have up to 40+ parts later on in the semester, with multiple assignments due per week. Due dates change all the time with no notice. ALEKS is a hard system to learn from and you pretty much have to teach yourself the class. DO NOT TAKE!!
Without a doubt the worst professor I've had at Mott. Since attendance isn't mandatory there's in all honesty no use in going. His lectures are absolutely terrible and you will have to teach the material to yourself. He assigns multiple assignments a week and CONSTANTLY changes their due dates. Written homework is graded a month after assigned.
Not sure why no one really likes this professor! He helped me come back from failing. I had a 40% in the class and he made sure I understood, reached out to me FIRST, and I ended up with an 83%. He is a great person and I really thinks he just wants to see you succeed. Thank you Professor, you have been one of the best at Mott
This professor doesn't actually teach. He makes you watch monotone pre-recorded videos from other people to "teach" you then assigns 60 problems a week but only gives you 2 days to do it, if he doesn't change the due date. I feel very forgotten and on my own in this class.
This class was an absolute nightmare. There are 6 assignments every week. Add 1 hour of notes for every sections plus 1.5 hours to complete every section. That's 15 hours worth of homework every week. The best part is that the homework category is only 10%. His exam category is 70% and they are the hardest math exams I've ever taken.
