Mr. Chiek knows how to teach and explain math. He's a good teacher and I wish I had more of his classes.
He made math easy and fun by having "math parties" or relating things to music or life. Generally he was a great guy and easy to get a hold of. He was lenient when it came to lateness, but I was sure the students talked to him about it. He's usually there for his students in any way possible so he is a great teacher to take.
Iam currntly enrolled in his winter session class and its alot of work. But during lecure he makes sure you understand everything. He loves questions. And overall is a good teaher. Would recommend!
mr chiek is a funny guy and hes a good teacher overall. sometimes he moves really fast and gets frustrated when you are lost but he tries to make sure everyone understands. its tons of homework but he reviews before every exam. pop quizzes if you are noisy in class. but overall it was a fun class. i would take him again
Mr chiek is waaay laid back BUT you get homework everyday, its not too bad though. He lets you know when there will be quizzes, very easy. If you take good notes and study well you will def get an A. He makes math really fun "math parties" are cool. I HATE math but i engoyed his class. highly recommend!
He is an incredible teacher. I think he is the only one who can teach math and make it funny at the same time. If I will have to take this class again I will absolutely choose him. I recommend to students to take Math 35 with him. You Will ENJOY it!!!!
Mr. Chiek is an amazing teacher he makes math fun and understandable. He is extremely helpful, and is willing to help his students with any questions. He does give out tons of homework but it's all worth it. I highly recommend him to any student I would definitely choose him again. I ended up loving his class and I hate math.
Professor Chiek is an amazing teacher. I've had him for Math 35, 36 and now Math 10. he keeps going to make sure that you get what he's teaching and sometimes he introduces concepts ahead of time so that when it comes time to learn them, it is like review. I definitely recommend him!
TAKE THIS CLASS!!! I promise you will enjoy it hes a huga laker fan which is a plus = ] he is very helpful and makes algebra so fun and easy... i actually looked for to going to his class... very fun teacher!!!
Mr. Chiek is a good teacher. He expects you to pay attention and he is very willing to help you if you are willing to try, but he doesn't waist his time on people that don't care. Overall good teacher and fairly easy.
decent
Hes a funny dude which makes class cool to go to. He cant spell for sh*t which makes class even more amusing. Tests are ridiculously hard and theres alot of homework. Hes super helpful though and hes in his office to help. He a young guy and if your cool to him hell be cool back. Take him hes fun
he always kept things simple n easy to understand, but u need to know the basic math stuff first, though cuz he taught fast. homework's gonna help u apply the stuff he taught, n make sure to go over the in-class notes for every test. easy if u show ur hard work! highly recommended.
Very easy to follow and if you don't understand he is ready to help you any time. He gives many quizzes and exams, but everything from his review sheet and homework. Also very organize, so easy to follow.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. his class is fun and no surprise, lotsa homeworks. tests are pretty much everything that he covered in class, and also homework problems. he's super HOT. lol.
the best math teacher i have ever had. hes funny and makes you pay attention. lots of homework but its not hard. take his class
He is horrible at teaching!!! Don't take him.
How does this guy get such a hi rating? of the several math teachers i have had, he is near the worst. If you question him, he gets imature, he is easy to get angry and if you miss work he drops you instead of helping you, there is a difference between "explaining" and "teaching"
I decided to get Mr.C as a teacher because it said great comments of rate my professor. I ended up taking him and he is confusing, anal, and mean. I would't suggest taking him.
Hes ok. I don't think he is that helpful. When I understand him he's clear but at times he goes to fast. His test are hard.
Mr.Chiek is not very helpful. When I ask him questions, he looks at me like Im crazy
He is the worst instructor I have ever encountered. He was extremely rude, unwilling to help, and if you dared to ask a question he singled you out and tried to make you sound like a moron. He should not be teaching for the sake of math. He understands math but doesn't know how to teach.
Don't take this teacher you will regret it!!! He grades harder than any teacher and tries to act nice to cover up the fact that he's messing with your GPA. I regret ever taking him as a teacher. BIG MISTAKE.
He seems to favor females. He makes it tedious for the guys to get a decent grade. Everyone pretty much gets below a C
Chiek is a good teacher but is demanding. I go to class twice a week and you can expect to cover two sections of a chapter per visit and to have 4 hw assignments a week. Quizes once a week. HW is like 10 to 15% of grade. He will help those who look for help and overall good teacher
Let me tell you this right away, if you are looking for an easy A, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. If you truly want to excel and move on in math, he holds you to a high standard, which will prepare you for your next math course and he is the man! It's alot of work, he moves fast and sometimes I want to cry. I know he does it because YOU ARE IN COLLEGE!
This teacher is the hardest teacher I have ever run into. He makes the class as hard as possible and never gives his students the benefit of the doubt. He makes me want to quit, and Im never the type to feel this way. If you want to lose hope in your life take him. He is good at making you miserable.
This teacher grades unfairly. He will grade individuals papers differently. He has no standards. He will mark someone off three points on a problem, while he marks another with the same EXACT PROBLEM one. How do I know? Compare my test with others who know less than me but for some reason they do better =] He has favorites very annoying man!
How do I have below at 40 percent in this class? Want to know why? BECAUSE MR.C is crazy. Don't take him he'll fail you.
omg this teacher is seriously the easiest teacher. he's really funny. you have to be stupid not to pass. this is an easy A. do the work and you will pass. he explains everything thoughly. he's the best teacher at rcc. he's pretty cute too :)
LISTEN!!!People who act like little babies' need to grow up because Mr. c is a good teacher. Yes! He's had but come on it's college! If your a person who like to get the easy way out..don't take his class..be a loser and choose a east teacher..
This professor is awesome. I am a math major, and he is so concerned with the students who really want to learn. Makes sure in every class that everything is clear, and will take the time to clarify anything that needs extra help. By far one of the best professor's for Math!!!
Mr. Chiek was really helpful and easy to approach in person and via email. But beware, he is a hard grader on tests and quizzes. Make sure that you enjoy drawing and constructions, because you will be doing alot of them. Homework wasn't too bad, but the proofs on the tests... let's just say I dropped the class because of them.
I had to drop this class towards the end of this semester because this guy had unrealistic expectations. He is annoying and doesn't know how to spell!!! Adding him was a mistake. Now I have to take this class all over again!
This teacher is horrible. I have no idea what he is trying to teach because he skips a bunch of steps. He acts if you know the subject already.
Unfortunately he showed preferential treatment to certain students over others and this affects his grading. The subject matter isn't hard but he makes it hard as possible!! your grade depends on various things and in my opinion he makes it vary personal. Not a fair grader meaning that he grades everyones papers according to the individual.
This teacher is so-so. He seems like a laid back guy in person but I personally don't like his teaching style =] I think he skips alot of info and is confusing.
HARD teacher, grades differently on each student, if you seem dumb he's easier on the grading, if you look smart no mercy. the lecture seems easy but doesn't cover the hard stuff you'll encouter in homework and test. Test are VERY difficult. He is a good teacher, but not recommended unless you love math. If you try HARD you'll pass with C X_x
He is very nice and a great person, but it is hard to follow what he is doing. He skips over steps and assumes you know what he is doing. GREAT GUY, but don't like his teaching method.
if you don't do literally 10% of the hw he will drop you from the class. I didn't care too much for his personality the atmosphere in the class was uncomfortable, he comes at students at an angle.
in my opinion he is one of the greatest teachers i had ever had. if you like to learn quickly and really learn then this is the class for you. He doesnt leave anybody out, after teaching 1 thing he gives an example and walks around the class to make sure everyone understands. he also has alot of easy short cuts for EVERYTHING! that helps alot.:)
I dropped the winter course after the first exam. You must have geometry fresh in you....its hard and incopehensible mostly because this class is a crash course. Take--if you are fresh on your geometry skills--dont take if you dont.
this teacher is the right teacher for geometry i took him in fall 2008 i am telling you he is on of the best math teachers i had ever took he taught me a lot of thng and made me do math in confidence
Really nice guy. He tells the lamest jokes but it is cute. His teaching methods I had a hard time following. If I hadn't know Geometry as well as I do I never would have been able to pass. Nice Guy but I DO NOT SUGGEST this class for an student who does not already have a clear understanding of math! =D
Fall 08 GREAT TEACHER! if you truly want to understand math and get the concepts for advancing in math, TAKE HIM!He holds you to a high standard and it's hell at the time, but when you get to the next level you will be grateful for his high standards.Prepares you for advanced courses and notices if you do/don't put out the effort to EARN your grade
had no prior knowledge of geometry at all and earned an A. I studied my butt off! In trig now and am greatful that I can keep up because of the discipline he instilled. will not hand you your grade, you must EARN it. Wants to see you do well because you actually LEARNED. if you want to learn and plan on advancing he is an excellent teacher.
Good professor. Definetly not the easiest but he makes you learn your stuff. Very fast paced and you must be involved in the class to get the grade. Pretty much two sections of homework per class which must be done or youll fall behind.
He is very nice and helpful. Its a lot of work but well worth it. Keep all your notes and youll see how they will help for math 11. I got an A but I well deserved it. I took it with my friend who hates math and she got a B.His class helped me in math 11.
This teacher is so annoying. He is not clear and rushes through things. His expectation are high, but his teaching is awful!!! This could lead one to trouble if they don't know their stuff.
Pre-Calculus got a B+.Teacher is fast paced but very helpful. Just like any math you need to attend class and do your hw. I dont understand how ppl expect to pass w/o doing hw and not coming to class. Pre-Cal is a bit complex and Chiek breaks it down easy but still teaches what you need to know. Knows his stuff. If in doubt, sign up for Math Lab.
He knows what he's doing, and he expects the students to also know the material well. His tests are not easy, but he is always there to help you out during office hours. He explains stuff very fast, thats why you gotta prepare before class and review it after class. Not an easy professor, but I learned a lot. he's cool and pretty funny too!
He is fast paced and expects a lot of work from you, but he teaches so well you should have no problem. He is very interactive with the class and will walk around making sure everyone gets how to do the work properly. He'll go over anything you don't understand. He's funny too, always talking about math parties, haha.
I don't know why so many people complain and do terrible in his class. Sure, there's a lot of work, but he explains EVERYTHING, answers any questions, and will even allow the students to work in groups during quizzes. I've had teachers in middle school that were harder and stricter.
He is a teacher that I find hilarious and helpful Yes, his class can be hard but by studying and paying attention in, you will do well. I think the reason many people receive bad grades in his class is simply because they do not input any effort at all into the subject and the teacher should not be the one to blame.

I wish never to have him again as my teacher. I found his rate of speed not conducive to comprehending the math problems and the subject matter. I took the same class again with another instructor and did much much better.
Very enthusiastic and nice. He also tells lots of math jokes. Lots of home work and hard test, but he will be loose about deadlines if he sees that everyone is having trouble. He is always there to help and i mean ALWAYS. You will need all the help he can give. i really enjoyed the class.
He likes when you do shortcuts and not show all your work. He kinda skims over the lesson. When he does teach you, he skips steps which can be confusing. I recommend him to people who know a lot about math or else the shortcuts and the skimming will be confusing,I took over the summer though so maybe that is why there was a bunch of skimming, idk.
Great Teacher. Great with students. Great guy. He is funny. A little fast but i had no trouble keeping up. I want everyone to take a math class with hime. He is awesome. Im glad i had him for math.
An amazing teacher! I had him from Geometry all the way to Trignometry. He makes sure that every student gets their questions answer prior to the lesson. And also goes over past material that we might have forgotten. He's a bit strict when it comes to hws. But if you do all the hw and study for the test and do well you will pass the class in ease.
Mr. Chiek can move quickly sometimes, but if you study his study guides, pay attention in class and do your homework it's pretty simple to get a good grade in his class. Plus he tries to help you as often as possible! I would take him again in a heartbeat.
If you have trouble with math DO NOT take this professor. He has good teaching techniques but he often explains things until one student understands the material and then moves on. Lots of HW is assigned and a quiz once a week. I attended SI meetings regularly and still did not pass. BEWARE.
Really hard. As long as you study and seek tutoring, you will pass the class. Don't expect an easy A, I love math, and I struggled for a B. But he makes sure you are strong in your math skills.
He is a hard proffesor and makes you do things the hard way, but will also show you usefull tricks to help you understand the matirial. Overall a good professor. If you want somone who will really help you prepare for prcal take him
If you want to learn math, take him. However, if you care about your grade, stay away from him. his tests are ridiculously hard. grading is not fair because it's multiple choice mostly. you have to do all of your homework which is excellent. very helpful teacher, but doesn't curve.
He expects you to take your own learning into control, ask questions and study as well as do your hardest to be able to do math in your head. But he is helpful and won' move on in class until everyone is clear about what is going on. Very, very rarely does he extend deadlines & if you dont do your work or show up he will drop you. He teaches well.
One of the worst teachers in RCC, I really don't know why he is teaching. . . His lectures are for the student that already took Trig in HS, because if your new to this, he wont take the time to explain it. . . through the semester I felt like I was in a foreign language class, because he didn't teach anything!!!!
Tests are EXTREMELY HARD but if you study the concepts you should do fine. Homework is a big part of your grade so it helps you if you don't do well on the tests. He moves through material quickly but will not move on to next section until everyone is ready for it.
He was the best teacher out the three teachers teaching this class at the same time, all my classmate wish he only taught this class with out dr cramm and dr mendoza.
hes an okay teacher, goes too fast, doesn't wait for you to write everything down. The reviews are NOTHING like the exams. Hw is NOTHING like exams. Word problems on tests!!! if you are awesome at math take his class, if you aren't then STAY AWAY from this teacher! he teaches us basics then expects us to do all this crazy advanced trig. stay away
This teacher has a great personality. But his teaching methods are meant for those who are good at math. He expects for you to already know the basics. Overall, the class was difficult and was not able to kept up. Warning!!! if you struggle with math, Do NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!!
Great Teacher. fair and easy to understand. will keep going over it tll you get it.take him if you not good at math do the homework and quizzes. go to lab to study for test and you will pass
Very hard teacher. Expects too much from students. Tests are nothing like HW and what is shown in the book and are much harder than either, a fact that even he himself says. Expects students to very welled versed in math prior to coming into the class, and helps little. Not recommended at all.
Great teacher. explain well, fair. yeah you do need to do your home work and study if you want to pass!
yes he's a hard teacher but very fair and will help you until you understand the lesson. I have had this teacher many times over many years going back to when he was teaching at my old high school. trust me i have had many proffers and none that cared as much for his students success as him. He wants you to succeed and better yourselves. and to th
Very good teacher, explains very well. I highly recommend him.Be responsible, study hard, do your homework, do your online work and you can get easily an "A", like I did. I took Mat-11 with him!
Writes too much pointless stuff on the board. The tests are way to hard so he should curve the grading scale but chooses not to!
Mr. Chiek is a Outstanding Instructor and unlike some of the other people that have said bad stuff about him he is nothing short of great! Yes he does go fast and assumes that you already have the basic math skills down but it's only frustrating to those who don't get it. If you don't get it then stay after school, he will help you! I recommend him
I took professor Chiek after not having a math class for a few years, he dose an excellent job refreshing the fundamentals. Do the homework and ask questions and you will pass, because he cares.
Mr. Chiek was awesome! I have always hated and failed math. It took me 10 years to even attempt it again. When I left this class I was excited about math
straight and to the point plan to take him for cal series
Do NOT take. Moves WAY too fast and assumes you understand the material the first time. Both are facts that he himself has stated at the beginning of class. Makes the class intimidating from the get go by stating that if even if you took the prerequisite math classes prior to Math-5, chances are you still may not understand it.
Do not take Chiek. Worst teacher ever. He doesn't cover the material well. He made us buy the book and then used his own methods instead of the books making it difficult to follow the material. Never available to help if you have questions and isn't clear when he does try to help. Went from an F to an A with a different teacher. Avoid at all costs!
help me a lot with math went around room to help out student. overall, great teacher.
The thing about Chiek is that he is straightforward in the beginning & that can be intimidating. He makes you work for your grade, but is fair about it. He shows you his methods because they tend to be simpler than the textbook's. His class really helped me regain confidence in my otherwise nonexistend math skills.
Chiek is very straightforward as someone mentioned. Took him for summer, requires online code (Webassign) and wasn't easy. You really have to work for a high grade. Gives 5 tests and assigns homework daily; lectures and answers questions if you ask during class; available after class too. You can pass his class if you do your work and ask for help.
Don't take his class. He's a cool guy & his lectures can be entertaining, but he likes to trick you on the test. He puts problems that you've never seen or practiced, or changes the aspect of the question in a way that you haven't studied. The homework was too easy compared to the tests. If I took another professor, I would have had a better grade
his lecture is clear, and he is very helpful. his test can be tricky sometimes, and you really need to work hard for an A.
Professor Chiek is a great teacher, but is very demanding. You really have to be dedicated is you wish to do well. His lectures are very helpful, assigns homework that is due everyday, and quizzes everyday as well. Took this course during summer so it had to be this way. His tests are very challenging, make sure you study examples in book
I saw that some people said he is hard but fair, which is not the case. He's hard and unfair. He's rude and he always made me feel dumb. I worked really hard in this class and he gave me false hope that I would pass. There is ton work. Oh and if you miss class, and he notices, he'll ask where you were. And not in a caring way.
Trigonometry is generally very easy for me. I took it before and aced it. Students in his class that has taken it for the first time always went to me for help though, giving an idea of his inability to elaborate efficiently. I missed one class, not even in the first weeks, and he dropped me! I aced all of the quizzes too. It's not high school!
good over all,but made mistakes sometimes
HW is different from what he teaches, quizzes are completely different from tests. Tests are ridiculous and have new material never before seen. avoid if possible
This Man WILL NOT TEACH. He literally gives youtube channel websites and wants students to go home and learn from the YOUTUBE Videos. In class, we do hw. Class is almost like a tutoring center and the "professor" for this class is our daily assigned Youtube Videos. This man needs to pay youtube seriously. YOUTUBE should be a supplementary ONLY!!
I don't even blame this teacher. I blame RCC for hiring a teacher like this. He does not teach. Every day you have to go watch assigned Youtube Videos and come to class and do homework. If you have already taken calculus before it should be fine. But for the first timers, you should avoid this class. This teacher is lazy and disdainful.
i thought i was the only who was having troubles with his way of teaching (youtube videos) but it seems like everyone is having problems too. Up to this class I have taken 4 maths classes in which i have gotten straight A's in all of them. In this class I'm struggling to get a C.
BEWARE of this professor!
A lot of tricky questions! 1% lecture, 99% youtube videos. I've always gotten A's in math. My overall score is B but I'll probably end with a C.
Tests are not from the reviews or from homework. They are always few steps ahead of what we usually do in class. This teacher is very irresponsible. Does not teach, throws test questions that students have never seen before, no extra credits. And this is accelerated class.
Usually classes become hard because the materials are difficult. This class, materials weren't so difficult but the teacher makes everything so difficult. Tests are free response but you NEVER get any partial credits if your answer is wrong, which makes it worse than a multiple choice questions. You will get lectures from assigned youtube.
This teacher is just irresponsible. Even though you may understand the materials, he makes tests so difficult. If he wants to throw those difficult problems on tests, he needs to go over similar questions in class and teach students how to solve them. By not doing so, those his tests are just to trick and fail students.
Knowing concepts in this class will not get you an A in this class. During class time or homework it's always about knowing concepts but only on tests it's always few steps further which students have never been exposed to. Worst of all he didn't even lecture for winter classes used YouTube.
Oh wow it looks like I wasn't the only one... His tests are really hard. There are only 10 problems and if you miss one problem it will lower your grade a lot. And worst of all his questions are very tricky not from textbooks or reviews. I had a hard time because we never went over our homework or reviews. Also we had to watch Youtube.
tons of homework, quiz everyday, challenging tests. You can learn a lot from him. You really need work very hard for A. Even though I got A , this is the most painful class I have ever learnt.
Loved the comment "clearly" on his examples when it was obvious that it was not clear to the class at all, the only people that had a chance were the ones who have repeated this course. Come on! He made us watch youtube videos to learn the concepts because he was too lazy to lecture so unprofessional I want my money back!!
I don't know why he teaches at RCC. He looks down on RCC students and he is extremely dismissive. I don't think he would treat students like this at a 4yr University.
Don't take accelerated course with this teacher. He gave Extra credits during fall or spring but nothing really that helped our grades for accelerated calculus course. Also it was 99 percent Youtube. He wasn't so nice or helpful when students asked questions. I regret for not waiting for spring calc class.
Tests were difficult. Need to understand concept to understand problems. Learn so much from his lectures. Great teacher.
He is strict and hard, but he teaches well... he definitely makes you learn.
Very dismissive, not so helpful. He will intimidate you.
If you are not those students who are willing to kiss this teacher's feet every time, this is not a class for you. He has no respect for RCC students.
You will learn a lot from this class because tests are so difficult. They are not from his reviews or from hw. Some questions are intended to trick students. Take this teacher if you want to learn from your mistakes on tests and willing to receive bad grades.
Class was not easy but it was definitely worth taking it with him. He makes the material more approachable and he himself is approachable. Lots of HW and not very easy tests but if you work at it and get help you'll do well. Also very good looking ;)
Great professor. Although this course is very demanding and his tests are difficult, he will most definitely prepare you for the rest of the calculus series. I'm currently in CALC II and I'm breezing through it thanks to Chiek.
Has you watch prelecture videos on youtube so you'll know the basic concepts. Tons of homework, but its easy compared to his exams, which he intentionally makes as difficult as possible to really challenge students. If you are going up to MAT 1C, 2 and 3, he might be the guy to start with. If not, find someone else if you want a good grade
Chiek is the worst professor at Rcc. I took math 1b once before taking his class and its 5 times harder than the last class I took. His tests are like university level that only the smartest students in the class can solve about 80%. Its just ridiculous for summer course. Doesn't keep his words about letting us use trig equation sheet for 2nd test.
Thought I would leave a good comment for you Mr. Chiek. His class is not the easiest class I have ever taken, but he teaches well. I would not suggest taking it in the winter or summer, but Mr. Chiek is a good teacher who cares about his students (who care about math).
Prof. Chiek will first come across intimidating but through the semester he actually comes across a down-to-earth guy. He has a sense of humor and puts it in every lecture. I didn't do a lot of the homework and I passed with a B in both classes, but I would've gotten an A if I DID the homework. He's willing to listen and helps out a lot. Thumbs up.
Chiek is a great professor, but the work can be challenging at times. Definitely don't take this class if you aren't prepared to work hard.
The guy is cool but he don't know how to teach, he expect you to know everything before you take his class. He expect you to know background of the stuff very well. He is always rushing through the course does not matter you understand or no. Too much work in short period of time. Basically you have to work really hard if you wanna pass class.
Expect to hear the word clearly a lot, just as a subconscious way of him letting you know that if its not clear then you're in the wrong class. Is quite hilarious, we started using it as a postulate for proofs on our homework. If you don't have a strong grasp on trig, you will by the end of the class, otherwise you'll simply fail.
Obviously Mr. Chiek knows higher math for himself, but seems to struggle to pass on the methodology and technique to students, which suppose to be the primary goal of his class. His teaching techniques are based on assumptions and skipping steps (which is critical in math) that's of little benefit to most students in his class.
He is a great teacher who establishes clear objectives for each lesson and works to meet those specific objectives during each class. He is an angel fallen from heaven to help us succeed in Mathematics. If you want an easy teacher and an A take him!
worst professor
Don't skip class! There is so much to cover and in so little time. Always do homework or you will be lost!
He seemed really cool at first but as the semester went on he got meaner. He was very confusing in his explanations and if you didn't understand he would make you look/feel stupid. He constantly got frustrated (even turned red) when people asked for help and didn't understand. His makeup exams were set up for you to fail them. AVOID THIS TEACHER!!!
HE IS NEVER AN OPTION REMEMBER THIS WORDSRATHER BE LATE TAKING MATH THAN TAKING CHIEK He expects you to know everything and NEVER finishes his examples. When you try to ask or clear a doubt he makes you feel the dumbest person in this planet. would never recommend it to anybody REMEMBERHE IS NEVER AN OPTION
Not an easy class, but if you do the homework and practice you'll do well. He is always willing to help you if you ask for it.
too many unstandable homework. His voice is noise.
I do believe he is good at math; however, he is not good at teaching. Not only he has a huge number of homework and most of them are even( which mean no answer) . but he always wants you to follow him, but we cannot get what he want us to say. On his lecture, we just noting every time.
I have never had a math teacher that makes me feel stupider. He treats people who are struggling like they are idiots. He has zero communication via email, and never has the time to talk to students after class. If I didn't love math and engineering so much I would want to switch majors, he took all the fun out of learning math which is really sad.
Here's an example of what you'll be dealing with. You take the first test, maybe you get a bad grade. You talk to him alone and he tells you "I just don't see any potential for you here, maybe don't continue in the class." No offer to help even. That's the kind of person you're dealing with, a professor who quits on you the first chance he gets.
I took MAT1A, 1B and 1C with him. He always gives his students a lot of homework, and if you do all the homework, read the book and practice the examples in the book, you will not have to worry so much about the test. Do not quit even if he tells you to or you want to. Focus on the book when you get confused! It's not too hard.
He obviously knows math, yet he does not explain it well enough for everyone to understand. I thought I was strong at math, but with Chiek it was not possible. He goes too fast, and he assumes everyone knows what he is doing.
He vaguely/quickly explains a lesson and if you do not understand it he insults your skills. Have been an A student my entire life until his class. Exams are so difficult and not even similar to anything he lectures on. I put hours into studying, could solve ANY problem in the textbook, and still got 78 on exams (which he said was VERY GOOD)
Chiek is degrading and does not teach what he tests on. He lectures for a few minutes, does maybe one simple example, then leaves you and your group to blindly teach yourselves. He regularly makes mistakes in the few examples he does and instead of explaining what he did wrong, just erases it and acts like it didn't happen. AWFUL PROFESSOR.
Best math teacher at the school but you have to work for your grade, do all the homework and get decent scores on the tests and you'll pass
Professor Chiek is so cute. He is a great professor but very difficult.
Make sure you do your homework as it counts towards your grade. The test are not easy but are doable if you study and know the material. Many of the students who struggled or had a low grade was due to the lack of completing their homework. Be ready for group work and attempt/act to get along with your group.
Hes a very hard grader. He gives a lot of homework, so be ready to work on it for like 8 hours. hes not very understanding either, I got the flu and asked for one extra day to do the homework, he said no.
doesn't help you succeed.
Professor Chiek is a very easy and nice teacher. He gives out little homework, and his test are pretty easy. His class was basically an easy A. Everyone in the class had a B average. If you want an Easy A teacher, then take Chiek. Im happy I took him because my GPA really needed it
Going into his class you better have spent your entire summer/semester before reviewing everything about math;he expects that you know everything about math! He rarely finishes his examples. if you dont get it & you ask him to clarify he makes you feel stupid in front of everyone! Oh and if he doesnt know you he wont talk to you or call on you
You're going to have to work for an A. Consistent effort will be rewarded. He has a good sense of humor and a better sense of when students are really putting in the effort. Approachable and honest. You will learn or else!
Honestly one of the best professors I have taken. He knows his stuff and he does things you've never seen. You for sure have to study the material and do all the homework if you want to pass his class. Ask questions any time you can and you will come out of this class understanding math on a whole different level
Prof. Chiek is like a mama bird that pushes her babies out of the nest. If you're not quite ready to fly, you die. But if you have the discipline to flap your wings and flap them hard, you will be a better mathematician for it.
Class was overall enjoyable and he taught the material well. Lots of exams and homework, but what do you expect with a college class. Overall, he teaches well and you can learn a lot from his class if you put in the time and effort. If you don't, then you only have yourself to blame.
I took both MAT-1B and MAT-1C with Prof. Chiek. Hes a fantastic professor who really cares about explaining material and helping you learn. I highly recommend him to anyone who wants to better their understanding of math.
I seriously thought I was on a roll with math and frankly enjoyed it up until this point, Chiek had me rethink my career path just because his ability to teach us from a clean slate is terrible. The point of a class is to learn new concepts and learn from square one, Chiek has a habit of assuming we know calc from the back of our minds.
Took 1B Sp20 for UCR transfer credit. Class was organized but not well paced. Chiek has an aggressive teaching style. He is a good lecturer, but gives harsh feedback & belittles students with questions in class. Didn't want to ask q's. Very harsh exam grader (gatekeeper, no curve, very little partial credit). OK with a C average for his classes.
Review ALL OF 1A BEFORE taking, you need FRESH knowledge of 1A. He gave lots HW but we went over some in class. He tested MOSTLY on the hard stuff. He makes fun of these reviews instead of learning from them. Was a mistake not listening to negative reviews bc most are accurate! Take him if you want a challenge, but difficult does NOT mean better!
If you seek knowledge, look no further. If you seek an easy grade, look elsewhere. Professor Chiek is the best Math professor I have ever had. Indeed he is tough, but he teaches! His instructions were clear and well organized. I took booth 1B & 1C with him, and those classes were challenges that made life worth living. I survived and thrived.
He gives out a test for each chapter. He only puts things on the test that you have never seen before. If you are struggling with a certain topic study up on it because chances are it's on the test.
If you want an easy A, this is not the class for you. Chiek will push you until you want to give up; whether you decide to persevere & strengthen your weaknesses or give up is your choice. Make doing homework, going to the MLC, and going to his office hours a habit and encourage other classmates to join you. It's hard work but not impossible.
Professor Chiek was a very cool teacher ill give him that but if you aren't great with math he will humble you very quickly this teacher isn't the best teacher to pick for an easy grade, can be funny sometimes but overall not as much, Take the course if you want a challenge and avoid it if you want to be stressed
Avoid this teacher. Worst math teacher in existence, He loves to degrade people and even his own students its like he wants you to think you don't have a chance, of course you can try but I wouldn't bother with this teacher. Also he try to be funny. P.s he is not.
Chiek is a good professor. Even though I did get a D in the class, it was primarly my fault since I don't study for test but hey, it is what it is. He does answer questions about the homework and will try to help you as much as possible. If you are going to take the class, just expect to be dissapointed since he will be honest to you or the class.
Even though I failed the course, he is still a great professor. You will be pushed to your limits and must truly know and understand the material to pass. In my course, less than half of the class even stuck it through to the end. There's lots of homework, but you MUST do it to practice the material. Go to the MLC and work with others. It will help
Firstly, the class itself is not super difficult, but the professor wants to make it that way, at least for me. He disrespects me, and some other students which is ridiculous and the way he speaks is to belittle you while stuttering and acting like he has some sort of illness. Been at RCC for years and have never met such a horrible professor...
Pros: available & helpful Cons: Exams are traps; he veers from the Hw. The Hw is supposed to prepare you for it. Gatekeeper with grades. To be successful do the homework BEFORE his lecture to avoid him berating you in front of everyone. Teaching style: he relies heavy on class participation; so be ready to know his lecture before he teaches it.
Toughest professor ever meet.
100% Recommend this Class if Learning and Compreshension is your Priority and not just the final grade. Attend Lecture, Do the HW, Use the online resources, and Study. Just keep reviewing the material (for this class and for the Prereqs). Work hard and you will see growth. You will come out of the class a better mathematician and Student.
Forget all the bad things a lot of the negative ratings say: Professor Cheek is the best professor you can take for Calculus; no debate. Calculus was not meant to be easy and you have to put in a lot of work for his class especially, but your math skills will become much better once you take him. Just make sure to take him the moment you finish 1A.
This professor is impossible. I took this class online and his lectures are a joke. He blows through the lesson and just keeps saying "I hope that makes sense" when it makes zero sense at all. He does not go into depth in any way and explains nothing, teaches very basic but then expects us to be able to do the most complex problems on our own.
Chiek's MAT1B is a challenging but rewarding course. While the workload is heavy, engaging with the material through homework, office hours, and the MLC can really solidify your understanding. unstuck ai was a lifesaver for me - the practice questions and explanations complemented the course content well.
He is passionate for math. An A is possible if u prioritize this class over others. A lot of HW. Tests are easy. Thinks his explanations are enough/doesn't like SHOWING how to solve a problem. Lectures are rushed. He is less forgiving for calc3 students because "u should know all this already" so u better be a master of calculus if you choose him
He didn't go over many examples in class, and assigned a ton of homework each week, which wasn't similar to test questions. He was occasionally rude to students and kept going on random tangents. You need to be extremely comfortable with trig before coming into this class. Hard to ask for help when he oftentimes berated people during lab.
Awful professor. Lectures were pre-recorded and lacked depth, leaving us unprepared for homework. Assignments felt rushed, expected to understand complex material immediately after starting a chapter. His grading was overly harsh and unforgiving. No partial credit on final. He was seeming lazy and uninterested in student success. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
his teaching style was a little questionable. involves a lot of mental math and often felt very lost and confused in his work. you need to have pages of identities and formulas memorized. is very fast paced and covers 2/3 lessons a class. homework does not help nor prepare you for exams. go to office hours and watch his lecture videos.
When compared to other tough professors I've had in the past, Professor Chiek has to be the most difficult and inconsiderate one of all. I understand the aggressive approach and "tiger mentality" that he is going for but quizzing students on something he "taught" literally 5 minutes prior is just awful. He reads off the book and doesn't teach. 0/5!
If you are a STEM major of any kind, I highly recomend. There's a lot of homework in this class, but that's how math works, you have to do it over and over again until you understand it. Great professor, very straight forward and will always help you when you're struggling until you understand. This is how math is supposed to be done, 10/10 class
He seems like a good teacher at first. But the exams are nothing like the reviews, homework, or examples he shows in class, its completely different and difficult. The class feels like a trap. If you actually want to learn and not have your grade be a C or less, avoid him. Homework is heavy and his class average for our exams were less than 35%
BEWARE STUDENTS OF RCC THIS IS A WARNING TO ALL STUDENTS PROFESSORS ARE WRITING FAKE REVIWS TO MAKE you feel the class is okay, when their classes are very hard and intentionally screw YOU OVER
