It's hard to understand her sumtimes and horrible at explaining concepts related to math. The course should be a fairly easy course but not a very good instructor.
She has an accent but is mostly easy to understand although the textbook teaches concepts better than her i think. She is nice and funny, not the worst teacher to be stuck with
She's nice and kind although she's quite traditional and got an accent. Her lecture is clear and easy to understand. Exams are based on the notes.
accent makes it hard to understand, moves VERY fast in class. notes written from first minute until after the buzzer, and talks while writing, which is distracting when trying to copy previous notes. MUST STUDY FOR EXAMS
Overall, she is quite good but her accent is definitely tortured. Her exam is not that hard and her homework assignments are quite easy. If u study from her notes, u would sure do well.
She teaches step by step... Her exams are quite easy compared to Ivan Baggs.. And her Sample Exam questions are always harder than her exam..lol!
She is so cute. Her exams are definitely challenging, but fair. She teaches very traditionally, and she will help you if you ask for it. She has an accent but it is very easy to understand her.
Really good prof, very nice, european syle of teaching, if you want a good mark, come to class and study her practice exam questions
She is a nice lady, very funny. But as I am an international student, on her 1st class I totally can't understand her English. I suggest her to take an ESL class. Also her notes are exactly the same as the ones in the text book..I always study by myself at home. Her exams are pretty simply though :)
Very nice, very funny. Moves fast in class (accent is present, but not a problem). If you need help, though, always willing to make herself available.
She moves too fast! She's hard to understand! Uses European notation, which makes things more difficult!
Interesting Romanian style of teaching, the class had a very fake feeling to it though, which had some to do with her teaching style. Always eager to help students learn. Teaches directly from the textbook, so often it is no help if you don't understand her notes. Simple tests.
She tryed so hard to speak as clearly as possible through her accent and did pretty well. Her notes were clearly written and easy to understand. I liked her a lot and she was easy to get a hold of for help. Exams were tough though. Overall if you do the work you'll get the grade. Would reccomend.
bad, bad prof. made mistakes in class regularly, couldn't explain anything in proper english, stereotyped orientals as "natural mathematicians" (not joking), and was generally just completely out to lunch. she may be nice, but she'd make a better elementary teacher than professor.
Excellent teacher! Kind and nice with her students. Very good in explaining sophisticate concepts in simple ways. Always available for help. Good notes, lots of examples. If you can, take her classes.
She overcomplicates things so much it's unbelievable. Better learn from the textbook, or even WebCTmakes more sense. Her accent got really irritating. A frustrating problem is she mixes printingand cursive, so the letters m and n get really confusing. Also, all her notes are examples only so you have to teach yourself how to do calculus. Have fun :P
VEEE-NERA was alright. Having already taken high school calculus, this was just the same thing. If I handn't, it would have been a different story. She always takes the toughest approach to solving problems. She is nice, helpful, and pretty funny sometimes. I feel sorry for her allergies sometimes.
She's helpful if you ask for it after class. Her final was harder than i thought it would be. Her midterm was easy.
Great instructor! Very helpful, always willing to help and never makes anyone feels stupid. The final exam was hard but fair. Recommended!
excellent teacher
I am so relieved to have had this prof. Her notes are so easy to learn from, and the textbook is good to learn alternate ways of solving problems (she does tend to over-complicate things). Her tests are straight forward- no tricks! Follow her procedures though, because you can pick up extra marks and still get the wrong answer.
Interesting woman. Thick accent but she speaks as clearly as she can. Good notes but you have to attend every single class because she doesn't put them up on the internet. Easy midterm, very hard final. Extremely helpful if you go during office hours. Seeing how all the other math 113 teachers I've heard of aren't that great either, take her.
She's really nice and helpful if you ask. Attendance is necessary cause she doesn't post on webCT. EASY midterm but the final was definitely a tough one. Her jokes are pretty funny only because they're lame. I'd definitely take math with her again though.
If you're confident enough in reading mathematics, you can teach yourself the material, as her lectures are more or less straight from the textbook. However, she's very friendly, approachable, and clear. Will gladly assist those having difficulties. Both her exams and assignments are very reasonable. You can easily succeed in her class.
Really good teacher with really good notes. Very helpful during office hours and in general. Makes jokes in class and is easy to understand despite accent.
All she does is write down some notes, and then does examples on them. She writes real fast, so I find it impossible to write the notes, and listen/learn from her. If you don't write the notes, you can't get them on the internet, which is lame. Horrible. She shows the material, but fails at teaching it.
A very sweet lady! I really enjoy her class even though she does move a bit fast at times. You do have to do a bit of learning by yourself, but there is just so much in the course so that should be expected. You can definitely tell that she cares about her class! I would be very happy to enroll in a class taught by her again.
Tries her best to help students learn despite the tough syllabus. Doesn't post notes so you must attend class but her notes are excellent. Slight accent may be hard to understand at first
If you enjoy writing an average of 6 pages of notes a class, she's for you. writes notes from beginning to end with only a 30 second break. If you don't go to class you are screwed. 2 Girls cried during final. Hard final. She is a nice lady just a real lousy teacher.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! :) A wonderful prof!!!
Okay, so as i heard a guy beside me sayy I battled death when it came to her final.Wow was that a tough onee!.. her midterm was easy but thats just cause i took math 31 if i didnt that woruld have been different, i couldnt imagine it.she made the final SO hard :( just wrote it yest.. she killed us.
A very nice and interesting prof. The only problem for me was following her in the class... I usually ended up writing 6-8 pages of notes and examples during each class.
Wow, I took Math 31 in High School and still got completely burned on the final. If you enjoy cramming before the final, then please, take this class! Notes taken in class are fast-paced, and it`s just not manageable if you`re taking 3-4 science courses in the same term.
her accent is annoying, and can be difficult when she is explaining math terms for ppl who didnt take math 31. she does all of her notes by overhead examples, it can be hard to read and she makes you feel really stupid if you ask questions in class. her syllabus had errors in it about labs causeing half the class to almost fail that portion
Amazing Prof. Was a pleasure being taught by her. Excellent notes, lots of examples, course well organized. Recommended!
I love going to her class. She is very nice, confident and easy to approach. Wish I could take her again!
Very sweet lady, also very funny. Excellent prof to have if you learn by going through examples in great detail. Has long pages of notes which are tiresome to write but are helpful when completing assignments. Had the highest amount of people achieve 100% on the midterm compared to the other profs. I had her for math100 and math 101 & loved her
Pretty awesome all around. A lot of people will comment on her accent but I found she communicate crystal clearly. Just listen and write. Her notes were well beyond thorough. If you know her notes you will do well in the class. Very funny, very approachable, and will focus on each student as an individual. Truly awesome. I'm sad she won't do 309 :(
ok I had the pleasure of being one of her students in MATH 100 and 101(got A+ in both). She is truly an amazing Prof, caring, helpfull and very very approachable. She has an accent;nevertheless, she speaks CRYSTAL CLEAR.My advise is not to miss her lectures+her notes, they are EXTREMELY helpfull.
Accent takes some getting used to. Will answer questions but can sometimes be harsh in explanations if you don`t understand right away but very fair. Lots of examples. :)
Great prof! very helpful if you approach her. Although she doesn't answer questions after class because she's always in a rush to her next class, neverthless, approach her during her office hours and she does a great job explaining.
love her. she's so adorable with her accent (+easy to understand!) plus you can tell she tries really hard to make math as simple as possible (it IS 113 so most ppl haven't taken calculus). her notes are clear, homework is extremely easy, midterm was basically exactly the same examples from her notes. highly recommend her!
I would deinfately advise switching out of this class at all costs. Her notes are detailed, thorough, and she gives tons of examples, however, she never explains what she's doing. She writes her notes and reads them off, but by the end of class you have no clue where any of the answers came from. She also tends to be cranky.
ONE WORD, just enroll in her class!!!
I had her for Math 100, 101 and 102. She was very funny and had good notes, very approachable too.
stupid,absolutely stupid!
Just drop out before you regret it.
She is adorable and her accent is cute. Her notes are detailed, thorough, and she gives lots examples. Exams are all from notes. She spends all time in class writing her notes and I spend all time copying. She never explains the math. She just writes her notes and reads them off. At the end, I still have to figure out the material by myself....
Let me start off by saying that Verena is a sweetheart with a great sense of humour. However, her style of teaching is not my cup of tea. From the first day, she started writing notes like crazy, and it was often difficult to catch up with her. I left each class frazzled and confused about what I had just learned, forcing me to drop out.
Very entertaining prof. Her accent is funny but still understandable. Hard to approach as she often misunderstands what you ask. Gives lots of examples but does not explain them. However if you read the book then you're set. She is the easiest exam marker i have ever seen. Draw a number line and boom 2 points! She really just wants everyone to pass
Great teacher, she is very helpful if you go to see her and prides herself on having the class with the highest average. Best bet though is to brush up on your calculus (or learn a bit about it) before entering her class
She seems to be very knowledgeable, but makes next to no effort in the area of explanation. She begins her class by going through examples on the board, and doesn't stray much from this approach. Unless you already understand the material, this class isn't for you.
If you know Calculus from high school and want a potential 4.0 GPA booster, take her class. Even though her accent is thick, it isn't bad, and she goes quite slow with the notes. Could vary it with more than just notes for every lecture though. I haven't opened my textbook once all semester.
She's such a kindhearted and funny woman, she always made sure we could do our MATH XL assignments and goes out of her way to have questions omitted from them if they're too long. DO NOT miss class, things are not necessarily explained but she writes A TON of notes, they're very good and once you read them over the material is very clear. Awesome!
She goes very fast in terms of her lecture notes. You might find yourself just copying notes for the entire class, but if you go home and review your notes, you will appreciate them. Her final is very fair (not very hard) and she gives very good examples. She'll even do questions from the Math XL homework to help you. She's very nice! :)
Horrible subject to teach but she did an okay job. It's straight notes all class, but her finals are directly based on her notes. I didn't use my textbook at all.
Excellent. Her notes are your key to succeeding in this course. ALL her exam questions were replicas of the examples she gave us. Study her notes properly, don't leave it till last minute, and her course should be very easy. However, she might be a little fast for those who have never taken calculus.
She uses every second she has in the class, so for your own good you should attend, because she goes quite fast on the notes. Midterm exam was easy but final was brutal, be sure to know your material really well! But overall nice prof, but somewhat strict and serious. Her accent is still acceptable, some find it cute and some might find it annoying
best prof ever!
Very cute and funny. Class time is used up completely. Always available for questions and concerns. Mid term and final very straight forward if you follow her reviews. Mathxl assignments are somewhat harder than what she expects you to know. Great Prof!
She is a sweet lady and a pretty good teacher. Notes are very useful and I only opened the textbook once. Fairly thick accent but she is amusing. Be sure you can copy fast though!
She's a pretty good prof. Her notes are helpful make sure you understand them inside and out. Her midterm was easy but her final was extremely hard. She uses ALL the class time and doesn't waste a second. Make sure you can copy down notes fast.
She was so scary at first but she's quite sweet at times. She's a really great prof and gives lots of examples. Dont buy the textbook! i never even opened my book cuz everything i needed was in her notes and MathXL. Her notes were well organized and has all u need to do good in her exams. Just makes sure you can write really fast :P
Her exams and assignments are very fair. But she only gives you a lot of examples and really none definite definition for the materials. So you should figure out what she is doing in her class. Otherwise, you don't understand the entire course.
She is a good prof. Her notes are great but she writes too fast. HWs are quite hard but are a great practice for the exams. Practice exams are very similar to the actual ones, do them and you'll be fine. You can get a good grade, but its math so you have to work towards it. Class is not easy but is not insanely hard either. I really recommend her
She has a thick accent, but you'll eventually get used to it. She's a very sweet lady :) She likes to crack jokes sometimes. If you don't understand something, ask!! She will explain it so you will get it. Don't bother buying the textbook, you will never open it! Waste of money. Do the old exams she posts online, her exams are similar to them.
at first she seems quite intimidating, but is really quite sweet. her accent is pretty thick but i don't have any trouble understanding her. she is always available to answer questions. midterm was super easy.
She gives a lot of examples in class but her accent is so thick you can't hear her explanations. If you didn't take calculus in high school you're pretty much screwed.
You don't learn anything in this class. She only does examples. The difficulty of the ones in class never match the ones in homework or exams. She does not really teach the concepts just shows you how to do the problems and then you have to figure out what is going on. Her accent is a bit of an issue as well. I wouldn't take a class from her again
Very rude to students for no reason. Maybe split personality? Her notes and examles don't prepare you for homework or tests. Didn't even tell us what would be on final. Makes many mistakes in lecture notes; students have to correct her. Examples are vague, too few and not complex enough to help you do the real math questions. Any prof but her!
Smart prof, however her methods seem odd and more difficult than they really are. Be prepared to write a lot (and fast). Her accent takes time to get over, but after you adjust, she becomes clear. Exams are not easy and you have to know the material inside and out.
Very eazy fianl and midterm...even if i missed some classes, i still got A+...cant find any other courses easier than hers
Decent...good examples and jokes, rude at times but good with examples
All you do is write and copy notes. She doesn't do much explaining at all. You're basically learning by your own. She moves extremely fast too. When she does examples, she just goes through them quickly... doesn't ask you how to do them, just rushes through them. I feel like she's showing, not teaching... terrible joker too.
She was doing almost everything perfectly this semester, until the last couple of weeks. She did not so important examples all along the semester and in the end she didn't have enough time to cover the MOST important topics of the course properly. Her examples are really helpful unlike a lot of other profs out there. RECOMMENDED.
Honestly good prof. Gives you what you need to know. Super helpful and clear. Always willing to reply and help out. Recommended.
Very good prof, you should definitely take her calculus class. notes are clear and she tests what she taught in class. You have to be a fast note taker. Just study her notes and you'll do fine. Recommend!
She has a thick accent but you get used to it quick. Her notes are clear and she provides many examples. She says to look at the textbook for extra help, and she posts old exams on eClass. Class isn't mandatory but you should go. She genuinely cares about her students, so she emphasizes what you need to know. Not the best, but pretty good.
I was considering switching out of her course after the first couple lectures, but I'm so happy I didn't! I got used to keeping up with her crazy note-writing pace, and the class was a breeze. Genuinely nice lady! Warning - she went over time almost every day in her 50 minute lecture, so make sure you don't have a class across campus right after...
Her notes are messy and the examples are slightly better. Slight accent, you get used to it. However, she is very helpful. The midterm and finals are a bit hard if you don't study. The assigned homework seemed even harder than the exams. Word of caution: her time management (especially towards the end of the semester) is horrible. Expect overtime.
Speeds through examples, messy notes, but attempts to explain many concepts
Hrimiuc's class is far from a GPA booster, this class consists of constant rushing through examples and theory, and do not expect any help. Although she prides herself with 19 years of teaching it feels like she just started this profession, my reccomendation is to stay away, this is a do it yourself class rather than a math class.
I wasn't in her class but i only attended the first 3 lectures and I found out that she goes way too fast like my friends said. She covers the course topics so fast. You have to be a fast note taker and because of it, it's hard to actually pay attention. Stay away!!!
A great prof. I took her class last term and I loved it. She is very knowledgeable and uses many examples in her lectures. Lots of writing, very clear and to the point on her lessons. Very helpful in office hours. Gives review packets for each exam, all worth. And overall she is a very nice lady. Take her class, period.
Easy course. She has a systematic approach to math problems. However, she does not develop the theory and does not try to make 'sense' of the problem. Even if you ask a question she has a "do this" response. If this is your last math course, Venera will get you through it. If not, avoid her or get familiar with the textbook.
Extremely nice and sweet lady, unfortunately not the most incredible teacher. Pretty quiet and doesn't know how to use a mic, so we all had to sit near the front, lucky we had a small class. Prepares you pretty well for exams. Interesting side note, she was away on vacation for a week and her husband Dragos subbed. He's an amazing prof.
good prof, helpful, and exams are easy, they are not exactly the same as practice but very similar, I though 215 was going to be harder than 214, but it turned out to be easier with her, the entire class is about integrals and then you get into 3d, not easy but like all math with practice youll be fine
She only does useless examples that have nothing to do with the assignments, she doesn't explain a single thing about the course material; she's just a board-typing machine. Skip class & read those examples from the book if u do take her. If u ask a question she always replies:"I dont understand ur question".Made my engineering first semester hell.
Nice lady, but rushes through material, making some sort of error in almost every example. Can be impatient and snaps when people talk in class, even if they're talking about the material.
She is one of the best profs from my first year. Extremely helpful, super sweet, kept the class lively and easy to listen to. Clear examples and lots of examples. Strongly recommended for first years, She made the transition easy.
Very hard to understand because of her accent. Her notes are hard to keep up with, and not the greatest, but not the worst. I had to attend a different professor's lectures after a while, just because I found her accent so hard to understand.
Anyone who believes her accent is hard to understand is wrong, it's only hard the first week. She is a very nice teacher who does many examples; however, I found her unhelpful after class as she was always "too tired" or her "head hurts." All in all though, not bad at all.
She is a very good teacher, who does many examples in class. She does make mistakes once in a while and uses excuses to cover it up, but the class is very fun and intriguing. She was very helpful for preparing us for the midterm; although, not so helpful outside of class. Textbook was completely useless; don't buy it.
She explains examples pretty well and is very engaging with students. Assignments were easy. Midterm was also pretty easy but beware of the final. It was brutal.
Very knowledgable teacher. You can tell she knows her stuff. Sometimes because of this she seems to be rushing through examples, but she is very helpful after hours if you don't understand something. Just pay attention in class and take a lot of notes. I never once looked in my textbook.
Got progressively worse as the semester went on. Absolutely could not stand people talking class, and several times, would stop teaching and lament how disrespected she felt by those talking. Often rushes, makes mistakes which made tough, abstract topics like math induction 10x harder. Final was brutal.
While I personally found this class to be painfully difficult, this prof definitely made things more enjoyable than my last prof. She gives adequate time for note-taking, patiently answers all questions, and keeps a upbeat, fun attitude for the majority of the time. Would definitely recommend if you have the option to learn from her.
Very nice prof. I never feel such clear on Math! She is a super nice lady and I strongly recommend her class! At first I don't like her much because of her Romanian accent, but later I love her!I don't understand why she got such a low mark on rate my pro...
Wonderful woman. She was an excellent calculus teacher and I would highly recommend this sweet lady!
Such an amazing prof. She is so wonderful! I love this woman! Easy A+ using her notes and helpfulness.
She is a super good prof it was just me..I messed up the course. If you don't practice the examples and come to class to take notes you are screwed! She is a really nice professor and so is her husband.
Awesome Possum!
This prof is not a nice lady. She has a thick accent and goes through the material way to quickly considering half the people in the room can't understand what she is saying. Also, don't be late for class unless you want to get an earful. Didn't seem to matter that the lecture was in Telus building which is on the outskirts of campus.
Rushes the material. Way too fast for anyone to follow. Kindhearted but that won't help anyone pass the class. Doesn't write notes, just displays a slide. Good luck. 102 with her is managable, but 101 is unbearable.
She isn't the most popular prof which is good because her class size is smaller. She has very clear notes and pumps out an insane amount of examples.
You can't ever understand what she is talking about, and it isn't because of her accent. She makes mistakes in the in class examples at least five times per class and the students need to correct her on what she did wrong. She is a nice lady, but she is a terrible teacher, DO NOT let her teach you.
She is monotone when she speaks which makes it difficult to listen because she makes the subject sound boring when it is already difficult. She makes many mistakes in class which shows that she does not prepare her material beforehand, and she decides that she needs to give you every piece of material instead of teaching the what you need.
Excellent teacher. Works lots of relevant examples in class. Very organized.
Venera does MANY examples of varying levels of difficulty which is helpful on exams. Not the best at explanations though, she kind of just writes and writes and writes and does not stop. She doesn't make the exams, the Department of Math and Statistical Sciences does. Midterms is very simple but final is significantly harder.
She's not the greatest teacher, she does a lot of examples which help with the weekly worksheets. She goes pretty fast through her class but posts the notes online so it's not a huge issue. If you find math difficult then probably go see her after class since she doesn't explain much during. But it's a pretty easy class, easy midterm and final.
Dr. Hrimiuc is a kind professor who is ready to help you if you go to her office hours. Her lectures have no breaks, just pure note-taking and doing examples. She emphasizes memorizing formulas and using them, without a deep understanding of why. The textbook is not used at all and is only for your own reading. MT 30%, Final 55%, many assignments.
She's really organized and does A TON of examples which is good, but she ruins it with her exams. She has no idea what part marks mean and 90% of the exam relies solely on memorization of formulas. There are better profs out there.
Venera was a very good Math 114 prof. She explained concepts clearly, and gave good notes and lots of examples of varying difficulty, which helped with the weekly worksheets. She is helpful during office hours and makes sure you understand your mistakes. Spent an entire class reviewing for the midterm, when not all profs did this. Would recommend.
Excellent prof. Lectures were pretty well done, notes are well organized, lots of examples. Midterm was very fair as long as you put in the time to make sure you knew the material.
I didnt enjoy going to her lectures... She didnt spend time wisely on examples and always followed pace with the department. I appreciate when teachers slow down on the tough stuff, whereas she didnt. I was not impressed.
Venera is a nice lady and she wants to help. Her class is not easy, but if you do work then you'll get a good grade. She tells you exactly what she wants and is fair about it. I prepared the midterm exam using only her notes and I got an excellent grade. I hope that my final will be the same! Great instructor!
Venera is a nice, cute lady. I found her 241 class to be average, not too hard but definitely didn't come easily. I only got 1/4 questions on the midterm completely correct but I got 89% so she gives marks for trying/showing your work. Don't skip class, do lots of practice , and write down everything you know and you should be fine. Only 5 Assn.
Venera is absolutely amazing! Had her 8am throughout the semester, but didn't mind showing up at all. her lectures are great, she tells you what's important for her tests! Probably one of my favourite profs this semester. She goes fast at times, but if you review your notes outside of class you'll understand the concept, solely based on her notes.
Venera was great. Her notes are comprehensive and helpful, with examples of varying difficulty. She also helped us a bit with worksheets/homework. She is a very nice lady in person. Her midterm was fair, final was easy. She is helpful in office hours in helping to understand mistakes. Would definitely recommend her for anyone taking Math 114.
My favorite proff by far. She is the cutest old lady and she was the only reason 8 am classes weren't brutal. She gives lots of examples and if you went to class, you got exam related questions. Strongly recommend her for anyone that needs a good first year math proff.
She makes lots of small mistakes in class. Fairly good professor overall.
Venera was a great prof. Her lectures were interesting and helpful, and she helped out a lot in her office hours. Midterm was fair and easy, final was hard.
Dr. Hrimiuc has such an amazing lectures, if you go to class you will get the concepts but if you skip, then it would be harder. She sometimes teaches fast but she asks about it a lot. Overall she is better than most other math profs and I find her to be the best!
Venera is a good teacher. You can tell she cares about her students and wants to help. She does go through the contents very fast and doesn't not give you a lot of time to understand the content.
I agree with others; she does go very fast, but that's just because she has a lot of material to cover. And I personally found her accent easy to understand. You can tell she cares about her students; she often helps us with our online math problems in class. I found the course difficult, but it was not because of her; calculus is just hard.
Venera was very good. Helped us with homework and had good notes in her lectures. Midterm was fair and easy but final was much harder and lowered my mark. Although she didn't make the exams, the department did.
Loved Venera, a very sweet and caring lady. Her accent wasn't too bad and her lectures and notes were clear. Went fast, but there was lots of material. Midterm was ok, final was very hard.
She was excellent and helped a lot in office hours.
Amazing first year math teacher. She was my fav prof and you can do well in the class solely based on the notes she provides
Really enjoyed her lectures. tests were very fair. nice lady, willing to help, makes sure you understand the concepts. very patient when helping during her office hours. would take her class again!
Venera was amazing! Great notes, easy midterm. Very approachable in office hrs. Final was very hard and this is ultimately what lowered my letter grade. Otherwise, she helped the painful class of math 114 more bearable.
Venera was a very nice lady and had good lectures. Was a very good lecturer for an early 10 AM class. Very good first year teacher and helped a lot in office hours. Had good notes to study from. Midterm was ok and fair but final was hard.
Venera was a great and caring lady and gave very good notes. Her lectures were fast-paced but still covered everything you need to know. Midterm was easy but final was hard. Great prof for a first-year calc class.
I found Venera to be a great lecturer. She spoke clearly and explained things well. Going to class isn't mandatory but she would give hints for the assignments so it might behoove you to go. She did say she wanted to change the format of her lectures and have the students do more self teaching and only do examples in class. I would recommend her.
Love her notes! Very clear, very organised. Before midterm and final, she has review notes containing pretty much everything you should know for the test. Also, do sample exams and practice questions because her tests are at least 60-70% based on these questions. So do them, I cannot stress this enough!!!.
Amazing professor. Makes geometry seem simple, just follow and study the proofs and assignments and you are guaranteed a high grade on midterm and final. I would take Venera's class again. B+
Venera is an awesome professor, although her final was quite difficult. It is SUPER IMPORTANT that you memorize the proof of every single theory she explains in class, as she always tests on them. Score high on the midterm because that material is way easier than post-midterm stuff.
Good prof, but her avoidance of printed notes (that are filled in by students) makes for INSANELY fast paced lectures, and so much writing that your hand will fall off. Impossible to keep up. Post lecture notes days late, not good. Cares about students, but makes too many mistakes in class. Take Dragos Hrimiuc or Omar Yaskin instead for Math 101!
She doesn't teach any proof, not even any intuition behind theorems.
Overall good lecturer. Clearly explained everything as needed, the lectures are well organized. Very fair. Class notes posted on eClass. Examples solved in class, great hints for possible exam material. She cares for her students. Excellent instructor.
Excellent professor who uses examples to explain concepts. Has a fun personality that makes the course highly enjoyable. Would strongly recommend attending lectures.
Suuuuuper quick-paced lectures which made it pretty difficult to understand what was happening. Also took me half the semester to become familiar with/understand her accent. BUT by the end of the semester, I actually really liked her and her personality. Gives hints about worksheet/webassign questions. Math 114 just sucks in general
She's sweet and all but she's confusing, her accent makes it hard to understand, her lectures are too fast, the midterm was super hard, it's hard to ask questions in class and her replies to emails don't help. Having a worksheet (super hard) and a webassign due weekly was a lot to manage, one of the most stressful experiences of my entire life.
Didn't take calculus in high school but I managed a B-. She takes insanely fast notes. At times I just had to put my pencil down because my hand would probably fall off if I didn't. Fortunately, she posts the notes on eClass, so I just reviewed and wrote whatever I couldn't get in class.
Fast lectures! Does lots of practice problems similar to those on exams, worksheets, and webassign. However these extra hint notes aren't posted on eclass, so it's best to go to class. Venera really does her best to break questions down and work through as many types as problems as possible. Math 114 sucks, but it sucks less with Venera as a prof!
I loved Venera because if you came to class, she would reward you with examples for the weekly worksheets that were not available on eClass. I cannot stress how much this helped! Both the midterm and the final were very fair. I took calculus in high school but still found this course challenging due to the weekly worksheets.
Venera is a very sincere lady who is not only proficient in knowledge of the material, but also presents it in a method that is easy to grasp. Granted this course is the hardest course ive ever taken (Besides ENPH 131), I did really well due to the her lectures. Yes she writes insanely fast but she uploads all lectures online. i love you
She is simply AMAZING. Very funny and sincere. Solved examples that are very relevant to the assignments. Can be a bit fast but she posts the notes online. She explains all the concepts in a very simple way to understand. Honestly, she is definitely a 5.0, and by far the best prof I've had. You won't regret Math101 with her
Has really good notes that she posts online for easy review at any time. But don't skip lectures either. She has really good relevant examples that are on the assignments and makes it really easy to understand the topic. I see a lot of people say the writes too fast, but in my class she asks "am I going too fast?" like every 5 seconds.
Venera was a good prof, who used a lot of examples to explain the topic to the class. All the notes were handwritten in class (though she did post them afterward) which allowed you to go through everything along with her. Midterm was pretty fair (a little long) but the final was insanely difficult.
Very good notes. A bit fast but you will get used to it in a couple of weeks.
Venera was a perfectly fine professor. If you have her, expect for her to yell at students at least once each lecture for various reasons. She doesn't allow you to write the angle symbol the way every other instructor does because she doesn't like it. It was a hard change after 15 years that way.
she gets mad when u ask questions. she doesnt explain she just gives u notes
Effective notes, great examples.
She will yell. I'm not going to lie to you. If you ask a question during lecture, she will make you feel stupid and tell you that the answer is right in front of you. However. She cares that you pass, and she gives answers to the weekly worksheets in class. SO basically, show up, ask her questions outside of lecture and shes an amazing prof.
Great professor! Useful examples! Do not skip lectures because she can give you more examples in class than the notes in e-class.
She is a very nice professor and is always promoting questions to be asked in class. Many people think that she's yelling or getting mad at someone when asking a question, but I really don't believe she means for it to come out that way.
Venera is very kind and caring, she may sound angry when she answers questions, but she really isn't. I recommend attending lectures because she does extra examples that help with the weekly worksheets. There's also weekly WebAssign questions that you need to do. You don't actually need the textbook, just the online code to do the homework.
I love this professor. She gave us examples to make theories easy to understand. Tests were fair and it's easy to get good grade if you spare some efforts on all works. She usually made some jokes in class. She's friendly and easy to reach. :) HOWEVER, lecture notes were incomplete on eclass, and this was the way in which she dealt with skippers.
Attendance may not be required, but her lectures have really helped me a lot in this course. Listen carefully when she says "only for you", or "may show up in the final / midterm / worksheet" as the following notes (not in eclass) will come in handy. She often put notes to be memorized for the finals or midterm in a box so take note of that.
Shes awesome and I found this class very easy, but keep in mind I took calculus in highschool so you will most likely find it difficult if you dont have any calculus background. Her practice exams are almost identical to the real exams.
Shes the best. She can come off kind of sassy when someone asks her a question but she really is the sweetest. Her exams are sent from heaven. Theyre very straightforward and almost identical to her practice exams. Study the practice exams thoroughly and expect an A.
Really enjoyed taking the class with her. She really cares about her students and puts in the effort to make sure you understand. Shes writes at a fast pace but just keep up and dont screw around in class and youll be fine. All assessments are very fair and clear. Would love to have her for another math class.
Spring/Summer -You'll just end up coping notes in lecture, with little time to process, questions poorly received often rudely answered. -Pace is fast, class notes are example based, theory is self learned at home. -If you lack, prior knowledge in this subject it be difficult to learn from lectures -Audit worthy. -good luck...
Clear explanations of the multivariable concept. But didn't teach the theories of some calculations , like curvature.
Prof. Venera is blunt, straight forward, and knows what she's doing. Lectures are spent on practice questions that she goes through step-by-step. However, she doesn't have time for many questions so if you need help, ask a TA.
A lot of homework, even for a math course, but the prof explained everything great, also made sure to upload her lecture slides online
Made the material so easy to understand!
funny
She is quite scary to start with, but if you get used to it, she is a good prof and explains topics quite well. Most of class time is just her working through examples. She isn't very open to questions during class though.
Awesome prof
Horrible, horrible lectures, she just rushes through examples and gets extremely irritated when anyone asks questions. All of class is spent trying to copy down notes quickly. I've stopped going to lectures because it's just a waste of time, and all my learning in the class is self taught. If you haven't taken Calc before, good luck.
She was never available for help and when I did get into one of her office hours she wasn't willing to help me or answer the questions I had. She told me I 'should know this' and asked if I had a different question.
Online is a whole different ballgame for all profs, as good as she may be in class I have thought online has not been bad. She says she doesn't have time anytime you ask a question during a lecture. She just goes really quickly through lectures solving questions barely explaining anything.
She was a terrible online prof, she just rushed through online lectures, got mad at anyone that wanted to ask a question, barely responded to emails. She may be good in person but was just terrible online
Venera was such a hard prof when it came to online learning. As a first-year she didn't explain anything and assumed we knew most of the stuff beforehand. When I handed in my assignments online she took off marks because my picture was SIDEWAYS. She didn't give any slack to first years learning how to do uni online at all. DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!
She was horrible with online class; she had no idea how to use eclass. I was extremely disappointed in UofA Math Department because of the fact we only had one full lecture per week. Our lecture time was supposed to be 240 mins/week, but they were cut to 160 mins to accommodate PROFs office hours into class time, therefore lectures were rushed.
DONT RECOMMEND. She was not good online and not accessible outside class. Only did well because I had taken Calculus before this class. Doesnt respond to emails and made online learning so difficult.
If you are going into calculus with no prior experience in the subject this prof is not for you. She rushes through examples during her lectures and does not give enough time for questions on the midterms to accommodate for the new format of exam taking due to the pandemic. Surprised I passed.
She takes a while to respond to emails, but she will help you alot if you attend office hours. There was a time when our test grades were made unavailable and she wouldn't even try to fix it. Don't take the class if you do not have any prior calculus experience as you will be in for a rough ride.
This is easily one the worst professors to take a Calculus course from for new students. In my personal experience, (which was online) expectations were consistently unclear, assignments were nothing like anything discussed in class, hard to understand, not open to helping. To top it off, my midterm(s) were lost and my final became 60% of my grade.
Be prepared to teach yourself calculus, and be prepared to do actual work on your first day because she goes straight into the course and turns into math Eminem in the process. Frequently makes minor errors in her lectures, next to impossible to get a helpful response from her outside of class. If you know your stuff though, tests are fair.
if you didn't take math 31 in highschool you are screwed. Its the same content but she goes way to fast and uses office hours to teach so you can't ask questions and you aren't allowed to ask questions during the lectures.
She is nice and well-prepared
I had her online for my first ever university math class, and it sucked. She didn't ever explain anything, just rewrote her notes for an hour every class. If you ask questions most of the time she will get mad. Had to teach myself a lot and had to get help from peers. She did provide decent practice questions and study material though.
She was funny and gave good notes along with applicable examples during each and every class. Her only flaw is that she makes it quite stressful to ask questions during lectures so approach her after class or during office hours. Once you accept her flaw, you will realize she is a sweetheart who would likely succeed in a military environment.
