She jumps around a lot; students were correcting her.
So much readings to do, so little explanations during lectures.
Students corrected her. She doesn't know the material and there are tons of readings. Not a hard course though.
has been corrected multiple times by students on simple material, seems out of her league with the content. Bounces around topics and doesn't explain seemingly anything from the textbook readings in class. Often students just leave part way through when she appears to get flustered.
Super helpful, resembles Christina yang from greys anatomy
Very unimpressed.
She confuses herself and has no idea what she is talking about. Continuously gets corrected by students
Vera Tai sucks. She does not explain anything properly, but when she attempts to it is a sight to see. Many student shave corrected her during her lectures and have found her to skip over important information without explaining her thoroughly.
Her slides are terribly designed and are nearly blank, but they have different information than what is in the textbook, so you realistically need to read both the chapters and the slides.. worst prof so far.
Terribly unclear instruction in her lectures. Students would be better off staying home and reading the textbook from front to back.
She is no help what so ever. Her slides are terrible, and she only talks about the simple concepts and not the things that are difficult to understand. Better off reading the whole textbook.
Awful prof, lectures slides contain no important content and the little content provided is often wrong according to the textbook. Testable material is often never covered in lectures and most students are likely better off to memorize the textbook. She confuses students every lecture as she makes extremely frequent errors on explaining concepts.
I'm not one to skip class, but Tai makes it so hard to attend her lectures. There was a lec that involved solving calculations, and the students had to correct her results three times after she kept trying to move on. Seriously? I've heard she's new so maybe she'll improve eventually. Tip: read the textbook. That's your only hope in her class.
SHE IS AWFUL IN CLASS! LONG STORY CUT SHORT IF YOU DONT NEED THIS CLASS DO NOT TAKE IT. IVE BEEN TO HER OFFICE HOURS AND MOST OF THE TIMES SHE CANT SOLVE THE QUESTIONS AND IS CONFUSED AND CONFUSES THE HELL OUT OF ME. SHE EVEN POSTS WRONG SOLUTIONS AND THEN CORRECTS THEM LATER. CONFUSION PURE CONFUSION.
after the first 2 weeks i decided to not go to class and use that time to study her material and do the readings and i have found that ive been doing better than others because she continued to confuse them but not me... main tip do your own thing dont follow her slides or class notes
Absolutely miserable lectures. Literally incoherent slides. Not even sure if she knows the material herself. I wouldn't take this course again for a million dollars.
I leave class being more confused. Don't go. Just do the readings yourself & you'll be better off.
She is not great in teaching, but she has been a really nice prof. It's her first year. She doesn't talk deep about class materials, but she gives really good feedbacks. She is very responsible and patient. I just think self-tutoring is gonna be part of university after all. Can't really appreciate the way people judge her sometimes.
She's not the best but she cares about her student and she wants everyone to do well. I feel bad for her for the way students treat her, it's her first year and she's still learning. Everyone needs to give her a break, she's trying her best. Vera is really sweet and I like her as a person. if you don't do the readings and self-tutor you won't pass
She is completely unorganized and unclear when teaching lecture material. She makes the material more complicated than it is and i end up leaving the class more confused then when i entered. She doesn't know what she is talking about and multiple times students have had to correct what she is saying. Worst prof i have.
class midtern avg 44% before she curved it up
Horrible, one of the main reasons I dropped the course. Her lecture slides are very un-clear and un-organized. Would NOT recommend taking this course if she is the prof. I attended all lectures and multiple students have had to stop her to correct her on the material she was attempted to cover.
She' terrible
It was her first time teaching the course, so her lectures were usually all over the place. Some lectures only involved going through examples on Sim-U-Text to explain course concepts. Going to lecture IS IMPORTANT, some exam questions came specifically from lecture. Office hours are pointless because she usually makes you more confused.
First university prof I ever had and she left a very sour taste in my mouth
She wasn't THAT bad of a prof. Her lectures were pretty useless though, didn't really have to go to them. There's a lot of reading (not as much as other classes though). She's pretty interesting to listen to and overall a nice person, but she didn't really know what she was talking about most times in lectures. Often students had to correct her.
Really nice prof, but isn't great at giving lectures.
I did not mind her even though everyone complained about her until before our first test. At the Q & A I had asked a few questions and she responded each time in a very sassy manner. I think it's super important for teachers to make students feel open to asking questions and find it really rude the way she would answer the students questions.
She is a mess. she is all over the place and doesn't seem to know what she is talking about half the time
I probably went to class 3 times. She posts all of her lectures online so there is really no point in going. She did not teach me anything though, had to read the textbook and relied on youtube videos to teach me concepts! Most exam material comes from her lectures tho! Overall, worst prof I've ever had.
Awful at teaching and exams are very difficult
Vera Tai wasn't great but I didn't think she was as awful as everyone says. Lectures attendance is useless cause everything is online and she's not great at lecturing. As long as you are prepared to read the textbook you'll be fine. Wouldn't really ask her questions though cause her answers are unclear.
Professor Tai is a decent lecturer and made lots of effort to use visuals and in-class examples. Lectures were easy to follow and iclicker questions were helpful to solidify knowledge. All lectures are posted online which is very useful for studying however, exams were challenging. Very accommodating and involved professor!!
Her lectures had no connection to the textbook. She was very disorganized and she did not know how to control the class.
Dr Tai makes a lot of mistakes in her own lectures and her teaching style is brutal. Would not take this prof again
Her teaching style is disorganized and lacks structure. Her powerpoint slides are incohesive and make little sense.
Finished this course with a mark in the 80s, No point of going to her lectures because it is very disorganized and quite frankly not related to anything that will be on the tests. You might as well go watch those 5 minute, cartoon crash course videos on Youtube than go to her lectures, it's useless. Just read the textbook and your Gr 12 bio notes.
She is not a good prof at all and was not meant to teach. She can never get a point across in lecture and always leaves the class more confused when they leave. There is no point of going to her lectures because you learn nothing and need to teach yourself the whole course from the book.
Seems lost in her own lectures. People do not show up to class anymore. Don't even bother coming to class anyways because she posts her lectures online so you can self-teach from home. Too many readings, tests and quizzes are extremely difficult
Be ready to read the textbooks because her lectures are basically useless
not a good lecturer and her powerpoints aren't set up well and too simple so they're pretty much useless to study from
Her lectures are very confusing and she teaches concepts in more complicated ways then required. Literally no point in going to lectures (she posts her lectures) and anyways, you're better off teaching yourself. The weekly quizzes and lab component really help your grades.
Her lectures are absolutely pointless and will definitely confuse you more since she doesnt really know what shes talking about half the time. Read the textbook, the weekly labs will help your mark
Idk where you can buy a PHD but she clearly did. I'm sure Vera Tai is a lovely person, but a professor, absolutely not. I've walked out of her lectures more confused about subjects I've aced in highschool and don't get me started on her prep sessions. She is absolutely brutal at explaing C-value, Hardy Weinberg and everything else biology related.
Lectures are posted online, which was the only good thing about the class. She spends too much time on unimportant stuff and rushes through difficult concepts. She does not explain concepts in a clear or easy to understand manner, and spends more time drawing with her stylus pen than necessary. So far, this is the worst prof I have had.
Lectures were confusing and not helpful. I stopped going after the first week. I love bio and Dr Tai made me very frustrated by making it incredibly dry and difficult
Top quality professor here. No textbook needed, explains everything in class, and whatever is on the lecture slides is on the exam. Only thing Dr. Tai can work on is improving the audio quality of her vids!
Don't like her, she has no idea what she's talking about.
I don't know why people hate on Tai so much. The course is easy enough that you don't have to go to lectures if you really want and her slides are pretty much everything you need to know. As a teacher though she could do a little better on organization but she was an easy transition into uni. She offers help outside of class which is nice.
A lot of people dislike Tai and I can understand where it comes from. Entering into Uni, she's a good prof to start with, all of her lectures can be found online - since her talking can make you confused. it would be better if she'd prepare her lectures more. If you did well in 12U bio - and can review/learn your stuff, then you're pretty set.
Everyone's out here hating on Vera? She's literally nothing to complain about. People are just frustrated that they're not understanding slighlty new concepts, and so they blame it on the prof. Not that she's my favourite, and I wouldn't necessarily CHOOSE her again, but if I had her next year I wouldn't complain.
Really not as bad of a teacher as everyone makes her out to be. If you care about the course and want to do well, you will. She tends to not spend enough time on some important topics but if you review well and make sure you understand the concepts, you're set. If you were okay with 12U bio and have a work ethic, this course will be a breeze.
Horrible professor. Does not explain things properly in class and exam questions do not reflect the level at which she teaches. Because of this the class averages for the exams are also always quite low.
The lectures were not detailed enough compared to the difficulty of the exams. She spent too much time drawing diagrams instead of explaining difficult concepts. She seemed friendly, but I didn't find her teaching style very effective.
She is not well liked but I believe students are too hard on her. She knows what she is talking about but may be too vague or breeze by the hard things during lecture. Everything you need to know is from her lectures and I only needed the textbook to clarify topics I wasn't sure on
Professor Tai is not the best lecturer- I walked out of her lectures more confused on topics than when I walked in. Most of the class stopped going to lectures quickly once they realized the textbook could teach us better. Tests were not too difficult but since you won't get anything from her lectures be prepared to regurgitate the textbook
Her lectures were straightforward overall. The parts that were hard to follow were just concepts that were hard to understand in general, but people would use this chance to be rude towards her even during lectures which may have affected her performance. She extended her officehours in exam period and I could tell she was trying to help.
Lectures are not clear and does not explain concepts well.
I really like her! shes amazing. her lectures are very detailed. i watch at 2x speed easily
Shes one of my favorite profs! her lectures are amazing, I watch at 2x speed. Very easy to understand. No clue why her ratings are so low.
Her lectures are good, there is a lot of them to watch but she makes things simple to understand. But then when it comes to the tests and exams she makes the questions very hard and tricky.
Compared to Niki, Vera was a godsend. Amazing lectures, concepts explained so well. Test questions were fair and came straight from the lectures. Best Bio 1001 prof for sure!
Dr. Tai conducted the course beautifully during the pandemic, as she posted clear lecture videos that covered all content thoroughly. Assessments were very hard and I felt as if we weren't really given the right tools to be prepared for them. The textbook is useless when Tai is the prof, as she covers everything in lecture anyway.
Lectures are clear and easy to understand. She uses lots of diagrams which I found to be helpful. Lecture material is basically taken from the readings.
Great prof, very clear with her teachings and getting points across.
Definitely a great prof! She seems super underrated; all the content was explained super clearly with an emphasize on tricky points.
This rating may be bias in terms of the course being online, but I had a very difficult time learning the course material from Dr. Tai. All respect to her as a person, but I found she was a very difficult professor to understand and an even more difficult grader. Biology has been my best subject for a while and was the worst this semester.
GREAT
Made first year of online biology much better. Her lectures were very informative and easy to follow, clear to listen to and she was enthusiastic about the topic. Really enjoyed her lectures. Exams were difficult but overall good course to take.
I would rather drop out of university than take this woman's class again. No clear structure, rambles on in lectures, goes off on so many tangents, nothing she says is ever tested on and you have to go out of your way and search other resources if you want a decent grade. Had no idea what she was doing and it showed.
Horrible professor. Said it would be asynchronous lectures, but takes down the lectures after 7 days without telling the class, and enough people email her and she uploads it 2 days before the midterm. Rambles on in class and hard to listen to. I would strongly recommend not taking courses if she is teaching.
Though she may be a nice person, her teaching style is not much to rave about. She does not answer questions clearly and tends to ramble. Not much feedback either. The course content has potential to be interesting.
Out of the 2 profs for this class, Dr. Tai was organized and her lectures were easy to follow (especially compared to the other prof), I found her questions to be more fair and overall her content was much more tolerable, needed to take less breaks between learning content from her. Would take again. Also she is so funny.
Idk what the other people on here are talking about bc Vera is AMAZING. Yes she takes down lectures after 7 days but its so you stay caught up. She is an amazing lecturer, if she does explain something poorly she goes over it again the next lecture. Puts effort into fun experiments during class. Content is interesting and exams are very fair. :)
The course content was interesting but would never take her again. Her lectures are well organized but she's hard to listen to (rambles, takes a long time to explain a simple concept). Feedback and marking are horrible - docks marks for random reasons. She also made the midterm (mostly short answer, describing graphs) much longer than she said
Teaches all necessary and relevant information but she rambles to an point where it is hard to stay focused, especially with asynchronous lectures. There also is so much stuff that she talks about that is unrelated to the course itself. This makes it even harder to retain the information that matters
I don't understand why her ratings are so low; I found her to be an excellent bio prof! Very straightforward in her explanations and lectures, and she's very humorous too. Takes a lot of time outside of class to respond to students on OWL too, which I really respect. I would definitely recommend her!
Super enthusiastic and fun prof. Only thing is she speaks kind of slow, but hit that 1.5 playback speed and you're good. Overall, a caring teacher who has passion for biology
Only reads the slides during lectures, horrible multiple choice questions, overall bad prof
BIO1001 was a joint proj between Profs Sharan and Tai, and Prof Tai's portion was a little bit more detailed, reading-heavy and overall a doozy, but manageable. Her content, by principle, is somewhat long and it's easy to be lost in the details, so keep up the pace. Rather tricky test questions that make you think/work for it, but a good prof.
Dr. Tai's lectures are sometimes bland but there are often key details that come up on exams. The lectures are based on textbook reading so make sure to do both. She makes practice questions in the lecture section on OWL, do they help with comprehension. Labs make up a sizeable part of your mark, do well on them. Learn to think critically!
Her lectures were not laid out well. She gets very off topic, leading to lectures being longer than necessary.
Kept lectures interesting cracking jokes here and there. Explained well and in detail. Found her quiz question to be easier than those on the exam but all were fair. Pay attention and do the practice questions and your golden.
a funny and very knowledge prof. Her and the rest of the bio 1002 team this year made this course very interesting and engaging despite being mostly online.
Vera Tai is an okay teacher. Her lectures are a bit mundane and she tends to read off her slides but she explains it sufficiently so you will understand the material. The content of the course is pretty simple as well. The multiple multiple choice questions take some getting used to, but the profs tend to boost a lot for this course, so don't worry
I found her lectures pretty easy to follow. The course was taught by multiple profs and I personally found her quizzes the easiest.
Dr. Vera Tai is a good professor. Her lectures are pretty good and while her exam questions aren't always easy, they are definitely easier on average (although that could be because her content is easier). Owl quizzes do not reflect exam difficulty though.
Vera Tai is a queen and a half. Love this woman. I wish she had taught 1002B instead of Dr.Maxwell tbh. She made bio 1001A a very enjoyable experience for me and she made it very understandable and easy to grasp. Her exam questions were so light and same with her quiz questions. Tai is an angel along with most of the bio department. Queen energy.
an absolute amazing prof! Her content was super interesting, and she was really funny too. Quiz and exam questions were always fair, and easy to understand. This was one of the few profs I was excited to, and enjoyed watching.
Not clear in her lecture. She doesn't know what are the key things of the lecture that should be addressed to the students like Niki does deliver her lecture clearly..... She need classes on how to deliver a lecture... her questions are trick and not a good way to test a students learning
Tries to pack so much info into each lecture that she spends the last 10 minutes speed-reading the slides and not explaining anything. Might as well teach yourself the content because you get nothing from the lectures. She has to correct herself every 10 seconds which gets confusing. She seems like a nice woman but her lecturing skills are horrible
Crams so much info into each lecture that she spends the last ten minutes speed-reading the slides without explaining anything You might as well teach yourself the content She also corrects herself every 20 seconds, which makes learning super confusing She seems like a nice woman but she just has horrible lecturing skills
About 30% of her lecture vocabulary is "okay". She rambles way too much and her lectures are very hard to sit through regardless of how interesting the content is.
She repeats every PowerPoint page three times. It saves my after-class time to review... so, fine lectures.
She seems nice and her lecture is not confusing or difficult. I found it easy to stay focused in her lecture compared to other lectures I have.
Her lectures are not very helpful, she mainly just reads off the slides, and one slide will repeat multiple times to the point where she will say the same thing over and over again, but then crams like 10 slides in the last 5 minutes.
Tai is good. Just good. She often struggles to explain certain subjects, but she always finds a way to do get through it somehow. Her examples are helpful, but I wish she could do some more. I also wish she would stop rushing at the end of class when everyone leaves.
Dr. Tai's lectures are horrible. They are very disorganized and she tends to ramble on about random stuff throughout the lecture. Also, she NEVER has enough time to finish all the slides, so she goes through like 20 slides in the last few minutes of class. Might as well skip the lectures and watch them online, or read the textbook.
She's okay.
hard quiz and exam question (on controversial topics) which is really disappointing but she grew on me by the end of the term she's funny and knows what she's talking about. her beginning lectures suck but the end gets easier trust.
She is okay. It's not impossible to do well in this class, but she does not leave enough time to get through all the slides and will end up rushing the last 20 slides or having to do them next class. She also reads directly off the slides and a lot of her vocabulary consists of "okay", but she is knowledgeable and wants you to do well.
Cares so much about her students! Makes herself available outside of class and does a great job providing extra resources for practice! Her lectures go fast and she speaks quickly although if you're listening/a fast typer you will be fine. Her questions on quizzes/exams are not overly difficult and they rely on information covered only in class.
I think people love to hate on her, I honestly thought she was great. Sometimes her lectures were rambly (it helped me to skip them and watch them on 2x speed online after class) but she explains things well and seemed like she genuinely wanted us to succeed. Her quiz questions are a bit tricky (blobfish is a meme at this point) but exams fair.
Her lectures were okay but she rambles and doesn't always explain concepts super well. The content she taught was fairly intuitive so I didn't find this to be an issue but could be an issue in harder classes. Exam questions are fair and based on lecture material. Focus on lectures over textbook and understanding over memorization.
I had both Tai and Sharan, there was a huge difference. Tai just kinda yells the entire time and can be really difficult to hear and understand. I also found her lectures to be very disorganized, I felt like she was just rambling the whole time. Her quiz questions were also less clear and more difficult (stuff that wasn't really taught in lec).
Vera Tai will repeat the same concept 3 times over in lecture, which sounds helpful, but the way that she doesn't isn't helpful at all. Rather than teaching information, she seems to be just clarifying information. She never finishes on time and will proceed to fly through 10 slides in the last 2 minutes of class.
Questions related to slides simple as that. There are certainly tricky questions she gives but for the most part understand her slides and you should be good. At the start of the year I disliked her teaching style and questions but they were easy enough to get the hang of.
Tbh, I found her the easiest bio prof out of the 3 for first-year bio (Sharan, Tai and Maxwell). She honestly keeps it easy as you just have to memorize her slides. As simple as that. 90+ is doable so don't stress about this course. Calc and physics are a different breed tho...
Her lectures weren't particularly exceptional but they were straightforward and her exam questions were fair.
I took a bioinf coding course with her that is not listed in the options, but she does not know how to teach effectively. Half of the questions that students ask her, she goes "Ahh I don't really know..". I simply can't trust her with the info she provides in class. She also tries too hard to take as many marks off as possible from assignments. Bad
A lot of uhs and ums in every single sentence during lecture
I found her lectures to be extremely hard to follow, with lots of filler words. She did not sound confident when teaching her material, and a lot of the time, the questions being asked in class were answered with "I.. don't know.. hahaha". She may seem easy-going, but she takes marks off and she doesn't even remember why she took them off.
Lab Assignments are weekly and marked very hard - with minimal feedback and not a lot of guidance. There are 2 presentations which are also marked arbitrarily. Lectures are very dry and there is no midterm so come final you're overwhelmed by all the content. I wouldn't take it unless you absolutely need it.
Vera's lectures can be hit-or-miss, but focusing on understanding her slides and attending study sessions will pay off. unstuck ai was a great supplementary resource for test prep.
Love her dearly, hating her is so forced. Presents things in such a digestible way.
Second time having Vera and I can say that she is a better prof in this class than in Bio1002. She took live recordings of the class and posted them on brightspace so you didn't have to go to class. Midterm was harder than the final. The content isn't hard, it's just hard navigating your way through her wording in exams.
Horrible professor. Went to her office hours to clarify a couple of things for an exam and couldn't even explain why properly she took off marks. Would not recommend.
