not so fond of this class...skips around a bit
Seems like a sweetie, but I have not been very impressed by her 1 on 1. I suck at STATS, but I don;t think she makes it any eaysier fpr me to understnad.
horrible class, not a very helpful teacher, went to her many times and she made me feel stupid, not to mention that the papers i got back after going to get help from her were still horrible marks.
Horrible prof...I could do better teaching then her! If you wanna pass stats, don't take it from her! highly recommend you avoid her at all costs.
Very poor teaching skills. She does not appear to be too intelligent or is it just an act.
i found her class quite easy. the paper was very involved for only being worth 20%. nice lady, but the woman could be a study on how upspeak completely distracts an audience from the content of the message.
She wasn't great but wasn't horrible either. I liked her class but her tests were difficult and her exam...cumulative! Fourteen chapters is a lot to know. Very mediocre overall.
intro was garbage and stats was not much better
I am not sure how she got her PhD or where she got it from. Stinson can not teach - period! The classes are boring and do not add much to the textbook. Stay home and read the book - it would be better.
A hard course but she did a good job.
What a waste of time. So disorganized and the course was useless - I did not learn anything!
She's boring and makes the material dull. Her tests aren't hard, but not mc. She repeats herself constantly and spends forever on one topic. It's difficult to attend class cause you know it's gonna be a waste of time.
she is one of the coolest people I've ever met!
Ridiculous class. Very hard and all over the place. Exams are only 4 essay questions.
This woman is very smart. Clearly she knows way more than any undergraduate...unfortunetly she is not sympathetic to this fact at honors lvl. This is good and bad. She made me a better student, but it may have been at the cost of my GPA. Think about the TAKE HOME MESSAGE when u read...
Stinson is one of the few professors I've encountered at SMU who truly care about what their students learn. Her assignments and expectations were challenging, but appropriate for an honors level class. She is enthusiastic about her teaching and research, definately a bright spot for the SMU Psych Faculty.
This class was useless because Stinson is a very poor teacher. She tells us the obvious and everything is mundane and simple. At times, she behave or is clueless.
I agree that she is a hard professor. It annoyed me that we were made to feel like idiots when we couldn't whip research methods definitions out of our asses, saying "you're honors students you should know this" didn't exactly help, and it's not our fault we wern't taught well enough. Definitely picked favorites, but the class was interesting.
Read the book, go to class and you'll get an A. This prof. does not deviate from the book, gives great hints for the exams. Very energetic and enjoyable class!
She's so demanding! She talks 14958729468 chapters per week! How am I supposed to rememeber all that?! The way she teaches is weird, sometimes she acts like a psycho person. She's the reason why I dropped out from her class, and Im not the only one. Since before I dropped out, the attendance rate dropped 50%.
Her tests were hard and she gave you a lot of reading but she's a really interesting proffesor, open to discussion and very helpful. Take the time to read the texts and attend the class and you'll find the tests aren't as hard as you'd think.
Her exams are random info. from the textbook, which is obvious she hasn't even read by her referencing to stuff that isn't even there. test questions bairly cover stuff covered in class.. extremly random questions.
Tests are difficult. Reading the textbook is very important as she tests you on a lot of material she doesn't cover in class. Not an easy A, but definitely an A is possible as long as you put the work into it. A very energetic prof that keeps your attention.
It's too hard for a first-year course. all of the tests are cumulative and the multiple choice questions are frustrating. the final was easier than the midterms though surprisingly. her class tends to be boring so i skipped them a lot. she only uses the textbook for the questions so thats enough.
she is kinda hard.. its not that hard to get an A you will just have to read the book and really know the material.. if you are looking for an easy course this is not the course. think she is a great prof and i learnt alot from her
I love her! she's so energetic and knows her stuff. The classes are pretty boring and it's not an easy course if you don't learn the material, but if you study and understand you'll do well. All the powerpoints are available on Blackboard which is helpful.
Not an easy class but a good teacher
Stinson was a sweetheart. Although it definitely wasn't an easy course, she knew what she was talking about and explained most stuff pretty well. Textbook is very helpful. Overall, very nice person
If you are looking for an easy elective course, don't get this prof. Her tests are just from text book. Does not explain well and rushes through material. Your clueless until you read the book.
Very energetic and knowledgeable of the topics. Overall a great professor and a lot to learn from. Only downside are her exams, requires extensive reading of the textbook and consists of only 2 essay questions and 1 bonus question; which I find are not nearly enough to properly base a student's knowledge of the course on.
Stinson absolutely loves forensic psyc, and it comes through. Take Psyc&Law if you can, especially online. She's very organised, loves showing and hearing about related things on the internet/news/movies/etc. She's very friendly, and pretty prompt. I'd recommend this class to any Psyc student, with reasonable effort, its an easy grade.
AH-MAZ-ING Professor! I realize a lot of the reviews here are from the intro course and yes, university is VERY different from High school. If you want a good grade you must WORK for it. I found Stinson extremely fair. Very approachable & always avaliable for extra help. Reach out to your profs guys if you're struggling.
Difficult but worthwhile. Great person and has helped me through a difficult time.
Dr Stinson was very interested in her student. she always almost begged us to come to her if needed. She kept class interesting by walking around the class, shes also very organized so you cant get lost. She did quizzes every week 5 questions 5 minutes. you have to at least read over your notes for them. midtermfinal was not easy but an OK class.
Only cares about studies, if you don't back up your opinion with scientific proof you might as well be wrong
She is very enthusiastic when talking about research but she doesn't seem to know what she is talking about. One class, an expert in the crowd spoke up and argued that most things she said were incorrect to which she had no reply. She is a very approachable prof but if you want straight answers, you probably won't get them from her.
I have no idea what the bad reviews are about! She's an amazing prof and so energetic, I've taken two courses with her now and as long as you show up, look at the PowerPoint's you'll be fine! Psych and law, the study questions she gives you are basically exactly what she asks, no surprises and a fairly generous marker.
I think she's great! this was the second course i've taken of hers (other was intro). she's super helpful and genuinely wants students to do well. a bit of a heavy workload, lots of reading, but worth it - really interesting and engaging stuff! she helps to make the material clear and is really good with keeping contact through email, etc.
Amazing prof, by far my favorite. Almost dropped the course because i didnt think id pass and i have an 88%. Such a sweet woman, really wants you to understand and explains everything clearly. I want to take all of her classes.
I took intro to psych with her and it's been my worse class. But believe me, it's nothing to do with her! I personally don't really go to that specific course, but it's an overview of psychology and some of the questions from students don't need to be asked, so it throws her off sometimes but she's always on track and a wonderful speaker!
Stinson is one of my favourite professors. She is very excited and knowledgeable about the material, and lectures are always interesting and she supplements with relevant videos and information from current events. She encourages class discussion and wants to hear your thoughts. Tests aren't easy but if you do what she asks you can get a great mark
Her directions is bad, her feedback is terrible and you must go to her office for more "Clarity" She is a tough grader, she takes off allot of points for the most trivial things. if you don't use key words. you can show up and do the reading and still do bad. The only positive is that she will extend due dates when the class tells her
I dreaded going to class every time. I didn't need to go to class, just read the textbook and you'll be fine. All she does in that class is talk about whats in the textbook and gives examples, but the book already does that. Wasn't very helpful with questions. Buy textbook.
This class was easy. You just need to read over her powerpoints and the textbook and you'll be fine for her tests. The only annoying thing was you didnt get back your midterms back, so you couldnt figure out where you went wrong. Other than that, easy A/A+. Very enthusiastic prof, a little bit crazy, but happy nonetheless.
Dr. Stinson is very enthusiastic about Psyc & Law, but I would never take her class again. All exams were 2-3 essay questions. It doesn't allow you to show that you know the topics taught in class. Her assignment was long and she took away points for the littlest things. I was excited for this class and now I'm disappointed and frustrated.
She's an amazing prof. Lots of materials and we took all chapters. Not an easy elective to take with her
Best teacher ever had. Class and text is so interesting you won't want to put it down. Did very well without having to go to class that much, she just appreciates good work not crazy about attendance which I appreciate being a single parent. Would recommend this class to anyone It will open your eyes
Doesn't care about students and learning. If you go for help, get ready to hear that you're not working hard enough, are underprepared, and would benefit more if you went to class (even if you've never missed a lecture). I took this class both online and in a class, and if she doesn't think you're putting in effort she will grade you poorly. AVOID!
Hardest marker at smu, paper is unfairly marked, expects students to be at phd level of writing, test is 3 quest to write in 1 hr. Doesnt give high grades. Use terms and examples and still gives low grade. Little feedback on how to improve. Asks For good eval of her but submits low final grades. Overly confident and low suport for helping stud
Great prof but very hard exams. You read between 40 and 160 pages per week and are given about 30 practice questions but then she only asks 2. and 1 is not on the review. It was okay as an online course because you can look up your notes but I wouldn't have done as well if I had done it in class. She as a person is great and cares and is organized!
For such a big class, Stinson was very engaging. She would give you a heads up about all material and wanted everyone to succeed. There was a fair amount of reading for a first year course, but she warned people of that in her first class. Do the online quizzes every week and you'll do fine.
Dont even get me started on her. I will never take her class ever again. She would teach use chapter 4 for example and on the the test it would be on chapter 5. She would forget teach us something and still mark us on it. The class average was 60% and my friend dropped out of uni because of her. Dont take her class unless you want to fail.
She is very engaging and passionate about psych and law. Material is very interesting and tests are easy. If you do the practice problems she gives you there shouldn't be a reason why you don't do well.
SO. MUCH. READING.
Stinson is great at lecturing, however most of what she talks about you can read about it yourself in the textbook (new chapter every week). Weekly quizzes are a little difficult... Uses bright space A LOT and gives out as much work as she possibly can! She's very little help when clarifying any questions you ask. Would not take her class again!
Prof. Stinson is a wonderful Prof. ! Always made the class interesting, really cares about the work she does, she was interested in hearing our thoughts. I always looked forward to her lectures! You need to put the effort in for this course its not easy, but she gives chances to earn extra bonus points! Hope to take a course taught by her again !!
She's a decent prof but holy hell is that class hard. For the people saying to just read the powerpoints, no. Get ready to read an entire textbook, and make sure to go to every class cause half the things on the test were from class. And online tests EVERY FRIDAY? No thank you.
Veronica was definitely one of my favourite profs in my three year university career. This class was in Intro level psychology course so it was information heavy by nature. She did an amazing job at condensing it and making sure we knew what info was most important. Oh and all of her tests/exams are multiple choice, don't take that for granted.
Took an online intro psych course with her and it was beyond easy. She is so great, gave a few extra credit tests, and the tests were pretty easy too. I would highly recommend taking an online psych course with her!
Professor Stinson is a very nice lady who is willing to help if she can, however, the class is very lecture intense and extremely difficult to do well in. Psychology was based on the midterm, final, and weekly tests. There is far too much to know in three months. I really DO NOT recommend this course as it feels impossible to do well.
Not too bad of a prof, online tests every Friday from the text and lectures. These tests are a pain but they keep you sharp and really helped me on the midterm and final. Lots of reading and it is definitely one of the harder courses, but you should expect a lot of material for psych. Go to class and read a good amount and you'll be fine
She's fun to listen to during lectures (as fun as a prof lecturing can be). Does give you a chance to earn extra credits, & exams are all multiple choice. Would definitely take another one of her courses.
Dr. Veronica Stinson. Really didn't have a great teaching format. If you didn't develop your own teaching method prepare to fail. Also she gave us 15 chapters to read for one course. Two of those chapters had chapters within them. Plus the slides were anywhere to 30-70 slides for each chapter.
Please avoid taking psychology with doctor Stinson. . Expect a strict syllabus, with quiz after quiz. Save yourself from having a panic attack. Other profs offer the same course with far less work. Doctor Stinson runs her intro courses as if they were fourth year courses
Best professor I've ever had. If you care about your education you will love her. Many commented here are millenial wimps with no future.
Dr. Stinson is such a sweetheart, and her lectures are extremely engaging. She really cares about her students :)
I love Veronica Stinson, the best prof that SMU has. Yes she makes you work for your mark, but like she says she expects us to do great work, so we should too. The things that you learn in her class are so valuable. Make sure you do the readings, and the discussions. the little grades add up. Great prof would take again and again.
Stinson is an amazing prof! She helps out whenever needed, encourages you to seek help from her, so funny and makes every class interesting. Overall wonderful human being & if you ever get the chance to take Psych & Law, I recommend it. She makes the class worth wild, and she really really cares about her students. Makes sure her students strive.
She keeps you engaged with personal examples, asks the students lots of questions to get everyone involved.
A great professor! Lectures are engaging, and you can tell that she loves what she does. Grades are based on midterms, a final, and weekly online quizzes, PLUS there's opportunities to earn bonus points. You need to actually READ the textbook, but it's easy if you just stay on top of it. The complainers on here just don't want to put in any work!
Amazing prof. Passionate, inspiring and caring. Interesting and engaging lectures. Don't take this class if you are not willing to put in SOME work.
Loved her! You have to put in the work but she really does care about her students and wants them to succeed. I would definitely take another one of her courses.
Stinson is a real gem. She's super sweet & really wants you to do well in her class. She's very accessible outside of class & her lectures are fascinating (if you're interested in the subject of course!). Overall, I cannot recommend her enough.
favourite professor at Saint Mary's, hands down
If you're taking honors seminar with Veronica watch out, it may not be what you expect. Veronica is very passionate about teaching, however the class itself is frankly a waste of money. Several assignments 3-5 pages long worth 2% regarding your thoughts and feelings. Poor class structure, no practical value for grad school. Class needs to be remade
I'm taking the online class, and I find she doesn't do much to help her students retain any information. She tells you to read the textbooks and gives you tests based off of it. there is pretty much nothing else, she doesn't give you much else to do. other than that, the tests are reasonable based off of the textbook.
I LOVE MRS PROFESSOR STINSON! She made me feel so good about myself even though I was struggling a lot with my first semester of university EVER being online. She shows that she cares about her students and she always makes sure we know that we can reach out to her at any point for anything at all. :)
Horrific professor! I had her for Psych & Law a couple years back. First time I ever failed anything. She lacks the ability to teach and to connect with her students. I went to see her about my unwarranted fail on a test and she was SO rude to me. I couldn't believe it. She was the reason I had a breakdown that semester. Awful! Avoid at all costs.
Dr. Stinson is an incredible prof and a gem of a human. I've had her for multiple courses and she goes above and beyond for her students. She genuinely cares and she also makes you work HARD for your grades. Honours seminar was challenging but has so much value for those pursuing a career in this field. Veronica will prepare you for what's to come!
I'm planning to major in Psych and Dr. Stinson was lovely. She was really easy to talk to during office hours and she gave lots of opportunities for bonus marks. Her online modules contained all the textbook information and they include a lot of interesting videos. Overall I loved Dr. Stinson!
Dr. Stinson is a very optimistic prof who cares for her students! She made sure to accommodate the students and she understands that they have priorities outside of school and makes sure her students have time to do it all! The course (psyc 1200) has a lot of textbook reading so get ready! Overall would take a course with her again!
I took Psychology and Law in the spring and Dr. Stinson is an amazing professor. She's very knowledgeable in her field - yet doesn't hold that against students while grading. Tests were mostly written questions and 1-2 bonus MC questions - with JUST enough time to answer. There were two 6 page papers, but she gives you plenty of notice in advance.
Very knowledgeable in her field and very kind and considerate. Lectures were engaging and easy to retain. Mostly tests and discussions. Had a single assignment all semester. Be ready to read, she'll have you read the whole book. If you don't buy the book you won't pass.
She's a good prof, but the course is a super heavy load. She would condense a chapter that would take at least 3 hours to read into an hour and 15 minute PowerPoint and we have two lectures a week so get ready to read, read, and read! this results in test questions going deeper than her notes. Would only recommend it if you are a part-time student.
She definitely puts a lot of material on our plate in this class but it is manageable. She requests that we read the textbook, but honestly, I found if you copied her notes and pay attention in class then you don't need to read.
Tests are online, so you have full access to notes, and you will need them. This course would be brutal if not for that - there is SO much material. Prof was great though. Her lectures were always engaging. She pretty much gave a brief overview for a bunch of different psych topics, and then provided a LOT of materials for further reading.
Professor Stinson is nice, but this course has large workload and millions of professional terminologies. It covers a wide range of psychological knowledge. For the final exam, no highlight, no review. If English is not your mother language, I strongly don't recommend you take this as an elective course. Too cruel for international students.
She was a great professor. If you are interested in psychology, it will be great to take it with her. The only problem was heavy workload. A lot of reading, exercises, and tests.
Dr. Stinson was awesome. She was super friendly, encouraged conversations in class, and graded easily. The two downsides were that the tests would be pretty hard if you didn't have a friend or two to do them with, and there was a 10 page mandatory paper worth only 10% of your grade. Other than that she was perfect though, totally recommend.
One of the best professors I have had at SMU. Very engaged in her lectures, will provide all necessary course materials online. Something beyond control happened and our in person class moved to online and she was very accommodating and accessible through this.
Veronica Stinson was an amazing prof and I hope I can take another class with her again! The grading was very straightforward, and so were the assignments and quizzes. She was also great to address questions quickly through email and/or by booking a virtual appointment. Be prepared in this course though, there is A LOT of reading involved!
One of my fav profs at smu. She's so energetic and really interested in what she's teaching. Also checks in with the class every day to see where we're at. Her tests were pretty easy but essay-based, and we hard to write a 15+ page paper. She extended deadlines if we needed, and was very accessible out of class. 10/10 prof
Dr. Stinson is a great prof overall and she clearly cares about teaching. She is very knowledgeable and I got a lot out of her lectures. The exam prep she gives is quite heavy, but you'll do great if you attend class and study consistently.
Veronica is really passionate about the material and offers a lot to her students. She gives a lot but also expects a lot so prepare to work in this course. As long as you put the work in you will do OK, but there are no shortcuts. One big project, midterm, and Final
Professor Stinson is such an amazing professor. She really loves what she is talking about and you can see that. I will say she is a tough professor but if you give it your all you will do good.
The most amazing professor I have had at SMU so far, beyond recommend taking this class. Very easy marks obtained by doing Pearson Revel quizzes for each module of the textbook, more easy marks obtained by in-class activities. Very flexible and caring for her students, clearly passionate of the material and her job. Attend lecture and you're good.
Amazing professor, amazing class (Pseudoscience). Would recommend any of Veronica's classes to anyone. Inspirational teacher, engages with the students, very open to feedback. A kind of class style that I've never seen before, that really encourages students to think. Maybe not a fit if you're looking to simply study and do exams and get a grade.
She is a kind and passionate professor; you can tell she is interested in what she teaches and wants her students to be too. Lectures are textbook-heavy but she goes over important material. Her assignments were manageable and she is an easy grader as long as you put in the effort on your projects. I'm taking another class with her next semester.
Veronica Stinson's PSYC1000 class is a challenging but rewarding experience. The workload is heavy, but her engaging lectures and the option to use resources like Unstuck ai make it manageable. If you're willing to put in the effort, you'll walk away with a solid grasp of psychology.
The second class I've taken with her, and I love her teaching style. The slides were well organized and based on the textbook. The textbook was surprisingly engaging. She divides the grade so nothing carries more than 20% weight. She cares that her students do well and enjoys when they converse with her about the material in/out of class. Love her!
The best professor ever
I LOVED THIS CLASS! I'm in my 3rd year and have never taken so much away from a class. It's so interesting and she is such a good lecturer. Loves when people ask questions and is a sweetheart! There were 3 writing assignments and a midterm, they weren't hard, just took time, but no final exam! And not a hard marker. If you try you will do well!
