A painful subject made much less painful. Good prof.
makes you learn everything on your own!
Very understanding and compassionate as well as skilled in the classroom.

Teaches the material very well. She is very clear and conscise. Good Professor!
Goes out of her way to help students. Answers emails quickly. Speaks fluent english without an accent making her easy to understand. Sometimes talks a little over the head, but no more than any other prof.
Excellent Professor! Very well organized and explains material clearly. Always available to answer questions.
course website is very helpful. always answers student's questions promptly.
Great prof! She is wonderful for students that haven't taken Math in many years. Great for Mature students...lots of patience!
The course is hard, but she walks with you all the way and tries to make is as painless as possible. She explains well and answers questions clearly.
Seems nice, but filled with rage and hate. Stay out of her way.
I used to like her a lot, but that was before she became down right rude and sarcastic. As for her speaking abilities, she may not be foreign, but she has a lisp to end all lisps.
Explains concepts clearly, yes her lisp sometimes makes you have to listen more closely, but she writes very clear exapmles and notes on the board.

Vicki's teaching style (writing the notes on the board as she lectures) is kind of a waste because instead of really getting a lot out of the lectures, you're scribbling down notes all class. The tests were more difficult than the practice tests, but still weren't toooo bad-just make sure you REALLY get counting principles- then you'll be fine
After the attacks on the WTC and Pentagon there was a lot of fear, uncertainty and questions among the student body and most instructors took the time to discuss the issues. Not Vickie though, she was there to lecture about calculus. She put a couple of student contact numbers on the board and then right back into the chain rule.
She takes things slow, and generally goes over time by 2 minutes, but she explains everything very clearly. She writes down all notes on the board, and works through problems in class - pretty effective on the whole. If you pay no attention in class, but take notes, your notes will save you.
Goes slowly which is nice. Tries not to tell somebody that they are wrong, but ends up coming of really sarcastic when that was not her intention. Tests are fair if you do the home work questions and practice exams. Good course for arts/social science students needing to take a math.
very kind, helpful prof. lots of writings and notes, but eventually they'll help you through the exam.
Vicki is a fantastic professor. I have never taken finite math before, but she has made it a breeze! She is very clear and is willing to answer any questions and is normally very accommodating.
Great Prof! Goes at a good pace and is always there to help.
Good prof, goes over the material well and offers extra help sessions
Finite Math Online with her was awesome. Her notes are so comprehensive. May take a while to read, but totally worth it. This course is easy to do well in if you do the work. I bombed calc and aced this.
Content is not too difficult, but teaching style lacks enthusiasm and direction. Class usually feels like we are dragging on without actually learning anything; I accomplish much more with just my textbook.
She was very nice, clear and very helpful. Do all the homework and practise tests and you'll do great!A great alternative to Calc 1301/1501
I took this class online over the summer. Very nice and helpful teacher. She's really good at explaining and answering questions. As long as you do the homework you will do great.
very clear lectures, everything she explains is very easy to understand. Do the practice exams and you will do great
Olds was a very effective math professor. She helped people when they asked for it and she put in many hours of work for online responses and posting solutions for homework problems.
Good teacher. I really appreciated all the effort she put in to posting the class notes onto webct. She seems a bit grumpy, but she knows what she's doing. The exams are extremely fair, just make sure you do practice exams and the homework.
shes awesome my favortie prof
Wants to help you do well but also makes you sweat every ounce in your body to get your marks. She also seems to be a little harsh to some students on webct
She posts really great notes online. Her notes are really clear and ensure that there is no possible way for you not to understand the topic; however, she is really grumpy and is extremely harsh on WebCT if you ask a question.
Took Math 1225 & 1228 with her. Good prof, caring and understanding. She is grumpy time to time but probably because she needs her cigarettes. Overall, very good!!
She was great. Sometimes her classes get boring but she understands and puts up completed notes and overheads online. Her exams are not hard. Just practice exams, and you'll be good
good prof
Great Prof! Very helpful - she answers emails and questions on WebCT quickly. She also posts past exams so you know what kinds of questions will be asked. She provides plenty of opportunities for practice. Also posts her lectures online, which is very nice of her. I would recommend attending class though, easy to understand when she does examples.
MAKES THE COURSE WORTHWHILE
Great professor! Very clear overheads, structured lectures, works through examples and easy tests. She's very to the point and makes a good grade attainable.
took math 1229 & 1225 with her. great overheads and responds to students' questions quickly on WebCT.
Best professor. Her slides are extremely organized and clear, makes references to the textbook, always willing to answer questions, and VERY easy exams. Read the online notes, do all the practice exams, do the homework, and you are guaranteed an over 80. all her class averages were high. HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER.
AMAZING Prof!! Had her twice basically since I had 1225 in the school year but dropped it b/c I couldn't handle my course load and have her now for the summer online course. So clear, direct with what she expects from you, and FRIENDLY! A very nice and accommodating professor who makes math enjoyable!
Dr. Olds may come off a little bit strict at first(especially if you take the online course), but you start to get used it and realize she just wants to help. Very quick responses to emails, with straight forward responses to all questions. This professor is highly recommended.
Vicki was angry and short tempered in class, she would scream facts as she spoke. Despite this she is knowledgeable and comprehendable as a teacher. She is a little fuzzy on theory but just for going to class it is easy to get a 90.
Very good professor. Exams are extremely easy and almost every question type is covered through examples in class. Very willing to help and answer question. Concepts are very simple in this class.
Great prof! When she first introduces herself to the class she can be a bit intimidating but she is actually very nice and very helpful. Her in class examples sometimes go a bit lengthy, but she always covers everything well. She's always available for extra help, and is very accommodating if you miss an online quiz or need to reschedule an exam.
useless
Good teacher, classes are spent taking up homework, gets frustrated with students who fall behind
she makes amazing online notes. in class, she reads off a paper.. i recommend taking this course online. going to class is useless because its basically getting the online notes read to you
Yells at you instead of answering the question. Does everything on chalk board. You miss class, you don't get the notes.
go to prep 101 for this course
Doctor Professor Olds is actually amazing. Perhaps one of the best profs @ Western! Her lectures about permutations are modestly difficult, but as she goes on, the content gets much clearer. I recommend this course to anyone who doesn't want to take calc 1000
Prof Olds, is a shinning example of what a math prof should be, if I had one good prof in university it was her. She will explain it to you 80000000000 times just to get it. She will roll over your fear of math and squish your phobia of not using a calculator. LOVE HER BEST EVER
Doctor Olds, is like that teacher everyone once had who makes an impact on your life. She is probably the one thing I will remember about Western the most (class wise). She is super friendly and easy to talk to anytime anywhere. If you simply show up and do the practice exams you will get 100 in her class. She is simply the best math teacher ever!!
To pass this course you only have to do the weekly homework, online quizzes and study the previous year's exams. Very easy course but she is slightly monotone and slow. There are no lecture notes but the textbook covers concepts well.
Vicki is not very clear when she speaks and I wouldn't say she is a good prof. However, this course is very straight forward and if you are decent at math it can be self taught. I didn't show up to one class after the second midterm and ended with a 93%. Definitely not a very difficult course.
easy course, like data from high school, no tricks on the exams, take prep101 and you will do more than amazing
AMAZING COURSE!!! AMAZING TEACHER!!! Just don't get on her bad side or bring food to class. Other than that, she is great!!!!
she's hard to understand but her notes are great! Overall she does a good job! and goes at a great pace!
By far the BEST math prof I've had all my life. Her notes are lifesaving and will take the time to go over many examples. Responds to emails in a heartbeat and always willing to help and answer questions outside of class. I HIGHLY recommend this prof to people who aren't particularly great/interested in math. Prof Olds made math a lot less painful.
great prof! notes are very clear... always includes lots of examples
she's entertaining.... i fell asleep in class but she's always raise her voice at random times and wake me up. shes a good instructur and gives lots of practice questions - her exams her fairly easy
not the most interesting lectures but she explains everything clearly. lectures are well organized and easy to follow. do all the practice exams and it's easy to get a high 70/low 80
not the most interesting lectures but she explains everything clearly. lectures are well organized and easy to follow. do all the practice exams and it's easy to get a high 70/low 80. overall she's a solid prof for a course that is generally boring
Her lectures are boring but she is a clear teacher who will explain the concepts clearly after class. The lectures are slow and only cover basic concepts and then the homework is much harder and you need to read the solutions in order to answer. The first midterm was rough but once you understand it, the next 2 exams are significantly easier.
Very good professor. Doctor Professor Olds is always in her office for extra help, and she always answers her phone around exam time just in case you have a last minute question. She really is an amazing professor, and cares allot about her students.
Professor Vicki is great! Had her last semester and it was a great class. Just make sure to do all the homework and do the practice questions. Also whatever you do, do not bring food items to her class or unplug her cooling fans. Other than that shes a gem!
Vicki does almost all of her examples on the chalkboard, she only posts her overheads online but those are mostly just definitions that you really don't need to know. For any math course you take (1225/1228/1229) I definitely recommend taking a Prep 101 course as the math teachers don't make any sense.
I got a 56% on the first midterm because I always attended lectures and often fell asleep in them because of how boring they were. When I started to skip lectures to read off the online notes that she recites in class anyways, my grade improved and shot up into the 90's.
TAKE PREP 101
Vicki Olds is a brilliant professor who knows her subjects and explains them better than the textbook. Had her for both 1225 and 1228. My fondest memory of the classes is her random emphasis of certain words or phrases - she was savage in responding to a couple questions I raised my hand to ask, assuming I should've known the answer. Love her!
She is so nice, i really like her class.
Math1229 is not a course you need to attend (or even take prep for) to pass. I attended probably 25% of lectures with Olds and it wasn't worth it. She taught alright but would sometimes get too passionate for the concept to make sense. It doesn't matter which prof you choose cause you probably won't go to class.
Isn't the nicest person but explains relatively clearly and is open for questions during and after class. Very easy course.
Dr. Vicki is a hoot. Hands down the best university professor that I've ever had. She's such a nice person and really cares about her students. Her notes are very good and she always cracks jokes in class to make sure everyone is paying attention. You are the best Dr. Olds, truly one of a kind!
Very nice prof. Lectures may be a little boring but she explains my questions clearly every time I go to her office hour. I went to every lecture even thou people said it's unnecessary with the online notes Maths is just about practicing. But take 1229 if you want an easy A. Profs don't matter or 1229 lol
Very nice professor. Always written down everything on the board that makes the course easier.
Math 1229A is very easy. Go to lectures, write down what she says and use it in the homework. If you don't go, you won't pass (like my friend). She practically tells you exactly everything you need to know for exams. Overall, not a hard class and if you need a Category C credit, highly suggest it. PS class can be VERY boring
she has best interest at heart, but one time she spent the whole lecture talking about just one example. in class, i feel like im just taking notes rather than learning. i learned better by teaching myself the stuff from the online notes.
Litterally the most boring lectures . Dont enjoy going to this class whatsoever. Can teach yourself everything if you are decent at math, or have experience in data.
doesn't know how to teach
She is clear when she speaks, I find it very easy to understand concepts if you just listen. She also writes examples on the board which is very helpful.
Vicki Olds is an extremely nice Prof, but the course she teaches 1228 does not make any sense whatsoever. if you take this class with Vicki i strongly recommend you attend class she will keep you entertained for the full 50 minutes.
Dr. Professor Vicki Olds (or Vicki as she prefers to be called in class) is an awesome professor. She's the best professor I've had at Western. She's great at teaching and really cares about her students. Although I can't understand every second word she says, Vicki is an amazing professor and her knowledge can literally bend space and time. Thanks
She is a terrible professor, but give easy marks
She asks people to ask questions but gets angry when they do. She is the best prof for 1228, 1229, and 1225 but that does not mean that she is anything spectacular. It just means that she is the only one who speaks fluent English. Her notes are very good and thorough though and you should be able to get anywhere from 80 to 100 with minimal effort.
does not explain things clearly
The class wasn't hard but I'm just not a fan of her teaching style.
WOULD NOT RECOMMEND PROF OLDS! I took her for math 1229 (online summer) and she couldn't even be polite over email! I can't imagine what she's like in person - I've seen a video of her falling asleep while "helping" students! Yikes!
Vicki is rude and does not treat students with respect.
this professor was so incredibly rude, on multiple occasions students left the room because she responded to their question with an attack. She did not wait for people to understand she just turned away from the class and wrote on the board for the entire 50 minutes. The class could have been easy to understand if I had someone that could teach it.
The prof is really rude. The videos posted up on OWL aren't even of her lectures and weren't recent as they were online videos from a previous curriculum. Everything from the material to just using OWL in general is confusing as a first year student but she seems to lack understanding of those circumstances.
The course material isn't difficult, given the online videos (which involve a different prof, she's not teaching). However, she is extremely rude and belittling when asked questions about course material or online schooling.
She gives you a textbook, exercises, and the exercise answers. When you don't learn just by reading and doing the exercises, life is difficult. Her teaching style just didn't work for me
so rude, if you need help don't go to her. has so much sass, emailed about an issues and all i got back was a rude response, even tho it was my fault i got heavily blammed
Provided w 2 tests and 6 quizzes then a 40% exam!! Most terrible prof. A, the tests are proctored which is ridiculous when we're already stuck learning online in a pandemic!! B, tests are multiple choice so we can't show our work and C, The tests are ridiculously hard cuz they don't even match class content. If u have Olds, GL, ur going to fail.
As a first year university student, this class makes me rethink why I am studying here at Western. Worst proff ever, so rude, doesn't help, terrible at teaching, I just need this credit for my program but don't even know now if I will receive it because of how hard I am finding this course. Would not recommend taking her classes ever.
Quite tough and strict
I dont care how knowledgeable she is, she is disrespectful and sassy. This isnt just my experience, the rest of the reviews all say the same thing. Its the truth. Take classes from any other prof in the math department at this wonderful university
The class content itself was not hard. Pretty easy A. But this professor was fairly rude to students. I contacted her when OWL did not let me submit a quiz despite completing it a few minutes before the due time. She did not care and gave no other options to fix the grade, despite it being an OWL error.
Possesses no empathy or remorse, 2 key qualities people look for in a professor. She may be intelligent and teach an easy course; however, all of that is easily irrelevant when she doesnt care about her students or well being. Western prides itself on its caring nature, and this prof totally abolishes it
This course was online this year, the only one teaching me was my TA. The TA prepared weekly pre-made videos to explain the textbook content which was great! Reaching the prof was difficult as she barely responds, but when she does, it can be sort of rude where you are afraid to ask any more questions. After that, I emailed my TA and only my TA.
Professor Olds does not provide lecture videos, only pdfs that are quite long and sometimes confusing. However, you are given access to videos of other math profs. She can come off quite rude when you email her so be prepared. Luckily, the course content is quite easy and if you do the practice exams, you'll be perfectly fine.
Although the concepts taught within this class were very easy to understand, I found the teaching method of providing written notes to be very confusing and ineffective.
I had Prof. Olds for math 1229. The course is very easy to do well in regardless of the prof. But I found her to be an extremely unhelpful instructor. She only posted PDFs and put minimal effort into teaching. Content aside, she was rude and incredibly unprofessional. She repeatedly mocked students questions on the forum and would not help.
She isn't the greatest prof. She doesn't make videos but instead provides lecture notes from 2016. She answers emails quickly thought so that's good I guess... Since it's online, you can access any profs content so it was fine. The course itself is easy. You should still do the homework because it will only make it easier.
difficult test with curve down
I did not learn one thing from her. She posts PDFs of the textbook, that's it. no lectures, nothing. The only way I got past this course was because I had access to Prof O'Hara's video lectures (he is a gem). but Olds puts no effort in, all she does is make hard tests. She also is a bit rude on email. I don't know how the school lets her be so lazy
Awful prof who like everyone said, is very sassy and rude in her emails. The tests are 15x harder than any of the practice ones. This was supposed to me my easy course but it acc made me want to die. She got progressively worse over the year from 1229 to 1225 and so did the tests. cant even put into words how bad she is i would rate a 0 if i could
The course content and the past exams for this course weren't too bad. However, her course notes were difficult to read, but since the other profs posted their videos, her notes weren't necessary to pass the course. I will say her exams were significantly harder and longer than the past exams, especially the final which seemed to go on forever.
Doctor Professor Vicki Olds, Rest in Peace. Once I heard the news of her passing I felt obligated to rate her. She has changed my life. Her passion for her students far exceeded the pay. Committed to her teaching and she loved to be personable to each student. The world mourns her and I hope her spirit of teaching will be pass along. RIP.
Dr. Victoria Olds, you could call her Vicki, was one of the best profs at Western. She really cared about her students and always tried to make this made up math class fun. She literally made up this math class so people didn't have to take Calc 1000. RIP Vicki, you will be missed. It clearly takes 40 profs to replace Vicki teaching this alone.
