Good mathematician, but reminds me of the soup nazi on Seinfield (in the math sense);a total control freak, during a 2hr class no sharpening your pencil, no restroom break unless she deems them necessary. Notebook is graded on a all or no credit scale.
She is very tough and very demanding and extremely honest(she will tell you how it is); but she knows math very well and is willing to help you understand the material to the best of her ability.
real life ****

Very Particular, demands perfection.
She is EXTREMELY tough and she thinks she's the greatest math mind of all time. But she is very nice and will help you with any problems if you ask her for help
SHE IS HORRIBLE!I DISLIKED THIS CLASS!IT'S HER WAY OR THE HIGHWAY.SHE SEES BLACK AND WHITE.SHE THINKS SHE'S THE SMARTEST WOMAN IN THE WORLD.DID ANYONE ELSE NOTICE THAT SHE WEARS THE SAME THING FOR MULTIPLE DAYS?!
avoid her like ****
I had a premature baby and a c-section in the middle of the quarter that made me miss two weeks, even with a doctor's note saying I shouldn't be in school yet, I got a 0 for missed assignments and couldn't make them up.
thinks she is the ruler of the math world, can't convince her of anything, would take points off my paper if i didn't show her 2+2=4 i used to enjoy math a lot until i had her as a teacher, i cringe now everytime i think about having to take math again

She moves way to fast. She doen't slow down enough to let the students catch up. She gets upset with her students when they don't understand the problems the first time. She is never around when you need help too!!
very condesending and disrespectful. You have to have it her way or no way. She takes off points for every little thing regardless if you answered correctly. Very much recommend not taking her.
Lair's teaching style is thorough. She is very particular when it comes to evaluating problems (i.e. proper notations and solving technique). Review your Algebra and Trig, since Calculus based on these principles. Use the Mathlab for help. She will help you, but you must ask.
Probably the worst teacher i've ever had. Her overall attitude is very unpleasant, which makes for a very long quarter. She's overly demanding and any problem MUST be solved her way- any other method is completely out the window. I wouldn't recommend her to anyone. She's horrible.
not a good experience
I hated her more than I've ever hated anyone. She would grade off on homework if I didn't add a , in between the steps! She is very rude and if you get her, you might as well drop out now!

She is very particular when it comes to grading, but if you show up to class and make an effort, she's not as bad as people claim to be. Don't be lazy in a higher math course!
She marks off for everything. She is a nice lady, but I wouldn't take her again. It's not an easy class.
Liar is very meticulous with the mathematical syntax. She moves fast, but will slow down for students. She assigns about 70-100 problems a week for notebook due before tests. Attempting them gives you full credit (plus they're odd). She gives five homework problems a week. Her class is hard.
Mrs. Lair was a very good instructor, and both extremely helpful and clear in her teachings. She also has a relatively good sense of humor - and would take another class by her; though she can give out lots of homework...but it made me a better student!
she is a teacher that makes math harder than what it has to be
Not impressed with the "holier than thou" mentality. Quoting her sums it up with "When you get the masters degree then you can do the problem the way you see fit."
good teacher, but there is a lot of homework.
LEARN the material to pass her class. Procrastinators/Bad attendance people will fail. Roughly half my class failed. The material is hard; you just have to be harder. Lair has pop-up quizzes (so if you miss class, there goes your grade) and BRUTAL exams. Two hours a day of studying should get you by. This class is truly a test for anyone.
If you pass her class, you definally know the material at the end. Prepare to work in this class. Favorite quote of hers that made me laugh, *while assigning homework* "This should keep you out of trouble this weekend" *evil laugh
Lair's tests are very difficult, and you get a lot of time-consuming homework. Her grading is very strict; any missing notation or unclear steps will be punished with points taken off, even if you get the correct answer. She is willing to meet with students and help them, but be prepared to put a lot of effort into the class.

Mrs. Lair is very organized and precise in her lectures. She cares very much about her students and will do almost anything to help them pass, while maintaining her high standards.
GREAT Teacher, alot of homework but it makes you learn it. Can explain different ways so student understands. Is helpful and understanding as long as respectful. Wants her students to pass and get A's. Helped a student that wasn't in her class. She cares.
On several occasions, I had to stop by her office for help, and she gladly helped me. She even called me later one night because she couldn't answer one of questions right away. She'll make sure you know your math and can apply it.
AWESOME professor !!! She's very organized, and percise with her lectures. Gives a TON of homework but it helps you learn the subject better. She's a tough grader (don't leave out any notation or steps... not even small ones), but it just makes you that much better at math :) If you really want to LEARN the class you're taking, then take her.
I took Lair for Calc 2 and 3. She is NOT an easy teacher, but you will know the material when you're through. I highly recommend her. The lectures are clear and precise, and she will always stop to help. She is an extremely tough grader, but I think its fair. If you want to understand calculus, take her, but be prepared to work.
This was the worst teacher I ever had. I would never take this teacher again. The way she graded was horrible and the way she taught the material was also horrible. By the end of the quarter over 3/4 of the class had dropped. Does that tell you anything?
It's a really hard course, and she is a VERY tough grader. You have to make sure that you have your equal signs in the right place and everything or she'll take off. But if you disagree with her grading, she'll listen to your case and sometimes change the grade, so she's pretty fair! REALLY nice lady; very willing to do what she can to help you.
Bad personality, annoying anti-abortion propaganda, hyper-strict grading, tons of people drop.
I was terrified of taking this class because I suck at Math. If you are willing to work on it, Ms Lair will work with you. She really is one of the best math teachers that I have EVER had. She is kinda weird though...but it's a funny weird.
Awesome teacher, scrumptious eye candy!! Hard worker til the very end.
If you're serious about learning and understanding the material, this is a great teacher. She's very patient and never makes you feel stupid for asking ANY question. Always thorough with her answers. She explains the material so it is easy to understand. A lot of homework , but its necessary if you want to do well. Good sense of humor.
the worst teacher i ever had
Great for masochists!
If you can't remember absoulutely everything you have ever learned in math...don't take her. She is the hardest math teacher I've every had, and I'm majoring in math. She expects a little too much. She doesn't except anything late-nothing. and she relies on your book to help you more than her notes.
She's really strange and i thought i was going to get a D or fail, but i ended up with a B. She's pretty tough but she's fair too and will help you understand the material. Recommended if you want a challenge.
She is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. She is a tough grader, but it is for my own good. I would take her again in a heartbeat. She explains the material really well.
terrible, she is like a dictator that beats her own people
Grading is what will get you in this class. Shes takes off for the most ridicilous things that do not make sense. Her lectures are clear and she will stop to help you, but the test are insane and do not resemble the problems and you will fail just because you diagrams are not neat enough
This is the worst teacher I have ever had. I will never take a class with her again.
I thought she was overall a great teacher. SHe was very strict at grading but she gave great extra credit opportunities when needed. If you want to learn the material i suggest her!
Do NOT recommend this instructor!! Extremely tough grading. Clas started w/30 people ended up with 10 - Not sure how many of those recieved a "C" or better? Very low passing rate...
Do not sign up for any of her classes even if you can't get into any other math class. Her tests are made up of the most difficult homework problems. She will take off points for the stupidest things...You will regret taking her class. Over half of my class has dropped!
She was the 1st Math Professor I had ever taken that made me feel as if the subject was incomprehensible and that any attempt I would need to make towards proving that would be feeble. The tests did not match the material we reviewed and she spent far too much time lecturing on material that did not have any relevance...I dropped the class.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had. She acts like it is an iconvenience when someone asks a question. All she worries about is sticking to her schedule. I took her class even after reading the other comments. I thought others were exaggerating. They are not. Avoid her class by all means possible.
Spends way too much time writing definitions on the board. Incredibly harsh grader. You have to review material before it's lectured to understand during class. At least she does have a good sense of humor...
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! I busted my butt and still didn't do well. She's very into herself and does not really care about her students more than she does 'going swimming.' She likes things according to her schedule and treats us like crap. NOT HELPFUL OR CONSIDERATE! Listen to everyone and DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! [or you'll regret it].
Take anyone else!
Be prepaired to WORK. She will teach but you must WORK.
under no circumstances should you take her class
The worst teacher i ever had,AVOID HER CLASS!!
Talks very quickly and tends to leave students trying to take notes behind. Also very condescending and arrogant if you don't know the material. Asking about something often wound up with her telling people to go to the math lab on their own time and look it up. Unevenly strict grading based on her mood, and a general lack of care if we passed.
Vickie is the worst professor I have ever had. I dont like Sinclair to begin with and taking her class, needless to say, gave a bad lasting impression. She flies through the notes, her tests are impossible, and she gives loads of HW. There were 30 people in my class to start and 6 were left after the drop date...that says something. AVOID HER!
This is my 1st quarter @ sinclair & so far Mrs. Lair is my worst professor to date. She gives PAGES of homework every night & there is no way to get a decent grade on them.I have done 8 pages of work & have had them come back 2.5 out of 10 total points. If the problems arent done in her "perfect" way, then it is wrong, even if the answer is correct
Vickie Lair is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She lectures very clearly, grades a lot of homework, and is VERY fair and honest in all she does. Someday, I would like to be a teacher just like her.
Vickie Lair is an excellent teacher. She is the best one I have had here at Sinclair so far. She is a tough grader, but very fair. I would recommend her to anyone.
Mrs. Lair is a very good teacher. She is always willing to help when asked. She might have a bad reputation with people who are not willing to work and who like to blame the teacher for everything, but she really is an awesome teacher. She is one of my favorite teachers. I like a challenge. I really learned a lot of math from her.
Mrs. Lair is a very nice lady who teaches very well. I worked very hard in her class and it paid off. She explains things very clearly and is always ready to answer your questions if you ask. Vickie Lair will make sure that you learn the material. I highly recommend her.
Mrs. Lair is an excellent teacher. She explained Calculus very well and taught us how to read the book. I loved her! She is very fair and works really hard to help you learn the material. I would take her as a teacher again any day.
Mrs. Lair was not nearly as bad a teacher as some students have told me. I really learned a lot from her. If you study hard, you will get a good grade. Most of all, you WILL know the material after having her as a teacher. I am SURE that I will be successful in my next class after having had her.
Mrs. Lair is a very good teacher. Some students told me not to take her because she grades harshly. I didn't find that at all. I did very well in the class because I studied hard and was rewarded for my efforts. You WILL learn mathematics from Mrs. Lair. I am sure that in my next class I will have a "heads up" on the other students.
Terrible
Ms. Lair is a wonderful teacher. Yes, she is very picky about how she grades, but she tells you from the beginning exactly how she is going to grade things. You can really tell she absolutely loves math and hopes to give all her students the best math knowledge that she can. Study hard, do your work, you will be fine in her class.
Not helpful at all
Not a good professor at all. Very tough grader, and takes off points even if you have the right answer. Seems like she knows the material but does not do a very good job of teaching it.
I think Ms. Lair is a great teacher. I have noticed that the people in my class that do not like her, are lazy. They don't put the time and effort needed to lear math. She takes the time to explain everything if you do not understand. You just have to ask for help to get it. Great teacher that gets a bad rap.
hard teacher, hated the class
She does not create and atmosphere that really lets the students learn the materiel. Instead what happens is the students memorizes how to work everything and then forget how to do it because they are way to stressed about how she grades. There is nothing wrong with high standards but when they get in the way of learn there is something wrong.
Mrs. Lair is a great teacher and she has a wonderful sense of humor. She does grade harshly, but she explains what she expects from you from day one. This class moves very fast so you really do have to spend the 2+ hours outside of class studying. If you study and do your homework and ASK for help, you'll do just fine.
Absolutely God awful. If I have to hear "We're Americans; we hate fractions" one more time, I'm going to lose it. I'm also curious as to why she wasn't voted "Hot".
This class is incredibly hard b/c she grades homework and tests so particular. You can get the right answer and still get half credit. If you make math your life for the entire quarter you can squeeze by with an B.
Grades way to harshly. Takes off points for stupid things. She is very nice, but I would definetly not recommend her
The class is really hard.
she was a very hard teacher and grader in the past. this is my second time taking a class with her and this time she has eased up a bit compared to what she used to be. taking a class with her is definitely challenging and u should not take her if your not ready to work... as long as you stick with it you will pass and she helps you if u go see her
Absolutely a nightmare. I had to drop the class because I wasn't sure if I would pass. She grades hmwk extremely harsh as well as tests. The odds are against you. I took the class the following qtr and got an A, no problem. She also is not understanding or respectful of student's lives. Pretty much felt like high school all over again!
Stay away whatever you do. She takes points off for the craziest things. If you are looking to get a for sure A or B then do not take her. Not a lot of homework, but her grading will make you lose points left and right.
As much as I would like to warn future students about this teacher's teaching skills,I was taught if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all.
As much as I would like to warn future students about this teacher's teaching skills,I was taught if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all. We only used the text book for home work
You can tell she is a nice lady but is very weird. She does take points off for stupid stuff. Class is so boring I can only think of plans to get out of it during class. Also she will never let you out early and constantly holds you over to finish a problem and wont let you leave till it is finished
She is GREAT! I loved her. She is always very helpful and explains things extremely clearly.
She spends more time telling you what you didn't learn, then teaching. She is happy to go back and cover the useless stuff that we already know, or to hint at the higher level she is supposed to be teaching, but all intermediate supporting info, you better know it... or your out in the cold.
Be prepared to cram a lot of information into a short period of time. Be vigilant with your homework and pay attention to the way she writes out the answers to example questions on the board. I recommend writing everything down and taking time to absorb it later!
Vickie Lair is incredibly condescending to her students. She spends more time making sure you feel stupid and afraid to ask questions than helping you learn. A professor should reflect on their methods when every single person in class fails a test. Avoid this professor.
This instructor is not interested in the success of her students. If you have her class just ask her. She will tell you. I asked if she was affected by the % of pass fail students and she said no. "My main focus is getting through the material on time...". Those were her words. Half way through the cours more than have the class had dropped.
I'm not here to whine, or with sour grapes about Mrs. Lair. She is a teacher that has quite a bit of knowledge in her subject (Math 116). She has a lot to offer but fails in the delivery of it. She has a rep of being hard on her students. Her grading style is very different and she does give a logical/valid reason for it..BUT, it could be refined.
Knowledgeable. Unique grading methods. Work must meet very high standards. Correct answers must have proper work to receive full credit. Sometimes condescending, but humorously. Good lectures, but banal. Ensures preparedness for calculus. Reviews exam material. Must work diligently to receive A. Math nerds will get an A. Recommended with caution.
She is very hard proffessor. She takes off points in every little thing. Be careful with her.
OMG...This teacher is a hard grader. She will take off if simple math, that you can do in your head, is not written down properly. She overexplains material to the point where it's just confusing. Oh yea and don't forget to leave your cell phone in class before you use the restroom or Pop Quiz!
Always unclear as to what you should study for tests, which made them very difficult at times.
try to stay away from this professor. rarely prepared for class. will often not lecture for a section, gives a handout covering section instead. Gives pop quizzes if a phone rings, does not give enough time for tests.she gave a test that contained a problem that she was unable to solve. gives preferential treatment to students she appears to like
She takes off points for simple arithmetic. On our last test she made us memorize ten problems that were all fairly similar. She did so because she thinks we should compete with her calculus class. She rarely teaches from the actual book and instead teaches from her own notes which are not available unless you copy them.
She was a hard grader but she always explained what was deficient clearly. The homework was not extremely long, except on a few instances. She had trouble with a new book this quarter, but she graded us less harshly where she knew we would have troubles. Her lecture often differed from the book, but her lectures were in-depth and explanatory.
She was not a helpful professor. She always had to derive an equation and prove it. Her method of grading was awful. At the end of the course she had to drop 8 of the lowest homework grades because the entire class was doing so poorly.
Very hard teacher. I get straight A's in my previous math courses in college but could not learn from her. VERY picky. Should have dropped earlier to get a refund but I decided to stick it out. Dropped just before first test as I knew she couldn't teach me. Only concerned with getting through material, not how well she covers or explains it.
God Awful teacher! DO NOT TAKE THIS INSTRUCTOR: She does not explain anything well, You are better off reading the book yourself, then even going to lecture. I'm pissed I even payed for this quality of education, it would not be worth my time if it was free.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! she made things so much harder then they needed to be. She makes you show work for every tiny detail (simple adding and subtracting) I didn't listen to a review I read and took the course, listen to this one and DONT!
NEVER TAKE HER! thanks God she's not teaching next semester because I have to retake her class. Makes students feel stupid which immediately drops my interest in the class, very hard grader (to a ridiculous point) and gets confused in her own words, which confused everyone because we don't even know how to approach the problem. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE
I went over a homework problem with this woman. We went over it twice and she told me everything was correct. I turned it in and when I got it back, I got 4/5 points for that same problem. That how she grades. I strongly recommend you not take any of her classes.
Mrs. Lair turned out to be a great teacher. She seems scary but DO NOT be afraid to ask her questions. Her homework is tough but will help you in the long run if you plan on going any further with math. She was more than willing to meet with me outside of class.
She grades way to hard, taking points off for a misplaced negative sign even if the answer is right. I asked her for help pulling my grade up and she said "you're smart you'll figure it out". She gets confused and when asked a question just repeats how she explained it before until they give up and say they get it. DO NOT TAKE HER.
She has to be the WORST teacher I have EVER had!! I got a problem wrong on my hw simply because I didnt put a dash in my z, so she argued that it was a 2! I would have problems correct, but still have no points for the problems because of fact she requires you document EVERY SINGLE STEP even the minor ones! DONT TAKE HER CLASS!!!
Horrible. She was no help and gets confused as she writes on the board.
Vickie Lair is THE WORST teacher I have ever had. I would not be in her class if it wasn't the only opening left (wonder why?) She's confusing, forgetful, and very unreasonable when it comes to class. She doesn't post grades EVER. "It's your responsibility." Her reviews for tests are barely that and she crams everything together. Don't take her!!!
I think one of the pitfalls reviewers of Lair fell into was not going to see her or staying a few minutes after class to ask questions. She looked scary & set tough rules, but when talked to, she relaxed many of the rules & was very helpful. Her class is par for the course, its math & requires work out side of class to pass, o look for it.
Mrs. Lair is the best math teacher I have ever had. She is VERY organized with her lecture notes and explains things very clearly. She is willing to help whenever a student asks a question. However, you must be prepared for the class. If you don't know the prerequisite material for the course, you are in big trouble. Be responsible!
I definitely would not recommend taking her class. She is a nice woman but not the best teacher. She teaches the easy things pretty well but when it comes to the confusing stuff, she speeds right through it. She gives out way too much homework (online and worksheets) and doesn't accept any excuses. She is also very stingy about grading.
This lady is crazy! I took her for calc 3 expecting it to be not as bad and boy was I wrong! She makes no efforts to make sure her students succeed, hammers everyone on grading, and her tests are impossible. Not to mention the racist rant she went on in the middle of my class. She can explain it well but other than that she's awful. Stay away!
I took Mrs. Lair around 3 years ago. I am now taking differential equations, the highest level math class at my college. I was inclined to come back and write this review because of how much Mrs. Lair screwed me over. I understand all of the concepts I'm learning now but she did such a bad job teaching calc 2 and it's causing me to fail. She sucks.
