Great, great lecturer! He is extremely knowledgeable, one of the best history professors.
He is a great lecturer, though he can move through the matierial fairly fast, and is a difficult grader. he presents complex issues clearly, and you'll learn.
Prof. Lieberman is an interesting and insightful lecturer, and can explain complicated concepts in an understandable way. I learned a lot from this class. The exams are challenging but written fairly.
GREAT lecturer! The class is VERY interesting, I would not pass it up! I loved it. However, this is a class that I think you have to go to lecture...maybe even with your computer because there is a lot of info and he talks really fast. He knows his stuff though and I learned a lot!
An excellent professor. Has splendid lectures that cannot be missed. Never throws his personal views on the students--extremely objective. A true historian.
A great, smart, understanding guy. Any class with him is bound to be a winner.
This class was WELL WORTH the effort. You definitely have to attend lecture, but it's not painful to sit through at all! He is VERY good at answering questions and giving an objective lecture not intruded upon by his own personal views. I would HIGHLY recommend this course!
BEST PROFESSOR EVER PERIOD!
he's one of the best history professors in the department. Smart but not arrogant, always willing to listen to your thoughts and comments, always delivers an interesting and thought provoking lecture.
He was a real good lecturer and was very clear with everything.
The best professor I've had in my first two semesters at UM. Very good lectures keep me awake and interested.
Very good lecturer, he gets tons of info in. A little tough on grading, but the exams are well written, no surprizes.
Lieberman is possibly the best lecturer in the department. He knows everything there is to know and this class was awesome. Take something with him.
Excellent professor. Very smart and clear in his explanations. He is always willing to take questions from his students. Exams were not that difficult, but were graded quite hard.
This guy was excellent. I took his class 20 years ago and remember it fondly. Great lecturer. Helpful after class. Good sense of humor. I still laugh uproariously at his King Mongkut (Thailand) story every now and then. Definitely take his class.
This guy knows his stuff. He is impossible to stump, and can answer any question you would ever want to know about Southeast Asia. He seems intimidating but if you go to talk to him, he's very helpful. I learned a ton! Only complaint is the tests are ridiculous! Expect to have to know ALOT of info!
An excellent speaker and the most knowledgable and organized professor I've met yet at the university. Take his class if you don't mind learning everything there is to know about SE Asia and can deal with taking 1 1/2 hrs of straight notes. If only discussion was as good as the lecture...
What an amazing lecturer. One of my first classes here at U of M, but I am extremely impressed. He is able to convey his thoughts very clearly and each lecture is very organized, and intriguing. I knew absolutely nothing about Southeast Asian history previously, but I feel very knowledgable now..definitley take this class!!!!
hard class, don't choose kerry as your gsi, she'll rock you.
This is a very hard class. I'm a history major and i stuggled. Professor Lieberman is very complex and my GSI, Kerry L. was little help. Section left me very confused and I received little help. Not a huge fan.
I thought that I would drop this class, but after listening to a couple of his lectures I became very interested. He is an excellent prof, and he really knows the material. If you take good notes and attend every lecture, there is no need to do the reading. He covers everything in lecture reguardless of your GSI. Go to lecture and you're fine.
Fantastic professor, knows the topic very well, and his lectures cover everything. If you are interested definitely take it. He is a little old school with just a midterm and final, but they aren't too hard. Incredible lectures, really nice and helpful outside of class
I can not say enough good things about this man. He was by the far the best lecturer I had at the university. It was the only time I was disappointed to skip a 10am lecture. Take ANY of his classes and there is no way that you'll regret it.
Incredible professor. Very dense, detailed, informative and interesting lectures. Extremely helpful outside of class, always willing to answer questions and assist you with anything. Good textbooks for the course, even. Oozes historical knowledge. Take this class, you won't be disappointed.
Incredible professor. Extremely articulate and knowledgeable. Lectures like he was born to it and can answer any question.
probably my favorite lecture. he knows just about everything there is to know and was so helpful outside of class. this was the only class i never felt sleepy in
Take any class with him, you'll love it. Excellent lecturer, helpful, extremely knowledgeable. Serious about his subject, serious about teaching. Did I mention that he's at the top of his field? Fantastic professor.
He is an amazing lecturer. This was the first and only class that I never once thought about skipping. He really knows what he is talking about and can easily control the interest of his students.
great
This is what a college class should be. His lectures are engaging and well-structured. He's definitely the best prof I've had so far. My suggestion is to bring a laptop and type your notes. He talks quickly, and everything he says is important. Take this class.
Come prepared to take notes till your hand falls off. He talks a mile a minute...I'd always leave this class exhausted (but much smarter). Really tough course.
Good lecturer and an interesting topic. However, grading is too hard for a 200 level class. Prof Lieberman can be helpful, but can carry a "holier than thou" attitude. Expect to learn a lot, but no one is going to hold your hand. GSI was abysmal: unresponsive, arrogant, ignorant.
Great Professor overall! His class covers A LOT of information, but very, very interesting! If you take good notes and pay good attention during lecture, you will do fine. He is extremely knowledgeable and very nice and helpful. He really loves input from students and enjoys that his students enjoy his class. Overall GREAT!!
Best class and professor yet. Very informative and interesting lectures. Never fails to show detail. Guest speaker brought a lot of insight on class. Take a class with Lieberman as your professor. You will not regret it!
This is the BEST class I have ever taken - I only took it to fill my Race and Ethnicity requirement and I absolutely loved it. I plan on trying to fit another one of his classes in before I graduate and may minor in Asian Studies because of his infectious enthusiasm.
Prof Liberman really knows his stuff, and really knows how to keep his lectures interesting. He talks super fast, so at times it was hard to take notes. He covers A LOT of material, so make sure to go to class. Overall, a great course. I had a very limited knowledge about the Arab-Israeli conflict but I feel quite knowledgeable now. TAKE THIS CLASS
Arab-Israeli Conflict. Excellent Professor, really nice guy. Does a great job with the topic.
I've taken a few of Professor Lieberman's classes and he is such a great professor, probably one of the best professors in the history department and at the university. It would be worth it to take any of his classes. Even if you think you may not be interested in the subject matter, you will leave being so much more interested.
GREAT PROFESSOR!!!! GO TO OFFICE HOURS, HE IS THE SWEETEST PROF. HE WILL HELP YOU WITH ANY OF YOUR CONCERNS!!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Great professor and the best lecturer I have ever had. Take any class he is teaching. He's the real deal.
The BEST professor I've ever had! Extremely knowledgeable and helpful, gives interesting lectures. I wasn't that interested before I started the class, but now it's my favorite! Absolutely amazing professor.
Professor Lieberman is by far the best lecturer I've had at Michigan thus far. He is so passionate about what he does and it definitely shows. I highly recommend taking any class of his. Lecture is essentially mandatory if you want to do well. Bring your computer and get ready to take notes.
Amazing Professor!!! Extremely Helpful, I highly recommend his class
Love him. I look forward to going to lecture every time. They are interesting and clear and for the first time, I am actually interested in history. TAKE THIS CLASS even if you are not yet interested in Arab-Israeli relations...b/c you will be by the end!
Absolutely love him. He is an incredible professor and authority on this topic. His lectures were engaging and crystal clear. TAKE THIS CLASS if you have have any interest at all or if you want to fulfill R&E, it's sooo worth it.
This class was AWESOME. I was forced into the class after a scheduling mishap and ended up loving it!! So informative, crystal clear, great for people who know nothing about the Middle East to experts. Lieberman is wonderful, always willing to help students, very passionate about his topic, gets to know you if you go to office hours. loved it!
I am usually good at history classes, but this one was challenging for me. Prof gives IMMENSE amounts of information in lecture and does nothing to make it digestible, so it was difficult to keep up with notes. I wish the class had been more structured so less focus was on cramming facts and more on examining concepts. Wouldnt take him again.
Absolutely brilliant amazing professor. He makes you interested and is completely not biased, gives both sides to the argument. However, MUST go to lecture as he doesn't put up notes. The final and midterm are basically your grade so it ends up being pretty hard but definitely worth it. Adorable man
Absolutely wonderful! Very knowledgable and extremely kind. Talks very fast and it is difficult to keep up with typing even! He doesn't have any PowerPoint slides but he just has a few notes with him. He covers a lot every period so you definitely need to attend class. You should make a timeline so you can keep up with what is covered in class.
I had Professor Lieberman for my first class my first semester at U of M and haven't found a more engaging professor yet. Be prepared to work for your grade, but if you come and take really good notes you won't have to do all the readings (I learned the most from lectures). I knew nothing coming into the class and now I'm an expert!
Best Arab Israeli conflict class I can imagine taking. Does a great job of concealing any personal bias he may have and is clearly passionate about the region and its history. It is VERY crucial that you come to lecture. I got an A without reading any of the books or handouts, but went to class religiously and took 100+ pages of notes.
Prof Lieberman was awesome. Grades are mostly based on a few things, but graded easy. You have to go to lectures, but reading not necessary. He is a smart guy and a great speaker. TAKE THIS CLASS! You will regret it if you don't.
BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD!
Prof. Lieberman was a nice person & he presented the material in a balanced way, but his grasp of the material was VERY disappointing. He made many, unacceptable factual mistakes that any knowledgeable undergrad would recognize. He should not be teaching a Middle Eastern history class as he is way out of his league.
Phenomenal lecturer. Very dense lectures, but everything is important. Takes a non-partisan position on a very controversial and heated issue. DEFINITELY take this if you're the least bit interested. He is brilliant.
Great class and interesting to listen to. He talks somewhat fast so computer is recommended for notes. The exams were somewhat difficult and the reading is only mandatory if you are striving for an A. The exams are 2 blue books and they are difficult.
Professor Lieberman's class is one of the best I have ever had the pleasure of taking at Michigan. He is an excellent lecturer and manages to keep students engaged for the full class. He does cover a lot of material, but that is simply a testament to how intelligent and knowledgable he is. I wish I had taken more classes with him!
This guy is the smartest professor i've ever had and am taking another history class just bc he's teaching it. I didnt do AS well as i would've liked, but that's because i wasn't fully prepared for the final. You MUST go to lecture, but you do NOT need to do the reading. Just study ur butt off for the midterm and final. he's the best TEACHER!
I had Professor Lieberman my first semester at U of M, and I don't have enough good things to say about him. Not only is he incredibly smart, ( try to stump him with a question - nearly impossible) but he truly cares that you understand the material and takes time during office hours and lectures to truly answer your questions.
Prof Lieberman was absolutely amazing. His lectures were engaging and clear. The reading material was heavy, but supplemented class content very well. He was fun to talk to during office hours. I will take another class from him before I graduate!
one of the best classes at UM. midterm & final are bluebook.not hard if you went to class and took good notes. reading not necessary at all. if you read his book prior to each lecture it helps a lot (only a few pages).very happy to have taken the course, learned a lot, and as one user already said, not enough good things to say about Prof Lieberman
Prof Lieberman knows absolutely everything about the Arab-Zionist conflict and he's so sweet! This class was extremely informative, though grades are tough (entirely made up of section (25%), midterm (25%) and the final (50%)). The readings weren't mandatory but GO TO LECTURE and be ready to type (the class covers a TON of material!)
Professor L. is amazing and I definitely recommend taking this class. I learned so much about and he is such a nice professor. Definitely go to office hours- he's genuinely interested in meeting students. Exams aren't hard if you study. Go to lecture and read the book Prof. L wrote and you will be fine.
Speaks incredibly quickly, but he's very thorough, unbiased, and knowledgable about the topic. He tells the entire 100+ year story in-depth with remarkable ease. He leads you on so you want to know what happens next. Plus he has an entertaining dry sense of humor.
Fantastic professor. If you have any interest in the Arab-Israeli conflict, take Lieberman's class. He knows the topic like the back of his hand. Expect to do a lot of note taking during lectures. Grade depends almost entirely on relationship with your GSI.
Professor Lieberman is by far the best professor I've had at UofM. He is so knowledgeable! Lectures are presented in a very logical manner, so that you walk away from class and everything just completely makes sense, without having to do much of the reading. Southeast Asian History with him was amazing--highly recommended!
Fantastic Prof. Not necessary to go to lecture because he essentially just reiterated the book but you will want to go to class because of how engaging he is. Explains things very well but moves a bit fast at times. I gained a great deal of insight after taking this course.
My favorite professor, he explains the class very thoroughly. If you approach him and ask questions he will be more than happy to answer, very genuine and an amazing instructor, I highly recommend his class.
Amazing, intelligent, and engaging professor! Not knowing anything before I took the class, I have learned and retained SO much! Lectures is all writing notes, and even though it's sometimes hard to keep up, it is easy to absorb and understand what he is saying. No assignments-just one midterm and final. HIGHLY recommend. Great teacher.
My absolute favorite class! Professor Lieberman is a great lecturer and he made the whole conflict make sense. I learned so much and loved going to lecture- it's easier to learn the material that way than from the textbook. Not everyone did the readings but they're interesting. Take this class!
I absolutely loved the subject and the lectures. Lieberman is an incredible speaker, even if he's just covering his own text book.He is extremely interesting to talk to and is passionate about the subject matter. He's also very funny at times. There's a reason this man wins so many teaching awards. Take this class!
An amazing professor! One of the only classes that I can say I know understand what is going on after I am done with this class. No need to read the textbook, since he wrote it. Lectures are great, worth going to. although, no attendance is taken.
Prof Lieberman is legitimately one of those professors that makes me feel so incredibly thankful I attend Umich. He is brilliant and engaging, and he honestly gives the material in a way that is (for the most part) entirely unbiased and forthright. If you have any interest at all in taking Arab/Israeli Conflict, DO IT -- you won't regret it!
Prof. Lieberman is literally the most interesting man to listen to (although he sometimes speaks quickly and without ppt). He was fantastic at telling the Arab-Israeli perspective from all sides, and I feel so much more informed on the conflict from taking this class. If you're even considering taking the class, DO IT!!
Prof Lieberman is my favorite prof at UM thus far. His doesnt use ppt, but outlines every lecture before class & theyre very structured & he makes every point so clear. He knows the subject so well & is the most engaging lecturer Ive had. I feel so much more informed & confident participating in conversations about the Arab-Israeli conflict. LOVE
Very good and usually interesting professor. When lecturing he would stay very close to the order of the book (which he wrote) so he was very easy to follow and easy to go back and check facts.
Vic is one of the best people you'll find at UM and a wonderful professor and scholar as well. Thought his lectures had a pro-Israeli slant, but historical narratives almost always favor the hegemonic group. If you can think critically on your own, you shouldn't worry much about bias. He lectures with authority, eloquence, and crystal clarity.
He's a very engaging lecturer that is, in my opinion, very good at presenting each side in a fair light, without necessarily making excuses for either. Fantastic at distilling a wide-ranging and messy topic into clear lectures. Expectations for exams are clear.
Wow, just wow. Incredible lecturer.
Victor is an amazing professor. He is so smart and knowledgable. I love him.
Great professor. Learned a lot. Reasonable expectations. Straight-forward exam. Attendance not mandatory, but go to class. Seriously. And don't buy the [expensive] books--at least, not if you actually go to class and take notes. But take this class!
hail to the Victor. he's the man. this class has a lot of information to study ( it is a history class) but would definitely recommend to take.
he is literally the cutest old man you will ever meet, like a cool grandpa. i teared up at the last lecture thats how great he is. I loved his class and he's really passionate about the topic. TAKE THIS CLASS BEFORE YOU GRADUATE!
If you don't go to lecture in this class, you will probably fail. Lieberman is probably one of the most intelligent people I've ever met. He doesn't use powerpoint, so you really have to pay attention when he talks. The lectures weren't that relatable, but he's still a good prof overall.
Holy cow was this class the best. It is a MUST before you graduate U of M. Lieberman is a really bright guy, and he can fire off facts about the Arab-Israeli conflict off the top of his head at will. He really challenges you to get involved with the topic and stay engaged, even if you don't have to read the books (read the articles, though).
Interesting class but lectures are rapid fire and the class grade is made up of two massive tests
I've said it before and I'll say it again, best professor there is. He knows it all and won't take any excuses but still the nicest guy. Hope to see him in grad school. God bless you Mr. Lieberman.
Seriously a great experience. I never knew history could be so interesting. The readings are very helpful but not necessary, I'd do them for the bigger topics and I reviewed with his book before tests. Go to every lecture and take detailed notes, look them over every day the week before the test, and you should be fine. LIEBERMAN IS THE MAN!
prof l is AMAZING. he is so incredibly caring about his students and will go above and beyond to help you - even if that means writing you a recommendation when you were just a name in his section, he'll get to know you!! he wants to see you do well and wants you to develop a passion for the class the way he has. seriously so interesting TAKE IT!
Professor Lieberman is easily the most esteemed professor at this University. He is remarkably knowledgeable and well-versed in his discipline, and provides a factual and objective recount of the Israeli conflict. I strongly urge all those interested in Israel, or the Middle East, to take his course.
Amazing class and Professor. Take 244! Even if you know nothing about the arab-israeli conflict, you will learn so much from the class. His lectures are directly from the book he wrote, so if you go to lecture you don't have to read and vice versa. Midterm and Final and optional paper (don't write it). Great prof- not biased at ALL about conflict.
Literally the best professor in Michigan. He loves his students and if you go to office hours he will be happy to discuss whatever topic you want.
Great professor, not biased! grade really depends on GSI, but professor Lieberman genuinely cares about each student and will take the time to get to know you by name and discuss the course or even unrelated topics with you. Take advantage of his office hours! He is so intelligent and has so much to offer.
10/10 Would recommend.
I really learned a lot in this course. Very interesting. Also quite a challenge if you are a math/science person. But definitely worth it
I'm not a history person at all but took this class based on previous reviews. It was not an easy class, but was by far the most interesting class I took freshman year. If you go to class and take good notes the exams are very doable. Professor Lieberman is someone you should definitely take a class with, professors like him do not come around often
Hated this class. Lieberman reads directly from the textbook he wrote himself for lectures. Grading expectations were not clear. If you like regurgitating information this is the class for you, if you like to think outside the box and want a bigger picture on the Arab-Israeli conflict, look elsewhere. Worst class of college.
History 244 (Arab-Israeli) is the single best class I have taken at Michigan. Lieberman is a remarkable professor. If you are interested in the Middle East or the Arab-Israeli conflict, this class is a must.
Best Class at Michigan
The best lecturer I have ever heard. I absolutely recommend this class even if you are not that interested in history.
i have taken two classes with this man and he is hands down the best professor I have had in the past four years here. He is so passionate about his subject and his lectures are super engaging. The class is relatively easy as long as you study, his book is a direct outline of his lectures. seriously, take this class!!!! you will end up loving it
He is the BEST professor I've ever had!!!!! Amazing lectures, so clear, cares so much about the topic. Only a midterm and a final that actually assess the material you learn in class, and the books refer exactly to his lectures so you can always review. All in all the most inspirational professor I've had here.
Lieberman is easily the best professor I've had at UM. Your hand will hurt terribly after lecture from writing so much (that is if you still handwrite like I do), but every class is extremely informative and interesting. Exams are easy as long as you study a bit. Lieberman has a pretty great dry sense of humor too, which is always fun.
although victor lieberman is a great author, all his lectures consist of are him speaking. no use of visual aids. simply speaking. extremely hard to focus.
VL. THE LEGEND. Prof L facilitates engaging discussion and never cold calls. He is one of most helpful and committed teachers that I've ever had. He understands students have different interestsacademic abilities and respects all of his students. He returns papers back very quickly and gives pages of comments. Lecture is what you make of it.
This was definitely a tough class. I didnt know anything about the subject before hand and i found the class to be a competition amongst people like myself and tons of students who knew everything about the subject. Your grade relies solely on your GSI. Interesting class, he is a brilliant professor.
Slick Vic is the day one homie. He's very knowledgeable in his field and he presents the material in an engaging way. You will take lots of notes, and you shouldn't skip class. Reading can be heavy, but do it or else you'll struggle. Incredible class if you're interested in the topic. Best way to learn more about this issue. You will be educated.
It says a lot when your professor gets a minute long ovation after the last class. Brilliant guy, easily the most intelligent prof I've had at michigan; he knows EVERYTHING. Class isn't that easy though and exams require memorization of his arguments, but you'll become an expert on the conflict. Not what you learned in Hebrew school, not a blowoff.
Lectures are jam packed with information, and try to keep up, because it supplements the readings well. He is truly an amazing lecturer, and his knowledge is boundless. Tests require lots of memorization, and crunch a lot of writing in a small time frame.
Interesting, but very difficult. It's not worth it. I worked incredibly hard only to get an A-.
Professor Lieberman is one of the best professors I have had at U of M. He is honest and caring, and handles a very controversial topic with more grace than most people could find. I would take this class again, and may just sit in on his lectures next year.
Detailed and intense but well worth it. An objective view of the conflict delivered primarily with facts but also delivering the narrative of each side. This is not to say you will come out thinking both sides are equally culpable for the conflict but you will come out educated in what's what and have historical basis for the positions you take.
I took this class when I already knew too much about Arab-Israeli conflict. I skipped most of the readings because I didn't have time. However, I never skipped his lectures. One of the best lecturers I have ever seen. He is very knowledgeable about the subject + can answer any question you ask. Beware, could be a tough one if you have no prior info
This class was amazing. Everyone should take this class. It is so interesting and you will learn so much from Professor Lieberman. The class is so thought-provoking and just genuinely interesting. Going to class was not mandatory but I always wanted to go because his lectures were so great. Exams were easy as long as you studied notes or the book.
This has been one of my favorite courses. Lieberman is incredibly smart and presents all of the information in a clear, understandable way. The class is challenging but compelling. 2 big tests and 1 optional paper. You will be typing throughout the entire lecture but he presents the material in a narrative that is easy to understand.
He's an awesome guy. Probably loved History because of him during freshman year. Just talk to him and learn as many things as you can.
I can hardly put into words how incredible Professor Lieberman and this class are. I look forward to it every Tuesday and Thursday. He is probably the most intelligent person I've met and he pours knowledge into every person who walks into his class. If you have even one semester left at Umich, TAKE THIS CLASS! It is unbelievably amazing.
If you're used to discussion-type classes with small enrollment, do not take this class. Professor Lieberman is extremely smart and well informed, but his lecture style will get old and boring really quickly if you prefer discussion and engagement with the professor. It's not that hard to get a good grade in the class, but going to class is tough.
Truly an amazing lecturer; approaches the Arab-Israeli conflict from both sides with fairness and clear and compelling narratives. Gives an enormous amount of information in every lecture and clearly weaves it into the history of the conflict as a whole. I'd recommend this course to anyone interested at all in history. Plain and simple, a legend.
One of the best classes you will ever take. He manages to be very fair and neutral, despite the fact that the Arab-Israel conflict is so complicated and emotionally-driven. He is very open to talking to students, and is known for taking some Muslim and Jewish students out to coffee and lunch. Truly an incredible class.
Professor Lieberman is incredibly intelligent. If you take this class, I recommend typing your notes. He moves quickly and gives tons of information. Attendance is not taken, but I went to every single lecture. If you go to each class, you don't really need the textbooks. I didn't use mine and I did well. TAKE THIS CLASS. You'll learn so much.
YOU DON'T NEED PRIOR INFO TO THE CONFLICT TO TAKE THIS CLASS! Don't be discouraged; I had no clue what Hamas or the Gaza Strip was(which is kinda sad). I just went to every lecture, typed really good notes, and studied hard for the midterm and final and got an A. I HIGHLY recommend the class. It kind of can depend on your GSI though.
The lectures can be tiring. Not because they are boring or because Lieberman isnt interesting, you just are taking pages of notes per lecture. I got an A+ in this course and i never did the reading. key to success is to take good notes and utilize the study guides given before the exams. Lieberman is hands down the best prof at U of M in my opinion
Really depends on your GSI, I had a great experience. Textbooks aren't totally necessary, I skimmed the readings and read what I was interested in. Most of the grade is just the final and midterm. If you go to the lectures and take notes, you'll be absolutely fine, and he's a good lecturer so doing so is not a chore.
Lieberman is a phenomenal prof and gives so much information - you're going to be taken note the entire lecture, but you learn a lot. As long as you go to lecture you'll do fine, you don't need to do the reading (he even cut it down). Only issue - lecture is huge and little discussion. If you like small lectures/classes this may not be for you.
Lieberman is an amazing professor! This was the best class I have taken at U-M. I always looked forward to going to lecture, and was impressed by Lieberman's ability to always provide all sides of the narrative with such a controversial topic. He is very responsive to email, and is always willing to answer any questions on that students have.
Lieberman was a good lecturer. He would was aware if he was going too fast and allowed us to use laptops for notes. He would also stop to let us ask questions. He's easy to understand. If you're taking this class DO NOT BUY THE BOOKS. My GSI never talked about them and he kept telling us they were optional. Interesting and informative class!
Take any class Lieberman teaches. He is a kind man with genuine interest in what he teaches. The Arab-Israeli Conflict is not something it's easy to master, but when he teaches it, it's easy to understand and interesting. Lecture is not technically mandatory, but I'd go and listen to his genius. Loved this class.
Absolutely phenomenal teacher and an incredible course. His inspiration really got me interested in the conflict and has made me passionate about the subject. A great guy with so much information, it's phenomenal. He talks fast but try to listen instead of being obsessed with taking specific notes. Must take
So as long as you get the notes, lectures aren't mandatory. They're really great though! You can get by without the readings as long as you pay attention in section. You're graded on two exams and participation in your section so study up on the terms he gives you. He holds open office hours every week which is nice if you're confused at all.
Lieberman is a great professor. Lectures can be filled with a ton of information. He manages to present both sides very fairly.
As long as you are willing to show up and pay attention in lecture, Victor Lieberman is one of the best professors at Michigan. He teaches about an extremely controversial topic and does so objectively and fairly, and despite having a background on the Israeli-Arab conflict going into the class, I learned so much from him.
Lieberman is awesome. That said, this class is the exact opposite of an easy A. Lectures cover a ton, discussion has no correlation. You don't have to read but you've gotta attend lecture. You'll be taking notes all class and your grade hinges on midterm, final, and section discussion (plus an optional ten-page essay). Be careful with expectations.
Lieberman is the best teacher I have had while at Michigan. I knew virtually nothing about the Arab-Israeli Conflict going in and now feel well-versed on it. He is incredibly genuine and nice, and I thought his lectures were fascinating and inspirational. I didn't do most of the readings but got a good grade. Great, great guy.
Dr. Lieberman works diligently to present a narrative of the conflict that is more historical than argumentative. Class discussions and the material allow for value-based, critical thinking, but historical recall was stressed more heavily on exams. I highly recommend the class for all students. Grading distributions are available on gradeguide.
Professor Lieberman is one of the best professors I've had. His lectures are clear, concise, and extremely informative. He is very kind and always will respond to emails or meet you outside of class. The exams and workload are very reasonable.
Profesor Lieberman is definitely the best Profesor at the University of Michigan. He is an inspiration and teaches an extremely controversial topic in a very fair way. He is a must take. That said his class is in no way "easy". You have to put in the work and there is a bunch of content. No surprises on midterm and final which contain terms/essays
One of my favorite profs I've had at Michigan. A truly nice and friendly man who is phenomenal at what he does. His lectures were incredible and his knowledge on the conflict is mind-boggling (He wrote his own textbook). Does a nice job of staying middle of the road and presenting both sides. Highly recommend taking this class with him.
Immensely knowledgeable about the topic of the class and very kind, Prof. Lieberman's course is almost a rite of passage at the university. Your grade is essentially two exams (entirely writing) but the material is always clear. Still, this is not an easy A and lectures are straight up you getting talked at for 80 minutes. Take with some caution.
Arab-Israeli conflict w Lieberman was the best class I've ever taken in my entire life. He speeds through material but keeps it SO engaging and easy to understand. He is as unbiased as possible and describes each side of the conflict in great detail. I'm obsessed with him and this class FOREVER. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH LIEBERMAN!!!! BEST DECISION EVER
Very great lecturer. Highly recommend
Prof. Lieberman is very respectable, wise on the subject, and approachable. He presents a fact-based unbiased portrait of the conflict. He tries to know your name if you tell him it, and he is always available for questions both during and after class.
Victor Lieberman is a gem! He gives amazing lectures and often goes on funny and educational tangents. He is always available to meet outside class and just discuss or talk to you about your fears in the class or the optional term paper. I highly recommend taking him even if you've had no prior exposure to the subject. For being 73, he's friendly!!
This class was super interesting and perhaps the most I've learned from a class at Michigan. Professor Lieberman is very good at explaining all sides of a complicated conflict clearly. He doesn't use slides, so you have to go to the lectures and you will be taking notes the whole time, but worth it. Very exam heavy but clear what you need to know.
Likable personality, conveys the material in a well-organized and interesting way, and there aren't too many demands other than 2 tests and some discussion section tasks. The reading is not mandatory, since everything you need to know is covered in lecture, but I did most of it anyway. Exams are 3 short answer and 1 essay, but offer some selection.
Professor Lieberman was my favorite teacher at U-M. He is a very knowledgable, respected, patient, and thorough educator. He cares deeply for his students and their education on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. For example, he stays after class until all questions have been answered. He's careful to portray both sides of the conflict. Great man.
Professor Lieberman is an absolute gem! He is a great storyteller and even though his lectures mostly consisted of him talking and a few photo slides, he was a joy to listen to. He does talk pretty fast but he is always willing to clarify or repeat himself if someone asks. Tests were super fair with what they expected from you.
Lieberman is a wealth of knowledge. He adores questions from students. The online format was not ideal for someone of his age, but the GSI was helpful. He is so informed about everything he talked about. I wasn't super interested in the topic at the beginning of the semester, but he made it easier to understand.
Great class! He does an amazing job of being neutral (which is quite rare at U of M). Loved the material too!
Great teacher! Very interesting lectures.
Lieberman was a good online prof, he was a bit more pro-Israel but willingly admitted it which was helpful. Your GSI will make or break the class, but Lieberman obviously cared, was super accessible outside of class, and very passionate about the subject which was helpful! Class was really interesting overall
Professor Lieberman is absolutely amazing. He gives an extremely objective view of the conflict, which is quite impressive, particularly for controversial subjects. If you have Arielle as a GSI, you are in for a treat. She complimented Lieberman's lecturing style incredibly well, which made for a well rounded, multidimensional class.
Professor Lieberman is easily the best professor Ive had so far at U-M. His knowledge of the topic is endless and his lectures are very easily digestible. If you retain every thing he says in class, at the end of the year you will have a PHD level understanding of the topic. 10/10 would take again.
Dr. Lieberman is amazing! He is incredibly knowledgeable and you can tell he is passionate about teaching. He loves answering questions and is always happy to provide clarification on whatever you need. Exams are worth a lot, but they are straightforward and fairly graded. Lectures can be dense, but they are always fascinating. I highly reccommend!
Though not the most tech-savvy man alive (his worst enemies are projectors and duopush), he is the most informed, brilliant, and caring professor at umich. He will bend over backward to help you and further your interests. He changed the way I looked at history. Ask him about the formation of popular sovereignty and definitely go to office hours
Lieberman is simply a GOAT. He is a walking encyclopedia, but most importantly, he's a phenomenal teacher. While at U of M, you must a take a course with him, you will learn a ton. He is at the very top of what this University offers. A legend
I felt as though I learned so much about the topic just from the very first lecture. Lieberman is very good at explaining things, but it is mainly just him talking for an hour and a half with no informational slides which can be difficult to learn from. Lieberman was very good at not making it one-sided and was generally an easy A.
EXTREMELY biased. Deliberately leaves out info and is very intentional with his word choice to push a pro-Israel narrative. Attempts to present the Palestinian narrative on occasion, but does so with an annoyed tone and goes out of his way to debunk it. Palestinians have dropped the class because they were so upset and traumatized by his teaching
For teaching such a controversial topic, I believe Lieberman navigates it quite well. For given topics, he always expresses the two narratives, and he always emphasizes the emotion behind it. In this, he sometimes uses harsh language and examples that may be seen as "biased," but he does this both ways in a Pro-Israeli and Pro-Palestinian manner.
An amazing and very informative class - very well taught to represent both sides. Taking notes can be tough in lectures since he doesn't use slides and just speaks. But lectures are recorded so can go back/get missed material if needed. Exams are essay/identifications. Easy if you pay attention. Readings aren't necessary if take notes on lectures.
Lieberman was a great professor. Super knowledgeable and truly wants students to learn.
Professor Lieberman is hands down one of the best professors at Michigan. His class is informative, fact based, and he is open to being questioned about both the Israeli and Palestinian viewpoint. 100% would recommend this class to anyone and hope to encounter more professors as knowledgable and approachable as he is.
Professor Lieberman teaches a course on Israel and Palestine, by the end of the class I almost laughed that he was the one who taught it. He is HEAVILY biased towards Israel and presents his opinion like it is fact. Yea, he is knowledgable when you question him but he doesn't present the Palestinian side clearly and leaves out important details
Prof Lieberman only talks in his lectures (no slides) but they are still way more engaging than other profs. He's really well known and wants to talk about the material outside of class! I'd only watch out for his thinking to be a bit Eurocentric at times, but as long as you're not taking all the material at face value you'll learn a lot.
Professor Lieberman is probably one of my favorite professors I have had so far. I'm taking his class on the Arab-Israeli conflict and he explains both sides perspectives with each sides bias, then lays out the indisputable facts of what occurred with no bias. He is extremely knowledgeable on the topic. He is a very fast talker though.
Never knew someone reading from pre-written scripts can be so engaging... The lectures were phenomenal. I had only a basic understanding coming in so this course was very comprehensive and educational. Q&A during lectures were delightful and I regret not going to his OH to talk with him more often.
Lieberman is one of the best professors at Michigan. He truly attempts to present the conflict in an impartial manner, and his lectures are incredibly engaging. In response to the preponderance of reviews claiming that Lieberman doesn't treat the Palestinian perspective with fairness, he dedicates sizable parts of every lecture to review both sides
I was incredibly impressed with his ability to present the conflict in a very impartial manner. Sure he has a bias, but so does everyone. At the end of the day, he doesn't let it impact how he teaches or treats his students. the lectures can be a bit dull but they are all recorded so you can watch them at x2 speed if you want. Also, very easy class
Amazing professor and one of the best on campus! He gives fascinating lectures, is always available during office hours to talk about the material, and helps you with developing essay topics and finding research for the essays. I also took a grad school-level class with him in addition to History 244 and my writing/research skills improved so much!
Very biased delivery of the Israel-Palestine issue. Downplays or omits a lot of israeli attrocities, and overemphasizes arab attrocities. Not very neutral. Claimed the Qana Massacre was "an accident." Which it was not, even according to the UN. Good class but be cautious of his rhetoric.
Professor Lieberman is one of the best professors here who gives out amazing lectures. He's always willing to offer specific instructions on your paper and always open to talk about the course materials. He helped me a lot during my first semester here and gave me a lot of encouragement. Definitely a great class to take.
Professor Lieberman is a great guy, explains things extremely well and will let you know everything you know to succeed in his 244. The only issue I had with this class was the lectures are extremely boring and he just reads from the readings. The final and midterm make up 75% of your grade, but you can write a paper that will replace 12% of that.
Professor Lieberman was great! He presented the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the current situation clearly and from multiple perspectives. 75% of the grade is based on two exams, but I found them to be quite straightforward. Would recommend taking this class for the R/E requirement or just to learn more about the topic!
Professor Lieberman gave great lectures and helped explain everything very well. As long as you do the readings, you will get a good grade.
Professor Lieberman's lectures are captivating, breaking down the Israel-Palestine conflict objectively. While the pace is quick, attending class and using tools like unstuckstudy help excel. The readings may be skippable, but the exams require thorough preparation.
