Dr. Macias is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo completely hot... Total ****. Worldly, chauvenistic, intelligent, and very well-dressed. Totally changed my attitude toward history....

**** guy who just talks about how ****s have been treated throughout history. Goes on a lot of tangents. Boring. Tons of reading.

very interesting, very pompous very ****, definitely an experience! not too easy, but very interesting

very interesting, flamboyant, homosexual. Makes history exciting if you pay attention, semi-difficult. good course to start college off with
Thinks he is part of the elite, kinda funny. Learning Mexican History from a **** Mexican from Texas, interesting idea. Class was ok for people interested in topic. He has issues with being darker Mexican, says it means you're lower class in Mexico.
Great teacher. Knows the subjects he is teaching. He is a hard ass the first day, but you don't have to read or do the journals like he says, trust me.
The most intelligent person I have ever met. He is passionate about his studies and really wants you to do your best. Keep an open line of communication with him and you're in like flynn.
Horrible in every aspect!
He is a WONDERFUL professor! I hate history, and i took this as a may term class, so I had 4 hours of this guy 4 days a week, and although history can be boring, he is SO intelligent and easygoing that I enjoyed every minute of it. Highly reccommeded.
terrible, extremely left wing liberal, very narrow minded. if you believe the bible you'll have a problem with him.

Will either love this course, or hate it. Probably not in the middle. Fantastic lecturer, really knows how to relate things. Knows exactly what he is talking about. Really enjoyed his class.

He is very opinionated and can be extremely rude. If you don't go into it knowing what you believe you could be misled.
Definitely don't take if you are a Christian! It was impossible to get an A. He is VERY rude. Thinks he is the best professor to ever live. He should be fired!!!
Bashes every aspect of christianity, very opiniated and rude, he is intelligent but he knows it and makes sure you know it. He is always saying we have parents who are bad tax payers and is always talking about people being stupid.
I thought he was a really good teacher, he was hard but he was cool
Dr. Macias is a great professor. He is challenging but makes the students learn a lot. I have never heard him bash religion, and for those of you who think so maybe you should respect his view for once.
Very opinionated, did not like how he always bashed things other people believe in, religions, etc. Way too opinionated and very harsh grader, expects way too much for a freshman gen. ed course.
Is a cultural historian who teaches "People's History" rather than "State History"... meaning you don't just learn about dead white guys. Pretty demanding, yet very interesting course and guy.
Demanding, intimidating, snobbish. Excellent professor, is a scholar and wants his students to be scholars. Won't settle for mediocrity. One of the best profs here or anywhere. Brings out the best in motivated students.
All i know is he's very hard, ****, and his classes are NOT fun!
Gonzalez is alright, class some days gets pretty boring but he does know what hes talking about. I think if you are religious you should take this class and understand the new perspective he imposes! overall not bad...kinda snobbish
I took him over J-term and we had to do tons of readings and write papers and read one novel and do a report on it, however, it was not that difficult. We were let go early every day and he went to the library with us to help with our research.
I do NOT recommend Victor M. to anyone. He knows his material, but shows heavy bias towards certain groups. In addition, he made me re-write my group's entire 10 page term paper in 24 hours, since I was the only one in my group who "knew how to wri
In any History class in general Macias seems difficult but if you talk to him about your questions or problems he is very willing to help.
I took Macias for summer session and although there was quite a bit of work, he gives you all the info to help your papers and projects. He will give out good grades as long as you get your work done, but beware he is very grammatically correct!
Although the class was a lot of work, I learned a ton. He really knows his stuff. Victor can be brash sometimes, and he likes to intimidate the students. He likes the f-bomb too much. Overall, good class though.
very nice guy that doesn't put up with any bullsh**. doesn't mind swearing. gets his point across. comes across as intimidating at fist, but once you get to know him, he's great. no in class tests. very cute.
The 1st day of class when you receive his syllabus, you may be intimidated. Over 1/2 the class drops by semester. The class is not that hard. He is really picky but if you do what he says and go talk to him, he'll help you. He gave me a 2nd chance at a mid term paper.Class always entertaining to.
He is a hard teacher but his class is really easy. All take home exams and the project at the end is rough but suck it up and you'll be fine. The daily journals you don't have to do, he doesn't collect them anyways. Tests are not on lectures so don't bother going to class. I would take him again
I really like this class... Although on my first day he scared me and i was thinking this is was going to be a long year. Although i can not speak for others i have gtten to know my professor and i have taken the time to go and talk to him and i have to gotten to know him. I would reconmmend him!
He knows his material. If you show up, pay attention, and do your work then you'll do fine. He makes you earn your grade. If you want to learn, take him. If you want to get an easy A, take someone else.
Very knowledgable, but very boring. Make sure you know how to write a 10 page paper according to his standards, our group had to redo ours.
Victor is a pretty cool guy. Intimidating at first, but he is harmless. In class lectures can be hard to follow at times because he jumps around with his material. Midterm was kind of hard, and I was hectic with it, but it was my own fault. Engaging with students.
Victor is a very interesting guy. One day he did not even show up for class and he seemed to always be changing deadlines for papers. Class was a little disorganized and we did nothing for the first three months of the semester but did a lot of writing in the last couple of weeks. A fair grader.
Didn't give enough time to write mid-term and final exam papers. The journals are a lot of work.
This was a tuff class.. but i worked hard and i got a good grade. He is a hard teacher but he knows his stuff. If u want to learn something take him, but if your in it for a Easy A dont even think about sitting thru his class. I would reconmmend him to anyone who wants to learn a thing or two.
Horrible; BEYOND critical of spelling, grammer,e tc.
What an absolutely worthless class and professor. He's an unlikeable jerk who thinks he knows everything. Avoid him if at all possible.
He is the worst worst worst teacher I have ever had. He assigns readings that are never used in class. He is not even a teacher. He thinks that he is God's gift to the world.

Just because he demands a lot, doesn't mean he's a BAD professor, that means he's GOOD. He's smarter than any of you piles of crap who rated him poorly. College is for learning, what do you expect?? Yes, he's hard, that's HOW you learn things!! I didn't get a great grade, but I still loved the class
Victor is intimidating at first. Challenges his students to their potential and if you work hard and reach your potential, he'll respect you. He's very knowledgeable and a published author. Grades fairly hard but if you work hard and put in effort youll be rewarded. Victor rocks :)
A very very good professor. This is not a sleeper class, you actually learn something. I suggest taking his clas because you will get your money's worth.
Amazing professor. He challenges his students to reach beyond themselves, and to aspire to a level of excellence that they didn't think possible. Those with a negative review are either lazy or don't have the skills required of an academician. One of the two best profs I have known.
The most interesting history class I have ever taken. Victor does a great job of making things interesting. You won't fall asleep in this class. It is challanging, but with hard work an A can be achieved. I'd recomend that everyone take this class. You learn a lot and he is a cool guy too even though he comes off as intimidating at first.
he's funny, does not beat around the bush on controversial topics, helps me see things better. he's kinda cute too!
teachers like Victor are the exact reason why UW-L sucks. I am an A student across the board and I got a C in his worthless class. There is zero useful info and he is a total jerk about grading.
After first day had to quit, one absence policy crazily strict! Have had a few conjoined classes with him, which he ruined. An overeducated windbag with too much to say about too many unimportant things. Has too high opinion of himself and needs to come down to reality. We all don't live and breathe history and he needs to understand that.
It's the class, not the teacher, and outside of class he actually seems like a real cool guy
a****-TON of work but actually a learning experience.....a little difficult since school has been more into cop-outs lately than teaching NOT A CLASS THAT YOU CAN SKIP
This is not an easy course, and I think he demands a little too much for a 100 class. But he does push you, and requires you to learn things and prove that you have learned them. But he criticizes students outloud in class, which is very unprofessional. Some of the things he says are offensive, but overall he's not.. that.. bad.
The class was the exact same as the Western Civ class I took in HS. Little new information was presented, and his grading is far too harsh for a 100 level class. Big disapointment for a class, but V is an ok prof, just tough.
His sexuality is suspect! A little intimidating at first, and sometimes belittling. However, with hard work and attendence you can get an A. Don't let him scare you with the "If your an A student expect a C in my class," Talk.
Don't skip his 101 class unless you clear it with him first, and get the notes from someone. Overall, a good guy. He really pushes you to do harder, a lot of it is for show & mostly a scare tactic. You get what you put into the class. Don't expect it to be an easy 100 level class, you hae to work. His upper level class are WAY more laid back.
H.A.R.D. doesn't realize that most of these kids are taking HIS 101 for a Gen Ed course. Expects everyone to love history and look forward to learning aobut it. Way toooooo strict and expects too much.
Expect to spend at least 4 hours per night studying. He demands a little much for a gen ed class, if your not going to major in history, don't even bother with this class it will just stress you out.
its intense but fun
Macias is HARD HARD HARD. Don't take him unless you are extremely into history. If you must take HIS101 dont take it with him because the work load for his class is about 10 times that of other professors. LOTS of reading, im talking well over 100 pgs a week, lots of essays, killer midterm and final, group term paper project. dont do it to urself!
He can be intimidating at first, but don't let that scare you. You really don't have to read anything because he covers it all in lectures, which you must attend. Be prepared to take a lot of notes, but they come in very handy for the midterm and final. He's not a bad guy, he's a good professor. It takes a while to get used to him, stay with it!
He likes to scare Freshman, and at first I was really stressed about the workload. I figured out after a while that skimming the chapters is plenty, you can read the ones you need when you do the midterm and final, which you have a week or so to work on. Attendance is a big deal, but the lectures are pretty interesting.
He seems awful at first, but he just tries to be intimidating. I'm glad I had him for history rather than other profs for the main reason that we didn't have tests. It seems like other HIS101 classes had a lot of tests, so if you'd rather write essays than take tests, get Macias. The essays really aren't even that bad - scary at first but doable!
Macias' class sure was intimidating at first, but it is a really enjoyable class once the semester gets going. The final was extremely easy and there were only 3 essays. Take Macias because you learn a lot in his class!!
If you're taking this class and only this class and enjoy english I would suggest this professor. He can be fun and towards the end of the semester the class is more laid back, but all you do is write. I didn't really learn anything other than I am a horrible writer.
He is intense, and while the class can seem a little over the top at times, he is interesting. Good readings (if too long) but ok. I wish he was not such a hard ass. But stick with it. I took another class with him, and he pushes you, but you learn and do well. Improved my writing.
Macias is a pretty good guy once you get to know him. He will scare, and intimidate you for a long time however, he's really not that scary. You NEED to go to his class and you will be fine. There are not tests in the class just a midterm paper, final paper, and a group term paper. You will learn a lot about history from an interesting perspective.
Hard..but just pay attention in class, skim the readings and just follow the basic grammar rules. nothing fancy. and he doesn't need the filler. Just straight up facts, and you'll do fine. He will make you a better writer :)
Don't be intimidated by the hard-a$$ demeanor he puts on at the beginning: he's really a great guy. If you put the effort forth, you're guaranteed to learn a lot, as Macias knows his stuff. I thought he was a terrific prof.
his history101 is not a 100 level class.
more of an english teacher than anything. lots of readings but you dont really need to do them. major points earned are from essays. if u dont like tests but love essays take this class. go to the writing lab and proof-read. take TONS of daily notes that you will never remember. isnt the best, isnt the worse class.
No, for our class he did not collect the journal...thank god, because i think i did about 3 entries. Good luck. I did well in the class. He is very opinionated but if you can put up with the crap, you will be fine.
Some of his intructions are confusing. He is very opinionated, too opinionated. Take notes, if you can follow his drawings and notes on the board.
Way too much reading
Macias is tough, and if you don't like history, don't take him. I didn't really learn much, and I took a lot of notes that I didn't really know what to do with. The 2 exams are almost your whole grade, and they're really confusing esays. He let us redo them though, and gave lots of ex. credit opportunities. You also have a semster group project.
for a gen ed this class was way to much work. he patronizes students calling them all "freshman" he is so picky about grammar that when u take ur paper to the english writing center they say "oh we've heard about him, be VERY careful". the readings are pointless & lectures are more about his personal opinions. & if u are religious-he will offend u.
this is one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken. tons of reading but I think his lectures are more important. He has you do a group semester project which sucks and his midterms and exams are difficult to do because they are so general but he is alway looking for something specific. However, its hard to hate him. He can be really funny.
This is a very difficult class with way too much reading. he isnt very clear on what he wants. assigned readings of things that were on the midterm paper AFTER we took the midterm. Very picky about writing.
I think Mr. Macias is the greatest lecture and teacher I have ever had in my life. He assigns a lot of work but I have learned a lot thanks to him. I would take him again if I could. I would recommend him for incoming freshman! He was very helpful to me!
He gave spectacular lectures that were very interesting and clear. He is a hardass on his midterms and finals but if you work really hard (i mean really) you can get an A, but i emphasize really hard again. So if you really want to learn, take him, otherwise take someone else that is easier.
Very hard!! He Assigns well over 100 pages a week to read... easy to fall behind! His lectures are interesting to hear and not extremely boring to listen to but his Midterm is extremely hard - over half the class failed- thank god for Redos. HARD Papers (very picky) but OK as a teacher but must work extremely hard!
What r u guys complaining about? He is demanding, but his lectures don't put you to sleep, he's funny sometimes, and he really likes his job. Exams are easy (if you do the the journal) and you have to be a moron to fail his map quizzes . . . can't you find France on a map? May intimitate freshmen, but work at it and you can actually have fun
He assigned many readings...just skim them over. Go to class. That is more important. He is very opinionated, and not very clear on instructions. His midterm is very difficult, but he lets you redo it. He is extremely intimidating, but don't let that get to you, out of class, he's really a nice guy.
This was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. He was not easy to go and talk to, and he did not understand personal issues or conflictions.
All essay test which for me was awesome. Doing the journal helps but doesnt really matter (he will never check them). The group project sucks but just make sure u answer all ?s and bring it into the Writing Lab. The final is easy but its just the midterm that sucks...about 75% of the class has to redo it and you can still pull off an A.
He was one of the greatest teachers i've ever had. Honestly his classes are alot of work but he is EXTREMELY organized and make the class interesting. Instead of a history lesson its more like listening to a story. The two papers are alot of work so don't procrastinate. My group started on the essay right away and we got an A.
Over all a caring individual.
Really a great guy, if you come to class and appear to care, you will do fine, YOU MUST FOLLOW DIRECTIONS ON ESSAYS, other wise he will make u re write it
This class ruined my freshman year. He would assign over 50 pages of HARD material to read before every class period. His projects are difficult and involved, but it is is groups. The midterm is very very difficult, but the final isn't bad. true his lectures don't put you to sleep, but i still wouldn't recommend him as a professor.
I don’t understand why anyone would complain about Macias, he is the man. I would recommend him to all the freshman because he prepares you for any class you will face at college. His lectures were great and his exams weren’t that hard, if you prepared for them. In the words of Macias, to all those that are complaining, “Suck it up kiddies."
I cant believe what I am reading! Macias was the most unorganized teacher I have ever had...we accomplished nothing in class and I might as well have never read. The final was a ridiculous amount of work with way too little guidance and higher than the heavens expactations...I am doind everything in my power to not take him again!
He does like to hear himself talk, but he is not horrible. Some of his lectures are actually somewhat interesting. He assigns alot of homework everytnight and journals, but he does not collect or grade them. If you just skim through the readings you'll be fine. The assignments are mainly for help with writing the midterm and final.
I took a class from Victor as a visiting prof at the U of Minnesota. Overall, his lectures were extremely animated, informative, and entertaining. But, the course trajectory was never really all that clear. Also, I would agree with the "arrogant prick" comment, but I don't necessarily feel that it was a bad thing. Interesting guy.
Yes, he's a hard grader, but he's the most brilliant, most hilarious lecturer I've ever had. If you don't want to work, then don't take him. If you want to learn something and realize how good you can be, take him. He's one of UW-L's best-kept secrets. My favorite professor ever.
Where to start. Directions are never clear until he gives it back to you and makes you redo it. Not the worst thing in the world, but why not give concise directions to begin with. Hard grader and sometimes a jerk. Boring lectures. The final included 10pg Group paper, 10pg indiv paper, 2 hr in class exam. 2borin & 2inconsistant to take again
Super easy. Passed with an A/B and didn't really read at all. Most of the lectures are interesting but only a few are helpful with writing papers. The rest of the lectures aren't used for anything. Watch for grammar in papers but he has his expectations in the syllabus. Good class to take.
Horrible
He was ok. I got an A in his class but thought I would do worse. He expects a lot from his students, but overall he prepares you for grad school. As much as I wanted to drop the class I'm glad that I didn't because I learned proper skills (book review, historiography) that other 300 level history teachers hadn't taught. Tough, but good.
At first, I thought I was going to fail this class but @ the end I realized I was just stressing 4 nothing. I'll admit, it seems like there's quite a few workload but don't be deceived. As long as u do the work, u'll be fine.Just pay attention in class&take notes. He's a cool professor&although he may seem hard, all he wants 2 do is help u succeed.
I took this class last summer, online. It is a lot of work, but I paced myself. When boss changed my workschedule and I could not keep up with the class the professor cut me some slack. YOu do have to do readings. If this is your first online class, e-mail him. Well, he'll be e-mailing you anyway, a lot, but it is online. I liked it.
One of the hardest professors I've had at UWL. He expects a LOT for a 100 level general education course. If you read everything he assigns and are a good writer you can get an A or a B, but GOOD LUCK because your life is going to be full of History.
If you have trouble reading, like I do, his classes will be very hard. I sent him an email stating my issues with reading and he actually responded with advice and understanding, offering to meet with me in person to go over how to look for the important parts of the articles he'd assigned. Very helpful but VERY HARD!
It was a lot of reading. I did all of them and took notes and that really helped me on the midterm and the final papers. He is willing to help and is open to questions. Sometimes the class got long (I had it 1.5 hours on Tues.&Thurs.) We talked about many interesting topics.
For a Gen-Ed the prof had expectations that were way to high. The syllabus stated "quizzes" were worth a good portion of the grade, there was ONE 3 point quiz we took. I never did the reading, but went to class every day and took notes. There is no feedback on your grade. And the expectations for the final was ridiculous. DO NOT TAKE.
A lot of work for a gen ed course. Very unclear about expectations for assignments. He comes off as kind of rude and seemed very unapproachable. This was a terrible class and would recommend a different professor.
I was intimidated at first, but realized that the long syllabus is actually useful. He helped me improve my writing and I liked the readings he assigns. Get notes from others if you miss class. Tough, but funny and good. No videos.
He had high expectations, but honestly we're in college now so it is to be expected. Whats really helpful is that with your midterm he lets you redo it, so you understand your mistakes and how much you should include. I loved how he would state interesting facts randomly, however the class did get really long with lectures (i had it 1.5 hours)
I've taken Dr. Macias twice now, and loved his class. He's a tough teacher, but you learn a lot and he really improves your writing. Be prepared to do a fair amount of work, but he is a fair grader. His lectures are interesting and he's very helpful...all you have to do it ask!
Kind of crazy expectations seems like a nice guy but can sometimes come off as trying to shove his views down your throat. Can be a tough grader EX: When we did our midterm paper about 5 of the 50 student didn't have to redo it. I would strongly recommend finding a different professor
I was wary of taking this teacher because of his ratings on being a difficult grader. If you know the basic principles of writing (citations, using spell check, proofreading, format)that every college student should know, you will do fine. He is honestly not as bad as the ratings on here and is very helpful for an an online professor.
He has ridiculous expectations. At least 8 people dropped after receiving the midterm assignment. The term paper is ridiculous and done in a group, and the final is 2 papers (like the midterm) plus and in-class essay. Avoid him if you can.
Very good class, I was very skeptical at the beginning and thought of dropping the class. I chose to focus on this class over all my others and be very meticulous with the exam papers. I came out of the class with a A. He is very willing to work with you. Twice this semester I forgot to add a piece into my paper and he gave extra time.
His expectations are ridiculous. Your grade is based off papers only (each at least 8 pages). He lets you redo the midterm but is not clear at all on what you need to change. I talked to him multiple times I still did not understand. Each time I got back my paper he said I needed to change something that he previously said was good.
HORRIBLE! For a 100 level general ed course his expectations were too high. I suggest not taking him. When asked for help, I never received and clarity on what he wanted!
Very traditional professor, who does not use D2L. Expect a lecture every class including the first, and reading about 3 hours a week. GET ON HIS GOOD SIDE, and sit in the front, he will remember you better. Papers are tough, but not impossible by any means.
He is one of the best professors I have had. I was unsure about the class at first but I have had my fair share of bad professors and he stands out as one of the best. He took the time to listen to my concerns and wanted me to do well. He cared about me as an individual, not just a number.
Excellent teacher. Will push you, and demands respect and class in, well, class. He will remove your hat if you wear one. Excellent text selection and discussions. One of a handful of profs that intensely cares about his students- a natural leader. He and a few other professors inspired me to not drop out and stick it out. Thank you, Sir.
He makes history interesting! Although his lectures are plain, he is interactive and jokes around. Midterm is one large paper but corrections are allowed although feedback is somewhat unclear-if you do what he offers on all papers you should do well. No midterm exam at all and final is only part exam, most writing.
Dr. Macias-Gonzalez was honestly one of my favorite professors at UWL. He has a perfect clear cut objective of making you work, but also realizing it is a 100 level course. No exams and three large papers make up your grade. Highly recommend him.
I took his class for gen ed, History 102. Actually a really funny guy, and gives good life advice! Your grade is based mostly off papers, but if you follow all the directions and answer everything from the prompt and you should do fine. Make sure to have good spelling and grammar, or he will deduct major points.
Seems very intimidating at first due to the work load, but gives you plenty of time and his expectations are clear. Stay on top of things and you will do fine. Assignments can be tough but he is a fairly easy grader. Lectures can get long but he's a funny guy and keeps things interesting.
I took this class over J-term, and it was pretty easy. Weekly terms to define with one paper a week for three weeks. Most everything is an A.
The first impression of Dr. Macias was very intimidating. I was worried his class would be difficult for a Gen-Ed. But as the class goes on, you realize that he has a good sense of dry-humor and gives you opportunities for a good grade. He's not very approachable but you can always send him an email with questions.
He talks all class and the topics are not all that interesting. He is funny at times but his teaching is mostly boring and hard to understand. Only take his classes if you really enjoy the topic.
He is very strict, but as long as you follow his rules/guidelines he won't have anything against you. He can be pretty funny, but he isn't afraid to yell or call you out in front of the class for something. He assigns very few grades, so you need to make sure you don't screw them up.
I was terrified when I began this class, because I was very intimidated by Dr. Macias-Gonzalez. However, I ended up really enjoying the class, because he is truly brilliant and also very funny. He has high expectations, but I really appreciated how much he cared and he is very clear about his expectations. Overall, he's an amazing professor.
Dr. Macias- Gonzalez was a great professor! He definitively cares about you as a student and wants you to succeed in class! If you send him an understanding email about an extension he is willing to work with you. His lectures do tend to be very heavy and you must read in order to help you write your essays but overall easy grader and awesome prof
Nothing
I took him online during the summer. I had four papers, and he let us redo two of them. Each paper took me several hours, and I did have to use the textbook. It was a good SUMMER course though because it was one paper a week with one vocab homework assignment. He is super nice if you get to know him. He emailed me back with emojis once.
Most intimidating professor that I have ever had which made it really difficult for me to approach him with questions and/or clarification. Every class period, you sit there and listen to him talk and it gets extremely boring. He does care about his students but I didn't have the chance to build a relationship because he was very intimidating.
He is an intimidating person but is funny and wants you to do well in class. Gives opportunities to submit papers late and to redo papers for better grades.
Dr. Macias-Gonzalez is intimidating, but once you conversate with him, he is helpful and really funny. His lectures are heavy and can be lengthy, but he throws in a joke here and there. You do have to read quite a bit, but he gives you studying tips if needed. Take him if you don't mind being pushed a bit out of your comfort-zone.
Dr. Macias-Gonzalez is really funny. He makes a lot of jokes throughout his lectures but they still end up to be heavy. He recognizes once in a while when he goes too fast and slows down for a discussion but then he expects the whole class to participate. His grading is very straightforward and he gives good feedback on essays and allows revision.
Dr. Macias-Gonzalez is a great professor who wants you to learn and succeed in his class. He helps you get the best possible grade by returning papers for you to revise until you get an A. The lectures are long and can be boring but his knowledge for the subject makes them interesting.
Dr. Macias-Gonzalez is a very intimidating person at first, however once the semester goes on you can see he has a good sense of humor and he really wants the best for his students. The class itself is a lot of work. One midterm essay, 16 page term paper group project, take home final essay and in class final. Decent professor, boring subject.
Professor made me write and entire three page essay because I didn't use there crappy provided material. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THEY HAVEN'T BEEN FIRED.
I took HIS 102 online as a summer course. 1 vocab homework assignment and a 3-5 page paper per week, along with a lot of reading. Dr. Macias-Gonzalez is very clear on his expectations and gives great feedback. As long as you have college level reading and writing skills, I would recommend taking his class.
Lecture is really boring, and he gives a lot of information quickly so it can be difficult to keep up. It's probably better to take notes by laptop if you want to get as much information down as possible. It's clear he's very knowledgable on the subject though. He is very intimidating at first, but becomes less so over time.
Worst prof ever. Lecture heavy classes with 12 point font on the slides, non-interesting material and mandatory attendance. Very unwilling to help and interact with students. Very intimidating and rude. Too much work for a gen ed, do not take.
He's super funny and is a pretty good teacher but the content is hard to grasp unless you have a strong interest in history. He doesn't take attendance but you'd be a fool to miss class. He pretty much just talks about the content, often times with no slides, and you just take notes on whatever he says. The term paper is also the worst.
Victor is a super nice person, but did not make a freshman seminar class interesting or valuable enough for it to be worth taking. He worked too hard to be relatable and not hard enough on providing useful information for new freshmen. Expect to receive almost no feedback until you get your semester grade and papers that provide no practical use.
If I could use more than 3 tags they'd include: hilarious, group project, lecture heavy, and caring. He truly cares about how his students do; not only in his class but in college in general. He is old school (think Indiana Jones in the scenes when he's lecturing in class). His lectures cover EVERYTHING you need to know for the written exams!
I highly suggest avoiding any courses with Dr. Macias-Gonzalez. Very unclear with grading criteria/what to know. EXTREMELY tough grader. Does not put in grades. Only about 3 ways to gain points which are ALL papers. Lecture power points are NOT posted online AND they all are about 12 pt. font filled top to bottom with paragraphs of notes. good luck
This man is something else. You have three assignments total: midterm, term paper (group project-16 pages), and the final. Does not put in grades. Talks fast and wants you to write down everything he says. Calls you out if you look confused. Called us muffins on the first day.. umm okay? Is so inconsiderate toward students. Do not take this class.
I literally hate this class with him so much. There are no rubrics so you have no idea what he wants from you. Powerpoints have nothing to do with the class. All of the exams are just papers and none of them make sense on how to do them.
He is extremely rude and talks in a VERY demeaning way. I went to his office hours a few times and he treats you like you are stupid for having questions. Very VERY rude guy. TAKE ANYONE ELSE!!! I didnt learn anything expect that I will never take him again.
One of the rudest, close-minded, and unorganized professors I have had at UWL. Will not explain or help students understand topics that they do not understand right away. He rambles for an hour and half without a powerpoint except for a word or two with no explanation of what they mean. Very hard to keep up with him. Do not take this class.
Incredibly condescending and rude. He talks to you like you're stupid and his grading criteria are incredibly unclear. If you can take another professor, do so. He'll leave you feeling like you put in way too much effort for a gen ed with no actual learning. His lectures are confusing and difficult to follow
Victor has a very rough personality I will admit that, but he was a very good teacher for me. I took this history of gender and sexuality online and slept through every lecture and just BSed my way through the class. He has very unclear rubrics, doesn't give the best feedback and can be a bit rude at times. But I can't seem to not like him.
HIS200 -I had a difficult time navigating Victor's class. He can come across very condescending and absorbed in his own work, making it difficult for students to be comfortable to ask any questions. Generally, whether he means to or not, he makes students feel ill equipped to succeed. I do not recommend, take it with any other professor.
This professor doesn't specify what he wants on the graded papers, and then calls students out in front of the whole class that they didn't do the paper right.
Though the class was lecture-heavy and pretty challenging, Dr. Macías-Gonzalez cares about his students and wants to see you do well. I'd recommend attending class if you want to get an A. He asked me for my feedback a few times, which made me feel respected and heard. The only thing that really sucked was that you're only graded based on papers.
Professor Macias-Gonzales was very rude to students and degraded them anytime someone would as a question that he believed they should know. It is clear that he is passionate about this topic, but most of the class doesn't even cover the topic of gender and sexuality. Each class is spent with him lecturing without power points and going off topic.
You can definitely tell that this professor is extremely advanced and passionate in this category of history, but if he shows up in your schedule: turn and run. He yells at students for asking valid questions, hasn't put any grades in (there is one week left in the semester), and lectures for an hour and 20 without any visuals or skeleton notes.
He will assign ~100 pages of reading a week, lecture for the whole class, and never actually go over the reading. He's extremely condescending and rude if you don't answer how he wants. However, the only assignments are 2 papers for the whole semester (first ~2 pgs, second ~16 pgs with a partner). It was not worth it though.
This class was awful. He never put any of our grades into Canvas and we would have to email him for our grades. He was a very tough grader. We only did one paper, a novel analysis group project, and then a final paper. He assigned a lot of reading and it wasn't ever needed. I would never recommend his class. He is very passive aggressive.
If you're taking an online class, you know how to read and follow directions, it's not a hard class to get an A. Just make sure you read everything and your papers include everything he asks for. He's fair, grades fair, responds quickly and respects you trying!!
Professor Macias- Gonzalez is incredibly passive-aggressive and rude. Being in his class was the part of my day I dreaded. I would be anything in your power not to take one of his classes. The only good thing was there wasn't much homework other than very long papers that he grades so incredibly hard it is almost impossible to get an A on.
I'm not sure why he has such bad reviews. He is a decent professor and there's little homework. There is outside reading assigned, but isn't necessary to read. We've written one midterm, read a book and did a group paper and presentation on it, and then a final paper. Only downside is that lecture gets long, and he doesn't enter grades on canvas.
He lectures off of slides with paragraphs of pt 11 font, never stopping for questions. When we presented in class, he interrupted one group in the middle to tell them that they were wrong and not doing a good job. He is disrespectful, unorganized, and teaches way above student's levels of knowledge. He doesn't "believe" in A's. Don't take him.
Lectures are very long and boring with no organization at all. He will write one word on the board and talk about it for 20 minutes. He is very passive aggressive and will stop lecturing to call you out. He doesn't use canvas so you have no idea what your grade is. There's two papers that he calls "exams" and then one group paper based on a book.
The lecture is necessary but long, terribly boring, and hard to follow. I think he has a funny personality and understands his students well, but he is not a very good professor for a level 100 class as he just flaunts his knowledge and doesn't teach. There are only three papers though, one being with a group, but he's very picky with many quirks.
If I could choose 0 i would. I don't know how his rating is a 3.1. This man made me want to transfer schools. He needs a lesson in respect. He is rude, passive agressive, and all around bad. DONT NOT TAKE
He is a really slow grader and your only grade is from like 3 papers, so it can be very nerve wracking to see your final grade. He talks the entire time in class and barely takes a breath.
He's...interesting-I liked him. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF POOR WRITER bc graded ONLY on 3 papers-midterm, final, & group project (read novel & do reflection together). Classes are ONLY lecture-to get A, fr write down everything he says. Assigns non-graded readings (for these, take light notes/outline so u can go back easily to find info for essays)
This class was very interesting but too much for a 100-level class. Though there was very little to be graded, there were not
Only 3 papers, including a group project. Talks a lot in lectures with no visual aid, which makes it easy to miss key points if you cannot hear or understand him. For group projects, there were no progress checks to make sure work was getting done BY EVERYONE in group. There are readings but mostly skimmed for essays. Very insightful class tho.
I thought the class was interesting and not too difficult. Take good, organized notes to cite from on the papers, but beware, his lectures are fast. There is no homework, only the midterm and final papers and the novel analysis term paper which is a group project. However, if you are not a strong writer, I would not recommend taking this class.
This professors lectures dragged on for the entire class and he barely stopped. We only had a few assignments that were all papers and he didn't put the grades for them in the grade book. He didn't post his lectures online. I didn't learn anything from this class and BSed my way through all the papers.
very lecture heavy and you have to be on your A+ game when writing down notes to not miss anything, but he is very good with giving feedback and teaching us the right skills to write a good literature review. as long as you attend class and pay attention you can ace this class!
He lectures without giving you any materials (no notes/note outlines, ppts, or visuals; you have to pay close attention to what he says the whole time). He doesn't post grades on Canvas, wings, or even give you a solid grade on your papers, so you'll go the whole semester not knowing your grade.
Engaging lectures but lacking structure. Rely on organized note-taking and the textbook to succeed. The grading is paper-heavy, so strong writing skills are a must. Unstuck study can help with study prep.
He assumes we will devote all our time to his class and makes it clear that it is his way or the highway. The grade book is only a midterm paper, a final paper, and a group paper that is 14+ pages, (all for a 100-level gen-ed) but he doesn't put grades in so idk what my grade is. He is nice if he likes you.
Dr. Macias-Gonzalez provided interesting lectures, but make sure you take organized notes, you will be going back to them. The only items in the gradebook for the whole semester are a midterm and final paper, along with a group-written term paper and short presentation. Make sure to start reading your novel for the term paper as soon as possible.
He is so pretentious and rude and made me feel so belittled. The only graded things are a midterm paper, a final paper, and a group paper that takes the entire semester to read the book and so long to write a super long paper. He doesn't have rubrics for his papers, grades super unfairly, and takes off points for stuff he never even made clear.
Professor Macias-Gonzalez is a very well-structured professor and cares very deeply for his students. You are graded on a Term-long paper, a midterm, and a final (all written) and take home. The only critique I would give a bump down would be his lectures as they can get long and dry
Took HIS110 over winter break/J-term. HIGHLY recommend doing this if you're considering it at all. Just skim the assigned material and analyze the passages you need for the weekly essays. It's super easy if you just put in the work (7-8ish hrs a week). Easily manageable workload if you're working 10-12hrs a week. Fair grader, asynchronous class.
Extremely unstructured class. I'm consistently confused in each of his lectures, where he will make sure we know he is highly knowledgeable, yet i have a very hard time following every one of his lessons. Essays are written off of just the notes you take in class + textbook readings, so make sure you write down as much as possible in lecture.
