Malo is awesome. Very interested in the students, very helpful for everything. There aren't really any rigid guidelines for essays, but if you get a low grade, he always allows a rewrite. Laid-back class. DO NOT TAKE THIS IF YOU'RE NOT IN THE TEACHER LICENSURE PROGRAM. You won't get the same experience if you aren't planning on teaching.
Learned more about teaching English in one semester than I have in all my other classes. If you want to be any kind of a teacher - take him. He will mark up your papers but he lets you rewrite them for better grades.
I'm not a teaching major, I took this class to fulfill a requirement. Was still a great class. Goes by fast, rarely boring. If you can get in this class, take it.
Fun class. Great books to read and lots of discussion.
8am class and never fell asleep. Great professor that doesn't talk down to you. Had field trip to see Rocky Horror play. Was wild. Reviews for midterm and final. IF you have to take this class take Malo.
Professor Malo is so helpful! If you have questions just ask because he will make time for you and your questions. I am thankful for everything I learned.
Great teacher! Always there if you need help. He actually wants his students to improve their skills rather than just giving a grade. Highly recommend even if you aren't an education major.
Just finished my teaching internship in middle school. I wasn't required to take this class but I am soooooooo glad I did. Almost everything I learned in Dr. Malo's class was useful. If you're going to teach at any level, take this class. A lot of writing but worth it - Dr. Malo is beyond helpful and is very patient with those who need help.
Great class. Great books. Great discussions.
Malo is a great professor! Talks a lot about his experience as a teacher and provides really insightful lessons in the classroom. This is not a class you should take if you have no business being a teacher, or you'll be doing a lot of work just for a grade. Gives a lot of papers with small amount of time to do some of them, but you can rewrite.
I loved Dr. Malo's class hes extremely lively and definitely knows what hes talking about. Since it was 101 it was extremely basic but he made it lively and fun with the reading assignments. If you take ENG 101 take Malo's class.
Lots of reading but the books are the most popular young adult novels and most are short and easy reads. Lots of discussion so keep up with the reading. Final papers are workshopped so you get to rewrite them before final drafts are due. Fantastic discussions.
Class is discussion based and while it's a lot of reading, most of the novels are short and easy (and also good) reads and it is a literature class after all. If you keep up with reading and participate its a great class.
Dr. Malo was hilarious. Mostly a discussion based class with grades based on a small project, 3-4 quizzes on small articles, and a few papers. Very clear about what he wants in the papers. Willing to go over drafts and help improve your writing skills. Never got bored in his class.
If you need a course in the summer, this is it. Doesn't try to fit a full semester work into a short summer term. You basically pick your grade, if you keep up with the reading you will get As on all the quizzes and if you participate in discussions, even better. Class goes by fast. Lectures are short and to the point and I actually learned alot
Malo was fantastic. I took his course over the summer and could have been bored by long lectures but wasn't. He will definitely talk to you about your papers and help you as long as you ask!
Took this in summer. Reading was reasonable for a summer course. He is very clear on what he wants in papers and will read your drafts and give you feedback. Great choice of novels. Gives short tests to make sure you read the novel - if you read them, EASY As. Class is mostly discussion. Never boring. A GREAT summer class.
Best course by far any teaching major could take. I learned tons from the assignments but learned even more from the lectures and discussions about teaching. I used so much from his class during my teaching internship. It's not an easy class but he allows you to rewrite most everything for a better grade.
In this Writing for Teacher's class he is very strict on MLA format. You can rewrite any of the papers for a B, but if you want to get an A it better be PERFECT the first time; he will hand it back to you in a jiffy if it's not. Has a lot of experience and can come off as quite arrogant but all in all he's a good professor! Lots of jokes.
Malo is extremely smart and knowledgeable on the material he teaches and never ceases to make class FUN. He constantly cracks jokes and makes the time fly by. He knows exactly what he is looking for in essays, and if you do X Y and Z you should get a great grade in the class. That being said, participate and do your work and im sure youll love him
I enjoyed Dr. Malo's class for the most part. He's funny, entertaining, and conducted great lectures. His class was far from boring. The reading quizzes were sometimes tricky, so make sure you pay close attention to the readings. He expects very in depth answers on the midterm/final, so be prepared to explain yourself and do A LOT of writing.
in short Malo is amazing and turns a boring subject into something engaging and exciting to learn. A genuinely nice and super funny guy. I thought this would be my least favorite class this semester but it by far the opposite. Always implementing pop culture into his teaching. If you need an aesthetics credit TAKE THIS CLASS!!
I LOVE this professor, he made each class so fun and worth going to, so hilarious. The material was great too! Only issue is that there are 3 tests, and that's it. So if you aren't a test person then expect to not do so hot in the class because the tests are difficult. If you go to class (which isn't mandatory) you'll be fine.
Hilarious. This was my favorite class and it flew by - never boring. Makes tons of connections between mythology and modern culture. Three tests. Does test reviews, gives extra credit at them (and donuts), curves the grading scale. If you ever get a chance to take this class - do it.
Professor Malo-Juvera is great! There are only 3 grades for this class, but if you study you'll do fine. Although attendance isn't mandatory, GO TO CLASS!! This is the main way to get the information you need to pass the two tests and the final. Very passionate about the content of the course and hilarious. Definitely would take again.
Malo is a really funny professor, has really interesting lectures, definitely not boring. I always enjoyed going to his class, his lectures were really cool and relevant to today. Only three exams, but not a problem if you study. He makes fun review games before exams as well. Really cool teacher.
Hilarious guy, easy A if you just go to class and review the powerpoints. His lectures are so entertaining its hard not to pay attention, and he has review sessions before exams. If you need the requirement, TAKE THIS CLASS!
Mr. Malo is hilarious even during his lectures and includes funny videos in the lecture. He doesn't take attendance so you don't have to go to class but I still would most of the time. He gives extra credit options and gives you a chance to play kahoot and get extra credit or play to get an A and not take the test. He is a great teacher.
one of the best professors I've ever had
Dr. Malo is one of the most entertaining professors I have ever had. Attending class is pretty necessary to pass the class, but you will not want to skip! He keeps the lectures interesting and he is so hilarious and very giving with grades. He also has reviews before the test where you have the chance to earn extra credit or make a 100 on the test!
Unless you have extreme interest in mythology DO NOT take this class. It is extremely difficult and your grade is dependent only on your tests. The tests are just memorization, but you need to really know the material in order to do well. Definitely wouldnt recommend this class unless you dont have any other options.
One of my favorite classes ever. Doesn't take attendance but I didn't mind going to class because he is hilarious - class flies by. Three tests and a final. Posts all lectures and does test reviews before each test where you can get extra credit or even a free A on the test. Most test questions from reviews. If you can't ace this class...
Best professor at UNCW. The lectures are hilarious and he manages to relate everyday issues to the course material. The class is so easy, listen to the lecture and look over the powerpoints before the exam you are sure to pass the class. If you're looking for an easy, fun, and enjoyable class, take Mythology with Malo. You won't be disappointed.
Malo has definitely been one of my favorite professors so far. He's funny, and I actually enjoyed going to class. There are only 3 exams and a final, but if you study (and he offers a review before every exam, where you could get a 100 on the exam), you'll do very well in this class! Also, attendance isn't mandatory, but you should still go.
He was one of my favorite professors. I always enjoyed the lectures, and the tests were straight forward if you study the powerpoints, which he posts online. There was never a dull moment during the lectures and there was a review of the information before every test.
Malo is hilarious, and makes pop culture references and jokes to help us contextualize the ancient mythology. Attendance isn't required, but it helps in passing the 4 tests, which are the ONLY GRADES. He also offers extra credit with a Kahoot review game. Lots of memorization, but interesting material.
Mythology is a hard class because its based just on memorization. In this class you only get graded on tests and the final, so it is super important that you study. Attendance isnt mandatory, but he is so funny that you will want to come. He posts lectures so you can go over notes and provides study days in class before tests. Would recommend!
Amazing, best professor I've ever had. He is really fun, chill, and entertaining. Dr. Malo makes you want to go to class and you will enjoy it. There's only 3 tests all semester but he prepares you really well for each one. He's hilarious and I wish I could take a class with him again. Attendance isn't taken and lectures are posted online.
(ACTUALLY ENG210) one of my favorite classes/professors! he's incredibly knowledgeable and his lectures are always interesting and engaging. attendance isn't mandatory, but he puts some things that he says in class (that aren't on the slides) on tests. no papers/hw and not too much reading. if you love mythology, you'll LOVE this class!
His lectures will always leave you wanting more. Class always seems to end too early. He has so much to say and is so wise, you will love his classes. He taught for 20 years in low-income schools, so he has a lot of experience. He focuses on structure, and assignments are either quality or quantity-based. Follow all directions and you will get an A
A hilarious guy who makes this class worth it! You only have 3 tests and the final so studying is important but he does review sessions in class through Kahoot and if you win, you automatically get an A on the test. Having a slight interest in Greek Mythology definitely helps. But no attendance! Take the class you won't regret it.
(Took his ENG 210 class, didn't give me the 210 option for some reason 3) Professor Malo is an amazing teacher, his lectures akin to watching your favorite commentary YouTuber or going to a late-night comedy show with an emphasis in educating you on Greek Mythology. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but who the heckle would want to miss his class?
I took Dr. Malo's Mythology class (ENG 210) and he was incredible. He is really funny, knowledgeable, and makes learning fun. There are only 3 tests but he does a review game for each one that's super helpful. He's one of the best and most enjoyable teachers I've ever had.
Professor Malo is a great guy, but do NOT take this class. He has 4 exams. That is the only thing that gets graded. No assignments or anything else. Each exam has about 33 questions on it, so if you get 3 wrong, youre automatically at a 90%. It is completely unfair. He sucks.
Dr. Malo is a good professor. The only grades during this course are 3 tests & a final. If you are not a good test taker, don't take this class. He mainly lectures, but everything he says is important. Before all of the tests, he provides a review session & winning team can choose from getting a 100 on the test or 10 extra credit points
Three tests. Final. Attendance not required. Class is mostly lecture but Dr Malo is an amazing lecturer, hilarious but at the same time deeply knowledgeable about the topic. Makes mythology relevant to todays world. Never boring and learned a ton of interesting things I would have never considered before. Great class.
The class is interesting. The content is interesting. Dr. Malo. I enjoyed the way he lectured because it was interesting and he made it easy to understand. However, WHY THE HECK do we only have 3 exams?? The exams are fair- it's what he says it is but there's just so much. Go to class, go through the stories and study! It's pretty basic
Course is straightforward lecture but Malo is hilarious and makes mythology relevant to today. If you go to class and the reviews (where you can win extra credit points on the tests) the class is an easy A. Tests are straightforward. Attendance is not required but if you want an A go to class because he asks questions on tests from lectures.
Malo is not afraid of public flogging you. He is never available outside of class and by chance you get to set up a meeting with him you may never come out of his office for being consumed by the mess. He thinks his opinion is the only one that matters&does not care about you. The only thing I learned from him was how to not be a teacher.
Dr. Malo is the ideal college professor, at least for gen eds. He makes his lectures easy and fun to attend. The only grades you get are for the tests, so if you want at least a B just go to class. I never used the textbook, went to class every day, and got an A. Before each test is a kahoot game for review with the exact questions on the test!!
Great choice for a summer class - took mythology online. Clear expectations, reasonable amount of work for summer, sent lots of reminders, and even had a zoom meeting with me when I had questions. If you need a summer gen ed class, this is it!
Best Covid class ever - I had it in Fall 20 online, but he teaches it live online. Was the closest thing to a real class I had all term. Only class i looked forward to going to. If you want to feel like you're in college, this is the class you want.
A wonderful professor. I took Mythology with him online and he made online lectures amazing. He grades off of three tests and a few quizzes and that's it. No other homework required. He is a wonderful teacher and absolutely hilarious in class. Would definitely recommend. He definitely expects you to know your stuff though.
Dr. Malo's not a bad teacher, and his class isn't hard. I'm leaving this because he's EXTREMELY focused on women oppression/abuse. None of the tests are on this, but he will heavily discuss it to the point of obsession. To quote him: "if you've been assaulted and are offended by what I'm saying you obviously need therapy." Makes many uncomfortable
Had class live on zoom during covid. Very smart professor and hilarious too. Class was never boring. Really opened my eyes to how mythology is still important and influential in modern times. If you dont miss class you can get by without the textbook. Easy workload/just three tests and easy in class quizzes.
great teacher - funny and the class and topics were always interesting. great experience!
The entire grade is only 3 exams. I'm a pretty good test taker but the questions he asks are horrible. If you don't listen closely to every word he says you will not pass the exams. I felt like I needed to have taken an introductory mythology course before this class. If you haven't read the Iliad and the Odyssey don't take the class.
Best professor i have had, Hilarious but at the same time brilliant insights on myth and modern culture. Extra credit reviews for tests.
I had professor malo for mythology, and he really made lectures fun to be in. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you don't go, you'll for sure miss things on the test. Only grades in the class are the four exams taken. As long as you go to class and study a little before, easy A! He's a great and fun professor.
If you're getting ready to register, do not make the same mistakes that I did when looking at this site. His class would have been very easy online but if you look at the reviews pre-covid you will see that it is a VERY difficult class. He has 3 tests and a final that make the entire grade and his tests are very hard. His lectures are good tho
Dr. Malo was a very nice instructor. His class was easy and you could tell he knew and loved the subjects he talked about. His class was based on exams only but the exams are all multiple choice so it wasn't too bad. Attendance isn't mandatory but you miss A LOT if you don't go to class.
Dr. Malo is one of the best professors at uncw. He is hilarious and makes class very fun and interesting. Youre only graded on 4 exams which is scary, but he does review kahoots and if you study you should be okay. Highly recommend taking his class for a fun and interesting credit!
lectures are the best, best class i've had and it got me into mythology, hilarious, entertaining, and never boring, don't miss class though but you will want to go to class. The tests are easy if you go to class and Dr. Malo does reviews with extra credit for every test. You don't need the text if you go to class.
Professor Malo is an awesome guy, and I really enjoyed his class. Here's the thing, I am normally an A/B student and I struggled to maintain a C in his class. If you're taking mythology for fun, don't take Malo's class. He only has 3 exam grades for the entire semester and his exams are crazy hard. If you have him, make sure you study hard.
I am not joking when I tell you I shed so many tears over this class. There are only 3 tests that make up your whole grade. I went to EVERY and I STRUGGLED to pass the exams. I studied for hours to do good on the final and that is the only reason I got a B. Don't get me wrong, crazy good lectures and super interesting, but don't take expecting an A
Dr. Malo has resurrected fun lectures! When I was younger, the best teachers I had through grade school always made lectures fun and interactive, which in turn provided an excellent catalyst for retaining the material. PSA if you are easily offended, maybe don't take mythology as it is graphic material to digest. Put in effort and you will succeed!
He was one of the most difficult but interesting professors I have had thus far. The tests are extremely difficult if you don't go to class or read the textbook, but he makes the class so intriguing that you will want to attend. He also offers extra credit from Kahoots and random class days. Although it was hard this was my favorite class.
While I enjoyed Dr. Malo's class, it was one of the hardest that I've ever taken. He makes it very clear that your grade is based of three tests and a final. BELIEVE HIM. If you're not a good test taker, I don't suggest taking this class. Other than that, his lectures are very interesting and he makes you want to go to class every session!
Dr. Malo is an amazing teacher and mentor. His lectures and assignments are engaging (and hilarious), and he's a fair grader who will work with you to help you succeed. The workload is very manageable. He responds to emails faster than any other professor I've had, and he's always got a solution. Would take any class with him.
Malo is a great professor. This class may not be an easy A, but you should definitely walk away with nothing lower than a B. Show up to class and participate during lecture. You have discussions about life lessons and everyday problems. Overall, take this class with Dr. Malo, It is extremely engaging and exciting.
I enjoyed Professor Malo as a person but his class was definitely very very hard. He gave no assignments whatsoever and our only grades in the class were the three tests we took during the semester. It was stressful. he wore a mask the entire class and spoke fast. Overall, I would not recommend this course to ANYONE
Dr. Malo is the funniest professor I have ever had. His class is extremely entertaining. It is only graded on 4 exams so make sure you go to class and study. He does review sessions which I highly recommend going to because he essentially goes over the test via Kahoot then gives extra credit of you do well on Kahoot. Best professor EVER!
He goes off topic like crazy but he's a funny guy. I didn't go to the classes and just studied the power points before the tests and did pretty well. Grade is based solely on 3 tests. Questions are easy. Extra credit offered multiple times. Don't be intimidated by the lack of other grades, you will be fine.
Not a bad guy. He's funny, works with students, and knows what he's talking about. However, the tests are extremely difficult. There's too much material to know for each test and the whole grade is 3-4 tests. I wish he would spread it out more with more tests/quizzes throughout.
While it is based on 3 test he has multiple chances to get extra credit if you attend class. If you pay attention, take good notes, and ask for clarification after class he will help. I would not say this is an easy A but it is a very interesting class. I failed the first test, then showed up to every lecture after and got an A+.
I took this online in summer. Clear assignments, clear grading, sends out due date reminders, responds quickly to email. The course modules are structured so it is very clear what is expected. Can work ahead which I appreciated since I had to do some travel and work during the summer. Great course!
If I knew this class had an online option I would've just taken it online. He is really chill though. His only grades are the 3 exams + some extra credit. He does his best to help you pass (giving hints of what's on exams, does kahoots w/ class). If you aren't really into mythology stuff you need extra studying time or you won't do good.
Dr malo is super funny and makes lectures very interesting by applying ancient greek culture to modern western culture. Attendance is not mandatory but GO TO CLASS! He will give out test questions in class. Some questions can not be found on the slides and are things he just discusses in class. Also go to kahoot reviews and you should be a B+ min
While grades for this class only come from 3 exams, it is easy to get an A in this class. The professor, who is hilarious, is eager to give extra credit points and regularly gives test questions during class. Attendance is not required but it is best to show up. Also, the Kahoot review days are a major key to getting an A in the class.
I have never been more confused and angry at a class then this, i actually almost snapped my computer due to pure lack of sense this class makes. highly recommend against taking this class.
One of my favorite classes yet! Dr. Malo is witty, blunt, fun, AND incredibly knowledgable. He is versatile in his classroom instruction and was more than willing to discuss extra questions after class. Attendance is not recorded, but you really should go to class. There is no homework, just 4 exams. They aren't hard if you show up and take notes.
Entire grade is determined by 3 tests, but he's clear about what topics are on them, and gives opportunities to get bonus points on each test. Attending the lectures is suggested, as lots of test material is things mentioned in class, but he does post the slides he uses to be accessible outside of class.
only graded on tests, if you miss lecture you will not pass. super funny.
Prof. Malo was funny and entertaining during class. However, the overall grade for the class was based on 3 exams and nothing else, while participation is not required the test material rarely came from information from the slides, mostly from things he says in class. The test questions are difficult and don't largely pertain to class discussions.
I do not recommend taking this class if you are just wanting an "easy" credit. The entirety of the course is solely based on 3 exam grades that can be fairly difficult if you do not pay attention or attend class. He can be funny at times but can also take things a bit too far. He goes into depth of the course, considering this is an Intro class.
This class was very interesting, but difficult. You are only graded on 3 exams. There are a few opportunities for extra credit, but some are given out based on making him laugh or participating. I managed to get an A in the class, but some of my friends really struggled. I would take this class if you are a good test taker, but not for an easy "A".
Great summer online course. Clearly organized, each week has the same trype of assignemnts and due dates. The assignments are easy and you can work ahead. He repsonds to emails very quickly.
Graded on only 3 tests. Tests r actually pretty simple if you study so don't let the other comments scare you. Wouldn't recommend as an “easy” gen ed but not terrible. He's really funny
He talked about a lot of concepts of sociology and the way people are taught to think which in itself is a very fun thing to dive into. His knowledge is good but his delivery as a professor and the way he chooses to be engaging can be a real pain. Naturally you have to work for the grade you want but I think he goes overboard a lot.
I really enjoyed this class & was surprised at how well I did, as I am not the best test taker. Here's how to ace it: Take notes, write down all the test questions he mentions during class, study the slides carefully, & make notecards after every class to review as you go. Study before the Kahoot for extra credit ops. Super interesting & fun class!
Great professor, lots of extra credit chances, tests are straightforward, he tells you almost exactly what the test questions will be. Ties mythology to modern culture and makes it relevant. No attendance but don't miss class.
He is a very engaging teacher, and the lectures are interesting. Your only grades are three exams, but he gave us an extra credit opportunity. Definitely not easy to get an A in and don't recommend as an easy gen ed, but if you put in some work, you'll be fine.
Actual class is easy. Attendance not mandatory. Study hard for tests because they're in person with lockdown browser (there's only 3 tests as your entire grade). One time I got first in the Kahoot extra credit and still failed a test. Got A's for other two and ended with an 88. No textbook. Don't take class if you suck at tests. Funny professor.
Great gen ed class. Three tests but they're easy if you go to class. Tells you exactly what's on the tests no surprises and many chances for extra credit. Hilarious lectures. Never boring.
Three tests but they are easy if you come to class. Best general education course I have had. Extra credit and he lets you retake tests if you fail.
Hilarious lectures. Never bored in class. Makes mythology connect to current events. Test are easy, he tells you exactly what is on them, and does test reviews for extra credit and other ways to get extra credit too.
Easy and clear directions, perfect online summer class. Four modules, each one organized the same with the same type of assignments. Professor returns emails very quickly and send reminders for all assignments. You don't really need the book for the course as most of the material can be found online. Lets you redo assignments if you get them wrong
Three tests. No attendance. Lots of chances to get extra credit. His lectures are hilarious and he doesn't take attendance, but you wont want to miss the lectures. Was never bored. Reviews whats on the test before them. Great class.
Only 3 tests that are basically your whole grade, which is not the best. Pay attention in class fully and take notes. He gives you a big notecard to use on exams, which helps a lot.
Dr. Malo loves his job and the students. His class is test heavy but you get a notecard and he literally says THIS IS ON THE TEST. He doesn't try to trick you and has a true passion for his topic. He also gives extra credit and a redue test. No attendance required and he is hilarious. I wish he taught all subjects because he is an amazing teacher.
3 Exams, EXTRA CREDIT, KAHOOTS- if you go to class (which is not mandatory) you easily pass. Everyone who struggled with this course is ultimately lazy. THERES NO HOMEWORK, you can get an A on exam without the textbook and readings. This class is as easy as you make it- and Dr. Male is THE BEST.
