Took him Fall '04.I had to drop the class.Guy knows his stuff but is unable to share it with others.Needs 2-3 years of exp.to become a good teacher.Lots of work, fast pace - you can only take max.2 other classes to keep up.Assumes that u know something and just keeps on going.
Asking questions of this professor serves to confuse more than clarify.Subject matter not especially easy, you won't have a clue what's going on if you don't read the book not that you will if you do.Prof not very competent in communicating makes subjec more difficult
I hadc to drop the class. He tries, but he's terrible. Jumps from topic to topic and assumes everyone should follow. Not clear at all. He makes the class harder than it really is.
He is terrible. He doesn't know how to teach. He tries to teach everything, but it makes us confuse. He can't organize what he teaches. More than half of classmates drop the class. I study only with textbook. His lecture never help me to understand this subject.
Hard to understand him if you didn't pay much attention in FIN 3000 and 3610. KNows a lot but tends to make things harder that they are. If you do HW and practice test you will do fine.
Do your self a favor and DONT TAKE HIM!!!!! I never dropped a class and I had to this time because he was SO HORRIBLE!!!!! He CANT teach AT ALL!! he gives tooo many hw's and they are soooo confusing..half the time he doesnt know what he's teaching ..ANY ONE IS BETTER THAN HIM!TRUST ME
Sorry that the guys below didn't stay in the class. He is a lot better now; it is his first semester teaching so the beginning was a bit rough, but now he has gotten pretty good. He gives practice midterms and the exams are basically the same as the practice. He really tries to help his students.
He's good.
I too had to drop this guy in Fall 04, he just isnt a good teacher at all, he tries ill give him that but he complicates things way too much. there is a difference between knowing finance and teaching it. too many hw's and tests impossible
My God! Great intentions but terrible method. He tries to force feed material without adding flavor. He needs to refine his methods of teaching and by doing this he can bring out the best in his students. As for now - all I can say is, what a painful experience!!!
Even though I didn't get such a good grade, i admit it was my own fault. The exams are the same as the review exams, he is always available to help you. He is a very nice guy. He is not that clear, maybe because of his accent but if you need help, he will surely give it to you
It was his 1st semester teaching, so he was indeed green. But he got a lot better. He even came on Sundays to give us exam reviews! The exams are exactly like the practice exam sheets. So make sure you can do them and u'll be just fine. HW is hard though. Just study the practice questions. Cool guy.
A professor that excepts u to be a finance major & not to work a job. Gives u formulas, but no basic plug-in examples to practice...so u really don't know if u are on the right track. If u take him then except to work extremely hard and listen to a extremely boring lecture off of powerpoint slides.
he is not an easy A, he makes you work. but it is not bad. it is time consuming, but it's worth it. he is ALWAYS there to help you, very nice. if you work on the class, you'll get your grade. he curves generously. after this class you will know and understand more, trust me
This guy is really hard. I just took his exam and got a 38. On all my calculus exams I have gotten nothing less then an 80. I am an accouting major and he makes cost look like a breeze. He is really nice and tries, but that does not cut it. Take anyone eslse. I had to drop, I too have never dropped.
Very smart. If you do not understand ask he will always help you. Test more or less like the review--no surprises.
Cool guy, but definitely makes you work. Not that good of an explanation giver but as long as you do his hwks (he posts the solutions), read the book, and do his practice mid-terms you are bound to get at least a B+. You gotta work but it is worth it, you come out knowing things and he is very helpful, he is in his office a lot!
He is a very difficult man. Expects you to come in on the weekends because he never finishes a class lecture during class time. I think he made this class a lot harder than it should be-not that its easy. Not too helpful. If you stick with it and have time to go to class and stay in his office you just might make it. Advice-STAY AWAY.
I literally aced all his midterms and got 89 on the crazy killer final exam. Still he gave me B+. I just couldn't believe it. Even if u have close to 4.0 gpa like I do, avoid this guy. Taking his exams are one thing...studying for them was just grueling and I don't think they were worth it. I could've spent more time on other exams.
Professor Martinez is one of the smartest professors in Baruch College. I feel bad for him. All the students that wrote sht about him below are just not bright enough for investment analysis. I remember him explaining portfolio theory, but students in the class didn't even know how to use percentages. People good in math had just got it like that.
Let's face it, this guy is one of the smartest professors in Baruch. The problem is, most students are among the dumbest in Baruch. They suck at math and expect to get Investment Analysis very easily....
He can not explain the subject at all. I am sorry but i think his language skills are way too low to be a professor at any college. He gives a lot of HW and makes a lot of mistakes during class. His midterms are Ok, but final is a total killer ( it is way too long and very difficult even for those who are good in Math.)
Big No NO do not take him... he does not know how to speak english!!!! now u can imagine... avoid him at any cost ....
He is so immature; I believe he wrote the weird positive comment (calling Baruch students stupid) for himself. This incompetent instructor will laugh at your face with joy when you all are confused & upset. we all felt stuck & frustrated. I am glad I took Fin3610 with another prof so I learned all that Mr. Martinez couldn't teach us at Fin3710.
I don't who is more incompetent at his job, Martinez or Eytan. This guy isn't even Finance PHD. He is Physics PHD. Avoid this guy. Won't really understand the core concepts like u r supposed to do. Midterms can be aced w effort, but the final exam and overall course grade at the end will anger u to a point where u lose faith in FINANCE!
Please listen DO NOT TAKE HIM! He can NOT teach at all and he has nothing to do with finance field! He have tons of homeworks and the test are SO HARD, you have to show all the work, the totally points of the midterm is 130, the class average is 80. He is purely terrible.
I went in thinking i knew finance. this man has managed to make me hate finance in the span of only three months. his exams are out of 130 pts in which the students only avg about 80 pts. His hws take an entire weekend to do and you learn nothing from them. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE PLEASE AND AVOID DESTROYING UR GPA.
IF this professor wasn't so sexy I would hate more than how I do right now. But thats just all he is.. sexy. He just doesnt know how to explain himself! The midterms are not bad but why take the chance to mess up your GPA. You will regret taking this prof. I give you my word unless yur mathematically inclined.
He's EXCELLENT! If you really want to learn fin. he'll teach you the concepts that you need in the REAL world and not just how to plug-in number into formulas. He's ALWAYS in his office if you need help, go and he'll do the hw with you! Practice exams are EXACTLY like the real exams.(Notice how all the bad reviews below are written by illiterates)
yea so he give the practice exam, but he doesnt give you the solutions for it, how you going to do it? tones of homeworks, most of them are need to be done by excel. He knows his stuff but he CANT NOT TEACH! doesnt explain****! Do yourself a favor, DO not take him unless you can really study on your own! Need to show work on exam, no MC!
He's ok. Doesn't teach well in class but will help you outside of class. He's a really nice guy and he knows his stuff but not great at explaining concepts. Hes not the worst but certainly not the best
Wow. It's been an experience. For those of u who will take him ... prepare urself to work HARD. This prof. is not a joke. Knows plenty, but can't teach, so pretty much u have to study by urself. Do all the hws (they r helpful) and study those practice tests.... u'll be fine... P.S. He's really hot, too bad he has a wife and a kid :(
Be prepared to work your tail off because its hard. Being among the group of profs that hopped off the banana boat. He cant explain the material right. But will help u outside of class. 2 midterms and a cumulative final. He is so hot u cant stay mad at him when u feel like ur failing. I managed to get a B. Good luck!
He is a nice professor, and always helpful out side of the class. I didn't read the book at all, got B+ at the end. Final is hard, you should understand and do all of the practice problems. Try to understand the notes and slides. You will be fine. Good Luck!
One of the best and most intelligent professor I ever had. He is very knowledge and teaches you how the materials can be applied in the real world. Take him if your are serious about finance and want to learn, if your looking for an lazy A take someone else. What I learned in Prof. martinez class has made other finance classes a breeze.
I learned a lot from Martinez's Fin3710 class! He is a very knowlegeble professor, and try to teach you as much as he can. If your major is finance and want to learn about FIN, then take him!He will always help you if you don't understand. DO NOT take Johnson's class because you absolutely get NOTHING from him. I had a horrible experience from John
This is the worst professor I have had in my college career. He is very unclear and does not know how to explain things. He assumes that everyone knows everything. He makes things more complicated than they are on purpose. Do not take his FIN 3710 class.
I am writing this review before receiving my grade, so I am not sure how he is with the grading. What I know for sure is that I learnt a lot in his class. His class is not easy but it's worth the hard work.
He's one of the most unreasonable Professor at Baruch. He have reviews for midterms on Sunday nights but they are not helpful at all because he NEVER give you the solution to the practice midterms and always say " that he will not go over" any q's but only answer specific questions. Final is a killer.DO NOT TAKE HIM AND SAVE YOUR GPA!
What a cutie, but he is realllly hard. He made things so complicated. Gives a quiz almost every week, so be prepared. 3 exams . The final is cumulative and the tests are extremely hard. GOOD LUCK.
Very hard professor! But does give tons of notes to study from and equation sheet on exam...no memorization..just application....BIG CURVE ALSO.... he doesnt claim so but he definitely does....trust me big curve. i didnt get good grades on my exams cuz i didnt study and i got a decent grade... study and you will def get a good grade.
Although, Martinez is a knowledgable prof. he is not great at teaching. His explanations of material makes it harder to understand the concepts. Hard class. You must study a lot to do OK in this class. He often jokes around in class and once in two weeks surprises you with a 5 min quiz that based on Home Work. You should be good in math to take him.
tell him to stop swimming!!!!! its not helping anyone understand anyhting in class... but theres a reason why no one drops his class...... go to extra help- he is a great professor!!! and i loooove his exams!!!! WOOHOO for Martinez
although attendance is not mandatory, just keeping up wit the materials and taking those homework quizes are crutial. He can be confusing when he teaches but practice exams given a week before the exam reflect the actual one.
very hard material and doesnot explain well, he absolutely is a smart guy but not good at explaining it. the textbook was not to clear in their explainations either, cummulative final and does curve the tests at the end of the semeser
Very tough professor! Practice midterms are a great help. Says hell curve at the end and when you get your grade you find out that he DOES NOT CURVE!!! He tries to simplify things does a great job at first and once you get to calls and puts its terrible. Hes very knowledgeable. The final was hard! Be prepared to work!!!
THE WORST PROFESSOR AT BARUCH. KEEP AWAY FROM HIS METHOD OF TEACHING. HI IS UNCLEAR IN EXPLANATION AND TREATS STUDENTS AS ANIMALS.
Stay away!!! The worst professor, doesnt know how to teach at all.Never answers a question, even on the review. Not helpfull at all!!!!!! If u want to ruin your GPA take him , otherwise he is no use at all! And for those that say he is tough but good BS im taking a finance professor now that is much more knowledgeable and can actually teach.
Useless Piece of Sh*T! Take it from an A student, who got all A's on the first two exams, and have no idea how i did on the final, but gave me a C!!!!Reviews are completely useless because does not go over it in class, expects you to know it even though he hasnt taught it to you. If yo take this class, seriously, your screwed!
thw worst professor ever. why the hell is he teaching finance anyways, he doesn't know anything. clueless and needs to be fired.
This guy is not the greatest professor at Baruch College, but at least I can say I learned a lot in his class. If you want to come in class and play with your laptop, then it's not Martinez's fault you got an F in this class(they know who I am talking about). If you keep it serious you will do fine. Class is very hard, I have to agree. And he curves
He dont use book, quiz, mid & final based on questions(availble 1 week in advance if lucky)If u work, take more 3 class/semester,no math degree, cant understand him or arent expectin to study like you never did before, your warned! If your A studnt:,if u thought it couldn't get any harder, final takes extrahuman ability,be superprepared.
The guy is cynical and careless. He does not follow the textbook. Unclear about assignments and his language barrier confuses students even more. 85% of his Fall 2007 class received C, many F and some B. Try to avoid his class!
He teaches very clearly. Also he cares for the students. Besides, he is the hottest professor on campus.
Professor was a Quantitative Analyst at a really big hedge fund (Citadel). If you aren't good with numbers stay away. You walk out learning a lot more than all the other sections, at the premium of maybe 1/2 or 1 letter grade lower at the end. Exams are good- they make you think. Best advice? Do the practice exams + HW or fail.
Stay away. The most confusing professor in the history of Baruch. Exams are made by him and they are more difficult than book examples. 8 Homeworks, 6 Quizzes, 2 Midterms, 1 Final. His final is created for Grad students, not undergrad. Avoid him at all cost, even if it means taking 3710 in a different semester. Waste of time!
Horrible, The worst class I took in Baruch. Don't take him.
What are you all talking about? After I was done with his class, FIN 4710, FIN 4610, and FIN 4750 were a breeze for me. I got an A in all these three classes. You know why? Because of Martinez's class. He is the man. I am even thinking of doing my Master Degree in Financial engineering because of him. Thank you Prof. Martinez. Great MIT product :)
Midterms are not so hard in comparison to final, a lot of material. He does the final so hard on purpose, to make students thiiiiinnnkkkk!!! If you good with numbers and math, take him; otherwise, you will cry to the end of the semester?
Make sure you understand every practice midterm question's solution and Each homework solution. Powerpoint slides and in class notes are very helpful to solve those triky questions. He is Nice and funny. Also, if u want to get good grade, u needs partners!!
Where to start. He is the most confusing professor at Baruch. Him having a background in Mathematics and Physics should tell you something. The class is basically a formula-fest with no explanations, with random notations and no words. Nothing is in layman terms, and expects you to derive everything by heart. Smart person, but poor instructor.
Easy? NO,this class in nature is not easy. Even though the class is hard but you ended up learn something. Practice mid-term is a MUST, and MUST work with friends since he wouldn't tell you the answer or else the test would be harder since the real thing is similar to the practice. I recommend it to people who truly have interest in this course.
He is smart and his course is well organized. do the hws definitely, midterms and final practice. I did it all and got an A-. He is always willing 2 help if needed. Don't you people lie here! It's true he won't just give u a good grade 4 nothing but those who studied did well. And yes he also has a very pleasant and charming personality. I loved hi
The class is hard, do all HW< practice midterms, have somebody to compare answers with - Professor does not give them, exams are similar to practice ones. Be prepared to work hard if you want a good grade, but you will, Professor is ready to help during office hours. He has Nice personality, he is very funny. Do not be afraid to take his class
your professor sucks
He's hard, but it's investment analysis...grow up you're competing against people from a lot better colleges than Baruch...if you want to learn he's worth taking!
I did learn stuff from this class, but this guy needs to seriously put more attention into the course. He'll give you a whole bunch of practice problems, which is good, but then half of the solutions are wrong and/or sloppy. Even in class he's like this. Take a look at his face when hes solving a problem... he seems so bored.
Hard to follow and consistently makes mistakes. How are you supposed to learn when he doesn't even know what he is doing!! Not a bad guy but not a good professor.
Homework- not graded, useful. Midterm1- 20%, Midterm2-20% Final-60%, Curves(little bit). Lectures aren't clear enough, constantly makes mistakes in his own examples, has hard time answering questions. DOES NOT prepare for the lectures at all. He gives multiple choice questions on the midterms but work out problems on the final. He is smart but does
horrible professor. always bored, always has errors in his materials, bad english, hard to learn from. Mostly had to learn everything myself using the book. The book explains concepts WAY better than martinez, but the book still sucked. STAY AWAY FROM THIS GUY. he may be knowledgeable but CANNOT TEACH.
I dont get when people say that you can learn a lot from martinez. I didn't learn sh** and pulled an A. Like others said, hw + sample mt/finals = real mt/finals. So just get those done, other than that he cant teach for life. this guy doesn't care for anyone, and always has something wrong in his material. take someone else, 3710 is important.
Shouldn't be teaching, end of story. Wastes literally entire class-time working out algebra on the board for no reason (always an error, corrected by student), NEVER finishes a problem with actual numbers. Homework is not graded, posts solutions online but doesn't go over them. Cant answer student questions, just obfuscates. Take Hessel if u can!!
It's not an easy class. he rarely goes over numeric problems. he wants you to know how to derive a formula instead of just knowing it. he doesnt stick to the book so you cant study by just reading the book(it wont work!). i wouldn't recommend him if you're looking for an easy A. Although, IF you understand what he's saying, you will learn a lot!!
He is condescending and treates his graduate students like children. I think he enjoys making the subject material harder rather than clear. Do not take this professor. I have upheld my responsiblity as a student to study the material and come to class EVERY session but he does not uphold his responsibility and TEACH!
He is condescending and treates his graduate students like children. I think he enjoys making the subject material harder rather than clear. Do not take this professor. I have upheld my responsiblity as a student to study the material and come to class EVERY session but he does not uphold his responsibility and TEACH!
Avoid AVOID AVOID. If you want to feel helpless and stupid take him. You may study and go to his class but its near impossible to get A grades for his class. His midterm is out of 190. average was 105 which is a 55%. I am now in this class , Fall 2010 and cannot drop because I need to maintain full time 12 credits. GPA will be hurt definitely.
you may think that its ok to take him since you need to graduate asap and the other sections are full. Please rethink your actions. He is the most arrogant and nonchalant prof I've seen.He doesnt teach well as he is too smart to teach.(MIT Physics and Math grad)Expects everyone to be a math whiz.very unhelpful during office hours, leaves for coffee!!
investments issue is one of the fundamental basis in finance. if you want to learn and Understand what are you doing, AVOID
Avoid this professor at all costs.
AVOID, AVOID, AVOID! Martinez has to be the absolute worst Professor I've ever encountered. Cocky, condescending, not helpful, arrogant, - you get the point. You leave that class angry that you paid to have that man teach such an important class, yet, you learn NOTHING. Class average on the midterm was below 50 and he saw nothing wrong. wow.
Do not take.
He has good intentions since he wants his students to not end up as back-office employees. He wants us to be able to be in the front-office with the ivy grads. Unfortunately, his style of teaching doesn't mesh with the expectations of the class. He is far too theoretical and does not come prepared with working examples. Needs better preparation.
Avoid if you can. I agree that he is good-intentioned, but the class was a theoretical formula-fest from the very beginning, with few/ no practical applications for investing. Also he's too smart in the sense that he often loses the students by skipping steps in complex mathematical derivations of formulas. Not a bad guy but VERY unclear.
He is absolutely the worst ever. Very bad personality, very bad at teaching. He is lazy, coky and irresponsible. If you are a 3.5+ finance major, you can expect to get something like B- which totally ruin your GPA! He is the WORST EVER-- DO YOURSELF A FAVOR: Do NOT take this guy!
If you are a finance major and want to learn something about investments, AVOID Martinez. Although very knowledgeable, he CANNOT TEACH, CANNOT ANSWER QUESTIONS and ARROGANT. The book is hard to read and confusing. He didn't explain homework, made mistakes in formula sheet and HW answers, which he posted really late. NO FEEDBACK on the class project
This was the most difficult Prof.I have ever taken. It was torture. He will make you feel like a complete idiot & laugh at u at the same time.HOWEVER,I think Martinez ultimately means well.He feels we aren't challenged enough so he fills that void.He teaches the way he does purposely. He doesnt answer questions directly because he wants us to(cont'd)
He seems like a nice guy at first, but when it comes to teaching he is quite useless. Makes constant mistakes, very unclear, very often doesn't actually do any real examples. Sometimes takes off most of the points for 95% correct material, other times gives half the credit for a wrong answer. Just avoid him, take anyone else, or you'll regret it.
The belly aching on this board is a joke. If you have 1/2 a brain, and are not a total wuss, this class is ok. He's lacking on the feedback, and isnt terribly helpful, but he's not a sadist by any stretch. If you take him, just DO THE WORK! Also, make sure you get a good group, mine sucked and I spent days doing what others couldn't
Nice guy, but the class is a complete waste of time. For the first time I can say that I walked out of a class without learning anything. Do your best to study the textbook, lectures are useless. The biggest problem is that he never comes to class prepared.
This was a very disappointing class. Not hard in the sense that you will be challenged, more to do with the lack of instruction from the professor. The quality of his lectures do not prepare you for the difficulty of the exams and HW. Be prepared to teach yourself.
How can someone be this bad and still keep their job? It's incredible!
Nice guy but terrible professor. Avoid this class at all costs. Seriously, this is the most important class that Finance majors will take. Don't take him or you'll end up hating your major and count on your GPA going down.
I don?t agree with all the negative comments. I didn?t like him at first, too, but he certainly grows on you. It helps if you are familiar with the subject. Prof. takes the time to answer questions and goes over the material several times. Also, the HW helps prepare for the exams, and he gives detailed solutions later on. Lectures help a lot to gr
The sheer volume of negative comments tells it all. It's obvious that the only reason he is teaching is for the paycheck. Arrives to class completely unprepared. Errors in his HW, exams, and lectures. Avoid like the plague!
Love him.after some friendly conversations,he'll help u in study, career choice,or choosing classes.class wz easy for me,cuz of my math background, but i saw my classmates struggling in his class.lacks real-life examples,bt its finance,u can google ur topic n find real life scenarios. practice exams'll make u self-study.class z full of fun.
He is a nice guy. However, he gave you assignments (roughly 20 questions) and then you have a 5 minutes quiz on 2 of these questions. The problem being that you might not have understood these questions and you will get a 0! He didn't really listen to our complaints. Average on mid-term: 65%.
The worst prof you can ever have...doesnt know how to teach..comes to class totally unprepared...keeps on changing course structure as per his wish and grade weightage( even if it is 2 days before the finals)...his hw and notes have dozens of errors....AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!!
Got above average in midterm, good final (never got to see final) but gave C+. Changes weight-age and grading structure a day before final. Pathetic at teaching, never replies to emails no matter how important. Went to office hour, talked about a girl's *..* for most time. Leaving Baruch! lost job? gr8!! Got 3A, 1A-, 1C+ coz of him.
not a great prof at all
